Dural stated. He had already seen her name grace the roster, could have put a stop to it, forced reporting before any shifts began. He saw no need. All her credentials were in order, he had pulled her file when he caught her name being added to the rotation. (Reply Keats) "Well, you took a non-standard route to get where you stand. I saw no reason to force you on the standard path. When you added yourself to the next rotation, I pulled your file. Combat Medic to OCS to Physician, a path not many take." Dural said amused. (Reply Keats) "I added the appropriate permissions before I put your file down." The Cardassian smiled. Partly no doubt from the stain on their honor of being captured, enough generations have gone by now that the possibility exists that they could be welcomed back to the Empire.” “ Carraya IV must be a fascinating place, Perhaps one day I'll be fortunate enough to visit if the locals wouldn't mind a Cardassian face among them.” Emar said with a warm smile. “It’s not just Klingons and Romulans, there are Humans, like my mother, at least one Andorian and a Caitian from my recollection. A good half of the original colonists were from Starfleet Colonial Command, so there’s a smattering of other species in there as well.” Keira explained. “As far as I know, if you behave, don’t cause trouble and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, their likely to welcome someone like you with open arms.” “ Getting my hands dirty is my life. I'm an engineer.” He laughed a bit. “ I did want to ask you a little bit more about the engineering specs of this, other engineers have told me to umm…” He paused. “...Read the specs, but I want to know about the soul of this ship. No two ships or warpcores are alike.” “The Hades has done everything we've asked of her so far,” Keira mused. “I have a feeling she’s capable of giving more. We haven't seen her full potential yet.” “ Having served aboard this ship for just around a month, I've met talented Engineers, the only I haven't, until now, was you, and to be completely transparent you are by all accounts one of if not the best mechanical engineers aboard.” Emar confessed to her. “Reading my file?” Culturally it would be a very Cardassian thing to do, or Romulan as well for that matter. “ No, Captain. I did not read your file. Do you happen to remember 1st yearCadet Safix, she was that very condescending Denobulan who you tutored in your 3rd year at the Academy?” Emar asked to help Captain Merek's memory. She did remember a Denobulan, and a number of people warning about her candor or lack thereof. “I do remember, what of her?” “ Well surprisingly you were the only one who seemed to be immune from her slander, Captain.” “Some sort of punchline?” Keira asked for clarification. Emar shook his head. “ Captain, I wouldn't jest with my commanding officer.” The Cardassian said with a smile. “ She ranted and raved about your ability to break down and explain Base-Mode Programming and Modulations for Shielding systems. She said it was like listening to a Talakarian Chelling sing its morning.” Emar mentioned a comparison that was made between Captain Merek and a Talakarian bird-like creature. “ Her words, not mine, Captain Merek.” “I'll take the compliment,” Keira said. “What of the other talented engineers? In your estimation or perceptions, what do you make of them?” “ Many have proven to be quite diligent with their attention to detail. Lieutenant Alouron, is very task oriented and seems to be able to put out fires very fast, able to think ahead.” He said with a grin and pointed his finger. “ Almost like she can see the solutions before seeing the process. Working from end to beginning.” He paused and thought. “ Other than that there is talk among the engineering staff of them wishing to have more of your time.” He said and held up a hand. “ But many of them understand that time is not a luxury that a Starfleet Captain has, but I would suggest, if I may, that you pay a visit from time to time, once an engineer, always an engineer.” Emar smiled. “I see…” Keira said in all seriousness. “I'll take that under advisement.” She paused for a moment and used the opportunity presented, “Self reflection: How do you rate yourself as an Engineer?” Emar looked down then back up at her. “ I enjoy keeping busy, idle hands build nothing but lazy habits. I do tend to over analyze, but I strive to balance accuracy and efficiency. I am not as gifted in theoretical Engineering concepts as I would like to be but I am enrolled in 3 separate courses to improve that shortcoming of mine, Captain.” He laughed a bit. “ Truthfully I prefer to be left alone to make repairs and modifications as they need to be made. I work better by myself versus working with a team….” He confessed ~Not a bullet point you'd want on your evaluation report, at least not worded like that.