His father was a officer who served on a starfleet ship, but his father was killed while on shore leave (most likely cause he decided to dress in red) and he was then raised by his mother living on Earth until he was old enough and enrolled in the academy.

He is used to fixing stuff around the house and ever since his father died he has always been the one to fix things, he also used to spend his nights trying to build machines in the basement.
