Do what you think needs to be done, you have my permission, trust and gratitude.”, he said with a sincere nod of his head. With the only question being answered, Remae dismissed the officers and resumed his day. (Reply from Any) (Posted by Anthony Keen) (Mars Base – Officer's mess-- Science Officer – Ensign Jaton Alyl - 1126) Jaton was picking at a slightly grey piece of meat, trying to build up the will to eat it. This poor excuse for an Adana kebab was proof enough for him that the replicators were on the fritz as well. But seeing as this was the only meal he'd get till the evening in any case, he did his best to try and eat some. ~Maybe I'll have some better luck with the rice,~ he thought to himself as he picked up a forkful. "Mister Alyl may I join you?" Jaton looked up at the Vulcan standing over him and quickly swallowed the mouthful of rice, barely tasting the slightly off-balance blend of spices. "Not at all, Sekal. Please, sit." Sekal dipped his chin slightly in acknowledgement. "Thank you." He set his tray down across from the officer and arranged the plate, silverware and mug. "Has the work in the lab been going smoothly? I apologize for my absence but the Admiral called me away from my duties there for another task." "As smoothly as it can be. It's been a bit of a crash course for me on the last 25 years' of advances in warp theory and crystal design for the matter stream, but I think I'm up to speed at this point. I formulated a couple simulations before coming to lunch and I'm just waiting for them to run." (reply Sekal) "What did the admiral want you for?" (reply Sekal, any) (posted by Spencer) (Mars Base – Officer's mess-- Science Officer – Ensign Sekal - 1128) Sekal took a sip of his tea as Jaton began speaking, the other officer had indeed been busy. "As smoothly as it can be. It's been a bit of a crash course for me on the last 25 years' of advances in warp theory and crystal design for the matter stream, but I think I'm up to speed at this point. I formulated a couple simulations before coming to lunch and I'm just waiting for them to run." The Vulcan nodded. "Excellent. As you no doubt noted then because of the inherent inefficiencies in Dilithium crystals the advances have been primarily in adjusting crystal size and with minor variances in shape to minimize warp field angularity and expansion in the larger engines. The cost of more power needed for offensive and defensive systems has been the largest contributor to growth of engine and ship size on average of twenty eight to thirty two percent. Experimentation and application for Starfleet stagnated more than a decade ago due to an implosion of fleet size and composition and the latest breakthroughs been done in large part on outlying member worlds." Simulations were good tools for learning and the fact that the Trill was involved with them showed an eagerness to learn which matched his words. Sekal had no doubt that the science department was well represented with officers currently on Mars though two out of three, himself and Sienna Williams-Verin were relatively inexperienced not on the science but the officer side. He was unaware of how experienced an officer the Trill was him also being on Ensign currently but he certainly had prior experience. "What did the admiral want you for?" The Vulcan leaned back in his chair as he considered the most efficient manner of phrasing the answer.. "There is a ship docked at Utopia Planitia, an Akira class designated the Mystique which has melded with an entity calling itself Luma'Lenai. The entity and the ship are one in a manner of which I am not completely certain at this time. We discovered this yesterday shortly after we boarded her. The admiral wished to be introduced to the entity and since we had encountered her before myself and Ms Verin accompanied him to make the introduction." (Reply: Alyl) "The entity is... curious to me. She seems very childlike in manner and speech and is also very mercurial. When we first came aboard we were telepathically attacked but after being punished for an extended period the attack ceased and she became very solicitous, almost beatific. This complete reversal was unexpected and I cannot understand the duality of her nature." (Reply: Alyl) "The entity is ancient, eons old by her own admition and full of anger. She blames Starfleet intelligence for taking away her ability to leave the planet and return to the stars. The admiral promised to repair the ship and in return she has given her word to remain nearby in case needed and to convey us to necessary destinations." (Reply: Alyl) (Posted by Charles Gatling) (Mars Base – Officer's mess-- Science Officer – Ensign Jaton Alyl - 1130) "What did the admiral want you for?" The Vulcan leaned back in his chair as he considered the most