Commander Sekal, FO Lt (sg) Sienna Williams-Verin and 2O Lt (sg) Carson Peters - 0658) It had been only minutes from the time Sekal had begun reading the reports concerning the shuttlecraft performance tests when his command team began arriving. Carson Peters entered unobtrusively and took a seat followed closely by Sienna. "Good morning Sir. I heard Luma's song as I was hurrying back from UP. May I get some coffee from the replicator before we begin?" Sekal looked up from the file he was perusing. "Of course number one, I believe the correct colloquialism would be to make yourself at home." He sat back. "Computer save file location and retract." The screen blanked and lowered itself back to the desktop. As Sienna was getting her beverage he nodded at Carson. "Feel free to do so as well number two. I anticipate this will not be short.” Grabbing a coffee from the replicator, Carson waited for Sienna to choose her seat and then sat next to her. “Thank-you. I also spoke to Luma when I checked in on Main Engineering and.. Vex. Everything seems to be running smoothly.” finishing his sentence by taking a sip of the coffee and looking to Sienna. Sienna got the triple shot mocha caramel macchiato with extra chocolate and then took the offered seat. The drink was a sugary, chocolatey, caffeinated Betazoid dream and Sienna seemed to be as pleased by it as she was anything these days. The two could almost see and feel it when Sienna put her personal issues away in a compartment in her mind and turned the cool iciness that was her professional self to the meeting at hand. “Do we know when the Exeter is launching?” She asked, the words almost frosty. Underneath it was the indication that she hoped it would be soon. "Yes." He replied. “Exeter and Illuminar will be launching simultaneously at 0800 tomorrow." Sienna was slightly surprised by this. She had not been aware that it would be so soon, but she nodded. Anything to get away from here for a bit. “I was over at shipping and receiving. Luma’s roses arrived on the freighter that was overdue early in the morning and are due to be transferred. Most of the replacement parts we needed have arrived as well. There continues to be a shortage of the holo-emitters that Luma prefers. My advice is to move the working ones to key areas, and then use the older style ones of which we have a bucket load for less critical areas. I know the dream is to have her be able to materialize anywhere on the ship outside of crew quarters, but there are other ways to do that - I got in contact with Admiral Janeway and the specs of her EMH’s portable holo emitter were sent over. It should give the engineers something to puzzle over in order to adapt it for her use.” Sienna pulled the padd out of her bag that had the incoming manifest from UP and passed it to Peters after double checking that a copy had been sent to the Captain. Sekal quirked an eyebrow. "Luma has already made excellent use of the holo emitters on the bridge and appeared quite satisfied. Having that capability in every area is unnecessary but it must be noted that any areas she can access in that manner will also have access to the Mark- 1 EMH if necessary. I find that capability to be useful as well." Sienna nodded, “Even getting that many emitters will be difficult.” Sienna thought for a moment, “The crystal we transferred her with, is that going to be the best way to get her off the ship if we have to evacuate? I will make a note to bring it up with Vex and make sure that we have a workable solution, preferably before we leave this dock.” Looking up from the padd, Sienna had handed him, “There are already well worked protocols put in place with Security & Luma on how she’d be evacuated if required.” Carson said nonchalantly. “It’ll be a forever improving plan though.” He said as he looked between them. “How did the shakedown cruise go?” He asked Sienna directly, he’d read the reports of course, but was hoping to hear some detail from her on what it had been like. Sienna relaxed, in a way that Sekal was very familiar with from over the years of working with her. “She flew, as my Dad would say. There were rough spots, all of which were detailed in my reports, as well as the steps towards fixing them. Having Vex out there with us was a great help - she is truly a gifted engineer. Taya was very useful as the information she was studying was very close in many cases to the problems we had. Taya has that same ability to instinctively know what a problem might be before consciously knowing the process.” Sienna always spoke of the crew and her insights on them over the mechanical. That was all in the reports. Smiling as he sipped the hot drink, his mind went to Vex. It was nice to hear how useful she’d been, he’d missed her and he knew Luma had too. “The tech innovations are solid, and while I really wanted to stretch her wings as far as we are able, the Starfleet regs were quite clear and I know from my Dad’s experience that all it takes is the wrong person to not be pleased at the way the form was filled out to derail a mission, so I gently made sure of that once we got back here. I wish we had more time with integrating Luma as well. But I am glad that Luma was not available for the trials conversely. We needed to see what the ship could do without her but… I want to repeat the standard trials with Luma fully integrated and see what the differences are.” Sienna was proud of herself. She had delivered her report concisely, remembering her first rambling science department meeting on Mars not that long ago.. “MmHmm. That’ll be an interesting set of numbers to look at.” Carson agreed as he looked from Sienna to their Commander, Sekal. He sat studiously watching their conversation, “Anyway, Captain- since we have a launch time, I assume we have a mission, or a direction?” Sekal leaned forward with his elbows planted lightly on the desk. "Indeed. Our destination will be Bajor. Contact with them has been limited in the last two years and command wishes to know why. Illuminar and Exeter are meant to show the Bajoran government that they have not been abandoned and that they can count on StarFleet once again for support." “Bajor? I’ve never been. I’ll have