Lieutenant jg Greta Smith- 0803) Ravok sat there in his chair staring across his desk at Greta, his elbows resting on the arm of his chair and his hands folded together. He twisted his chair side to side slightly. Not saying a word just staring at her. ~why do I feel like I am about to get told off? He has that look of a teacher who just caught students sneaking out.~ she thought to herself. " Lieutenant Smith." He said with a blank expression. "Yes, sir?" She replied with a slight hint of concern in her voice. " Lieutenant Greta Smith. I like it. " He said to her. "Okay… then why are you acting strange, sir?" " I'm acting weird ? No, I'm thinking. This is my thinking face." He responded. "Oh." ~if that's his thinking face then I definitely am in trouble.~ " I'm thinking about what exactly I should use you for. " He sat forward in his chair and scooted closer to his desk. "Remember back when we were both fighter pilots and you were so damned arrogant and bullheaded?" "If you ask Ire.. sorry, Lieutenant Williams, he would say I still was." " I loved that about you, it's your most redeeming quality. That and your karaoke voice." He said with a slight smile. "You mean the voice that can cut through bank vaults on Ferenginar?" " What I liked about you the most is that even when you were a pilot you always had to take the big shots, I'm sure your flight officer wasn't happy but you didn't care. The point I'm trying to make is this. You are not afraid to take those shots. You don't second guess yourself. " He remarked. "Thank you sir. I suppose it comes from being a Scottish warrior woman. At least that's what I've been told." She replied smiling. " Lieutenant what I need is someone who I not only trust, but I know is capable of handling Tactical duties on the bridge. I want you in the regular rotation at that station. I know I've been leaving you in limbo but I had to make sure and after those simulations last week I am more than confident that you are the perfect officer for the job. " Ravok said. Raising an eyebrow, Greta paused for a moment. It took her a second to realise that she wasn't in trouble and that he was offering her a good position on the bridge. "Sir, I… don't know what to say." " I take that as an acceptance of the role?" "Well, I'd be a fool to say no." " Yes, yes you would." He smiled. "Okay. I haven't pulled bridge duty before. I'll admit to being a little …. Not scared but nervous. " " During your time on the bridge you will be with me . I am going to walk you through everything. It's rather boring, but boring is good. " Ravok said. "Permission to speak freely?" She asked Ravok raised his eyebrow and nodded his head. " Go on." "I have to ask. Why me? After what happened on the surface of that planet when Ire and the others were taken, I honestly had resigned myself to forever counting torpedoes. It wasn't my finest moment by any means. I've been going to the counselling sessions and I have been working myself on the holodeck. I just… this promotion as well. I don't deserve it." Ravok took a deep breath. " We aren't here to discuss your personal feelings about your promotion. Our captain feels as though you deserve your promotion and I support his decisions. It's not my place to dispute them. If you have a problem with the pips on your chest take it up with him or a Counselor. We are here to discuss your role within the department. Is that understood Lieutenant?" Ravok asked her. "I don't have a problem, just confused. But yes sir. I understand. " " I'm not going to go easy on you and I wont blow the proverbial smoke up your a$&. I know you're ready for the role I am assigning you, but if you feel as though you aren't then you have no place in my department. So I hope you find it within yourself to get your spine back and start being the Greta Smith I know from the battle of the Kuiper belt and Wolf 359...because that's who I need." Ravok said with a harsh tone, trying to get through to her. "Oh she's still there. I want this chance to redeem and prove myself. " Ravok nodded his head. " Good Lieutenant " "Sir, you can believe me. I will not let you down. I respect the fact that you have put this trust in me." " Just don't make my faith misplaced. You are dismissed. Lieutenant Smith." Ravok said to her. His next appointment was with Ensign More. Standing, Greta nodded. "I wouldn't do that. You can count on me, Sir. " Turning, she left the room and stopped in the corridor. ~Bridge duty. This should be interesting.~ (Reply none) (Posted by Rob and Jackie) (USS Exeter - Deck 13 - Ops office - aCOO - Ensign (sg) Paul Sleeford 09:00) Sitting in what he now considered his office Paul read the latest stack of PADDs, he'd been in the post of acting Chief of Operations management for nearly a month now, while he was still finding his feet, he'd found that the department was staffed by some experienced personnel. Reading the latest reports on the engineering upgrades and the maintenance schedules he knew there would be limited time to visit the station. During the time since leaving DS9 he'd spent time in the gym, working on his leg strength, while no longer in security, he knew that in the event of a hostile take over every man who could function would count. Along with spending time with Katie he'd been busy. The mug of coffee on the desk had long gone cold while he'd been reading. Sitting back in the chair rolling his neck to loosen the muscles he checked his time, he had his weekly session with the counsellor, if these carried on then they'd end up swapping recipes for cupcakes, most of the stuff about his injury and guilt had been dealt with weeks ago. hearing a sound that broke through his thought had Paul looked up, seeing Ensign Paige standing there. "Rylee, please sit. What can i do for you?" NRPG - I can add more to this later (Reply Paige) (Posted by Alistair) (USS Exeter - Main Shuttlebay - SFI Agent, Lt. Commander Tyko Nix - 0900) It had been a few months since Lt. Commander Tyko Nix had set foot on the USS Exeter. He honestly thought he would never see the inside of that shop again. It was his brief time on the Exeter that he had to blow his cover of almost five years just to prevent himself from being unfairly accused by some of the Exeter security officers. Granted Nix had was a bit of an agitator, but it was not often that his agitating ability got people to threaten to stab him when he was pretending to be a disgruntled, concussed, refugee. It was also his time on the Exeter that he had spent some time imprisoned with the CMO Gave Vesper and the CFO Ire Williams. Both of them approached imprisonment differently, and he was sure that he had probably rubbed both of them the wrong way with his reluctance to lead a prison break. As he walked around the Main Shuttlebay, it seemed a lot different then the last time he was there. It was not a triage center filled with refugees. Rather this time it seemed more normal. He noticed a familiar face. "Oh Ire, good to see you." Nix said as he approached the half bajoran helmsman. "Even as a full lieutenant, looks like they still have you doing the grunt work." (Reply Ire) Nix gave the officer a hand shake and smiled. "So it seems the Captain was quick to promote his buddies huh?" (Reply Ire) "Oh you know, the moment they make him a captain, his childhood best friend becomes a full commander, and his Fighter Wing right and left hands become Lieutenant Senior Grades. Just like that." Nix made a snapping movement with his fingers. "Not that you don't deserve it, but don't you think it's a little quick?" (reply Ire) (reply Ire) (posted by Will) (USS Exeter - Deck 13 - Ops office - Ensign Rylee Page - 09:03) Standing at the door of the OPS office, Rylee felt a sudden attempt of nerves. She had been cleared to return to duty and, having spent time relaxing and just talking with the counsellor and Zot, she had felt better. Now, she felt nervous. Knocking softly on the door, she waited a moment. "Rylee, please sit. What can i do for you?" Sleeford said. Taking a seat opposite him, she handed him a PADD. "I've been cleared for duty. " (Reply Sleeford) "I'm okay. Won't lie, but nervous. It's been a long road but at least I can get my socks on now in under 5 minutes." She replied with a smile. We all have to do our bit to get us ready to depart and it`s nice to get the opportunity to fly other craft in the Exeter`s inventory.” Ire shook Nix`s hand. "So it seems the Captain was quick to promote his buddies huh?" “Sir?” "Oh you know, the moment they make him a captain, his childhood best friend becomes a full commander, and his Fighter Wing right and left hands become Lieutenant Senior Grades. It's been a long road but at least I can get my socks on now in under 5 minutes." She replied with a smile. Laughing Paul looked at the young woman across the desk, the hair shorter then he remembered, due to the surgery. "I'd like to start back as soon as possible. Get back into things. Some of the equipment she had requested was for a special project that she wanted to start with her team. Having gotten to know them a lot better, she was excited for them to run with this. But she was more excited for Adala. Having spent some time with her deputy, she knew that the officer was now ready for more responsibilities and, as the last crate was loaded onto the transporter pad, ready to go to the Exeter, she sighed happily. ~this could be something amazing. If we can get it to work.