Balder was a reluctant participant in a minor civil war with secessionist forces on the Federation colony of Oskoala VII, some 10 years ago. Previously head of a rare ore mining operation, he was drafted into the colony's planetary defence force after the escalation of hostilities left the volunteer corps severely undermanned. He is known to have participated in several critical operations that resulted in the Federation retaining control of the colony.

Little is known about Balder's family. He is himself intractable on the matter. Records indicate that he was married, with two young children, before the skirmish. They are listed among the occupants of an evacuation vessel that fled the colony, the USS Sigourney. Their whereabouts are currently unknown.

Balder is relatively uneducated by current Federation standards, at least in formal terms. On standardised tests, however, he performs admirably, considering his circumstances. He is knowledgeable and well-versed on all forms of mineral extraction and refinement, and since the Oskoala civil war, combat tactics, demolitions and energy/beam weapons maintenance/operation. Some piloting experience. He is possessed of a rare cunning.

Received numerous reprimands for insubordination, violent conduct and one count of mascot vandalism during his basic training; came close to expulsion, but his otherwise extremetly high competence saved him. Superiors are advised to be aware of this recruit's spotty record.

Smokes cigars almost constantly. Once threatened to extinguish same in superior officer's eye when informed that smoking is frowned upon.