to do some reading. Have either of you been?” Carson said as he pondered what difficulties a trip to Bajor could bring. “Do we know how the people and government of Bajor see Starfleet at the moment?” Sekal turned his full attention to his second officer. "I have not been to Bajor. Bajor has always been a staunch member of the Federation even though there was concern on their part over including Cardassia as a member. Ill feelings are not expected though being prepared would be logical." He looked from Sienna to Carson. "We will be running a test on the maximum warp drive duration during transit. The data I studied would appear to support my original theory that we can push the envelope well past 12 hours. I want a test to see if we can extend that to 15. It should be easily reachable and could become the new baseline for future tests." A devilish thought crossed Carson’s mind and he smiled slightly, “Trying to beat the Exeter to the planet, Captain? I’m all for that.” he joked. An eyebrow rose at the hint of emotional content to his announced test. "That would be illogical. Illuminar is the faster ship and arriving together is considered unnecessary. We will be there half a day before Exeter arrives regardless." Changing tact Carson continued, “What are the downsides to pushing the envelope so much? Could it damage the ship in any way?” he asked as he shifted position in the chair and placed the mug on the table in front. Carson thought it would be a good question for Taya or Vex but asked the two Scientist’s in front of him, That brought out the science researcher and engineer in the Vulcan. Saleke had largely left the disciplines behind when moving to command but not his son, Sekal was going to be heavily involved between missions upon return to Mars. "There will be no damage to ship's systems as we will be monitoring heat levels in the warp core and I have built in an expansive safety margin. It will however give us a good look at standard components and their ability to handle the added load. There is the possibility of component failures in this type of test in which case we will redesign the compromised components and make another attempt at a later date." Sienna nodded in reply. She was a plant biologist, but she had studied these systems enough to know that was true. Carson shrugged, “Good to hear. I guess I’ve been watching too many of the old Earth Science-Fiction films. So we definitely won’t end up hitting a magic speed and ending up in the future, or the past?” He was probably pushing his luck too far, but he needed to test Sekals humour and understanding if they were going to be working together long term. "I do not anticipate we will be reaching ludicrous speed." Sekal replied referencing a line from an old terran film that was farcical in nature. Sy looked between them, “We will absolutely not be sling shotting around a sun in order to go back in time like the Enterprise crew once did. “ She smiled lightly, showing dimples, also agreeing and teasing back with her stern reply. She thought they would do well together, it was good for them that they had all gotten along so well on Mars and that carried over here. Only time would turn them into a more cohesive unit than what they had currently. Sekal then pivoted the conversation. "Both of you are integrally aware of the design changes made in the ship to integrate the new crystal drive as well as to take full advantage of Luma's presence aboard. You know what to look for in the event of issues and what steps to take in case of an emergency as any command officer is expected. No other command officer before though has been faced with the depth of changes made over standard starship design." He refilled his water glass and took a good sip to wet his mouth then returned the glass to the desktop then spoke concisely and there was no bragging or self aggrandizement in his voice. "I however was the primary source of the redesigns and worked with Keira Merek on implementing them. If there is anything about the new systems with which you are not familiar and wish to have my insight at any point you need only ask." He sat back in his chair. "Illuminar at this time is only at the forefront of what she will become, Exeter as well and ships going forward are expected to have drastic changes. Smaller, faster and more powerful. The design change from a fleet of massive ships to one comprised mostly of smaller ships like Illuminar and Exeter will allow Command to rebuild StarFleet much more quickly than originally anticipated and the two of you will in time be in line for ships of your own." He looked at each of them in turn to note their reaction. Sienna spoke softly, “Maybe one day, Sir. I have a lot to learn first.” And she was not sure that she wanted to be in that role. But time changes everything. The thought of being in charge of his own Starship and crew bemused Carson enough to stay silent and say nothing for a moment, “So Bajor is just a show of force, nothing more? How long are we expecting to stay?” "A show of force with Starfleet's newest and most advanced ships, yes. Simplistic yet apropos. Sending two was considered overkill but necessary. As Bajor will be the first to see Illuminar and Exeter it is thought that they will make the greatest impact there together. As for our timeframe, we will remain in orbit for three days before splitting up and doing a short patrol of the Badlands along with Exeter if there are no issues. If we run into difficulties, the Republic will be available to assist if needed. Are there any other questions or concerns?" “Not from me,” Carson responded and looked to Sienna. "When we get there, I would like to liase with Bajoran Public Health. Some research I was doing says that there are lingering effects from the occupation, mostly in the older population. It will be excellent press." She sighed at that. So much of what they had been told to do was to generate excellent press."We have the Vulcan advances in the neuro med specialties among the aging and infirm." The Vulcan nodded. "A logical outgrowth of our mission. You may make that overture after I have contacted the Bajoran government." He looked at them both. "If there is nothing