He sat in the living room of his familyÕs mountain home, watching the run rise over the distant hills, mulling over what the Prophets had told him. Why him? Why now? And why not give any more specific instructions? A gust of harsh wind kicked up a cloud of dust from the property and it blew across, obscuring his vision before swirling like a dust devil before him which shrank until taking form. From it emerged the uniformed figure, Sisko turned and looked around at the sunrise before turning back to Jaton with a smile that looked out of place on him. His face appeared more suited to a scowl or a hard edged glare but was now lit by a fire from within which burned peacefully. "A beautiful place to be É", he rumbled, "... we all have such times in our lives and they are to be cherished. When the others first contacted me I lived in a far different place, a tragic place and had for years." He turned away to take in the Vista once more. "It took time for Dax to understand what I had gone through, perhaps he never did completely É" ÒTo be honest,Ó Jaton began, leaning back, ÒIÕm still coming to terms with that myself. IÕve lost so much that IÕll never get back again. 25 yearsÉÓ He took a deep breath. ÒI woke up in Sickbay one day to find that the two sons I didnÕt even know I had were now grown men. My brothers were old men. My parentsÉÓ he trailed off as a tear rolled down his cheek. He turned to Sisko. ÒWhy? Why me? Why wait so long?Ó The man turned back to him and looked down, the smile softened without losing its luster before he walked to another chair and pulled it out then sat down facing him. He crossed his legs and studied Jaton for a moment before speaking. "Yes you have lost time and that is something that can never be regained. The others have only the barest understanding of this and that only through me. I lost time as well in a way, my pain kept me locked in a time of loss." He stopped speaking for a moment before continuing. "To you many years have passed, to the others it is only the merest flicker in a timeless existence. What meaning can three decades have for those who have no understanding of linear time? Who's beginning cannot be remembered? The short answer is you were brought forward at a chosen moment with no regard for the intervening period. Not because of heartlessness but at a time of need. To you an unfortunate circumstance for which I have understanding. But how can I offer an apology for those who do not understand? It would be empty and have no meaning." ÒBut why, of all the trillions of people in the galaxy, did it have to be me that had their life ripped away?Ó Jaton asked, desperately. "Why you?" Sisko's smile seemed to grow. "A question humanity has struggled with since the awakening of existence. To be condemned to a life seemingly bereft of meaning or moving forward out of obscurity to be in the vanguard stepping out of a comfortable life into the unknown. A question for which there are few answers it would seem. Why not you Jaton Alyl? Was it better in the timeless void where you would never know your children or see your family again? Was it preferable to complete your existence in a terrifying instant never to be seen again? To be buried decades later for your family to grieve over after many years?" ÒWait,Ó Jaton said. ÒAre you saying what I think youÕre saying? Did the Prophets arrange my death?Ó The man looked at him closely. "Brought you back yes, had you killed?" He shook his head. "I did not say that." Jaton began to hyperventilate. ÒNo, I canÕt believe this. How could they do this to me? I had a whole life. And it was taken in the blink of an eye. ItÕs not fair!Ó Jaton melted into sobs, feeling very small. As he repeated ÒItÕs not fairÓ over and over, his voice continued to get higher, softer and lighter. As he took his hands away from his face, he looked at them. They were a childÕs hands. And he had a childÕs voice. The one often called "The Sisko" sat back and watched him silently, waiting to see where this would lead. The being before him had undergone much, was going through more but the future ahead would be darker still before the light began to dawn. It had been so with him. Growth did not come without troubles. ÒHow can I hope to be what you want me to be when IÕm in such turmoil?Ó the young boy asked. How can I help others if I canÕt even help myself?