~ she thought to herself. (Reply Adala) Turning, Erin smiled and nodded an hello to the young woman. "Good morning, Ensign Michaels. Glad you could join me. I have something I need to discuss with you." (Reply Adala) Walking to one side of the supply storage area, Erin looked at her, "I have a project that I would like for you to take the lead on." (Reply Adala) "Well, i know this might be a little out of your wheelhouse but i have faith that you can run with this. We are going to attempt to create a science version of the EMH." (Reply Adala) "It's something i have been thinking about for a while now. Basically, it would be a back up for us. Just like the EMH is a back up for the medical bods." (Reply Adala) "I'm going to hold a briefing later today, 1500 hours. It's a long running project. Doesn't have to be finished right away. Adala, there is no-one else I would trust with this. Would you take the lead?" (Reply Adala) (Reply Adala) (Posted by Jackie) (Starbase Freedom - Supplies store – Asst. Erin smiled and nodded an hello to the young woman. "Good morning, Ensign Michaels. Glad you could join me. I have something I need to discuss with you." "What is it?" Adala looked around her at the incoming supplies as she fell in step beside Erin, they moved through the storage area as Erin continued. "I have a project that I would like for you to take the lead on." "You want me to lead one of your projects?" She was surprised, she'd spent time in the background since recovering from her accident, still mentally kicking herself for not being where she should have been. Adala listened as Erin continued to explain the project to her. "Well, I know this might be a little out of your wheelhouse but I have faith that you can run with this. We are going to attempt to create a science version of the EMH." She stopped and looked at Erin, "You want me to do ... what?" her tone teasing as she fought a laugh. "It's something I have been thinking about for a while now. Basically, it would be a back-up for us. Just like the EMH is a back up for the medical bods." She laughed now. "I see ... you want to replace me next time I fall off a cliff?" She shook her head. "Probably a good idea and punish me at the same time by making me put it together?" Her tone carried with it a hint of laughter. She knew what her boss meant and knew she was serious. Erin continued "I'm going to hold a briefing later today, 1500 hours. It's a long running project. Doesn't have to be finished right away. Adala, there is no-one else I would trust with this. Would you take the lead?" "Do I ever, Of course I will take the lead. When have I ever turned you down? Commander Tyko Nix - 1000) As Nix continued making his rounds around the Exeter he was doing his best to keep himself busy and not really making small talk with passerbys. Mainly he didn't want anyone asking about his mission, which was classified and frankly nobody's business. But the truth of the matter was, if what he was investigating was true, the Federation was at risk. As he passed by the OPS Office he decided to stop by the office of an "old friend." He and Ensign Sleeford did not really see eye to eye in their brief encounter on the Exeter, but Paul seemed to be doing alright for himself. "Knock knock," Nix proclaimed as he entered the OPS office. "Hope you don't mind a small visit." (reply Sleeford) "I heard from the rumor mill that after we got to Deep Space Nine the captain gave you some new digs. How has the transition been?" (reply Sleeford) Nix nodded, "I mean I guess all it cost you was an arm and a leg, well just the leg anyways." (reply Sleeford) "Do you find it dull, the transition, I mean you were a marine, got hurt, tactical officer, got hurt, I guess it's safer here." (reply Sleeford) (reply Sleeford) (posted by Will) (USS Exeter - OPS Office - COO Ensign (sg) Paul Sleeford - 10:05) Sleeford sat at the desk and took a swig of cold coffee, his third mug this evening, picking up the top PADD he began to read yet another report, one of the science teams wanted a time slot for the ultra high range telescope to study a quasar in the nearby system. Pressing his thumb to action the request he sighed and picked up another. Hearing someone enter he looked up to see who his visitor was, repressing a groan, Sleeford smiled. "Knock knock," Nix proclaimed as he entered the OPS office. "Hope you don't mind a small visit." "Commander Tyko, pleasure to see you as always, what can i do for you?" "I heard from the rumor mill that after we got to Deep Space Nine the captain gave you some new digs. How has the transition been?" "Well as your no doubt aware commander, every cadet has to do rotation through all the departments in the first two years in the academy. So to answer your question, not too bad. More paperwork then i guessed but hey, being Chief isn;t all fun" Nix nodded, "I mean I guess all it cost you was an arm and a leg, well just the leg anyways." Taking a deep breath Sleeford looked into the mans face, oO Don;t let him wind you up, he's here to make you mad and angry, dont play his game Oo "You know how it is, dodge left, when you should dodge right, could have been worse, could have been my face, then i'd have ost my charming good looks" "Do you find it dull, the transition, I mean you were a marine, got hurt, tactical officer, got hurt, I guess it's safer here." Biting his tongue Sleeford looked around the room, "To be honest commander, i'm on deck 13, half way down the saucer, in the middle if rghw deck, no one and i mean no one is going to shoot me here, unless i mess up their holodeck time. As for transitioning it could have been worse, they could have placed a folded flag in my mother's hands. Now if theres nothing else commander, I have work to do, even if you don;t seem to have. " AFter Tyko left Sleefors took a deep breath, oO That man is a bigger asrehole the Vespers and thats saying much. This had been his third rotation and he was getting into the flow. He saw the Chief usher his team into place and begin to move the containers towards the Broken Bow. “Chief is there anywhere I can grab a drink while you load?” “Yes sir up by the observation booth.” “Great thanks.” “Okay Sir. We should be done shortly.” With a polite nod Ire headed for the access doors that would lead him up to the observation booth. He quickly went up the small staircase and entered the room. Ire spied the replicator on the wall at the opposite end and headed for it. “Lady Grey tea hot.” The replicator whined, and his tea appeared. He took it and smiled as he inhaled deeply. Striding into the shuttle bay, Jordan stood and watched the scene around him. Knowing that these supplies were due to go the Exeter, he sighed. "Excuse me, Chief. Where's the pilot?" Following the man's gaze, he caught sight of the man in the observation booth. "Thanks." He straightened his uniform, took a deep breath and walked into the booth, smirking very slightly as the door closed behind him. "Coffee, black." He took the cup from the replicator and stood off to one side. “Hallo.” "Your the pilot I believe. " “Yes I am. Marine?” "Yes, Sir. Marine through and through. Just blowing through. Not stopping. Was hoping to catch a minute with someone but she's busy." “Ow I am sorry. Things are very busy at the moment.” "So it seems. You're on the Exeter right?" Jordan asked, sipping his coffee slowly as he watched the man. “Yes I am part of the flight crew.” "Yes, I've heard about you. Got yourself a nice fiancee from what I hear. " He paused as he sipped his tea. “Yes I am very lucky, she is a wonderful person.” Jordan smiled, "shooting above her station is she or are you?" Ire put down his drink and looked at Jordan. “I think you should be careful what you say, friend. You don't know what you are talking about.” Chuckling, Jordan put down his cup. "What if I do, friend. You don't have any clue who you are talking to here do you?" “You don't know who you are talking to.” "I know you. Lieutenant Ire Williams. You fly boys are all the same. All mouth and no balls to stand behind." He paused, thrown by the statement. ~This guy is pushing. Be careful~ “This was not some random chance meeting?” "Ding ding, we have a winner!" “Who are you?” "First Lieutenant Jordan Smith." Ire took a moment to understand what Jordan had said. “As in one of those Smiths?” "One of those Smith's? Oh buddy, you need to watch how you say that." “Your Greta`s brother?” "And the penny finally drops." “Good to meet you.” "And you are the guy doing my sister." He said flatly, putting his cup down and crossing his arms across his chest. "My baby sister." “Yes I am in love with your sister.” Shaking his head, "love? Really? What exactly could you, a fly boy, offer my baby sister? She's… been through a lot. She's vulnerable and I swore to our father I would look after her." “She is a lot tougher than you now. I have seen her lead a squadron into battle knowing the odds of survival were non existence without a moment's hesitation. I have personally been beside her in combat. She doesn't need me, you or any one to look after her. She is not a child, she is an adult and can take care of herself.” "Then, if she doesn't need me or you, why is it that every damn conversation I have with her ends up about you. Oh Ire said this… ire cooked this amazing meal. Frankly, now I have met you, I don't see it." “You are not the only one.” "I don't understand. What is it about you? Because, from where I am standing, I don't see it. I've heard the rumours about you. The pilot who has had more than his fair share of mishaps…" “What you think because you read some report or heard rumours about how I lost two fighters and had a third blow up around him that you know me. That you can stand here and judge me. She means everything to me. I would lay down my life for her and would have done on numerous occasions.” He stepped closer. “What do you want from me? Jordan. I love you sister and she loves me. I don't know why out of all the people on Mars she chose me but I thank the Prophets every day that she did because to her my life is a better place than it ever has been before. If you can't see that she is happy and aren't happy for her then I am sorry for you.” A smile crept over his face as he looked back into Ire's eye and laughed. “What.” "That's what I wanted to see. That. Now I understand. " “And that is.” "I'm sorry for all that. Our dad, before he passed, made me promise to check out any guy she chose to be with. He also told me to give them a hard time to see if they would stand up for themselves and fight back." “I can understand that. But still.” He held out his hand and, with a grin, said, "welcome to the family, Ire. You are going to need all the luck of those prophets of yours to keep up with that wrecking ball of a sister of mine." “She is not as bad as you think.” "There is one thing I do need to do though." He said, reaching into his pocket. “Which is?” Jordan pulled out a small pocket watch. Handing it to Ire, he spoke softly, "She doesn't know about this. Our dad gave me this just before he died and told me to give it to the man she chose to be with. So, by rights, this is yours." “Thank you, but I can't take it not right now. I have not married Greta yet. It would be wrong for me to take something that means so much to you before then.” ~Just in case something happened~ "I can respect that." He replied, putting