With a small present under one arm he walked in as the doors opened revealing a large gathering centered around the Birthday Girl. He moved his way inwards and presented his gift. “Happy Birthday.”, he said and handed over the girls. It was open with a ribbon across the front, showing off the Bajoran lilac that he had gathered up the last time he was on Bajor. She hadn't been at the initial briefing, she hadn't been included as part of the away team, but on a starship it was very difficult to keep something like this hidden as people were being altered to appear Cardassian. As she stood there, dressed today in the maroon jumpsuit that was suitable attire for the counsellors, she shifted from foot to foot, running the arguments over in her head. So when the Captain allowed her to enter, she took three steps forward so that the door would whoosh closed behind her and... everything that she had been prepared to argue disappeared out of her head for several very long moments. Her heart began to beat faster and a faint flush touched the Betazoid's cheeks. "Captain, might I have a few moments of your time? And a seat?" Not quite entirely within her shields, the thought leaked, :: Before I fall down... :: (reply Captain) (posted by Mel :-) (USS Spectre - Captain's Ready Room - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 14:02) Three days out of spacedock and the thoughts of Sulia Madon were weighing heavily on the Captain's mind once again. Not something that normally happened to one of Vulcan heritage of course, but then T'Vhor was not entirely Vulcan. The passionate, feeling, illogical and consuming side of his character occasionally took precedence to the cold, calculating logic of his other, more controlled half, and now was one such time. Madon's involvement, if indeed the intelligence had been reliable, would spell nothing but trouble. The Obsidian Order operative had rarely surfaced or even been heard of for many years now, but whenever it had done, it was always in a sombre note. Indeed, not since the Geneva incident just prior to the 52nd fleets headlong entry into the thick of the civil war, had her name dripped from anyones lips in passing conversation. Oh, it was probably true of course that the name 'Madon' may have been uttered amongst SFI ranks, but elsewhere? Probably not... The Captain closed the terminal down, the recent conversation with Admiral Alexanders aide still resonating in his mind as the familiar Starfleet logo dimmed upon the screen. Then breaking his thoughts, the chime of his door sounded and he duly bade the person enter. The Counsellor looked somewhat 'ill at ease' as she marched in, it was as though a part of her was not entirely there and as she opened her mouth to speak, the words fell out of it rather than issued forth in a timely fashion "Captain, might I have a few moments of your time? And a seat?", she said, apparently catching her breath as she telepathically transmitted the sentence 'Before I fall down'... Whether that had been intentional or not the Captain was unsure, but his own Betazoid senses had picked it up and he raised an eyebrow in a quizzically Vulcan manner. Then he settled back into his seat and extended a hand towards the seat opposite him. "Please do Counsellor", he said, and the Counsellor approached. "What can I do for you?" Kurt Palmer - 07:30) After a rough start to the day Kurt finally found himself on the bridge. Commander Tsukawa was seated at the center seat, he greeted her before taking his seat to review recent activity. There was something from Ensign Grey about a cardassian device found onboard, he skimmed through the unfinished report. He would be looking into this later on. He continued to review sensor readings from the previous night... Nothing out of the ordinary. Class 1 comet, and a momentary spike in the EM band... Nothing to write home about. --- When he saw everything was running smoothly he rose from his seat to head down to the science department. He entered the turbo lift "Deck 4" The computer chimed in acknowledgement and the lift descended. (Reply Any, None) (Posted by Cody) (USS Spectre - Deck 4- science lab 1- CSO Lt. Jg. Kurt Palmer - 08:44) The doors hissed open to reveal an containment field and a few frazzled officers. Among them was a very exhausted Ensign Grey. "Report." He said as a couple real-shirts stiffened at the sight of Kurt. This was a behavior he had not yet grown accustomed to as a brand new senior officer. (Reply, Gray, any present?) Kurt moved behind the ensign to look at the terminal. ~what a predicament~ "And what progress have you made this far?" (Reply, Grey, any present?) Kurt nodded. "Keep up the good work...." He was interrupted by the comm overhead... =/\=Peake to Palmer=/\= He tapped his commbadge "go ahead" The crewman on the other end proceed to explain that a lieutenant Riya had failed to report in on time this morning. Kurt glanced at the chrono on a nearby terminal. 09:01. He furrowed his brow. This was not the first time this name had been reported to him. ~ one more freakin thing to do~ "Have her report to my office. Palmer out." He clicked the call off and turned to Ms. Grey. "I'll have you meet me down the hall in an hour.... I have a few things to tend to." He moved to the doors and turned as they parted to address the room. "Keep up the good work people." He made his way out of the room and down to his office. (Reply, Grey, Riya, any present) ((Post by Cody)) (USS Spectre - Deck 4 - science lab 1 - ACSO, Ensign Jg. Ilana Grey - 08:45) "Report." Snapped a Lt. behind Ilana she almost jumped, her head hurt she had been going over this device for almost two hours now. “Well, the device had a trap built into it where an acid began to dissolve the device as soon as we began to scan it, we are now trying to reconstruct the device but we are hitting a lot of snags.” Ilana said turning and remembering to stand to attention half way through her explanation. Kurt moved behind her to look at the consol, Turning Ilana brought up the device as it looked compared to how it now looked. “As you can see it’s a bit of a mess in there.” "And what progress have you made this far?" “Well, I’ve managed to reconstruct part of the wiring currently it’s looking like a pre-2200’s Vulcan or Romulan device or a Cardassian device, or possibly Yridian.” Ilana sighed, “To be honest those are all Hypothosies, it could be Delvian for all I can tell, the wiring reconstruction will take hours, the computer simulation has started to show some improvement though.” The Lt. Nodded "Keep up the good work...." The comn interrupted him =/\=Peake to Palmer=/\= He tapped his commbadge "go ahead" The Lieutenant began to walk away as he began to talk to the person on the other end of the comn, Ilana bent over the console again her brow furrowed, these cardassian ridges were really starting to get on her nerves a headache was building behind her eyes. Kurt turned to Ilana "I'll have you meet me down the hall in an hour.... I have a few things to tend to. Keep up the good work people." He made his way out of the room and down to his office. Ilana let out a sign of relief, having the boss looking over your shoulder was always tense. She wondered if she would have time to pop to sickbay to get something for this head ache. In the end she decided to push on she would like something more promising to show the HOD in an hour. NRPG: I’m doing the meeting with Palmer so I can link it to Ilana’s appearance on the way to sickbay. (Reply Palmer, Any) (Posted by Jo) (USS Spectre – Quarters – Science Officer- Lt Amari Riya - 09:04) Amari was late. Again. She had meant to awaken at 0800 and had overslept. She wasn't entirely sure what was going on with her fatigue, but she just hadn't been able to get out of bed this morning. It was only the incessant beeping of the computer chime at her door that dragged her out of bed and over to the door to blearily answer it. Amari was unsurprised to see her friend Kate from Engineering glaring at her. Kate pushed into Amari's quarters and began to throw things onto the bed. "I swear Ami, how can you sleep through that beeping? I was out there maybe 5 minutes literally banging on the door." Kate stopped and put a hand on Ami's forehead then pushed the half betazoid to the bathroom door and into the shower. An answering curse from Ami was heard as the shower was set to cold. Kate ordered coffee and some fruit from the replicator. "If you don't get it together Ami, you are going to get reprimanded and you won't get that promotion you are looking for. There is only so much that your coworkers can cover you for, Ami." Amari ducked out of the restroom, in her uniform, pulling her wiry, long spiral curls back and away from her face, securing them with a gold clasp from Betazed. Both women froze when the computer contacted Amari with the request to report to the CSO. Kate silently hugged her friend. "It'll be ok. He's not that scary." Then Kate was out the door, leaving Amari to report to her supervisor and explain why she was so late for so many days running. With a heavy heart, Amari found herself standing outside Palmer's Office, shifting from foot to foot nervously. (Reply Palmer, any) (posted by Mel :-) (USS Spectre - Deck 4, CSO's Office - CSO Lt. Jg. Kurt Palmer - 09:30) Kurt sat back in his chair holding his chin, he was diligently studying the current intruder situation. He looked up at the time on his wall terminal. ~What is Ms. Riya doing?