~ The Captain speculated. “ I know these are not the things that I should be telling my commanding officer, but I also know these are weaknesses of mine that I have actively worked to reduce for the past 8 years of my life.” Emar added with sincerity in his voice. “The first step to overcoming short falls is identifying them,” the Romulan woman advised. “Kind of stepping on my XO’s toes here, but you won't advance well in the ‘fleet unless you can function well as part of a team. You can't lead unless you can function as part of that team. Understand?” “ Yes, Captain.” Emar responded. “Your first line leader should be mentoring you as part of their own evaluation, coaching you to take that next step. You should be volunteering to put yourself in situations where you can work on it, away teams, work details….” “ If they review my record they would see that I work excellent as part of a team, able to accept input from others, able to guide and encourage others and I am also able to lead others. From all my marks it would appear that I am the model team player. The part that isn't displayed on my record is the conflict within. I don't allow my personal feelings to affect my duties, but they affect me. I was engaging in subspace sessions with a Counselor on this matter. I am scheduled to have my first session with Dr. Doshi this evening.” “ From my understanding of Federation laws and Starfleet regulations you don't have to inform me of the specifics of what you discuss. Specifics of what you discuss are to remain private, with very few exceptions.” Keira offered. “ Transparency is important in my family. It sorta has to be when being a family of Cardassians living among Bajorans.” He laughed a bit. “I'll say that it seems you have your problems well in hand.” Keira said with a smile. “All the resources are at your fingers, you just have to ask.” “ And I will, Captain.” He replied. “ Well it seems I have taken enough of your time, if there is nothing Captain, let me conclude by offering a trip to engineering. I'm sure the enlisted would be thrilled to meet the woman who helped set up the Mars Base Defense system as an Ensign, I certainly am.” “I just might do that.” Keira said standing to shake the Cardassian Engineer’s hand. “A jaunt in Engineering may be just what I needed.” Emar looked down at her hand. ~ A handshake ? She really is full of surprises.~ Emar thought to himself and shook her hand. “ Until then Captain.” He responded. The Cardsassian, Derok, was, as typical for Cardassians, a difficult read. Michael watched for intent, and he seemed to have none. Which made the SFI field agent in him wonder why he was playing this game. His initial bet was bold, but not too bold. Only time would tell what cards he held. The Bolian next to Derok looked sadly at his cards and threw them into the center of the table. “I’m out.” Hansen was next and he chuckled at the Bolian, “No guts, no glory, Effren. I’ll call.” He threw his coins into the pot. T’Belle was up. Without a word she put in her chips. Her silence spoke volumes to Michael. Her behavior pattern had proven that it often meant she was exhibiting the human emotion of hope for better cards on her draw. Michael placed his cards face down and picked up a stack of chips. “Your eighty… and twenty more.” Time to see who was serious. The next player played with his chips for a few seconds then shook his head, “I’m out.” Now to see who would call his raise. She’s got something, but his raise did give her pause. Then Emar, as unreadable as before, continues the call. The only motion from T’Belle was a raised eyebrow. But it was enough. He wondered how many calculations the Vulcan made before finding the odds of her hand to win. Clearly it was enough for her. Hansen didn’t even hesitate. He tossed his chips into the pot and sat back with the swagger of someone with a confidence that Michael wasn’t sure he owned. Emar then threw in more chips, “Why not raise it another 50. That’s 150 total. In honor of those who have folded under pressure.” Michael’s eyes narrowed at the comment. It was the first time he did not like what Emar had done. There was no call to ridicule those that had already dropped out, nor cast dispersions on those who don’t believe they have a winning hand. The words, of course, did not phase T’Belle at all. She simply tossed her hand in and said, Fold.” Hanson had sat back to the raise. Michael was sure he’d intended to fold, but when Emar made his statement he sat forward in his chair and a flash of anger crossed his eyes. He tossed in his chips and looked defiant. Michael sighed heavily, knowing the boy just made a huge error. He tapped his own cards deciding on his own way to go. He had choices to make, and he had to wonder which way he could go. If he went for the tens his odds of getting two were pretty low. Of course, drawing a jack for the straight weren’t much better. He tossed his own chips in and said, “Call.” After Quinna had her turn Michael tossed one card into the center of the table saying, “I’ll take one.” The card came over to him. He let the card lay there, without looking at it. There was no point at this time. And with Emar holding a pat hand he wanted to give him a show that he really didn’t need it. The question was what was Quinna going to do? (reply Solice) (posted by Al Muir) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... She was one card away from a full house. The bid was strong, and Michael's raise made her start doing the math. Quinna looked around. A bold move. Before getting a new card. She was one card away from a full house. A low-ranking full house. She scrutinized the others. She was rather surprised when Michael did not raise the bet again. He called the bet. When the time came, Quinna called as well. Then she started swapping cards. It was rare when someone did not swap cards. She could not help but wonder what he was holding. She gave everyone what they