the watch back in his pocket. "However, when you do marry my sister, it becomes yours." “I can accept that.” "Good. Because you really don't have a choice in the matter." “By the way have you seen Greta since you arrived?” "Not had a chance. We're shipping off soon to parts unknown. Spoken to her but not seen her. Shame really because it would have been nice but, marine life is what it is." He paused for a moment thinking something through. “Getting you on board might be a problem. Security is tight due to us shoving off but I might be able to get her onto the station for a bit? But I would have to ask her boss.” "Look, I'm leaving in an hour. Do me one favour, fly boy." “Of course.” "Look after my sister. She's pig headed when she wants to be and needs someone to keep her level headed. You seem like a good guy. Take care of her. Just no getting her pregnant until after the wedding, understand?" He replied with a wink. “I will tell her you said hello and I understand.” "Good. Now, tell me something, does she still have a stuffed penguin that she sleeps with?" “I have not seen a stuffed penguin but I am definitely going to ask her about it.” "Oh buddy, you and I have a lot to talk about. " Syruk said, as he analyzed the young girl's painting. He had taken his time of starbase freedom to volunteer at the recreation center. To assist children in group painting lessons. " I mean do you like it ?" She asked, looking up at him. He knelt down next to her. " It's one of my favorites " He whispered to her and patted her on the back. " Does this not meet the parameters of painting an image that means something to us ?" Sytuk examined the image. " Its uh...Its a very good depiction of a DNA " Jydak nodded his head. " Being that both of parents are geneticists, I decided to paint double-stranded molecules of nucleic acids...DNA. Although I can't accurately display the hydrogen bonds between G-C and A-T base pairs. I do believe I have captured the structural accuracy of the double helix." The child explained. Sytuk knelt down to the boys level. " I was looking for something that meant more to you in here " He said pointing to the boys heart. Jydak looked at him and raised an eyebrow. " Did you want me to paint a stream? A cloud ? Or perhaps a puppy? " The boy asked with arrogance in his voice. Sytuk lowered his head. " No" He said, his shaking head. Jydak pointed to his heart. "In here is blood being pumped around my body by the center of my cardiovascular system. There isn't any feelings or emotions here." Sytuk looked at the boy. " Very well Jydak. Your painting is good. I know I am.:: :: Do you have to leave us today?:: Sytuk looked at her and gently squeezed her hand. :: Yes, but I will stay in contact with you.:: Helena smiled and gave him a hug. :: Send me paintings?:: He placed an arm around the girl and closed his eyes. " I promise" he said to her and pulled away. She looked at him with tears in her eyes. Sytuk held the girls hand up and touched her palm with one of his fingers. :: I want you to have something very special to me. :: He said telepathically as images of the important people in his life flashed from his mind and into hers. The images and feelings ended with the very first day he met Helena. :: I have given you my friendship. He didn’t know if that was automatic, triggered when they hailed or if it was a thought by the person behind the controls, but either way it was a welcome gesture. He had never actually flown before with his wife as a crew member. Their twenty plus years of marriage had allowed them to overcome what he was sure would have been procedural differences between Romulan Imperial and Starfleet protocols. They comfortably settled into him as the pilot and her in the Operations console and some minor inflight repairs. He had to admit, she was a fine engineer. An appreciation he did not acquire until this very flight, seeing her use all her skills to keep this old bird flying. “You said don’t shut everything down?” He heard Jan inquire from the aft compartment. “Correct.” He said raising his voice to be heard in the aft compartment. “If you shut down the Singularity Drive, bad things happen.” Suddenly the blonde woman appeared into his field of view, “I know. I just like to see my elven prince riled up,” she said with a grin. “I have the singularity running at minimal power, just enough to keep the lights on, run the security system you insist on running and keep the engine warm.” The pair exited the craft carrying little more than their credentials. They walked on the appropriate path, away from the egress points for the craft coming in. Both looked for their contact; it was he who spotted him first. “Over there, to the right.” Tovus said. Ravok was scanning the area and spotted Keira's mother and father “Jolan Tru, young man.” Tovus replied. Ravok folded his arms behind his back and lowered his head to her father once he approached them. "Shaoi kon" Ravok said to her father using the formal greeting of an inferior to a superior. He then turned to her mother and nodded his head. " Hello" he said to her, knowing this woman wasn't particularly fond of him. He still kept a level of respect for her. " How was your flight?" After looking at her husband she replied, “Our flight was excellent. Thank you for asking.” Ravok smiled " Well that's good to hear, If you follow me this way I have all of your security clearances ready to go. " He said motioning to a security terminal for proper check in. He stood to the side as each of them placed their hand on the screen. Jan was the first to place her hand on the biometric scanner. [Evasdottir, January - Starfleet, Commander (Retired) Access granted.] Tovus hesitated, but Jan nudged his elbow toward the scanner. Knowing that his refusal to do so would cause more problems than if Starfleet still had a dossier on any former Romulan Officer. The Romulan man reluctantly did so. The kiosk scanned him for three seconds. “Does it usually take this long?” He inquired. “It does if it doesn’t know who you are.” Jan said. The machine then showed a registration screen. With his wife’s help the registration took a few seconds. " As family of a senior officer you will have family VIP status until we disembark. " Ravok noted. “Understood.” Tovus said. " I'm sure you will be most impressed with the amenities Starbase freedom has to offer. " He said with smile. “Neither of us have seen a starbase in over 20 years, so even a standard one would be impressive.” Jan said. “You are sure Keira is unaware that we have arrived?” Tovus asked. " No Sir , Lieutenant Commander Merek is still unaware of your arrival. If you follow me I'll take you to her present location." He replied. The pair looked at eachother then spoke nearly in unison. “She made Lieutenant Commander?” Ravok stopped walking and looked at them both " You seriously didn't know?" ~ Damnit Keira ~ “No,” Jan said, “she did not inform us.” " Well good news and I'm sure it's something that she wanted to surprise you with." Ravok stated as he tried covering for his girlfriend's lack of communication with her parents . “Of course you’re right it is good news.” Tovus said. “More to celebrate.” Jan said almost distantly. ~That raises the chances, from 63% to 87%. I’ll have to make a swing by the Time Bureau before we leave and get a new download of the current time line.~ Ravok gestured for them to follow him once more. (Reply None) (Posted by Todd and Rob) ( npcs Tovus Merek & January Evasdottir-Merek) (Starbase Freedom – Planetside Observation Lounge – 2O/CEO – Lt. Cmdr. Keira Merek & CTO/3O Lieutenant Ravok Shara & Tovus Merek & January Evasdottir - Merek - 1212) Keira sat slightly amused at the passing ships and people. Her patiently waiting yielded results very quickly. “Oh, hey! You’re here finally. So what’s this big surprise….” Keira hadn’t even fully formed the question before it was answered. Her parents emerged around the corner following closely behind Ravok. Ravok stepped to the side. “How did you?” Keira asked, stunned.“That was you in the window.” “Halló dóttir, litli álfur minn” {Icelandic: Hello daughter, my little elf} Jan said. “To answer your question, one call with some amazing timing from Ravok, several days of repairs of my courier shuttle from your mother and several more days of piloting at warp to this edge of the alpha quadrant, ” Tovus explained. “We had traded the part we needed to get the shuttle up and running again just recently, but the idea was all Ravok’s.” Jan gave credit where it was due. “Don’t get me wrong I am very pleased to see you both. Had I known this was possible I might have tried to arrange it sooner,” Keira admitted. " It was no problem arranging for them to come here."Ravok said. “Don’t be so humble, khnai'ru rhissiuy,” {R: Thank you}Keira said sincerely. " Not being humble just being honest " He smirked. Keira waived to the serving staff who promptly appeared eager to actually help them. “Can I get you started on anything? Drinks?” the Trill waiter asked. " Water for me." He looked at them. "We set out at 1800. Need to be clear minded for all the necessary tactical and security procedures. But don't hold back on my account." “Terran ale.” Tovus ordered, he knew that simple human libations would not put any kind of damper on his reflexes due to his Romulan metabolism. “Refill on the lemonade please.” Keira said. “I’ll have a root beer.” Jan said. Once their drinks arrived they made their way to an open table. Ravok waited for everyone to sit before he did. After everyone was seated Tovus spoke. “Last time you contacted us, I noticed your iris was white, and now I see that has not changed. Do you plan on keeping this eye? Imperial doctors likely would have likely cloned a replacement.” " The eye, is working great, so much in fact that I have opted out of a more esthetically pleasing upgrade." Ravok replied to the attempt at small talk. He wanted to get to the part he invited them here for. It may have been a little selfish on his behalf , but Keira finally got to see her parents. “Now that Keira has been promoted, and you’ve accepted a third officer position are we going to see another pip in your future?” Jan asked. ~Bringing the chances of my daughter’s demise from the eighties into the mid nineties..