"How many of those are *combat* drops?" Now, Masters was trying to break through the shell. How will he take the question? More precisely the inference of the question, how and when it was asked. In this instance it tells more than the question itself. Sean saw the Ferengi's eyes move, but no betray of anger or anything else. ~Good discipline.~ “ I was deployed in a very active region of space that was a hot bed for organized crime that threatened the stability of the Beta Quadrant….” Stom paused. “ I believe I'm more experienced with looking at casualty lists Sir. We lost 157 marines in 18 months...." Sean shook his head at the loss of life. Since the Federation had withdrawn from the galactic scene at large, it made everything worse. Two years ago the 'Fleet had been pouring cadets into the breach, clawing to gain back former ground. "With your skillset," Sean paused. "We've never had a specific element designated for it." (Reply Stom) "We're going to change that." Sean said. "I'm assigning to you Third Squad." (Reply Stom) "You're going to lead it. Train them, mold them." Sean finished. Masters said. "I'm assigning to you Third Squad." Instantly Stom was surprised, and completely caught off guard. “ Third Squad needs a sniper, Sir ?” Stom asked. "You're going to lead it. Train them, mold them." The Major finished. Stom was even more surprised than he was previously. He had never led anything in his career, not even a training exercise during basic training. Stom was always overlooked for such opportunities. “ Yes, Sir.” Stom said as he masked his smile. "I'm going to put in for a training exercise. Live fire. Every swinging phaser. Mission: Homecoming Day: 2 Stardate: 2446.10.17 (USS Hades - Sickbay - Lt(jg) Rosalynd Keats MD - 0930) Rosalynd had woken early from a quick catnap, despite the overnight shift. Years of waking up to reveille at 0600 had bred into her a biological alarm clock that she’d been unable to shake in the 18 months since she’d left the Corps. The overnight had been, thankfully quiet, one or two routine scans from those who would have been on C Shift, but otherwise her time had been spent familiarising herself with Sickbay. The ship itself was astounding, beautiful in its sleek shape, the unusual two pairs of nacelles giving it the look of a cheetah about to pounce. The tech that was installed throughout the ship was incredible too, everything was literally state of the art, some of which they didn’t have much of even at the Academy. The Medical technology that seemed to be fairly routine and ubiquitous throughout sickbay, was only just being installed in parts of Medical HQ. Exiting the turbolift, she took a sip of her coffee, and allowed the last eighteen months to pass through her mind. From acceptance into the Officer Candidate Programme, to graduating after her Kobayashi Maru, the time had literally flown by. As she considered it, the last few days had been a literal whirlwind of one life changing event after another, all distilled into the matter of days. She’d finally arrived yesterday, and after reporting to Captain Merek, and settling into the quarters that she’d been assigned, the differences in ship time and her body clock, coupled with the excitement of her new prospects, she’d not been able to sleep, so she’d slipped on her habitual scrubs and picked up a shift in sickbay. Turning into SIckbay itself, she disposed of the now empty coffee container in a recycler and on spying the Cardassian officer that she recognised as the Chief Medical Officer. “Doctor Methor.” She caught his eye as she approached him. “Lieutentant Keats reporting Sir.” She found herself nearly pull up to a marine attention, a habit that she'd taken a long time to break, she did however, stand a little more formally than she normally would. Dural stated. He had already seen her name grace the roster, could have put a stop to it, forced reporting before any shifts began. He saw no need. All her credentials were in order, he had pulled her file when he caught her name being added to the rotation. (Reply Keats) "Well, you took a non-standard route to get where you stand. I saw no reason to force you on the standard path. When you added yourself to the next rotation, I pulled your file. Combat Medic to OCS to Physician, a path not many take." Dural said amused. (Reply Keats) "I added the appropriate permissions before I put your file down." The Cardassian smiled. The Cardassian spoke, It was obvious that he’d been aware of the work that she’d put in on the shift that she probably shouldn’t have done. Her permission to practice was cleared, though her posting to the Hades Med team technically hadn’t. “My apologies Lieutenant. I should have waited until our conversation as I reported in.” She said, a hint of the marine in the formal tones that she replied in, shifting her approach to a more personable one she continued. “However Sir, I found myself unable to sleep, and there was a gap in the roster that I saw, and figured there was no real danger on an overnight clinic.” "Well, you took a non-standard route to get where you stand. I saw no reason to force you on the standard path. When you added yourself to the next rotation, I pulled your file. Combat Medic to OCS to Physician, a path not many take." Dural said amused. Keats nodded. “Not many get the chance Sir. Combat Meds are always an odd bunch, we’re…” she paused, “...they’re…” she corrected. “...just as die-hard committed to the Corps as the most highly trained SpecOps, it’s hard to let go, I was lucky, I had someone in my life who loves me enough to tell me what I don’t want to hear.” She half shrugged. “Genuine apologies, I didn’t mean to overstep. I’m happy to carry on the graveyard shifts when my permissions are all updated.” It was more than she intended to say, but somewhat rarely she’d felt the need to really justify her actions. "I added the appropriate permissions before I put your file down." The Cardassian smiled. “My thanks Sir.” She answered simply, but carried on talking once more. “It’s hard for us to let go of the Corps Lieutenant.” (Reply Methor) “The reason that not many of us come through to the Fleet I mean. You don’t put the uniform on because it’s what you’re told to wear. Dural remembered fondly. "..but you weren't referring to that. What's your meaning?" “The reason that not many of us come through to the Fleet I mean. " You can be that thing, and be this thing too." Rosalynd nodded, her therapists had said similar things, but most of them had spent their entire careers sitting behind a desk, with little to no understanding of what ‘serving’ actually entailed. She remained silent for a moment, listening to Dr Methor as he spoke. "Wear the blue, but don't forget the green." Dural nodded. "For you however, it's getting late. I'd suggest that you turn in. You'll need your rest before your next shift." Keats nodded. “Thank you Sir,” She pulled herself to a more formal stance, She smiled gently, “If you need me I’ll be about, my sleep schedule is shot at the moment, and I’m used to long shifts from the Corps.” (Reply Methor only IYW) Nodding simply, Rosalynd took her leave, sitting in an officer for a while, scanning through policy documents, and roster changes before standing up and leaving. She moved, catlike through the bustling bay. The back of her neck tingled, as if she felt eyes on her. Years of Marine conditioning had almost given her a sixth sense, a preternatural feeling that she was being watched. Slowly, without movement or drama she cast her gaze about, seeking to find her unseen observer. Seeing nothing yet, she slipped through a throng of nurses bickering about their rounds, and then disappeared into the corridors, certain that she’d lost her observer. She never had these random flare ups of her spots itching until she was joined with the Tes Symbiote two years earlier. Nurse Duxo looked at her with his orange eyes. “ Perhaps the Ethyl 4-aminobenzoate is the cause.” Reena scowled at him. “ Do you think I don't know that ? I was a Doctor for almost 80 years mind you.” Nurse Duxo hit her arm with a Hypsoray. Reena jumped out of her seat. “ What in the hell did you just do to me ?” She asked angrily. Nurse Duxo held up a hypospray. “ Yesterday I came in here after you left and scanned for skin particles. I was able to obtain the particles I needed and synthesized, which I hope is a solution to your dermatological issues…” “ So you just experimented on me and….” Reena paused. “ The itching…it has stopped.” “ I was able to determine that you were experiencing an imbalance of Interleukin-4 a cy…” “ A cytokine protein, yes yes I know what it is.” Reena said to him. “ Due to your mixed Terran and Trill heritage it appears that you have mutated eosinophils known as PY112, but now you should be fine as I believe I have corrected the issue.” Nurse Duxo said proudly. “ Well thank you Ive veen dealing with this on and off for the last two years, but nex…HEY!!!” Reena yelled as he slapped her with another hypospray on her neck. “ What the F^(#” She said to him. “ That one was to offset the nausea that my treatment would have caused.” Nurse Duxo replied. “ You can't just go around slapping people with hyposprays whenever you want.” Reena said and sat back down. “ Besides, it would have been nice if you started this entire conversation by mentioning that you had a solution.” “ I knew you would pester me about trials, I successfully treated your condition and also successfully avoided your condescending assessment of my job.” “ Well if I didn't owe you 20 strips of Latinum, I would report you to Dr. Dural for attacking me with hyposprays.” Reena said to him and she finished typing information