Ó "Have you been asked to do anything?" Sisko smiled again warmly. "It isn't time yet and you aren't ready. When the time comes you will know." He gave him a piercing look. "And you will be ready." The boyÕs sobs ebbed, but tears still flowed down his cheeks. ÒAnd how will I know when IÕm ready? How am I supposed to know anything?Ó The Sisko shook his head. "There are limits to what I can tell you without breaking events which is why there is so much cryptic speech and vague warnings. Watch for the signs, they will guide you." Somehow this helped. The boy was able to somewhat compose himself. He looked up at the man, a pleading look in his eyes. ÒAnd please, if you can, can you be there to help me and guide me? I cannot do this on my own.Ó Sisko stood to his feet. "I'll be around."Jaton nodded. As the sun peaked above the ridgeline, he began to feel better. And bigger. And more determined. "Maybe I can do this after all."(reply none)(posted by Spencer and Charles)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>(USS Illuminar - Sickbay -- Deck 5 -- CSO Lieutenant (jg) Jaton Alyl, CMO/3XO Lt. Quinna Solice, Medic Klinger -- 0425)JatonÕs eyes fluttered open, and was met with a view of the ceiling in Sickbay. He took a deep breath, and tried to sit up.Medic Klinger had been walking around sickbay when he noticed the movement in the isolation room. He turned to see the young man had awaken. He moved to the his side and looked at him. ÒYou need to stay where you are at.Ó Klinger told the young man. ÒMedic Klinger to Dr. Solice.Ó Klinger needed to call the Doctor.ÓÒSolice hereÓ Quinna said. She had been engaged in other activities. ÒYoung Alyl is awake.Ó Klinger said.ÒI am on my way.Ó Quinna jumped up and headed sickbay.Klinger turned back to Jaton. ÒHow are you feeling?ÓJaton had tried to sit up, and failed. He held his head with his left hand. ÒLike the Illuminar ran me over. Where am I? What happened?Ó Klinger looked at the man, ÒYeah, you are not going to be able to get up. You are rather attached to the bed. Only Dr. Solice can release you from the bed. She should be around shortly.Ó Klinger tried to console the man. ÒHuh, figures,Ó Jaton said, relaxing into the bed once again.ÒAs we wait for Dr. Solice, is there anyone you would like me to get ahold of while you wait?Ó Kiinger offered.Jaton was about to say no, but then he thought for a minute. ÒYes. I need to speak to the captain.ÓJust at that moment, Quinna walked up. ÒJaton, she moved to his side and touched his hand.Ó ÒDoctor. ItÕs good to see you,Ó Jaton said as QuinnaÕs face came into view.He seemed remarkably healthy. His body took the time to heal itself. ÒI suppose you want to move.Ó Quinna released the restrains that were holding Jaton still and controlling his bodily systems.Jaton took a deep breath on his own, feeling a rush of fresh air fill his lungs.Quinna put in her codes. She reached her hand out to help Jaton sit up. Jaton took her hand, and pushed himself up to a sitting position, swinging his legs over the side of the biobed.ÒWhat happened, doctor? How long was I out?ÓÒTake it easy.Ó Quinna said as she put an arm around him. (I am assuming this is taking place before Day 1 of the new mission. Perhaps Day 19 of the last mission? Probably Day 1 of the new mission tbh) You have been her almost 3 weeks. I almost sent you back to Earth for long term care. I am glad I didnÕt.Ó Quinna said. ÒYou were wounded when the Illuminar was boarded.Ó Quinna said.Jaton let out a breath. He was dizzy, but was slowly getting his bearings. ÒThree weeks. At least I havenÕt lost 25 years. Again,Ó he said with a dark chortle. ÒI seem to remember what happened.ÓÒWhat do you remember?Ó Quinna asked, knowing what she said may influence his answer.Jaton closed his eyes. ÒThe labs were on fire. Structural integrity was compromised. I was helping lead the evacuation, making sure my team was out before I left myself. I heard a cracking in the ceiling. And then I woke up here.ÓÒYou are Lucky. You have healed amazingly. Lets see of we can get you moved into a general sickbay bio bed.Ó Quinna made notes in the 3D interface. ÒIÕll need your help, I think,Ó Jaton said. He shuffled forward a little, until his right foot made contact with the floor. He started to put weight on it, and then started to stand up. He groaned, felt his leg start to shake, and give way. HeÕd have collapsed in a heap on the floor had the doctor not caught him under his arms.