efficient manner of phrasing the answer.. "There is a ship docked at Utopia Planitia, an Akira class designated the Mystique which has melded with an entity calling itself Luma'Lenai. The entity and the ship are one in a manner of which I am not completely certain at this time. We discovered this yesterday shortly after we boarded her. The admiral wished to be introduced to the entity and since we had encountered her before myself and Ms Verin accompanied him to make the introduction." Jaton looked back at Sekal at this revelation, surprised. He put his fork down and leaned forward, listening intently. "That's an interesting snag. What is it like?" "The entity is... curious to me. She seems very childlike in manner and speech and is also very mercurial. When we first came aboard we were telepathically attacked but after being punished for an extended period the attack ceased and she became very solicitous, almost beatific. This complete reversal was unexpected and I cannot understand the duality of her nature." "Strange. I wonder why. Did she offer any sort of explanation?" "The entity is ancient, eons old by her own admition and full of anger. She blames Starfleet intelligence for taking away her ability to leave the planet and return to the stars. The admiral promised to repair the ship and in return she has given her word to remain nearby in case needed and to convey us to necessary destinations." Jaton stroked the beginning of a beard that was just appearing on his chin, weighing the facts over in his mind. "I wonder how she became entangled in the Mystique's systems. Any theories on that front? And how might we separate them? That is, if she wants to be separated." (reply Sekal, any) (posted by Spencer) (Mars Base – Officer's mess-- Science Officer – Ensign Sekal - 1135) The Trill gave the indication of deep thought with the unconcious gesture with his fingers of stroking the short facial hair on his chin. "I wonder how she became entangled in the Mystique's systems. Any theories on that front? And how might we separate them? That is, if she wants to be separated." Sekal shook his head as he swallowed the forkful of Italian green beans he had been chewing. This conversation was reminiscent of the last time he had ordered this dish, much discussion with little actual time for eating. "Unknown at this time and I have not had opportunity to formulate a hypothesis. As for whether the entity might be amenable to moving from the Mystique I can make an informed extrapolation." (Reply: Alyl) Sekal took a sip without returning the mug to the table. "The entity from observation is extremely lonely, this brings up a number of possibilities for future discussions." He took another sip of the hot beverage. "One, she could be staffed with a permanent crew if a suitable mind bondmate could be found however this is unworkable in the long term due to the age of the vessel, its antiquated architecture and scarcity of available spare parts to keep it in optimal condition." (Reply: Alyl) "Two, as she obviously desires other beings to interact with and if a way might be found to move her we could offer to bring her to the surface and integrate her with the computer on the base." (Reply: Alyl) Sekal set the fork down for a moment and chewed the mouthful thoughtfully. "That would have its advantages for both parties. Luma would be surrounded by thousands of beings with whom she could interact and we would have access to the memories and experiences of a being that may perhaps have been born before our species came into existence." (Reply: Alyl) (Posted by Charles Gatling) (Starfleet Martian Ground Facilities – Officer Quarters/Deck– SO - Ensign Sienna Williams-Verin & MO Kasian Poldan –1730) Kasian rubbed his face he had no idea how he was going to pull this off. What was worse is that he was pretty sure his mother knew he was lying about the whole thing. Kasian looked in the mirror his hair still dripping wet from his shower. He had a little over an hour to find someone and talk them into behind his date and to uphold his lie. ~the station full of people there has to be someone.