into the holographic display in front of her face. “ There you go, the results for Petty Officer Feko's Neurodegeneration panel.” She said as his wrist mounted device activated and emitted a holographic display of the results. “ Took long enough.” Nurse Duxo remarked as he looked at the results. Reena ignored his comment about the time it took to generate the test results. “ Looks to me to be the residual effects of the Dolvarian Flu.” Duxo closed the holographic patient chart. “ I will analyze the results myself, you are not qualified to make that assessment.” “ You are a Nurse Practitioner so that means only one of us has ever been a doctor.” Reena said, speaking of the second host of the Tes Symbiote, Dr. Tolim Tes, a reconstructive surgeon who in his youth specialized in alien illnesses. “ So go on tell me what's the treatment plan ?” Duxo looked at her. “ Gene therapy treatment should take about 45 minutes.” Reena looked at with a blank face. Her pale and dotted skin illuminated by the light of the terminal in front of her. “ What sort of gene therapy ?” “ Gene addition.” Duxo said confidently. “ Mmm nah, Wrong.” Reena responded. “ You'll want to use Gene production therapy, it's more precise and should take about an hour, the patient will have a bit of a headache after the procedure but that can be handled easily with a pain reliever.” “ I'll take your suggestion under advisement.” Duxo said. “ Thank you, Lieutenant Tes.” “ No problem big guy.” Reena replied and hit him on the chest with the back of her hand in a playful manner. “ If you use my suggestion I owe you only 10 strips.” Duxo shook his side to side with a smirk and walked out of the lab. Reena turned and looked at Ensign Edwards who was looking at her. “ How long have you been back from your break ?” “ About 5 minutes.” Ensign Edwards replied. “ Well I'm going on mine. I'll be back in 30 minutes or so.” Reena said as she logged off her terminal in the dimly lit lab and walked out. She was on the second level of the Promenade, looking over the railing and observing the various people who were just going about their day. Since being joined two years ago Reena had become a virtual menagerie of memories, personality quirks and talents. Before being joined, Reena had no ear for music or eye for art, but now could play 6 instruments and could paint, draw like a master. Talents she gained from the third host of the Tes Symbiote, Zeri Tes. Zeri was a rebellious, artistic, extreme exhibitionist who lived life by her own rules. She was only with the Tes Symbiote for ten years before her untimely demise, but had made a tremendous impact. The only true aspect of Reena's former pre-joined self that remained was her love for watching people and imagining their names and trying to guess the details of their lives. This was a game she had played with her human mother on Trill as a child. But this day was different, Reena was looking for someone she had spotted earlier that morning, someone for a reason she couldn’t explain, seemed familiar. So familiar in fact that Reena couldn't get her out of her head. As Reena waited, hoping to see her again it happened. She saw the woman walking across the promenade and on the lower level. Reena moved towards the woman as quickly as she could without running and making it overly obvious. She needed to see this woman up close for herself. ~ The Academy ? That has to be it.~ Reena thought to herself as she got closer to the red haired woman in the blue starfleet uniform. Reena finally caught up with her. “ Excuse me.” Reena said as she reached the woman. ( Reply Keats) ( Posted by Rob) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... She would be the first to admit she wasn’t the marine that her mother had been, she’d garnered some success and reputation, but if she was true to herself she would admit that she’d probably have maxed out as Gunney. That having been said, that didn’t mean she hadn’t developed the battlefield sense to know when things were off kilter. She’d spent the last couple of hours reading, catching up with ship level policies and protocol. If she were forced to explain it, she’d have to say primarily it would be footstep sounds. Typically footsteps passed in a straight line, passed one ear and into the other. However steady footsteps make the same turns through crowds and corridors. She was weary, sure, but she’d been on recon ops more times than she could count, and knew when she was being followed. She slowed her pace looking about her, seeing that the nurses around her would soon be back on their rounds. Reena finally caught up with her. “ Excuse me.” Reena said as she reached the woman. Rosalynd felt the other woman's presence, not close enough to feel body heat, but close enough that her words echoed slightly off the walls near her. Rosalynd sighed, then slowly turned, blinking slowly, then stared at the woman in front of her, staring at her with piercing pale jade green eyes. (Reply Tes) “You want to explain why you’re tailing me?” Rosalynd said, annoyance flashing across the tension in her eyes. “Looking from the floor above was smooth, but you suck ass at following people, your footsteps were clumsy at best. Explain.” She stared at the other woman, a Trill, or perhaps half judging by the more subtle markings on her neck. I suppose I owe you that. My name is Reena Tes.” She said, motioning her own hand towards herself. “ And you look strangely familiar, so familiar in fact that I decided to suck ass at following you to tell you that you look familiar.” Reena said, talking in her British accent that she inherited from Tezik. My name is Reena Tes.” She said, motioning her own hand towards herself. “ And you look strangely familiar, so familiar in fact that I decided to suck ass at following you to tell you that you look familiar.” Reena said, talking in her British accent that she inherited from Tezik. “Pleased to meet you Reena.” Rosalynd said, noting the unusual accent, “I’m Rosalynd, its good to meet ones stalker, it makes things a lot less…creepy.” She chuckled to herself. “ I'm not a stalker and yes yes I know that is exactly what a stalker would say, but I saw you earlier and I just had a feeling.” Reena said as she walked next to the woman. “Feeling how?” Roz said, genuinely interested. “I don’t think that we’ve met, there weren’t many Trill at the Academy, and even fewer in the Corps.” (Reply Tes) “Tell you what, I’m going to grab a coffee and a bite to eat, you’re more than welcome to join me? Astrometrics Officer, Ensign La'Kura - 1236) “ Oh yes please, Captain. Anything from home ?” La'Kura asked. “Mineral water from the spring East of the Se'Tar camp.” It wasn’t a question, more a statement of fact. “ You programmed that into the replicator yourself didn't you ?” La'Kura asked with a chuckle. “I may have tried my hand at some replicator tweaking." Keira admitted. “ In the Academy I programmed at least two dozen options into the replicator in my quarters. Everything from Chita Tea to Mikor juice.” La'Kura laughed. It was nice to talk with someone who had similar familiarities. The Captain handed her a drinking glass filled three quarters with the stated clear liquid. “ Thank you, Captain.” La'Kura said and took a drink. “Well, is it anything like the spring east of your home?” Keira asked, wondering if her palate was any different. “ This is perfect. If commanding a starship gets old you could definitely have a job programming beverages from insignificant backwater planets like ours.” La'Kura joked. “I’ll keep that in mind.” Keira said evenly. “So, science?” La'Kura held a hand to her mouth and swallowed the water. “ Excuse me ?” “What drew you to it?” Keira asked, informally beginning the discussion. “ Oh yes.” La'Kura replied. “ Well truthfully looking up and seeing the distant stars and knowing that some of those stars had worlds like ours and each seeing their own night skies even though they were looking at the same stars. Take Epsilon Sagittarii B, it belongs to 284 known constellations. 3 member worlds of the Federation even had ancient cultures that viewed the star as a deity of some degree or another.” La'Kura paused and looked towards the windows of Captain Merek's ready room. “ Epsilon Sagittarii B is the star of the Qo'noS.” La'Kura added and looked at Captain Merek. “ I wanted to not only see the stars but be among them, to understand them.” “You've certainly gotten a head start. Top marks in Astrometrics and other science disciplines, a firm grasp of philosophy, a certain poetic license what you just said, all you're missing is martial arts study and you're well on your way to being a regular Renaissance woman. Don't tell me you study Mo’kabra too?” La'Kura looked at her and smiled. “ Mok'bara ? Or course I did. My father taught my brother and I as children. I even got the chance to study with V'Kiran.” La'Kura said, mentioning a rather well known Romulan who arrived on Carraya IV just after the destruction of Romulus. V'Kiran had become a Mok'bara master. “Always had trouble with the Bat’leth.” Keira said shaking her head. “ Oh I'm absolutely dreadful with a Bat'leth.” La'Kura laughed. “My father always teased me that I didn't have the ridges for it.” “Some of the best Bat’leth fighters don't have ridges at all. I should know I fought one of them and won.” Keira said. “ Oh Really? How did you beat them then?” La'Kura asked with a raised brow. “I magnetized the floor, ripped it out of his hands! I used science and Engineering to my advantage. If I hadn't he surely could have killed me.” Keira elaborated. “ Oh my, that actually sounds pretty traumatic. Who was he ?” La'Kura asked. “Who is a story for another time.” Keira teased. “ I completely understand, a starship Captain doesn't have time to chit chat all day.” She laughed softly. Keira let her believe what she wanted to believe to avoid delving into a dark memory. “I have just been cleared for more intense physical training again.” “ Well if you ever need a Mok'bara partner and you don't mind me being a lowly science geek with one pip, I'd be more than happy to join you, advanced warning…” La'Kura paused and held up a finger and smiled. “ I'm not a very good fighter. I messed around with the simulations on the Holodeck and could only handle level 2, I tried level 3 setting and the program glitched out, I reported it to engineering.” “What sort of glitch?” Keira asked. “I'm more familiar than most..” ~Because the majority of the Klingon programs are mine.