ÒYou should lay back down. DonÕt over do it.Ó Quinna said.ÒI think youÕre right, doctor.Ó He braced himself against Solice, and was able to lift himself back onto the bed. He swung his legs back onto the bed, with just a bit more effort than he would normally need, and lay back down.ÒAny idea how long IÕll be here for?ÓÒI would say atleast two nights. More depending on how long it takes for your bodily functions to take over and you need to be able to eat.Ó Quinna answered.ÒIÕll do my best to get out of your hair as soon as possible, doctor,Ó Jaton said with a smile.Quinna smiled, ÒEhh, you re good. You are one of my best patients.Ó Quinna turned to go back to the office. She needed to make the arrangements on the next steps in Jaton release back to duty.ÒOh, and doctor?ÓÒYes, Jaton?ÓÒThank you. I know that taking care of my unconscious body for the last three weeks must have been quite trying. But I canÕt tell you how much I appreciate it. I donÕt know what the doctors wouldÕve done had I been on Trill.ÓQuinna crossed back ofer that took Jaton hand, ÒIt is a good thing that you do not have to know. You are with family in my sickbay.Ó Quinna patted his hand witht he hand tht was not holding the hand and then released him, ÒLets see if I cannot provide you better accommodations.Ó(Reply none)(Posted by Spencer and Kris B)DAY 1>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>(USS Illuminar - Deck 1 - Bridge 2/O LCDR Dieter Gregory - 0850)Gregory and Lieutenant Menzi were both busy monitoring the communications bursts between the Starship and the Station. If you see any subversion enacted into that node shut it down until it can be purged."Gregory nodded, "Aye Sir. Setting up the node now.Ó A few moments passed as the officer worked on the solution. "It is done," he said, turning his eyes to T'shalaith. "Science, you are clear on node 5. We are running an automatic trap and trace on the node for any anomalous behaviour as a failsafe." Gregory called out.T'shalaith gave a nod, tapping her fingers across the console as the node opened and secured. She then took the work TÕMur had suggested along with the CaptainÕs ideas and combined the path and programming into the nodeÕs process. Her eyes searched the console screen for an expected time and it blinked back, ÔExpected Completion 1300 hoursÕ. She felt a frown tug at her face but resisted it. If she had been human, she would have expressed concerns that something felt ÔoffÕ with the data they were extrapolating. The idea of a sixth sense in humans was a misnomer to her. However, for a Vulcan, or a Betazoid, or any kind of alien species given to extrasensory perception it was accepted that indeed the tingling sense of concern wasnÕt generally to be ignored and should be pursued and interrogated. She had long ago concluded most humans made up hunches because they were more uncomfortable with the situation versus actually knowing something was, as they would say, ÔupÕ.At least thatÕs what T'shalaith believed at her core. She had studied enough about the various aliens in the universe and their inherent understood and misunderstood and not fully understood abilities to know - as illogical as it might be - you didnÕt ignore a hunch. SheÕd read enough of Sherlock Holmes and more to know the power of perception and investigation. Her father had often mused that Sherlock must have been a hidden or forgotten Vulcan and John his put upon human assistant. She returned her wandering attention to the problem at hand. It took her a moment but her focusing techniques shoved Sherlock and John Watson behind a barred door in her mind. SheÕd have to talk to her holo-father about her focusing problems. Her eyes searched the ongoing decryption process quietly wondering to herself if the condition she was experiencing was having an effect on her ability to think logically and process the task at hand. There was plenty of impossibility in what she was seeing and what they had discovered. Ruling out as much of the impossible was the task and it was going to take some time. The IlluminarÕs computer was an incredible machine and T'shalaith couldnÕt expect to match it. But she should work alongside it and see what was being left behind as the various pieces of the mystery were unveiled.T'shalaith hunched over the console and began to work in tandem with the computer decrypting.