She was very pale and the bug eyed nipping machine. She carried in her arms was now wearing a muzzle. The creatures legs flopped as she walked. Obviously it tired itself out trying to get the muzzle off. His eyes followed her as she almost stumbled through the airlock. He had failed. She was to much of a Mc Taggard to allow bygones to be bygones. Still this was probably the last time he would see her. It was very rare for the Illuminar and Exeter crews. To be together for any length of time like this. He heard someone approach behind him.In a quick glance he saw it was an old friend. “ Hello Paul. How fares ye?” He asked ( Reply , Sleeford) “ Ooh yer know me. Trying to make up for past mistakes. I suppose you heard about my little tussle with the wee beasties of the Illuminar” Stan said ( Reply , Sleeford) “ My cousin and her wee nipping machine. You never trained me how to fight chihuahuas.” Stan replied ( Reply , Sleeford) “ Nay. It was all a misunderstanding. I was trying to tell her that just because our families. Are locked in some ancient feud. We as Starfleet Officers should rise above it. Sadly the wee one mistook me for a danger. To his mistress and went for my shoe. Luckily I did nee have Lillian with me. The Ferengi would still be sponging. It’s remains off their walls.” He said ( Reply , Sleeford) “ Yer kidding. She’s calling him after me. I wonder why?........hey what’s with the laughing? By the way I’m glad your up and around. That was a brutal end to the mission. It’s a shame you won’t be in security. Gonna miss you.” Stan said (Reply , Sleeford ) ( Posted by:- Norman 🐼 ) (Deep Space Nine- Promenade ––MCPO – Intelligence Analyst – Rebecca Faust - 0930) Rebecca looked out of the Promenade's large view port at the new ship she had been assigned to. It was called the USS Starfire and it was roughly half the size of the Exeter but as she knew its smaller more compact size did not mean that she did not have teeth. She had a vague idea about where they were going but as this was now being run mostly by Starfleet Intelligence who guarded their knowledge even more than a stubborn Vulcan there was no way of knowing for sure. ~I guess I will find out what`s going on when everyone else dose~ She paused to look herself in the reflection and scrutinized what she was. As a Master Chief Petty Officer there were standards and expectations to be upheld. ~Probably going to have a crew of babies again. I hope there is going to be a good COB on board as they are going to need a lot of hand holding~ She paused giving herself a mild rebuke. The Exeter had left Mars with green crew and they had, had a full year to get ready for it. She gave a mental shudder at the memory of arriving on the Mystique from Trill and seeing how young everyone was. It had made her feel older then her 35 years. She gave her reflection a last once going over to make sure that everything was where it should be and then turned and headed for her new ship. ~Good enough. Can`t let the newbies think that the Chiefs are going soft~ (Reply any) (Posted by Robbie) (Deep Space 9 - Sickbay - ACOUNS ACMO LT JG Ariel Trei - 10.00) She entered Sickbay after having some breakfast on the ship. She saw Penny lying on a bio bed looking scared and showing effects of the night before. She approached the bed with caution holding a PADD in her hand and a medical tricorder. She scanned Penny to determine if she was still experiencing nausia. The scan said emesis is still a good possibility so she stopped a safe distance from the bed. "Ms McTaggart. I am Ariel Trei LT JG ACOUNS ACMO on the Illuminar. It has come to my attention that you had a rough night. Let's start with what you remember of the events of the night and what you were feeling at the time." (Reply Penny) (Posted by Edward) ( Deep Space Nine - Promenade- Upper level - aCOO Ensign (sg) Paul Sleeford 10:15) Walking aimlessly around the upper promenade after his session is sickbay, Paul was at a loss, he was officially medically off duty due to his leg, however he was bored, there was only so much sitting on a couch you could do before your brains trickled out your ears and over the floor. Spying a familiar figure leaning over the barrier watching the people going about their business, Paul approached from behind. Coughing loudly caused Stan More to turn sharply round. Smiling Paul walked to stand beside him and lent on the barrier. “ Hello Paul. How fares ye?” "So so Stan, to be honest I'm bored and you, what brings you here?" “ Ooh yer know me. Trying to make up for past mistakes. I suppose you heard about my little tussle with the wee beasties of the Illuminar” Stan said Faiening ignorance Paul turned to Stan, "tussle?, no, what happened?" “ My cousin and her wee nipping machine. You never trained me how to fight chihuahuas.” Stan replied Laughing Paul shook his head, "Well I find a boot on their ribs works well, not that we meet many 'wee nippin machines' So why did it bite you? and are you going to press charges?" “ Nay. It’s remains off their walls.” He said Pausing Paul looked at Stan's cousin as she walked along the promenade, the thing under her arm. "I spoke to her last night regarding the incident, figured that she wouldn't know about my move. Are you aware she named the thing after you." The look on Stans face was a picture as he digested the information that his cousin had named the dog after him, trying and failing notto laugh out loud Paul waved off the question. “ Yer kidding. She’s calling him after me. I wonder why?........hey what’s with the laughing? By the way I’m glad your up and around. That was a brutal end to the mission. It’s a shame you won’t be in security. Gonna miss you.” Stan said Shaking his head and wiping his eyes Paul looked across at Stan. "I'm moving departments, not moving ships. Only now I get to control your holodeck time. " Laughing more Paul took a deep breath, "I'll be honest Stan I'm scared ridged about this, I mean we all did the rotation of departments in year one at the academy, but that seemed so long ago. Did they think she’d set her tiny little dog onto somebody? What physical harm could a Chihuahua do to a foot encased in a shoe? “ My little wee doggy looked so upset at being left alone. So I took him to see DS9 as a wee treat. With all the noise and strangers he got a little naughty.” She said ( Reply , Trei) “ Ay it just happened that the person he attacked. Was my cousin. Who just happened to be a member of the Exeter security team. My wee doggie got confused. “ Penny said ( Reply , Trei ) “ I forgot to ask for synthahol. I dinna think Quark sold the real stuff. Och I will know next time. Believe me.That maybe why I was shouting…….Och my poor heed……..” Penny said ( Reply , Trei ) “ Weekly visits. I think that would be acceptable.” She replied. ( Reply , Trei ) ( Posted by:- Norman 🐨) (Deep Space 9 - Sickbay - ACOUNS ACMO LT JG Ariel Trei - 10.35) She listened to Penny's story of the night before. She was not concerned with the dog but was concerned with her relationship with her cousin. That needed to be resolved so Penny can have a stable emotional response to the situation . "Yes real alcohol can hit you hard. That hasn't affected be much since my Klingon side can handle quite a bit of alcohol. That is not my concern. My concern is with your relationship with your cousin. You need to have a stable emotional response. You need to be well adjusted to unpleasant events or memories. Tell me of your relationship with your cousin. I can help you deal with what is bothering you." (Reply Penny) (Posted by Edward) (Deep Space 9 - Sickbay - Sec Ens. Penny McTaggart - 10:36 ) Penny listened to Trei and thought about her answer carefully. Everyone seemed to have the wrong idea about her. She had not gone to Quarks to start a fight. It was all just a stupid stupid mistake. The wee one had acted one his own. She never set him on Stan. But it did look that way to everyone. Then again maybe the wee one picked up on Penny’s hidden feelings? “ I saw him at the academy. But until yesterday I had no knowledge he was my cousin.” She replied ( Reply , Trei) “ He was this silent quiet guy. Who never spoke with anyone especially us lassies. Very shy and gave us all these odd looks. It was a little creepy to be honest.” She said. “ Then we graduated.I thought no more of him until yesterday.” ( Reply , Trei) “ Maybe subconsciously but I never meant for the wee one to attack him. I was very drunk. My Grandmother filled my heed with all these silly wee thoughts. Which due to me being tipsy. He may have picked out on. Then saw Stan as a danger.” Penny mused. “ That’s why he attacked.” ( Reply , Trei ) “ I just want to go back to the Illuminar shower and have a good hearty breakfast. Our replicators do a fine bowl porridge oats.” Penny explained ( Reply , Trei) ( Posted by:- Norman 🐨) (Deep Space 9 - Sickbay - ACOUNS ACMO LT JG Ariel Trei - 10.40) She listened to Penny's story and thought about her answer. She thought Penny's actions were justifiable but being drunk is not an excuse. Penny will have to deal with her emotions better in the future. She responded to Penny. "I understand you didn't go to pick a fight but your inhibitions made one . You need to control your emotions. I know that is easier said than done. My Klingon side comes out from time to time. I find going to the gym hitting bags helps me with my anger issues. I haven't told anybody yet but I am preparing for the Rite of Ascension. I would like you to attend. It is most likely to be held when we get back to Mars but it may be after the next mission. We can talk once a week. Schedule with the receptionist. I will leave you to relax. See you soon." She left Sickbay to leave Penny to relax. (Reply Penny iyw) (Posted by Edward) (Deep Space Nine - Promenade - OPS Officer, Ensign SG Santiago Rodriguez Trujillo and Shuttle Maintenance Officer, Ensign SG Ista Tiar - 11:00) Santiago loved people watching. It was a hopping place, the market area of DS9. Lots of people to watch. Though one caught his eye. A Trill officer from the Exeter. He had seen her around, she worked in the shuttle bay. But they hadn’t spoken before, but he was bored, and people watching was more fun with a friend. So quietly and politely he approached her. “Buenas tardes, I do not believe we have had the pleasure of meeting.” he said in a thick spanish accent, “Santiago Rodriguez Trujillo, Exeter ops officer, how do you do?” Isra had been wandering the shops on DS9, not really looking for anything in particular, just wandering when a voice roused her and she looked up, and smiled slightly. “No I don’t believe we have. Isra Tiar, Exeter flight maintenance. I was just browsing the shops. How about you?” “Ummm, I guess you could call it a little bit, of, como se dice, ah yes window shopping?” Isra nodded. “Yes, window shopping” “Oh, what am I looking for, nadie in particular, I mean nada, nothing, nothing in particular.” Santiago giggled to himself. “I am not really looking for anything specific myself. Just taking a break and getting some downtime and relaxation.” She looked around her. “Want company? We can window shop together.” “Well ok, but I’m not sure you and I are shopping for the same things.” Santiago couldn’t contain his laughter. “Sorry, I find myself hilarious.” Isra laughed, “You’ll never know unless we shop together.” “So Isra, Iiiiiiisrrrrrrrra. That’s fun to say. Tell me about yourself. Who are you in your corazon?” She shook her head and laughed. “Is my name that fun to say? “I’m going to let you lead the way. I am just window shopping. Not looking for anything in particular. As to who I am … guess that is to be determined.” “IIIIIIIIISRRRRRRAAAA, oh IIIIIIISRRRAAA,” Santiago said in a sing song voice. “So cryptic. Who I am is yet to be determined. But don’t you know, you are the one writing your own story.” Isra laughed and shook her head. “My story is one of starships and space I suppose.” “So tell me, miss Isra, who do you want to be?” Isra motioned. “Lead on, while I tell you who I want to be.” She fell into step beside him as she continued. “I wished to become a pilot. I wanted to pilot anything that flew. It didn’t matter if it was a lowly shuttle, a worker bee, or a starship.” She paused in her story and looked around the promenade. “Looking for something in particular?” Isra shrugged “Not really sure what I am looking for. I … could use a new dress I suppose.” “Because if you see something you like, you know, we can go into the shop. It’s ok.” She smiled slightly “For those off duty functions we have a tendency to have to attend.” “Though I get the sense that your story does not end with you flying.” Isra shook her head. “No that was just a start but even that won’t ever happen. I haven’t finished my training to fly. All I do is fiddle around ‘under the hood’ on the shuttles and anything else they allow me to.” Her voice taking on a tone of sadness. “It’s not hard to finish. I could teach, or perhaps Lieutenant Williams would. He taught me to fly on Mars.” A smile crossed her face briefly. “Maybe, I hate to bother him though.” she knew she was making excuses and turned her attention to the window before her, hoping the subject would change. “Plus he’s your boss so he should want you to grow professionally.” “I am sure he does, ….. “ her voice quieter now. “But I am not sure I am ..” letting her words trail off. “Not sure what?” Santiago stopped walkings. “Isra, que te pasa? I mean, whats wrong?” Isra took a deep great and turned towards Santiago. “I’m afraid, ..” she bit her lip before continuing “I know what I want, what I have wanted since I was small. But ….. “ she closed her eyes against the tears welling up “ I lost my mentor, my best friend to a crash. I ….. Don’t want to be responsible for others lives. “ She knew indirectly she was caring for those pilots who took those shuttles and fighters she worked on, but piloting anything larger than a shuttle scared her. The image of the wreckage, the bodies had been hard for her to get over, even enough to do the job she now is so good at. “Well, have you thought about talking about that with a counselor?” Isra shrugged “I have. Long ago.” she paused and looked up into his face. “I thought I was past all this. I’m sorry.” “Rumor has it we have a new head counselor, she’s part betazoid, part caitian. She looks betazoid, except she has cat ears and a tail. Kind of cool if you ask me.” “I will … maybe … get with her.” Her words said with some reluctance. She frowned and tapped her toe on the metal plating beneath their feet. “I’m sorry I am such a downer on our little shopping trip.” she motioned to the window. “Mind if I stop in here and check out this dress?” really hoping he’d get the hint she wanted to change the subject. “Well, I don’t think I will look good in a dress, but sure.” Isra laughed, and shook her head. “Not for you.” she looked him up and down and shook her head. “Well …… maybe.” she grabbed his hand. Come on, …” “Ummm, ok.” Santiago let himself get dragged into the store. This was definitely not how he planned to spend his day, but sometimes, sometimes it's the things you do for others that fills the day with joy, and Santiago knew that no matter what he would try and make the most of it. (reply none) (posted by Will and Kathleen) (USS Exeter - Deck 3-Merek/ Shara quarters 2O/CEO Lieutenant Keira Merek& CTO/3O Lieutenant Ravok- 1342) Ravok walked into the quarters carrying Rayna with several bags on his back. Filled with belongings of his newly acquired daughter. Venus came charging over happily wagging her tail. " Down! Sit ! " He commanded too the dog. Venus say down. He knelt down Rayna reached out for Venus, the dog began sniffing her hand. " Doggie" Rayna said smiling. " Her name is Venus" Ravok told her. " Vinis" Rayna said as she pet the dog. " No sweetheart." He said laughing. " VEE NUS" He enunciated to her. " Venus" she said clearly. Ravok just stared at her and couldn't help but smile. " That's right , she's a good girl. " Venus leaned her head forward and began sniffing the stuffed Llama tucked in Rayna's arm. Ravok pointed at Venus quickly " Raed'aeu snnta'jhiy iebhe!" He said harshly. Venus backed up and away from them. Rayna looked at Ravok with a look of confusion and began mumbling gibberish and laughing. He looked at her and laughed with her. " I told her dont touch in Romulan." Rayna tilted her head with an inquisitive look streaking across her face as one over eyebrows raised. " Romalan?" " No Romulan. Its a… language . It's what we are. We are Romulan. " he explained pointing his finger back and forth between her and him. " I'm Rayna" She said, tapping herself on the chest. He shook his head and smiled. " Yes you are , but we are also Romulan." He said pointing to her ear and back to his. Keira had heard them enter, from their bedroom. The woosh of the door, Venus and her thundering across the carpeted deck. Ravok's careful explanations. Funny that she could face a rampaging beast or the finest of warriors without blinking, but to face this little girl the woman had to marshall her courage. Keira stepped out from the doorway. " Ravok looked up and across the room to Keira. " Rayna this is…" he paused for a moment not knowing what to say. Every part of him wished this child was from him and her. The word mom would mean so much to this little girl whose mother gave up on her, but he knew that this was a delicate situation for all of them. Thankfully Rayna was used to a revolving cast of characters in her life. With her aunt working security on DS9 Rayna was watched by various people as her aunt tried to maintain her career. "My name is Keira. I live with your dad." Keira said, trying to explain. She didn't know if she understood romantic relationships or the word, girlfriend, so she started with the simplest truth. Rayna looked at her and squinted her eyes. " Romu..lan" she remarked pointing at her own ear while looking at Keira's ears. "Yes, yes I am." Keira said with a grin. He stood up and picked up Rayna's bags. " She's really observant. Doesn't have the best communication skills but picks up on small details quickly. Kora said I was the same way as a child." "Observant? I can work with that," Keira said smiling. "So glad I put away those knives." " Me too." Ravok laughed. "Rayna," Keira said, kneeling down closer to her level. "Do you want to see your room?" Rayna looked back to Ravok. " Go ahead." He said. "It's right this way," the blonde said, offering the girl her hand to lead her. Rayna stepped slowly to Keira and took her hand. Ravok followed behind them but kept a distance. The short trip across the living area lead them to what was previously the guest bedroom. As they approached the door opened automatically. It revealed all the things from her old room that Ravok couldn't physically carry. Things like a bed and a toy chest, and a dresser which made the built in one redundant. Rayna let go of Keira's hand and ran to her bed stopping at its side and began rubbing her hands on the bedding. She turned around and looked at both of them. "Do you like it?" Keira asked. Rayna said nothing, she just offered a smile and threw her stuffed Llama on the bed. "We can have her pick a color at some point. Starship grey isn't every kid's favorite color." " The wall panels in my room as a child were different colors, not out of artistry but because my room was originally a storage room for backup food processing units. Kora saw that the room was made safer for me by using spare pieces of the outer hull to cover some exposed plasma conduits. Half of my room was solid duranium. " He laughed. "Does she have a favorite color?" Keira asked. ~We should know that, right?