~ Ravok took a drink of his water. " No not anytime soon. It's common knowledge that Brilliant Engineers are rewarded with rank , while Brilliant tactical officers are simply doing their job. " Ravok smiled. " I'm just happy to be a Lieutenant " “In the Empire you both would still be Uhlans trying to keep the Commander’s eye off of you, for fear they would see your ambition as a threat.” Tovus recalled his time in the Imperial Navy. “Well, we aren’t, we’re in Starfleet. Our Captain trusts us.” She countered her father, then turned her attention to her mother,“ and he is a Lieutenant that held down two department head positions during a tough mission.” Keira offered. ~and almost died in the process..~ “Too early to get your food orders?” The waiter cut in with the precision of a surgeon. “I’ll have the burger, medium. Lettuce, tomato, pickles. French fries, ketchup and mustard on the side.” Jan started without missing a beat. ~Damn, I was going to ask for the burger. Time to rethink.~ Keira thought. “Excellent choice. For you, sir?” the waiter asked. “How are your Romulan dishes?” Tovus asked. “Replicated, unfortunately.” the waiter’s response put a near frown on the elder Romulan’s face. “I don’t blame you, I tell people all the time that replicated food tastes different, no one believes me.” Keira said in response. “What is your closest approximation?” Tovus inquired. “Babe, you are not going to try anything else? You've come lightyears to a Federation Starbase with representatives from literally hundreds of worlds and you aren’t going to try something new?” Jan asked. “Says the lady who got the burger.” Keira quipped. “In my defense,” Jan said, “it’s been fifteen years since I had a proper burger. Honey are you wanting something like that spicy stuff you cook when it’s your turn?” “Yes.” Tovus said. “Closest it reminds me of is Indian food. Maybe chicken or pork curry? Extra spicy and bring some naan with it too?” Jan offered. ~Crap, Ravok is going to insist on ordering last and it’s almost my turn.~ “I will take what she said.” Tovus answered. “Very good, sir.” “For you Lieutenant?” " Caesar Salad " Ravok ordered. ~Oops got that wrong.~ Keira thought. “Certainly. For you, Commander?” ~Think quickly.~ “I’ll have the zuppa toscana, with bread and a side salad.” Keira answered. “Your dressing choice?” “No dressing.” she answered. Keira remembered the looks wait staff on Earth used to give her ordering that way. Maybe Trill were more used to being accommodating. It wasn't long before their orders arrived. Ravok didn't know the right time to ask. According to custom he would ask her father and seek his approval only. Then Tovus would take the necessary time to evaluate Ravok's family and personal position within the Romulan caste system, but Ravok knew time was precious. " I know this is sudden and you are just getting here, but there is something I must ask of you...both of you" “Absolutely. We know how much you mean to our daughter.” Tovus said before sampling the Earth cuisine before him. A tentative bite before he proclaimed it adequate. Jan had already taken a chunk out of the burger, and seemed to be in some level of heaven. Keira cautiously tried the soup. ~This isn’t replicated.~ Keira thought before continuing. " Keira has been supportive of me and my child. You two have raised her to be a brilliant woman and she is one of the finest people I have ever known…" He drew a breath. Jan took a big swig of root beer between bites. " I want to ask you for permission to join our families, unite our clans into one." Ravok said. The human woman’s eyes widened, she was so surprised at Ravok’s question she had just barely managed to avert her head and get a hand up before spitting out a mouthful of bubbly liquid, “You what?!” She managed to blurt out before wiping her face and hand off with the grey cloth table napkin. ~ Eighty-nine.~ “Mom, let him finish before you object.” Keira defended him. The elder Romulan man put down his cutlery dabbed the corners of his mouth with his own dry napkin. “You, young man, now have my complete attention. Your relationship has been, I feel, a good influence on Keira being with a nice Romulan man who follows tradition. Following tradition, what does an aristocratic family such as the Mereks hope to gain from aligning with an agricultural one? " I am aware that the Shara's were farmers, but we are not anymore. We...I mean I am a Starfleet Officer. If I wanted to stick to tradition I would mention the fact that the Shara's were one of the ship clans that colonized Romulus, the country of Calanistra itself was named for one of my ancestors. We may not have been high born northerners but our grains filled the bellies of many of the empire's finest soldiers...Even the soldiers of Clan Merek." Ravok added. “You do know your history young man. I do appreciate you coming to me with this, in the traditional way.” Tovus started. ~History, maybe, but does he know his own future?~ “Don’t I get a say in this?” Jan started. “By tradition, your role is to advise me, but the call is mine.” Tovus said matter of factly. “Babe, there is no Empire anymore none of that matters.” Jan tried to reason. “Do you have anything to add, mom? You haven’t come right out and said it, but you’ve made it perfectly clear you were against us from the beginning. Do you have any reason why?” Keira asked. “I...well..” Jan stammered a bit. “Any reason at all? You don’t like his hair? His mother dresses him funny? Anything?” Keira asked, her questions bordering on the ludicrous showing that is what she thought of her mother’s objection. “Enough. You’ve made your point, paenhe,” {Romulan: Daughter} he said holding his hand up. “My a'rhea {R: dear; term of affection} he has made his request in the traditional way.” “But..” Jan protested. “He has made his request, and now we have one lunar cycle to accept or reject his offer.” Tovus said. “One lunar cycle? Which moon? Metis orbits Jupiter in just over six hours….” Keira said, her arguments still bordering on the ridiculous. Ravok looked at Keira. " Your father will let us know, it's not like we asked to do it today." “Right. At least he heard you out, right?” Keira agreed with Ravok.~It could have been worse.~ Ravok looked at her. He felt something crazy building inside of him. Something he felt plenty of times in the fighter wing. It was a feeling he felt only in the heart of battle. He looked at them. Ravok's leg was jumping slightly under the table. He took a deep breath, he couldn't hold it anymore. He was tired of this Romulan etiquette, the entire pomp and circumstance of it all. He wasn't raised this way. All he knew of Romulan culture he learned from reading files upon files of data. His leg stopped jumping and he shot up from his seat. " Tovus of clan Merek, I am Ravok of the house of Kal'Beroth. I am going to marry your daughter. What I gave you was a courtesy. An honor of your heritage, not mine. " Ravok said sternly as he pointed his finger down on the table. " I love your daughter. You either accept that or you don't but either way I plan on joining our hearts." Ravok said, staring Tovus directly in the eyes. This outburst caught the attention of several tables, who watched and stared silently. Tovus returned Ravok’s gaze. He locked eyes with him silently for several seconds. “If my father were alive he would have turned you down right here for an outburst like that.” “It’s settled then…” Jan said. “However, I am not my father,” Tovus corrected her. “For what it’s worth, you have my blessing.” “WHAT!?” Keira and Jan said simultaneously. Some of the tables that were staring began politely clapping in encouragement. “How?” Jan asked. “My love,” Tovus began quietly. “The outburst, while impatient, clearly shows the man loves our daughter. Based on that, Keira’s impassioned speech earlier when they called from Earth the region called “Alaska” in the planet’s North means that she clearly loves him, and the fact that we have no control over their day to day. I believe that with or without our blessing they would go through with it anyway. If they will go through with it without us, it is better if we are on good terms.” Keira looked to Ravok with a smile filled with excitement. She squeezed his hand. “Khnai'ru rhissiuy, Eneh.” {R: (Formal) Thank you, Father) Keira said. Ravok was nearly speechless. " What?..." He wasn't expecting his reaction to be so...agreeable. “Unless I can get a world shattering reason why I shouldn’t” Tovus stated, considering the matter almost closed, he returned to his meal. Ravok looked at her mother. " Well since we are all being open and honest. Do you want to state here and now what your issue with me is ? Did you want your daughter to find a good terran man or woman?" “No, don’t be so…..I’m not bigotted, Ravok.” Jan answered. " I don't get it. I have been respectful To her , you and him. I could leave the table now and she will tell you. I have been patient and understanding." Ravok added. “Would you believe me if I told you, even retired, I still know things that you aren’t privy to know?” Jan started, her tone lowered. She made sure they weren’t being watched before continuing. Ravok raised his brow and made a sigh of frustration. “Even Keira’s clearance isn’t high enough. Hell, your Captain, they would tread carefully before telling him, and then only if it was mission specific that he needed to know..” Jan corrected. “What are you saying, mom?” Keira asked. " If this about my family's Tal Shiar connections, that information is well known my biological mother was an agent, and so was my fathers brother. I however am not." Ravok said. " You can trust me." “No, nothing like that. Tovus was from a prominent family in the Empire, I have no problem with Romulans or their past.” Jan said. “Spit it out, mom.” Keira demanded. “How old do I look, Ravok?” She asked. Ravok shrugged his shoulders. " I don't know humans age faster." “Humor me.” Jan encouraged. " Fine, taking into account Keira's age...mid to late 40's but you look good for your age if that's the case. " “Which would put my birth somewhere around 2396, right?” Jan agreed. “What if I told you I was born in the early 23nd Century, and through an accident was flung into our future?” Ravoks eyes widened. " That's ...interesting." “I’ve never been told of this.” Tovus said. “Keep your voice down.” Jan snapped. Ravok leaned slightly over the table. " Temporal incursion?" He asked. “Yes, I am a temporal incursion. It was, or will be popular in the future to place those time displaced individuals in