~ He Thought realizing how much time had gone by. He tapped his desk terminal, and brought up Lieutenant Riya's officer record. The LCARs display collapsed into itself and seconds later a list began to pour down the screen. She had quite the record, she had accomplished quite a lot in her 10+ years in Starfleet. Suddenly Kurt was a little intimidated; He knew he would have to be a strong senior officer in this situation, but this was difficult in a department of amazingly qualified people. He always was able to maintain a collected facade, but he was waiting for the moment that it-- The door chime sounded. He clicked off his terminal, straightened his tunic, and sat up in his chair "Come." The doors parted, and there stood a slightly disheveled woman. "You must be Lieutenant Riya." He said maintaining a stern expression. "Take a seat." He paused for a moment and shifted a couple PADDS on his desk to stall while he collected his thoughts. He looked up at the woman as she took a seat. "Are you aware what time your shift starts?" (reply, Riya) "And are you aware what time it was when I requested you come down here?" (reply, Riya) "Correct." Kurt said, and folded his hands on his desk. "Where were you for the last hour?" (reply, Riya) "Heres the deal. You have an outstanding service record, and have done some amazing work. I understand an extreme workload and I understand an occasional bad morning. I had one of those myslef today. However, I cannot tolerate this behavior for this extended duration. Your untimeliness effects the entire department." He paused looking her directly in the eye. "One more slip-up like this, and I will have no choice but to send a report to T'Vhor. Understood?" (reply, Riya) "Dismissed." The Lieutenant exited and as the doors closed he let out a deep sigh. ~I don't want to do that again.~ He swiveled his chair around to order a coffee from the replicator before tending to a few PADDS. He would have to be focused for Ensign Grey's report on the saboteur situation. (reply, Riya) ((Post by Cody)) (USS Spectre - Deck 4, CSO's Office - Science Officer Lt. Amari Riya - 09:32) While it was true that Amari had taken her time to reach Palmer's office, it wasn't as if she had dawdled. She'd stopped by the Research Bay to look at her plants and reassure herself that they were in fine condition. She was working on adapting a strain of Klingon 'wheat' for a terraforming project on a moon in that system. Well it looked and acted like wheat and the Betazoid woman was hard pressed to be able to say the actual name of it. She had a somewhat heavy heart as she hit the chime on his office door and waited to be admitted. She didn't think that this meeting was going to go very well. Not at all... When admitted Amari presented as a mix of the classic Betazoid facial features with the cocoa colored skin of her Earth based African parent. Her brown hair was wiry and hard to tame and she often wore it pulled back. Her uniform was slightly rumpled and her eyes were an odd mix of green and blue. Never the perfect officer she was an extremely excellent researcher and technician. She knew enough however to wait for permission to speak before launching into any sort of an explanation of her recent behavior. Not that there was a great reason for her to have been so late as often as she had been in the past few weeks. (reply Palmer, any) (posted by Mel :-) (USS Spectre - Deck 4, CSO's Office - Lt. He had that look to him that said he wasn't going to accept any excuses, and that he wouldn't care what the reason was so long as she fixed it and brought everything logically back in order. The science types didn't like chaos she had learned. "Are you aware what time your shift starts?" She looked down at her hands and considered her answers. She could give an explanation or she could just give him the minimal answer he wanted. "Yes, 0900." She spoke in a low, calm voice. "And are you aware what time it was when I requested you come down here?" He continued relentlessly. She shifted in her seat a little, not quite squirming but certainly quite uncomfortable. "Yes Sir, it was close to 0915." "Correct. Where were you for the last hour?" She frowned slightly. This she could answer. "I went by the hydroponics research lab to check the strain of Q'Vi'Tlth'vrgh I've been working on." The poor Betazoid woman did her best to pronounce that unpronounceable Klingon word. She really had no idea how Betazoids and Klingons could stand each other, let alone long enough to mate and produce offspring. "It needed to be monitored as close to 0900 as possible or I could have lost the last month's worth of research." "Heres the deal. You have an outstanding service record, and have done some amazing work. I understand an extreme workload and I understand an occasional bad morning. I had one of those myself today. However, I cannot tolerate this behavior for this extended duration. Your untimeliness effects the entire department. One more slip-up like this, and I will have no choice but to send a report to T'Vhor. Understood?" She sighed again, "Something has been going on, and I'm not sure what. I've been exhausted all the time, I've slept through alarms, I can't keep down breakfast. My back aches horribly. I was going to go by sickbay for a check-up today before my shift, but I slept in, again." She visibly winced. "I'll go after my shift, unless you think that I should go now, Sir." She tried to keep her mouth shut, but the traitorous thing opened and said the one thing she shouldn't say, "If you feel the need to report me, chain of command goes through the First Officer for personnel disputes. They should never reach the Captain." She cringed a little bit as she expected to be reprimanded for correcting her 'superior' officer. ~Dammit Ami now you've done it and he's going to be pissed...~ ((reply Palmer)) (posted by Mel :-) (USS Spectre - Deck 4, CSO's Office - CSO Lt. Kurt continued, all the while feeling silly that he was reprimanding an officer the same rank and with considerably more experience than he. She explained she had stopped by hydroponics to tend to an experiment. "It needed to be monitored as close to 0900 as possible or I could have lost the last month's worth of research." "Heres the deal. You have an outstanding service record, and have done some amazing work. I understand an extreme workload and I understand an occasional bad morning. I had one of those myself today. Then what was supposed to come out as shall I make you an appointment with the counsellor came out as... "One more slip-up like this, and I will have no choice but to send a report to T'Vhor. Understood?" ~Well that was a little harsh Kurt.~ The curly haired woman let out a sigh before unloading an explanation of sorts "Something has been going on, and I'm not sure what. I was going to go by sickbay for a check-up today before my shift, but I slept in, again. I'll go after my shift, unless you think that I should go now, Sir." Kurt felt sympathy for her at this point, and unfortunately he missed 'Part Betazoid' under race description in her file. Perhaps she sensed out from observation or empathic abilities that he wasn't enjoying this conversation, but what came out of the woman's mouth next was completely out of left field. "If you feel the need to report me, chain of command goes through the First Officer for personnel disputes. They should never reach the Captain." Kurt pursed his lips, and the room fell silent as he carefully calculated his next words. "You should also be aware there is a court martial in order for your repeated tardiness. However, I will both ignore your last remark and the court martial." The glanced at the chrono. "I have a meeting with ensign Grey shortly, so you will return to your duties and I will contact you shortly about seeing one of the ships counsellors." (reply, Riya) "Dismissed." The prospects were now worrying, she, and the rest of the away team were going on a covert mission down to a Cardy planet when they or at least one of them already knew they were coming. (Reply Kurt) Ilana entered the office and handed across the pad to her CO, “Sir it would appear that the device is of Cardassian origin, we can’t be a hundred percent sure that a Cardassian saboteur placed it there as all DNA on the device has been destroyed beyond recognition,” She added quietly in her mind that also the fact that she had touched it before scanning it had contaminated the results as had the Klingon “This is a booster device, not the core device, there are probably more devices like this placed throughout the ship.” (Reply Kurt) “Detecting them will be difficult, if we do any active scans the field inside the device will collapse releasing the acid, while this would remove all the devices it would also cause problems throughout the ship, possibly burning or damaging vital conduits. This could de-cloak us it could stop us dead it’s unsure what else it could do. As far as we can tell the device emits a low subspace frequency you would be able to detect it approximately one kilometer away, so no good for being picked up by other ships even a cloaked ship that close would be detected however as I said there could be a parent device with a better range as to what the devices are recording that I wouldn’t be able to guess at unless we discover more of them.” (Reply Kurt) “I will instruct the science team to continue working on the device to see if we can get more information however at the moment I’m not holding out much hope without finding another device, I have forwarded my findings to Lieutenant Kerge as he was wanting to track and destroy the rest of them.” She said, “If you’ll excuse me sir, I’m going to go to Sickbay briefly then I’ll need to get ready for the Away mission.” She said standing to attention. (Reply Kurt) Leaving the office Ilana rubbed her temples they were now pounding like hell. She really needed some rack time but the mission was just starting. Ensign grey exited. ~Geeze, she seems terrified of me….