(reply none)(posted by Aaron DeLay)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>(USS Illuminar - Deck 6, CSOÕs Office - CSO Lieutenant (jg) Jaton Alyl and ACSO Ensign T'shalaith - 0930)T'shalaith sat at the desk of the Chief Science Officer. The reports needing attention had grown considerably throughout the day's events and she had been tasked with handling the main shift on the bridge. She had spent the previous night working to manage the reports and responsibilities that she was handling. There had been a recent development and she had made part of her responsibilities the evening before to ensure the office was logically back in the state it had been left to her in. Her commanding officer had returned to duty.It was JatonÕs first shift back since waking up. He still had the occasional twinge of pain, but it was subsiding. And more than anything he was grateful that he hadnÕt woken up another 25 years in the future. Everyone was still there, waiting for him. With one addition. He rounded the corner and stepped through the doorway into his office to see his chair already occupied by a young Vulcan, an ensignÕs pips on her collar.ÒOh, good morning,Ó Jaton said, politely but with a hint of surprise in his voice. ÒI guess they didnÕt tell you I was coming back today.ÓT'shalaith quietly stood and gave the returning chief a nod, ÒI was informed of the change in your condition late yesterday, Lieutenant Alyl. I wanted to ensure your office was returned to you in the condition that you left it, as much as possible.Ó She stepped out from behind the desk and slipped past him to take her place in the door. ÒThe desk is yours, sir.ÓJaton countered, and took his place behind the desk. ÒWell to be honest,Ó he began, Òthe last time I saw this office it was literally in flames. So itÕs looking much better than I found it. I love what youÕve done with the place.Ó He smiled as he sat. The smile faded awkwardly as the jest flew soundlessly over the VulcanÕs head and settled in the room like a blanket of uncomfortable forced humour.Jaton readjusted himself and crossed his legs. ÒHave a seat, ensign.ÓThe Vulcan science officer offered a PADD with reports indexed by subject, time, and personnel, ÒYouÕll find that most of the crew stepped up to assist where was needed in your absence. I made a few notes on crew dynamics you may wish to investigate further to gather your own understanding. IÕve also included relevant logs from my brief time as Acting Chief for your review and approval.ÓJaton took the PADD, and scrolled through it, nodding. ÒThis is superb work. Thank you very much, ensignÉÓThe former acting chief resisted the urge to frown. It seemed illogical that her superior officer was not aware of the changes that had occurred in his absence. Had he not been briefed by anyone in command upon waking up? It was most irregular to her. T'shalaith considered once more the ways she operated were often in opposition to others in their ways. It fascinated her, and she filed it away for a future research proposal or two. ÒEnsign T'shalaith.ÓÒTÕShalaith. ItÕs an honour to make your acquaintance.Ó Jaton gave the Vulcan salute with his right hand.If she had been human, she might have experienced a feeling similar to what might pass for bemusement. If she had been human. Being Vulcan she returned the gesture, wondering what her new chiefÕs experience with Vulcans had been in the past. The captain was of course, and TÕMur...but she had begun to wonder if her Ideology was more fundamental than the others onboard. She had always known she was significantly different from other Vulcans in the universe but it was becoming clear those differences were more dire than sheÕd first hypothesized. ÒLieutenant, I feel I must ask for clarityÕs sake - what experience have you had working with Vulcans?Ó She paused, ÒThe Captain is of course, and Lieutenant TÕMur is as wellÉÓ, she paused again, ÒI wonder if youÕve encountered more fundamental Vulcans in your travels and service in Starfleet.ÓJaton was intrigued to say the least. ÒMore fundamental? In what way?ÓShe considered for a moment, ÒMy colony was and is quite...strict when it comes to observance of the Vulcan practice of logic and removal of emotions.Ó She considered for a moment, ÒThere is a similar concept in humanityÕs history with the various divisions that existed within the Protestant Faith. Some were more concerned and adherent to the law and the written scriptures while others practiced a more liberal faith. Those that hewed closer and harsher to the foundations and cornerstones of the belief were known as fundamentalists.