service into the Bureau of Temporal Investigations, since they already know of time travel and have intimate knowledge of various times and places because they are from there.” Jan explained. Ravok looked at Keira he could see the confusion in her eyes. “Mom, you retired from Starfleet…” Keira protested. “I did, my little elf, under protest from Captain Walker. Once it was finalised I was told to:” she explained, “Stay out of history’s way.” “What does that have to do with us?” Keira asked. “Before I left, I got a peek at what is to come,”Jan explained. “one possible future.” "Do we have ugly kids or something?" Ravok asked with a slight laugh. “Was Cleopatra beautiful? Most texts say she was, but really she wasn’t conventionally attractive, because these kinds of things generally aren’t recorded. It gets the dates, major events, but it glosses over some details like generally what people look like..” as Jan spoke it was clear where Keira got her rambling from. “Mom…” Keira said in an attempt to put her back on topic. “I saw one possible future where very bad things, that I can’t get into, happen. Without going into the details and violating the Temporal Prime Directive. Something very bad can happen. The events leading up to it, I’ve been following. One of the major factors in it is your relationship.” Jan said. “That’s not possible.” Keira said. “Baseline probability of this event is thirty percent. Ravok’s mission in the Kuiper belt brought it up to forty. Your relationship, and it existing, brought it up to around eighty.” Jan explained. " Brought what up to 80 percent?" Ravok asked. “The probability of this BAD event happening.” Jan answered simply. Ravok looked down at the table. " If you know something that puts the life of Keira in danger then you have a direct obligation as her mother to tell her. " “Do I?” She countered, ”Part of the Command Exam is being able to send your friends, coworkers and officers under your command to certain death for the good of your ship or the galaxy. It’s part of the Prime Directive.” “Do I even know you?” Keira asked. “That’s why I’ve been against this from the beginning, once I learned your name I remembered it from that peek at the time line.” She explained to Ravok. “ The one biggest variable was your relationship with my daughter. I reasoned if I could discourage that, the probability of this terrible event would decrease dramatically. You’d be apart, but alive.” “So even if we stay together there is no certainty that this bad event will happen?” Keira asked. “Time is always in flux my little elf. Having a series of fixed points is not something that is maintainable. There has to be room for freewill and the Kirk and Janeway factors.” She tried consoling her daughter. Ravok sat there while they talked but could hardly contain himself. " Friends...coworkers...those under your command...prime directive. " He said, tapping fingers on the table. " How about Daughter? Is the prime directive above that? You know what, don't answer that. Because nothing you can say will be able to justify not giving your daughter peace of mind. But I am willing to bet that doesn't bother you one bit. " “ I love my daughter. What I do is for her.” Jan responded. " Oh come on for over a year you have given her grief about me , caused stress in her life, in our lives. I bent over backwards to gain your respect, and you can't even do the same for her, your daughter of all people." Ravok said, feeling his anger rise and could sense he was treading on thin ice. “I don’t think you understand what they can do to me, to us.” Jan warned. “Direct manipulation would be noticed. History says I already died. What if they decide to permanently retire me? Go back to before this life they set up for me to live comfortably? Destroy my colony ship before we made it to Carraya? No me, means no Keira. No me, means the Carraya penal colony dies of starvation. I myself walk a thin line. My daughter’s life and happiness means everything to me. One wrong move, a change that can be noticed they could choose to end it.” He looked to Keira. " This is between you two . But no matter how she feels or what she knows. I'm not leaving " Ravok said and squeezed her hand. At that moment the retired Commander of the Time Bureau thought about using the portable neurolytic generator she had with her. Make the whole table forget what she had said, go back to square one. It would certainly be the safer option. Her practiced eye watched for agents converging on their position ready to force the decision for her. None came. At the moment she was unsure. ~How many times have I done this?~ “Father is right, we’ll do this with you, or without you.” Keira said, determinedly. “Since you are going to do this, without me,” Jan said. “I don’t want to sully what should be a happy reunion any further.” “And?” Keira asked. “Just promise me you’ll watch out. Don’t get complacent, watch out for each other. There is still a chance that everything will be OK, small as it is.” Jan pleaded. " How small ?" Asked Ravok . “It’s small, but that’s what Starfleet does, isn’t it? The impossible.” Jan answered. “Our odds can’t be that bad. Ravok faced a Bajoran demon and survived.” Keira said optimistically. " I've dealt with the odds being stacked against me before, and everytime I have come out on top. Whatever you saw , it won't happen." Ravok said , looking at all of them. He could cut the tension with a knife. " So…" he paused, trying to shake off the awkwardness. " Do the two of you want see the Exeter?" When he finished his circuit around the lab and returned to her side he asked. "Hey listen, so, we're shipping out in about six hours, and I was wondering if you wanted to get a bite to eat before things got crazy." “Sounds like a plan.” This was one of the few times she’d allowed herself to be dragged away from the lab. So fresh things like seafood won’t kill half the crew in a weeks time.” “I think I know what I’m gonna order, have you seen our waiter?” “That reminds me actually. We’ve got a new waitress, really late appointment, she nearly didn’t make the launch, terribly nervous, but interviewed well. I want to see what she’s like on an actual busy service. Done a few waitress jobs, but not fine dining, very different to what say...Caity does down in the Nine and Dine.” “Oh yes, I think I noticed her yesterday, seemed a bit lost. Is she gonna be out waitress?” Trip said with a chuckle, “I’ll be on my best behavior.” “Please do. Don’t be difficult.” She winked at her husband. Addison picked up a small PADD, that the waiting staff used with the Point of Order system. Orders taken directly at the table, and sent either to the bar, or to the kitchens. She saw Ashlyn and what seemed to be her husband come in and take a seat in her section. She stepped over carefully, and approached the table. “Good evening Ma’am, and Captain.” She’d spent a long time learning all the rank insignia. She was only partly surprised to find out that Ashlyn was married to the Captain, but it was obvious that she hadn’t got the job as Rec Director just because of that. Remembering the lessons that Ashlyn had taken her through, she smiled welcoming, and spoke quietly, but clearly and concise. “Would you like drinks while you look at the menu, or are you ready to order? Soup de jour is Trillian winter vegetable, and we have a special of slow roasted Bajoran pheasant.” “I’ll just have a cup of the cream of mushroom soup, with chicken, pepper, and pesto sandwich on the ciabatta, and a baked potato, completely loaded, and a glass of water.” Trip said, wondering secretly if he was consuming too many carbs. Addison nodded, acknowledging the order, as she entered it into the system. “And for the lady?” “Thank you dear, I’ll have the scallops, followed by the lamb main with the mixed salad that we looked at earlier. And water will be fine for me too.” Once more Addison nodded, “So thats one mushroom soup, one scallops, one lamb main mixed salad. One chicken sandwich, and loaded baked potato. I’ll bring your drinks straight over. If there’s nothing else?” “That will be all thank you.” Addison smiled again, as she turned and walked to the bar, bringing two ice-cold glasses of water back over a minute or two later. “Captain. Ma’am.” “Thank you.” Trip said as he took the glass and began drinking from it. “Addison? Hows your first shift? Nerves holding?” The waitress nodded, “just, the ordering is easy, its the serving I’m worried about.” “You’re doing fine. Relax sweetie. Remember, nice and calm. Don’t dash.” Ashlyn smiled reassuringly. “Thank you Miss Ashlyn.” She turned away from the table, to clear a different one, and took the dirty plates into the kitchen. “Pleasant girl. Not much education, but references were decent enough.” “She seems nice, beautiful, but unassuming, sort of blends into the background. Are you sure you didn’t hire her because she reminded you of yourself?” Trip said with a smile. Ashlyn giggled. “Flatterer. We needed a person, she seemed like she just needed a chance.” “We all need a place, a purpose, a home. And I think this is a good one. I hope she fits in with the rest of the civilian staff. We’d be lost without them, without you. Y’all take care of us fleet types.” Ash nodded. “We all have a part to play. The smallest cogs drive the machine. You fleet types need feeding, a coffee in the morning, a beer after shift. Our jobs are to help you do your jobs.” “It’s true, someone needs to cut my hair, and I’m sure as hell not gonna let Ire do it.” Trip said with laugh. “Poor Ire. I’m sure he’d do a lovely job of your hair. You could ask Gabe, or Ailynn come to that. Surgeons must be able to cut hair right?” She winked at him. “I think Deytro Len, our Bolian barber does the best job in the quadrant, so let’s not test that theory.” Ashlyn laughed, and sipped her water as Addison brought the tray over with the starters. As she reached the table, and lifted the plate of scallops off to place in front of Ashlyn, the tray began to tilt. Seeing it about to happen even before Addison did, Ashlyn shot a hand up, and steadied it. “Nice catch pookie.” Trip said not realizing he might have been insulting the young waitress. “I’m so sorry Miss Ashlyn. I didn’t…” “Sweetie...it’s okay. The trays can get heavy. Rest it on the edge of the table remember? Support the middle, and when you're loading it, plan how you’re going to serve. Are you okay?” “Yes