~ “..I might be able to clear it up without involving a ticket.” “ I set the difficulty to level 3 and a very odd and out of place Romulan appeared, said hello then the program crashed.” La'Kura explained. ~Sounds like Gram. Did she get into my programs?~ “Where there any specific commands that you put in that brought you to level three?” Keira asked looking to get to the bottom of it. “ I asked the holodeck for access to the Mok'bara training program and asked for a jungle setting and a recreation of a jungle appeared…” La'Kura paused. “ Funny thing is, the first thing I noticed was an Arboreal needle snake scurrying off. It was there that I realized that this wasn't any jungle, it was…it was home.” Remarked. “ I then requested 1 sparring partner. We sparred at level one then I asked for a Mek'leth and sparring level 2. That went really well, so I proceeded to ask for level 3 and that's when the holodeck started flickering and the romulan appeared then the entire program crashed. I'm no programmer but it was almost like one program bled into another.” ~ Program bleed is possible, though highly unlikely. Need to narrow it down.~ “It looking like Carraya is probably because it borrowed heavily from my programs as I tend to do when I program tropical rainforests,” the Captain shrugged, “it's what I know.” There was a pause then Keira asked the final question. “Describe this Romulan.” La'Kura described the appearance of the Romulan in great detail. “ …Oh and he had bright blue eyes…” she concluded. “ I hope I didn't do anything wrong, not the foot I wanted to get off on with you, Kei…Captain Captain, Sorry.” La'Kura had almost forgotten that Keira, the daughter of Tovus Merek, wasn't just that, she was Captain Merek of the USS Hades. Keira had noticed the near faux pau bordering on overfamiliarization, but chose not to bring attention to it. “It's fine. I don't think you did anything wrong.” ~A algorithm bleed is possible. It's also possible that the computer needed a more robust program dealing with the young ensign’s meteoric rise through the program levels. Gram would be a logical pull. Of course Gram could have gotten curious too.~ Keira worked it out in her head. She was silent for a couple beats. “It sounds like I'm familiar with the program that showed up, because it's my personal sparring program.” “ I don't, I don't understand, a sparring program made its way into another program ?” She asked rhetorically. “ I am sorry all of that stuff is beyond my skill.” “Algorythm bleed is still possible. It's also possible you were being modest in your estimation of your own abilities and the computer had to pull my program to give you a challenge. Then my privacy settings kicked in, making the program go back into storage.” Keira explained the more mundane possibilities. “ I think I understand a bit better now. Well my offer still stands Captain Merek, if you ever need a sparring partner don't hesitate. I'm not sure there are many on the ship who are familiar with Mok'bara.” She said and finished her mineral water and placed her empty glass on the replicator to return it. “I suppose you're right.” Keira said, though she knew the people familiar with the style by name. There weren't many. “There aren't many, I'll give you a call the next time I practice with a Bat'leth.” La'Kura smiled and extended her hand. “ Tru Qapla, Captain.” She said using a conjoined variation of the Romulan parting of ‘ Jolan Tru’ roughly meaning find peace and the Klingon parting of ‘ Qapla’ roughly meaning success. Among the people of Carraya IV it was extremely common to have phrases spoken with both languages joined together. Admittedly La'Kura spoke very little Romulan, but was fluent in Klingon. Keira took the offered hand in the common human gesture. “You’re dismissed, Ensign.” Keira said, returning the smile. “I’ll be watching your career with great interest.” La'Kura smiled and walked out of the ready room, a weight lifted off her shoulders. She held up a hand and the younger crew members all seemed to lean forward in anticipation. “In fact, computer, inform substitute engineers for each of the alpha shift roster for engineering team A-2 and 3. They are to have one day rest and recuperation period.” The 7 members of the teams whooped and thanked her. “You know what thy say, ‘you be good to mamma and she’ll be good to you,’” The human engineers smirked but the non humans looked at her puzzled. “Explain it to them on the way out,” she chuckled. “I can’t wait to tell the Captain about how proud I am of you. Dismissed.” She watched them file out of the main engineering control area and she scanned the majority or the engineering space. The warp corp and the working members of beta shift. ~the joy when all things are working as they should.~ she took a deep contented breath and considered going to beam me up for a well deserved Orion ale. Out of habit she checked her portal and found a new message…… from home. She grabbed a padd and logged herself off of duty and exited train engineering as she went to ‘Beam me up’ ordered that ale and took a seat. She found a spot in the corner where the image couldn’t be seen and sent the sound to her universal translator imbedded in her ears. An elderly Orion woman was sitting in a comfortable plump chair with a dainty cup held between her hands. What began was an animated monologue in Orion. “Heeeellooooooo Darrrrlingggg!-“ the older woman’s voice projected excitedly. “It’s your nana, but I guess you can. See that. I haven’t heard from you since you last posting and I am needing to know you are ok. I also wanted to remind you that my 100th year life celebration is in one month. I hope you can make it back to the colony to see me. Most of us don’t make it to 100 you know.” Her smile never fsultered. “I am making that contain cake you like with the extra pudding sauce and I so want to see you. I MISSSS you darrrrliiinnnggggg! Can’t wait to hear back! All my love!!!” The image ended and Adnora absent mindedly swirled her Orion ale in her glass before taking a slow sip. She glanced around the room at the people enjoying their leisure time in the cafe. She wiped her eyes and pulled a folded padd from her pocket. It was one not connected to ship systems and she tapped it to th Starfleet issued padd downloading the message. Then she took an ear piece from the other padd and laid it on her temple and pushed play again. The message started again, and Nana’s voice said, “Heeeellooooooo Darrrrlingggg!-“ but she pushed a code on her padd and the right and sunny image changed to a dark humid and smoky bridge interior of an Orion pirate ship. “Hello Darling, I just got word your ship will be at DS9 for a crew pick up. It’s time. Be ready.” The screen went dark again and she promptly deleted the message. She already knew the fake message would defragment and destroy the hidden message after she took it was played. She leaned back and bit her lower lip. Well the new ?Emark? Remark? Demark? Would be a good engineer. She sighed. This had been so wonderful. She didn’t want to do this she just didn’t want to…. Navi Doshi From: emarderok2 at gmail.com (Wayne Fromm) Date: Sat, 17 Jan 2026 16:39:12 -0500 Mission: Homecoming Day: 2 Stardate: 2446.10.17 (USS Hades - Counseling Center - EO Lieutenant Emar Derok & Counselor Dr.(Lt.) Navi Doshi -1735) Emar had arrived 5 minutes early and checked in for his first session with Counselor Dr.Doshi. He looked at the artwork on the walls in the waiting area. A framed image of a waterfall was crooked and it was driving him a bit crazy. Emar moved the couch that was under the painting away from the wall and fixed the frame to make it straight. He slid the couch back into position. He sighed with relief as he sat down on a chair and as he did he noticed it had a diagonal sway to it. ~ The legs are uneven.