Calvin spoke very softly to himself. Admiral McKline needed another task to be completed for him. Calvin had never been an Admirals Assistant before, and he would never want to do it again if he ever had the chance to get out of his current position. Calvin stood from his chair and moved away from his standard size assistants desk and over to the door that led into the Admiral's larger sized office. As he approached, the doors opened smoothly, and the Lt Cmdr walked in. "Yes, sir?" "Have a seat Commander," Admiral McKline stated with a monotone voice not looking up from the PADD he held in his palms. He had a devious plan to see just how easy it would be to upset his newly appointed assistant. "Aye sir," Calvin followed the order immediately and sat down in the chair directly in front of the desk and just a step away. "Calvin how long have you been with me? Just a few weeks I believe." McKline answered the question without giving Calvin a chance to answer. "I have spoken to the Captain that referred you to my office. I told him how you have been doing excellent work for me," the Admiral pulled Calvin in slowly. "Thank you sir, I am pleased to hear of your confidence in me." Calvin could not figure out where the Admiral was going with this information, but he had no reasonable reason to be concerned of the compliments. The Lt Cmdr took them with pleasure. The Admiral then stood from his desk, and walked around the desk and to the back of the chair Calvin was sitting in. "Cmdr Capps, I have really enjoyed your presence in my office. You have brought a certain professional attitude with you that I would really like to continue in my office." The Admiral moved back to his chair behind the admiral size desk. Calvin said nothing back this time, but smiled with a confused look on his face. He nodded to the Admiral and hoped the Admiral would continue with nothing else said from him. The Admiral smiled and could see that he had Calvin in his hands. The fish had taken the bait, it was now time to catch it. "It is with great pleasure for me to tell you that you are my new permanent assistant for at least up to the next year." The Admiral smiled widely and hoped to get the reaction he wanted out of Calvin. Calvin continued to smile, but his face turned bright red with disappointment. Calvin did not want to be an assistant to an Admiral no longer. He wanted to get back out there. He wanted to be on a ship that explored, and went on missions with real differences being made. He did not want to be behind a desk filling out paper work or setting up meetings, or playing diplomat to each admiral or high ranking officer that entered the office every day. The Admiral caught the face. He saw exactly what he was hoping for. He had seen Calvin's face twitch ,turn red, and saw the despair within his eyes. Admiral McKline knew Lt Cmdr Capps' feelings about being inside of an office. When he talked to the young man all he would talk about was being back on a ship. The Admiral was able to read the officer well, and knew that the day to day office work was not for him. Admiral McKline laughed loudly with a large belly laugh. "Excuse me sir?" Calvin mustered up to say with as much respect as possible. The Admiral continued to laugh. He raised his hand and waved it trying to tell Calvin not to say anything. He wanted to enjoy this for as long as he could. "No, no, no," he attempted to say but was unable to because he began to laugh even harder. He took a seat in his chair. The Admiral was some what of a playful person. He liked to think he ran a relaxed office, but when Calvin began to work for him he really did bring a professional manner to the office. That manner was dry and boring. and the Admiral wanted to once and for all get Calvin to smile. Admiral McKline stopped laughing, and took on a very serious face. "Lt Cmdr Capps, stand." He watched the officer stand at attention. "I am releasing you from your duties in my office effectively immediately, and am transferring you to the USS Spectre under the command of Captain T'Vhor. You position will be Security/Tactical officer. You are to leave immediately. You are dismissed." Calvin took on a huge smile. "Aye sir, thank you sir." He took the padd from the Admiral. "It was an honor working with you sir." The Lt Cmdr and Admiral exchanged a mutual look knowing what the other was really thinking. Calvin left the office light headed with happiness. (Reply Tethys) "Someone ordered a forcefield, complicated in nature and as Blue as can be", said H'Chir, "....or was it Green.” "No matter, a forcefield is a forcefield and a forcefield is precisely what you shall have Ensign Tethys, whatever colour it happens to be", ~If he’s this happy after taking whatever. I want some~ (Reply Tethys) "I'm just going to tap into the EPS system nodes and run an interface link to the beam emitters", said H'Chir "I can give you multiphasic shielding within a two metre proximity of our.....", "...our friend here", said H'Chir motioning towards the drone with a nod of his head before continuing on with a series of tests on the interface device. (Reply Tethys) "The interface link will take care of this, the resultant field will be exponentially hi-lo variable and adaptive both in intensity and to the operator, whilst hindering anything containing nanites", said H'Chir, "which reminds me...", "...better not let Lieutenant Donaldson work with her" ~Well that would be unfortunate~ (Reply Tethys, Any) "Do you have a nanite sample at all?" As Andrew watched H’Chir do his job he really hoped that he did not stuff up, being assimilated was not something he wanted to try. (Reply Tethys) "Voila",said H’Chir jubilantly before placing the sample down onto the floor and then exiting safely without a problem. "Is there anything else I can help either of you with?", asked H'Chir. Andrew shook his head. ~Maybe tell me what's making you so happy?