else the officers will be reporting in shortly and we all have duties to perform." Sekal got to his feet and waited for Carson and Sienna to precede him from the room then followed them out. (Reply: None) (Posted by Charles Gatling (Sekal) Melinda Gatling. He proffered a PADD. Sekal extended his hand and took the device and looked it over. "Greetings Lieutenant and welcome aboard the Illuminar. I noted in the duty roster that you had already checked aboard yesterday evening. Have you had an opportunity yet to make an inspection of the labs?" "Not as of yet. It seemed somewhat wrong to do so before reporting in. So I've only read over the current reports of the status of the science department." Sekal nodded. "Ensign Stennin has toured the labs and filed a preliminary report. I expect a report from yourself also when time permits. After the ship is underway I will be making an inspection of all the departments and am compiling a baseline for comparison." "Understood, sir. I'll be sure to touch base with Stennin at the earliest opportunity." "Do you have any questions at this time?" "Not at the moment. Is there anything else you need from me at the moment?" (reply Sekal, Trei, Tamblyn, any) (posted by Spencer) (USS Illuminar – Bridge - Ops- CPO Charles Tamblyn - 0815) Sekal blanked the PADD that Tamblyn had given him and handed it to the Yeoman as well then tapped his comm-badge. "Luma verify that Chief Tamblyn has access to his quarters please." =^= Luma checks. =^= There was a short pause. =^= Luma has verified for the Sekal. The Tamblyn can use his quarters now. =^= As Charles listened, he raised his right eyebrow and looked questioningly at the ship’s captain and mouthed “The Sekal, the Tamblyn?” "Thank you Luma." He turned to Tamblyn. "Your quarters are now available. I would suggest taking the rest of the day to familiarize yourself with the ship and its energy routing protocols. There are several differences from the older Intrepid/Bellerophon class due to the inclusion of high energy plasma into the general power grid. If you have any questions Ensign Taya or one of the command crew should be available." “I will do that, sir. At least after I stop by sickbay for my in-processing physical.” the Ops NCO said as he began to turn to leave and then stopped in mid-movement and turned his head back to look at Sekal again, “Sir, who or what is Luma?” (Reply: Sekal) Charles nodded his head and went to the position of attention facing the Vulcan. Placing his hand over his heart, Charles bowed slightly as he stated, “I look forward to serving alongside you again, sir.” (Reply: Sekal iyw) When he straightened up, Tamblyn made his way to the turbolift and began making his way toward sickbay. (USS Illuminar - Sickbay - Ops- CPO Charles Tamblyn - 0833) Tamblyn walked into the sickbay, hadn’t even gone to his quarters to drop off his duffle bag, pistols, or even change into a uniform. The captain told him to take the day to familiarize himself with the ship, no point in changing cloths for a computer-assisted self-guided tour. After the sickbay doors closed behind him, Charles waited for a couple of minutes and watched as the medical staff was putting supplies away and preparing to get underway the next day. A few of the staff nodded in acknowledgment in his direction as they walked past him with their hands full. Tamblyn finally got someone’s attention. “Hi, I’m Chief Tamblyn, the incoming Operations NCOIC. I need to get an in-processing physical.” (Reply: any in sickbay) (reply: Sekal, any in sickbay) (Posted by Charlie) (USS Illuminar – Bridge - CO- Lieutenant Commander Sekal- 0817) “I will do that, sir. At least after I stop by sickbay for my in-processing physical.” Chief Tamblyn turned to leave then stopped. “Sir, who or what is Luma?” Sekal quirked an eyebrow. He had not considered that the officer had never met Luma. "A non corporeal entity, the last of her race found aboard a derelict generation ship three decades ago. She has been integrated into the Illuminar's main computer bank where she will serve as a crew member of the ship in fulfillment of her oath to Commodore Remae." “I look forward to serving alongside you again, sir.” He nodded at the CPO. "I as well. You are dismissed Chief Tamblyn. Medical will be expecting you." He watched as the man left the bridge, his face and manner not betraying his surprise. There were salutes and there was respect and the two were not often given together. They had both been present in full force. Sekal awaited the next arrival. Tamblyn removed his shoulder-holster rig that held his twin disruptor pistols and pair of Bowie knives as he took the pro-offered seat on the bio-bed. “Is there anything I should know?” Quinna asked. Tamblyn raised his eyebrows and rocked his head from side to side two or three times before answering, “Well, I am a reservist who’s been mobilized. On the civilian side, I earn a living as a bounty hunter and private investigator. Each career field alone is dangerous at best. Both together…” Charles said with a whistle and made a face before finishing with “I average two cigars a week and 14 drinks a week made with actual bourbon, rum, or scotch; none of that synth-stuff.” Quinna started scanning Tamblyn. “Other than four broken noses, broken knee, and two broken fingers being shot in the leg and chest, and a couple of stabbing wounds, mixed with high blood pressure; I’m doing pretty good.” (Reply Solice) (Reply Solice) (Played by Charlie) (USS Illuminar - Ready Room - Deck 1 - CO - Lieutenant Commander Sekal - 1026) “Can you give me a heads up about where we are going?” His Chief Medical Officer asked. With a smile, Quinna walked to the table. She was about to apologize but Ariel started in. "Please sit down. What do you want to know about me?" Quinna was taken aback. She really hoped that she mistook the tone that was given. “Are you OK? If there is something wrong. I would hope you would talk to me.” (Reply Trei) “I am sorry. I misread your tone. I am really excited we get to continue to work together.” Quinna said. (Reply Trei) “I want to make sure you are good with things. I know as lead counselor, you are going to be a busy woman. I also hear you will