Ó She contemplated her next words, ÒI am only becoming aware of my differences with more traditional and, at times, liberal members of my people. I was looking to gather as much useful information in my attempt to determine a path forward...not just with you as my superior officer, but the rest of the Illumunar crew as well.ÓJaton sat, contemplating for a moment. ÒI think I understand, ensign. I must confess I donÕt have too much knowledge regarding traditional Vulcan lifestyles or spirituality. So if you would prefer, I will take my cues from you. I am willing to learn and I hope if I step over a line, youÕll feel you can correct me. After all, as the Vulcans say, infinite diversity in infinite combination. And I want to respect who you are and what you believe.ÓTÕShalaith gave a slight nod. Working with the many multiples of aliens in Starfleet was something sheÕd accepted would have to be tolerated if she was to get anywhere in her postings. She again wondered if her ongoing condition was adding additional parts and pieces to her interactions that she normally wouldnÕt intend. SheÕd have to do several tests against the baselines sheÕd established with the Chief Medical Officer to verify the validity of her concerns, but that would come later. At the moment she was still navigating the return of her commanding science officer and what it would mean for her as he returned to active duty. ÒI can accept your terms, Lieutenant. I will offer a compromise in the same, as the humans would say, vein. If my actions or words violate the professional standards and expectations of my position, I would be amenable to a discussion regarding my actions.Ó She thought for a moment, ÒYou have just returned to duty, and I am sure there is much you need to, as the humans say, catch up on. I can take my leave of you and return to my office to resume the duties of my position.ÓIt was something subtle, but Jaton felt some unease coming off the young ensign. ÒBefore I dismiss you,Ó he began, ÒI just wanted to ask. Is everything alright? Is there anything on your mind?ÓTÕShalaith raised an eyebrow. She was aware of this method of interrogation. It was what doctors used with patients when they suspected there was one more thing they needed to hear from the patient. She didnÕt discount AlylÕs ability to sense that something was indeed wrong. She contemplated what to tell him and how much needed to be shared at this time. The CMO hadnÕt suggested she share it, and TÕShalaith had made it clear that she wanted it kept in medical records for now. She shifted on her feet, an unusual show of her feeling slightly uncomfortable. ÒYou are perceptive, Lieutenant Alyl. It is a temporary condition and IÕm under care of the Chief Medical Officer with a treatment plan in hand. At this time it does not interfere with my ability to perform my duties and responsibilities.Ó She paused before she finished, ÒYour concern is noted. I will notify you if my condition requires me to step aside from my duties at any time.ÓÒSee that you do. IÕm of the philosophy that the work comes second to the people. And I wonÕt treat you any differently. And if you ever need a proverbial shoulder to cry on, IÕm here. IÕve been through more than my fair share of rough times myself, so IÕll be more than happy to provide a sympathetic ear.ÓThe former acting chief gave a quiet nod, and the now assistant chief science officer spoke, ÒYou words are welcomed, Lieutenant. IÕll return to my station.Ó She stepped back and was nearly on her way when she turned, caught his eye, and said one last thing before moving on her way, ÒWelcome back, Chief.