~ " Let's ask her. " Ravok suggested as he stepped into the room. " Rayna , what is your favorite color?" She looked at him " Color ?" " Yes color, blue ,yellow, pink , green...colors" He responded, giving her examples. She shook her head. " No " She didn't understand the question. Keira picked up a PADD on the coffee table and keyed in a sequence for a test screen which had a series of colors across the top half showing all primary and secondary colors of light, white and black. "Maybe this will work." Rayna followed Keira with her eyes. "Rayna," Keira started. "Do you like any of these colors?" She worked her way across the common visible spectrum starting with red and working her way to violet saying each color in turn as she pointed to it. " Color. " she said as she touched the color orange on the screen. " That one" She proclaimed. "Orange? Khoey?" {Northern dialect Romulan for orange} Keira asked with a smile. "Tomorrow your room will be orange." " Ok" she said jumping onto the bed. "I'm assuming her human family hadn't taught her Rihannsu, any harm in starting?" " No, her aunt didn't teach her. Romulans were a sore subject in that family. " Ravok said, looking a the floor. "Between the two of us we could probably teach her quite a few languages, though we can keep it as simple as you'd like." " It would be great if she learned. There is so much that is left unsaid." Said Ravok "Unfortunately I have to get back to work, I have much to finish up, I rearranged some of my schedule so I could meet you here at this time. I should be back in time for dinner though." " We'll be here." She gave her boyfriend a parting kiss and waved bye to Rayna before she walked out the door. Rayna waved bye to Keira as she walked away. When Keira left Ravok looked at Rayna. " Well it's you and me." ( reply none needed) (Posted by Robert and Todd) (Deep Space Nine - Promenade, Upper Level, Look out - Exeter CO, Lt. Commander Trip Williams and Illuminar CO, Lt. Commander Sekal - 20:20) Trip had finally been able to break away from his ready room and make his way onto the station proper. As he walked on the upper levels of the promenade he couldn’t help but be taken in by the movement and business of the people. Everyone going about their daily lives, focused on what their next task was, or what item to buy, or whether or not to stop in for a round of dabo or see if the holosuite was open. Living their lives unaware of all the threats the Galaxy had in store. Not knowing that less than a week prior a ship had set out with a weapon so devastating it would have re-terraformed Bajor and wiped out all life on the planet. Nor could they know, as that matter was now classified. That the Cults none as the Prophet’s Fire was defeated, with its leader dead and lieutenants and other members captured, that information could be shared. That their leader had been possessed by a Pah Wraith and they had actually constructed a working genesis device and modified its matrix into a workable torpedo with the intention of reshaping Bajor in their own image. Well, that was knowledge that Starfleet was keen on keeping under wraps. Though with Dr. Fave Itel in custody and willing to talk and spill the beans on as much as possible in exchange for a not as harsh sentence, Starfleet HQ would be able to keep themselves busy for awhile figuring out how those plans that had been classified two centuries ago made its way into the hands of a terrorist cult. Trip found a nice railing over a walkway and began to look down. He enjoyed people watching, imagining what they were thinking, where they were going. Seeing people from all walks of life, from all over the Galaxy. The diversity of cultures, of ideas, of people, he found it fascinating. The Vulcan had left Quark's bar after speaking with Doctor Methor and continued mingling with the other beings on the Promenade. The melting pot of cultures was stimulating. Spending his formative years on the fringe of his mother's diplomatic party had been an unparalleled opportunity for educating him in the nuances of inter-cultural exchange. While his arrival and subsequent rise on Mars had offered opportunities to rub elbows with representatives of other species it had been nothing like the compact pressure cooker of this space station near the fringe of Federation influence. The veridian mineral water had been consumed some time ago and he was considering another when he spotted the CO of the Exeter on an upper walkway so made his way to a staircase. Himself and Trip Williams had had too little interaction during the frenzied labor of rekindling operations on Mars followed by getting Republic and Exeter refit along with the construction of Illuminar. He motioned to the human/betazoid Commander as he drew near. "Commander Williams it has been too long since we have spoken". He noted as he came close enough to speak without shouting.. “Oh Commander Sekal, good to see you,” Trip said with a smile extending his hand in the customary earth greeting of a handshake. Sekal had overcome the taboo nature of physical touch somewhat due to the demands command placed on its superior officers. There were many instances where the gesture was expected though he maintained his mental shielding rigidly in such instances. He returned the handshake firmly. “And please, unless this is a business call, you can call me Trip.” Sekal shook his head. "The business nature of the mission has concluded satisfactorily…" his pause was short, "...Trip. This would be considered a social call rather." He turned and placed his hands on the railing as he looked down at the promenade. "The crews appear to be quite enthusiastic about the opportunity for liberty." “So, I hear y’all have been quite busy of late, what with everything that has been going on down on Bajor. I bet y’all are raring to go for some R&R.” Trip contemplated giving the Vulcan captain of the Illuminar a friendly slap on the shoulder, but at the last minute he decided against it. He wasn’t sure how well received that particular human interaction would be. Sekal nodded. "The situation was unexpectedly convoluted though its roots in religious fervor was expected." He looked back to Trip. "Your own mission cannot have been simple judging from the preliminary reports I have received. My condolences for those who were lost." “Thank you, I appreciate it. Yeah, unfortunately there is gonna be a lot of bureaucratic red tape, and HQ is going to be dealing with this for awhile. But we made it back, and people seem to be in better spirits. I think this time on Deep Space Nine will be good for morale.” He nodded. "Our duties on Mars kept us too busy for social interaction which is regrettable. I thought to use this as an opportunity to 'catch up' as it were. The odds of Illuminar and Exeter crossing paths again in the near future are miniscule." “Most likely, the Galaxy is rather large. I don’t know where you’re headed next, but they want us headed to Cardassia, just a little check in. Say hello. More diplomatic than anything else. Then I think after that, who knows. Could be headed to the Beta Quadrant, could remain in the Alpha Quadrant, could go back to Gamma. It all depends on those higher up the food chain.” "Our orders are to return to Mars for upgrades which is unusual for a new ship however augmentations to offensive and defensive systems which I set the goals for have been reached. I believe this will be the last such refit for some time however." “I’m gonna make my way to Quark’s in a bit, I got enough credit to open a tab for the Exeter crew, though hopefully they don’t go all out. But I think a bit of down time and free booze might be good for morale. More than anything just being somewhere other than the ship I think will be welcomed.” Sekal nodded. "Being on edge and maintaining alertness for extended duration exacts a psychological toll I have noticed. Leaves and liberty are necessary for a crew to maintain their energy and lower stress levels." “You should join us, I’ll buy ya a drink, though I don’t quite know what vulcans partake of.” "Your offer is appreciated though unnecessary. I would extend the same to you. The Veridian mineral water Quark has on stock has proven to be adequate. I will join you." Trip nodded and then sighed, “Before any reverie though, ummm, don’t want to be awkward or anything, but uh, how’s my sister doing?” The Vulcan cocked his head slightly. "Not well, I will tell you off the record that her sleep is impaired and it has affected her performance though she attempts to cover for it. The counseling staff is concerned and Counselor Ravenstone has sought my permission to bring in a specialist. While she has not confided in me completely I agreed. I am hoping that downtime at Mars will speed her recovery." “I’m saddened to hear that, but yes, I hope downtime will be good. Sy is brilliant, beyond capable, but sensitive. I don’t know if its a yin and yang thing, or a boy and girl thing, but she was always the more sensitive of the two of us. But deep down she’s a fighter, and I know In my heart of hearts that she will be the best damn first officer you will ever have.” "I have no doubts as to her abilities." Sekal nodded. "She is a complement to my command team and knowledgeable of the ship. Should the necessity arise I am certain she will be more than capable of commanding her. Her intelligence and experience gained during the testing trials will be invaluable." He fell into step with Trip as they moved to the staircase. "Has the Exeter's performance met expectations? We have not had the opportunity to make use of the phaser and deflector arrays on Illuminar which is fortunate though the tests were successful." “The systems we have used were satisfactory. The Dark Matter phaser array is particularly devastating. And the Quantum Slipstream Drive is working without issue, as long as our Engineering team can make the calculations in time. So Prolonged usage is probably not ideal at the moment. What about your, ummm, what was it, planetary landing systems?” The Vulcan shrugged. "The planetary landing was performed flawlessly. That was not unexpected however as the technology for that class of vessel was already well laid. The modifications to it were minor. There was an issue with the flux capacitor series for the warp drive that was installed but a facility on Bajor has received my specifications and is fabricating an upgrade for use on the return trip. I plan on testing our access to a subspace tributary as we leave the Bajoran system. If successful we will have essentially a parallel system to the quantum slipstream drive." “It sounds like it. Makes travel a bit quicker. Which will hopefully be a benefit to Starfleet as we try and increase our presence back in the Galaxy. Making new friends, mending fences with old ones. Hopefully not making any new enemies,” Trip said with a laugh. "Indeed. The renewal of relations with Andoria was needed and reestablishing relations with other former Federation worlds is a priority. The greatest concern I have at the moment is what footing we will be on with the Klingon Empire when we begin pushing outward once more. I anticipate that we will have access to the ships from the Vulcan Defense Fleet by that time. My father is confident that an agreement will be reached soon." “Kind of odd though, being a captain so soon. I mean, I know on Mars we had a lot of responsibility, but Remae was always right there to cover our asses if we screwed up. Now, it’s like the safety net is off and we have to grow up in a hurry. Or maybe that’s just my Human and Betazoid emotions. Kind of a fun cocktail of emotions that mix is. Either way, one mission down, a lifetime to go.” "You are correct in your assessment. I myself still have a lot to learn. StarFleet command training is exhaustive but every encounter is likely to have unexpected deviations which will force growth. It is our response to those situations which will determine the direction we take." “I got to say, on my part, sorry for not getting to know you better back on Mars. It’s a big base, and work kept me pretty busy and on alert, and I know the same was probably for you. But I could have made a more intentional effort to at least pop in from time to time.” The Vulcan nodded. "The same could be said from my perspective no doubt. The burden of work we undertook to aid the fleet in its resuscitation left little time for pleasantries. Which is the reason I had hoped to speak with you here on the station." “I’m glad you sought me out.” "What is your preferred libation?" Sekal removed the handful of gold pressed latinum from his pocket that he had gotten from the credits he had cashed in as they entered Quark's. "More of the mineral water for me and whatever Co….Trip desires." He said as the Ferengi turned to face them. “I’ll take a bourbon, on the rocks.” Trip said with a smile. “I’d also like to start a tab for Lt. Commander Trip Williams, you can send the bill to the USS Exeter and I’ll get sorted. Any crewmember of the Exeter is drinking on that tab. They should have some identification on them, but if a couple freeloaders get a free drink, that’s fine too.” The Ferengi nodded and returned with their drinks. Taking his drink in hand, Trip turned to Sekal. “Well, should we toast something?” "To our crews and ships." Sekal raised his glass. "Long may they serve." “And may the great bird of the galaxy watch over them both.” Trip said raising his glass and clinking it with that of Sekals. The future of the Federation, at least for now, was particularly bright. In one step he left hold life of being a highly respected and competent independent officer in the Rangers to being a Tactual Officer on a Starship. He knew that this demotion and move to a starship was supposed to be the Vice-Admiral`s Aids idea of punishment. In one respect she was right, as being a Lucusian he came from a forest world and not being able to feel real ground under his feet and seeing a real sky was horrible but not unbearable. His kind had begun to work out coping strategies ever since they went into space. ~I really hope the person who is looking after the arboretum dose not mind me visiting often~ As he entered the antechamber outside the docking port he was confronted by a couple of security officers, one was holding a PADD. Ire Williams, SPC Ensign Greta Smith & SPC Ensign Jack Roberts - 0900) Sitting outside the office, Greta tapped her fingers on her knees. She knew that Trip had asked them to do this but she had honestly forgotten. Knowing that they were solid as a couple, she wasn't worried. More impatient to get it over with. Ire watched as Greta tapped her fingers on her knee and smiled. “Any dark secrets you want to tell me before we start? Like you're scared of small fuzzy animals?” "I come from the land of the haggis. Small furry animals don't bother me." She replied with a smile. “What you mean the small creatures with legs one side shorter than the other so they fall over when they are not on a hill?” He smiled back "What about you? Anything you Wanna tell me?" “Well now that you mention it. I don't like small spaces, large spaces, light, dark, being too hot, too cold, ow and zombie teddies.” "Zombie teddies? Really?" “Yes my Aunty got me one for halloween and it scared me half to death I had nightmares for weeks. I was five at the time though. I wanted to bring it to the Academy as a mascot but my roommate decided one night after too much to drink that it was looking at him funny and he set it on fire.” "Okay, I changed my mind." He paused. “About what?” "Anyone That is scared of teddy bears…. " she burst out laughing. “Hay not now. I am a little bit older and hopefully wiser to know that a child's toy will not come alive and stab me to death in the middle of the night.” "You are Crazy, ire Williams. " “Well I guess this session with the head shrink will tell us exactly how much.” "If you are crazy, I must be for agreeing to marry you. " He looked up as the door opened and a man with brown hair and a powerful build stood at the entrance. ~Must be him~ Ire thought. “Ensign Roberts?” “Have a seat please,” Jack said as he brought the two into his office. Jonathan Marcus “Jack” Roberts was a gruff looking man, whose path to being a counselor was a little out of the norm. Having served as a Starfleet Marine for years, he switched gears after achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. An injury forced him out of active duty, he instead went to to the Academy and studied counseling, as a way to pay forward the counsenlors who helped him and also stay in the fleet. He waited for the two to get settled. Ire sat down in one of the two offered chairs and nodded. “Thank you for seeing us Ensign Roberts.” Greta nodded, still a little unsure of why this was necessary. She sat next to ire and regarded the man in front of them. “Now then, please, call me Jack.” “Jack.” Ire replied in response. "Nice to meet you, Jack." “Now then, tell me, how’d y'all meet.” Ire glanced at Greta, gave a slight smile and paused for a moment. ~This is going to sound bad no matter how I say this~ Ire thought “Um I launched us both out into space from an exploding fighter.” "That's… well it is true but we had met before that. Although being thrown into space does create a bond between people." She added with a slight smile. “For a bit of context. I was the fighters pilot and Greta was the flight officer. It was our first flight together and we had been ordered to attack in Wing strength a group of pirates. During the battle we got boarded and had to escape a disintegrating fighter.” ~and now he is going to think that we are only together because of that shared trauma.~ she thought to herself. “They say that psychologically, one has a hard time distinguishing the emotions, the adrenaline from fear with that of attraction.Which is why they say the first date should be a horror movie.” Jack smiled, “Now then tell me how has that attraction progressed from the initial incident. How soon after did you start dating?” "Well, I became a squadron leader. Got my own team. A lot happened in between that. There was shore leave on Trill and Ire…. Well he saved one of the other crew from a potentially bad incident. But… he … did something that wasn't becoming of Starfleet officer to save her. I went to his quarters, shouted at him a lot and he… well he kissed me. The next morning, we woke up together…" Ire cringed at the memory of what happened on Trill and the following discussion with Trip. “Not my finest moment. The unbecoming part not the getting together part.” "I was going to say…" Greta quipped, rubbing her hand on his knee. “I see, so do you find his lack of impulse control attractive?” Raising an eyebrow, Greta leant forward, "why do you ask?: “I ask, because well, Fleet life is rough, and kills relationships, and sometimes people act irresponsibly in the line of duty. Does Ire being irresponsible turn you on? Your first moment of attraction is one of adrenaline introducing terror. Do you need controversy to spur the romance?” "Excuse me! Ire is a good man. He's kind, caring and… what does it matter what turns me on about him?" Ire placed a reassuring hand on hers. “Yes we did have an unconventional start to our relationship but it's not what defines our relationship. I have the fortune to meet a strong independant, intelligent, caring woman that I want to spend the rest of my life with. Does that fact that being in the fleet makes it easier? No of course not. We are on a starship going through the most dangerous and hostile medium known to sentient beings but we are making it work. Would it be safer if we had never left earth and lived on a farm somewhere of course it would be but here is where we are together.” He paused realising that he had become slightly ranty. Greta smiled at him, "He's right. Sure, the adrenaline is what started our relationship but it doesn't define it. Ire supports me, he is there for me when I need to cry, when I need to talk.. he tells me when I am being an idiot too which is often. Mostly, he is the other half of me. What I lack, he excels in. " “I see and how do you both handle the pressure of both being in Starfleet, and the pressures that come with the job. Have either of you shut down because the other was in danger? Greta's eyes dropped a little as she closed them. "Yes." “Tell me Greta, what did you do, how did you handle it, what was the situation?” "I …. Ire, along with others on the crew were kidnapped. I was on a security team, inspecting an asteroid when the call came through. I broke. I screamed, dropped and … punched the ground breaking my hand." Greta kept her gaze down, subconsciously flexing her fingers. “Did anything else happen, did you freeze up, were lives put in danger, was your life put in danger because of an inability to handle the stress or trauma?” "Honestly, probably. Knowing that now I wouldn't react the same way. Every Time I think about that moment, it hurts me that I couldn't keep it together. " “But do you think you won't, or do you know you won’t? Because those are two different things. I know that question seems hard, but there is a reason why Starfleet relationships are hard. Part of these sessions are to analyze and see what are the areas of weakness or strength, before marriage. Because harder still than both of you being in harm's way, is having to work in close proximity to an ex-spouse. Ire same question, how would you react if Greta was shot in the line of duty?” Ire paused before answering. “I don't know. The professional part of me would compartmentalise it. Move it to one side so that I would deal with it after the situation was dealt with. This is not the first time we have both been in danger together….” ~Wolf 359 for one~ “.....but then there would be the other part which by the prophets would go and get her out of harm's way. I guess it would depend on what would be happening at the time. Saving her would always be the option I would want to go for but not everything is what we would want.” He said sadly. Taking his hand, Greta squeezed it gently. Smiling softly, she looked at Jack, "we're not perfect. None of us are but I know that I love this man and I love being in Starfleet. " He smiled sadly back trying to feel reassured but worrying that he was not. “I guess this is the risk of being together that one of use will put the life of the other over the mission, their crewmates or the ship.” " Greta you mentioned that you love Ire and love being in Starfleet. What would you do if you had to choose one or the other? Would you give up Starfleet for Ire? And Ire same question?” “Yes I would.” Ire said without hesitation. "Yes." “Now before you say that question is unfair, the reality is at some point in your careers you might be assigned to different duty stations or different ships. Sure you could petition to move together but it might not happen. So what would happen if Ire was, say, named FSXO on Mars, but Greta had to stay on the Exeter?” “It would not be easy. Being that far apart would be hard but we would not be the first couple to have a long distance relationship.” "My mom served. My dad didn't. They raised my brother and I. Many military and Starfleet people raise families. Would it be easy? No. Would we make it work? Heck yes." “These are just things to think about it, to talk about, as the wedding gets closer. Things you need to talk about together. Things you should talk about when you head home. Anyways, before we end our session a few rapid fire questions. Okay?” Ire nodded. "Go for it." “Kids yes or no, if yes how many?” “Yes and as many as we are comfortable in having.” Ire responded. "Yes, at least 2." Jack wrote down some notes. ~Make sure they have more of a consensus, family size is usually an area of contention in new marriages.