~ Kurt made a note on a miscelaneous PADD to make a counseling appointment when they returned from this mission. He needed to speak to someone about this position of his. He tossed the PADD into a pile, and picked up the one he had just received from Ensign Grey. For a long while she'd been having these headaches that just sprung out of nowhere. It caused her to lose control of her telepathic abilities for brief periods of time. First the cacophony of the ship would intrude then there would be blankness. Loud then isolated. It was exhausting. She was a doctor, she should be able to figure out why this was bothering her. With a quiet sigh she hit the button to darken her screen. She'd made a promise that with each episode she'd go to sickbay and see if they could figure out what was wrong this time. And so she took the moment of isolated quiet to head down to the sickbay. On the correct deck the loudness hit her again, and she couldn't tell up from down. She sank to her knees against a wall, clinging to it, surely such a sight to behold. She saw people pass her by and look but obviously they didn't see anything unusual to this. She hit her comm badge and croaked out a command that sounded to her like medical emergency but was really some garbled mess between the betazoid and common tongues. Finally she hid her head, closing her eyes and ineffectively covered her ears waiting for the chaos to subside. While most doctors claimed to have solved the issues of common things like headache's, the common cold, and even the more fatal disease of the 21st century, she knew that she wasn't the first person to get a headache. The sound of people around her was only exacerbating the thumping in her head. She rounded a corner to see a woman in a blue uniform slumped onto the ground, She rushed forward quickly, her medical training was barely past basic, however she could tell from the black on black eyes that this woman was betazoid, probably a telepath or at minimum and empathy. "Computer Activate the EMH." She called tapping her comnbadge. She Knelt by the woman as the EMH appeared and went through its usual greeting routine, which Ilana had always felt was a good waste of time in a medical emergency. She pulled her tricorder out of her belt, true it was currently calibrated to scan bits of scrap metal for recognizable circuitry but up until last week she had been working on methods to block telepathic and even telekinetic abilities. She quickly reset the scanner and ran it over the young woman's head. "Hi, I'm Ilana," She said, "Can you speak?" (Reply DR. Kirien) "I'm just doing a scan of your head it seems to be causing significant amount of pain, your neuron-receptors are firing like crazy," She looked at the EMH, "Don't stand there get me a cortical stimulator, and ten milligrams of cotrozine." She snapped at the photonic doctor. She mumbled to herself "God knows why they decided to make those things standard issue." She mumbled She soothed the Betazoids head wondering if she could hear her voice, or her thoughts. Ilana looked briefly at her own hands, "Oh god!" She thought when she saw the greenish grey skin, "I'm not a Cardassian," She said to the Betazoid, "I'm actually a Starfleet science officer, just well..." She paused "It's a long story." She snatched the devices off the EMH when he returned. "Ok, I'm going to apply the Cotrozine to neutralize your telepathy you will feel an uncomfortable quietness." She touched the hypo to the womans' neck and discharged the dosage. Before applying the stimulators to her forehead. "EMH are you equipped to monitor her Neuro-functions from here?" "I am fully equipped to..." He started "Great then grab her other arm and help me get her into the medbay." Ilana snapped again she thought how f'ing pedantic these medical programs were, she hadn't liked the previous generation much either they had been so smarmy, and apparently the first generation holograms were known to have a terrible bedside manner. She had learned a long time ago that every success or failure taught her something valuable that would eventually lead to success. She was extremely good at her job. She drifted out of her 'office' and into the Bay itself, kneeling down next to an earth orchid that she had been genetically changing to be able to survive on Vulcan. When she was in the Academy, she had met a vulcan who took great pleasures in gardening, at least as great as any Vulcan would ever show. This was her pet project, adapting the beautiful flowers of various cultures to be able to survive the harsh conditions. This wasn't just for Vulcan, there were any number of planets where the atmosphere wasn't quite correct for these sort of delicate flowers to survive. Those sort of discoveries often had other uses as well, more practical uses. She crawled along the grass to another of her plants and caressed the leaves of it lovingly. She had an intuition about plants that she had learned to listen to. Amari frowned at it then pulled out her tricorder and pointed it at the plant. Kenny stood up and took a step back before realising that one member of the team was Vren Keswick. She spoke to him. "Very well done Sir." Said Keswick, smiling "You've done an excellent job. One of my people will take over now and you can relax. Just wait until she tells you to move and then do so as quickly as you can." Kenny nodded his response, still slightly shaken by the whole event. "No, I'm fine, it's... not my blood." he said, glancing back at the man. (Reply Marilyn.) Suddenly the computer sounded an alert. [Decompression warning, loss of atmosphere on deck 9, evacuate the deck. Decompression warning, loss of atmosphere on deck 9, evacuate the deck.] Keswick spoke to him. "Sir, I suggest you evacuate this deck now. Don't worry about us, we will follow you as soon as we can but you need to go now Sir so that I don't have to worry about other casualties." "Understood. I'll head up a deck." Kenny said. Decompression warning, loss of atmosphere on deck 9, evacuate the deck] Remae had arrived on the deck with crew running back the way he had come; some others were running the other way but he was focused on reading the environmental control conduit, where the damage was centered. Comm chatter was all around him, reports of a stabbing and the computer now bleating warnings more often and what sounded like a more shrill voice. He wasn’t the only one looking at the destroyed conduit, the controls were just gone. There was no repairing them. He yanked off the lower panel; his target was the atmospheric feed that came from the lower deck, branched off and then headed up to the next deck. It was quickly clear that there was no time to fashion a new conduit, repair it and even get close to it. The Bajoran looked around... and then said, “Computer, time to environmental failure on Deck 9?” [Five Minutes, Five Seconds] He rolled out of the conduit, pushing anyone around him towards the door before pressing the comm-panel. “Anyone left on Deck 9? You’ve got 5 minutes to get out!”, he said before opening a small room near the turbolift, inside, an environmental suit was hanging up... he hoped it was his size. Since coming onboard, they had been sent on some sort of secret mission that had necessitated an amazing amount of security and double shifts which he didn’t mind really because it kept his mind active and gave him a good chance to learn more about his new crewmates and the ship layout, where the weaknesses lay and how the Security Chief operated. So far, Harrison had nothing bad to say about any of the crew or the ship. It seemed like a place he could grow and learn and that was what he had wanted. His thoughts turned to his father and how proud he would have been of his son with such a prestigious appointment as this. As his thoughts turned to his old man, he felt the familiar fingers of regret and depression begin to creep into his mind. ~Not now.~ he thought to himself. Truth be told, he still was dealing with the death of his parents, even after all this time. It never really left him, no matter how many counsellors he spoke to. He threw himself into his work as a way of coping and this was how he had ended up on the Spectre, just before they had left Spacedock on this, their current mission. Thankfully, even though he hadn’t been chosen to take part in the undercover mission on the surface, being on board the ship had proven to be just as interesting and dangerous. Something strange had been going on and it had begun to irk him. There seemed to be something strange going on the ship. As his thoughts turned to the recent turn of events, a noise entered his ears. Sitting straight up, he cocked his head and listened carefully. Tapping his combadge, he said, "Computer, locate source of that noise." [[Please specify.]] Came the reply. Groaning, Harrison continued, "That recent sound that came from above me. What was it and where exactly was it located?" Could it possibly get any worse than this? The ship was cloaked and beyond Cardassian lines, a running countdown to a deck decompression, and they were effectivelty rigged for silent running and the alarms were now sounding! "Cancel that alarm!", exclaimed the CO insistently, his fingers running deftly across his armrest console in order to pinpoint the reasons for the sudden alarm as he spoke. Then, with his brow furrowing, he addressed his bridge officers once again. "I want to know who is firing weapons on this ship", he said, the tactical officer beyond him following that up with a report that the weapons fire had occured on deck nine, but that strangely the decompression warning had now ceased. T'Vhor turned around, his hand gripping the armrest as he did so. "Does anyone have ANY idea what is going on around here?", he asked, knowing that the events transpiring all around them were anything but identifiable right now. The truth of the matter was that the saboteur, whoever that might be, had pretty much tied them all up in knots. And the Captain was not a happy bunny! Indeed, this was far worse than anything that the persistently problematical lagomorph might have created during his oftimes meanderings into the bowels of the ships ODN conduits, the thoughts of Mark's previous troublesome antics popping up in the Captain's head as he pondered it. "I want a report from all decks, all departments", said the Captain. "And I want that saboteur found. Now! Or at the very least the means to find out where he is operating from", he added. Not that Cardassian's were inherantly ugly to him, or repellant in the way that they looked, it just seemed odd that the reflection looking back at him from the mirror was not that of the young resistance fighter that had spent so long fighting them on Bajor! ~A necessary evil~, he had thought in the quiet of his quarters, his mind drifting then to the earlier incident regarding the attack upon the Marine. Clearly, their saboteur had stepped