~ Emar stood up and backed away from the chair. “ I'm just going to stand right here.” After Navi received the notification from reception that her patient had arrived five minutes early, she observed him for a moment. The picture that was supposed to calm patients seemed to have the opposite effect on this patient. First the picture, moving the couch to get to it, then he looked at the chair and just began standing. She decided to put him out of his misery and just bring him in early. She walked out, small in stature but her smile warmed the room as she entered. “Lieutenant, if you’re ready?” “ Ah yes. Dr. Doshi. I am ready.” Emar said as he walked back and entered her office. She lead him back to one of the counseling offices, and wordlessly motioned for him to have a seat. Before she was able to start her customary opener the young Cardassian began to speak. “ Let me start off by saying that most of my counseling sessions have for the most part been held via subspace. I am medicated but I am nervous, White coat anxiety I think they call it.” He said and smiled at her instantly, noticing several key features about her appearance. The engineer in him became excited. “ You're a liberated Borg, my goodness forgive me for saying this but it is an absolute honor to meet you. What a remarkable story you must have.” Emar caught himself. “ Sorry ... .its my nerves.” “No need to apologize.” Navi assured him. As her eyes fell upon him her remaining Borg subprocessors did what they always do. The information streamed across her field of view, visible only to her. ~[ Species 2000, adult male…]~ “We’re not here about me, we're here about you. I will tell you people in my profession helped me come to terms with what happened to me. They helped me and now I'm trying to help you.” “ And people in your profession are some of the most selfless individuals, but like you said we are here about me.” Emar said and sat down. “ My charts will show you that I have extreme OCD that I am managing through counseling and medication, 50mg of Neuralyxine once a day, but even with that I still have my moments where my anxiety allows my OCD to bleed through.” “Like in the waiting room.” Navi clarified. “Anxiety, are you taking medication for that?” “Yes, like in the waiting room.” He responded as he fiddled with his fingers. “ I am taking 20 mg of Xaxynol compounded with 10 mg Hermemadine twice a day to help with my anxiety, but unfortunately for me I carry a unique trait found in Cardassians with Bajoran heritage that affects the way my body absorbs certain enzymes. So the anxiety medication doesn't do its job all the time.” He said with a laugh. “ But I think we should just get to the Meat and the Potatoes of what causes all of this…dysfunction.” “Please, do.” “ I don't like working with others, I find working as part of a team to be exhausting and frustrating. I shouldn't have to explain my process to people who have the same profession as me. They took the same classes, have the same credits in the same fields as me. We were exposed to the same information, so why do I need to explain anything to them, they should see the solution just like I do. I don't know.” Emar said as he let his frustration show. “ Explaining myself, it slows the process down.” “Do you feel that all officers are interchangeable?” Doshi proposed. Emar thought for a moment as his blue blue eyes looked down at his fingers. “ Hmm,” Emar sounded. “ I am not sure, but it is possible that I feel that “ “You're a unique individual, Emar. Is it that hard to believe that in the uniqueness you bring a special quality to your work via your perceptions?” “ No it isn't. I do put a lot into my work. I take pride in what I do.” Emar replied. “They can't see what you see because they aren't you,” the counselor explained. “ That does lead to another line of thought.” Emar mentioned. “Such as?” Navi asked her curiosity piqued. It was always better to get information from a patient on their own terms, rather than single word or sentence answers. “ I am so critical about my own work, perhaps I may even be projecting that criticism onto the performances of those I work with, expecting them to work as I do to arrive at the same results that I do to work seamlessly as a collective.” As soon as the words left his mouth Emar instantly regretted using the word collective. “ I…Uhh…I meant nothing by that.” “It was a common word in Federation standard before its more recent reputational shift.” She said matter of factly. “ But I must admit at times it would just be easier to function in such a manner. To have the valued traits of the team coming together in perfect harmony to complete the task, no need to explain your thought process because your thoughts are theirs and theirs are yours. It would make work as an Engineer extremely efficient.” Navi nodded and made a note one the PADD that had been sitting on the arm rest of the chair, untouched until this point. “ I believe to a certain extent I am a control freak, as the humans call it, but instead of bringing others down with the desire to control the situation, I keep the need to be in control within me, hurting only myself.” Emar said as he thought. “Control freak is a common but ugly colloquialism,” she began, “I'd have to bring you in for a few more sessions to be sure, but right now from what you've told me so far it more aligns with Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder, which can have a need to control ones self as a Hallmark variable.” “ A personality disorder ? Oh my that doesn't sound good at all.” “Again, a few more variables to work out.” She cautioned, “and I think it will take a few sessions to get to the bottom of what's causing it so we can start helping you manage your symptoms.” Emar sat in silence for a few moments and looked at the floor as if staring through it. “I don’t want you to get discouraged.” Navi said calmly. “Why don’t we start with your early life? Do you remember any of it?” “ Growing up on Bajor I was always told, behind closed doors, by my parents to tread very carefully around the Bajorans. The occupation ended decades ago but for many if not all Bajorans families the occupation is still fresh in their minds.” Emar said as he stared off at nothing in particular. “ They watched us closely every time I traveled into The Melan market region, all eyes were on me. I was taught…rather trained by my parents to walk with my hands deep in my pockets to avoid accusations of stealing any of the goods in the market. I…uhhh.” Emar paused and shook his head, obviously getting pretty emotional. “ I don't remember ... .I just don't remember…” he said and sat forward placing his head in his hands. ~[Cortisol spike detected.]~ “This is a safe space Emar,” the Doctor assured him. “We’ll always go at your pace. We don’t have to dig straight to the core of planet Emar in our first session, Okay?” Emar nodded. His heart was racing. ~ …They hurt me….~ He thought to himself. “If you’re not up for it, we can save it for a later session.” Doshi offered. “ I think that is best. I believe a good walk will do me some good.” The Cardassian mentioned. “I think we’ve made some real progress. A preliminary diagnosis, which we can change if something else shows up that fits you better. Have your medications been causing you problems?” “ No, my medications have been helping tremendously, without them I'm a wreck.” He laughed half heartedly. “We’ll keep your medications as they are for now.” She said writing some orders in her PADD. “ Thank you Dr. Doshi.” He said. “ I know, I started to get carried away, There are some issues to unpack. This was my first in person session, perhaps the proximity to another person in this environment allowed me to be more in touch.” Emar said as he tried to rationalize everything. “I'm glad to hear that.” Navi said, smiling warmly. Emar stood and extended his hand to her. “ Thank you for all that you do. Your role is truly vital.” Pleasantly surprised she took the offered hand and shook it. “You need anything, feel free to call. We'll schedule another appointment next week.” Emar walked out of the office and carried on to get some rest before dinner. The counsellor looked around, convinced that she had been joined by someone. "Hello?" Navi called out. A moment of silence stretched into nothingness. No response. She entered back into the main lobby and waiting room. Looking around, seeing no one. "Hello?" She asked again even more unsure. Just as she was about to shake it off, and go back to something productive, ~" You should ask him out."~ coming seemingly from everywhere, and nowhere. "Computer, who is in this room?" Navi ordered. [Currently only Doctor Navi Doshi Chief Counsellor is in this room. No other biosigns present.] "Show yourself." Navi demanded. As if walking out of the bulkhead, a patch of blackness, empty of substance, began filling up with digital icons in green. Only taking an instant, once filled as if blowing up a balloon it gained depth. The icons were replaced with color, large patches at first then the details filled in. A shape coalesced, humanoid. A female wearing some sort of ceremonial garb or gown, with plumes of downy feathers at the shoulders in reds and violet hues. Her dark hair was held up with three silver metal pins. The slitted gown cascaded on the floor. Larger than average eyes peered at Navi, settling on something seen dozens of times before. She held out her hands as if saying "Ta da!" ~"You summoned, dear one?"~ Navi's eyes narrowed as she was putting it all together who this woman was. The overdressed figure moved her hand in a circular motion impatiently as if her efforts could speed the thought process along. "The planet..." Navi started. ~"Yes.."~ she smiled. "Lyssaria?" Navi continued. ~"Right again!"~ "Concordia? Cordy?" Cordy held her hands up clenching her fists then released them. ~"So proud."~ "I thought you were..." ~"Gone?... oh, no dear one, never. Think of it as.... hibernation."~ "Hibernation, where?" ~" The hippocampus, I think... or some cranial node you still have."~ she shrugged. "How can I see you, talk to you?" Navi asked. ~" Boooring!" ~ Cordy said, becoming annoyed. She then smiled. ~"Tell me about that male specimen that just left. The species 2000?"~ "Lieutenant Emar? The Cardassian Engineer?" Navi asked. ~"Cardassian, so regal. An engineer, so he works with his hands? Does he have strong hands, Nav?"~ Concordia leaned in close. "Is this what going crazy is like? I must be having a psychotic break! I have to tell someone, Doctor Dural..." Doshi tapped her combage, "Doshi to Sick..." ~"Don't you finish that sentence silly girl!"~ She held up her hand in a halting motion, ~" What will happen, if you do that? I'll answer for you, they'll relieve you of duty! Neither one of us wants that."