~ “Morning person or night owl?” Ire smiled slightly. “Morning person.” "Morning person. So long as there is coffee." Jack nodded and wrote down some notes. “Who should handle the bulk of the domestic duties?” “I would say that we share them equality but that`s from my perspective.” He looked over at Greta. "Equally done." “Greta, does it bother you than Ire’s career seems to be moving faster? Seems to be more promising?” "I made the choice to move to the department I did to give him the chance to be the best he can be. So, in answer to your question, no." “Ire, could you give the hard order to Greta if it was needed to save lives?” “I don`t know.” he said honestly. “I just hope I never have to.” "Depends what you mean by hard order I suppose really. " Ire looked at Greta. “I guess from the way he is asking whether I could send you to your death to save others.” He looked back to Jack. “And if that was your question then my answer stands.” Jack scribbled some notes. “Look, I’m not gonna kid you, Starfleet Marriages are hard, harder still when both are officers. The separation rate is…. Well… its not great. But with pre-marital counseling, your chance of success increases exponentially. Which is why you need to take this seriously. I’m not gonna tell you that you can’t get married, that’s not my job, but if you take this seriously, at the end of it, you will either know that it’s best not to upset the status quo, or you will know that you have the best chances possible to succeed.” Ire nodded “Now there are some areas that have me concerned, mostly Greta, due to your rash snapping on important questions and the episode from earlier. But those are these that can be worked through talking to a counselor, preferably not me if I am going to be working you on those sessions. But you also need to talk to each other. About what separation due to assignment might mean, and what the other being placed in danger feels like, and how you cope. Because these are very likely scenarios.” "I know I snapped. I am sorry about that. It's a problem I have had before but I have spoken to a counsellor and am still going to those sessions. I know I need that and I recognize that." “Now then, I am sending you some questionnaires for you to fill out and return to me. Fill them out separately, and do not share the answer with the other. I’ll analyze the data and we’ll go over them together at our next session. Any questions?” “No questions Jack.” "No. I don't think there is anything." “Alright, well get those questionnaires to me and I’ll see you in a month.” (Reply none) (posted by Will, Robbie, Jackie) (USS Exeter – Tactical Department – Sec/Tac - Ensign – Arbor - 0902) Arbor entered the tactical department at a steady walk. It gave him the opportunity to get a rough idea of the department layout as he found the Chief Tactical Officer`s office. He was intrigued by what he was and tapped the admittance button on the wall outside the CTO office. The door slid open and he entered as he moved over to stand in front of the CTOs desk. “Ensign Arbor reporting as orders sir.” (Reply Ravok) (Reply Ravok, any) (Posted by Robbie) USS Exeter - Deck 13 - Ops office - aCOO - Ensign (sg) Paul Sleeford 09:25) Sitting in the Ops office Sleeford felt a little strange, the move up seven decks had been the strangest one, he'd spent months since the launch on deck twenty in the second security office. The door chime interrupted his thoughts, looking up he yelled out. "Enter" Watching as an unknown ensign walked across the short distance to the desk, Sleeford placed the PADD he'd been reading on the desk. Folding his hands on the desk he waited. “Ensign Wallis reporting as ordered Sir.” Pointing to the second chair Sleeford spoke again, "Please sit. So Ensign Wallis, what can I do for you?" (Reply Wallis) Talking the PADD Sleeford read the orders. Looking at the young an opposite him. "So Oliver tell me about yourself, why are you here?" (Reply Wallis) Sitting there listening, Sleeford mentally sifted through the names in the department, with Wallis he now had five Ensigns including himself, along with two CPOs. A nice little department with enough people to cover the three shifts and a competent QM, he knew in the coming days he'd have to do several meet and greets to get to know them all. He had expected to be on Deep Space Nine for a good few months before going back to Mars Orbital but this morning he got a communication that he was transferred to the Exeter with immediate effect to be assigned to its Operations Department. He had frowned and read the communication twice and then checked its authenticity with the computer to make sure that it was not some on playing a prank. It turned out to be legitimate, so he had hurriedly backed his few belongings and headed for the ship. He thanked a crewman for showing him where the Chief Operations Officer`s office was. He pressed the door chime, waited for it to opened before he entered and walked over to the desk. “Ensign Wallis reporting as ordered Sir.” (Reply Sleeford) (Reply Sleeford, any) (Posted by Robbie) (USS Exeter - Deck 13 - Ops office - aCOO - Ensign (sg) Paul Sleeford 09:30) Sitting in the Ops office Sleeford felt a little strange, the move up seven decks had been the strangest one, he'd spent months since the launch on deck twenty in the second security office. I joined Starfleet to see the galaxy or at least get out of the solar system but unfortunately my skills were deemed to be too important for me to leave. My parents work as controllers at the civilian orbital traffic control center and a guess it must have rubbed off on me as when I graduated I was sent to Mars Orbital traffic control center to coordinate all spacefaring traffic in the system. If I do say so myself I am very good at my job. I was lucky to get sent to DS9 for an exchange program to compare how they worked with our own.” He paused for a moment. “As for why I am here. I was only informed a few hours ago. I assumed it was due to personal rotation sir.” "So any preference to which shift you best?" “No Sir. (Reply any) (Posted by Robbie) (USS Exeter - Nine and Dine - FO Lt(sg) Ailynn Bracken and Bar Manager Caity DuBois 0940) Although she had sighed deeply at the summons, and had outwardly professed the pointlessness of it all, Ailynn had accepted, and welcomed the appointment with Physiotherapy. She’d read in deepest details, the files that the Exeter’s new Physio had written, and actually found a scrupulously minute attention to detail, one that impressed Ailynn even at her most critical. She’d also had a long long conversation with Trip about her appointment, but was assured by him that the girl that had been ‘the Daemon of Riker High’ wasn’t the person that had come aboard. She was dressed, once more in her gym kit, yoga pants and a fitted top, an outfit that she’d found herself wearing more whilst she’d been on shore leave. Reaching the bar she took a seat at her habitual bar stool, and waiting politely to be served, caught Caity’s eye. Smiling to herself, Caity turned to her customer and said, "well it is true what they say. A shower and a change of clothes do work wonders. You look better." Smiling warmly, Ailynn tilted her head at the compliment. “I feel infinitely better...and thank you.” "What brings you here to my humble establishment?" “A few things actually. Firstly, I owe you an apology.” Raising an eyebrow, Caity looked at her confused, "There are a few Ensigns that owe me an apology but you? You don't have anything to apologise for." “No I do…” She shrugged. “Last time I was in, I was rude and dismissive...I didn’t eat all the sandwich either. I’m sorry” Ailynn stretched slightly, a knot of muscle in her back troubling her. "Well, that's fine. My sandwiches aren't that special. So stop apologising. You okay there?" She asked, frowning a little Ailynn stretched in her chair. “Can I have a protein wheatgerm shake?” Caity nodded, ordered her drink from the kitchen and walked back, "Back giving you trouble? You need an ancient and famous Dubois family cure all." Ailynn sighed. “That sounds far more preferable. I have a physio appointment.” "I sense a but." “Do I seem like a ‘Yoga class girl?’ Ailynn laughed and rolled her eyes. "Is the answer to that going to get me fired?" Ailynn laughed. “Only if you tell my Doctor about my real alcohol intake…” "Well, the old family cure is simple. Hot bath, glass of wine and just relax. Sometimes people forget the simple things in life." “Wine glasses are so the wrong shape for drinking in the bath, good suggestion however. Thank you for the shake by the way.” "Anytime. My door is always open. Now, can I ask you something?" “Of course.” Ailynn shrugged. Drinking some of her shake. “Depending on the question you understand I may not be able to answer?” "Do you have any idea why the big cheese hasn't been in here?" “Honestly?” Ailynn shrugged. “I didn’t know that he hadn’t. He’s got a lot on at the moment, and perhaps prefers to unwind in his quarters with Ash and the dog. Or maybe he goes to the starlight lounge instead.” "Yeah, the posh bar. Figures being Captain he would prefer to relax in peace and quiet." “I wouldn’t take it personally. He’s not the type to shut anyone out. I’ve known him a long time.” Ailynn said, not sure if Caity was just asking, but Ailynn thought she’d smooth any ruffled feathers anyway "Well, tell him he is always welcome. What happens in the nine and dine, stays here. I also have a bottle of his favourite brandy stashed away. Just incase. " she replied with a smile. "I'll tell him." Ailynn answered with a warm smile. "So tell me. What do you do when you're not in here? Our paths never cross anywhere else." "I like to read so I spend a lot of time in my quarters. When I do relax, I have some programs I run on the holodeck." "Oh? What kind of programs?" "Hiking, sometimes I just load up a program I have of my favourite library from back home. I…. Well, my sister and I… we used to spend hours there, just reading." Caity replied, aware that there was a sadness to her voice. Ailynn looked at Caity, and noticed the subtle change in demeanour. Not knowing Caity at all beyond simple pleasantries, she deflected the conversation. "The library at high school was my most favourite place in the world." She smiled, the memories rushing back to her. "Libraries just have a magic about them." "I spent every free hour there, devouring book after book. My favourite was a long series of thick books, dunno if you've heard of it. 'The Delghashi Chronicles' a High Fantasy thing." "I've heard of it. Never got round to reading it. My favourite has to be anything by Tolkien. His mastery of language and the way he describes every little detail… it just puts you right along side every character. " "I'll put them on my list." She smiled "not that I get free time much." "Between being head honcho number 2 and I suspect the physio as well…" "The physio? I don't know how gossip has spread, but short version is that I was kidnapped on the asteroid base and after dealing with the cult, ended up at death's door back on that planet." "Oh… I am so sorry. Damn in put my foot in it again." Ailynn smiled, and shook her head. "Its all good. Yeah, so I need sessions of physical therapy to iron out my creases." "Hey, I get that. Being in this profession, you people at various stages in life. You will get there. " "I know, and although its quite a road. I'm on my way already. I'd better get to gym class though. Thanks again Caity." Smoking, Caity nodded, "Any time, Ma'am. " "Thanks for the chat, and the book recommendations. Catch you later." "You know where I'll be." As you're aware I'm taking over the Operations department. Apart from the basic primer in the first year of the academy, I have no idea." Sleeford greeted him. Ravok stepped forward and looked at the ops station constructed by the holodeck He turned to look at Sleeford. " What is this about ? " "I took the opportunity to create the fore part of the bridge, as you can see. I'd like you to run me through op's, the hows and whys" Ensign Sleeford said. Sleeford lost the smile, if the tactical panel went bang, then most likely the bridge had gone bang as well, so the ability to piggyback tactical from op’s would be redundant, it was nice to know the ability was there. (Reply none) (Posted by Mark (PC and SPC)) (Bajor - Kendra Province, Talimor Pond - Exeter CO, Lt. Commander Trip Williams, Exeter Dir R&SE, Ashyln Williams and Illuminar FO, Lt. SG Sienna Williams-Verin - 12:00) It was a beautiful day on the surface and Trip had been enjoying spending time with his sister, whom he loved and missed dearly. Their time was being cut short however, as soon Sienna would head for Mars and Trip would be headed towards Cardassia Prime. But they still had time and Trip fancied a picnic. At Sienna’s invitation they would be joined by his wife Ashlyn, for a fun family outing next to a beautiful pond situated near a tourist’s campground. Laying on the blanket looking up at the sky Trip smiled. “Nothing beats an open sky. Space is great, but something about laying on my back looking at the sky, it just speaks to me.” Crimson silk Sundress. Long black silk opera length gloves. Silk blend shawl in case of cool weather. Hair in pigtail braids and a large straw sunhat on multicoloured ribbons, tied at her throat, bouncing along behind her. Leather boots with no heel but silk stockings. Picnic basket full of things not from a replicator from the dutch chef of the Illuminar. The hum of the transporter as she solidified. ::Brat!:: She 'called' not seeing him but opening herself up enough to follow the sense of him. She had gotten more sleep in one setting, without drugs, than she had in 3. She looked better than she had the night before. Trip being close was good for her. Tomorrow she knew, when the Illuminar headed back to Mars, things would be rough again. But for now she was going to enjoy it. Something she had sensed the evening before bothered her a bit but she was not sure what it was. Just another vague feeling from when she had touched Trip without the gloves. A sea of grass, blowing in the wind. Ashlyn materialised a short distance away from where she was assured Trip was meeting Sienna. The first thing that Ash noticed after the warm Bajoran sun on her skin, was the gentle late summer's breeze. It was a gentle reminder of what she missed when she was on the Exeter. The breeze pulled at the flowing calf length cream summer dress. Although she wasn't cold, she was glad of the matching stole that she'd got wrapped around her shoulders, her lustrous, raven black hair flowing behind her. She was truly, truly radiant with happiness. "Sienna! She called out as she saw her sister-in-law. Holding her arms out she embraced the younger girl, giving her a gentle kiss on the cheek. "It's so lovely to see you." Sienna got a flash of something from the kiss but nothing concrete. "Hi." She spoke shyly, not sure how to treat Ash. She had not been the nicest to the woman due to Sy dealing with her own pain. “Y’all are finally here.” Trip said with a laugh as he sat up on the picnic blanket. “I’ve been waiting for forever.” Trip then chuckled. “Not really, I came early because I wanted some time with a real sky, just me, the sky, and my thoughts. Happy times.” "Well," Ashlyn leaned over and kissed her husband. "Now your peace has been shattered, because you get to sit back and listen to girl talk." She stuck her tongue out at him playfully. "Right Sienna?" Sy looked between them curiously, "Perhaps. I have not had much chance for girl talk." She felt like she was missing something obvious. “Good news, I packed lunch. Steak sandwiches from the Exeter’s Nine and Dine, no onions, because I love my sister,” Trip said with a wink. “Also got a few things of potato salad, and some fruit salad.” "Looks lovely. Trip, start unpacking, Sienna do you need a hand hun? That looks cumbersome." "I brought little things from the Illuminar's dutch chef. Finger foods and terran deserts mostly. There are these little tortes he makes with fruit atop. He has been practicing making finger foods ever since he heard about the possibility of a wedding. I swear if Alaya and Hammons were not play fighting with her staves each day, she would end up as plump as Dad's Christmas goose." “So how are we all doing this beautiful day?’ "I feel amazing. I'd almost forgotten how much I missed the Bajoran summers. Especially doing this with you guys. This is so delightful." Sy spoke carefully, trying to puzzle out the issue still. "I just want it all to be over. Not today mind you but all the rest of it. I want normal again. To be able to sleep through the night and not worry about the nightmares." Through the bare bits of skin of the sundress and the gloves the white scars of the knife wounds she had suffered from the Q showed. "So what are the two of you not telling me? I got a flash of something confusing yesterday from Trip and again…" her voice trailed off as she figured it out. "Oh my Goddess it isn't that he is having an affair, the other person is a child? Your pregnant!!!" Sy squealed and it was all one long word without pause. "How what, WHEN!!!" She cried out ignoring everything in her sheer, utter delight at the news. "Does Mom know?!" If Mom knew and didn't tell her, Sy was going to shred her. “Two months, we haven’t told mom or dad yet, or Miss Dale. We were keeping it secret until we hit 3 months. I actually found out before Ash, I sensed the kid. But when Ash and the other Bajorans on our crew were taken prisoner, and she had a bit of morning sickness, well, that’s when the CMO, who was there found out, and well, cat’s out of the bag.” "Bet you, dollars to donuts Mom already knows. She has better spies than fleet intel and she Always knows when something involving one of her kids happens. Doesn't have to be us, I'm including the fosters." She was thrilled. Sheer delight and it was leaking empathically so strong she bet Ash could sense it. Ashlyn had never really been around many empathy, the few that she had she didn't know well, but they had kept themselves shielded. Up until now, the times that she'd met Sienna she'd had no hint of any of the younger girl's emotions. Now though the delight was pouring out of her. It made Ashlyn even more deeply happy. “It’s a boy, we’re going to name him James Andrew Williams the fourth, but we’ll call him Drew. You’ll be his godmother of course.” "Absolutely. Also, and I really hate to say this but Trip, you two gotta file the papers for custody if something happens. You both know how easy it is for bad things to occur in space. And something bad is coming." Her dark eyes were earnest. "Please, please do this." She looked between them, still as happy at the news but more serious in tone. “We’ll have directives filed as soon as he’s born. We already have a joint will. Guess who get’s custody is more important than who gets my collection of B Horror movies.” Trip chuckled and then sighed. “Look, I wanted to tell you, but there is a complication. Do you remember my yeoman from the fighter squad? Girl our age, Ronnie Winters.” "Vaguely?" She asked, trying to remember and not placing her. “What I tell you is classified. She is apparently our daughter,” Trip said pointing to himself and Ash, “from what could have been the future, an alternate future timeline if you will. She only revealed it to us a few days ago when she realize that in this timeline, she’ll never be born. So I guess, yeah…that’s what I’ve really been trying to hide.” "Oh." Sy spoke softly. "Now that sounds like an interesting story. She should take some leave and go home. Meet the Clan." “Well given how closely she worked with me, she already is. But this is top secret stuff. Like went back in time to prevent an apocalypse stuff. We still don’t know what. So right now, at least in public we have to pretend there is nothing there. Which… I’m still trying to figure out that relationship. You know, I’m 23, she’s 23, Ash is 26, and Ronnie is our genetic daughter and my age. It’s all $%#@%$ up. Pardon the language. But you know, I don’t know. I guess, I’m ok with it. I dunno. I remember when the only thing I had to worry about was learning how to tie my shoe. I miss that.” Ashlyn laughed gently as she lifted off the lids of the salads and passed a plate each over to Trip and Sienna. “Thanks hun,” Trip said with a smile. Sy grinned. Being around Trip made her hungry. Being around Ash reminded her of Lynn. It was like the past and it was seductive. "Seems like we have more each week to worry about. But not today. The Ronnie issue is an odd one, but the more we live with it the more routine it'll become. Besides. Seven months and our lives change again." Ashlyn spooned on a couple of salads and some of the delicious looking things that Sienna had brought onto her plate. "Can you sense him Sienna? Want to say hi to your nephew?" "Not really right now. I am shielding pretty hard to block how bad the pain is since I do not want it echoing down to you from Trip. I would have to take the gloves off and touch you and I would sense a lot. Likely more