~ (Reply Tethys) "Then I will bid you good day", ~Okay mate~ "Blue blue electric blue......." Andrew looked at the disappearing H’Chir. ~Blimy he’s in a good mood. Better go and tell Kreung may be some thing is wrong~ He looked away and back to drone and then to Tethys. “Now that we have the force field up and going, Shall we get started?” (reply Tethys) (Reply Tethys, Any) (Posted by Robbie) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix One Three, Level Two - Dr Samantha Gunnell - 20:19) Gunnell had rather reassuringly been met at the beam-in coordinates by one of the Marines, a tall Lieutenant that looked as though he could have snapped a Borg or two in half along his way there. Kowalski had ordered it so of course, it wasn't that Samantha was a woman, far from it in fact, it was purely because they were still not sure that all the drones had been rounded up yet and the last thing they wanted now was for their 'expert' to become assimilated! "Welcome aboard Maam, sir....if you'll both come this way and do exactly as I say en route if the need happens to arise", said the Marine, "I'll take you down to the primary computer core" Gunnell took a deep breath, moved her equipment kit to the rear of her hip and then followed the Marines lead, the Spectre Security officer following also and guarding the Doctor from the rear as they made off down a rather foreboding looking darkened corridor. "What happened to the lights?", asked Gunnell. "Everything went down when we killed the power maam, where already working on getting some rays up again but until then, it's careful as you go I'm afraid", said the Marine as he himself 'carefully' picked his way forwards, his trusty III-C moving left and right as he went, just in case they encountered one of the missing drones. He didn't want to mention that particular little concern though of course through fear of panicking the Doctor before they arrived. "We're quite close, just up ahead and to the left", said the Marine as they emerged into an area that seemed to have just a little more illumination now...or was it just her eyes acclimatising. (Reply Talbot, Any) (Posted by Alan) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix One Five, Level Four - STI Agent - Lt. Cmndr Brian Rogers - 20:20) =/\= Very well sir. The Spectre should beam over oxygen and breathing equipment as well, =/\= Talbot suggested. Rogers nodded. "Alright," he said, tapping his comm badge. "Rogers to Spectre," he said. =/\= Lt. Chenoll here, Commander, =/\= The Bolian answered on the other end. "Can you beam us over some atmosphere processors, set to Earth standard?" Rogers asked. =/\= Yes, sir, cueing them up now, =/\= The Ops chief said, and soon, three metallic cylinders with a keypad and vent on top of each appeared. Slowly, they silently began pumping their familiar oxygen-nitrogen air. "I've got some processors here, Ensign, it should give us enough time to stay here, provided we don't wander too far from them," said Rogers, as he positioned one of them near the crawlspace where Talbot had gone, hopefully giving the Ensign some good air. (reply Talbot, any) (Posted by Kevin Schram) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix One Four, Level Four - Primary Computer Core - ACEO Ensign Peter Talbot - 20:21) Peter began to feel light headed, due to the heat and depleted oxygen level inside the computer core access tunnel, he decided to crawl out. Just as he began to move backward, Lt. Commander Rogers yelled into the tube. "I've got some processors here, Ensign, it should give us enough time to stay here, provided we don't wonder too far from them," said Rogers. Peter shouted in reply, "Just in time sir, I'm coming out." (Reply None) (Posted by Jonathon Alber) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix One Four, Level Four - Primary Computer Core - ACEO Ensign Peter Talbot - 20:23) A few seconds later Talbot emerged from the access tunnel. As he stood he adjusted his uniform and took a few deep breaths of the cooler more oxygenated air. Talbot turned and began to update Rogers on his progress. "Sir, I've done all I can in there until Dr. Gunnell arrives and we set up a link to the Spectre," Talbot reported. (reply Rogers IYW) While Talbot was speaking to Rogers they heard a clang that sounded like an iron grating being moved. Instantly Rogers raised his phaser rifle and Talbot grabbed his phaser from his belt and aimed in the direction of the noise. A husky sounding voice came out of the darkness shouting Starfleet indentification. Talbot yelled back, "This is bravo team come on in." The marine entered along with Dr. Gunnell who immediately began to assess the situation and inquire of Talbot. "So what do we have here Ensign?", inquired the Doctor, "looks to me as though it's a variant on a type two core if I'm not mistaken", she added . Talbot replied, "I was unable to make much of the Borg encryption algorithm on those consoles so I tapped directly into the core down that access tunnel." Talbot continued speaking as Gunnell looked closer at the monitors, "I was able to ascertain the size of the data files, near 600,000 exabytes , my suggestion is to create