matters up a notch, and now more than ever they needed to find that person before they caused any more damage to this mission. Walking through the ship, he had certainly drawn a few odd stairs from the crew, some of whom weren't quite sure whether to come to attention, or completely ignore him. Either way he was now in somewhat familiar company, his associates on the assembled away team looking equally uncomfortable at their own appearances. It was T'Vhor's job though to instil confidence and to not appear out of place, a paradigm perhaps but nonetheless, it went without saying that a certain degree of comfort in their new appearances was necessary now in order for their ruse to work. Each member had been dressed in the garb of traditional Cardassian villagers rather than the accepted image of their military. It was considered the easier of the two options and one that, statistically anyway, would be the most likely to prevent antagonism amongst the decidedly peaceful natives of Corvus. There was a military presense there of course, but it had been considered better to blend in than it was to appear threatening! Stepping onto the transport pad, the Captain acknowledged each member of his away team in turn, then he looked to the transporter chief who had already input the required coordinates that would put them down in a position just outside the target village of Corvus, one of the outer districts of the main city, Amparus on the first moon of Amleth. Lau was reported to be at this location somewhere and the Captain could only hope that the intelligence was correct on that. Otherwise, what was all this for? With his team assembled around him, T'Vhor drew his brown cloak about himself. He took a deep breath in and then centred his thoughts. Then he gave the order. “Energize please Mr Cambell. Be sure to maintain a lock on our signals at all times”, said the Captain. The chief gave a cursory nod, and then followed with a reassuring, “don't worry sir, if I lose just one of your signals, you can space me yourself” The Captain raised an eyebrow at the remark. Why would he even think of ejecting a crewmember from an airlock at the loss of a comms signal? He knew that the comment had merely been an attempt at humour of course, perhaps given to reinforce confidence amongst the away team members that 'the chief' had their backs. The Captain nodded accordingly, and then followed with - “Whenever you're ready Mr Cambell” Cambell nodded, and then looked down at his console. Activating the targetting scanners and beginning the sequence of beamdown, he then returned his gaze to the assembled crewmembers. Then he bade them good luck and a safe return. The transport sequence then began, each away team member being scanned, disassembled, shunted to the pattern buffer, targetted, and then beamed through the void to re-materialise in a partially derelict alley just inside the north entrance of the village. Indeed, there was nobody around at all, which was probably for the best right now. Grey had already scanned the immediate area with a preliminary passive scan so as not to transmit their location to any that might be listening in, and had duly reported favourably. After all, one could not be too careful on ANY Cardassian outpost, and a moon was no different. Grey's report though had concluded that they were, for the moment anyway, apparently safe, albeit breathing a slightly thinner air than what they may have been used to. It was also reassuring that they were not receiving anything from the Spectre right now, regardless of the fact that some might perhaps have considered that to be un-reassuring. The Captain nodded accordingly as CSO Palmer then reported the presense of nearby lifesigns. "Lifesigns... 1.8 Kilometres ahead...", he said, his expression betraying a certain uncertainty just for a moment or two. The Captain turned to face the CSO and queried that apparent uncertainty. "Lieutenant?", he asked, "is there a problem? (Reply Palmer) The Captain looked up to the somewhat curiously coloured sky, and then turned in the direction of the reported lifesigns. "Whatever the case, our most pressing questions and answers lay in the direction of those lifesigns. I suggest we proceed", he began, moving off as he spoke whilst the others followed suit. (Reply Palmer, Any) (Posted by Alan) (Amleth - Amparus, Corvus District - Cardassian Compound - ACouns Lt.Dr.Riven Mias - 13:42) Riven was sitting at the foot of a bed deeply meditating. The bed chamber was relatively utilitarian as one would expect in a Cardassian controlled zone save for a few unconventional pieces of equipment that had been added for medical reasons. These appeared as out of place as the Betazoid who now occupied it along with the patient he was tending. What a Betazed mind healer would be doing in such a place would be a long story were it not shortened to this one overriding fact, a troubled parent with very potent connection within the Cardassian hierarchy. This parent’s name was unknown to Riven who had been recruited by Star Fleet’s Intelligence division. Even within the most tightly fisted governments there were those who could when push came to shove step outside the boundaries for the love of a child. If you were to search galaxy wide you would no doubt find exceptions such as the Waagoshin and others but the Cardassians were not such an exception. How this parent had been able to contact a Star Fleet representative or have this place set aside for such a purpose did not concern the mind-healer in the least, nothing concerned him except the young girl who lay comatose before him. The machines kept her body’s systems moving, the heart beating, supplying nutrients and oxygen and whatever else a being required, the only thing lacking was the spark. Not the firing of neurons within the brain but the spark of intelligence, life … consciousness. According to the dossier he had been given she had undergone a traumatic brain injury as the brightly colored scar on the left side of her temple attested which physicians had mended after a lengthy surgery. But still the spark refused to be fanned into a flame, the spark was there, in there somewhere and he had been searching for it for two nearly sleepless days now. He was as weary as he had ever been in his life but he refused to quit until that spark flamed and her eyes opened. He closed his eyes again and reached out with his mind once more, every sense on high alert. Peripherally he was aware of other minds close by, the agent who had brought him to this place whose mind was virtually aflame with worry, ~we’ve had been here too long already~ he was thinking. Riven shut him out, negativity at this stage could not be tolerated. The Cardassian who had furtively escorted them here was in a similar tither, Riven had shut her off not long after they had arrived, she appeared to be a perpetual pessimist. ~Where are you my pretty?~ He sent into the child. He had gone as deep as could be expected safely and yet again there was no answer. ~Very well~ He thought to her. ~If you will not come to me then I must come to you.~ His teachers of long ago would have cut him off immediately, to dive even deeper into the recesses of her brain meant his own possible extinction but he had not come here to fail, he was a healer and sometimes healers must consider their own lives of secondary importance. The very floor seemed to be pulling him toward it, were he standing he would have fallen, even sitting he slumped forward until his upper body came to rest against the bed. He didn’t hear the growled comment from the SFI agent at the door. “What the hell! He keeled over.” Similarly he didn’t hear the Cardassian woman’s keening wail. He was falling deeper, still searching for that spark. And he found it, finally thank the goddess he found it! ::Who are you?:: The tiny voice asked. ::I’ve come to help you.:: ::Help me why? What have I done?:: ::Nothing child.:: ::Have you come to punish me?:: The mental voice carried a tenor of fear. ::No child, I’ve come to bring you back.:: He sent soothingly. She calmed only a little. ::Father will be mad.:: ::No, your parents love you, they’ve sent me to fetch you. They worry for you.:: ::Love?:: The thought came across as breathlessly hoping. ::Yes, they love you and want you back.:: ::But I…:: ::I would love to discuss this with you and I will but right now we need to go back. I’m weakening. If I stay too long we will both not survive.:: ::But how?:: He sent out a tendril of his own consciousness to her which weakened him further but it was a gamble to had to take if he were to save her. ::Hold onto me and I will take you back.:: Her presence seemed warm in his mind as they made contact, with it her fear began to quickly subside. ::Now hold to me tightly.:: And then he began the long arduous climb back to consciousness, feeling with every passing moment his own strength failing. He was so weakened he almost lost his grip on her. ~Mother strengthen me. It began as an almost infinitesimal whisper which slowly rose and seemed to carry him with it as it crested, the same power he had tasted once before when he had had to kill, an act which had haunted him since, this time though it was giving him the strength to save a life. An act of redemption, a catharsis he had begged for time and again. Light grew in his mind until it was nearly blinding and he could almost see the form within it. ~Your actions do not make you who you are, your heart does.