~ Doctor Doshi played out what the policy was in her head. She would be relieved of duty. Placed on medical leave until they sorted it out. Illandrid would be overwhelmed having to cover the entire ship. "What's wrong with me?" Navi's face fell with the realization. ~"One cranium,"~ she held up a finger, and then a second, ~" two tenants. We'll figure something out. Until then, just think of me as your best friend who's with you always."~ Cordy smiled, it was almost predatory. "Great." Navi said, "I'm sure we'll have a lovely time." He activated it and began to scan itscontents which contained the ship’s status update. He sipped his cup as hescrolled from one section to another cover each department in turn. From thelooks of the reports the ship was doing well and that there were no major problemsindicated. He knew that not everything was entered into reports and would gofor a walk through the ship before he clocked off. There was a soft ping fromhis console and he looked down. On the console was an image of a younger Ire ina flight suit with a group of other flight suited ensigns standing outside the 1stFighter Wing Complex on Mars.   He paused for a moment scrutinizing the image as helooked at the faces staring back at him and shook his head.   “We were all so young.”   He gave a slight laugh as he glanced at the star date.   “Not so long ago. It’s amazing to see how much hadchanged in two years.”   He sighed to himself. As he thought about how eagerand full of excitement they were. Zooming around in their fighters feeling invincible. The first real mission of the Wing to the belt where he had to punch out andhis reputation began.   He grinned at that knowing that his controlled crashlandings had become gossip which he had not shook off even though it had nothappened for a long time.   “Especially not on the bigger ships anyway.”   Things had settled down after that with training andlong-range patrols through the solar system, going to Trill for a diplomatic visit. The wing changed over time people would arrive and move on depending on theneeds of Starfleet but the core original group had stayed and a few peoplejoining.   He smiled.   “Yes, like Greta. I would not have though that Iwould be married and with child when I first met here.”     “And then came Wolf.”   His grin wavered and he sipped his drink. Wolf oneof the hardest fight the Wing had ever participated in. He still had occasionalnightmares about that fight. The sensor returns full of enemies. All pretenceof formation and tactics went out the airlock. It was knife fight range in a fighter, and he had never flown like that before or since. Flights and wingmen would justas soon form before being split up again. Every way you turned there was anenemy lining up to get a kill shot.   “But we made it. If we can get her through the night, her chances increase markedly. We’ve done what we can. Its up to her will now.” Sara nodded, saying nothing more for a moment, but leaned forward, resting her head on the glass. After a while, she spoke. “Assuming she pulls through, will she have full mobility again? You know what she’s like Aimee, the Corps is her entire being.” “Like mother like daughter.” Aimee said with a hint of a raised eyebrow. Sara had been a titan in the marine corps, short in stature, but with a will that shamed many twice her size. “Look, we’ll know more when she comes round, but until then, I can’t say. All going well I’ll get her onto Captain Blake’s Physical Therapy program, she’ll need counselling too. “I can’t lose her Aimee,” Sara said with a sigh. "I need to thank you, for doing this I mean, I know you didn't need to." "You were my crew back on the old Hades, you stood by me a dozen times or more. It's a loyalty I'll never forget." The weeks rolled past, and almost against probability, Rosalynd healed well, and showing a will akin to her mothers, made a fast recovery and in what seemed like short order, sat in bed, a determination about her after each therapy session that both went by quickly, and dragged by. Looking up from the PADD that she was reading, Rosalynd smiled as her mother entered the room. “Mum!” Roz beamed. “Wasn’t sure you were coming today, you had that dinner. Or was that yesterday?” “Yesterday.” Sara chuckled, waving away her daughters apology. “You were sleeping a bit yesterday apparently.” “Training was intense, and I had counselling. It’s hard work this recuperation.” Sara nodded, a few things in her mind moving into place in the conversation. “How’s the counselling going?” “Usual drill.” Rosalynd rollers her eyes. “Examining my feelings, my thoughts, fears. The constant stream of therapists is getting to me, the Doctors and Nurses are in and out of here all the damned time, it’s bloody stressful.” Sara nodded. “Yeah, I remember.” She looked at her daughter's hand, as she continued. “Can you tell me about what happened? When you were hurt I mean.” “You’ve not read the reports? The citations?” “I have,” Sara answered, “but I wanted to hear it from you.” She playfully tapped her daughter on the nose with a fingertip. “Call it a mixture of mothers love and professional curiosity.” “Okay…” Rosalynd pulled herself up the bed to a sitting position, resting her arms on her knees. “We were out on patrol, our section, eight of us, were trying to manoeuvre around to a point to pin down troop movements that could have encircled and hit behind us. Walked straight into a secondary ambush that they’d set up. Five of us got lucky, three didn’t. I sent the forward four to pin down the ambush while I tried to recover and stabilise the injured. Got hit by an IED as the last man was pulled out. Can’t remember anything after that.” All the time through her retelling of the encounter Sara was looking at her daughter's body language, a worry that had been festering blossomed as she realised a number of things. Rosalynd caught her mothers gaze, looking at her hands. “What is it?” Sara sighed, wishing that that wasn’t necessary, but the things in her mind almost took over and started speaking for her. “You want to know the problem you have?” Rosalynd shrugged. “Sure.” she answered almost noncommittal. “Your therapists have got it all wrong..” “Mum, what are you talking about?” “You want to know what’s going to get you killed? Your squad killed?” Sara knew that she was being overblunt, but she could see two paths ahead, and she knew that Rosalynd was being given some very bad advice. Rosalynd sighed. “Speak, old woman, wise one of the mountains, sage of the seven ages, progenitor of my being.” “They think that you have PTSD, and yet you are under considerable stress now and your hands remain utterly still. They have it all the wrong way about.” “Get out.” Rosalynd snapped. “Get out right now.” Sara stood, and sighed, she knew the signs from her own time in the corps, “The thing that’s going to get your squad killed?” “I said get out.” Sara sighed, nodded and walked slowly toward the door. For a moment she was just Rosalynd’s mother, but then the Command Sergeant Major that she had been resurfaced, and she saw a young Marine who was in danger of making some very poor choices. Just before she left, her entire Marine bearing still present despite her advancing years, she stopped at the door. “You aren’t traumatised by the danger Staff Sergeant, you yearn for it.” (Reply None) (Posted by Mark) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Through he burst of smoke and flashes fire from the cut door panel exploded inward. The security forces fired phasers into the new wmpty space but what responded was a tossed weapon that exploded with smoke and flashing light. Then several photon grenades. Semaj saw them come near and pass his space in the nest adjacent corridor, knowing that he and his team were in danger. Everyone dove for cover. It would not be enough. Semaj accessed Jeffrey tube junction and dived in as explosions rocked the deck. Flames and energy followed him in the Jeffrey’s tube throwing him fowsrd in the remnant concussion and making him hit the deck hard. He tried to roll it out and catch his breath and tapped his con badge. “Computer maximum forcefields in this section.” He heard the sound of fields activating and he pushed himself up. Phaser fire ensued an he braced himself on the side and opened the door. Between him and surviving members of the team were five raiders firing amd wearing armor. He raised his phaser to maximum and leveled his phaser firing directly at the farthest raiders armor joint. The energy found purchase between safety points and the enemy partially vaporized in its suit falling to the deck. He aimed again at a second affecting the same result. But a third huge one spun around and fired. Semaj was able to side step and fire but the beam missed its mark. The large ininjured raider rushed at him helmet bent forward clearly intending to ram him full force. Semaj ran forward rushing toward the raider closing the distance quicker, ducking to the left, grabbing the opponents arm throwing him off balance and knocking him off his footing. His team were engaged with the fourth and fifth of the team of the invading force and Semaj reached in his jacket and pulled out his favored weapon, a gift from his husband. With the correct press to the right area the device activated the materialization sequence and in his hand stood a thin but unyielding Vulcan hand to hand weapon. The lirpa, a long staff with a fanned blade on the top and a bludgeoning blunt end. It was perfectly balanced and the bladed edge was one molecule thick with both and electrical charge. As the raider jumped back to his feet, quicker Han the Brit’s size