a hyperlink to Spectre's computer banks and upload the data. It will take time but I believe it to be the best option, however you are the expert Doctor." "Your right, this is not going to be a quick job", she said, "we can strip the bioneural jell packs from the ODN relays and take them back to the Spectre, but that will risk damage to the data.... plus, I know of many instances where the Borg incorporate cascade failure devices to protect their data if that route is taken", said the Doctor. Talbot replied, "Doctor, Lt. Commander Rogers recommends we upload the entire core segregating all the Borg data from the Spectres' using partitions before we begin the transfer." Talbot noticed the Doctor's nod in agreement with Rogers plan to protect the Spectre's computer core. Then she commented. "Personally, all I really want is the relevant data pertaining to the subspace river itself, the Captain however, after conference with Lieutenant Commander Rogers apparently wants the entire data intact, which means that stripping the packs is out and we will have to start by incorporating a dynamic high speed data link between the core and that of the Spectre's", said Doctor Gunnell. "My tricorder and data recorder are already linked to the Borg computer and ready to transmit the data all we need is a high speed transmitter to relay the signal to the Spectre," said Talbot. "I'll have it beamed over, the sooner you can connect it up we can make a start", said Gunnell, "I don't want to be here any longer than I have to", she added, "...and I have yet to interface with the probe launched by the Spectre to monitor the rivers current activity." Talbot could sense Gunnell's nervousness at being on the Borg vessel. He tried to assure her they would be back on the Spectre soon. "Right Doctor, I will get the link established and get this upload completed as soon as possible," Talbot said. (reply Rogers, Gunnell, Kirien, any) (posted by Jonathon Alber) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix One Four, Level Four, Primary Computer Core - Doctor Samantha Gunnell - 20:24) Samantha moved onwards, her left foot momentarily catching in an iron grating as she dis so, she was however quietly reassured that her two man escort was protecting her progress towards their goal and only mildly embarrassed at her slip. Once they had rounded the corner though, voices could suddenly be heard. Samantha felt a chill run down her spine as the words registered, irrespective of the fact that they were clearly friendly. Borg drones only ever spoke when it was necessary and their voices, as always were inhuman and cold. These voices were nothing like that at all. The Marine suddenly called out his presence and a Starfleet Ensign promptly responded. (Reply Talbot) The Marine lowered his weapon and then stepped to one side in order to allow the Doctor to enter the area from which the crewman had appeared. "So what do we have here Ensign?", enquired the Doctor, "looks to me as though it's a variant on a type two core if I'm not mistaken", she added looking around at the various displays gracing the gunmetal coloured bulkheads. (Reply Talbot) Gunnell moved towards one of the monitors to scrutinize it's output, then she placed her kit bag upon the floor before fishing about within it to remove a modified tricorder which she quickly activated. Within seconds the Ensigns report had been verified, the Doctor turning towards him to concur with his findings. "Your right, this is not going to be a quick job", she said, "we can strip the bioneural jell packs from the ODN relays and take them back to the Spectre, but that will risk damage to the data.... plus, I know of many instances where the Borg incorporate cascade failure devices to protect their data if that route is taken", said the Doctor. (Reply Talbot) Gunnell sighed heavilly and nodded in agreeance. Samantha brushed a hair from her forehead that had become plastered down by the humidity of their environment, then she addressed the Ensign. "Tell me Ensign, given the sheer amount of data we are dealing with here and the fact that data degradation will occur exponentially if we exceed a five petabyte per second transfer rate, would you think it wise if we incorporated a variable flow capacitor into the link to maintain steady throughput?", asked the Doctor. (Reply Talbot) Gunnell nodded in agreeance. "I thought as much, we will have to be alert for cascade failure at source also, whether initiated as a Borg booby trap or through sheer integrity breakdown", said Samantha. (Reply Talbot) Gunnell ran her tests once again and then isolated some of the more likely circuits that might hinder them, then she turned once again to Talbot. "OK, we have a direct line to the core, once you connect up and initiate transfer with the Spectre I'll monitor integrity from here", said Gunnell, motioning to her trusty tricorder as she spoke. (Reply Talbot) "Ready whenever you are", she said. (Reply Talbot, Any) (Posted by Alan) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix One Four, Level Four - Primary Computer Core - ACEO Ensign Peter Talbot - 20:33) A few moments after Dr. Gunnell requested the high speed transmitter the familiar glow and shimmer of a transporter beam deposited the device right in front of Talbot. When it arrived Peter began to examine the unit and work out a schematic in his head of the most efficient uplink pathway. From one of the Borg consoles Dr. Gunnell questioned Talbot. "Tell me Ensign, given the sheer amount of data we are dealing with