~ And then it was gone and he was sitting in the chair gasping for breath. In that unshielded moment of sheer joy he sensed something else, minds he had not sensed before as they seemingly popped into existence which startled him so much he almost didn’t hear the little girl’s own intake of breath. He jerked up and looked toward her and saw green eyes looking back into his own. “Who are you?” “I’m Riven.” He reached out and took one of her little hands and smiled down at her. The woman pushed him aside as she reached out and folded the girl in her arms. “Mommy!” Well that took care of the question of who their contact was. The hands that grabbed him by the shoulders were accompanied by an exclamation of relief. “Come on Doc, we’re done here. We need to leave if we want to get off this rock.” Riven groaned as he rose to his feet, at first he wasn’t sure he could walk but gained strength with every step. The officer took out a scrambled com unit and keyed it, he dared only use it for a few seconds this deep in occupied territory. “Falkreath to Jarmouth, water is deep, repeat water is deep.” He then shut down the transmitter and waited for the reply. There was no reply. “Damn and triple damn!” The officer muttered. “Either they’ve had to go deep or they’re a hunk of twisted metal.” He glanced at Riven who was looking at him questioningly. “The last check in was this morning, they reported increased Cardassian activity. And I don’t dare send again for at least another six hours. Either we stay put and hope they get back in contact or…” Riven slowly smiled, the officer began looking at him as though he’d lost his mind. “Or we find another way off.” “What the? What do you mean?” “I mean we aren’t the only people here who shouldn’t be here.” “How do you know that?” Riven’s smile grew as he remembered that unshielded moment when he had touched other minds. “I mean there are other Star Fleet personnel on this planet.” His voice was barely a whisper as he leaned close to the other man, the woman in the other room would have had the ears of a remote listening device to hear him above her daughters excited ramblings anyway. The officer shook his head. “Doc you’ve just been through a lot, are you sure…” Riven’s laughter echoed through the room then he lowered his voice again. “How about I see for sure?” “Well all right, if you think so…” Riven had already shut him out as he reached out to one of the unshielded minds he had touched. ::This is Dr. Riven Mias of Betazed, Lieutenant Riven Mias to be precise of StarFleet to unidentified StarFleet personnel:: (reply: Palmer) He could have been more specific any other time on who it was but right now he was too exhausted to go any deeper. ::I’m not alone, there’s someone else with me, we need a rendezvous.:: (Reply: Palmer) (Posted by Charles Gatling) (Amleth - Amparus, Corvus District - CSO Lt. Jg. Kurt Palmer - 13:48) "Lieutenant" Came T'Vhor's voice, "is there a problem? "None, sir." He responded closing the Tricorder and concealing it in his Cardassian costume. Kurt looked back towards the captain and after a pause their orders were given. "Whatever the case, our most pressing questions and answers lay in the direction of those lifesigns. I suggest we proceed" (Reply None, Any) (Posted by Cody) (Amleth, Amparus, Corvus District - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 14:01) Proceeding through the village, the team seemed to go pretty much unnoticed, their garb seemingly illiciting little more than cursory glances as the throng of people meandered around them. They appeared now to be in some sort of a market place with traders selling their goods to eager citizens looking for a bargain. T'Vhor glanced around, it was unusual not to see a Ferengi in such a place as this, but then, perhaps the goods on display were not of high enough value for such large lobes. How though would they find the mysterious Targin Lau in this place? It went without saying of course that under the circumstances, the man himself was hardly going to just come up and tap the Captain on the shoulder with a cursory 'Hi there, I'm Lau'. No, the man was running scared, he would not risk approaching unless he was absolutely sure that it was safe to do so. He would make contact in a safer place. "A bar", said the Captain, turning to his team. "Or some other place out of the way of the public eye", he added. (Reply Any) "Lau will not risk showing himself at such short notice", he continued, "we will no doubt be being observed. Perhaps by the Cardassian military, but also by someone allied to Lau. He will need to know that we have arrived", said the Captain. (Reply Any) "I suggest we mingle, but remain close", said the Captain as he glanced the market place, immediately noting two Cardassian military standing ever present, near to a door set into a whitewashed wall. It was not wise though to look for too long, Cardassians were not known for their tolerance to scrutiny at the best of times, so the Captain averted his gaze. The team then moved off once again, trying their best to appear intertested in the many wears on offer so as not to raise suspicion... (Reply Palmer, Any) (Posted by Alan) (Amleth - Amparus, Corvus District - ACSciO, Ensign(jg) Grey - 14:03) Ilana walked through the village doing her upmost to keep her face deadpan, not that a frown with the prosthetics on her face would be noticed she mused. "A bar", said the Captain, turning to his team causing Ilana to almost stumble over herself "Or some other place out of the way of the public eye", he added. Ilana thought about it for a moment, “Since this is not an exclusively military outpost often the smartest place to hide is a crowd, or one of the lesser visited establishments,” She ventured looking around the whole village it looked like a lesser visited establishment. "Lau will not risk showing himself at such short notice", he continued, "we will no doubt be being observed. Perhaps by the Cardassian military, but also by someone allied to Lau. He will need to know that we have arrived", said the Captain. “We should split up cap… er sir.” Unsure as to whether to address the captain formally if they might be being observed. “In a large group we are conspicuous in one’s or two’s we will be less noticeable, I’m given to understand in Cardassian culture it’s not right for women to appear in bars unescorted by a older family member, but I could always check out part of the market.” She suggested. (Reply, Any) "I suggest we mingle, but remain close", said the Captain he seemed to glance around nervously Ilana looked towards one of the stalls and broke away from the group, ever a scientist she wondered what fresh food stuffs would be available on such a plant, thinner O2 and a warmer climate would provide, Cardassian’s loved the heat, however Ilana having grown up most of her life in England on earth was unused to the hot climbs and found the heat almost intolerable. She glanced over the stall arrangement. There were a few tubes and a lot of narrow pined plants of some sort, they looked like a cactus but she would have had trouble to be sure without her tricorder. She picked one up and inspected it looking across at the vendor. “Five Lek” The vendor muttered. Ilana pinched the bridge of her nose replying “Maybe later.” She moved on, One of the things she had forgotten to bring with her was any form of currency, living in the federation on a Starfleet vessel you rarely thought about money, her food and drink and clothes mostly came from her energy credits, on the rare instance she had needed to purchase something else she had managed to find a way to either trade or scrape together a few slips of latinum. She wondered if the trader would even accept latinum however she wouldn’t want to draw attention to the fact that she was from off world. (Reply, Any) (Posted by Jo) (Amleth - Amparus, Corvus District - CSO lt. jg. Kurt Palmer - 14:05) The group entered the village and after a moment T'Vhor spoke. "A bar, or some other place out of the way of the public eye" There was a short discussion amongst the group before they all moved off and split up. Kurt started down a narrow road, breaking off from the rest of his team. He walked down a ways before coming across a quiet looking establishment. He pushed open the door and entered the dimly lit structure. Kurt crossed what looked like a well worn bar and found a seat in a quiet corner of the room. As he was sitting, however, a voice suddenly echoed through his skull. His hand was instantly drawn to his forehead in an attempt to level himself. ::This is Dr. Riven Mias of Betazed, Lieutenant Riven Mias to be precise of StarFleet to unidentified StarFleet personnel:: Kurt immediately withdrew his hand as to not stick out in the small crowd. He swallowed. "Hello?" He simultaneously thought and whispered, completely confused by the event. The voice started again ~I’m not alone, there’s someone else with me, we need a rendezvous.~ ::where are you?:: Kurt 'responded' in his mind. (Reply, Mias) Kurt was beside himself, he had no response. He had been around many telepaths but never had an 'encounter' quite like this. (Reply, Mias, any) ((Post by Cody)) (Amleth - Amparus, Corvus District – Cardassian Compound - A Couns Dr Riven Mias - 14:06) Riven could read the confusion in the mind he had contacted like a burst of static which indicated he must have been speaking his thought. The Betazoid sat down with a sigh, partly in satisfaction and partly in weariness. ::Hello?:;. Contact with unshielded minds was normally childishly easy and would have been if he had been anywhere near normal strength. As it was though he was going to have to be limited to brief exchanges ::I’m not alone, there’s someone else with me, we need a rendezvous.:: ::where are you?:: Was the response ::That one is a bit of a pickle I’m afraid.:: Riven’s mind was clear and the contact was strengthening. ::We are in the Cardassian compound. I will explain more fully when we meet. It would be dangerous for you to come here so we will have to arrange a meeting place for later.:: (Reply: Palmer) If he were stronger he could have used the other man’s eyes to garner clues as to his current location, since he wasn’t he was blinded in a way to that information. ::I will endeavor to find a way to slip out of the compound and will contact you again when I do. At that point I should be able to follow the thread of your thought to you. Who is your commanding officer and what is your ship?:: (Reply: Palmer) ::Please relay my communication to him, we have no communication devices with us that can be safely used here. I will also explain my reason for being here at that time. It’s a convoluted story and I’m weary so we can’t maintain this for long.:: (reply: Palmer) Satisfied Riven broke contact and leaned