than you would want me to. Do I want to say hi though? Absolutely. I do not know if he will hear me though I can try." Too much classified bs in Starfleet. Their family shouldn't be part of that. "I love him though I do not even know him yet." A brighter, real smile that lit up her eyes as she filled a plate with food. “Well, and he’s of course going to love his Auntie Sy.” Trip said as he looked up to the sky. “It kind of puts things in perspective you know. Mom and Dad, Miss Dale, Miss Aimee. They all tried to make the galaxy a better place for us, and unfortunately they didn’t get the chance. I want desperately to have Starfleet be that beacon of hope again, and now I know my reason why. Family. Not just Drew, not just, well I guess Ronnie, even though she’s grown, but the two of you, the fosters, Rissa. The bright new tomorrow.” "These family moments mean so much to me. Didn’t have one growing up, so being a part of yours Sienna is so important to me" Ashlyn said, in all honesty. "You and your family have taught me so much about what it feels like to be part of that kinship, even your Foster siblings, who although not blood, are no less family." “And yeah maybe dark things are on the horizon, but you know. I haven’t stopped thinking about that image you showed me last night sis, of mom and dad dancing in main engineering. It’s the little moments of hope and joy. Sy, I will treasure that vision, that memory of mom and dad dancing throughout the Exeter always. Thank you.” "Well, I guess that the heck of what Q put me through was worth it, maybe, for that one moment. I loved seeing it too, seeing and feeling the Dad I barely remember from our childhood." “There is always a silver lining sis, if you look for it. Always a bit of blue sky on the horizon.” She said nothing for there really was nothing more to say. Moments passed as the three ate their meal in happiness and fellowship. When it was over Trip found himself laying once more on the blanket staring up at the sky watching as the clouds go by. “I could stay here all day. I know I can’t, but I could.” Ashlyn finished off the sandwich, and the plate selected from the items that Sienna had brought. "These finger foods and tortes are amazing, Sienna" "There is going to be a wedding soon. One of our Counselors. Our chef has been cooking everything he can think of for it. Side benefit, we all get to eat it." "It's so lovely, just sitting here. Family, gentle summer breeze, we need to do this more often. You know, as family. Can you synchronise shore leaves? Is that a thing?" "Not easily but it can be done. With a little familial intervention. " A sly grin. “I think we know a few friendly Admirals,” Trip said with a laugh. “I’m gonna treasure today. Not gonna lie. And as for shore leave, well I’ll save up some days, Sy you can save up some days, and after Drew is born, we’ll head to Earth, that way you, me, Ash, Mom, Dad, Gramps, Grammy, and all the clan can meet the little dude. What do you say, sound like a plan?” Sy nodded, "Sounds good. And yeah, you are not the only one that will hold today dear." A slightly sad smile because the event was coming to an end and she had a bridge shift starting at 1600. "I really miss fishing. I know that sounds crazy since I never really enjoyed it before." A slight shrug as she laid down beside Trip. “We’ll have to go fishing then the next time we meet. Just you and me, and a cooler of beer, and other stuff for you.” Trip said with a laugh Trip then reached out and grabbed his sister’s hand as Ash also laid down beside him on the other side. He then reached out and grabbed hers as the trio laid in silence just taking in the beautiful sky. Trip was happy, just him and his girls. (reply none) (posted by Mel, Mark, and Will) USS Exeter - Personnel Quarters - Yeoman, Ensign SG Ashlee Helms and Dog (SG) Layla Williams -13:00) Ashlee didn’t mind being the captain’s yeoman. He was usually very fair, and the paperwork was light. Nor did she have to bring him coffee all the time. But there was one thing about her job that she just absolutely was driven nuts by. Dog sitting. “Oh Ensign Helms,” The captain would say to her. “Do you mind taking Layla out for a walk, might not be able to get off the bridge and Ash is at work.” “Oh Sure…” Ashlee said remembering all the times she wished she could have just rolled her eyes at the request. It’s not that Layla was a bad dog. It’s just that sometimes, sometimes she just was too much of a dog. ~Seriously, Cap is on a picnic and he couldn’t have brought the dog. No, it’s Ashlee to the rescue….again...Seriously….I mean she’s a good dog, but people should just get fish. I mean, she wrecked my bathroom….Ughh. Wait...why don’t I hear her?~ Ashlee got up of the couch and ran to her bedroom in time to see Layla’s but sticking out of her closet. “Layla!” Ashlee yelled as the dog then turned around and in her teeth was a red satin dress, Ashlee’s favorite dress, in her teeth, torn. “No, no, no, no, no. Come on Layla! I thought we were friends!” ~Damn dog.~ Layla heard thing's voice as she backed out of the wardrobe, dress in mouth. "Rrrnff?" The problem was, Layla considered, was that people didn't listen as well as dogs did. “That was my favorite dress. My mother gave it to me for my birthday two years ago. How could you. It’s the kind of red that makes me shine. I mean...uggh, dig why do you hate me?” "Hhmnnn" she whined, looking sorry. ~grey isn't your colour Thingy. You should wear darker grey.~ Ashlee took the dress from Layal and looked at it, it was completely ruined, the holes made by the teeth were in such a place not even the best seamstress could fix. Ashlee just looked at Layla and sighed. It was weird, it was like Layla only misbehaved when Ashlee was watching her. Defeated Ashlee returned to the living room and began to sob. “Stupid dog, first she floods my bathroom and living room. And now she destroys my favorite dress. It was handmade, not replicated.” She just sat cureled up in a ball on the couch trying her best not to cry. Layla could smell Thingy's sadness, and she knew she'd been a bad dog. She couldn't even pin this one on squeaky rabbit. Cross looking lady in grey that had fixed the broken water bowl had taken it away. She wasn't sure what to do so she went to have a nibble at her biscuits to make her feel better. ~biscuits! Clever Layla.~ she thought. She ran over to her bowl, and picked up a couple of dog biscuits carefully in her mouth. Then she slowly padded over and placed them in Thingy's lap. Ashlee began to laugh. "Hmnnnn" she looked sorry at Thingy. Ashlee took the biscuits and placed them on the table and then patter her lap for Layla to jump up and lay her head there. Layla wagged her tail and hopped up. Rested her head on her lap and looked up with sorrowful black eyes. “I know you’re just a dog, you don’t understand things, and you probably act out, because well, you miss your owners, I just wish you wouldn’t have eaten that dress.” "Hnrnff" layla whined again. “My mom gave it to me, its the one thing I have that I know people notice me when I wear it. I’m not just a glorified assistant, or Plain Ashlee, or How’s it going Helmsdawg. I’m a bombshell, and I no longer feel invisible. It’s like that dress was the only way I was ever noticed.” Thingy smelled like very sad, which was a shame, happy thingy smelled nice. She yawned a wide open mouth yawn, then snuggled into Thingy again. Her eyes still watching. “What am I saying, you’re a dog, you have no idea what I’m saying.” Layla sighed and sat up, and licked Thingy's neck, her cold nose pressing against her ear. “As annoying and aggravating as you are Layla. You are still pretty sweet. I’ll just need to do a better job of doggy proofing my closet.” There was the tiniest changes in scent. Layla curled up after turning round and felt Thingy's gifted scratchy fingers on her head. Ashlee then began scratching Layla’s head, her tears drying up. Maybe they could be friends after all. (Reply none) (Posted by Will and Mark(spcs)) (USS Exeter - Personnel Quarters - Yeoman, Ensign SG Thea Helms and Dir R&SE Ashlyn Williams -15:00) Thea sighed as she opened the door and Ash entered. “Hey Mrs. Williams,” she said as he motioned for Ash to come in, “How was your day trip?” “It was nice, thank you. It’s Ashlyn or just Ash, please.” “Ok, I just wanted to give you the appropriate deference given you are the Captain’s wife. Ash. Ash. Ash. Got it down in my head.” Ashlyn smiled, “His wife, not the Captain himself. I’m just a civvie. I’m sorry that we couldn’t take Layla. She’s not old enough to have all the standard jabs to go planetside. Which is a shame because she’d have loved the park.” “Yeah… I think she could use the exercise.” Thea looked down at her feet. “I’ve seen that look before.” Ashlyn covered her eyes. “Tell me what happened.” “She got into my closet, found my favorite dress, and umm, well,” Thea then pointed to the destroyed dress on the coffee table. “Made it a snack.” Ashlyn felt her heart sink, and tears well up in her eyes. “Thea I’m so sorry. I can’t imagine how upset you are. I know how much you loved that dress.” “It’s ok, it happens. Layla meant nothing by it. I think she acts out because she thinks you’re not coming back.” She looked at Layla, who was sitting in the corner, and sighed deeply, dabbing her eyes. “You’re possibly right. Perhaps we need to look at training for her, you know...anxiety, withdrawal.” Ashlyn picked up the dress, and looked at the holes. “Leave it with me.” She said. “No it's fine, really, it's just a thing. Things can be replaced.” “And that’s what it will be. Replaced. I promise.” “Honestly, I think Layla is so used to Mars and the freedom that allowed, she had more room to move. Trip could take her to the hangar or you could take her to work. It’s just adjusting to life on a Starship. I think it’s hard for a dog, let alone a sentient creature.” Ashlyn nodded. “You’re right. It took me an age to get used to it, so madam over there must feel awfully confused.” “I think so. Squeaky Bunny happened while you were kidnapped and Trip slept in the Ready Room. It makes sense. I think.” "It does." She squeezed Thea's hand. "And since Ailynn got Layla squeaky rabbit, so she can go and find you a new dress." Ashlyn winked. “Can you do that?” "Of course I can do that, she isn't my boss. She's family, so she'll do what I ask of her while on shore leave and like it." “You really don’t have to.” "Besides. She needs to get off ship, apart from Quarks two days ago shes not left and I worry shes moping about." “I mean that’s fine if you want to get her out and about, but you really dont have to go through too much trouble on my account.” "Honey...its decided, and don't put yourself down." “Really, it’s ok. I’m just a lowly peon, and its just a dress. I’ll be fine.” "Its not 'just a dress it's something that I know you treasure, and take great care of, and it's been ruined because my daft dog chewed it because I wasn't about. I'd feel terrible. Honestly it's one dress, and I'm sending Ailynn, who knows little to nothing about dresses, so you may just get the first thing that she sees on the first stall." She laughed gently. Thea began laughing. “I could end up with a ball gown, or I could end up with a skirt so mini that I’d never be able to wear it in polite company.” Ashlyn laughed. "Don't sell yourself short. I'm sure you have the legs for it" “Oh I’m not worried about the length of my legs.” She laughed. “I’m worried about whether the skirt would even get to my legs.” She giggled a bit. "That, is a very good point. Look. I'd better go bully Ailynn." She hugged Thea, and took the dress. "Thank you, you're so good to keep having her. I know she adores you. Her tail always wags when she knows its time to go with you." “Well, sometimes she has a funny way of showing it.” Thea giggled. Ashlyn smiled once more "Layla. Heel." Walking toward the door Ashlyn waved gently at Thea, then walked down the corridor toward her own quarters, Layla happily in tow. (Bajoran Orbit – CFO – Lieutenant (J.G.) – Ire Williams -1600) He glanced at the green tales, tales on his suit heads up display. =^= Okay everyone. We are coming up on the jump point. Everyone make sure that their beckons are active, and we will beam you out if you get into trouble=^= Ire comm clicked his acknowledgement and grinned to himself. Orbital Drop Recertification was the reason why he and the group of others were in the aft compartment of the cargo shuttle. As a combat pilot he needed on a regular basis to recertify in different aspects of space combat and orbital drops were one of them. They would simulate the situation of an ejected pilot to enter the atmosphere of a planet. =^=Jump in two minutes=^= He had been lucky that there was a recertification being run while was on DS9. It was possible to do it on the holodeck but there was nothing better than actually doing it for real. He had done this over earth and mars but the opportunity to drop onto Bajor was too good to miss. =^=Jump in 10=^= He watched as the rear hatch of the cargo shuttle opened and he looked at the beautiful view of Bajor spinning slowly below him. =^=Jump in two, one, jump=^= He and the person to his left stepped onto the lowered ramp and launched themselves through the force field and into space. He quickly fired the suits small maneuvering thrusters to orientate himself into the right position for him to enter the atmosphere. His HUD beeped at him as the gravity of Bajor took hold and began to pull him down. ~Well there is no going back now~ He double checked his entry sequence as well the heat resistance part of the suit was where they were supposed to be. He was speeding up as well as heating up as his HUDs altimeter spooled down faster and faster. There was really nothing he could do but hope that the computer had put him on the correct path as he began to streak across the sky like a fiery comet. Any deviation and he would turn into a fiery fire ball before the transporters could get him to safety. He had heard of the stories of one person on their orbital drop had flipped over and had gone through the atmosphere butt first. He was never sure whether it was just folklore, or it really happened buy it was a good cautionary tale about re-entry. He gave a mental sigh of relief as he passed through the fiery inferno that was re-entry and watched as Bajor spread beneath him as far as he could see. If was beautiful and he totally understood why. The lush planes spread beneath him and he remembered walking through them when he had visited there as a child as well as exploring the other countenance of the plant. If he had been back on earth or on Mars he would have to have gone onto the escape and evasion element of his recertification but luckily, he was on Bajor so just the drop was needed. He needed to open his shoot at 3000 meters which at the velocity he was going it would be like getting hit by a runabout. ~Nearly, nearly, nearly, now~ He gritted his teeth in anticipation of the maneuver to come and hit the shoot release button on his suit. The shoot blossomed above him as he was yanked up. He grunted in pain as his body being slammed from horizontal to vertical. He looked around him to see other shoots also open and grinned to himself as he drifted down slowly. He pulled on his control lines and began a lazy turn towards the landing zone. As he glided slower he began a series of maneuvers to bleed of speed. His feet touched the ground at a stead walking pace as he hit the shoot retraction button and the shoot spooled its self-back into its container on his back. ~Well that was a lot of fun~ (Reply None) (Posted by Robbie) (reply none) (posted by Mark and Will) (Deep Space 9 - Upper Promenade - FO Lt(sg) Ailynn Bracken -17:00) Ailynn entered the promenade, wearing her gym kit, but wore her rank pips at her right collar; an air of irritation flowing around her. What crowds there were parted easily for her as she strode across the floor, at her considerable determined pace. Many times back on Mars, back in the Medical Facility that she had Project Managed the rebuilding of, she’d paced down those long corridors, the only time you ran was if you were on crash team, if you heard running, you stepped aside. Running as a whole meant there was an emergency. Emergencies upset patients, so a brisk walking pace was okay. “You two…” She turned her head toward two very young and green looking Ensign(jg)’s obviously fresh out of the Academy, and in awe of what was around them. “Ma’am?” “A dress...Where do I get one?” The slightly taller girl, auburn haired, though still a good eight inches shorter than Ailynn was pointed nervously at the nearby dress stall; the intense Lieutenant(sg) that had swamped them with her mere presence. Ailynn looked, then turned back, an eyebrow raised precisely one eighth of an inch. “Really? Look…” She continued. “Imagine that this dress is your favourite thing in the entire universe, imagine it can’t be replaced, it literally means more to you than anything. You with me?” Redhead nodded. “Okay great. My dog has eaten it.” Redhead gasped in horror. “My dress?” “Where do I get a replacement. Not a replacement..but a REPLACEMENT.” Redhead nodded. And pointed the other way. They then walked off slowly. A few steps away redhead turned to her friend. “I can’t believe her dog ate my dress, what a cow she didn’t apologise.” MInutes later, her mood even worse. She saw a group of young ladies outside of the door. ~I don’t have time for this nonsense.~ She turned to one girl, obviously the ring leader. “I mean this place is okay right? But If I had the time I’d look for something more vintage retro, like...innit?” “Oh...My….You know it girl…” “Hey…” Ailynn leaned forward, “there was this stall down the way...well rar retro. I’d go, but it’d be like I was wearing my sisters clothes yeah? But on you it’d look dope yo!.” The girls all squealed like hyenas, and all departed, leaving the doorway empty. Ailynn shook her head irritably, as she walked in. “I’m surrounded by Morons.” The dress shop was small, but wonders were contained therein. Slowly she stepped across the shop, her attention flowing from one side of the room to the other, her eyes taking in each tiny detail of every dress that they fell on. “Stop.” The voice was accented. Ailynn turned to the source of the voice, and again raised an eyebrow. “Stand Straight girl don’t slouch.” “I’M NOT SL...oOWWW!” The dressmaker had pushed firmly onto the right side of her hip, something clicked. “You’re posture is terrible, but you have potential. Now speak.” Aware that a lot of conversation seemed to be happening in the old womans head, she filled in the blanks, or rather failed to. “The dress isn’t for me...It’s for...My aunts dog ate her dogsitters most prized possession.” “And you thought zis voz a Gavage problem?” “I don’t have time for this cr…” “Sounds like silly girl should lock her wardrobe, and lower her dress standards.” Ailynn snapped. “DON’T YOU BLOODY DARE. She is a lovely kind and gentle girl, who had one thing she adored.” Her nostrils flared with annoyance. SHe stepped toward the annoying dressmaker. “I like you. Too many people come in ‘ere and tell me ‘ow great I am.” the old woman straightened slightly, “But I know z’at. You come in ‘ere and shassay across my floor, those legs challenging me to dress z’em, and you aren’t interested, you don’t fawn to old Gavage. You stare her in ze eye and wear your beauty and defiance like a shield.” Ailynn was derailed. “I’m...flattered, but I’m nothing special here. I’m just the messenger.” “Just ze messeng…” she swore in a language that Ailynn didn’t know, but the intonation was clear. “Child. You give me v’one hour, you get two dresses, v’one for your friend, I assume ze bag you ‘old is vot naaughty doggy ate.” Ailynn nodded, and passed over the remnants of Helm’s dress. I see vy she likes it. Iz vell made.” She walked over to a rail, tensed her eyes, and picked a dress out seemingly at random. “In Zis...she vill be a goddess.” She passed the dress over to an assistant who had appeared, who them carried it reverently, to the counter, where it was wrapped in an ice white box, carefully folded in sections of pure satin, and the lid carefully placed over, sarcophagus-like. “Now…” Madame Gavage turned to Ailynn. “Vee discuss price.” “How much. I can pay...largely whatever. Transferable ferenghi assets or latinum.” “Don’t be vulgar. Ze dress is a piece of material, given value by a name. You see somzing like zis on z’at stall, is eet different? Yes? No? “you price is you work for me, one hour of your life and you get z’at dress, your dress, and shoes. You need heels, I sink...at least s’ree inch.” “Three inch? I’m six two…!” THe next hour progressed surprisingly fast for Ailynn, and she strode out of the shop carrying five boxes. One dress plus shoes for Helms, two very different dresses for herself. Her first stop would be her room, where she would leave her own things, then, picking up Ashlyn, she would speak to Ashlee. (Reply Helms, later as inferred IYW) (Posted by Mark) (USS Exeter - Personal Quarters - FO Lt(sg) Ailynn Bracken, Dir R&SE Ashlynn Williams -1830) Ailynn passed the box containing the dress over to Ashlyn. “You got one; Ailynn” She was pulled into a hug by Ashlyn. “Thank you so much. I just couldn’t leave the dog alone any more.” “She’s a menace, but we all love her.” Ailynn agreed. “Now, let's take this to Helms, I want to see the look on her face. They left the room, still chatting. “A Gavage:? How did you get her to do this? I know of the woman, she can be difficult.” “I told her that I wasn’t bothered by any of it. She seemed pleased that I wasn’t fawning over her. She then asked me to model a couple of things for her. I agreed and she made good with this. Shoes too.” She lifted the box that she was carrying. A short while later they reached Helms’ quarters, Ailynn hit the chime for Ashlyn. (USS Exeter - Helms’ Personal Quarters - FO Lt(sg) Ailynn Bracken, Dir R&SE Ashlynn Williams and Yeoman Thea Helms -1830) “Enter,” Thea said as into her quarters came the First Officer and the Captain’s wife. ~Oh shit. What did I do?