asked for. Got her card swapped for a 2. Full house, but the lowest you could get. “Ok,” Quinna said, “Place your bet.” (Reply All) (Poted by Kris B) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A part of him wanted to raise again. He then began as he thought for a brief few seconds a memory coursed through his mind of the first time he was shown how to play any type of Terran card game. He had lived on Earth to attend High-school. It had been one of teachers , Mr. Mercer who had shown him and several other students how to play poker. Emar never cared much for the win, he cared for the experience of the game and for the past hour he had enjoyed himself. He laid his cards down. " Im out." Watching the Cardassian, Michael was sure that he held a pretty decent hand. And knowing that Michael hadn’t even looked at his last card didn’t even seem to phase him. It was as if his entire intention was to lose this hand after betting heavily. He understood the strategy at the beginning of the game as he was learning about the players, but at this point it was some kind of a manipulation that he didn’t understand. Unless, of course, Derok was the best bluffer that Michael had ever met. It was possible, but highly unlikely. T’Belle raised an eyebrow, and Michael detected a slight smile that almost formed in the corner of the Vulcan’s mouth. She threw some chips into the pot. “I raise 100,” she said confidently. Hanson did not hide his smug smile, but wiped it off his face before he bet. “Your hundred,” he played with his chips and then threw more in, “and a hundred more.” Michael didn’t take his eyes off Derok, the Cardassian was bothering him now, and without hesitation pushed his chips into the center of the table. “I’m all in.” The bet came to Quinna, (reply Quinna) It came back round to T’Belle, who looked at her cards, and then at Michael, “Do not wish to look at your final card, Mr. Weston?” Michael shook his head and smiled at her seductively, “I’m good.” T’Belle blinked, more stunned at his statement and cavalier attitude than by Derok’s folding. She shook her head and tossed her cards in. “Logic dictates that I fold at this time.” Hanson, now, looked very perplexed. Michael could only imagine what was going through the man’s head. Probably, for the first time in a long time, he was feeling doubt at what he was doing. He played with his cards. Then he picked up some chips and rifled through them as he thought. The man clearly had a decent hand, but now he was wondering if it would hold up himself, or Quinna. Finally his face broke with his confidence and he tossed his cards onto the table. “Damn it, I fold,” he said, defeated. Now it was just him and Quinna. Did she want to see how this would end? (reply Quinna) Michael placed the cards he had on the table, one at a time. Eight. Nine. Ten. Queen. Slowly he reached out and took his last card. The bet came around. Best were raised, over and over. Michael may have been watching others, but she was watching him. When it came to her turn, it was a no-brainer. She was in, and she tossed her chips into the pot. "I call." “Do not wish to look at your final card, Mr. Weston?” “I’m good,” Michael said, and Quinna knew that tactic. And it seemed to work on everyone. Everyone but her. "I called, Weston," Quinna took a deep breath, "Let's see them." She winked at Michael. He was certain that she had a stronger hand. Why would she do that? Did she think that it would damage his ego if she beat him? He thought that he knew her better than that. He also thought she knew him better than that, and a win that way would in no way satisfy him. As she excused herself from the table, Hansen pushed his chair back and stood in anger. “A queen?!! I folded to a queen?! Are you kidding me?” “Easy, Hansen,” Michael heard someone saying, “nobody forced you to fold.” “But a damned queen,” Hansen went on, “not even a pair.” Another crewman came over and put an arm around Hansen, “Face buddy, you were outplayed.” Hansen stared at Michael, then let the others drag him away from the table. A couple of other crew members came over and patted Michael on the back. “It’s about time someone brought him down a peg.” Michael nodded at them but didn’t respond. He followed Quinna out of the Rec Room and began to jog down the hall to catch up to her. When he did, he reached out to touch her arm. “A headache?” he asked. “Yeah, it just kinda hit all of a sudden,” Quinna said as she lifted Michael's hand and kissed it. “You want to explain to me what just happened back there?” he pressed. “Why did you fold? I know you had a better hand.” “You know that? Prove it.” But Quinna pulled Michael to the bulkhead. She leaned into the man, her eyes watching his as she closed the distance and kissed him deeply. Quinna then pulled back slightly. “I am sorry if I embarrassed you, but there was something in the way you looked…. I couldn't keep my eyes off of you. You are incredibly…” Michael smiled, “I’m not embarrassed, love, bewildered, and unsatisfied, most definitely not embarrassed. I just hoped you’d know that I was okay with you winning. I got what I wanted from the game.” Then he leaned in and kissed Quinna back, “Besides, you may have noticed the people watching you leave. You looked pretty good, too.” He returned the passion of her kiss the second time. Not caring if others were watching, Quinna ran her fingers through