seeed likely, raising its spear tipped repulsive rifle. Semaj had already moved swinging his lirpa bringing the blunted end down on the arm, at the joint. There was a loud snapping crunching sound and the rifle dropped at an odd angle as the enemy arm snapped. Semaj kicked the weapon away but the enemy caught his leg tripping Semaj, who landed heavily on his back. The invader grabbed his speared rifle up with his other hand and brought it up to stab downward in to Semaj. Despite the difficulty to breathe, Semaj rolled using he lirpa to regain his feet. Both backed up in pain and reassessing. The Semaj pointed his phaser. Remove your helmet and drop your weapon. The enemy chuckled and pushed a button on his armor and Semaj immediately tapped his comm badge emergency intruder beam out self destruction devise activated ! “ Semaj saw a burst of light at the same moment the invader was cocooned in the transporter beam. It was their 3rd time having dinner together during the month Emar had been aboard. Emar and Nia were fond of each other's company. She also grew up on Bajor near the Kendra Valley region, although the two never met each other. “ So am I allowed to ask how your session went ?” Nia asked as she tore another piece off of the dinner roll in front of her. Emar placed his drink down, just having taken a sip. “ Ahh.” He sounded out after he swallowed. “ It was insightful, arousing even.” Nia looked at him and raised her brow at him. Emar noticed the look. “ No no not like that.” He responded. “ It was my first in person session with a counselor and I believe it was productive.” Emar explained. “ Yeah, Counselor Doshi works wonders from what I've heard. I've shared a few turbolift rides with her before, she was very nice.” Nia said and placed a portion of bread in her mouth. Emar leaned in slightly over the table and looked eyes with Nia. “ So you knew and didn't prepare me ?” He asked in a low volume. “ Know what ? That she has hair that I'd bust a plasma coolant tank open to have ?” Nia asked with a smile. “ No.” Emar said quickly. “ That she is…was…a Liberated Borg.” Nia looked at him with a confused look on her face. “ Why does that even matter ? She's a person and a starfleet officer.” Emar held up a hand. “ Yes yes I know that, but it would have been nice to know so that I could have prepared myself. Borgs and liberated Borgs are absolutely fascinating to me. As an Engineer I see them as perfection. Their technology shaped everything you see around us today, shields, weapons, communications, propulsion, medical practice, cybernetics. The list goes on and on. We are at least two centuries more advanced than we would have been without ever encountering the Borg.” Nia looked at him as she ran her finger through her red hair. “ Emar, Emar, Emar.” She chuckled. “ What ?” He asked. “ Did you tell her all of that ? Please tell me you didn't." Nia answered “ I may have made mention about how efficient it must be to have collective thought and how 2 would be beneficial as an Engineer working with a team.” Emar said and took a bite of his meal. Nia shook her head in disbelief. “ Most people look upon the liberated and are afraid, you however seem to admire them and the Borg Collective.” Emar laughed a bit. “ You aren't at all interested in them ?” “ The Liberated are people, before they are anything else, after that they are victims. We can't even begin to imagine the trauma they have gone through, yes there may be dozens of different stories from them, but we will never know the suffering they endured while part of the collective.” Nia said them paused. “ Don't look at her as an Engineer, look at her as a person looking at another.” Emar nodded his head. “ You are correct. I wouldn't want to let a mere fascination evolve into an obsession.” Emar looked at Nia. “ Care to discuss your day ?” Nia finished a sip of her wine. “ Well as you know we've been modifying the range of the comms link class 10 probes.” “ Of course, please continue.” Emar responded. “ I believe we can increase the effective range from 7.8 x 10 to the 10th power to 11.6 x 10 to the 10th power. This increase would have a tremendous benefit for Federation security.” Nia replied with a smile. Emar raised his glass to her. “ Not bad for a girl from a family of jewelry makers.” He laughed. “ Beats being from a family of Kava farmers.” She said as she raised her glass to him with a smile. “ Ooo ouch.” Emar said as their glasses touched. She had been selected by Romulan Republic Fleet Command to enter into the officer exchange program between the Republic and the Federation. She hadn't even applied for the posting, she had received word of the transfer with less than 10 hours to prepare herself. Over the course of the past 6 days she began the daunting process of sampling and analyzing numerous forms of Federation media. Everything from sports, movies, music and other forms of entertainment to proper etiquette when entering a room, eating a meal and even speaking. Delexa wanted to excel in her new assignment, setting the highest of standards for herself as she had done her entire career in the Republic Fleet. In her orders it stated that since she had exhibited the ability to adapt to various situations with ease, that command had chosen her as a selection of interest to represent the Republic Fleet. Delexa saw it as a massive hurdle in her career. She knew Romulan crews, Romulan systems, Romulan ships and Romulan space. The Federation was unknown to her, and Interplanetary Power in the galaxy that she had no personal interest in. Delexa really disliked the idea that she would have to potentially interact with Oa ujudhueiusmm'ukssdh ehlu'eri ehdhihss, Those who abandoned the Raptor, the deserters. The ones who fled Romulan space when the Star Empire collapsed to seek the comfort of the United Federation of Planets. Delexa and many in the Republic couldn't understand those who left and even went as far to refrain from calling them Rihannsu, The Declared, Those who Marched beneath the Raptor's wings. As she sat in her Romulan Republic uniform she scrolled through a list of delicacies from across the Federation. “ Tivarian Slugs, Denfar Lungs, Chulaton Spider Pie, Raw Taspar eggs, Alfarian Hair Pasta, Calamari , Frog legs...” She winced with disgust. “ The food of these people is going to kill me.” She said and closed the list and stood walking over to the window of her small room and looking out into space as they traveled at warp. “ Computer.” She said, “ Create a compilation list of musical pieces that are currently held in high favour among the Citizens of the United Federation of Planets ” [[ Playing Popular Music ]] The computer replied. “ That's one way of phrasing my request.” Delexa said as music started playing. Delexa crossed her arms and listened to the rhythmic and pulsating beat of the musical piece. She examined the wall where she saw the name of the artist and name of the song playing. “ The Redshirts, Away Away…” She read out loud. She swiped her hand on the wall to play the next song. This song blasted louder than the previous ones. The music was intense, the vocals sounded like the roaring of a Vivver Cat. She read the name of the artist and song. “ War for Stovokor, Bloodied Thy Blade…” She said and swiped to the next song. The next song was more upbeat and less angry sounding. “ Computer, narrow the list down to Terran artists.” The play list was narrowed down and another song started playing. Delexa listened to the words for about a minute as the female artist sang about a love that had scorned her but she couldn't resist the temptation to follow him. “ She'd be better off getting her priorities in order to make herself better, but yet she's content with being an absolute idiot that is addicted to inflicting emotional pain upon herself in the hopes that her lover will change…” Delexa said as she sat down. “Computer, stop music.” She said and the computer complied. Pulling a small device from her belt and placing it on the small table in front of her, she activated it. “ Centurion Delexa personal entry.” She began. “ I am 6 days into my journey and am due to arrive in 8 hours. For security reasons I have not been provided with any details of my assignment. It would be satisfying to have an answer to if I'll be serving aboard a starship or a space station. Even a partial crew manifest would be useful in preparing myself for this assignment. It would be most undesirable to have to serve under the command of a Klingon or with one for that matter, but if that is to be the circumstance of my assignment, then I will accept the situation.” She said with a pause and tapped her fingers over left hand on the table. “ I wanted nothing to do with this, I was less than a year away from being given the opportunity to be a first officer and less than 5 away from having a command of my own. I served in four separate battles along the Klingon border in the past 9 months alone and now…and now I am being shipped off to the Federation.” She said with a brief maniacal laugh and shook her head. “ I know Commander Suvet had a hand in this. He never liked that I was serving on his ship and that fleet command assigned me as the third officer and command support. That man hated me for the moment I stepped aboard the Saekar. He knew who my grandfather was and never let me forget….” Her face was flushed with a hue of green. “ Suspend entry.” She said and the recording device deactivated. With not much to report, as they were still in transport, the interaction was short. She could tell something was weighing on him. Couldn't tell if it was the shift or something else. He'd bring it to her if she needed to. She made a mental note to herself to check on him at the beginning of his next shift. She tapped the bulkhead and a coffee station deployed out of the wall. The drip coffee maker Kellis had gotten her, various bags of coffee, Bolian, Columbian, Turkish and even some of the Raktajino that Kora had provided. She had made half of her fresh supply available to the crew via the Bean me up kiosk. In a moment of creativity Kellis had placed it on the menu under Captain's Reserve. "Computer one carafe of Carrayan spring water, one liter, room temperature." she commanded. With a twinkling light and a soft hum, the ordered article appeared on the pad. Keira placed the glass on the heating element and activated it. Selecting the Raktajino off to the side, she opened a filter paper and settled it into the conical receptor for the water. Followed by three scoops of the grounds. She tapped the side three times, settling the coffee granules. While she waited for the water to boil she opened a channel. Keira heard the chime indicating a presence at the door to her ready room. ~Must be Commander Solice.