be working on your medical expertise. I think that is amazing. “ Quinna was trying to alleviate any concerns that Ariel may have. (Reply Trei) (Played by Kris) (USS Illuminar - Deck 11 Aft Lounge - ACOUNS ACMO ENS SG Ariel Trei - 13.13) She was friendly and open by nature so she wasn't expecting the reaction she got from Quinna. She tried to explain that to Quinna. "I am fine Quinna. You see most Betazoids are very friendly and open. Yes I took a couple practice modules to help you in sickbay and yes I will be busy with my counseling duties. We can work that out together. It will be great working with you." (Reply Quinna iyw) (Posted by Edward) (USS Illuminar - Holodeck 2 - SPC COUNS Alaya Ravenstone - 19.53) Alaya had drifted onto the holodeck, dressed tonight in the more subdued pantsuit that she enjoyed wearing as the more standard counseling uniform. She beamed, seeing Ariel and Quinna, crossing the ruins to her coworkers. "Hi!" She spoke with a great deal of enthusiasm, her energy level very high. "I don't know how I'm going to be able to wind down to sleep tonight girls. Are the rest of the staff coming, or is it just us?" Alaya stopped at the plate of food, nodding. She saw the small cookies that Alaya preferred, called lemon meringues. She picked up a few as well as some cheese and fruit. Alaya's mischievous grin was there as she took out two excellent vintages of wine from her bag, "It's real not replicated, so be warned." One was a Betazoid wine, the other one from Capella. "Did either of you get leave before reporting in?" She had wanted to take leave, but had been far too busy working on her further credentials in counseling. "I was working on the xenopsych studies. Kinda always been my dream to be out there in the stars. Discovering the new life and going boldly forth." Alaya was simply a happy person. (reply the medical staff) (posted by Mel) (Illuminar, Holodeck 2, SPC Medical Yeoman CPO Kathy Miller, 1955) Kathy had served twenty-three years as a medical yeoman. First on Earth, followed by Mars. The only time she was in space, was traveling between the two planets, so when the opportunity to serve on a starship came up, she jumped at it. She had the seniority at her position, and with Doctor Solice being the Illuminar CMO, Kathy easily got the transfer. When the time came to actually move onto the ship, being an NCO, Kathy had to share quarters with a roommate. She had been seeing SCPO Paul Kirby for a year, so when he was transferred to the Illuminar as well, they decided to bunk together. Kathy had spent her time getting their room just right, as well as getting sickbay ready. When Solice called the staff for a casual meet in the holodeck, Kathy wanted to run there and make sure everything was prepared; that's what she did on the job. She made sure the staff had what they needed. Paul had to calm her down and take a deep breath. "Relax. Enjoy this." That's what he had said. It wasn't easy, but she managed. Kathy was wearing blue jeans, a light blue t-shirt, tennis shoes, and a silver necklace. Her hair was loose on her shoulders. Stepping into the holodeck, she saw the ruins of a Greek building. Doctor Solice, Ariel, and Counselor Ravenstone were there, too. "Hello," said Kathy cheerfully. "How's it going?" (reply any) (posted by Rob) (SPC CPO Kathy Miller) (USS Illuminar - Holodeck 2 - ACOUNS ACMO ENS SG Ariel Trei - 19.56) She saw Alaya enter with her happy disposition. She was a bit too excited for the collective of the room so Ariel tried to bring her down to an even level First she tried to do it telepathically even though her telepathic ability was not strong. :: Calm down Honey. Just enjoy the party. :: If that didn't work, she went over to talk with her. "I find the strawberry tarts are delightful. The Lemon tarts are good too. It seems our counseling schedule is pretty full. How would you like to divide the appointments?" (Reply Ravenstone) (Posted by Edward) (USS Illuminar -- Holodeck 2 -- Deck 5 -- Lt. J.G. Earlier, Quinna felt maybe she should resign if she was going to be like she acted earlier. Next Ravenstone enter. Quinna felt evenrgized when Alaya came in and brought her enthusiasm. It was energizing Quinna, and Quinna was enjoying herself again. Kathy Miller had joined. Quinna thought how Kathy was the hardest yet most unappreciative member of the medical staff. Quinna wanted to make sure that Kathy was appreciated more. Quinna looked at the newest member. A persons she is hopping to get to know. With everyone accounted for, it was time to start. She turned to the dessert table and made a move towards it. Quinna felt the breeze. She grabbed some fresh fruit and had a seat at the table with the others. “I appreciate everyone taking time to meet. I promise I am not geting to long but I thought we should have a little meeting before we leave dock tomorrow morning.” “As you know I am the Cheif Medical Officer but if you know me, I like us all working together. Ensign Trei is our lead couselor and the Assistant Cheif medical officer.” “I would lik to note that even though we have all worked together, a new face joins us, Ensign Nima Dalton.” this felt more like a school day than a medical team meeting. “Ensign Dalton, Anything you would like to say about anything?” (Reply Dalton) “I really want to keep this informal and get to know eachother. Anyone want to put their two cents in?” Then it donned on Quinna that the antiquating saying was just that, antiquated. “Meaning. Does anyone have anything to add or say?” (Reply, Miller, Revenstone, Trei, Dalton) (Played by KrisB) (USS Illuminar - Holodeck 2 - ACOUNS ACMO Ariel Trei - 20.05) Quinna asked if anybody wanted to add to her introduction. She was Betazoid so she was pretty outgoing. She introduced herself. "I am Ariel Trei. I am half Betazoid and Half Klingon. I am the head counselor and will help Quinna in sickbay. There is no need to be apprehensive. Feel free to talk to me about anything you need to." With that she went back to her seat and grabbed a couple more strawberry tarts. She also poured some Betazoid wine and drank a bit before placing the cup back on the table. The wine was good. She understood being professional, Kathy was