Michael’s hair. “I already won and hit the jackpot.” Michael smiled, “Jackpot? I don’t think I’ve ever been called that before. People have used other euphemisms with Jack involved.” “Actually, my head is aching. I am going to go lie down.” Quinna said, leaning into Michael’s warmth. “Perhaps I can help with your headache?” Michael asked hopefully. Quinna leaned into him, “Maybe you can.” Michael’s eyebrows went up as Quinna grabbed his hand and dragged him down the corridor. The admission made a lot of things make sense to her. Raven’s odd speech patterns and phrases, and how she interacted with others. It was clear she did not have a great deal of experience interacting with others. Something they had in common. Before Wednesday could say anything Raven changed the subject. “I don’t recall anything about Wiccans while in the great link. What do you know about changelings?” Wednesday’s head began to spin with Raven’s constant changing of subject, making it difficult to know what to say. She decided to treat it as an engineering problem. First things first. “There is little known, off world, about the Wiccan colony. My people went through generations of persecution for their beliefs. Even in the most initial phases of the federation misconceptions and prejudices ran rampant in the general populace, so it was decided to find a world we could call our own and worship the Great Mother and the horned one, Cernunnos, with fear.” Wednesday pulled her knees to her chest and hugged them for comfort, “And before anyone says that there’s no such thing as prejudice in today’s society, I assure you that even in today’s world there are those who considered me to be some kind of witch. What my people can do may seem like magic to the uneducated, but I always assumed that the people of the Federation, and especially the fleet, would know better. But they don’t.” Putting her legs down she leaned forward and looked at Raven as if for the first time. “I imagine you know that feeling. I don’t know much about changelings, except what we learned in the academy. You know, the basics, and the history of the Dominion War. I can only imagine what it would be like for you. I mean, considering the picture painted of your people in our history classes. To be honest, I didn’t realize there were any changelings in the fleet. You must see your fair share of prejudice.” (reply Green) (Posted by Al Muir) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... "I have been treated badly with people abusing my abilities therefore breaking my trust in them.  There was an incident where two officers asked me to morph into a locker room bench.  The male and female officers then used me to have sex on me.  That is why I have trust issues.  It took several generation cycles  to feel clean after that.  I ask you to be an advocate for me." Wednesday thought it odd that Raven saught her out and now has nothing to talk about. She, herself, had a myriad of ideas she could discuss, from discussing the nature of the universe, to talking about her beliefs. But she wasn’t sure what the changeling could add to those topics. So she turned to the topic Raven could speak of. “Tell me about yourself, Raven,” Wednesday said. “I’d like to understand you more. Like, I understand that you could chose any form. Why did you chose this one? Why female? Why human? Why the petite, pretty thing you appear as now rather some big, burly male? Do your people even have gender?” (reply Green) (posted by Al Muir) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... She had been a little forward and her lack of experience translated into impatience. Raven was pretty, and Wednesday had enjoyed the fact that someone, anyone, was giving her personal attention. It had made her feel something that she wasn’t sure was actually there. She’d never been in love before, with another girl or a boy. There had been people that she was attracted to, of course, but she was only 19, so her experiences had been limited. And in the academy everyone was always so much older than she was, so they had no interest in her. Wednesday didn’t feel rebuffed, since Raven said that she didn’t have any sexual preference at this time, and she’d figure it out, which was gentler than she could have been. “What are your feelings on the matter?” Raven asked. Wednesday sat back and pulled her knees up to her chest. Her mind went back to Wicca. The community was not necessarily a matriarchal society, but they are a feminine affirming system of government. They balanced the roles of males and females. However, in her experience, they were a female rich society. So she had seen a fair share of lesbian relationships as well as heterosexual ones. “To be honest,” she said softly, “I don’t know. I mean, I have two mothers, but I’ve also seen my fair share of men and women together. Kinda like you, I figured that I’d work it out when the time came. I’d just need experience in both, I guess. I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable. It’s just… well … I do like you. Do I thought, maybe, you’d be a good place, or person, to start with. I’m sorry.” (reply Green) (posted by Al Muir) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... "There is a specific intent to be male or female outside of the great link.  The chosen appearance is up to the individual.   