~ Keira thought. “Enter.” Taking a deep breath the door slid open, Quinna stepped in and said, “Goodmorning, Captain.” “First off, can I offer you some coffee? Real Raktijino from Qo'noS..” Keira said pouring a cup. Quinna smiled, “I retract my previous statement, Goodmorning, Goddess.” Quinna accepted the coffee and started with an inhale. Then not a a sip but a full drink crossed her lips. She waited for the captains lead. Keira poured a second cup for herself and explained how she came across the treasured substance. “You remember Ravok, from the Academy, Mars and our run in the Mystique to Trill Prime before Starbase Freedom was built? I still have ties to his adoptive Klingon mother. Treats me like a daughter…” Keira said, stirring sweetener and cream into her own cup. “Sends me a half palate quarterly, just lovely for long missions and late nights.” “You just have to love the mommas” Quinna became reflective, “That time seemed like ages ago. No matter how much things change, somethings always stay the same.” Quinna lifted her coffee cup like it was more of a coffee toast. Keira raised her own cup slightly and nodded, “Where would we be without them?” Quinna took another drink of her coffee, and let out an pleasurable , “hmmmm” “Though, I would love to reminisce, it's not why I invited you.” Keira said sitting down at her desk. “Ok,” Quinna started and set down her coffee, “So why did you invite me?” “I am curious what it is we're going to the Kuiper Belt to accomplish.” Keira tried broaching the subject delicately. “You helped me in a time of need, and I don't want to seem ungrateful, and if it's classified…” Quinna made a bobble in her mouth and slowly released the air. “Well….” Keira had run the files of Quinna’s team, more than one of the files were classified barring common observation. She didn't want to barge in like a targ in a French restaurant. “Its not an order,I’m not telling you as a Captain, I'm asking as an old friend. If you'll forgive the saying: My ship works best if the charts have a compass and charts to steer by.” Quinna took a deep breath. “About 25 years ago, A starship went into the Bajorian Wormhole and never returned. Well not until a few days ago. Our mission is to retrieve the ship.” but Quinna held back the personal ties as she did with the rest of her team, excet for Michael who knew it all. “A rescue mission?” Keira said, “we're pretty good at those. We just did one of those a few months ago, one of the Hades’ first missions.” Keira said spinning the desk terminal so that she could access it. “What's her registry number? We'll bring up the schematics.” “You will not find it in any of the data bases.” Quinna stated as an after thought. “Trust me, I tried. Not even a commissioning date for the ship and all records of the crew was wiped.” Quinna picked her cup back up and took a drink. She spun it around in her hand. “I few days ago, it emerged from the wormhole, sent a set of 25 yeal old codes to DS9, and then jetted off.” “Do you know anything about the ship? What class? Type of vessel?” Keira asked. “Well, I there is no official registry anymore…” Quinna choked a bit. “I just cannot say anymore. “I meant it when I loaned her to you. Still do. The Charron is yours for the duration of your mission.” Keira could tell she was holding back. Classification of need to know, she thought, was the most likely scenario. She didn't want to pry and put pressure on Quinna of having to choose further between Keira's request and any boon this mission would do for her career. “I appreciate it.” Quinna took a deep Breath, “This Mission is also personal.” she choked out. “We will be in the area, the Bajor Sector, if you need the back up. I'm going to approve the Marines conducting a training exercise in the actual Kuiper Belt. So they'll be potentially closer.” Keira explained, taking a tentative sip of her own drink. “I appreciate that. The ship that we are going to it home. My home. First 7 years of my life.” Quinna did not know where that come from. The felt safe to talk. Keira thought about that revelation. Revisiting your childhood in a detached way, it had only been roughly six years since she left home for the first time. “I can imagine.” Keira said, “My childhood was planet side. When I was seven, I hadn't been on a ship yet. We were agrarian. ” Quinna smiled, and took another sip of her coffee, “What happened back then, made us who we are today.” A pause, a sip, a small sob that was quickly stopped, “and Today, We have coffee.” “So presumably going after this ship, that you lived on during your formative years,” Keira said pausing for another drink, “ if you need a tow, the Cheron is not large enough to pull anything bigger than the old Constitution class starships, small escorts or science vessels by today’s standards, give us a call.” “I am hoping it will not come to that. I appreciate your offer.” now quinna needed to get her command on but she was not use to it. She still felt weird commanding others. “We’ll be conducting routine engine tests of our coaxial drive.” Keira explained, “Chief Alouron tells me it’ll be nothing that’ll keep us out of the next war. The Marines just put in a request for a live fire training exercise in the Kuiper belt; they'll be occupied, but available. If the need arises you can request them for assistance. The Jump ship they’ll be using is warp capable, so they’ll be closer and able to arrive quicker than us. Not who’d you want necessarily in a ship fight with their limited ship to ship capabilities, but if you want to storm a fortified position or repel boarders, they’re your guys.” Quinna nodded and made mental notes. “Major Masters is a professional, though he doesn’t come off that way. He’s a Major the equivalent of a Lieutenant Commander, you’re a full Commander, your higher rank coupled with command of your mission, he’ll follow your lead unless you’re incapacitated or mucking it up bordering on negligence. Since we both know the latter won’t happen.. “You never know, it could happen. I will keep those notes in mind and let the team know. Honestly, I have no idea what we are waling into. I find it weird that they would send a code and zoom away from DS9. I am hoping we can fill in the gaps to her absence.” Quinn stated as she finished the cup of coffee in her hands. “Should be interesting story upon our return.” [ Incoming transmission, USS Princeton.] “If you'll excuse me.” Keira said, “I'll have to take this. You need anything from me?” “We are good for now.” Quinna quickly stood. “I'll be available, call me if you do need anything.” Keira said then smiled mischievously. “I’ll make sure you get a kilogram of the coffee.” Quinna smiled, she appreciate it. “We will share another cup soon.” Quinna exited and headed back to her quarters. "Æfvadh" {Romulan: Be Welcome: Formal} If it was trepidation or ignorance of Human customs it took more than a couple beats for the Romulan to return the greeting. “ Viduus au paeti shaoi ben” { Romulan: Pleased to meet you, superior} Delexa said in a straightforward Romulan dialect in response to Captain Merek's use of the Romulan language. She had noticed that The captain's dialect seemed a bit off world, but still it was Romulan. " Urri sa'rhhæ" {Romulan:Come with me.