professional to the point of obsession, but even she learned to relax. Sometimes. "I just wanted to say thank you to Doctor Solice for choosing me for this assignment. I've served only on Earth and on Mars, so I'm thrilled to be on a starship now. I am specialized in diplomatic and first contact and have no real medical skills other than the first aid training that every officer gets. I don't see that it would be a terrible idea for me to learn some of the skills that Counselor Trei will be learning too." Alaya ran a hand through her bright blue hair, "As counselors usually say, my door is open and in my case it always is." When she smiled, she dimpled. "Nima, why don't you tell us a little bit more about you? We were all stationed together on Mars and got to know each other fairly well, and it can be difficult to break into that." Alaya was sending out soothing waves to calm down Nima who seemed so nervous. He was still sizing up the crew and his department mates. New postings were always interesting and on top of that a new ship. He’d been traveling for days first from Star Fleet Earth, then Utopia Planitia, now onboard the Illuminar assigned in engineering. The paint on his ensign bars were still drying. Nearly fresh out of the Academy he was lost, confused and overwhelmed. Admrial Notchea warned him of this during his commencement speech. Nonetheless, he tried to take everything in stride, but had to wonder if this was ’normal’ for Star Fleet duty? Everything seemed in a rush, unplanned and chaotic. ~Whew~ he thought as he entered his assigned quarters. The duty roaster already showed he was behind and had several meetings to attend. He’d managed to enjoy the launch of the new ship, but felt out of place. He hadn’t been able to check in with his CO, nor make any friends. That would all come in time. Right now he was tired, hungry and still feeling under the weather. He’d checked in with the doctor in sickbay and was given a hypospray of some toxin he was sure would kill him and told to rest as much as possible. ~Yeah right.~ He put down his pack and looked around. The quarters were cramped, but better than he’d had it anywhere so far. ~First thing, first…food.~ He tapped the control panel on the replicator. “Computer…breakfast number 3, coffee hot.” [Unable to comply. She told everyone that if they wanted to watch the departure that they could go to one of the empty crew quarters on deck to watch the departure from spacedock. She was always amazed at the process. Ten minutes later, Quinna was back in her office and started going through the list of the day. This was definitely different from the night shift that she was fond of working. (USS Illuminar -- Meeting Room -- Deck 1 -- CMO Lt. J.G. Quinna Solice -- 1406) Quinna had been sitting quietly at the table with her PADD on the table in front of her. The Captain had called for reports. She nodded to Ariel that she should give the counseling report first. She wasn’t sure if Ariel was reading her or if she understood the signal, but she smiled when Ariel began. "Counseling is ready for appointments . Simba and Dumbo are in my office for comfort if they are needed. Simba is the plush lion I bought on Trill. Dumbo is the plush Elephant I bought on Trill. I am ready to assist LT Solice in sickbay when needed." Trei finished her report which led perfectly into Quinna’s report. “Sickbay is also 100% ready and functional. All equipment is accounted for. And I have also confirmed the location of med kits on all levels including the one on the bridge and three located in engineering.” And with that Quinna finished her report. Illuminar is scheduled to enter warp in five minutes after clearing the gravity well of Jupiter All systems are showing green and the officers and crew have performed flawlessly. The command crew is well acquainted and working together in concert and I foresee no issues arising. Both Lieutenant Verin and Lieutenant Peters are fine officers and will command their own ships in the future, for now they are an extension of my reach and a complement to my team. Lieutenant Solice is bringing her department together like the professional I anticipated and Stennin and Alyl will be an outstanding science team. Ensign Taya is well versed in the new technology we designed into the ship and with the addition of a veteran like Chief Tamblyn In operations this ship is well staffed. The Illuminar is one of two ships that has been sent to Bajor as a diplomatic show of solidarity to the Bajoran people and a reassurance that they have not been abandoned. We will help in any way needed, we will serve our purpose as the extended hand of the Federation and we will fulfill our commission wherever StarFleet sends us. This is the commission of the officers and crew of the USS Illuminar. To serve the Federation to the limit of our abilities, to seek peace wherever we are sent while being prepared for war and to bring light wherever we go as the ship's name signifies." End log." He deactivated the unit and it retracted into armrest. "Lieutenant Grey Wolf confirm course for Bajor." "Course confirmed sir and warp is ready. Clearing Jupiter's gravity well.... now. Warp available." He leaned forward slightly. "Engage." The hum of the warp field generators rose as the low level harmonics were carried by the ship's hull. (Reply Sekal, all) (Posted by Jono Bradley) (USS Illuminar - Deck 1, Meeting Room -FSXO (Flight Ops/Conn)- Lieutenant (SG), Tempest Grey Wolf-- 1403) The meeting started right on time and she was all for that. There was much to do and the sooner it started and ended the better. The command crew appeared to be a close knit unit which Tempest had not seen very often, she had been at several postings in the Fleet and had seen it all which was more than there was time to go into but a command crew that knew one another and worked as one was the easiest to work for. While they had their own command styles they would be seeking the same level of professionalism and accountability. This pleased the Cherokee and she stood to her feet for the report. "Flight controls are responding well and the ship is operating at peak level at this time. I have gone over the reports for the support craft, shuttles and work bees and they appear to be in excellent condition but I have not as of yet had opportunity to fly them. Every pilot feels different things when they fly, how their craft responds and their idiosyncrasies. I would like to test them in flight at the earliest opportunity." She then sat and listened to the reports from the other senior officers. After those were completed the command crew went through their briefing. Bajor was well known, a staunch supporter of the Federation, there should be nothing of concern there. But in her minds eye she saw the fires from the wolf dream laid out like stars upon a sea of green. A good navigator could see the location of their destination in three dimensions and were well acquainted with a star map. Upon that green field in the location of Bajor had been one of those fires and she knew they did not stand for suns but for trouble. She knew something bad awaited them at Bajor, she didn't know what it was but her guardian Spirit had shown her this and had never, would never deceive her. Trouble was coming, of this she was sure. She had cleaned her hands, made sure her hair was nice, grabbed a PADD, and hurried off to deck 1. Arriving just in time, she had found an empty seat. Sekal opened the meeting, followed by departmental reports from Ariel and Doctor Solice. There was a moment of silence, so Taya took her turn. "Captain, shortly after we left space dock, we had the same situation with power not being evenly distributed that we had on the bridge. We ran a diagnostic and found the problem. Over the last few hours, we haven't had any fluctuations. We were running at 40%, but a quick adjustment to the intermix chamber got us back to 35. Aside from that, we're running smoothly." As she gave her report, Taya's stomach was fluttering. This was her first formal mission briefing as acting chief and all eyes were on her. Giving a tactical report was easy. It was completely different as an engineer. She hoped she sounded like one and not like a sec/tac. Setting her PADD back on the table, she sat quietly and waited for whatever was coming next. (reply any) (posted by Rob) (USS Illuminar - Deck 1, Meeting Room - CO- Lieutenant Commander Sekal - 1415) After the reports were completed Sekal nodded. "Communications with Bajor were becoming increasingly scarce even before the election of the current President. As is well known Bajor is distant from the Federation core worlds, borders Cardassian space and is the location of starbase Deep Space Nine." He activated the holographic feature of the table and the planet and starbase came into existence above it along with a nearby point that denoted a vortex or wormhole. "Bajor is also the location of the only stable wormhole known to exist and so is a hub world between the alpha and gamma quadrants. Its location makes it the most important center for possible trade, diplomatic relations and exploration of that quadrant. It is also vulnerable to attack as was highlighted during the Dominion war." He then leaned forward slightly. "Bajor has a small defensive force but has relied on the Federation for protection. As the first two ships inaugurated into the new fleet Illuminar and Exeter have been sent to Bajor to remind them that they are not alone and the Federation is committed to their support. We will be dealing primarily with the Bajoran government while the Exeter stands by in support." He looked around the table at his officers. "We will be available to help them in whatever capacity is required therefore your departments will stand ready to assist. I will make the initial overtures to the government. No difficulties are expected but we shall be prepared nonetheless." He then looked at Sienna. "Lieutenant Verin has an item to bring forward. Lieutenant you have the floor." She had been so proud of her officers, especially those that were taking steps into new territory - Taya in engineering and Trei in sickbay as well as counseling. Sekal reiterated what Sienna already know - they were going to Bajor to generate good press, to make the planet feel included, to renew the bond to the alpha/gamma quadrant. But then Sekal turned to her, surprising her. "Lieutenant Verin has an item to bring forward. Lieutenant you have the floor." Sy stood up, knowing that height for a short person meant confidence, or so it was taught in the Academy psych classes and lord knew Sy was a short girl. "In my studies and preparation for this mission I ran across a journal paper that was about the aging and infirm on Bajor, particularly those who were alive during the occupation and some of the problems that are being caused. There is a degenerative mental disease that affects mostly those who were forced to work in the ore processing during the occupation. The Vulcans have made a great deal of scientific advancement with their Bendii syndrome and I want to see if those techniques could be applied to aid the bajoran elderly. Dr. Solice, Medic Trei and Counselor Ravenstone will be working with me once we arrive. Dr. Solice, I will have the files forwarded to both you and Counselor Trei - Counselor Ravenstone, I would like you in particular to smooth the way, caregivers can sometimes be reluctant to accept help and you have extensive diplomatic training. " She sat back down in her chair. Carson Peters spoke next, from a security standpoint. Which reminded Sienna - "Department heads, get me your shore leave rosters 48 hours before arrival so that I can approve them. We had issues on the Mystique with an emergency and understaffed departments and that will not happen here." Sienna's heart pounded with emotional pain remembering that. "As Lt. Peters said, there will be dissidents who will not want the Federation there. Bajorans are a proud, solitary people and are easily offended and angered, or so the species index notes. Be very polite around their religion, please. The Admirality might take our shiny new ship away if there are any less than positive reports. We are on stage, people, and will be while the Federation is showing us off. Once more ships are commissioned and retrofitted, the spotlight will be off us." She smiled tensely, ever aware with two