~ kasian thought while staring blankly at himself. Kasian walked over to his closet pulled out a pair of black slacks a dress shirt and a jacket. He was taking his time he had a lot of it still as Addison was still in the meeting. He dressed and left his quarters having no idea what to do he was wanted to just bump into anyone at this point. He knew his emotions where off the chart as Poldan was moving an extra amount feeling how stressed and anxious kasian was at that moment. Sienna Williams-Verin headed back towards her quarters from the science building, through the connected underground tunnels that were leftovers from when the base was originally constructed, the heavy duty airlocks in place in case the original dome was penetrated before the terraforming project was completed. Sy found it to be extremely fascinating, how the technology had evolved over the centuries as the base had grown. As she crossed through the main open airlock into the residential portion of the base she nearly slammed into the rather handsome Trill. Too sensitive by far now that the psi inhibitor had worn completely off and having been forced to reach out and actually touch the Trill, she blinked as she got a double dose of his emotions. Something was seriously wrong. Her Betazoid dark eyes met his and she kept her hold on his arm, "Whoa there Stallion. You are one of Linnie's fellow doctors, right?" She smiled. "You may not remember me from yesterday when I was brought into sickbay by the Vulcan, but I am Sienna Verin, Trip Williams in flight ops is my twin. I am life sciences and botany specialty. But ah, now that I have introduced myself, I ah, can't let you continue on like this. I do not know what is wrong, but something is and unless you want me to report you to Linnie as needing counseling, well, we should find a quiet place to chat." Sy smiled widely, not great like Trip was at introducing herself to new people. "In all fair disclosure, Linnie is like my unofficial sister, we grew up together on Earth. But I promise if it is a secret and you want it to be confidential I will not tell her." Sy held her hand up in the ancient earth ritual of scout's honour. Kaz smiled ~ three days and already being pushed under Bracken shadow~ he wasn’t really cross about it as much as he was still upset with her and the main reason he didn’t ask her to dinner. “It’s a bit of a long story honestly, but I’m happy to tell you as long as you don’t tell Linnie. The Ambassador from Trill that came in earlier today is my Mother. Now here the big kicker she has me set up in some crazy barbaric arranged marriage.” Kaz signed shaking his head he hated this part and the next part was probably going to make him sound really bad. "I solemnly swear NOT to tell Linnie. But seriously, tell me all of it. Wait, my quarters are not far, lets go there." She led him to the 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment the twins had been assigned . As usual, her brother's dirty laundry decorated the couch. "One min." She scooped it all up and left it before Trip's door. "Got any siblings? My brother is a slob." She then opened the opposite door, letting out a gorgeous white ragdoll siamese cat that more resembled a tribble than a cat. "Sorry, continue.." she gestured, plopping down on the couch next to him, the cat depositing her shedding self in Sy's lap. Kasian laughed “yeah I do two brothers a twin and a younger brother.” Kasian replied you her question. “So in an attempt to get out of it I joined starfleet to get away from trill hoped it would go away. Turns out that didn’t happened and my mother is now here and has already made it clear that I have an obligation to Trill.” Kasian paused again rubbing his temple this all was too much for him and was causing him a lot of emotional stress. "Why does your Mom think you have an obligation to Trill? I am a bit confused by that. Are you joined? Is that why?" Kasian looked at her for a second forgetting that not everyone knew he past like Ailynn did “I am, Poldan 5th host” kasian said lifting his shit for his new friend to see Poldan movement. “And between that and her political career the last 10 years or so have been a bit odd I guess. Kasian said before he continued his story. “So in order to get out of it I sort of lied and told my mother I had met someone and was in love with her. My mother being a lot smarter than I give her credit for because she knew I was lying and has invited me and this fake love of my life to dinner.” Kasian stopping noticing he had been rambling on about his personal problems and now he figured he was going to be sent to counseling for being crazy. “I’m Kasian by the way Kasian Poldan. Pediatric surgeon by trade. don’t guess you would like to go to dinner would you?” He added are the end because someone should know them name of the person who had just unloaded a super helping of family drama on them. "Where did we meet? In sickbay here? How long have we been in love? There are some things I really need to know. Have we been intimate yet? Have you heard me sing? Like what do I need to know and how formal is this dinner?" She grinned at him, "Do you have a nickname by chance? My friends call me Sy. Oh, this will not be the first time that I have been someone's cover story. Buddy growing up was super gay and needed a girlfriend for family functions. My Dad is an engineering Admiral, Mom is a Captain in strategic operations at SFQ where Dad teaches advanced stuff. I