Miss Ashlyn. Thank you.” She served the soup to Trip. “Enjoy your meal.” Ash smiled, and made a mental note to tell Addison to relax a bit, ‘Miss Ashlyn’ sounded like a 90 year old spinster. She took a mouthful of the scallops, and moaned appreciatively. “Mmm. How’s the soup?” “Delicious.” Trip said barely being able to get words out between spoonfuls. “My first job was in a backstreet cafe. I was just out of school and on Bajor. I had a tray of six Dockworkers breakfasts, one of them kind of fancied me, so he tried to help by taking a plate off the tray. I got an instant lesson on physics. Dropped the lot. I got fired. Since then, it’s the first lesson I teach new waiting staff.” “And you wonder why they call you Miss Ashlyn. You’re the boss, they respect you. It’s not that you're some southern grandma, you’re just respected. And for good reason.” “I know. It’s just that…” Ashlyn had a rare moment of not being certain what to say. “To myself I’m still just ‘Ash’. You know, the loser kid from school, but here I’m the boss of the Civilian Staff, and as you say, respected. I’m not doing anything special, other than making sure that my staff get whatever education they want or need, and help along the way by sharing my many many mishaps. Like the tray.” “Welcome to my world hun. Though you have less pomp and circumstance.” As they conversed, Addison came back and removed the empty plates, carefully resting the tray on the edge of the table, earning a nod and wink of encouragement from Ashlyn. “I do, thankfully, but this room will see it’s moments of pomp. Ambassadors and the like.” She smiled, relishing even the thought of the challenge. “Maybe, but I think you’re more likely to see young officers trying to make romantic connections here than the Ambassadors. Most of them prefer the Captain’s dining room for something less, visible. But it does seem that love is in the air. Must be all the junior officers trying to get new year’s eve dates.” The main courses were delivered without further drama, and Ashlyn thanked Addison as she moved away to serve another table, keeping half an eye on her, but smiled at the growing confidence. “The New Year’s Eve Ball. All those dress uniforms, and dresses.” She smiled happily. “I love things like that.” “I mean, I proposed last New Year’s eve, so..” Ashlyn smiled, and rested her hand on his. “So I get to ask you this year?” She giggled. “Not sure it works like that sweetheart. But sure.” “Changing the subject…” She watched as Addison maneuvered a tray of four covers to a centre table. “Cerise came to see me.” She took a bite of her lamb, the redcurrant jous tart against the meat. “How’d that go?” Trip said after taking a bit from his sandwich. “I didn’t know how much she’d gone through. I never mixed or saw anyone after prom, and not long after that he died and I was on Bajor. I actually found myself liking the girl. She was so gentle, and passive. We sat in my office for about an hour and just chatted over coffees.” “You mean your dad, right?” “In the absence of a better word, yes.” Ashlyn shrugged. Her childhood had not been easy. “Sorry, we don’t have to talk about it, not hear anyways.” Ash smiled. “It is what it is. Our son will grow up with far better and more loving parents than I did.” Trip took her hands in his, “That he will, my dear one, that he will. But you’ll need to be ready, because rest assured, all his little friends will call you Miss Ashlyn.” Laughing, Ashlyn squeezed his hands, “and that’s fine by me. I love kids that age. Remember the story group that I used to run back on Mars?” She came to the end of her lunch, and placed her cutlery together. “Yeah, I caught a few shows.” Trip said with a laugh. He hadn’t finished his meal, but he would take a box to go. He was always taught that when the person you are out to eat with is done, you are also done. He may have been an arse from time to time, but he tried his best to be polite. “You were really good with the kids.” “I used to love those sessions.” Ashlyn smiled, catching Addison’s eye. “Floppy bunny was born in my second session. It was just before the base reopened. I hadn’t had time to prepare, so I had to wing it and make a story up. The moms and Dads told me that I should write it. That’s how I got back into the writing again.” “Well I look forward to seeing you read to our little dude.” Trip looked at the clock on the wall. “I need to head back up to the bridge, can you have them box up my left overs and send it home. I’ll have it for dinner or a snack later.” “I’ll do it myself honey, you sure you’ve had enough?” “Yeah, I mean, I finished my soup, two thirds of the sandwich, and half the potato. I think that should get me through the rest of the day.” “Okay. If you’re sure.” She turned, Addison had made her way to the table. “Addison, can you box this up to take out, and pass our compliments to the kitchen please sweetie.” “Of course Miss Ashlyn. Thank you I will.” “Now.” She leant forward and gave her husband a chaste kiss, “You’d better go make sure we’re not warping through a supernova or whatever it is you do up there.” She winked, teasing. “If we somehow go to warp now, docked with a Space station, honey, I think only an act of God could save us. But I get your point, have fun, and don’t get anyone killed.” He said with a smile. Ashlyn watched as Trip got up and stepped away from the table. She leant up her head and caught his kiss as he departed. Smiling gently to herself, she drank the last of her water, and walked toward the kitchen, taking the box of leftovers from Addison. “Good work sweetie. Relax you’re doing fine.” The rest of the afternoon, came, and went, the lounge growing abnormally quiet as the rest of the ship made ready to depart. " “Of course.” Ailynn agreed, “because even if old Erin wanted that, you’re past that.” "Trust him to turn up now. I don't regret any part of what we did. Not for a second, but round 2? Really?" “And nor should you. You’re noone to come running when someone ‘clicks’ their fingers. I wonder what he wanted?” "From the sounds of it, exercise. " she replied with a slight laugh “I mean I know what he said...I’m going to stop there.” "Probably a good idea. " she replied with a sigh. Ailynn blushed. “Sorry.” "I should have told you about Jimmy. You're one of the only friends I have here. Well, one of the few I can trust. It's just… this is something new. I've never been in anything like this before and I wanted something just for me for a change. Is that wrong of me?" “Not at all. Honey...I have things that were just me. Still are just me. It’s okay not to share things.” Ailynn smiled, gently. "Don't get me wrong, I wanted to. It was just nice to gave something good finally."she paused for a second and then continued, "So what have you not shared then?" “I still haven’t asked Caity out. It took me a while to admit to myself and even longer to tell you…” "Do I need to tell you to put your big girl panties on and just do it? Or, I suspect Trip would say, man up and just ask her.: “I’m scared ‘E’. What if…” Ailynn spoke, aware that the conversation was wandering, but not really minding. "She likes you. I mean… really does like you." “Hopefully. But that’s not what we’re talking about. Tell me about Nix. How did this come about?” "Nix? He just showed up at the coffee place, said hi. Asked how I was doing and then whispered that, if I was free tonight I should go to his for round 2." “So he...I can’t even…” Ailynn rubbed her temples. Today was not looking up. "I know. He seemed to take it okay. If you count saying if I got bored, I know where he is." “Oh well that was kind of him.” She replied sardonically. "I'm sorry for dumping this on you. I didn't want to call Jimmy. I know he would think I was an idiot for calling to say that i had done the right thing when it can be just as easily said face to face." “Erin. I am so happy for the steps you have taken, and facing what was difficult for you.” "Difficult? Yeah i suppose so. But i have to admit, it felt damn good to say no." “Good.” Ailynn agreed. Smiling gently. “Good for you. Always be in control.” "Now we have to get you and a certain snake owning bartender together. " “I’ll worry about that when I have time. I’ve got 500 people to worry about at the moment, Caity I’ll worry about later.” "Worry? You deserve happiness. So why not let me worry about that for you." “Erin. I adore you. But romance will probably never happen for me. I completely accept that.” "Oh. Honestly. You sound like a 15th century romance novel sometimes. Just because you think it does not make it so. Part of you thinks you don't deserve it. That's why you're hesitating. Just let go and go ask the bloody woman out before I do it for you." “Erin I adore you...but I don’t have the time for the romance stuff at the moment; as much as I may want it. Anyway, enough. Anything else?” "Okay, back to business. Last word on it. All work and no play makes A a sourpuss. But other than that. No. Science department stands ready to go. Got a great little project for my guys and just happy to go on a run of the mill mission for a change." “Run of the mill is good. As much as excitement is in our blood, I like normal. Keep me posted on whatever it is you wacky scientists are doing?” "Of course. It's nothing tremendously exciting but it could be good. It will be good." Standing, Erin smiled. "I'll leave you to your mountain of paperwork, Ma'am." She stated as she snapped a formal salute. Smiling gently, Ailynn shook her head gently. “Dismissed Lieutentant.” She paused, briefly. “And than you.” She winked, watching Erin leave the room. (Reply none) (posted by Jackie and Mark) (USS Exeter - Sickbay - CMO, Lt Gabe Vespers and ACFO, Ensign Ronnie Winters - 1604) "Maybe I shouldn't wear the uniform, in case your dad catches me!" “Well lucky for you the fact that he is my dad isn’t public knowledge so he can’t say anything publicly. So if he says anything, he looks bad because he’s interfering in his officer’s private lives.” Gabe laughed and kissed her "there's always behind closed doors!" Gabe pulled away and stood by the door. "Are you coming so I can get changed? There's a nice little Bajoran restaurant on the promenade, or we could visit the holodecks?" “Well we only have about an hour and a half, and I know how you get distracted on the holodeck, so we should probably go eat.” "Either way, I need out of this unform and you need