here and the fact that data degradation will occur exponentially if we exceed a five petabyte per second transfer rate, would you think it wise if we incorporated a variable flow capacitor into the link to maintain steady throughput?" "Absolutely Doctor, even with the flow capacitor transferring data faster than 5 petabytes per second will degrade the data to much, possibly beyond recognition. We will have to stay at 5 pb/s." Peter paused a second to do the time calculations in his head. "With 600,000 exabytes to transfer completion time is 20 hours," Talbot finished. The Doctor shook her head agreeing with Talbot and said. "I thought as much, we will have to be alert for cascade failure at source also, whether initiated as a Borg booby trap or through sheer integrity breakdown." Talbot responded, "An excellent suggestion Doctor." And returned working with the transmitter. Talbot captured the signal being sent from his tricorder and synced it with the high speed transmitter. "The signal is buffered and synced," Talbot said "OK, we have a direct line to the core, once you connect up and initiate transfer with the Spectre I'll monitor integrity from here", said Gunnell "Are you all set Doctor?" Talbot asked "Ready whenever you are", she said. With himself and the Doctor ready to transmit Talbot tapped his combadge and said, "Talbot to Spectre." (Reply Chenoll) "We are ready to begin transmission of the Borg data, if the Spectre's computer core is protected. We will begin on your signal," Talbot reported. (reply Chenoll, any) (Posted by Jonathon Alber) (USS Spectre - Main Bridge - Chief OPS - Lt. Chenoll - 20:34) The Bolian had just finished setting up a small isolated area of the Spectre's computer core where they could place the data. She also set up several automated protocols that would end any processes within the data that attempted to copy themselves or modifiy other files. And as the final line of defense, she scheduled the Ops officer on duty to check every hour to make sure the Borg data wasn't trying to assimlate any other data. Then, Ensign Talbot from the Borg cube called. =/\=Talbot to Spectre. =/\= "Go ahead, Mr. Talbot," Chenoll replied. =/\=We are ready to begin transmission of the Borg data, if the Spectre's computer core is protected. We will begin on your signal, =/\= Talbot said. "I've got several security systems in place, Ensign, we should be okay on this end," Chenoll explained. "Go ahead," she said. (reply Talbot) She watched the data start to pour in. It was a lot of data, and it was coming in at an amazing rate, but thankfully she had squared off more than enough space on the computer core. "That's certainly a lot of bits, Ensign, but we should be okay on this end," she said. (reply Talbot, any) (Posted by Kevin Schram) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix One Four, Level Four - Primary Computer Core - ACEO Ensign Peter Talbot - 20:35) Talbot's com message was answered on the Spectre by Chief of Operations Lt. Chenoll. She indicated the Spectre was ready for the Borg data transfer to begin. =/\=I've got several security systems in place, Ensign, we should be okay on this end, Go ahead=/\= Lt. Chenoll said. With the go ahead from Spectre Talbot initiated the hyperlink and started the Borg download. Talbot set the transfer speed to 5 petabytes/sec. Talbot continued his conversation with Lt. Chenoll over the com channel. "Lt. Chenoll, the Borg data transfer should be complete in 20 hours at this speed," Talbot commented. =/\=That's certainly a lot of bits, Ensign, but we should be okay on this end=/\= Chenoll replied. Talbot said,"Very good Lieutenant, Doctor Gunnell and I are monitoring the data and signal integrity from here. Thank you for your assistance. Talbot out" Talbot closed the com channel and turned to monitor the hyperlink's signal. (reply none, any) (posted by Jonathon Alber) (USS Spectre - Captain's Ready Room - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 20:57) The Captain had been pondering the question as to why Lieutenant Donaldson might possibly want to insist that the Borg drone be bought on board for surveillance, the very notion of this had clearly unnerved some of the Spectre's bridge crew, it was hardly surprising though for the thought of a member of such an odious species 'alive' and in their midst was not a pleasing one by anyones standards. The Security chiefs reassurances had seemed valid though and anyone that knew the man knew he was as upright and sensible as they came, with that in mind though the Captain still had a feeling that he was not being fully honest about his intentions right now, although why that might be was anyones guess. His imminent arrival would perhaps reveal more for he had already requested to return to the ship prematurely and had subsequently been ordered to the bridge for a report on his actions in view of that. The chime was expected of course and was immediately answered with a curt 'come' from the CO. The door slid aside and in walked the man himself. "Lieutenant", said the Captain immediately motioning to the seat opposite him. (Reply Donaldson, IYW) "An explanation as to why you insisted on bringing this Borg aboard please if you will Lieutenant", said the Captain, his hands clasping in front of him upon the desk now. (Reply Donaldson) It was at that precise moment that a call from the bridge came through, an apparent contact from a Federation vessel no less. The Captain raised a hand briefly in Donaldson's direction and informed him to hold on that thought for one moment, then he took the call. =/\=Sir, I have a long range communication from Captain Talasario on the USS Humboldt.... he is requesting to speak with you=/\= ~Talasario?