have an older half vulcan/betazoid Sister who is stationed on a Vulcan research vessel out near that planet." She was wondering what level of knowledge they needed. Kasian was taken back a bit he didn’t expect this he was only trying to make sure she didn’t ship him off to the crazy house. “I don’t think it is going to be super formal you know just a dinner with the Ambassador of Trill.” Kasian said in an attempt to be funny. “So Mom was a councilor served on the Hades and a few other ships. She returned to Trill before my brother and I were born and is now the Ambassador, as you know. My dad is Jaton Alyl that’s a longer story, but he or a clone of him is working in the science department.” Kasian hates trying to explain his family but he needed this to work. “Don’t worry about Arvos he will be at the dinner but just pretend I’ve never told you about him. As for a nickname, most of my friends call me Kaz.” He wasn’t sure how to answer some of her first questions he hadn’t given it much thought he didn’t really think he would find anyone to go along with it all. “I guess to answer all your first questions we met on the ride from earth to here love at first sight hopefully they will buy that. As for Intimate let say not yet if we are asked, but I don’t think we will be as intimacy isn’t really a big thing on Trill.” “So you sing?” Kaz asked making sure to note that he didn’t miss that. He would at least make sure to show her the amount of attention he would show someone he was actually dating it was the least he could do since she was helping him out. “I personally can’t sing at all, however, I'm very good dancer maybe I could take you out dancing sometime as a thank you for tonight.” Kaz caught the word coming out before he could stop them. He was never that bold he wasn’t even sure why he just said what he said. She smiled sweetly at him, “I do dance, but not as well as my twin does. Sing yes, and I sang last night in the new taven/bar area with Linnie and Trip. Linnie played her cello and sang, Trip played his guitar and sang back vocals, and I at times playing my flute and mostly sang. I did a set all me earlier in the night but we really rocked it. We haven’t played like that together in a while and it was super fun to do.” She looked over at the chrono, “So what time is your dinner supposed to happen and how formal is it, and do I have something here, my Aunt Kate sent a bunch of stuff from home but I’ve had literally no time to unpack and see what I have here. But if we’re going to pull this off, I need to dress the part.” She smiled at him. She was going to have fun tonight “Not sure not very formal you’re just meeting my mother who happens to be an Ambassador.” Kaz gave a shrug he really didn’t expect it to be a formal thing, but knowing his mother she would try to pull a fast one over on him. Sy gave Kaz a once over and nodded, hopping up as the cat deposited her beautiful, regal self in Kaz’s lap, purring, “Kenna likes you!” She popped into her room and opened a case, frowning at the interior, muttering ‘I really need to unpack’. She found her cosmetics in one container, her perfumes in a second carryon and her less formal dresses in a stand up wardrobe thing, along with several gorgeous couture gowns. If it was not obvious that Sy was basically fleet nobility before, here was the proof. “Did I ask you what your favorite color is by chance?” She called back out of the propped open door. “I have a really awesome crimson dress and a slightly more formal strapless jade one. Maybe come pick?” She quickly shed her uniform and was standing in her room in underwear and not much else as she ran a brush through her dark betazoid hair and began to pin it up with long hairpins that were topped with glass beads. Kaz was only about half paying attention as most of his attention was now on the creature in his lab. He couldn’t help put to pet the cats soft fur. Kaz always wanted a pet, but his luck anything he pick would end up with fleas or other biting bug that be the death of both of them. Kaz moved Kenna as he was summoned to come look at dresses he never would understand why women had such trouble picking clothes. He had only known Sy for a minute but he knew not matter what she would look beautiful in anything she picked. Walking to the room Kaz figured best to answer questions so she know he was there “um green I guess would be my favorite, however, that is nothing compared to the color of a sunset on Trill.” Kaz really missed home he missed his friends, he missed the tree in his grandparents' yard he always go to when he needed to think. Kaz stepped in the door his face got hot and he knew he had turned all shades of red. “I umm sorry..” he said not knowing what to say other then turned away looking at a wall. ~should of