My personal reason to be a pretty , petite her head was mainly because it would be fun to portray that and explore everything it could be.  I have little experience with voice mimicking.  I tried that the first time on Starbase Freedom when President Zon was on the promenade.  It went ok but should be much better if I try that again.  I would like to practice that with you.  Will you help me with that?" She answered her questions without really answering her questions. Except for the fact that the changeling thought it would be “fun” to portray a pretty, little redhead, which made her wonder what kind of fun she was expecting. Wednesday wondered how much greater an opportunity it would have been to be someone much plainer, and less physically appealing. Her reasoning seemed… shallow and self serving, and the Wiccan wondered how far the changeling had truly changed from the mindset of her people in the area of manipulation. Without a breath she went on to talking about voice mini Kerry and asked for Wednesday’s help. Wednesday shrugged and said, “I’m not sure how I could help you, Raven. I have no experience in mimicking , and that seems more of a physiological thing. Would someone in command or medical be better suited for that? Maybe you should ask Commander Solice. With not much to report, as they were still in transport, the interaction was short. She could tell something was weighing on him. Couldn't tell if it was the shift or something else. He'd bring it to her if she needed to. She made a mental note to herself to check on him at the beginning of his next shift. She tapped the bulkhead and a coffee station deployed out of the wall. The drip coffee maker Kellis had gotten her, various bags of coffee, Bolian, Columbian, Turkish and even some of the Raktajino that Kora had provided. She had made half of her fresh supply available to the crew via the Bean me up kiosk. In a moment of creativity Kellis had placed it on the menu under Captain's Reserve. "Computer one carafe of Carrayan spring water, one liter, room temperature." she commanded. With a twinkling light and a soft hum, the ordered article appeared on the pad. Keira placed the glass on the heating element and activated it. Selecting the Raktajino off to the side, she opened a filter paper and settled it into the conical receptor for the water. Followed by three scoops of the grounds. She tapped the side three times, settling the coffee granules. While she waited for the water to boil she opened a channel. "Captain Merek to Commander Solice." (Reply Quinna) "Catch you at a bad time, Commander?" Keira asked. Her smile leached into her words. She slipped out of bed , put on a shirt and padded her way to the replicator. Quinna, like functioning with a cup of caffeine in her. Taking her first sip, Quinna closed her eyes and took in the moment. She then gifted her PADD on the table and began to read the messages of the morning. Nothing too important. The weather on Mars was the same, the fishing on Venus welcomed the first Vulcan winner. Quinna shook her head and decided that the news was too much fluff. Quinna’s next activity was a shower. Her commbadge beeped before she get in. She raced to her side of the bed to get it before Michael woke. "Captain Merek to Commander Solice." “Solice here Captain,” Quinna replied "Catch you at a bad time, Commander?" Keira asked. Her smile leached into her words. “Actually, no. Quinna gave a kiss to the sleeping form in her bed and rushed out to the suite. She combed her hair with her fingers and then she clipped it back. She had that ‘too many things to accomplish besides brushing her hair’ look today. Now she stood outside the ready room and rang the chime. She was one to be presumptuous enough to just walk in. Real Raktijino from Qo'noS..” Keira said pouring a cup. Quinna smiled, “I retract my previous statement, Goodmorning, Goddess.” Quinna accepted the coffee and started with an inhale. Then not a a sip but a full drink crossed her lips. She waited for the captains lead. Keira poured a second cup for herself and explained how she came across the treasured substance. “You remember Ravok, from the Academy, Mars and our run in the Mystique to Trill Prime before Starbase Freedom was built? I still have ties to his adoptive Klingon mother. Treats me like a daughter…” Keira said, stirring sweetener and cream into her own cup. “Sends me a half palate quarterly, just lovely for long missions and late nights.” “You just have to love the mommas” Quinna became reflective, “That time seemed like ages ago. No matter how much things change, somethings always stay the same.” Quinna lifted her coffee cup like it was more of a coffee toast. Keira raised her own cup slightly and nodded, “Where would we be without them?” Quinna took another drink of her coffee, and let out an pleasurable , “hmmmm” “Though, I would love to reminisce, it's not why I invited you.” Keira said sitting down at her desk. “Ok,” Quinna started and set down her coffee, “So why did you invite me?” “I am curious what it is we're going to the Kuiper Belt to accomplish.” Keira tried broaching the subject delicately. “You helped me in a time of need, and I don't want to seem ungrateful, and if it's classified…” Quinna made a bobble in her mouth and slowly released the air. “Well….” Keira had run the files of Quinna’s team, more than one of the files were classified barring common observation. She didn't want to barge in like a targ in a French restaurant. “Its not an order,I’m not telling you as a Captain, I'm asking as an old friend. If you'll forgive the saying: My ship works best if the charts have a compass and charts to steer by.” Quinna took a deep breath. “About 25 years ago, A starship went into the Bajorian Wormhole and never returned. Well not until a few days ago. Our mission is to retrieve the ship.” but Quinna held back the personal ties as she did with the rest of her team, excet for Michael who knew it all. “A rescue mission?” Keira said, “we're pretty good at those. We just did one of those a few months ago, one of the Hades’ first missions.” Keira said spinning the desk terminal so that she could access it. “What's her registry number? We'll bring up the schematics.” “You will not find it in any of the data bases.” Quinna stated as an after thought. “Trust me, I tried. Not even a commissioning date for the ship and all records of the crew was wiped.” Quinna picked her cup back up and took a drink. She spun it around in her hand. “I few days ago, it emerged from the wormhole, sent a set of 25 yeal old codes to DS9, and then jetted off.” “Do you know anything about the ship? What class? Type of vessel?” Keira asked. “Well, I there is no official registry anymore…” Quinna choked a bit. “I just cannot say anymore. “I meant it when I loaned her to you. Still do. The Charron is yours for the duration of your mission.” Keira could tell she was holding back. Classification of need to know, she thought, was the most likely scenario. She didn't want to pry and put pressure on Quinna of having to choose further between Keira's request and any boon this mission would do for her career. “I appreciate it.” Quinna took a deep Breath, “This Mission is also personal.” she choked out. “We will be in the area, the Bajor Sector, if you need the back up. I'm going to approve the Marines conducting a training exercise in the actual Kuiper Belt. So they'll be potentially closer.” Keira explained, taking a tentative sip of her own drink. “I appreciate that. The ship that we are going to it home. My home. First 7 years of my life.” Quinna did not know where that come from. The felt safe to talk. Keira thought about that revelation. Revisiting your childhood in a detached way, it had only been roughly six years since she left home for the first time. “I can imagine.” Keira said, “My childhood was planet side. When I was seven, I hadn't been on a ship yet. We were agrarian. ” Quinna smiled, and took another sip of her coffee, “What happened back then, made us who we are today.” A pause, a sip, a small sob that was quickly stopped, “and Today, We have coffee.” “So presumably going after this ship, that you lived on during your formative years,” Keira said pausing for another drink, “ if you need a tow, the Cheron is not large enough to pull anything bigger than the old Constitution class starships, small escorts or science vessels by today’s standards, give us a call.” “I am hoping it will not come to that. I appreciate your offer.” now quinna needed to get her command on but she was not use to it. She still felt weird commanding others. “We’ll be conducting routine engine tests of our coaxial drive.” Keira explained, “Chief Alouron tells me it’ll be nothing that’ll keep us out of the next war. The Marines just put in a request for a live fire training exercise in the Kuiper belt; they'll be occupied, but available. If the need arises you can request them for assistance. The Jump ship they’ll be using is warp capable, so they’ll be closer and able to arrive quicker than us. Not who’d you want necessarily in a ship fight with their limited ship to ship capabilities, but if you want to storm a fortified position or repel boarders, they’re your guys.” Quinna nodded and made mental notes. “Major Masters is a professional, though he doesn’t come off that way. He’s a Major the equivalent of a Lieutenant Commander, you’re a full Commander, your higher rank coupled with command of your mission, he’ll follow your lead unless you’re incapacitated or mucking it up bordering on negligence. Since we both know the latter won’t happen.. “You never know, it could happen. I will keep those notes in mind and let the team know. Honestly, I have no idea what we are waling into. I find it weird that they would send a code and zoom away from DS9. I am hoping we can fill in the gaps to her absence.” Quinn stated as she finished the cup of coffee in her hands. “Should be interesting story upon our return.” [ Incoming transmission, USS Princeton.] “If you'll excuse me.” Keira said, “I'll have to take this. You need anything from me?” “We are good for now.” Quinna quickly stood. “I'll be available, call me if you do need anything.” Keira said then smiled mischievously. “I’ll make sure you get a kilogram of the coffee.” Quinna smiled, she appreciate it. “We will share another cup soon.” Quinna exited and headed back to her quarters. It always was. Systems didn’t wait for people to feel ready, and neither did the day. He moved through the primary passageway with an easy familiarity, the air cool and dry, boots echoing softly against the salvaged deck plating that had been repurposed more times than anyone remembered. The walls bore the marks of years of adjustment, patched and reseamed as needed, each change made because someone decided it had to be. Nathan paused at a status board near