~ "Put him through Ensign", said the Captain wondering now why on earth the previously renegade Captain might be wanting to speak with him, he didn't have to wait long though for the monitor on the desk suddenly came to life with an answer. "Captain", said T'Vhor with a nod, recognising Talasario from the Doenitz defection mission that had occurred during the finalisation of the civil war immediately of course. =/\=Good to see you again Captain T'Vhor, I trust you are well?=/\= "I am fine", said T'Vhor, "how may I help you Captain?" =/\=Seems I'm going to be helping you Captain T'Vhor, fleet command has re-routed us to your position in order to liase with you.... I understand you need the dedicated services of a science vessel=/\= said Talasario. The hybrid CO quirked his head in response and then raised an eyebrow in typical Vulcan fashion. "I was not aware of this re-route", said T'Vhor, "although I can see the logic in fleet command arranging such a liason. What is your ETA to our current position?" =/\=At maximum warp, we can be with you in fifteen hours=/\= said Talasario. =/\=I hear that you ran into a few Borg out here?=/\= he added quizically. The Captain nodded and then glanced briefly to Donaldson opposite him, his face somewhat contemplative right now and emotively projective at the very mention of the word Borg. What was it that he was hiding? There was a connection of some sort here but regardless of the CO's empathic sensory awareness, it seemed that Donaldson's mind was erratic, elsewhere and giving nothing away. "Understood", said the Captain in response to Talasario's ETA, "I will look forwards to our meeting once again", he added with another customery nod. =/\=I too will look forwards to that Captain, we can discuss the MDP debacle over a meal perhaps=/\= "Perhaps", said Captain T'Vhor pondering the fall of the mars defence perimeter as he spoke, "until then.... Spectre out" The screen then returned to the starfleet crest once again and the Captain returned his attention to Lieutenant Donaldson opposite. "You were saying Lieutenant", said T'Vhor referring back to the point where the communication had suddenly interrupted them.... (Reply Donaldson) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Captain's Ready Room – TAC/SC Charles “Chuck” Donaldson - 20:57) "Lieutenant", said the Captain immediately motioning to the seat opposite him. Chuck sat down and tried to make himself at ease. "An explanation as to why you insisted on bringing this Borg aboard please if you will Lieutenant", said the Captain, his hands clasping in front of him upon the desk now. “Well, Captain, I ...” Chuck began. He was interrupted by an urgent communication from the bridge. "Captain", said T'Vhor with a nod, recognizing Talasario from the Doenitz defection mission that had occurred during the finalization of the civil war immediately of course. =/\=Good to see you again Captain T'Vhor, I trust you are well?=/\= "I am fine", said T'Vhor, "how may I help you Captain?" =/\=Seems I'm going to be helping you Captain T'Vhor, fleet command has re-routed us to your position in order to liaise with you.... I understand you need the dedicated services of a science vessel=/\= said Talasario. The hybrid CO quirked his head in response and then raised an eyebrow in typical Vulcan fashion. "I was not aware of this re-route", said T'Vhor, "although I can see the logic in fleet command arranging such a liaison. What is your ETA to our current position?" Chuck started to squirm ... why was he here, again? =/\=At maximum warp, we can be with you in fifteen hours=/\= said Talasario. =/\=I hear that you ran into a few Borg out here?=/\= he added quizically. The Captain nodded and then glanced briefly to Donaldson opposite him, his face somewhat contemplative right now and emotively projective at the very mention of the word ‘Borg’. Chuck shifted slightly in his chair. ~What can I say? He can order Judith destroyed ... what can I tell him that will lead to a desirable result?~ “The truth is, sir, that I know the person that everyone else sees as a threat.” Said Chuck. He paused for a moment to gain insight into the Captain’s thoughts. (reply T’Vhor IYW) “She’s my wife, sir.” Chuck blurted out what to him seemed the most obvious and to everyone else had been a difficult labyrinth to navigate. (Reply T’Vhor) (Posted by Anton) (USS Spectre - Captain's Ready Room – CO, Captain T'Vhor - 21:03) "You were saying Lieutenant", said the Captain referring back to the point where the communication had suddenly interrupted them.... Donaldson suddenly appeared to be wrestling with his thoughts again, the brief distraction of the conversation between his CO and the Admiral on the screen, giving him only a momentary release from having to face his personal demons. As it was though, the final release via spilling the beans so to speak was apparently easier than he had expected it to be. “The truth is, sir, that I know the person that everyone else sees as a threat........ she’s my wife, sir.”, he had said, at which point the pieces of the puzzle finally fell into place. The Captain allowed himself to relax somewhat as the realization of the situation struck home. "I see", he said, "this drone is.... Judith?", he added. (Reply Donaldson) "Why did you not explain this sooner?", asked the Captain. (Reply Donaldson) The Captain nodded in response, he knew from personal experience the pain of losing someone, for him though there would never be the chance to find that person again through any other medium than a dream, for Donaldson however there was still that chance to have and hold that person once again. The Captain pondered the situation a little longer, then he quizzed the Security chief a little more. "Lieutenant", he began, "do you think that Judith can be returned to some semblance of normality given the duration of her assimilation?" (Reply Donaldson) "I would assume that you saw no trace whatsoever of her 'Humanity' upon realizing who she was?", said the Captain. (Reply Donaldson) The Captain nodded again, he truly felt for the man now, the angst upon his face was more evident than it had been since he had returned, and he could tell that the only place he really wanted to be right now was at his wife's side, a fact which was to prompt the next logical question. "I need to know Lieutenant....is this going to interfere with your duties in any way? you are the Sec chief, I need to know that I can rely upon you, and if I can't then I need to know about it now", said the Captain. He stared at the ceiling of his quarters and addressed the computer. "Computer. Start recording. Personal log Stardate 2408.06.06. Sixth month of exile. I had an encounter with the captain again. I can't believe it's been six months. I was chomping at the bit to get back into space and what happens? I get stuck on a science vessel being commanded by my father's old friend, Captain Talasario. It doesn't seem fair. My father's sitting in a Rehabilitation Facility on Earth because of what he did during the Civil War, while Talasario is not only is walking free, but has his own starship. I suppose justice is blind if you defect right before the war ends. It pains me every time I bump into him. "I've put in for a transfer so many times I've lost count." Adams turned over on his side and looking at himself in the mirror. "Don't get me wrong. I will do my duty to the best of my abilities, wherever I'm posted. I just feel like I'm being punished for taking a leave of absence to take care of my mother after she was dragged off to an internment camp during the war. I have respect for my commanding officer, Commander Bradley, but it's hard to get excited working for Captain Talasario. Chris sat back up. "Computer. End recording. Store under Personal Logs." Standing up Chris started removing his uniform jacket when a beep sounded over the intercom system in the ship followed by several panels in the room turning yellow. =^= Yellow Alert. Lieutenant Christopher Adams pushed his way through the dozen or so people starting to crowed around Commander Bradley, the chief engineer of the Humboldt. Silence broke across the small crowd as the commander spoke up. "Attention on deck," shouted Bradley. The engineering crew broken into formation on either side of the engineering hallway. "Listen up people," said Bradley pacing back and forth between his crew. "Captain Talasario has triggered the yellow alert and ordered us to proceed at maximum warp to rendezvous with the USS Spectre. The Spectre has made contact with a Borg ship." Bradley paused to let this bit of information sink in. "Until the yellow alert is lifted, we are going to be on double shifts. Our ETA is 1200 hours tomorrow. Gamma shift I need you to go hit the rack for a few more hours of shut eye. You are to relieve Alpha shift at 0100. Gamma shift. You are dismissed." Bradley waited as four officers left the engineering department. "T'Krill and O'Donnell, I need you to watch the flow regulators to make sure they are working at peak efficiency. Farvel and Adams, I need you over here at workstations three and four. We are going to be going through some of the preliminary scans sent by the Spectre and we are going to bone up one some of the latest Starfleet intel on the Borg. All right, everybody. Let's get to work." The group of crewmen quickly snapped to their duties while Ensign Farvel and Lieutenant Adams walked over to the workstations with the chief engineer. "Okay," stated Bradley sitting down at workstation three, fingers flying over the panel giving his crewmen access to the classified information. "Here's all the latest data. Adams I need you to go through the latest intel. Farvel, you analyze the sensor data from the Spectre. I expect a report from both of you summarizing the data by 0100." "Aye, sir," said the two engineers almost in unison. With a nod, Bradley got up from the workstation and headed towards the warp core to start monitoring the data that was coming from ship's systems. Adams shared a worried glance with Ensign Farvel and they both sat down at the workstations. Adams's fingers started typing on the console as he started going through the different reports and organizing the data. The next fifteen hours were going to be quite tense. Adams hated waiting. (Reply Donaldson) (Reply Donaldson) (Posted by Robbie) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix One Four, Level Four - Primary Computer Core - ACEO Ensign Peter Talbot - 22:40) Aboard the Borg vessel Ensign Peter Talbot and Doctor Samantha Gunnell had been monitoring the signal integrity and data stream of the Borg computer core download. They had been at it for more than 2 hours without any problems. Talbot glanced over at Doctor Gunnell she looked somewhat bored babysitting a data transfer. The Doctor had mentioned earlier she still needed to interface with the probe launched