to come with me." “I’ll go with you to the promenade Gabe the Babe, but I think you’re old enough where you don’t need my help changing.” she said with a giggle. "Ronnie, it's been two months, you are allowed to see inside my quarters you know. I promise I'll be on best behaviour" “It’s not the inside of your quarters thats the issue Gabriel,” She said with a silly tone. “Look, you got to remember, everyone I know, well, knew, everyone, I grew up with, my past, is a future that may never be. From a certain perspective maybe I’ll see them again someday, but from another, I’ll never really see them again. So yeah, I may like to hug, I may like to kiss, but there are just, certain steps of intimacy, I’m just slow playing, because, well, I have my reasons. And I just don’t want to put you in an awkward situation is all, because I really %$#$%# care about you. So, if you promise to stay in your room when you change… I guess I can be bothered to see your quarters, so I hear they smell like ass.” Ronnie said with a wink. "Yes I know, I'm dating the girl from the twilight area, now come on I need to change" Gabe walked over to the door and held it open "shall we Ensign?" “Call me Ensign one more $#@#$# Gabriel Vesper, and you’ll be sorry.” Ronnie said playfully as she took his arm and followed him out. (Starbase Freedom - Promenade - CMO, Lt Gabe Vespers and ACFO, Ensign Ronnie Winters - 1715) Gabe sat at the table and looked at his empty plate, they had finished their meal but he kept looking at it, annoyed in himself with what Nix had said, but also what Ronnie had said; he wanted her, the person not the body. "You know, I wonder how boring life on a starbase would be. We get to experience the outer reaches of space, these guys just stay still" Gabe put the menu down and looked at Ronnie admiring her. “Yeah, but at the same time, these guys are building something, like they’re building something new. And everyday, new cultures, new people walk through the door. Sure we have adventures, but these guys, these guys get to experience a new story everyday.” "So do we, frontier medicine, the final frontier if I remember the speech correctly." Gabe smiled again “Plus they don’t have to be stuck with your prickly ass every day.” "Are you putting a transfer request in then?" “No, you’re not quite that bad.” "Didn't think so Ronnie, I may be prickly but I'm adorable with it, so I'm told." Gabe took a drink "Ronnie, can I ask you something?" “Yes Gabe?” "Why the change of heart, why us? You say things are complicated but, you don't seem to be disturbed by its complications." “What do you mean? I’m not quite sure I know what you’re asking?” "What you said in Sickbay, the whole not being able to date at first because of the timelines, even now you're not fully here. Why not live for the here and now, paradoxical issues aside, you can't live your life wondering what's going to happen tomorrow, you said it yourself, tomorrow is a new story, live it and live it with me." “Oh Gabe, I love you, but I think you misunderstood. I am living in the here and now, and I’m trying to figure out how to live in the moment. I just, I’ve seen, both in this timeline and my own, physical intimacy not necessarily lead to a good spiritual and emotional connection, and I just rather have that strengthened first before, you and I get that close. I love you Gabe too much to %$@# it up because I can’t keep my hands out of your pants.” Gabe snorted his drink out and looked at her. Ronnie pause, “Oh $@#$. That’s the first time I said I love you isn’t it?” Wiping his nose and coughing the drink away he looked at her "it would appear, Ensign Winters, that you have a soft side." He held the look "we've both come from troubled backgrounds and maybe that's what's pulled us together but ultimately I love you too, just please don't tell the crew I'm soft. I don't care about intimacy, I just want to wake up knowing you're safe, here and cared about." He stood up, walked around the table and kissed Ronnie's head again "Now I'll stop calling you Ensign, if you consider coming for dinner tomorrow, I'm cooking. Best behaviour too." “I promise.” She said with a smile. “Look, the thing is, I do feel safe with you, and I’m happy with you. I just need time to get to know your soft side, before I show you my soft side.” Ronnie then gave Gabe a little wink. “Since I was 18, I basically did everything I could to avoid creating this kind of attachment with anyone, and I sort of just romanticized the chase in my head. So thank you for being patient, and not a pig headed boar like some of those @#$%@& at the academy.” "Apparently, I don't have a soft side, just hard." Gabe held her shoulders in a semi protective way. “I know, one of these days I’ll stop swearing, like a proper lady.” "I couldn't care less, now, if we only had half an hour time is up, where can I walk you to?" “Probably get some Ice Cream before making are way back to the ship.” Pulling her chair up and taking her hand "lead on" he smiled. Ronnie smiled, clasping her hand around his. Whatever the future held, she had one person in her life to make her confident that this present was her home. So you better get yourself going=^= “I have three minutes it will be fine.” =^=Come on, get a move on=^= He slowly got up from his kneeling position. He had been kneeling in front of a shoot which was growing out of the seed he had brought from Domum, that he had planted shortly after his arrival on board and had spoken to the botanist in charge of the arboretum who had suggested a quiet place where he would have the quiet he needed for medication. “Okay Ash. Where are we going?” =^=Start in this deck and do a standard sweep=^= “Okay.” =^=Less than two minutes=^= He gave a mental smile as he nodded his thanks to the botanist as he headed for the door. He had been lucky with his assignment on the Exeter as he had been worried that he would have been put into a security team. He was not good at working in teams or with large groups of people, he understood command structure and where he fitted into it, but he preferred to work alone which was why he had become a Ranger in the first place. They understood his desire for independent and self-reliance which was why Ravok had partnered him with Ash. She was an Elaysian who worked in the monitoring center in the security department due to this he would patrol the ship by himself with Ash tracking him with the internal sensors and comms. This gave him the solitary work that he enjoyed but also gave him contact with another person on a daily basis. It had been strange at first having Ash talking in his ear peace, but he had become use to it and their friendship had grown rapidly. Even though had been irritated at first being given a partner as he felt that it indicated that he had a problem with people and was not good enough to work in his own. Once he had started work with Ash he realized how out of touch he had been being around people and that being partnered with Ash was good for him reintegrate himself into normal society even if the person who was helping him had some bizarre quirks at times. “Okay Ash I am outside the arboretum. Where do we go first?” =^=Okay start heading forward towards the starlight lounge then swing back in a loop aft to the nine and dine. Commander Tyko Nix - 1700) As the Exeter grew nearer to her departure window, Nix decided to stop in for a bit of a happy hour. He wasn't on duty, didn't have to be alert. He was merely a passenger. So he figured he would stop in and get a drink or two. But no more than three. As he approached the bar he recognized a familiar bartender who was none to happy with him the last time he was there. "So Cates, could I get a martini, or am I on the do not serve list?" (reply DuBois) "So about the last time I was in here, did you start learning about the crew, or are you still single minded?" (reply DuBois) (Reply DuBois) (posted by Will) (USS Exeter - Nine and Dine - Civilian Caity Dubois - 1702) It had been a quiet day in the bar, save for the cheese sauce incident from earlier. There had been a few patrons, not as many as usual as the crew were enjoying the last few hours at the station or were getting ready for the scheduled departure later. Wiping down the bar, Caity was lost in her own thoughts when a voice that she had not heard in a while broke the monotony. "So Cates, could I get a martini, or am I on the do not serve list?" Looking up, she bit her lip a little, forced a smile onto her face and replied, “Agent Nix. Surprised to see you darken my doorstep again. Martini was it?” Reaching behind the bar, she began to mix his drink as he continued to speak, "So about the last time I was in here, did you start learning about the crew, or are you still single minded?" “Still as forthright as ever. What i know about the crew is my business.” "Not that its any of my business of course. Did the captain ever start coming in here, or is he still avoiding this place?" “Avoiding is a strong term. Almost as strong as sleeping with someone and then disappearing.” (Reply Nix) “She is a good friend of mine. So tell me, Mr Nix, why are you here and don’t give the ‘you lot are my ride’ speech.” (reply Nix) Leaning forward, she handed the drink to him and spoke slowly, “This crew mean a lot to me. All of them. You tread carefully here, Commander. Play nice, play safe and we’ll get along just fine.” (Reply Nix) (reply Nix) (Posted by Jackie) (USS Exeter - Main Science Lab - CSO Lt JG Erin Cortez - 1707) Standing infront of her team, Erin smiled softly at them. They had all been through a lot during the last mission and had performed admirably. Now was the time to make that known. “Ladies and gentlemen, first of all let me apologise. This meeting should have been earlier but duty and time got away from me. Secondly, I want to tell you all how proud i am of the team we have built here. All different specialisms and all working together as one team. I could not be more proud.” (Reply Science) “Now to the point of this meeting. An idea came to me a few years ago that i wanted to put into place and have not had the time, nor the team to work with until now. This is something to be done at the same time as any ongoing projects or as and when current missions allow. Do not think that this is something that needs to be done right away. This is something that we are all going to be working on together. And with