the environmental controls, scanning the readouts more out of habit than concern. Power levels were stable. Pressure held. Whatever passed for “outside” remained exactly that. He keyed a short note into his PADD, its casing scuffed from years of use. Then he continued on, nodding once to an older crew member hunched over a workstation, then to two of the younger ones moving a crate that was clearly heavier than they wanted to admit. “Take it slow,” Nathan said as he passed. They did. Near the storage annex, a pair of ship-born kids waited, pretending to work while watching him instead. They fell in beside him without being asked. “They said the recycler’s running hot again,” one offered. Nathan didn’t stop walking. “It’s been doing that since last cycle,” he replied. “As long as the pressure stays green, it’s noise, not trouble.” He slowed just enough to glance at them. “If it spikes again, flag it. Don’t open anything.” They nodded, reassured, and peeled off toward their assigned section. Nathan reached the end of the passageway and rested a hand briefly against the makeshift bulkhead, feeling the faint vibration of the compound’s systems humming beneath his palm. It felt the same as it had yesterday. That mattered. Still, something lingered at the edge of his awareness. A sense of expectation he couldn’t place, the way routines sometimes tightened before something changed. He straightened, checked the time, and turned back toward the habitation section. Whatever the day brought, it would announce itself soon enough. (reply any)(posted by Calvin) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... When she accepted the position of FO for the Auberjonois she was certain that those dreams were destined to come true. After all, a science vessel in Starfleet, what could be more exploratory. Little did she know that when they entered the Bajoran wormhole that she would find herself in a completely different adventure, on for survival. The wormhole had abandoned them. The crew had begun to call in the pit of despair. After their first pass through the wormhole, to the Gamma Quadrant, their return path spat them back out, still in the Gamma Quadrant. After the third attempt the wormhole just ceased to open. They’d been trapped. After that it had been like a surreal nightmare. The ship went on automatic, brought them to this planet and unceremoniously transported everyone to the surface. There had been no time to react. By the time Casem had seen the first to disappear in a transporter effect, she too had been swept away. The entire crew had been displaced, oddly, with just the right amount of technology to ensure the survival of the group… at least from starvation and the elements. Fortunately it was a crew of mostly scientists and engineers, so improvising to create their compound was not out of their depth. However the compound was in way perfect, and was constant need for tending and repairing. At least it always provided then something to do… and something to teach the children. One of the bright sparks of the whole adventure was Nathan. He had a talent for “fixing” things. It shouldn’t have been a surprise as his parents were crucial to the creation of their habitat. But his instincts were nothing short of amazing. Casem saw the boy across the chamber and at the end of a passageway, resting his hands on the wall and looking contemplative. She made her way over to him. “Nathan,” the Trill said with a smile, “everything okay? You look quite contemplative.” (reply Nathan) (posted by Al Muir) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... People are steady,” he added after a moment. “But the rhythm’s off. Folks are moving like they expect to be told something, even though no one’s said anything yet.” He paused, choosing his words. “I’ve walked this circuit enough times to know when it feels different. Probably nothing,” he said with a faint, apologetic half-smile. “Just feels like the day’s waiting on us instead of the other way around.” (reply Casem, any)(posted by Calvin) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Rachel Solice (Quinna’s Mother) -- 0945) Rachel put out a breakfast spread. Juice from the fruit they called sweet heat. It has a grape and lemon flavor sweet but the meat of the fruit was warm and juicy. It quickly became a nice substitute for coffee as it has the same amount of caffeine as coffee. There was a loaf of bread and a nut butter that she made. Since she was essentially useless as a holodeck programmer, she took to baking and other food supplies. She became quite the cookbook writer and homemaker. She had 4 more children already pregnant when this occurred. She and Michael agreed to mourn Quinna and Preston as if they had died in a tragic accident and have decided to not tell the current children. Rachel gave Mike a kiss on his lips. Very much in love today as she was when she married him 35 years ago. “Happy Anniversary.” She quietly said to him. (Reply Mike Solice) Rachel’s 58 year old body started showing the signs of half a lifetime of hard work. Arthritis, thought would have been taken care of on a starship, was set in her body now. Medical Technology was something that was used in a last resort situation. Rachel’s Arthritis was not at the stage where medical intervention was a concern. She massaged her hands. “There is a storm coming.” she said as she stretched her fingers and