ÓJaton flashed her a smile. He never understood how facing pain sticks would prepare you for being a warrior, but he was not Klingon. He faced his demons every time he free-climbed some new rock, and there, on the mountain, did you learn the real you and how far you could push yourself. The energy was not balancing. The graph showed a plot of speed versus CochraneÕs factor. The red line indicated the approximate value in most of federation space, that is 1292.7238, while the green line was the value in the void, where the absence of stars and planets drove the value to 1. On a separate screen was a plot of the theoretical and practical energy yields of different elements ranging from plutonium-235, 238, and 239, as well as a matter/antimatter explosion. If they were to create a stable wormhole through time, of sufficient size that probes and shuttles could be sent through it, they needed to find a way to reduce CochraneÕs factor, and increase the energy output of the driving force. ÒKirk and Spock on the Bounty. Feynman and the dragon's tail. Slotin and the Demon core,Ó the Tamarian said in an exasperated tone. Penn looked at the calculations Teller had just done and gave a deep sigh. ÒEmmett Brown and Marty McFly with the DeLorean. Emmett Brown hanging the clock,Ó he finally said thinking that they needed some new thought. But was it a new thought they needed?Suddenly he went to a monitor and tapped it to life. What they needed was a way for the energy of reaction to be compressed into a finite space. They literally needed a Flux Capacitor. It wasnÕt the first time that life imitates art. But the real deal was not going to look like an inverted ÔYÕ. He continued to tap in data until a space filled with energy data filled into the box he had created. He watched for a minute to make sure his digital box was able to maintain its structure. ÒSokath, his eyes opened,Ó he cried out. Teller looked up from his screen to see what Penn was excited about. Cocking his head to the side, he began to work through the equations and simulation. Smiling, he looked at Penn, ÒArchimedes in the tub.Ó ÒMike Rowe and the pledge,Ó he said as he pointed to the box. ÒHouston to Cape Canaveral.Ó Penn chuckled. The reference to hard work was not lost on him. However the idea of fabricating what they were going to need might be beyond their collective skills. They had fabricated items before but this required a skilled hand. ÒSydney Smith with a square peg,Ó he said jovially. Then a little more seriously, ÒKen Mattingly with Apollo 13.ÓÒSquare peg,Ó the Tamarian said thoughtfully. ÒThe Professor,Ó he said, ÒThe Professor and the Jet Pack.Ó Turning back to the data, he started typing in some commands, ÒThomas Edison and failure,Ó he said. The screens in the lab started running the simulation of the solution that Penn had proposed. The data from a thousand simulations started filling in a series of curves. This information would guide the tolerances necessary for the device to do what they needed it to do. As Teller watched the results unfold before him something unusual happened. He recognized some of the results to be similar to a very basic quantum mechanics experiment in the existence of alternate realities. She had readily accepted it wouldnÕt be an easy task to complete, but the complexity was pushing slightly on her calm nerves. What was it about this that was bothering her? She was returning to the question every twenty minutes wondering if there was something she was missing or was it something more? The captain opened a shipwide communication channel and she slid up to stand straight and listen. ÒThis is the Captain, all departments to yellow alert status. ETA to the Altair system is one hour, forty-five minutes. Evidence has pointed to this system as a target or base for Roanoke infiltrators in Starfleet and there is the possibility of meeting a high-ranking member of that organization en route, perhaps on the vessel, we are following. All senior officers and command crew prepare for a battle situation though we will avoid it if at all possible. The Illuminar will be penetrating the system under cloak and in the wake of the USS Valiant. This should confuse any attempts to sense the ship. Once we are positioned we will begin planning the next phase. A department head briefing will be held at 1600 hours if our insertion is successful. Keep in mind we are inserting ourselves into a friendly system without authorization, hostilities will be avoided at all costs. Our purpose is for further investigation of Roanoke activities and not to begin a battle with Starfleet elements. That is all.Ó T'shalaith raised an eyebrow in curiosity. They were heading into a possible battle situation. A yellow alert wasnÕt often called unless there was a significant concern of what awaited them at the destination. T'shalaith shook her head, ÒAside from the ongoing translation the sector around us reads as it should, Captain.