that said, the idea that we are to be working on is this. A science version of the EMH. Using the EMH as a base, i want each of you to trawl through your own specialisms. Find scientists, data that we should include in the making of this project. Ensign Michaels will be taking the lead on this project. Any questions, problems, ideas… speak with her. Any technicalities etc. When we have a working model, i will speak to engineering about outfitting this lab and the auxiliary labs with holoemitters. This SMH as we can call it, can be used in an emergency. If something goes wrong with an experiment or the environment is not good for us to go into, we can send it. To gather data, bring back samples and do our job whilst not sacrificing any member of our team.” (Reply Science) “Any Questions?” (Reply Science) (Reply Adala, Science) (Posted by Jackie) (USS Exeter - Billy Alexander Quarters - CIO Lieutenant(jg) Jaelle Foxglove and StratOPS, Ensign SG Billy Alexander - 1745) Time, Jaelle needed time to process what the orders that were contained with in the padd she held. She knew she needed to tell Billy, but every time she tried to think of what words to say the escaped her. After the mission with the cult both of them had given each other space, now Jaelle was wondering if that was a good thing. “Oh hey, Jess” Billy said as he opened the door and let her in. “What’s up? You look like you got punched in the gut.” Billy welcomed her in and showed her to the couch. She followed to the couch and took a set. She wanted to talk about anything else other than her new orders. "Things could be better," She spoke softly. "How have you been?" She placed her hand on his concern evident in her voice. “Me, I’m fine. I’ve just been living ya know. I’m easy. You on the other hand, you’ve kind of been distant, but I get that, I gave you space. I didn’t want to get into what happened with Trip anyways. He’s my cousin, and I don’t want to be put into the position to pick sides.” "And I didn't want to make you feel that way. The last thing I want is to put you in a position where you have to pick between family and myself." “Are you still bummed about that?’ "Not bummed," She took a breath there was still a multitude of feeling that she had yet to properly deal with. "Just felt we could all use a little space. The last mission threw a lot at all of us. Though it would be a good time to process. Besides, medical didn't let me out of their eyes for a bit." “Why do I get the feeling there is a huge bombshell coming. I can see it in your face. You look like somebody told you that Santa Claus doesn’t exist.” The conversation felt good. She wanted to just continue to talk like that for the rest of the night. To forget, but Billy had a knack for finding how to get to the heart of a subject. She held his hands tightly as she looked up into his eyes. "I've been recalled and reassigned, effective immediately." The words were softly spoken as her voice trembled at each word passed her lips. “Well what’s the new gig?” "I'm to take command of the newly refitted Starfire. Hunt down and bring the remaining cultists to justice, figure out who was supplying them, and maintain a Federation force in this area until a larger expeditionary force can be established." “That’s a good thing, why do you look like someone kicked a puppy? I mean I’m assuming your rank is being returned and you can put your experience to good use.” "I'm being returned to full commander." She let the padd slide out of her hands. "However this is being handled in part by the Starfleet intelligence and I will fall under the command of Admiral Knight… my adopted mother." Billy peered down at the PADD, “Umm, says here you’re reporting to a Commodore on Deep Space Nine.” "I read that." She shrugged. “I mean I know you don’t trust SFI, but I mean do you really think Admiral Knight would be that duplicitous to piss off the entire Admiralty board?” "No what I mean is she is clever enough to disguise her goal to make it look like what's trying to accomplish will look above board. Like she as done for the last sixty years." “Do you really think the current Admirals are that clueless that they’d fall for something like that, not put in safeguards?” "You know how many times those safe guards have failed. I know I have every reason to trust those orders but I can't not if she's involved." She responded with an iron fist over her emotions. “Well guess you think my Dad is a fool.” Billy said as he sat down in a chair opposite her. "I would never think that." She spoke suddenly finding herself on the defensive. “Maybe it’s just a different way of viewing the world. I’ve never had any reason not to trust the process, and you’ve never had a reason to trust it. Or maybe you have but you rather let the negative evidence outweigh the bad. Who knows? I’m not a mind reader.” "It's just Knight always has found a way." “But it’s a new era, and you’ve got friends higher up. Sometimes a chair is just a chair. A command is just a command.” Now Jaelle felt even worse. Did she just further insult the family of someone she cared about. How much was this for her own good. How much did Trip and Billy tell their respective families. "I haven't earned such kindness. I don’t know them." Jaelle took a moment to find the right words. "I'm not used to having support. I've done everything on my own for so long. It's hard to think…." She shook her head. "I gave up long ago thinking that it could be different." “Then I think this posting might be good for you. Because you’re going to have to learn to listen, trust, and go with your gut, in a hurry. Know that everyone has your back, give you input and trust that your decision is an informed one and the right one. It might be good to learn what it means to be part of a team. Sometimes being the head of the team, the leader, makes you realize how much you need to trust everyone in a hurry, or you’ll all be dead.” "You sound like Trip." She spoke kindly, and chuckled a bit. “I mean that makes sense, we played sports together growing up. But also, we were lucky. Our grandfather is a retired Admiral, our Dads are Admirals. His mom is an Admiral. My mom retired as a commander, my Uncle Thomas and aunt Katie are captains, my uncles Gabriel and Michael are Colonels with the Marines. We grew up around the fleet, around officers, who were always willing to share wisdom. So if I sound like him, its because we had the same….education for lack of a better term.” "And I've had to fight for everything I have. We truly are worlds apart." “Galaxies even,” Billy said with a small chuckle. “But if there is one thing I’ve learned from sports, and yes I know you hate it when I bring it up, is sometimes the only way to truly learn how to work in a team, to feel what trust and support is, is to be the loner or the primadonna, or the I can do it on my own guy, and then have the mantle of leadership thrust upon you.” "I have lead before but never like this. Someone was there in case…." She looked away. "I lost it." “Someone will be there, you will have a First Officer, and whoever that person is you will need to trust their guidance and their support. And trust that when you make up your mind, your decision, they will carry it out. That they will have your back. That they will be there no matter what.” Jaelle nodded as Billy continued, she was glad she came to talk to him. She was curious, when did he become so good at handling her. “Honestly, I think, I think you are up to the challenge, and this will be good for you. But enough about that, enough about trust. Because the only thing that can change your perception is experience, and you haven’t had that yet.” "Maybe you're right." She said simply. “I mean surely there is something about this that might excite you about the opportunity.” "It's a chance to grow, and…" she held her arms wide to exaggerate the point. "While I dont get those options too many times, they do come along." “The thing is, it’s going to be what you make of it. But the fleet, if it’s gonna be rebuilt and be strong, needs its experienced people leading. Commanding ships. And maybe they just need to know if you can do it. Or maybe its exactly as you say and Admiral Knight is the boogeyman, and you will become her puppet for all eternity.” "She eyed Billy." Please don't even joke like that. Truth is I'm scared. She has taken everything away from me time, and time, and time again." She shook her head. "I can't lose everything again." “But whatever happens, I’ll be here. I’ll lend you me ears, my wit, my devilish good looks.” "But you won't be there, and I will miss you." “I know, but subspace communications being what they are, we’ll be able to talk almost every day. You may not have me physically, but you’ll always have my voice.” "It's not enough," she smiled. "It won't ever be good enough." “I know, but that’s life. Life is joyous and bittersweet at the same time. But If nothing else, I think you will learn the most important lesson of all. You can’t do it alone. And your circle needs to be larger. That wherever you are, you will always have allies and friends.” "I think you're wrong about something though." She sighed, and smiled in his words new worlds of possibilities had opened in her mind. "It's not the fact that I can't do it alone. It's that I don't want to do it alone anymore. I need to grow my circle, and that's why we are good for each other. You push me to grow beyond myself. I push you… your limits, your boundaries. We help pull each other where we lack." "Listen, I'll help you pack and help calm any worries you might have. More hands, less work." "That would be nice." She nodded. "We've had enough time apart." "But before you leave, you should talk to Trip." "I might do that, I don't want to leave on a bad foot between Trip and myself." She looked to Billy as she took his hand into hers. "Can you do something for me?" She asked sweetly, pulling her hand away leaving behind her commander pips. "What do you want me to do?" "Last time I removed these pips, I swore I would never wear them again because I didn’t think I ever could. But if it comes from you. Let me start widening my world with you. Can you place those where they need be?." It was simple Jaelle spoke her mind. If she was indeed going to need support. If she was to trust people, ask for their help. Let it start here with Billy and start small with a few simple pips. "Gladly."