did all those hand issues that would help rid of her discomfort. Mike Solice From: almuir62 at gmail.com (Al Muir) Date: Sun, 25 Jan 2026 14:30:45 -0800 Mission: Homecoming Day: 3 Stardate: 2446.10.18 (Planetfall Compound - Medical Habitat - CMO - Lt. Mike Solice (Quinna’s Father) - 0947) Mike had woken up… in a mood. He’d had that dream again. His little girl was calling out to him from deep in a mist, and try as he could, he could not get to her. The voice of his Quinna cried out for his help. His eyes had shot open but he’d trained himself not to move. He couldn’t bring himself to talk to Rachel, and put her through that again. They had agreed, years ago, to live as though Quinna and Preston were both dead. It took years for his brain to accept that they were, at least, dead to them. Eventually he had stopped dreaming about them. It had been at least ten years since he’d had any dream of seeing them again. He had let Rachel get out of bed to make breakfast as he lay, trying to quiet his mind. But every time he closed his eyes he could see those ever watchful eyes of Quinna staring at him, and hear the one hundred one questions coming from Preston’s mouth. Finally Mike dressed and joined his wife before Bryce came in looking to be feed. He moved behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist as she prepared the food. She turned and kissed him on the lips. “Happy Anniversary,” she said, her eyes filled with her love for him. He smiled at her and returned the kiss. “Happy Anniversary yourself.” His hands moved from around her waist and up her sides slightly with the familiarity of experience. They’d often been told how they were the oldest newlyweds anyone had ever seen. The noise of their rousing ten year old behind them caused them to separate. He gave her one more lingering kiss as a promise of more to come later. They separated and Mike watched as Rachel fussed with her hands. Mike’s eyes narrowed and the memory of his dream faded. Before he could say anything she looked at Mike and said, “There is a storm coming.” Suddenly, the whirling dervish of their ten year old son, Bryce ran into the room and squeezed in between them. “Morning mom, morning pop,” he said, “Happy anniversary.” Mike hugged the boy into his mother making a “Bryce sandwich.” “Morning squirt,” Mike said. “Thanks”. The group all separated and sat down to eat. Mike picked at his food, the nagging feeling returning and finally he stood up. “Guess I better get to the clinic,” he announced. “If I’m too late Martin will convince Andre that he should be allowed full medical access at sixteen. The kid’s good, but not that good. “ He rubbed the top of Bryson’s head, “Be good at school.” Bryson replied by stuffing more food in his mouth. Then he took hold of his wife’s hand and brought it to his lips. He leaned in and kissed her lips and then cheeck. When he was close to Rachel’s ear he whispered, “I want to see you in the clinic for your hands.” As he moved back he could see the look in her eyes and added, “I want your hands in full working order for tonight.” Then he turned and left to enter the clinic. Ben had no desire to have a new wife or more children. Mission: Homecoming Day: 3 Stardate: 2446.10.18 (Planetfall Compound - Medical Habitat - aCMO - Lt. Ander Benjamin- 1000) Ben had been in the clinic for an hour now. He mostly has been going over the appointments for today but today was a slow day. Ben looked up to see his friend walk in the door. “Mike, Correct me if I am wrong but didn’t you tell me yesterday that you were going to spend your anniversary with your wife, locked in your room.” (Reply Mike Solice) “So the hell are you here. There are no appointments today. Just me and the book I am working on. You know that cheesy romance novel I am writing, “Prophets of Love”.” Ben looked at his friend. “Your pagh sees troubled and I do not have to grab you ear to see that.” Ben stood from his seat and looked at Mike. (Reply Mike Solice) “Have you told Rachel you have been having more and more dreams about your girl? She would be abut what 31, 32?” Ben asked (Reply Mike Solice) “I know she is the one that made the death rule, but you have to tell her. You need to talk to someone just as connected as you are.” Ben suggested. (Reply Mike Solice) (posted by Kris B) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Her demeanor reminded Keira of her father when he was at work. Duty driven, exacting in detail. "Welcome aboard the Hades, I'm Captain Keira Merek." As the blonde woman spoke she extended a hand in the Human greeting. "Æfvadh" {Romulan: Be Welcome: Formal} If it was trepidation or ignorance of Human customs it took more than a couple beats for the Romulan to return the greeting. “ Viduus au paeti shaoi ben” { Romulan: Pleased to meet you, superior} Delexa said in a straightforward Romulan dialect in response to Captain Merek's use of the Romulan language. She had noticed that The captain's dialect seemed a bit off world, but still it was Romulan. " Urri sa'rhhæ" {Romulan:Come with me.} Keira said, it had been a while since she had spoken formally. “ I would be happy to join you, Captain Merek.” Centurion Delexa said as they walked out of the transporter room and into the corridors of the ship. As the pair left the transporter room, "Centurian, the file they sent was rather.. sparse. What department do you work in, for the Republic?"