by the Spectre into the subspace river. Talbot spoke up breaking the almost hour long silence, "Doctor, I will continue to monitor the data integrity, if you wish to go interface with the probe in the subspace river." (reply Gunnell) The Doctor seemed relieved at the suggestion. From the look on her Marine escort's face he was overjoyed at the prospect of moving to another area as well, most marines do not enjoy waiting especially for "science projects". "Very well Doctor Gunnell. See you back on the Spectre," Talbot replied. Doctor Gunnell and the Marine set out to monitor the probe, leaving Rogers, Kirien, and Talbot at the Borg computer core. Speaking of returning to the Spectre Talbot was becoming very aware of his tiredness and the growing length of his current duty shift. The effects of the stimulant administered by Doctor Tethys were gone. Talbot feeling quite desperate to stay awake and complete this his first mission reached down into his kit and pulled out a hypospray containing a stimulant. He had taken the drug from an emergency med kit back on the Spectre. Talbot looked at both Kirien and Rogers who were both intently watching and patrolling the corridors in that section on the Borg vessel. Talbot crouched down behind a console placing the hypospray to his neck he administered half the drug contained in it. Almost immediately Talbot felt rejuvenated. Peter thought to himself, ~No harm just a pick me up for the long haul.~ Talbot went back to monitoring the data transfer. ~Less than 18 hours to go.~ (reply Gunnell, any) (posted by Jonathon Alber) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix One Four, Level Four - Primary Computer Core - Dr Samantha Gunnell - 22:42) It would seem that both Gunnell and the young Engineering Ensign had ran out of things to say about the integrity of their data stream hours beforehand, but then, one could only discuss cyclic redundancy error checks and flow compensation so many times before it became boring even to them! Talbot obviously knew his stuff though and had remained steadfast throughout, his attention hardly faltering for one moment from the task in hand. "Doctor, I will continue to monitor the data integrity, if you wish to go interface with the probe in the subspace river.", he had said upon glancing over to her and sensing her attention seemingly straying elsewhere. Gunnell sighed and then looked over to the Ensign. "Are you sure, I mean yes.... I do need to run those experiments soon so, if your sure you are ok with the monitoring", said Gunnell pausing now in an afterthought "But, if I go now I'll need our friend here to escort me which will obviously leave you here alone", she added. (Reply Talbot) "I'll have someone else come baby si.... I mean, keep an eye on things here", said the Marine curtly, "you won't be here by yourselves for long" (Reply Talbot, IYW) The Doctor nodded and then stood, the Marine moving to escort her onwards as Talbot said his goodbyes and then reassured her that he'd see her back on Spectre when they were finally done. Gunnell smiled and moved towards the door, confident in the Engineers abilities to complete the job satisfactorily, but also wondering whether he would actually be able to remain awake for the duration. He had seemed rather tired after all. Samantha headed off down the corridor immediately behind the Marine as he led, quietly relieved now that the lighting had been reinstated... no more catching feet in grids for her. (Reply Talbot, Any) (Posted by Alan) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix One Four, Level Four - Primary Computer Core - ACEO Ensign Peter Talbot - 22:43) Doctor Gunnell agreed that Talbot would be able to handle the Borg data transfer monitoring on his own and almost gladly turned over her duties there to begin her efforts with the probe. She did seem somewhat concerned with Talbot's security however and she commented "Are you sure, I mean yes.... I do need to run those experiments soon so, if your sure you are ok with the monitoring, But, if I go now I'll need our friend here to escort me which will obviously leave you here alone," she said. Talbot replied, "No need to worry Doctor there has been no sign of Borg activity on this deck." Gunnell's Marine escort seemed very enthusiastic about his chance to get moving and was encouraged by Talbot's remarks regarding Borg activity. "I'll have someone else come baby si.... I mean, keep an eye on things here", said the Marine curtly, "you won't be here by yourselves for long" Talbot commented to the Marine, "We have things well in hand, Lt. Commander Rogers and Lt. He had sat the alarm to warn him when the ship was one hour away from the Spectre so he would have enough time to put his uniform on and make sure all his things were together before boarding the Spectre. What Calvin had not planned on doing was falling asleep while reading his book on the somewhat comfortable couch that was provided to him in the guest quarters. He wanted to close his eyes again, and go back to sleep. Ultimately he knew that was not the right choice. He moved his propped legs off the couch and pushed his body weight down on to them. He first took the book he was reading, Watership Down, and placed back into his traveling bag. He walked to the bathroom to clean up, and fix his hair. He was currently wearing one of his favorite outfits. He knew that once he transferred over to the Spectre he would be wearing his uniform far more frequent than his civilian clothes. He opened the chest and took out his new