Ó "Monitor the Valiant closely, passive scans only." The science officer nodded and retasked several passive sensor systems to the Valiant, splitting the console screen to retain the ongoing decryption efforts while allowing her to keep the starship under watch. She glanced at the passive scans and felt that concern rise to the front of her mind once again. A full furrowed brow broke across her face. It was an odd, as the humans would say, omen. Her usual logical mind wasnÕt able to quantify with the data why there was something unsettling her general calm. She looked over the results once more. Nothing of note. ÒWeÕll continue this tomorrow. Ms. Ywan, can you schedule some holodeck training time for each shift to run through the Alderaan, Hoth and Naboo scenarios. Tell them I want to see improvements and the best performances will have drinks on me. And McFry, please let Commander Verin know IÕll be a few minutes late to shift.ÓThe three people filed out of the office past the science officer. ÒCome in Jaton, itÕs good to see you are back on your feet. How was the first day back?Ó he asked as he motioned for the Trill to take a seat.Jaton took a seat. It was odd to be treated so professionally, especially now that they were alone, but then again he didnÕt know what had happened over the last three weeks.ÒIt felt good to be back. Still catching up with what happened and still not exactly feeling 100%, but IÕm better than I was to be sure.ÓGregory nodded, ÒI cannot imagine what you have been through. Those injuries, I was told, were life threatening. I am glad the doctor was able to heal you, though I heard it was touch and go for a while. IÕve only got a few minutes before I have to be on the bridge, but I am off after 2200.ÓJaton got up, and sat on the desk to be closer to Dieter. ÒI donÕt want to interrupt. I just wanted to be with you for a few minutes. I donÕt know what my injury put you through, but I want to know.Ó He placed his hand tenderly on his cheek.Gregory frowned as he removed JatonÕs hand. ÒThis is my office and the place I do business. Please leave displays like that to non-office spaces.Ó He paused. ÒIÕm not sure what you expect me to say? We lost a dozen crew in the attack that injured you, including several cadets. We lost our second officer. We lost another cadet in a training accident. The Captain was attacked and almost killed. Diane, it turned out, was involved in the plot and is dead now. IÕm working on developing training for the beta and gamma teams to get to the level of the alpha crew. The candle is burning at both ends.Ó He paused, ÒThat is why I need to keep the professional and personal separate. I canÕt focus on one if I am worrying about the other. And right now, the needs of the crew outweigh my needs, and I accept that. It's also why I try to keep things casual. Do you understand?ÓJaton hung his head. ÒI think I do. And I apologise.Ó He stood up, and took his place behind the chairs. ÒI just figured that youÕd been through a lot of anguish since the attack and I wanted to show you that IÕm here and I want to comfort you. To help you feel safe. Because I care about you, Dieter. And IÕm sorry that you decided itÕs easier to close your heart off to those that care about you.ÓJaton turned his back and made a move to leave the office. He looked back for a minute, a hurt look on his face. ÒHave you ever considered that doing so might mean that youÕll protect yourself from heartbreak, but will lead to a very lonely existence?ÓGregory looked at Jaton, ÒI appreciate your concern, but we all deal with things in our own way. Was there anguish? Loss of crew, your injury, the various battles. Not anguish. That is too strong a word. Virgil, a poet from my planet once said ÔVires acquirit eundoÕ, we gather strength as we go. Each experience we have, is an opportunity to gather strength or lay down and give up. I choose strength.ÓHe paused, ÒAs for my heart and my future existence, my choice. However, I am not shutting anyone out, IÕm just pointing out there is a time and a place for things, and in my office as I am about to go on shift is not the time or the place for those discussions or expressions.ÓJaton turned back to him. ÒWell, in that case, I apologise for the intrusion. Sir,Ó he said coldly. ÒIf there isnÕt anything else, IÕll take my leave.ÓÒDismissed Lieutenant,Ó Gregory said.(reply none)(posted by Spencer and Tim)-----------------------------------------------------END TRANSMISSION------------------------------------------------------