parents high in the ranks that everything always needed to be perfect on this mission. She took a sip from her coffee and resumed listening. (reply any present) (posted by Mel) (USS Illuminar - Deck 1, Meeting Room - 2O, Lt(sg) Carson Peters - 1417) Carson listened intently to Sekal as he continued to brief the staff. Though he'd heard all the information previously, he was interested in seeing the reactions from the rest of the senior staff. The mission effectively boiled down to travelling to Bajor, making nice with the locals, showing them their impressive arsenal and then bugging out once Starfleet had decided on their next direction of travel. Their mission to Trill last year however had shown Carson just how troublesome these diplomatic missions could turn out to be. So when the Captain handed the meeting over to Carson his focus was on making sure the Senior Staff had this in mind, "Lieutenant Peters do you have anything to add?" Sekal asked as all the faces in the room turned to look at him, "Only a few things, Sir." he cleared his throat and then began, "I'm sure you're all excited by the prospect of visiting Bajor. Once we arrive however, I would like to remind everyone of the Security measures that will be put into place. During shoreleave if you are leaving the ship to travel to the planet, you are required to be in pairs and report your whereabouts if they shift. Bajor is an ally, but that does not mean there aren't dissedent portions of their population which would very much like to show Starfleet and the Federation up. Stay Safe and Report anything suspicious." He was probably being way over the top, but there was no way he was going to lose anyone on their first mission. (Reply all present) (Posted by Jono Bradley) (Illuminar, Deck 1, Meeting Room, Acting CEO Ensign sg Taya, 1418) After all departments had given their reports, Sekal revealed their mission was to Bajor. It was basically reaching out an assuring hand of friendship and a show of force demonstrating that Starfleet was on its way back. That really didn't concern Taya, as she wasn't the diplomatic type. Learning the nuances of the Illuminar and making sure the new crystal drive performed as expected, was her priority. When it was time for Williams-Verin to talk, she stood up. She talked about a degenerative mental disease that affected the elderly that worked as slave labor in the ore processing facility in the time of the occupation, which ended nearly 80 years ago. Taya understood expansion and conquest, or fighting to protect loves ones and property, but she never understood the cruelty of what the Cardassians did. Carson was next. He stated that anyone going to Bajor had to travel with at least one other person. He referenced problems that happened on Trill. That was clearly about Taya being attacked. Because of that, she seriously considered staying on the ship. Carson also wanted lists of people going on leave. Everything was pretty straightforward. Taya appreciated being at the staff briefing, but she found she was anxious to get back to engineering. Only a few hours out and she was already feeling the new drive was her engines. She liked that. Once he had discerned what their presence was about, he apologised to the school children he was leading in prayer and dispatched Vedek Gele to gather more information. All he could do now was wait, they would not allow the Dean Vedek to see Kai Hetel until it was clear that she was in no clear danger and was no danger to him. This he didn’t mind, a devout man as he was, a vein of self preservation was a health portion of his life. A fit and muscular older man with ambitions bigger than his muscles, he was generally well liked amongst his peers and had risen to the Deanship with unanimous vote. The only person that seemed to have an issue with him was Hetel. He always thought she seemed to have a way of seeing through him, her ethereal nature gave him the jeebies and in his view was far too young to have risen to the power she now had. This fainting exercise was most likely a plea for media attention. All the same, some years ago he had put in motion several plans, one of which, if the time was correct may just succeed in reducing her power within the Temple greatly. They wore ornate garb which was not armor but distinguished them from the priests and acolytes by virtue of the bands of gold and scarlet upon their shoulders and down their sleeves. The defensive weaponry they carried was modeled on an ancient design, bladed and lethal. Each one carried a phaser as well since the bladed weapons were mostly ceremonial but the Federation weaponry was cunningly concealed within pouches at their sides which could be quickly opened and the weapons retrieved. "The Dean of Vedeks is under protection." The guard eyed Jisel firmly though without suspicion. "He is expecting my report Hravi." "One moment." Vedek Gele waited patiently while the guard contacted the Dean, the other guard wasn't even looking at him but watching the hallway in both directions. Jisel had been chosen he knew because he had a repoir with the Kai that few others enjoyed and she would tell him in confidence what she would confide to no one else. This unsettled him somewhat, the idea that he could one day be asked to betray a confidence. At this time however there was nothing she had said that could be considered personal and confidential. The vision might have ramifications they could not yet foresee. "You may enter." Hravi opened the door for him and he slid inside and walked through the parlor of the suite to the Dean's office. "Vedek Horavei I have returned to report that Kai Hetel is awake and alert." He said upon entering the office and he took up a standing position before him with his arms folded. Delay no further. Tell me of what she saw." The Dean of Vedeks appeared curious for certain of this but Jisel had sensed a hesitation or stiffness in him when he had received word of the Kai's status. Jisel certainly wasn't blind to such an undertone though there could be a number of reasons for it. Anything from disliking the Kai to back room scheming. Whatever his reasoning wasn't important however, as members of the Vedek council they had