~ “Hey, look, I swear, I didn’t do anything to Layla, I promise. After she ripped my dress we just cuddled. I promise. Or if this is about his coffee order from this morning, I promise, I had no idea it was salt instead of sugar.” Ashlyn smiled warmly. "Thea sweetie relax. It's okay. I know you wouldn't hurt Layla, and she's been awful of late." She squeezed Thea's hand with one of hers that she'd managed to free up. "Oh, I just thought, you know with both of you here, I thought I was in trouble." Thea let out a sigh of relief. "I think Layla acts out when she thinks you guys have left her behind. Shorter than an hour she's great. Any longer and she acts out." Ailynn sighed. "I can't believe she managed to flush that rabbit. I'd have loved to see the Engineers face. It is regarding the dress though." "Oh,"she said, "it's ok. I don't blame her or you Ash. It happens, it's ok. I'll be fine." Ashlyn smiled gently once more, she was genuinely fond of the young Yoeman. "Ssh. Something that you adored was destroyed, but beyond that you've been an absolute rock that Trip and I have been able to utterly trust and depend on." She passed the box over carefully. "This is for you, I hope it goes some way to both apologise for all those times you were put out and to say thank you." "What is it?" Thea asked inquisitively. "It's a pizza." Ailynn said, getting a scowl from Ashlyn. "I mean, I like pizza." "Open it!" Ailynn and Ashlyn said in unison. Thea opened the box and her eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. "Wow this is so beautiful." Ailynn passed over the second box. "Matching shoes too." "But this is too much. I mean this must have cost a lot of latinum. You really shouldn't have." Ashlyn shrugged. "Nonsense. I wanted to, besides," she cast an eye at Ailynn, "the cost is for me to worry about. You like?" "I absolutely love it. Wow. I just wow!" "You deserve it." Ailynn said. "Now..." She gave Thea a hug. "We'll leave you alone so you can try it on, then you go and hit the club, knock em dead kid." "I just. I can't." Thea began crying tears of joy. "Thank you so much.". Ailynn caught Ashlyn's gaze and nudged her head toward the door, silently ushering Ashlyn out. Ashlyn smiled, rested her hand on Ailynn’s shoulder briefly, and then left. Ailynn carefully led Helms to the small couch where she sat down next to her. “Hey...shush now.” She said gently. “You know, some girls can cry really gracefully...sadly you’re not one of them, you have the wrong complexion.” Ailynn teased gently. "Oh shut up." Thea said smiling through the tears. “No...shush.” Ailynn silenced the other girl gently. “Here’s the thing. You are going to wear this, and you are going to love it, because it’s a gift from Ash to you. You mentioned it’s cost...well, as the lady herself said, the cost is subjective, it’s what it means that denotes it’s true value; and to Ashlyn, and Trip, although he may never find out and understand any of this, you are valued to them, very deeply. You drop everything you’re doing with no hesitation or complaint. And here’s the thing…” Ailynn picked a tissue and dabbed at Thea’s eyes gently. “All those tiny things, that each of us do, the tiny silly things that mean nothing to us but mean the world to the recipient? Well they all multiply out, and the galaxy is a better place. It’s been earned Thea...own it.” Ailynn paused a moment, and then winked, “That’s a direct order Ensign Helms.” (Reply none) (Posted by Mark and Will(SPC)) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Mission: Crossover Day: 4 Stardate: 2445.09.24 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< (Deep Space Nine - Promenade, Coffee Shop - Exeter CO, Lt. Commander Trip Williams and Illuminar FO, Lt. SG Sienna Williams-Verin - 0800) The Promenade was alive with the hustle and bustle of people getting ready for work. Trip was trying to get in once last chat with his sister before they went their separate ways, at least for the time being. “Here’s the drink you ordered. I hope they made it just the way you like it.” Trip said as he handed Sienna her drink. He then sat down and placed his cappuccino on the table in front of him. She took the drink that one of the Illuminar crew referred to as 'The Monstrosity ' and sipped it critically. "Needs more cream and sugar." It was never right unless she made it...or Trip did. Not even Lynn had gotten the drink correct. "Only about 90 minutes until we leave. I am so tired." She had grabbed bridge shifts to let the crew get as much time as possible on base. "But I can catch a nap before Beta shift. And you, brother mine?" She resisted the urge to touch him. Though she really wanted to peel off the silk and do so. “We’ve got another day. Leave for Cardassia tomorrow. Got to get my dress uniform dry cleaned, just in case. Need to do some paperwork, but then I might go down to Bajor again. Do some hiking. I don’t know. I enjoy the down time, but I kind of miss having some get up and go you know, like, I guess I’m just looking forward to the next adventure.” "Always have been an adrenaline junkie." A soft sigh, thinking about the past. He didn't seem to understand her. To be fair, she did not seem to understand herself, how could she expect him to? “You’re gonna stop by home right?” The question seemed to come out of nowhere That was a hard question. "I WANT to but something big is going to happen when I get to Mars and my plans are going to go sideways. I dreamed it, and the part with Q, well that is going to be worse." She shrugged a bit. “Yeah,” He said, trying to empathize with her plight, but it was foreign to him. He had no concept of what dealing with Q was like or would be like, he had only heard the stories, no true way of understanding it. But he would try his best to provide some semblance of comfort to his sister. “Though if you can make it, I mean, whatever happens, it will be good to be around the people who love and care for you the most.” She shook her head, letting him talk as she always did. She would not pick a fight. She would not ruin this. “As much as I love you, and I truly love you from here to the furthest reaches of the Delta Quadrant, I can’t compete with how much Mom and Dad love you, love us. It would stretch from here, in an infinite line, to the far reaches of the universe and right into the next one.” "I know you love me. I know they do too. Just perspective is different now." She looked down at the cup. Love was supposedly infinite, right? It certainly did not feel that way to Sy. She admitted it, she was lonely. In a crowd, she would always be apart. “So, the monstrosity, so how off were they. I tried explaining it right, but they looked at me like I was crazy. I told them to never argue with results.” "About 85% right. No one else gets it at 100% like you." She sighed. "Just feeling down I guess." Couldn't he feel how much pain she was in? She was too sensitive. "Hanging with you is super nice. But being close to her hurts. Like rubbing sunburned skin with sandpaper? No, worse. But I will be able to get some sleep once there is some distance.” She had been barricading her pain for so long maybe he couldn't tell. "Do you still regret being Betazoid?" “No, but, it doesn’t, it doesn’t affect me the way it does you. Something with the genetics, I think I favor dad a little bit more, I don’t know something with the Y chromosome I guess. But also, I have my blockers on really high, maybe that’s it. The implant helping regulate my, umm, illness, boosted my abilities, and so I’ve just really been focusing on trying to keep stuff out, that maybe I’m just not reading you like I normally do. Eventually it will normalize once the nanites have had more time in my system. But I promise, I promise I’m still here.” he said pointing at her temple. “And you are still here.” He placed his hand over his heart. She shook her head the way Mom did and sipped her drink. “Honestly, after….after Rae died, with the shock of all that, I contemplated treatment that would have removed my empathic abilities completely. But, if I did, I would lose something special, something that made me, me. Not just my abilities, but my connection to you. So I don’t regret being Betazoid, I don’t regret being your brother. But I’m just, I’ve always felt more human, but that doesn’t mean I’m not proud to be betazoid.” "One of the things I am beginning to realize is that there are so few Betazoid twins for a reason. Sibling bond has nothing on a twin bond. But burning out your abilities would have been painful, and the meds that block psi abilities are not much fun either." She looked down again speaking from personal experience, "I had a nightmare a few days ago. Terror, despair on a scale that defies reason. I think it is just me dealing with how my life is changing. For the better. Mars is going to be hard, but I just need to get there." Sy checked her chronometer again. "Just, because I can't be late. You have not told me a good Layla adventure in a bit?" “Do you know what she did yesterday? While we were having our picnic, she was being watched by my yeoman and got into her closet and destroyed her favorite dress. Like just ate it.” “Oh no! I’ve been trying to decipher the experiments that were being done on the animals on Mars base. I think the dogs and cats were part of an experiment to increase their intelligence. One of the chief scientists had read an old terran novel that talked about cats that had the ability to roam small scout ships and find problems. They were apparently highly valuable. I’m not sure that he succeeded on the scale he wanted, but a number of the cats we have on the Illuminar are certainly more intelligent than a normal animal. I think Layla was part of that experiment too. Have you tried to read her empathically? I know Mom can do it?” “No, I umm, I can’t read animals. I’m lucky when I able to read humans.” Trip chuckled. Not quite sure why, but I might need to pull up an obedience training holodeck program.” Trip took a sip from his cappuccino. ~Needs some sugar.~ He put some brown sugar in his mug and began swirling it. “Oh and like two days ago, I had her in the ready room with me, I had some lunch delivered while I was writing my report. Steak sandwich. I went to the washroom to wash my hands before eating. I ended up replicating a grilled cheese sandwich and some french fries because Layla, that mischievous devil, got a hold of my lunch while I was washing my hands.” Trip laughed. Sy giggled in delight at Layla’s antics. “If she ever has puppies… I’d like one?” Sy spoke quietly. “Deal.” Trip said with a smile. “Do you want me to walk with you to the Illuminar.” Sy nodded, standing and taking the arm her brother offered. “I regret that we didn’t have a chance to play together like we used to do on Mars. I play a lot on the Illuminar at odd hours and the crew really enjoy it. I wish… Maybe if I get this bond nonsense fixed..maybe we can play with Lynn again, the three of us like we used to be?” “I think, I think that would be nice.” Trip said as they walked along towards the docking port where the Illuminar was. “Though I’m a bit rusty. I haven’t touched an instrument in over a month. So you’ll have to excuse me if it sounds like screeching cats.” She grinned at him, “Need to work on writing a lullaby now that you’ve got a kid on the way. The new one..” She was being discrete, “Does she play a musical instrument? And with the baby, you really need to follow Mom’s rules and have them learn an instrument.” She smiled sadly and he would easily pick up on the thought that she would likely never have a child. “Oh before I forget.” Trip paused, and then quickly removed his arm from his sisters and reached into his satchel. “I baked you a batch of cookies, just the way grandma makes em. Though probably not as good.” She frowned lightly as he took his arm away then her smile brightened as he produced cookies. “We don’t have kitchen facilities on the Illuminar, which is probably a good thing. Sometimes I feel a bit envious of the Exeter and all your ah, space yacht amenities.” “I wouldn’t call it a space yacht, I couldn’t bake them in my room. Besides, Dad’s the one who designed her. I think he knew that deep down, cookies solve all the galaxy’s problems.” She laughs softly. “I don’t want this to end. I don’t want you to go.” They were near the transporter area and she looked at the person who was manning the controls. “Ensign, would you mind stepping outside for a moment so that my brother and I can say goodbye in private please?” The transporter operator looked to Trip for confirmation. It was mildly irking to Sy “You heard her.” Trip said, a bit irritated the transporter operator needed his confirmation. “I made you 4 dozen. Extra chocolate chips. You don’t have to share.” She smiled and threw her arms around him, holding him tightly to her. She ignored the light flashes that leaked through the silk, they did not matter. What mattered was being here with him, right now. She hurt so badly but she hoped, prayed to the Betazoid Goddess that when the two of them met again that she would be better. Sy whispered, “Tell Lynn that I love her and miss her, please?” Sy pulled back and searched her brother’s face for confirmation that he would carry out her desires. “I will, of course I will.” he said leaning in and giving her a kiss on the top of her head. Taking the cookies, she moved to stand on the transporter pad and took a deep breath. And nodded. She trusted him more than she trusted anyone else in the universe, even their parents. The familiar tingling suffused her body, the sparkling lights danced before her eyes and Trip’s face dissolved and the Illuminar’s transporter room materialized before her. Luma’s mind-voice sang in Sy’s head and she took the deep settling breath that she needed. She was back home. Taking his small chipping hammer he tapped the fault line of the rock he was holding, splitting it down the middle. Taking the small eyepiece, he screwed it into his eye, holding the rock up he turned it slightly to the light, reading the strata and looking for any fossils in the rock, finding a small coil of what looked like a trilobite. Taking the pencil and a slip of paper, Caine took a rubbing of the fossil for his own collection and placed the rock in his small pack. Before he left the province he would stop by the office of the governor and allow the staff there to examine his collection to make sure that nothing of cultural significance would be taken off of Bajor. (posted by Alistair) (USS Exeter - Merek/ Shara quarters - CTO/3O Lieutenant Ravok & Lieutenant (J.G.) - Ire Williams - 1700) Ire stood outside Ravok`s quarters. Had felt bad that he had not seen his friend sooner since he had heard about his promotion to Lieutenant and Third officer. So here he was with a good bottle of Romulan Ale with him. He tapped the door chime and waited. ~Really hope this is not a bad time~ Ravok looked away from the puzzle him and Rayna were completing. " Come in. " He said. Ire entered as the door opened and looked around. He saw Ravok sitting with a young girl of what he guessed was about two years of age. ~Oka I have missed a lot~ Ravok stood up " Ire , how's it going " he said walking over there to shake his hand but his foot got tripped up on a small pile of toys. " Oh crap." He said catching himself. " Sorry. How are you ?" He said extending his hand to shake Ire's. Ire smiled and shook Ravoks hand. “I am sorry to interrupt your evening.” He looked from Ravok to Rayna and back again “but I realised that I had not come to congratulate you on your promotions” Ravok shook his head. " You're not interrupting anything. We were just doing some puzzles, but thank you. " He smiled at Rayna. As she continued to work on the puzzle at the table. “It looks like your promotions are not the only thing to celebrate.” " No I suppose not. Come in take a seat " Ravok offered. He offered Ravok the bottle of Romulan Ale he had brought. “A small gift.” Ravok took the bottle and looked at the label written in high Romulan. " Thank you , 2361. That's a good year, some of the finest harvest made it's way into this blend." He said, smiling at the offered gift. " Thanks alot, sorry I haven't been around much in the past few days. I'm just adjusting to the new changes in my life and I didnt want to really make it public about my daughter. It's a long story." “I can totally understand that. No need to apologize. Family is important.” " So how's Greta ?" He asked Ire. “She's good, dealing with what happend….I guess we all are but she's tough and capable. She will be fine.” He grinned. “So how is Keira doing?” " She's doing really well, considering...the new changes in my life " Ravok said nudging his head toward the little girl at the table. “And who is this young lady you were playing with when I came in.” Ravok walked over to Rayna and knelt down beside her. " Rayna" he said to get her attention she looked at him. " Sweetheart this is my good friend Ire. " Rayna looked at Ire and squinted her little eyes. 'Hi."she said, waving her hand. Ire moved off the seat and knelt down in front of Rayna. “Hallo Rayna. I am Ire how are you?” Rayna looked at his ears. " I'm Rayna , I'm Romulan, Keira is romulan too. My room is orange and I have a bed." Ravok started laughing and looked at Ire. " That's the most she has said to anyone. " Ire smiled. “Well I am honored.” He looked back at Rayna “Well Rayna. I am human and my room colour..” he paused for a moment trying to think. “...Is a boring grey color not like your amazing orange and I also have a bed.” A confused yet almost concerned look came across her face. " Keira can help you." " Yeah Ire, I'm sure Keira would love to help you pick a color. " Ravok said sarcastically and laughing. Ire smiled. “That is very nice of you Rayna but I think that Keira has more important things to do then help me pick a new color for my bed room and any way I would have to talk to Greta first.” Rayna got down from her chair and went to her pile of toys and grabbed a small toy of a sovereign class starship and brought it back over to Ire. " Here. I have more. " she said, offering it to Ire. Ravok smiled. " Well it seems like she likes you Ire, better watch out for Greta." Ire turned the Sovereign toy over in his hand and looked over at Rayna “Thank you very much.” He then looked over at Ravok. “I was thinking that you should be careful. If we introduce those two you might not be able to separate them and she will want to take her home.” Ravok laughed." Speaking of Greta. I feel a little I don't know...weird about being her boss. Don't get me wrong she's a good officer. I'm just worried that she may feel like I'm being a little unfair towards her from time to time. When you got...taken she froze up on the ground. To be honest man to man if that had been anyone else I'm pretty sure I would have ripped their head off." “I understand that and I appreciate what it took not to do that.” "I put her on torpedo bay duty so she could still feel useful. Where she may have viewed that as a punishment ,I did that as a friend. Like I said had it been anyone else and they wouldn't have been permitted to be on duty during that shift. I just wanted you to know that. You're like a brother to me Ire. " Ravok confessed. Ire nodded in acknowledgement. “I feel the same about you Ravok. All I want is for Greta to be safe…..but that's not why we are here. If we wanted to be safe we would never have left home.” He looked at Ravok. “All she wants is to be treated like any other member of your department. Yes she is the woman that I love and your friend but the moment you start treating her different from the other tactical officers because she is with me, you diminish her as a member of your department and the amazing starfleet officer I know she is. All she would want is for you to treat her like any other person under your command. If she messes up she takes the ramifications like everyone else. I know it's hard and I don't envy you but you can't make allowances for her because of who she is to me and she would be disappointed in you if you did.” " That would go over really well at home. sure." Ravok chuckled “Let me deal with any aftermath, that's why I am here. But she is your officer so treat her like you would anyone else.” " The thing is we built a brotherhood in the fighter wing. We all got to understand each other in ways we will never understand anyone else. Trip led us ,but when we were out there he never held us back. He knew what we could do. We knew what he could do. We knew his strategic commands before he even gave them. We clicked, all of us. Being spartans wasn't just some name or cool moniker. It was who we became. When I see Greta I don't see just another officer. I see another member of that spartan family. We charged into combat together, killed together. Won together. So what might seem like favoritism isn't