back in the chair with another sigh, he was going to have to find something to eat, even if it were a scrap of bread to rebuild his strength before they hatched a plan to get out of this place. He needed a plausible reason for being here and a personal ID chit no doubt which had not been added to their gear. The plan had been for a quick beam out rather than mingling with the populace, any escape plan had been maddeningly overlooked. “I thought Star Fleet Intelligence was a bit more considerate with the lives of its operatives.” Riven looked accusingly at Lt. Gerald. The man shrugged stoically. “This operation was a last minute cobble and some of the normal fail safes were overlooked, it happens sometimes. By the way did you have any luck?” That brought back a tired smile. “The Spectre is in orbit and her commanding officer is on the planet, I just spoke with one of his officers. We need to get out of here so we can link up.” Gerald’s eyes furrowed for an instant. “Our best bet would be to slip out after dark and work our way into the city.” Riven used his right hand to absentmindedly stroke one of the charms woven into his hair which was hidden by the hood. It was a good thing the atmosphere here wasn’t very hot, he would have been sweltering in this suffocating getup otherwise. “Something anyone would be looking out for, good plan!” His sarcasm wasn’t lost on the operative. “Since I don’t have a better idea though I suppose I’ll have to go along with it.” The woman swept back into the room and began making something soft and bland for her daughter. “Just a little for her right now, her stomach won’t be able to tolerate much.” Riven commented absently. She nodded in irritation. “And would you happen to have a morsel I could chew on?” She threw him a smiling glance. “Anything I have is yours, what would you like?” Since he wasn’t sure what he might find edible he went for what usually stayed true from race to race. “Some break and cheese would be nice.” As his stomach rumbled at the thought. “Bread I have but the cheese I will have to go into town for.” “Then just bread please.” He waved at her having to leave the house, her daughter needed her here. The bread had the taste of some kind of fibrous root in it, like potato bread but not as palatable. He ate it with relish anyway, hunger is always the best spice. Little did any of them know that their plans would soon take a very different turn. (Reply: Palmer, none) (Posted by Charles) (Amleth - Amparus, Corvus District, Ktrall’s Hold (Bar) - Civilian, Lotheran Pessoj - 14:07) “I tell you, your wrong!” Lotheran Snapped at the Cardassian sitting opposite him. “A legal system that prejudges and indeed pre-sentences the defendants is not the most stable, it eventually erodes support from the average population.” The grey skinned Cardassian looked at the old human with a bemused look. Around the thick smokey bar in Amparus Loth’s and K’Trall’s arguments were well known. The human had moved on to the planet shortly after the end of the Dominion war. Why, was always a bit of a mystery to his Cardassian hosts, however his work at counseling war victims had been well received. Initially people had suspected him of being a federation spy, but most had assumed that a human in his late seventies wasn’t much of a threat and now he was well liked and received, even his outspoken debating methods were appreciated since Amleth wasn’t a major system often they were neglected when it came to forms of entertainment. “It worked for thousands of years.” K’trall argued back “Then what happened? You had a Obsidian order Coup followed by a Civilian Coup, followed by a Military Coup, followed by a Dominion Invasion.” Loth stated simply, “It clearly fell apart, when I was serving the courts on Cardassia Prime, it was already fraying, a Federation officer’s case was repealed, Even I managed to change two pre-determined sentences, it was not working as well as it could have. Up to twenty percent of those convicted were shown quite obviously to be innocent.” Loth reached to the table and pick up his small glass of Kannar he hated the stuff but it was the closet to whisky he could find. “You impossible old man.” The Cardassian bar tender snapped. “No wonder you managed to get cases repealed you probably managed to get the Judge frustrated enough to give up!” Loth sucked the reminisce of the Kannar off his mustache and grinned “This stuff is a bad as usual any chance you’ve managed to get any whisky?” The Cardassian shook his head. “Want me to play this evening?” Loth asked The Cardassian gave the old man a sly grin. “Yea go ahead there’s not many people in tonight you’ll not scare too many away.” Loth reached down beside his chair and pulled out his flute and moved it to his lips to begin warming up the instrument. K’trall slide another glass of Kannar across the table to the Human. Receiving a nod of gratitude. Once his instrument was warmed up Loth walked over to the small stand, it was uncommon to get live performances anywhere on the planet so Loth’s almost nightly playing was often well received although most of the audience didn’t, or couldn’t appreciate Jazz flute and his Saxaphone playing was a complete mystery. Loth began to let out the erratic dulcet tones and he warmed up the crowed. As he was playing he let his mind wander, ‘One of these days I’ll have to head back to the federation.’ His wife, who had died during the Dominion war, was gone, he had no children, nothing really waiting for him back ‘home’. He almost felt that Amleth could be his home, he wouldn’t mind remaining here, although the Cardassian’s often tried his patience with their arrogance and often blind aggressive nature when arguing. A couple of members of the audience seemed to be listening tonight he made a note to go have a chat with them later, perhaps they had learned to appreciate Jazz. What he wouldn’t mind though was to get some decent treatment, his Illness was getting worse he could feel it every day it just got that little bit harder to do anything. His counseling hours were now down to less that twelve a week, not due to lack of demand but mainly due to his inability to keep up. He finished his first song and took a bow. (Reply any, none needed) (Posted By Jo) (Amleth - Amparus, Corvus District – CMO Noah - 14:10) Noah watched as most of the away team headed for the bar. He decided to stay outside and have a look around. He had not had much experience with Cardassians before and wanted to see what they were like. He spotted Grey head off towards the market and though that it might be good to see what they had there so he followed after her. He at a discreet distance from her as he wandered through the various stalls that formed the market. “Hay you.” ~Oh ow~ Noah paused beside a stall selling an assortment of fruit and vegetables and turned to see a middle aged cardassian staggering towards him. “Hay you.” ~Who are you~ Noah paused as the cardassian wobbled over to him. The cardassian grabbed him by the shoulder and yanked him towards him until they were inches apart. “Hay you.” He slurred. Noah could see the blood shot eyes which were trying to focus on him. He also tried not to inhale as the cardassian’s Kannar breath that could melt trilithum at fifty passes. Noah had years of practice of switching his brain off to what he could smell but being in that close proximity it was hard for him to control his gag reflex. “Hallo too you too.” The Cardassian gave him a lop sided grin as Noah took a quick breath and began to breath thought his nose. “Why don’t you come with me and we can have a drink.” Noah gave him a pleasant smile. “I am sorry friend but I think that you have had enough drink for the both of us.” The cardassian swayed as he nearly lost his balance and Noah steadied him. He suddenly felt some thing in the small of his back and a hard spoken female voice murmured in his ear. “I think you should come with me friend.” ~Ow you have got to be kidding me. Just what I need. On the away mission for less then a hour and I get mugged that’s just wonderful ~ Noah paused took a slight breath as he turned his head to see who was behind him but was rewarded with a sharp jab into his back. “Ow no you don’t, now help your friend here over to the alley where we can have a proper chat.” ~Ow I bet that would be good. ~ He steadied the drunken cardassian with one arm as he quickly glanced around the market for Grey. ~Better not make a show or it will blow our cover. Lets just see what happens~ “Okay, Okay don’t hurt him he is just drunk. I’ll give you what ever you want just let him go.” He was jabbed again “Shut up, you are both going. Now move.” ~Just wait until we get somewhere quiet and I get my hands on you. Then you will get a shock, literally~ As he steered the swaying drunk towards the alleyway. He felt the tingle sensation of a static charge running across the palms of his hands as the electrical current slowly built inside of him. (Reply any) (Posted by Robbie) (Amleth - Amparus, Corvus District - Civilian, Lotheran Pessoj and ACouns Dr Riven Mias - 16:00) Lotheran Left the bar, a little peeved that no one had really taken an interest in the music he had been playing but then it was often the case. He walked down the street observed by the Cardassian soldiers, they rarely bothered him these days, and mostly they just observed him. He knew he was almost always being watched however since he had been on the planet over a year they took little more than a passing interest these days. Carrying his flute case he was walking down the street humming a tune to himself. He finally started making his way to the outskirts of the village; his house was a little way out of the village mostly separate from the other buildings. He stroked his beard as he walked. As he was walking along lost in his world Loth looked across at one of his neighbor’s houses. One of his patients lived there, not that he had been able to do much for the poor girl, she was brain dead as far as he knew, the mother had pleaded with him if there was anything he could do, he had been forced to acquiesce that this was beyond his