knocked you moron~ he thought to himself. Kaz wasn’t normal easily embarrassed, but for some reason he was at that moment. Sy turned, frowning. “I’m half betazoid. Betazoids have no nudity taboo, and I figured if I’m supposed to be your girlfriend, then you should know mostly what my body looks like. So uhmm, yeah. I need to wiggle into that dress. And I’m not exactly naked, I’m dressed in underwear and you are a doc, right?” She didn’t like those embarrassed emotions that came from him. She was worried about them. While Sy preferred plants to people, she was a gentle, caring soul and she was concerned. A few moments later, she was in the dress, turning towards Kaz, “Can you zip me up please?” She tried not to grin. “All right, we need some jewelry and make up. How much time is left?” “Yeah, Yes, I am a doctor you are right. It just you’re really beautiful and I don’t want you to think I'm some weirdo.” he said as he Zip up the dress Kaz was super grateful for her help, and just to have a friend around to talk to. Quickly she put in her earrings, having Kaz help her to put the beaded necklace that matched the dress on, then applied quick makeup. “What next, I don’t have a bag that matches..but I have shoes. Somewhere and..perfume. What kind of scent do you like best?” “I…. ummm I don’t have a favorite really I’ve never really had a chance to date anyone other then Prenea and she's awful.” Kaz said Sy nodded and selected it. “Stand behind me, please? So when I spray it, the scent will lightly transfer to you. That way it’ll be like we were snuggling before the dinner to explain if we are late and lend a little bit of credence.” She spritzed the perfume and stared at herself in the mirror for a long moment. “So, uhm. Who all is going to be there besides Mom? Any other family? Do you think the other woman will be there? If she is, how do you want me to act towards her?” “Prenea, yeah she will probably be around she is working as my mothers aid. Its a job that she deems under her. Her father is a Trill Noble and if it wasn’t for her having a younger brother she get that title and all the power that goes with it.” Kaz couldn’t stand Prenea she was just stuck up and acted better than anyone she met. “Oh and my Brother Arvos you can’t miss him he looks just like me, but tell him I’m a bit more handsome then he is please. ” Kaz said winking at Sy. he couldn’t wait to see his Brother and he enjoyed taking a jab at him every chance he got. They had a really good relationship when it mattered anyways. “So to keep his little girl happy she gets to marry up. Its stupid. To answer the other question I don’t care how you act, but he warned she will treat you as a lesser person.” Kaz felt a little bad now that he said all that to drag such a nice girl into his crazy life. Kaz looked at his hands for a second “Oh if you have not noticed by now Trill hands tend to run a bit colder than most races so sorry about that advance.” Kaz rubbed the back of his head and smiled a bit awkwardly. Sy smiled at Kaz, “I don’t mind that. I’m pretty curious about your symbiont and how it all works and what it feels like from your side. I think we can do this, and if it gets bad, well there is always alcohol, right? You need to know that due to my blood incompatibility disorder and the meds for it that I don’t react well to all terran based alcohols, including synthehol. About the only thing I’ve managed to drink that has not completely destroyed me are betazoid wines and this sweet vulcan liquor that is impossible to find. My Dad had some given to him by Ambassador K’tess of Vulcan. She said that some of the vulcans who don’t follow the path of logic make it but it’s really rare and isn’t exported. I guess that the vulcans really don’t like that sect and I think they are almost embarrassed? If Vulcans could be embarrassed that is. So yeah. Are you ready to do this?” She smiled again, having to look up into Kaz’s eyes. Kaz smiled “Well no I’m not ready, but its time so lets do it.” Kaz said reaching out his hand for Sy’s. He couldn’t wait to see the look on his mother's face. “I owe you one so after tonight feel free to make me the subject of any experiment you want.” Kaz was hoping that wouldn’t be taken wrong, but he felt super safe with Sy and most people scared Kaz at least at the start. The pair left the Williams-Verin Quarters and headed towards the Ambassadors accommodations. Kaz would never be able to express how grateful he was. (reply None) (posted By Mel and Richard) (Starbase - Conference Room - CO Admiral Remae Ktell/SPC Ambassador Addison MacCaulay - 1809) Addison listened to the Admiral as he spoke and asked what they wanted in return. Addison was pretty sure she knew what she wanted, but she also knew fully agreeing to any terms without the full council