favoritism at all. I know her, her capabilities, her weaknesses. I knew sitting her out entirely while you were captured would do more harm than good. Greta is hard as stone, she's as raw and viscous as they come in a combat situation. I just wanted to let you know that what I did for her wasn't a punishment, it was my own way of helping her through a tough time." Ravok explained. “Thanks for telling me. I appreciate it.” " No problem. As time goes on I'm sure I'll learn the best way to approach the different people in my department. Some may need a good thrashing from time to time. Some might just need a hug and a compliment." He laughed. He paused for a moment not sure whether he wanted to ask about what his plan was for Greta but decided against it was his department. He knew that Ravok would do the right thing. “Did you ever think that when we first got to Mars that we would be here, you third officer of a starship, and me a department head let alone with families and relationships.” Ravok looked at his daughter. " My first year in the academy was spent excelling beyond everyone. I aced every exam, every course. Then I realized something. I had always wanted to fit in, yet blowing everyone's scores out of the water was setting me further and further apart from my peers. So I made the decision right before the start of my second year to scale it back. I decided to devote that extra effort into others. I began tutoring other students in engineering, command , security, science. Whatever I could to help them. I found myself being spread thin, but I found that it made me feel connected to many people in ways I wouldn't have been had I stayed the way I was in my first year. " He paused and readjusted himself in his chair. " You see Ire, I became no one special for the benefit of others. I held myself back but by doing so I helped others reach their potential. Take Lieutenant Cortez for example. I helped her in Xeno-linguistics and in return I gained a valuable person in my life and the funny thing is as much as I helped others... in return they helped me and they didn't even know it. When I entered the academy I went in with the fact that I was the first full blooded romulan to do so and I wanted to make a case that I was better than what people thought we were. I wanted to be a captain and command others just so they would have to take orders from a romulan, but now...I don't want any of that. To even think that I would be Third officer is something that left my mind years ago. I am here now to serve not just my commanding officer ,but to serve others in the best way I can. Maybe I'll succeed, maybe I'll fail ,but atleast I know that when it's done and over with ,that I did everything in my power to raise others up. " He laughed and looked at the floor. " Now you find another romulan who will say the same thing, I bet you wont." Ravok smiled and wagged his finger. “I guess I will wait until I find one. I am sure we have some on the board.” He smiled. " How about you? Did you ever think you'd be where you are ?" Ravok questioned. “No. Not a chance. If you had told me when I graduated that I would be a Lieutenant and a head of Department within one year and a few months, I would have laughed and sent you to see a counselor for being delusional. All I ever wanted to do was to fly. It was my driving goal. It was the reason that I joined Starfleet and it was what I pushed for when I went through the Academy. I sacrificed a lot to get into Nova Squadron and I am saddened to say that I lost friends along the way to my narrow-minded focus. It took me to graduate and join the Wing to finally realize that there is a work life balance and how I should use it properly. I thought I had died and gone to the prophets when Trip gave me the Void Haunters. Me squadron leader fresh out of Academy it was brilliant of course it was not all zooming around in fighters, but that responsibility really helped to ground me in ways that I am only now becoming to understand. Don`t get me wrong I enjoy flying the Exeter. She is great, but I do miss my small craft. I am getting time in the Broken Bow which I have allocated. But it’s a pity that Trips dad did not design the Exeter with fighter capacity.” He smiled and shook his head. “I keep thinking that someone is going to jump out behind the bulkhead and tell me it was just some practical joke. Even though I am learning and developing as an officer a lot every day, it’s not easy and some days I feel that it would be nice to be a rookie pilot flying my little fighter. Yes, I miss the squadron but there will be others, but I can deal with that because this is my home….” He indicated the room although he meant the ship. “…and you are my family and there would have been no way I would have stayed on Mar as you all warped off on the Exeter.” Ravok smiled at Ire and looked around the room " I would pour us some ale and drink to that but as right now" he said looked at Rayna. "Isn't the best the best time" He said with a chuckle . Ire grinned. “I am sure you will find a good time to enjoy it.2 Ravok stood up " I have to start dinner , your more than welcome to stay if you want. Tonight we are having spaghetti at the personal request of the little one." " SPAGHETTI!" Rayna yelled with excitement. " Not yet , but soon." Ravok said to her. “I would but I'm cooking for Greta tonight and I should probably get back and get started but another time I would love to.” Ravok nodded his head. " Well there is always room for you at our table. " He said to Ire . “Thank you, that would be great. We will need to set something up.” Ravok turned to Rayna. " Say good bye to our friend " Rayna looked and waved " Bye !" “Good bye Rayna. It was great to meet you and thank you for the ship.” Rayna smiled. " Welcome" Ravok waved at his friend as he walked out the door. ( reply none ) ( posted by Robbie and Rob) (USS Exeter - Smith/Williams quarters - Ensign - Greta Smith& Lieutenant (J.G.) - Ire Williams - 1912) Ire stood back from the table and surveyed it. He had been planning this for the last couple of days and was slightly worried that he would be late back from seeing Ravok but as he glanced at the chronometer he thought that he had finished just in time. As the Exeter was going to depart Deep Space Nine in the next few days he had wanted to introduce Greta to some culinary delights from Bajor. It had been fun to go down memory lane and got some of the dishes that he had enjoyed as a child when he had visited his extended family. ~I hope the hasperat is not too hot. The lady said it was as mild as she could make it. Well I guess we will see~ The table was full of different foods from larish pie and mapa bread to hasperat and Bajoran shrimp with other delecases as well. ~I think I may have gone over the top. Ow well it's nice to try food from home~ Walking into their quarters, Greta sighed heavily and rubbed her shoulders. After having spent most of the day cataloguing and cross checking by sight, all the torpedoes and probes on board, her neck and shoulders were stiff. It took her a second to realise that there was a scent on the air. Stopping, she took off her uniform jacket and took a deep breath, "Something smells good." “I thought you might like some Brajoran food before we head back.” "You cooked? What did you break?" “I broke nothing and I cooked some of it. The rest I got from the station.” "Okay, what are you after, mister, because I told you, no fish allowed in here. They wierd me out." He looked at the shrimp and then at Greta. “It's not fish its shrimp. I thought you might like to try it as its Bajoran shrimp and not Earth shrimp.” He picked up the bowl and moved it to the counter away from the table. “But if you don't want to try it I`ll take it for lunch tomorrow.” "I'll try it. I meant the repeated requests for a fish tank." She responded with a smile. He brought the plate back and placed it back on the table. “I stopped asking for one ages ago.” "So, what's the occasion? What did I do to deserve this?" “You always deserve dinner and I thought it would be nice to try something different.” He gave her a smile as he indicated her to a chair and began to indicate the different types of food on the table. “This is larish pie and that`s tuwaly pie….that's mapa bread …. Hasperat the burrito looking thing maybe a bit spicy so watch out. I did ask for a mild one as it can be eye watering and tongue searingly hot. There is also springwine to try as well.” Smiling, Greta sat down and rolled her shoulders back, "Spice I can handle. " “And if we are still talking by the end of this there are a couple of jumja sticks and some Deka Tea for dessert.” "Sounds amazing. What do you recommend?" He grinned. “All of it but I might save the Hasperat till the end just in case.” He sliced the pie`s and the bread, plating two plates with pieces of everything so that she could try it all. He offered her one plate as he sat down with his. He opened the bottle of springwine and poured them both a glass. “I hope it's okay. It's a bit of a mismatch of things.” "Ire, it's perfect. " she smiled and took a sip of the wine. “So how was your day today?” he asked as he began to eat. "Long, boring and sore." “I am sorry.” "When you perform a visual inspection on every torpedo in our arsenal, you get a little sore from bending over them all the time." “I can understand that.” “I hope you won't be there for too much longer.” "It's quiet. Gives me time to consider what happened. " “I went to see Ravok earlier. Not to suck up to him on your behalf.” He said quickly before Greta could reply. “He got his full Lieutenant and is now the Third Officer so I went to congratulate him and got this.” He leaned over and pulled out a small toy model of a sovereign class starship off the shelf. . "Is that a toy?" “Yes it's a toy sovereign but did you know that Ravok has his daughter on board?” A look of shock flew over her face, "A daughter?" “She is a lovely two year old. Ravok doesn't want it to be widely known at the moment but maybe we should have them round for dinner one time its been a while since we have had that chance.” "We should. Might be good practice for us to see how we cope being around a kid." “That's true and it will also be nice to have a get together.” "How is he? I can only assume what a shock that must have been." “He seems to be taking it well. He understands that it will not be easy but is looking forward to the task.” "Sounds very Vulcan of him." “Rather him than me thought. Department head gives me enough stress as it is.” "Oh…" she replied looking away and taking a sip of her wine. “What?” "I … never mind." “What?” "I thought you wanted kids." Ire laughed. “I thought you meant being a third officer. Kids with you I definitely want, third officer not so much.” "Good. This food is amazing, Ire. Maybe, when we have ravok, kiera and his daughter over, we should do a selection of food. Some Bajoran, some Scottish and some romulan?" “As long as it's not just what did you call it haggis, neeps and tatties oh and not too much deep frying things.” "Your knowledge of Scottish cuisine needs some work Mister." She replied laughing. "I was thinking more shortbread and tablet." “Short bread and tablet?” he paused giving her a unshore look. "Shortbread is a biscuit and tablet…. Well that's almost pure sugar." “Pure sugar, okay?” "Poor Ravok. Fill his kid up with sugar and send her home." “I am sure Rayna would not be the only one bouncing off the wall on a sugar high.” he said with a grin. Greta looked at him, smiled knowingly and continued to eat her food. “What, don`t look at me that way.” "Oh come on. You know you get…. You know… giddy shall we say after sugar." “Hay I`m fine with sugar it's you I was meaning.” "What exactly are you saying? Are you suggesting I get a little excited after sugar?" “Yes that is exactly what I am saying. You do get a…..little excited after sugar.” Smiling, Greta looked at him, "and that's a bad thing because?" Ire grinned back. “No but maybe not good in front of small children in saying that if she is bouncing and you are a little excited then I am sure both of you will be fine.” "Boo!" She replied and stuck her tongue out at him. "Spoilsport." “Hay you can be as excited as you like until something happens and security has to get called.” "You wouldn't dare!" She exclaimed, standing up and walking to his side. Wrapping her arms around his shoulders, she leant forward and kissed his cheek. “Well as you are security you could just call yourself and then arrest yourself.” He leaned into her embrace. "Ire… I swear your humour is as bad as your ability to pick up your dirty washing." she laughed and wiped a tiny bit of spicy sauce on his nose. “Hay I can tidy up after myself just because we have different opinion of where it goes is not my fault.” "Yeah on the floor which is not tidy." She grinned. "You might want to check your nose." He blinked as the vapers hit his eyes. “Ohhh.” he wiped it hurriedly off his nose. “Just because you can handle hot and spicy food does not mean I can.” he grinned as his eyes started to stream. "Oh poor baby. What can I do to make it better?" “No, No keep away. I see that glint in your eye. You're just going to smear it all over my face.” He said laughing. "Maybe, maybe not." She replied with a glint in her eyes. He had been removed from research duty and placed on active exploration duty on the Exeter. Vesper had been assigned some time ago as the CMO. ~Good for him, I knew the man had great potential~ Scuttlebutt was that Dural had been moved to replace a former colleague of his. Reyelle was a good man and deserved better than he got. The Cardassian would have attended the funeral, but services were conducted in the Gamma Quadrant and his passing wasn’t announced until they had made it back to Deep Space Nine. Dural had received his orders the day after they had returned. He had until this day to report, because the Exeter was departing on their new mission. It took some measure of courage to go down to Bajor and pay his final respects to an old friend. He didn’t know what kind of reception he would receive, a former member of the Cardassian military stepping foot on Bajor. He was not exactly “welcomed with open arms”, but the hatred had worn away over the decades and was replaced with something else. Optimistic caution. Details of Dr. Kryos and his mannerisms, him always leading with the left foot and the way the corners of his eyes crinkled when he smiled or laughed, were enough to survive the impromptu questioning from what Dural had learned was another former colleague of Reyelle and the person he was sent to when he inquired about the doctor. From different worlds and different parts of his life, for several hours they talked about the man they both knew. Dural paid his final respects and left the planet a better person. Dural took one final breath outside the door and entered this wholly new and wonderful sick bay that would from this point forward be his place of work. The doors parted silently but quickly as the large man stepped into the room. “I’m looking for Doctor Vesper,” he said with a smile. They had spent the last month exploring, making connections with allies and old friends, and it was exciting and invigorating. The Exeter was on her way to the Beta Quadrant after a weeklong stay on Cardassia, and had stopped briefly at Mars for a resupply. They would only be on Mars for roughly a week. Then they would receive their new orders and head back out. Still even a small stay on Mars was enough to bring back fond memories. As he rounded the corridor and approached at Commodore Remae’s office, he buzzed the door and entered. “Hope I am not interrupting, but Spacedock OPS said that you wanted to meet with me sir.”, reported Lt Commander Williams. The Commanding Officer of the USS Exeter was alone but that was just fine. "Quiet so, Commander, I know your time on Mars is short and I wanted to ask you to incorporate a trip to Starbase Freedom when you do depart and check in on them, see how things are going. There are few engineers from Mars who also want a trip there, they need to relieve and update those crew who have been working on there, during the past few months.", he said offering a chair. “Not a problem sir. "How was your last mission?", he said casually, he had read all the reports of course, but he wanted a quick chat before time would swoop them up again and the Exeter would be gone. “Dealing with the cult was taxing for the crew. But our trip to Cardassia Prime was rather pleasant.” "How is everyone, how is Erin?", he asked... it had been a long time since he has seen the former Counsellor and both he and Jana were concerned ever since the whole 'Dulon' thing. “Lieutenant Cortez is performing exemplary sir. But I sense you are not asking about her out of professional concern.” Remae laughed, "Yes, well, I think we've kinda of adopted her a little... perhaps the daughter we never had. Does that make any sense?", he said and for a moment, he looked away, vacant, distant, thinking about another lifetime. "Sorry, the timeline convergence, just because I remember all the previous timelines of all the previous Remae's, doesn’t make it easy. In one of the timelines, we had a daughter, Jana and I, MacKenzie her name was... we've been looking for her but, it looks like she didn't make it to this universe and I've not really told Jana much of this.", he said, distracted... He turned the terminal around, a picture of a Bajoran woman with red hair appeared, "My memory tells me, this is pretty close to what she looked, looks, might of looked like.", he said and then waved his hand and dismissed the thought. "Sorry again.", he said pulling himself together. "Now, lets get onto your business, I'd like for all your officers and crew to assembled on the new platform outside the OPS centre tomorrow for your ceremony. Captain Sekals event was quite something, we'll see if we can do something similar for you!" “Yes sir.” Trip nodded. "What are your plans, after going off to Freedom? You may be aware of the reports, but a chunk of the fleet is back, scattered around the galaxy and we're attempting to get them back to Sol. Its confusing out there. A lot of worlds who left, have come back, some didn't want to, and some did. Its a bit of a mess.", he asked and waited for him to reply. “Wherever the Fleet needs us sir, but I think continuing to visit our member worlds, remind them that we are still here, we still care. I think is something our crew is well suited for.” "All that should be no problem at all.", he said and after a bit more conversation, he dimissed the officer. "Welcome back to you all.", he said arranging his uniform and looking at each of the crew of the Exeter one at a time, an effort to try and remember them. "Attention to orders.", he ordered and automatically, all around him came to attention as he read from his PADD. "Lt Commander Trip Williams. By order of Starfleet Command, the Office of Admiral Jana Bell and the President of Earth, you are hereby promoted to the rank of Captain. We look forward to hearing great things from you and this crew. ", he said and tapped his commbadge and said one word, "Now." Across the sky, the combined fighter squadrons of Mars streaked across the open space, some were letting go fireworks... colours, noises, a festival of ceremony designed on Mars and for one moment, everyone was memories by the spectacle of lights. "As part of the next generation of Commanding Officers take flight into the galaxy, we know you will do us and Starfleet proud.", he said replacing the officer’s pips so they correctly spelt out the rank of Captain. "Congratulations Captain. Keep an eye out there, we may need you sooner rather than later.", he said so quiet that only Williams could hear. So here is a consolation prize.” “If you’re proposing to cheer me up, then this is going to go south really badly.” Ailynn said. “What’s this?” “Open it.” Ailynn opened the box, to see a single gold pip. She looked up at him, and smiled, blushing deeply. “Full Commander?” She said, gently. “Well I mean, why not? Unless you rather stay a lieutenant.” Ailynn shook her head. “I’ve no problem with being a Lieutenant, but this is amazing.” “You deserve it, but I also consider it an investment, and investment in someone I know will be a fine officer and a future Captain.” Ailynn sighed. "Hopefully that won't be for a long time. I'm happy here, and don't see myself moving anytime soon. That said." She half smiled, "I said that about being a neurosurgeon and now look." “You never know, with all the new ships coming out. You’ve got a decent shot of being Captain in a year or two. Or maybe never. But who knows. I’m a captain at 23, so what the %$@# do I know about anything?” Ailynn laughed, “About as much as your daft backside always did?” She winked, passing the box back, and pulling out the front of her uniform. “Do the honours please?” Ailynn stood up out of her seat. Trip stood up and walked over and took the pip from the box and placed next to the other two. "Congratulations Commander." “Thank you Captain.” She smiled. “Just like back in the tree house.” "Now then, back to work?" She nodded silently. “Back to work” Ailynn agreed. “With your permission?” "Dismissed." Ailynn nodded, and turned, smiling gently at her old friend. Silently, she nodded, a whole conversation perhaps passing between them in that one glance. Leaving the ready room, she moved across the Bridge, taking up the position in the main chair. (reply none) (posted