} Keira said, it had been a while since she had spoken formally. “ I would be happy to join you, Captain Merek.” Centurion Delexa said as they walked out of the transporter room and into the corridors of the ship. As the pair left the transporter room, "Centurian, the file they sent was rather.. sparse. What department do you work in, for the Republic?" What department do you work in, for the Republic?" “ Command Support, Captain.” Delexa answered. “ The position is most commonly seen as a relief position to provide coverage for the various stations on the Bridge. Weapons, communications, navigation, sensors. I was the third officer of the RRW Saekar, Captain.” Captain Merek smiled as they entered the turbo lift. "Computer, Bridge." Delexa's initial thoughts were that Captain Merek seemed nice, but it was a all too well known that her father Tovus Merek was a wise and resourceful man. Delexa surmised that Captain Merek had learned how to defend herself and their resources. Delexa had never been to Carraya IV, but had heard the stories of their survival capabilities. Knowing that the inhabitants of colony world were able to fend for themselves as they had done many times in the past. In short, Delexa knew Captain Merek, like her father Tovus, was resourceful. Delexa stood in silence. She had read that it was common practice to engage in what Terrans called chit chat. “ Senator Jollen Merek, your grandfather served on the Senate's Continuing Committee when my own grandfather was Praetor. Senator Merek stood firm with the Praetor when it came to ruling Senator Cretak as a traitor…Captain Merek.” ( Reply Keira) “ No doubt they would accuse us of the same thing if they saw us here today, Captain Merek.” Delexa said as the doors of the turbolift opened to the bridge. And as expected the temporal vortex began to appear. “Instability beginning,” Skye reported from her station. “Increase chronitons by 2.63 percent Jayc instructed as he studied his own monitor.” “Aye,” the avian scientist responded. “Stabilizing.” They watched the vortex begin to spin like a horizontal energy vortex, looking like water in a sloshing circular spin stabilized into a seeping opening, through which they watched the stars swirl and move passed them some seeming to flutter hen nova others seemed to shrink away. “How far forward is this.?” Skye asked “Current estimation 12.6 billion years,” Jayc smirked. “Are we recording. She nodded. “Confirmed.” “Destabilizing again,” Skye warned. “ “Let it go. We need to study the findings, but if everything checks out we were able to recreate the finding of the Andorian departments of sciences with 1/32 the power.” “I will begin the diagnostics and analytics,” Skyes musical voice said. In her tenor, it was clear she was excited to be able to pen this paper with him. Jayc head turns toward th door with the closeness of a presence. And the door opened to admit his husband. “imzadi, nice surprise,” Semaj’s stoic Vulcan expression slipped slightly to something more angry. “Are you ok?” Semaj took a breath and readjusted his expression. “I have just had a communication from Vulcan asking why I chose to violate custom and marry.” Jayc raised an eyebrow. “Who on Vulcan?” “The High Command offices..” Jayc took a breath. -Maybe I should just destroy the second houses ability to be telepathic,,- he thought to himself. “They are aware they have no legal stance, but are…. Disappointed in my actions.” Jayc felt a second surge of anger bordering on rage. “What? What did you say.” “I told them that the time wasted with the communication was illogical as the emotional sentiment did not warrant discussion. I then transmitted the facts of my status and the background and formally protested my status.” Jayc felt the surge of hope from his co rolled mate. “And” “They said that the admiral had already forwarded the same argument and they would review the findings. They also offered to sanction my parents for illogical and abusive actions should my protest be granted.” “What will your family say?” “That is irrelevant. My only family is currently holding my hand.” Jayc looked down not even realizing he had gripped Semaj’s hand in both of his own. “You know who is doing this of course.” Semaj stepped forward and brushed his lips against his husbands. “We will prevail.” =^= Bridge to Lt. There was a brief glimpse of the seal of the office of the President of the Planet of Betazed then an incredibly regal woman sat at an elaborately adorned desk staring at t. “Tinmanrion Jayc?” She asked. “Yes Madam President.” Jayc answered mustering his diplomatic skills even though he felt mounting frustration at the barrage on his life. “Why am I being bothered with this nonsense. I have more important things to do than waste time when you know what you are supposed to do,” the haughty tone dripped condescending as she looked him over. Jayc raised an eyebrow simultaneously to Semaj’s own. Jayc slowly smiled. Not a friendly or apologetic smile. “How frustrating for you Madam President. Please hold,” he said as he leaned forward. Her eyes widened. “Wait! Don’t you put me on hold…..” her voice was cut off when he paused the transmission. He looked at his husband. “Want to sky kayak after this?” He asked. Semaj glanced at the screen then back at his husband. “I do.” Jayc nodded and reactivated the transmission. “Have I made my point Madam President?” The woman instantly leaned forward. “Do you know what I can do to you?” “Do you want to go back on hold or do you want to get to the real point?” “How dare you!” She sputtered. “I can call for your immediate arrest!” “For what? Putting the president on hold?” Jayc asked. “Oh wait, please hold.” He tapped the button again. The woman’s face froze in an embarrassing undignified half formed expression. “This may be unwise,” Semaj suggested. “Maybe a snack first. I’m craving chocolate now,” Jayce said . He turned back to the screen reactivated it. “Madam President have you met my husband Semaj?” The woman balled her hand into fists. “The Vulcan yes. Come home Mr. Jayc.” “No. Say high to Semaj.” Jayc’s voice was theatrically friendly. “Come home for your marriage, now!” “Are you going back on hold Madam President.” “This is serious Mr. Jayc! You have responsibilities!” “I’m already married.” “Get divorced and come home immediately. That’s an executive order.” “No.” “You are coming home!” The woman stood up and slapped her palms on the table. “The government needs this.” “Call for Starfleet diplomacy corp. you aren’t making me marry for your political convenience.” “YES I CAN!” “Please hold,” Jayc said. I’m done with this.” The transmission opened to a Starfleet Lieutenant. “I see your credentials coming through now, Lirutenant Commander Jayc. How can I help you?” “Hello, my husband and I are being harassed by the Betazed government.” The you g man’s eyes widened. “How so?” “They are attempting to force me to nullify my marriage to my Vulcan husband and force me into a politically Marriage to settle a dispute between two Betazed houses. I refuse. I have documentation and recordings of messages sent to both of us.” The man made some notes. “Can you send me all of that. I’ll have someone review it immediately. This sounds like a sensitive topic.” Jayc and Semaj pulled out their trusty self stylised pads. Both uploaded their data.her you go. I just downloaded my last message with th Betazed President as well” “Uhhhh, ok. I’m going to take this to my commander now. You are on the Hades? We will reach. Out soon.” “Thank you Lieutenant,” Jayc said. The transmission cut. Jayc logged out of the station. Its systems went dark.. Then he looked at his husband. “Chocolate?” Semaj nodded We are what we repeatedly do. My bad. Mission: Homecoming Day: 2 Stardate: 2446.10.17 (Sol III, Starfleet Medical HQ, Main Atrium, CmdSgtMjr (rtd) Sara Keats and SSgt Rosalynd Keats, 0932) (Flashback) A few days later, Rosalynd walked carefully around the atrium of Fleet Medical HQ, the grace of her gait had vastly improved, but she still had a nurse hover nearby, much to both of their chagrin. She spied a familiar flash of auburn hair, a similar colour to her own, but faded slightly by age. She waved off the nurse attending, who only took a few steps back for discretion and followed Rosalyn anyway. Sitting down she waved down a waitress and ordered a fruit juice to the approving nod of nurse. “I can’t go back…can I.” It was both question and statement, fear and prophecy. “No.” Sara said, resting her hands on her daughters. “But it was something that you had to realise yourself.” She sipped her own drink. “I’m sorry about before. Truly.” Rosalynd waved off the apology. “You were right. If I were to go back to the corps it would be for the wrong reasons, as you said, I’ll get people injured or worse, just because of my avarice.” “Wisdom comes to us all, Oh light of my darkness, blessing of my loins.” Rosalynd looked at her mother and chuckled. “Gross.” “Twenty-seven hours I was in labour with you, that gives me an awful lot of right to pass on my trauma.” Sara winked playfully. “Where does it leave me?” Rosalynd said. “Like I said, you owe me for twenty-seven hours of pain.” “I meant with…” Rosalynd sighed. “My career. Where do I go?” Sara nodded, “You don’t need a badge to have a code, to have honour. Do anything that you want, take time and find…you.” “I loved wearing the uniform though, it fit me, and I fitted it.” Sara leaned over and pulled a PADD out of her bag and handed it over. “In that case, try reading this.” She was all too aware of how clumsy the sentence was, she sounded like a bad holosales commercial. “Officer Candidate Programme?” Rosalynd said, puzzled. “Where did you get this?” “Admiral Bracken.” She saw Rosalynd’s expression of confusion. “Aimee is a very old friend. Put me back together when I was injured. T4 to T8 spinal rebuild. She and I were talking a week or so ago.” Sara said with shrug. “She said she’d put a good word in if you wanted, told her that you wouldn’t want her to if it’s what you decided.” “You know me too well, Oracle most high.” Roz read through the details on the PADD. “So…I go through this, and I can gain commission into the Fleet? How long?” “Couple of years.” Sara nodded. “Eighteen months if you pull your finger out and don’t daydream. Going well, you could gain commission at Lieutenant junior grade given your experience. A lot of the basics you’ll have covered, Tactical analysis you’d walk, bunch of stuff you’ll have to cram, but you’re a clever girl. Big part will be that you’d need more courses to extend your medical knowledge beyond what you’ve done, but even that would be doable.” Rosalynd nodded. “I’ll look into it, look at the timescales and what have you.” She closed the PADD, then leaned forward, resting her head on her mothers shoulder. Sara responded by wrapping her arms around her daughter. “No rush decisions, but don’t put off a decision that could be the best one that you ever took.” (Reply none) (Posted by Mark) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