skills. Finally after she had begged him for almost a fortnight he had send a sub-space message to a colleague of his who lived in Federation space asking if anything could be done. He noticed that the young girl’s light was on. He paused wondering if he should stop by. If she was awake he could begin counseling therapy, although after four glasses of Kanar he doubted he would be able to do much. Pausing as he pondered what to do he finally convinced himself that he would just 'check in'. He walked up to the door and chimed the bell waiting for the girl’s mother to arrive. Riven had been slowly regaining his strength while the SFI agent paced the floor, Not a surprising trait since he had only Riven's word that he had made contact. The drink the grateful woman had given him had helped more than a little, what he needed more than anything else was food, along with little sleep he had barely eaten as well since they had come to this place. The mother had been busy though tending to the child and he was loath to just help himself to whatever victuals she had in the house. And who knew, it might be considered an improper violation here. So he contented to helping himself to more of the tea "he thought that was what it was anyway and it wasn't half bad". He also kept his mind open for surprises, like the one he sensed approaching the door in curiosity. "Are you expecting visitors?" "No" the woman said and rushed back into the front room, He got up quickly and grabbed the agent by the arm and pulled him back into the little girl's room and shut the door as she prepared for whoever might be busting in on her little girl's welcome home. The Cardassian woman opened the door. Loth smiled "Good evening Nadian," Loth said with a smile "Any improvement with Adrella?" Loth asked noticing the woman’s face was slightly concerned. He paused wondering what the problem could be. Loth pushed past the woman towards Adrella's room, he stopped in his tracks when he saw two men standing in the room, in the darkness they looked human. Loth knew for a fact that there was no other humans planet side. "Who are you?" He demanded Riven looked from the belligerent visitor, human and not Cardassian to the woman he had called Nadian and from her back to the surprised, shocked and angry visitor. It didn't seem prudent to just announce who he was and why he was here. Loth re-iterated the question "Who are you? And what are you doing to Adrella" He asked casting an angry look at both figures. "Doing to her?" Riven's face cracked and he began to laugh. He stepped away from the bed and swept his arm toward the child who was blinking sleepily at the scene. "See for yourself my dear fellow". Loth rushed to the young child’s bedside, kneeling down so his head was level with the child, he could see her eyes fluttering. He looked over at the two "Impossible, she was in a deep coma," He said look up at the two figures, "What..." He paused regaining his composure, "You’re a telepath." He said with a suspicious look in his eye, "You know that's cheating." He joked "Riven's smile was beaming and seemed to draw warmth into the room (NRPG: Part of his empathic abilities which he manipulates cunningly, everything about the guy has been crafted over the years of his trade and helps to calm those under stress). "A telepath? Now how did you jump to that conclusion so quickly?" The twinkle in his eye spoke volumes of his mischievous nature "And furthermore I'm curious as to why you'd consider telepathy cheating were I to be using it... hmmm? Isn't the end result?" and he pointed then at the child. "What is most important, not how it was achieved?" "The end result is important I agree, but with Telepaths around what hope is there for us average humans?" Loth countered standing up although his 5'0 frame didn't quite match the Betazoid, "Also now i get a good look at you your eyes are a tad dark, and I can feel something buzzing around here." He tapped the side of his head, "Although must admit I’m very glad you managed to help her." Loth looked at the girl, "I'm Loth, and to be honest I had almost given up hope for Adrella" He said "What are you doing here? I find it a strange co-incidence that it would just so happen a healer would decide to pop by a sick girl’s house." Riven glanced at Lt. Gerald who shook his head slightly then back at Loth. "I'm afraid that I can't really delve very deeply into that subject except to say I'm a specialist called upon to help a little girl in need." He then gave him a beaming smile. "It's a calling of mine and I wouldn't have missed it for all the gold pressed latinum on Ferenginar." Loth nodded, "That’s a lot of gelt" He said slipping into Yiddish for a moment, "So what's your plan to get off this rock?" Loth asked, suspiciously, "I doubt you'll be strolling up to the starport and saying 'two tickets to Betazed please'. Loth scratched his beard, "And who is this stiff?" He said nodding towards Lt. Gerald, "Your body guard?" Riven chuckled at that one., "Actually my answer depends on how much I can trust you." He waved away the agent's attempt to interrupt. "And yes you're right. We're improvising a way to get off this rock at this very moment." His eyes twinkled again. "Yes I'm a telepath and yes I'm a Betazoid so I have a question for you, would you be willing for me to look into your mind? I promise I won't peek at things I have no business looking into." Loth thought about it for a moment "Oy, ok you can look but no placing things in there, I don't want to be found at the bar in a pink tutu doing the ramba with a Cardassian, can't be having that sort of thing at my age." Loth eyed him a little suspiciously, "To be honest you might get a headache from my brain." He grinned as he tried to relax his mind; oddly enough all he could think about was mound and mounds of counseling papers and the 'ethical' issues normally involved with telepathy and counseling. With permission given Riven opened his mind to Loth and didn't have to look long to find the answers he sought, this man's secret wasn't well hidden but his surface thoughts nearly sent him into a paroxysm of laughter. "He's all right." he spoke to Lt. Gerald. "He's the reason we're here it seems." He then turned back to Loth, "My name is Dr Riven Mias, the foremost mind healer on Betazed and this is the agent who got me here." When I found out there was a little girl I could help it didn't take much talking for them to convince me to come." “And don't worry, the symptoms will only manifest at the dark of the moon." He then smiled to show he was joking. "Now as for these ethical questions you seem to cling to I will have you know I never delve into a patient's mind without their permission or the consent of their guardian in a case like this. The codes I operate under are quite as strict as those under which you yourself operate. Though our methods differ our aims and boundaries are quite similar.' "You’re going where we weren't meant to go, and to be honest we only have your word that you don't nip in and steal ideas or plant suggestions, and it's just like the Federation to use those sort of tactics, have you ever noticed how many telepathic races have joined the Feds? No wonder every other empire in the Galaxy is after the federation." Riven shook his head sadly and the tinkling of chimes about his person took on a somber note. "I can understand your distrust, what you are speaking of is mind rape. While the Federation is not perfect there are strictures that prohibit such and as for me." His smile began to return and the chimes took on a merry note. "My oaths and tenants go far beyond mere Federation laws, as the preeminent mind healer of my kind I would be violating everything I believed and stood for to even consider such a thing. Your Hippocratic oath is a mirror of that. Do all your doctors abide by it strictly? Are there never violations of its tenants? We both know the answer to that. It is the moral fiber of the individual who operates under those laws that give it its strength and the violators are in the minority.” "My dear Mr Riven, I'm not a doctor, i'm a counselor, we have no Hippocratic oath, while I will admit there are a fair number of charlatans out there, most of us only work to the best, however we cannot forcibly change someone’s mind, we have to bring people to a better way of understanding or coping, it would take a fraud several sessions even with the most vulnerable to irreparably damage someone you could do it in seconds, but I digress, what's your other way of getting off this rock I wouldn't mind a lift." He added “Ah! So you’re a counselor as well, it is a pleasure to meet a colleague. As you can see I kept my part of the bargain and didn’t pry where I wasn’t wanted. ” "The good news is we do have an alternate way off planet in case our primary exit is now closed, the downside is we are going to have to stay out of sight until we can make the rendezvous." "Hah, well if you can pull the stick out of your arses and look a bit more relaxed we could probably go down to the bar, you could be my friends from out of town, it depends of course on how long we have, could probably get away with a couple of hours but longer than that.... well someone may decide to check our story out, the guards here aren't the sharpest tools but they aren't dullards either." Riven turned to the agent with a devilish grin. "I think he was talking about you." To Loth he said. "I for one have no objections; would they perhaps have something to eat there?" Loth thought about it, "They have food, the bar owner, he's been helpful in getting Terran food, can never be sure what Betazoids eat to be honest, but you'll probably be able to stomach it better than the Cardassian roots." Loth grinned he looked at the agent, "Hey stickman, relax." He turned to Riven, "Federation so serious all the time." He sighed, "Right let me look at you see if you could pass as poor councilors." He said inspecting the both of them. Looking both of them up and down he rubbed his beard again then thought about it, "I've got an idea," He paused "Can either of you play a wind instrument?" Since they had