by Mark and Will) (USS Exeter - Ready Room - CO, Captain Trip Williams and CFO, Lt. JG Ire Williams -11.00) “Ire, buddy, have a seat.” Trip said as Ire entered into the ready room. “We need to have a chat.” Ire paused for a split second as he sat down on the offered char. We need to have a chat, had been that opening start to a few conversations with Trip. Which normally meant that he had done something that needed a friendly chat rather than an official conversation. For a split second he wondered if he could make it to the door but he was here now and these chats were specifically because Trip did not want to make it official. ~I did not get blind drunk on Deep Space Nine, the department is performing well. So I guess it’s about the Bird of Prey or Away mission, probably away mission~ “A chat? I have not crashed anything recently I promise.” A hint of a smile danced across his face. “Well I would hope not. If you crashed we’d all be dead.” “Well you don't call me crash bandicoot for nothing Trip.” “How would you rate your performance so far?” “It could have been better. The department is running smoothly but the away mission….bringing Ryelle back and Ensign Pages injures well that was my fault and I accept responsibility for that.” Trip nodded. “Thing is Ire, after careful consideration, I’m going to need you to remove the black pip from your uniform, because as of a few minutes ago, when I submitted my official log, you are no longer a Lieutenant Junior Grade.” ~Well it was fun while it lasted~ Ire nodded. “I understand Trip.” “No Ire, I don’t think you do. Otherwise you would be smiling.” Ire paused and looked at Trip unsertianly. “Smiling?” “You’ve performed exceptionally well, and Ensign Page’s injuries were not your fault. In a way yes, they were. You should have ordered her to stand down and let the veteran Master Chief Brown do the space walk. But in the end, sometimes as a leader its hard to say no to people who are overeager, but we can’t control people’s own recklessness. Next time you’ll know, send the person with the most experience, not the person who volunteers. In the end Page shares as much of the blame as you do.” “It was still my craft my fault.” Trip then placed a box in front of him. “And you will get better, but you can’t blame yourself for every small thing that goes wrong, otherwise you find yourself trapped in a pit of quicksand you can’t get out of, of second guessing and regret.” Ire nodded. “Understood. You learn from your mistakes to not repeat them.” “Now open the damn box, Lieutenant Senior Grade Ire Williams.” His hand reached for the box and paused as he looked up at Trip. “Lieutenant Senior? Me? Are you sure Trip I mean there are others on board who deserve it more. I mean what about Erin or the Doc. I just fly the ship.” “You’re ready.” He paused, took a deep breath and nodded. “Thank you Trip. I appreciate the trust and accept the responsibility that comes with the rank.” He opened the box and took out the rank insignia. He looked at it for a moment before putting it in place on his collar. He replaced the one he had removed back into the box and closed it. “And remember, don’t be afraid to stop people from being reckless, just because they are the first to volunteer. You’ll have a lot more responsibility now.” “I will Trip.” “Dismissed.” “Yes Captain.” Ire stood, came to attention, nodded and left the ready room. (reply none) (posted by Will and Robbie) (Mars –The Canton Bar - Lieutenant Ire Williams & Lieutenant (J.G.) Greta Smith - 14.02) Ire sat at a window seat waiting for Greta to arrive. He had been so excited to tell her about his promotion that coming all the way out to the Canton Bar may have not been the best idea, but it was a nice place and has some good memoirs. It also had the added advantage of being off base which meant that there were civilians here as well as Starfleet which was nice. He sipped his drink looking over the view of Mars thinking about how far he had come when he had first arrived what seemed such a long time ago. Walking into the bar, Greta looked at ite sat by the window and smiled. ~He's going to kill me for not saying anything sooner.~ she thought to herself as she walked over. "I hope it's me you are dreaming about there, fly boy." She smiled as she put her arms around his neck from behind. He smiled at her. “Always. Glad you came I have something to tell you.” "Oh? Should I be sitting for this?" “Yes you might fall over with shock.” Greta sat down, looking at him concerned. "What is it?" “I had a chat with Trip earlier and for some crazy reason, I have been promoted to Lieutenant can you believe it me.” Looking at him, she smiled softly. "Oh…." “Greta are you okay? What’s the matter?” "It seems that something is going around." He frowned for a moment. “What's going around?” "I have something to tell you too." “You okay?” "Take a look at my collar." She replied cryptically, tilting her head to one side. He stared at her collar for a moment not comprehending what she was asking him. ~Wait a moment~ “You got Lieutenant. That's wonderful.I am so proud of you.” "It came as a bit of a surprise. " “Did you get it today as well?” Shaking her head, "No, Wednesday. " “But that was days ago. Why did you not tell me we could have celebrated then?” "It's… I needed some time to let it sink in." “It's okay.” "I know I should have told you. I'm sorry." “What's the matter, Greta. I thought you would have been happier don`t you want to be a Lieutenant?” "It's not that. After the last mission, I wasn't expecting it. Not after what happened. " He gave her a reassuring smile. “Greta they saw past that. You are an excellent officer and yes the last mission was hard. As Trip told me this earlier when I asked him the same thing due to me injuring Rylee.” He paused for a moment making sure he got it right. “And you will get better, but you can’t blame yourself for every small thing that goes wrong, otherwise you find yourself trapped in a pit of quicksand you can’t get out of, of second guessing and regret” He gave her a smile. “And he is right you know.” "About what?" She asked “About the more you think about what happened, about what went wrong you will keep on a spiral and it will become a self fulfilling prophecy. Where you will be so worried about doing the right thing and second guessing yourself you will end up doing the thing that you are worried about.” He paused for a moment and looked at her. “Does that make sense?” Sitting back, Greta nodded. "It does." “Thank goodness I was thinking I was about to turn into Jack Roberts.” "No, never. You have some fun about you." She winked. “Lets celebrate shall we. Who would ever think we both would have made it to Lieutenants.” "Not me for sure but that's just for me. You, definitely. " “Do you think you will try and get home now that we are back on Mars. I know we don't have a log but?” "We could. We're shipping off to the starbase soon don't forget. " “That's true but we do have a few more days. I am sure if we asked we could do it.” "It would be nice though. My brother is home and I know he wants to make sure you are honourable. " she replied with a flat tone. “Meet that family…. Are you sure that you would not want to go and see them yourself?” "Are you avoiding my brother because you're scared?" She replied, impishly. He paused for a moment not sure which way to go. “Greta don`t take this the wrong way but brothers are very protective about their sisters dating other people, then there is the fact that a lot of your family are in the marines which already have an ingrained issue with the fleet personnel and finally you're a Smith.” Fighting down the urge to smile, "what do you mean a Smith?" “You may have not realised my parents ship had a few Smith on board. Your aunt Jennifer taught me how to fly. I know all about how tight the Smith clan is.” "Well, you had better get used to it mister. It may have escaped your notice, but you are marrying into the Smith clan." (Reply none) (Posted by Jackie and Robbie) (USS Exeter - Nine and Dine - Bar manager Caity DuBois - 1600) They’d left Deep Space Nine a couple of hours ago, and were on their way to the Bolian system, starlines warping past them. Ailynn stepped in the bar, suddenly nervous, the vestiges of her confidence disappearing as she approached the bar. She pulled her uniform straight, she’d taken to alternating between the trouser and the dress variant of the uniform. Today happened to be a dress day. She greeted a hello to a couple of people that she saw, and moved toward her habitual seat at the far end of the bar. After a couple of minutes, she brushed a bit of dust of the front of her dress and caught Caity’s eye. She fidgeted in the seat, her normal self-assurance having utterly dissipated. Looking up with a smile, Caity took a breath, out down the glass she had been cleaning and walked over to the first officer. She cleared her throat, which was suddenly dry. “Evening Caity, how are things this evening?” "Good. Usual, Ma'am?" “No, thank you. I fancy something different this evening, She made a show of checking out the back row, and picked a bottle. “A whisky soda please.” "No problem." Caity turned and pulled the chosen bottle off the shelf. Ailynn watched Caity lift the bottle and open it, and begin to pour a shot, she could clearly see her face, and her eyes. “...and a date?” Stopping for a second, Caity paused knowing what she had asked but toying with the idea of teasing her just a little. She handed Ailynn her drink and turned back to the replicator, "one or two?" “Well, I hoped more than one, but I figured that we’d start at one and see...wait what?” Ailynn said, perplexed. “I’m confused.” "A date. I assume you meant the fruit?" Ailynn frowned. “That was mean.” she took a deep sip from her whiskey and soda. Smiling, she turned back and laughed a little. "Come on, you walked into that one." “I suppose I did, however it still wasn’t nice.” She scowled in mock annoyance. “So will you? Allow me to take you out on a date I mean?” Ailynn was still nervous, her heart pounding, even though Caity seemed smiley and happy that she’d been asked. "Yes." “You will?” Ailynn was honestly surprised. "I said yes didn't I?" “Erm...wow. Gosh.” "You sound surprised. So, where are you taking me?" “I have a couple of ideas.” Ailynn said coyly. “How do you feel about one of those old funfairs?” "I haven't been to one of those in ages. I will say that I am a mean shot on the coconut shy." “Good. I have some holodeck time, and a program that I found. I think that you’ll like it.” Ailynn smiled gently, her heart was almost back at it’s normal level. "I have to ask, why were you surprised I said yes?" “In all honesty I’m not certain. I’d just got it in mind that you’d say no. All the ways I’d planned this conversation with you this was the furthest from what I’d had in mind.” She smiled coyly. Her insides a quiver. "Well, it seems that someone has been working for us I think." Ailynn laughed, and took another deep sip of her drink. “I’m assuming that Lieutenant Cortez has been bending your ear too?” "I swear she thinks she's a cupid. She has a new glow about her since deep space 9." Smiling, Ailynn nodded. “She has. She’s about as subtle as…” Ailynn’s brain failed her. “...something that isn’t subtle.” She shrugged. “I don’t know where I was going with that. I blame you.” She teased gently. "Me? What did I do?" Caity smiled softly, leaning on the bar. “You were fetching me a date. Still haven’t had it.” Ailynn winked. "You’re trouble miss Bracken. " caity laughed and turned back to the replicator, tapped a few buttons on it and turned back handing a small box to Ailynn. She took the small box off Caity, and smiled warmly. “Cute. Thank you.” "It's nothing much. A small token until you can win me a plush on our date." Ailynn laughed. “I see. Did I hear a gauntlet being thrown down? And failing that, what would you like in it’s place?” "Small box of chocolates. " Smiling, Ailynn finished her drink. “Then we shall see what we can do.” She passed the glass back to Caity. “Thank you.” "Thank you. " she smiled back. "You sure you are ready for this? They didn't call me dead shot Dubois for nothing. " she winked. “Well...deadshot. They don’t call me...Barely-hits-the-target Bracken for nothing either.” She winked playfully. Tomorrow? 7pm?” "Sounds like a date." Ailynn smiled and lifted herself off her chair. “I’d better go. Tomorrow then.” As she left the bar, she turned to see Caity still there, they exchanged a glance and a smile. Trip said as he entered Dale's office for their lunch meeting. "How are the sleeping beauties at the cabin? Did you spend the night over there with them?" Ailynn and ronnie had gone over to Dale's cabin the day before for an overnight. A rest well deserved. “Captain.” Dale smiled, holding her arms out for Trip, ignoring all normal protocol, she hugged him and kissed him on the cheek. “I got back to the cabin late last night. Cooked breakfast this morning. They left at about ten I think. Judging by the empty bottles, they had a nice evening. "Must have been a nice break. Especially for Ailynn. She's been through a ringer." Dale nodded, “She has, but she’s made of sterner stuff than she allows herself to think. She’ll pull through, and she’ll put herself in harm’s way again next time.” "So, I guess I'm a captain now.Who'd have thought the little Williams kids, Trip and Sienna, next door would pan out like this." “The fleet is in your blood, Ailynn’s too. The only ones that didn’t know that were yourselves.” "Of course you Knew this was going to happen, didn't you?" “I sense a change in conversation. Coffee?” "Please." “I had sources of information that no-one else did yes.” Dale admitted, pouring them a coffee each, strong and dark, a rich roast that was her favourite. “Trip, you’ve known me since you were a little boy, and I changed your nappy enough times, lets not toy with each other.” She sipped at her coffee, wincing at the heat, and strength. "I'm not mad. Im not. Because you never used this knowledge for gain. You let things play out. But…" “But?” "When I was at my lowest, after Rae, with no Hope. At my darkest, you knew. You knew I was going to find Ashlyn. You had the light to rekindle my hope and you didn't…" “There was only so much I could say. ‘Don’t worry...I know who you’re going to marry, and your daughter was sleeping in this bed only last night?” "I know you couldn't say anything but… sorry, I didn't plan on bringing this up but it came out." “Trip honey. It’s okay. Get it out better than let it fester ill feeling. Could I have told you more? Maybe, however you have to realise that my own world had just been pulled out from under me.” "It's just, as my mentor, you never kept anything from me. Were always honest. Always forthright. And you knew who, if you didnt interfere, I would marry, the job I'd have. You knew I had a daughter. Well kind of. You had her work for me, knowing full well who she was to me. I should be grateful but… how much was not wanting to mess with things. How much was wanting me to be with Ash?" “Her working with you was regrettable, but I had no choice. Only Ronnie knows most of the key events. She needed to be around you, Ash, Ailynn and the Exeter. The first event has already been altered, and I think you know how.” "The death of Dr. Kyros Ryelle." “Correct. That was supposed to have been Ailynn. In Ronnie’s timeline Ailynn Bracken died on that interceptor.” "I know. I just. It weighs heavy on me. Had I known. I could have prevented that. Used transport inhibitors…i could have saved him damnit!" “If I’d have told you everything, something else would go wrong. ” "Damn the laws of temporal screw you the @#$@ over. Its like an obstacle race. Dodge one. New one arises. It just… coming to grips to the reality nothing is in my control. I just. Its hard Dale." “I know Sweetie, but we are trying to avoid the apocalypse of this sector, and we’re already off the map without a compass. Even I don’t know how things will go or when. Which is why I had to take the risk of upsetting you, and introducing Ronnie onto your crew. I’m just as frustrated Trip.” "Honestly at this point, I think even Ronnie is flying blind. Which is probably for the best." "Don’t be too sure of that. She knows more than she lets on. It's possible she's just as clever as Ailynn is. She needs a gentle hand though." "She's kinda special though. That 'daughter' of mine." Dale smiled deeply. "I'm glad. I remember when she arrived on my doorstep. Cold, alone, and horribly scared. An orphaned girl looking for a place to belong." "She's found it with us. That much is sure." “Good.” Dale said. “James...When you lost Rae, it took every fibre of my being to stop myself telling you that you would feel normal again. Thing is though, we’re the sum of our experiences, and if I’d have sugar-coated things or wrapped you up in cotton wool, like you wanted me to, and indeed like I so very nearly did. Your experiences would be very very different, and tragic though it is, you’re the bigger person for pulling yourself through it. I just held your hand when you needed it.” "I know, and I love you for it. The universe just forgets im just a kid." “Trip. About five minutes ago, I was just a kid, I was barely an Ensign(sg) at your age. Turn round a couple of times, and thirty-five years goes…” She clicked her fingers. “Give it another five minutes and you’ll be sat in an office like this one probably having similar awkward conversations about things that you don’t really understand, but since you’re an Admiral everyone seems to expect you to.” She smiled warmly. "Oh, they're never making me an Admiral Dale." “Oh? Why not.” "Because I aint giving up my ship." Dale smiled, in amusement. “Never say never Mr Williams. Never say never.” (reply none) (posted by Will and Mark) (Mars - coffee shop - CSO Lt JG Erin Cortez & FSCO Commander James Hart - 1403) Sitting at a table in one of the many coffee bars on Mars, Erin had a number of PADDs on the table. Her next project, if her team could pull it off, would be something good and give them an edge on purely scientific missions. It also meant that they could provide support in more dangerous situations. Sighing, she placed the PADD she had been reading on the table and picked up her drink. Looking at the people around her, whilst she was happy to be back on Mars, something was different for her. She felt better, stronger and just more stable. “Well look what the cat dragged in.” JImmy said as he walked through the doors, full commander pips on his uniform. It was quiet on Mars for the most part. With Starfleet getting back to business there weren't as many threats that the fighter squadron had to deal with. Now they mostly ran supply escorts. Quiet was good. Quiet kept people alive. Looking up from her PADD, a wry smile crept over Erin’s face, “Same could be said for you.” “What brings you to my favorite coffee bar?” “Oh this is your favourite? Well, great minds must think alike.” she replied and looked back at her PADD. ~I did not know that and now, here we are. Well, work with it girl. Don’t rush anything. Just be you~ “That would be giving your mind too much credit.” he said with a laugh. “Tell me something, has it been quiet here with us gone?” “Hell no. It’s been busier. Whole sector. More trade, export and import. Utopia Planitia is in full swing. Mars ain't a ghost town anymore. No more ensigns running the show either.” “So you’ve been busy? Good for you. Keep you out of mischief then.” “You still don’t know me Cortez. I’m not a mischief maker. I’m a rule follower.” ~I bet he is one of the good guys.