would be the end of her political career. The next words out of that Remae said hit home something that she didn't consider re-joining or even allying with the Federation again would but a major target back on the Trills backs. They would risk losing more of their people. It was a fair question that the Admiral asked. "It's true we did leave the federation, but at the time we lost hundreds of symbionts. To us we lost decades of life, loved ones, however, my opinion we acted a bit too hasty." "I am not so sure.", said the Admiral as he sat back in the chair, "You were far from the only ones and I can see why it would be in the political interest of Trill to depart. Your technology probably has advanced. plus.", he said pausing for a moment, "It's come to the attention of Starfleet Command that worlds that have departed are being courted by other worlds to form partnerships and other kinds of mutually agreeable pacts.", said the Admiral and it was of no surprise to anyone. Any world who was once a part of a large interstellar community would probably seek out another one and become a part of it. Remae wouldn't be surprised if Trill had been courted or contacted by such an entity but if something like that did exist, he didn't "On another note even with us gone you have a trill on your staff." Addison said looking at the Admiral she didn't want to say some of this was her being an overprotective mother for the child who ran into starfleet the second he was able to. "There have been special cases from officers whom have decided to stay, families who rejected their species intent on leaving, we have Andorians, Romulans, Klingons, Betazoids and yes, we have Trill with us as well.", he said before adding, "A brave decision to abandon what you know, your identify, your being." "Ensign Jaton Alyl certainly has endured more than most since we started restart Mars but I have high hopes for him. One of our Vulcan Science Officers has taken him under his wing, I think." Addison felt her heart rate increase at the name it wasn't even one that she could mistake. Had there been some sort of mix up in all this. She looked at Remae a bit confused. "You must be mistaken Kasian Poldan is the only Trill we know of that is currently serving in Starfleet. As for Jaton Alyl he was killed 25 years ago before my eyes. There is no way he could be here." Addison's Starfleet career ended shortly after that incident she knew that she couldn't raise her children in that environment. She had seen her loved one shot she had landed Hades in the middle of a firestorm been shot at by Cardassian. And all of this in her first trimester. "I have to admit, it's all a bit confusing for us too. All I know from the reports by our Doctor, Ensign Bracken is that he came out of a coma, of sorts, fists flying but that person has been positively identified. I've returned him to service, as an Ensign.", said the Admiral trying to be as sensitive as possible. "I understand." Addison said she really didn't know if this was all true then she needed to see it with her own eyes she needed to see him to explain to apologize for not being able to save him. She wanted to tell him about his two sons even if it wasn't her Jaton it was a part of him. "Admiral I think it would be appropriate for you to come to Trill we can talk about the plans for Trill and the Federation there. Do you have a ship? Let all these pups get a feeling for a real mission.", said the Ambassador. Remae thought about the request for a moment, it would mean leaving Mars for a while and taking a trip to Trill, not a short voyage by any means. However, for the chance to regain an important member of the Federation, it wasn't going to be a chance to pass up. Plus, the idea of a lot of Ensigns going on a real missions, well, she could well be right. They did have a ship to take, if she'd help and cooperate. "I think it's doable, Ambassador Addison but it's going to take us a bit of time to get ready, but I'd prefer it if you escorted us to Trill, it would seem a little odd us going alone. I'll inform Starfleet Command.", he said outstretching his hand, "It'll give me nothing but pleasure to welcome Trill back into the family." "Sounds perfect" Addison said as she stood up she felt like this was a good first step in fixing a relationship between the two groups. (Reply none) (Posted by Anthony and Richard) (Mars Base, Medical, Medical/Counselor, Ensign J.G. Quinna Solice 20:05) She then looked up from her spot, “Chief Miller, you are aware this is a sickbay and not a break room correct?” "Of course, it isn't a break room," said Kathy, "but we have only so many medical personnel, so you wait your turn." Before anything else could be said, Doctor Solice appeared. "Good evening. How can I be helpful?" Petrova told Solice