taken the precaution of wearing nondescript clothing for the occasion Riven was certain they'd pass. The point that grated on his nerves was he'd had to hide his long silver hair beneath a hood and his normally bright and eye-catching robes had had to be left behind, no matter though, he would replicate more when he got to a decent ship. The charms in his hair and upon the sandals though he had refused to part with. "Hmm. I have more than a passing acquaintance with such instruments," Riven spoke up. "I sometimes play one in the temple to relax after a difficult day." "Well at home I’ve got an Oboe, and a couple of Saxophones'. I play flute at the bar." He raised his flute case, "The barman likes it i think, and I think we could bend the Telepathic rules a little so you could jam with me would you be able to read my mind as we played? They would think you were my friends and we had played together for a long time, The eL Tee here could just be your accompanying friend." "An Oboe" The Betazoid nodded his head. That's close enough to what I play that I can fake it, especially if I'm accompanying you telepathically. Speaking of telepathy I'm just as accomplished an empath. We could have the patrons either cheering or weeping depending on the mood of the piece." "Would rather not have you poking around their heads, you never know when a old obsidian order guy is around, he could be trained to detect it." Loth shrugged, "I'll be back with the instrument give me twenty minutes " "A noteworthy warning." The mind healer agreed. "We'll be here, after all we've no other place to go." He grinned as Loth left. (Reply: Any if desired) (Posted by Jo and Charles) (Amleth - Amparus, Corvus District - Civilian, Lotheran Pessoj and ACouns Dr Riven Mias - 16:20) Loth arrived back at the house carrying four cases, one small luggage hold all, a Obo Case and a Saxophone Case, he knocked at the door and then barged in. He nodded at the Lieutenant. Loth straightened his suede jacket. "Right lets knock um dead." He said with a grin. Riven set aside the bread he had been munching and took the oboe case and took out the instrument and began experimenting as the human continued his rounds Loth moved into Adrella's room and looked at the sleeping child, "You know..." He said to no one in particular, "It's a pity I won't be here to help her." He said he sat down next to her bed and pulled out his Flute. He began to play softly, not the Jazz he usually played but a soft lullaby. He finished the song and sighed. Finally he folded away the flute and made his way back out into the main hall. He passed the Obo case to Riven and then handed the heavier Saxophone case to the LT. Riven took the offered case and grinned as the SFI officer took his case gently as though he were about to break it. While Riven was experimenting with the Oboe Loth continued to Gerald. "You carry this, if anyone asks you for a tune, you just tell them you’re not good enough at the moment," Loth grinned "Not that anyone would ask you for a tune, Cardassian's don't really like Jazz" Loth's grin was almost impish as he pulled his Hold all onto his shoulder. "Hey your not bad." Loth commented to Riven as he listened to the Betazoids tune Having tested the notes on the instrument and being satisfied Riven placed it back into the case and nodded at Loth. "I'm ready. Let's get out of here, I don't want to impose upon this poor woman's hospitality any longer." he stopped to place his hand upon the sleepy girl's head before they left. She had been fighting to stay awake since he had brought her back and while Loth had been gone he had talked with her at length and used his abilities to comfort her. "Sleep little one, the world will be here when you wake tomorrow I promise. You have a bright future ahead of you." She closed her eyes finally and drifted off, soon the machines would disappear from this house and she would run and play again. ~Better late than never~ He thought as he turned to follow the energetic old human to the bar. he relished the coming encounter, he had been cooped up in this house for too long already. Loth walked down the street head held high, he knew that he was getting a few passing glances, while Loth was accepted on the planet often other visitors were scrutinized. He nodded to a few trades packing up for the day and to a few of the other citizens he knew. "Hi Dalren," He waved nonchalantly to a Cardassan who ignored him. He chuckled to himself, "Dalren used to be in the military, he got busted back to Gil during the war when he accidently destroyed a Jem'Hadar troop transport." Loth looked at the other two, "How you finding our fair city?" He asked making conversation. "Haven't seen much of it." Riven said jovially then lowered his voice. "We've been kind of in retreat you know." He grinned at a passing Cardassian civilian who scowled at him before passing. "But I"m sure the more I see the more I'll like." Loth spat on the dusty ground “Yea right,” chuckled, “This city sucks, no ameaties and most of the civilians wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire." Loth said as they approached the bar, "This is my daily haunt." He said gesturing to the slightly dilapidated looking bar. Loth walked in he kicked his feet against the matt to shake off the worst of the dusk. "Hola K'trall" He said with a wave, "These are my friends Riven and Gerald." The heavy set cardassain grumbled and came around to the front of the bar "You know you can't afford it." Loth smiled across at K'trall "I'm feeling flush today it's not often i see my old friends, what do you fancy?" He asked turning to the two of them. "The same." Riven spoke in a neutral voice, slipping into the role he had been given. "And a bite of something edible if there's any to be found." he winked at the bartender before turning and surveying the patrons. K'Trall grunted, if you've got strong teeth and a strong stomach." he laughed as he poured their drinks then rustled in the counter for a bit of hard bread and sausage. Loth took a sip of the drink . "Ah Romulan Ale! Nice." He grinned, He glared across at Lt. Gerald daring him to say something about not drinking while on duty. "I know I’ll regret this in the morning." Loth downed the rest of his shot and poured himself another one. "It's good for the digestion... quite literally the acid in the drink helps dissolve whatever K'trall’s wife cooks up.” Riven smiled as Gerald took a sip of his drink. "How in the galaxy would a bartender in dive like this get Romulan ale?" K'trall grunted in answer. None of your damn business!" "I've found it best not to ask K'trall how he gets anything." Loth chuckled "Hey K'trall how did you end up here?" The bartender ignored the question. "Ok mind if my friend and I play?" Loth asked waving his Flute in the air. Riven laughed then, the tones washing across the bar. "Ah I love civilization, even if this is as close as I can get." Gerald appeared to be thoroughly enjoying the drink now, Riven sipped his slowly knowing what the effects would be if he ingested too wuickly. Romulan ale is a renowned smooth drink with the kick of a horse. It wouldn't do to get drunk before the meeting. Seeing Loth pulling out his instrument he began opening the oboe case with relish. Loth struck up the first tune making sure he was thinking about the tune well in advance of playing it hoping that Riven would be able to keep up, he could 'hear the notes in his head that he was trying to project to Riven to play. Riven hadn't been kidding earlier, he often played a flute in his chambers in the temple on Betazed. One of the perks of being older and having so much experience at his craft was that you had much time to yourself, of course to Riven it was more like being exiled. To his very core he was born to see and be seen, to heal and to be out among the people. That was the main reason of course that he often answered a plea from Starfleet, just to get away from the temple and mingle on a crowded ship with other beings. Although he was advancing in age, the council of the temple was ill advised to limit his duties, he was on fire for his craft, probably more so now than he had ever been. He easily fell in tune with Loth on the Oboe, following his thoughts, his practiced fingers stroking out the tune along with his breath. The closeness to other beings was exhilarating, it coaxed more from him than he would have thought he had the strength to offer. The notes that flowed from the Oboe perfectly matched Loth as he continued the tune. Loth was impressed at how quickly Riven seemed to pick up the tune, Loth broke off into a solo, and cast a suspcious eye over the audience. Loth thought it odd that the best way to remain hidden was often to be the most loud and expressive person in the village, anyone who was this open couldn't possibly be hiding something. He grinned to himself as he noticed a small table of Cardassians in the corner had to supress a smile, this was what he had been missing another player. As Loth began his solo Riven broke into a counterpoint, the notes of the instruments at once so different and yet so intermeshing, each player raising the effectiveness of the other. Gerald was deep into his second drink but he stopped to listen, awed, even the bartender K'Trall had to look up in amazement. Finally Loth brought the song towards the end winding down the song as a finality he stamped his foot twice on the floor boards to give a resounding thud to end the song. A smattering of applause came from around the bar. Loth took a bow smiling. Riven lowered the instrument and leaned back against the bar. nearly out of breath. Inwardly he was exulting not in the applause but at the energy that was flowing through the bar. Normally a place of despair, regret or anger it had for a time been transformed, brought into an unfamiliar realm of peace. Music could do that of course but it was more than the music, more than their presence. It was bringing out from the patrons what they rarely glimpsed in themselves. And that energy suffused him, it empowered him, giving him back the strength he had been expending the previous two days.