~ “I may be prickly, but I’m what they call lawful good.” "Lawfully good? Never been in trouble at all?" “Alignments can change. Got in trouble in high school. Academy straightened me out. Sure I had a kid out of wedlock. But I’ve been in that kids life day one. No fights, no reprimands, no nothing.” "Makes me wonder about you though. " “High school me was a different story. King of the Hill. Big man on campus. Dated the hottest girl at school. Captain of like three sports teams. She was head cheerleader. I did whatever I pleased. The Academy has a way of...let’s say getting that out of your system.” "Sure does. This life, Starfleet, has the same effect. I'm not the person I was when joined. I'm not the same person I was when I left Mars." “Yeah, I’ve heard.” "Excuse me?" “Rumors can fly faster than warp Cortez. Lots of folks have heard about your one night stand with the mysterious Bajoran intel officer. Didn’t know you had it in you.” Blushing, Erin looked down at her drink, "So, it's the subject of gossip now?" “Everything is the subject of gossip. It’s part of the human condition.” "I let loose. Big deal." Jimmy giggled. “Your words, not mine.” "It was a moment… just right place, right person, right time. I'm not ashamed of it." “Honestly I never cared for the one night stand. Never had one. For me, there has to be a connection there. Sure my high school sweet heart was a bit of a bitch. But Cerise and I, we had a deep spiritual connection. Sure she was nicknamed Everest Tits, and that helped. But I could always feel it in my jellies, she had a lot more to offer the world than just being Queen Bee.” "Your jellies?" Erin asked with a raised eyebrow. “You ever feel anything in your jellies?” "I feel things in the pit of my stomach. If that is my jellies then yes." “It’s from a 21st century movie I saw as a kid. Jellies are essentially, well, It's that thing. You know, you feel it. When you really believe in something despite everyone telling you you're wrong.” "Now that I understand." She replied with a smile. "You want to know the real reason I did what… well, you know." “You were desperate?” Jimmy said with a laugh. "Wow." Erin laughed. "No, I was not desperate. I.. realised that I wasn't being who I should be. I wasn't letting myself be me. Things happened on this last mission. Things that brought into focus that past events in my life were still holding onto me. So I stopped. Stopped thinking about them and stopped letting them occupy my waking thoughts." “I see.” Jimmy said nodding. "I let go. I stopped being the victim. Stopped being the whimpering little girl I used to be." “Oh, are you sure you weren’;t whimpering.” Jimmy said with a belly laugh. “Sorry, you opened the door and I had to take it.” Laughing, Erin smiled, "I am not saying a word." “Honestly, I’m kinda of disappointed.” "Oh really?" “I’ve been trying to get that lesson through your thick head since I met you, and you’re telling me is all I had to do to get you stop playing the victim was take you into my bed?” "What makes you think you could get me in your bed in the first place?" “Really?” "I'm not easy prey, I'll have you know." “Really?” "Yeah actually. " “Tell that to your hook up.” "What makes you think that I wasn't the hunter?" “But you know how confident I am?” Jimmy said as he took out his personal communication device. He typed in some data and sent it to Erin. “That’s how confident I am. It’s a time and a place. My house, at 20:00. I bet you show up, I bet you doll yourself up, and I bet you wont be there to read philosophy.” Jimmy got up and made his way to the door. “And I bet, even though you want to not show up to prove me wrong. You’ll be there anyways. It’s not an indictment of how easy you are, but how good I am. Like I said, I don’t believe in the casual hook up. But I do have a feeling about you. You’ll be there Cortez. I feel it in my jellies.” He smiled and then left the coffee shop. He was most pleased with his play on words. He wasn’t meaning that he was good in the terms of his game, but of his character. And deep down, he knew Erin was magnetically attracted to it. Because yes, he was that damn good. Looking at the address, Erin now had the choice. Did she go, find out more or did she stop. Did she not go, teach him a lesson. Part of her wanted to not go, to sit at home with a good book and a bottle of tequila. ~who are we kidding? You know you are gonna go, just not right at that time.~ (Reply none) (Posted by Jackie and Will) (Mars - Hart Residence - CSO Lt JG Erin Cortez & FSCO Commander James Hart - 2030) Walking up to the house, Erin took a breath. She had been told 8pm and, as it was now closing at 20:30pm, she felt a little more confident. Dressed casually in black Jean's, black shirt and a little leather jacket, she walked up to the door and knocked. “Welcome,” Jimmy said as he opened the door and welcomed her in. “You’re right on time.” "Oh really?...." Jimmy then handed her a PADD, “Press play on that log, check the time stamp. That is from 1300 hours, correct?” "Okay...what's going on?" “Ok, press play.” Looking at him, she pressed play even though part of her knew what it was going to say. =/\=Personal log, Erin will probably be dropping by today, she’s not gonna show up at 20:00 like i said, instead she’ll show up, I’m gonna say at 20:30, because she’s gonna try and make me think she wont show up, and sweat it out. So typical.=/\= Erin fought down the urge to just swear and leave. ~no, that would prove an entirely wrong point.~ “I know, you want to hit me right now, huh?” "That's one way of putting it. Honestly, still haven't decided to stay yet." “But you will. And you want to know why?” "Go on because part of me is close to turning around and…" “Because, I made cookies.” She laughed, couldn't help herself. "Oh…. I am sorry." “What’s so damn funny.” "That's so not what I was expecting you to say. That and the thought of you with an apron on is just… kind of cute actually." “Every man in the Williams family cooks and bakes. We have since, I dunno, 1776.” "Oh." She replied now feeling instantly bad. ~great, put your foot in that one~ “And we use my great grandmother’s cookie recipe which dates back to the 1800’s.” "I'm sorry. I just… my family the women bake. My dad wouldn't know what a cookie cutter was if you showed him. And I suppose I learnt a lesson here." “That I’m a mystery wrapped in an enigma?” "Yeah, you are not at all what I thought you were. " Showing her to the living room, he motioned for her to sit. There was a plate of cookies on the coffee table. “So who did you think I was?” Sitting down, she smiled softly, "I know you are a good man. You told me about your son, Tommy. But I was not expecting a master Baker." “Oh, I’m not the master. That’d be my cousin D.J.” "Seriously though, I had this image that you talked a good talk but …. " “But what?” Looking at the plate of cookies, Erin blushed slightly, "I thought you might have been playing a game." “I’m not a kid fresh out of the academy. I’ve got a kid. I don't have time for games.” "It's… look, I'm not the person I was. I've done the bad boy thing. Most girls do. Now, I find myself looking for something different. Something better. " “Like what?” "I'm not going to hide and try and not be a kid. I make No apologies for who I am. Not anymore. " “Well that’s a good start.” "So, you ask me anything. I'm now an open book. I'm not hiding anymore." “What do you want in life Cortez?” "Firstly, for you to call me by my name. Erin." “Sports habit, everyone called everyone by their last name. If I call you by your last name it’s not being cold or formal, its more a term of, well familiarity.” "But, seriously. Stability. I know in Starfleet stability is hard to come by. What I want in life is to be the best version of me I can be and, maybe at some point in the future, have someone who can help me be that version of me. Someone I can turn to, someone that I can help be the best version of them. I'm babbling aren't I?" She stopped, picked up a cookie and took a bite. “No, keep going. By the way, how’s the cookie?” Smiling, Erin was torn. Torn between telling the truth and winding him up just a little. "It's… amazing actually. " “Of course it is.” He said with a smile. "What do I want from life? Family. It's that simple. My mom and dad are my world. They showed me what a family could be. So, if you want the truth… that's what I want." “A family?” She nodded, "yes. Idealistic I know." “It’s a commendable goal. It’s why I took the posting on Mars. But you knew that. Having a family in Starfleet is hard. Somehow my grandparents, Gramps and Granny Williams managed to raise six kids while my Gramps had a successful Starfleet career. Granted, my Uncle Duke helped raise my Aunt Claire, and my Uncles, Aunts, and my mom did high school on Earth living with my great grandparents, but still. They found a way to make it work.” Listening, Erin found herself looking at him as he spoke. There was something about Jimmy despite all the bluster and the open book he seemed to be. There was something that still pulled her in. “But it’ll be work. What are you willing to sacrifice for it?” "If I found the right person… it's simple. To make a family work, you have to sacrifice anything. My mom sacrificed her commission to stay with my father and to have me. She went into private practice and she always says that it was the best decision she ever made. Me, I would be willing to sacrifice everything. A family is work. A family is people working in tandem to make each part great. It's support, it's love. If I found someone that I fell in love with and I had to leave the fleet to keep my family together then I would. If that person was willing to support me staying in, then great. But, family is compromise. It's two people working together for each other." “It’;s why thing didn’t work out for my ex and I. I wasn’t at that point in my career. But now, family is the key, and so I’m happy here, and I get to see my son every day.” "So, what are you looking for, Jimmy? What do you want from life now?" “I guess, family. I love my son, and it’d be great to have more kids.” he said laughing. “But you need two to tango, so they say.” "That's true." She replied with a grin. "What's Tommy like?" “He’s fun. He loves camping, playing sports, baking. He’s great.” "He sounds like a mini you." “Yeah, it drives him mom nuts.” "Having kids is something my mom said was a blessing. If it is in my future, I just hope that I can be someone they can look up to." “That’s up to you. You get to choose who you are.” "I've been a bit of a kid. I let things get to me that I shouldn't have. I still am a work in progress. " “Why do you say that?” "Because, even though I know I have grown, I still feel like I have more to do. " “You’re only 23. It’s ok.” "You could say that we all need to grow, that it's a constant process. I know that. Right now, I feel like I am at a point in my Life where I want to be calm, not be a kid. Damn it, I'll say it. I want to be a grown up." She said, with a smile. “That’s probably one of the most grown up thing I’ve ever heard you say.” "Why thank you kind sir." “Even Peter Pan had to grow up.” "True. Took me a while to realise that. I can't go through life with a weight on me that needn't be there. I suppose I realised that growing up meant accepting my past, owning it and not letting it get in the way of what I want." Jimmy smiled, this time he actually believed her, believed that she wanted to grow up and not hide behind her fears, not playing the victim. He saw her in a different, more attractive light. “And what is it that you want?” He said with a smile. "From life or right now?" “Why not both.” "Well right now I'd settle for a drink to go with these cookies." Jimmy smiled and went to the kitchen and came back with two glasses of egg nog, as it was almost the season for it. “Careful now, it's homemade and has alcohol in it.” "I grew up outside Santiago. We made our own pisco. But I will be good." She smiled and took a glass. Taking a sip, she raised an eyebrow, "You weren't kidding were you?" “Williamses love their bourbon.” "My dad still has some of the last bottle I made. I should have him send it up here one day." “Don’t waste it on me. Save it, give it to whoever you think is the one to make you an honest woman.” "Honest woman? That's going to be a tough task." “Depends on who the person is I guess.” "I mean, you seem to know me well enough now. Who do you think is crazy enough to take me on?" “I could do it.” Raising an eyebrow, Erin felt herself blush a little, "Pardon me?" “I could do it.” "You… what exactly are you saying, Jimmy?" “Just stating a matter of fact.” "You think that… you're joking with me right now." “No, I could do it. I could make an honest woman out of you. Whether I want to is another story. Just stating a fact. But one thing is for sure. When you leave here, all you’ll be thinking about is if I could and if you would want to let me.” "Would I let you? That's a big question." She replied taking a sip of her drink, almost in an effort to buy herself some time to think. “That’s the question.” "Would you want to make an honest woman out of me?" “If the situation were right, sure, you’re beautiful, on the inside and out. I mean you’re not my type on paper, but you’ve got a pretty enough smile.” He said with a laugh. Laughing, Erin put down her drink. "I'm not your type on paper? What is your type then?" “Blonde for starters. Athletic, bit of a flirt, extroverts. Confident women, and well, those who have good hearts. That’s the most important one.” "Well, can't help with the blonde but I have a good heart. I may not Be as confident as I could be but I am learning." “We can always grow.” "One thing I do know about myself. In fact, I suspect if you talked to Ailynn, she may say the same, is that I have a heart. It's the thing my mom taught me. You can be who ever you were meant to be but it doesn't mean anything of you don't have heart." Jimmy began laughing. “You do have a big heart, I’ll give you that.” Erin laughed, "I suppose everyone does but you know what I meant." He continued to laugh. “60 seconds.” "Until what?" “45 seconds.” "Jimmy, what ….?" “30 seconds.” Looking at him, she couldn't help but smile. Something in his face told her he wasn't going to tell her what he was counting down for. “15 seconds.” "You… are infuriating…" “5 Seconds” She smiled, leant forward and kissed him softly. He kissed her back, then releasing the kiss, he smiled. “60 seconds until you kiss me. And I was right.” Shaking her head, Erin leant back on the sofa, "Do you always have to be right?" “Just when it's about you.” "Am I that easy to read?" “I have one other prediction.” he said as he walked over to the fireplace and started a fire. "And that would be what exactly?" “Well,” he said grabbing a blanket that was folded on a chair. He then sat next to Erin and placed the blanket over their lap. He then put his arm around her shoulders. “What do you think it is?” "I don't want to be presumptuous." “I’ve been doing that all night. Take a guess.” "I would like to think that it was you would like me to stay for little while at least." "Close. It's that we're going to spend all night talking. And in the morning we'll make the decision to try and make this work." "That…. Actually sounds really good." Jimmy then turned to Erin and smiled. He then kissed her deeply. "Of course what happens next, well I'm gonna leave that up to fate." Smiling softly, still feeling the tingle of his kiss on her lips, she leant her head on his shoulder, "It's all we can do. Just see where this takes us." She looked around her almost missing the days, not many weeks ago, where this would have been her domain. Not seeing Gabe on rounds out here, she went through to the office. The door being open already, she tapped on the frame and entered. "Come" Gabe called not looking up as he poured over the research notes he had. "Hey Doc. You wanted to see me. I've...I've got a lot of apologising to do." Looking up at the voice he smiled at his his sister "Not often the ships FO offers an apology to the ships surgeon, sit what's on your mind?" Gabe put his research away and poured her some water as she sat. Ailynn sighed as she sat. "Not here as FO. Well, not completely. I'm not taking to the CMO either exactly." "How you feeling?" "Stiff, but medically I'm okay. It's all the other stuff that's got to me." "Go on" he said sliding the glass across to Alyinn. "Ryelle." "Ah" The missing Dr had been a sore point in Sickbay, the loss of any of the crew is hard, but when someone so close is lost ripples of pain are sent across the ship. "He gave up his life for me. Willingly. I'd saved him. It was dioxotrase gas I think. I gave him a really powerful cocktail to sustain him. I couldn't have it because of the Dextrocardia. It should have killed me and saved him." Gabe sat, he had been on the planet when the autopsy was performed, he had missed most of his duties towards his fallen comrade as he himself was absent. Gabe stood "You're not here for a counselling session sis, so I won't give you one. But, you know as a Dr sometimes things are out of our control, I believe, truly that you were saved by Dr Ryele. This whole month has centered around things we don't nor will ever understand. I think for us it's harder, we don't have the link to our Bajoran heritage and from what I understand there are things here that have decided what and when stuff will happen. You want piece of mind I suggest you visit the temple on DS9, maybe one of the Orbs can help?" Listening to his own words Gabe knew where he would be going. Ailynn nodded. "I will, good idea" "Now, there is something else other than this isn't there?" "An apology for talking down to you back on the planet, and for being a cow as a patient. Wasnt cool." "You did what you needed to do; you were right, my role was to tend to those dying. Ailynn, I saw some horrible stuff happen to you and I'm not ready to relive it just yet" Gabe sat again sipping the water. Ailynn nodded. "There is one more thing." She pulled a small box, and put it into his hand closing it. It was a decision that she had made last night, but had been on her mind for a while "What's this, a promotion?" Gabe stopped and looked at his sister, she was suddenly different. "Open it." Her voice quiet and unusually gentle. "Ok" Gabe opened the box and looked at the contents unsure what to make of it, he pulled the jewelry out. "It was Dad's. I know you don't have anything of his, but I want you to have it. Please." She looked at him. An almost shy look of familial love. "I have his coat, that's all I need. This ear ring doesn't mean to me what it did to him. I only found out who he was recently; this is yours isn't it?" Gabe tried to make sense of even where she had gotten the piece from. "It was given to me by Emmi through mum. I didn’t understand it at all until I don't know when." She sighed. "Ryelle handed me his. He pinned it on my ear just before he died. To me that means just as much. But to you, Maybe a year...a decade from now...you may be ready. Or any children you may have. I don't feel that's mine anymore." She wanted to tell him, tell him about the prophet, about seeing 'her father'. At the last moment she clammed up. "If my having it means something to you, then I'll have it. This has been a very discovering mission for us all I think. One thing?" Gabe said taking the box and closing it putting it into his desk Her brother had his testy moments, but over the time she known him she'd grown yo adore him utterly. "Anything. You know that." "Be honest with me, always. You're my sister above everything else; we are family and this mission has taught me I need my family, we need our family." "I know. And I will. I'll always open up and share. Unless I absolutely can't do it." She rested her hand on his. "Can I ask you for something?" "Well, when you absolutely can't, I'll order you to on medical grounds" Gabe laughed. "Go on?" She laughed. "That is a pissing contest that can wait. Can a girl get a hug from her big brother?" She stood up and held out her arms. "A Bracken wanting a hug! I thought you guys were unbreakable, it must be the Greene influence making you soft" Gabe stood and hugged his slightly taller, slightly younger sister. "Now, tell me where to take Ronnie," Ailynn softened into the firm, familial hug. Smiling gently she shrugged. "Im not that much of an Ice Queen. I like warm hugs." She pulled away, and turned around to check. "As to my cousin, she's into you. Prophet's know why. But I get the impression that she doesn't mind so long as you treat her right. She's come from a place of sadness, show her...show her you...I'm not the one who's dating her 'G'. Take her dancing, or to a concert. There's a venue on DS9." She shrugged "That help?" "G….that better not catch on!" Gabe looked over his glass. “Good luck.” She smiled gently. “Look I’m going to get out of your hair, but seriously, thanks again.” "Just remember, get that counselling appointment every week, doctors orders." *I promise.” Ailynn hugged him briefly, turning and leaving the office, her day only just starting. Can`t let the newbies think that the Chiefs are going soft~ (Reply any) (Posted by Robbie) (Mars – Geneva Memorial – CFO – Lieutenant – Ire Williams - 1920) The sun was slowly dipping over the horizon and he could see the long shadows of night begin to creep across the planet surface. He looked back to the memorial plaque that was the reason he was here. The dedication to the ships, the stations and all the people that had died in the Geneva Disaster. His reached out and ran his fingers across the embossed name of the USS Road Runner before turning back and looking at the setting sun. “Hi mum and dad. Well I am off again so I thought I would come over and have a chat. The Exeter leaves tomorrow and it’s been busy getting ready to depart which is why I have not been over since we got back. Not too sure yet but if I know Trip it`s not going to be boring…..Well what`s new with me……I made Lieutenant can you believe it, me Lieutenant in Starfleet that`s so crazy. I am also a department head in charge of all the flight operations on board the Exeter. I remember those times when I just wanted to fly my fighter and now I am responsible for people. I know I was squadron leader but that always felt an extension of being in the squadron, but this just feels different I can`t put my finger on it but it is.” His fingers moved up to touch his rank insignia. “There is something else. Do you remember that I told you about Greta Smith? Yes, one of those Smiths from that family. Well………we are engaged and will be married soon. Yes, me being responsible and grown up crazy I know. She is a wonderful person, caring, kind once you get past her exterior. She is strong, independent, determined which I think is a Smith trait. She keeps me centered when I am about to bounce off and do something crazy. Tell Jennifer her niece is doing well she`s got promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade.” He paused “I will say high to Aunty from you when I see here again. She`s been busy on a long haul but hopefully we can catch up again when I get back from this mission.” He watched as the last rays of the sun set descended over the horizon as night set in. He turned back to the plaque came to attention. “Mum, Dad.” With that he turned and started to the walk back.