why she was there, ending with a terribly rude comment. "Your aide at the station felt it was acceptable to pretend I was neyt here for a good half a minute. I assume she is just overworked and not an imbecile." “Bear in mind that the “Aide” you are describing is a highly educated yeoman that does not have to put up with a lippy ensign.” Quinna turned to look at Yeoman Miller and gave her a nod. “Luckily I am both a Doctor and a Counselor.” Quinna offered her credentials. She turned to Perova, “Why don’t you come with me and tell me what is going on.” Alexandra sat down and said, “My vessel was hit by a Breen raider, with some sort of energy weapon, every since then I have noticed a migraine, I assume its the after effect of the ion disruption messing with the neurological signals in my body?” Quinna pulled at a medical tricorder and started to scan she looked at the results confirming what was being said, “I take it that this has happened to you before.” (Petrova reply) “I can give you something for the symptoms and I can protect your systems, but it will be a few days before your neurological signals return to normal. I know that is something you do not want to hear.” “As for the other matter.” She cleared her throat and looked around, then leaned in and whispered, “I require a contraceptive shot.” Quinna shrugged her shoulders, this was simple to do, “Sure, no problem.” (Petrova Reply) Quinna gave Petrova the medicine that she prepared. “You should feel some relief soon.” After a moment, “You are welcome to stay here until the medicine takes effect, but it goes without saying that you should get some rest.” (Reply Miller, Petrova, Any) NPRG: Sorry for delay. Not feeling well. (Played by Kris) (Mars Facilities - Red Sands Tavern - Santiago Torres -20.52) "Those are some lofty goals," he replied softly, "But remember two very important things, the first is that we must learn to crawl before we can run, and the second is that the pen is mightier than the sword. Sometimes it is better to be a poet than a samurai." (Reply Trei) "You see, I was once a counselor on a Starship, and it is a good time, but it takes time to get there. It was late, so she needed to call it a night. Reaching out to turn off her computer, she noticed a small icon flashing in the lower right corner of the screen. Curious, she clicked on it. A file appeared, but the title was unintelligible. Clicking on it, large, red letters saying 'encrypted file' began to flash on and off. Now what was this? Taya tried again to open the file, but got the same results. Drumming her fingers on the desk, she was deep in thought about this. "Computer, scan the terminal on my desk. What can you tell me about the encrypted file on the screen?" [Encrypted file was placed by Ensign Sanok on stardate 2444.06.02.] "Can you open the file?" {Negative.] Taya sighed. Why would her predecessor leave an encrypted file? Was it something he saved, but neglected when he was recalled? She thought it was unlikely a Vulcan would do that. She was beginning to feel Sanok wanted it to be found. If that's the case, how would she find the password? Was it as simple as it being hidden somewhere in this office? Nothing to lose by searching. Taya picked up her computer and looked at the bottom. Nothing there. She got up and studied every part of her desk, peaking under it. Nothing there. She checked her chair, followed by the two extra chairs along the right wall. Nothing. She moved to the replicator on the left wall. "Computer, were there any programming changes to this replicator?" [Negative.] Taya moved to the door, running her fingers around the side posts and lintel. Nothing. She was getting annoyed. Her antennae were moving in slow circles. Where was that password? Slowly turning in place, Taya looked at anything and everything, when the scorch mark in the corner above the replicator caught her eye. She went to it and scanned it with her tricorder. There was a little bit of dust, a few strands of spider web, and residue of phaser fire. Going to the other side of the office, she grabbed one of the extra chairs and placed it on the floor below the scorch. Standing on it, she studied it closely. Finally, a thought came to her. Why did Sanok fire his weapon at a spider in a web in the corner of his office? Was he afraid of spiders? She chuckled. Hopping off the chair, Taya sat at her desk. She typed spider into the password bar. [Access denied.] She typed spider web. [Access denied.] Arachnid. [Access denied.] "Come on! I hate this." Taya was irritated. Wait. That was it. She smiled, speaking aloud as she typed. "I hate spiders." [Access granted.] She was in! Taya smiled, pleased with herself. The tips of her antenna were bobbing. So, what was it that Sanok had hidden? (reply none) (posted by Rob B.)