duties to perform. Jisel sat in a chair as he cleared his thoughts and concentrated on what she had told him. "The vision was in two parts. In one she saw a tree and tried to take shelter under it from the heat but the leaves died and fell from the tree." His gaze bored into the other man's eyes because of the next. "In the second part the Emissary appeared to her and spoke. He said that if the roots of the tree are not healthy then the leaves die and that is the way of all life. What he was speaking of is unclear but the import of the message is chilling." "This is disturbing and far more important than previously expected. I require time to think this over. Organise for the assembely council to convene in the next day or so. We must seek out the knowledge we need to uncover the truth on this message." Vedek Gele rose to his feet. "It shall be done. I will start sending out word tonight. There are many that may take some time to arrive of course but they will all know of the summons." He hurried to the door and stepped out, there were many who needed to be called and there was no way of knowing how much time they had to consider the message, it could be days or years. The time she had taken to rest after her collapse in the rectory had helped for a scant two days and the malaise had returned full force immediately after. The substance of the visions she had received from the orbs had become no clearer to her either, they had merely been warnings of coming danger. Except for the last vision of course. Her breathing became labored as she attempted to scale a small rise leading to the atrium and she fell to her knees. The impact with the gravel caused lancing pain which cut agonizingly through her weariness. "Kai!" The shout was followed immediately by hands on both her arms pulling her to her feet as attendants who had been watching her tortured progress intervened. She was hoisted between two men as she protested weakly, the screaming in her knees lessened as she was carried between them. The sky overhead had been clouding up noticeably in the last few minutes as if in sympathy to her suffering. "Put… me… down." "No." The voice of the attendant on her left was firm as she was carried along. "We have watched you suffer enough for today. We will take you to your chamber." She didn't feel like protesting any further as they crossed the threshold into the temple and down the long hallway decked with ornate tapestries of dyed fabric exquisitely woven. Even the light seemed subdued to her vision. "What is going on? Who called for a physician?" A voice echoed down the corridor. "The Kai is ill, where is her physician?" "He did not feel well today so is not available. Take her aside to the vestibule near the main sanctuary." The vestibule was not far and they were there within a few minutes. She was lowered to a couch and sank into it gratefully then turned painfully to face her attendants and the new physician who had arrived. She groaned as he pulled out a medical unit and began scanning her. He repeated the procedure then ran it a third time. Finally he cursed and gave up. "I can find nothing wrong… with any of them. This makes no sense." He turned to her bearers. Take her to her chamber and designate a female to help her get dressed for bed. She needs rest and nutrition by the Prophets. Take her now!" Her bearers closed in on her again and were lifting her from the couch when she passed out. Grumbling to himself and pulling at the main drawer until he remembered it was locked. Pulling out a golden key from around his neck, he opened the drawer and pulled out a datapadd, set that aside on his desk and lifted a large ornate wooden box out. Staring at the box for a full minute, he decided against using what was inside just yet ~Still too early, I can contact Janus at the last possible moment.~ He placed the box back inside the drawer, put the datapadd back on top of it and relocked them both in. Just as he placed the golden key back around his neck and into his robes there was a knock at the door. "Enter and be quick about it." he bellowed. The door opened to admit in Ranjen Sifal, "Sifal I don't have time to rehash this argument." The Ranjen walked in slowly and calmly with her arms in the air, "and I am not the one to be having it with, Dean. I am only here to check in with you, how did the Council meeting go?" she took a seat presumptively and waited. "As was expected. They're all fools but they will not change my mind. The message was that the roots of the tree were failing... ROTTEN even!" "Hmmhmm" came the sound from the Ranjen. "I believe the exact phrasing was, 'if the roots of the tree are not fed and healthy then the leaves die.' I think the other Vedek's are having trouble seeing how that means they should all be locked up and left to die inside the temple as you have ordered." "The Assembly will abide by my wishes." he said grumpily, "With the Kai unconscious, I am the one the Prophets has chosen to make this decision." "and if the Kai dies because of this?" "Then that is exactly why we need the Vedeks here! They will be called upon to elect a new Kai and I won't be having the entire planet waiting on them. Here I will keep them so here they will stay. They could put themselves to use by praying for her safe revival and hope she comes back to us with news from the Prophets." "and the council agrees?" "Enough of them do. The roots of the tree clearly refer to the Kai and her team. Either she will recover and come back stronger than before, renewing our faith or the Prophets are done with her and we will replace the roots with someone stronger. Someone better." He stared directly into the eyes of his aide and a hint of a smile appeared on her face. "Of course Dean." she bowed her head. "I will have parts of the grounds segregated to place those infected by this malaise. Vedek Gele, the Kai's aide and her doctor have all fallen ill with weakness already." "Isolate them for the sake of the rest. I will contact the High Committeemen and give them the council's verdict." The door closed swiftly behind the Ranjen and Horavei found himself alone once again. (Reply none needed) (Posted by Jono Bradley - Vedek Horavei Taelsi)