uniform. He looked at the color of the uniform. He had never worn a security uniform before. He studied OPS in Starfleet, and he held positions in Ops in his early Starfleet career. After Ops he held various positions in command, but he had never been in tactical/security before. It was harder than what Calvin had thought for him to realize that he would be losing his command position, but he had gotten over the fact. He was going to wear the yellow color uniform proudly and with respect. He was excited to be stepping into a new position for him. He saw this change as good, and would just enhance his skills. He put his uniform on, and stepped in front of the mirror. He took his pips out of the small black box. Staring at the mirror he placed the pips precisely where the Starfleet regulations told him to. Finished, he stepped back to take a look. He looked great in yellow, and he was ready to begin a new era on the Spectre. "On screen", he said and the viewscreen quickly filled with the familiar view of Talasario set against an easily recognizable Science bridge module. =/\=Greetings once again Captain T'Vhor, I trust that this morning finds you well=/\= "Well enough", said the Captain, "likewise yourself" Talasario smiled and then leaned slightly forwards in his chair, a somewhat devious look upon his face as he did so. =/\=I understand that you took prisoners from that Borg ship Captain, I can take a few of them off your hands if you wish, could use some payback for the wolf 359 incident methinks=/\= "I think not Captain", said the Vulcan hybrid, "I intend to use every means at my disposal to de-assimilate these people and give them the best possible chance for a return to a normal life again", he added. "I would suggest that you bring your ship alongside us Captain", said T'Vhor, "the river is displaying some unusual external eddies, no doubt triggered by the Borg's interference within it", he added. =/\=Right you are Captain T'Vhor, we'll be with you shortly..... incidently, I have a crew transfer in tow for you, a Lieutenant Adams, a damned fine engineer but it would seem....he wants a change of surroundings=/\= "Is this cleared through the proper channels?", asked T'Vhor. Talasario quirked his head slightly to one side and gave another sideways smile. =/\=Would I do anything not in keeping with the book Captain=/\= The response was rhetorical of course and the Spectre's CO chose to remain silent on that one. If he had learned one thing from Talasario's past behaviour it was that the man was a wildcard, how 52nd fleet command had chosen to grant the man a command so soon after his defection was a question that hung on many a lip, none less than T'Vhor himself. "I'll make the relevant arrangements for Lieutenant Adams, and ready the already gathered information regarding the Borg and any effects they have had on the river thus far", said T'Vhor. =/\=Excellent, we'll see you then then.... "what is the latest on the drones we brought aboard.... more importantly, Lieutenant Donaldsons wife?” “She is doing well. All her Borg components there could be removed with out endangering her life were removed last night. Although she is still unconscious in sickbay but she seems to be coping well with the surgery. (Reply Williams, Any) (Posted by Alan) (USS Humboldt - Captain's Ready Room - CO, JT Talasario - 11:16) Vulcan's! Why did they always have to be so damned logical and by the book? Talasario wasn't the first CO to be thinking that of course and he very probably wouldn't be the last either, truth be known though, as far as he was concerned it was about time they all tried a different route. Why the hell anyone would want to go all mamby pamby and try and save individual Borg crew members was completely beyond him, and yet the Spectre's CO seemingly wanted to create a nice little secluded playpen for them to play in whilst they wended their way towards becoming Human again... or whatever species they happened to start up as. JT now stood in his ready room looking out through the windows with his fists clenched behind his back, the warp stars streaked rearwards against the backdrop of black and the Humboldt sped onwards towards it's 'bland' destination. Talasario had been used to a warship before they had given him the Humboldt and to be honest, it had not sat well with him at all. For a man of his experience, both Tactical and otherwise, he had felt that it had been an insult to his command abilities, and considerating the huge intelligence database he had turned over following his defection from Doenitz's ranks, a Science vessel was nothing more than a smack in the face to him. The Captain drew a sharp intake of breath and then turned about to face the room again, his desk was nothing like the one he'd lorded over on the Alacrity and it lacked the tactical linkup provided by the former, he was still a Captain though and not a bumped down Commander so that much was a plus at least. Taking his seat he pulled up the roster on the console before him, noting as he did so that the transfers he had taken aboard at Starbase sixty four were flagged as pending, plus there was the already mentioned matter of the Engineering Lieutenant, Adams. The Lieutenant had twice requested transfer already and been denied due to ship borne commitments, it seemed that now was the time for this to finally be granted and formally addressed with the man himself so with that in mind, Talasario tapped at his combadge. "Talasario to Lieutenant Adams" (Reply Adams) "My ready room if you please Lieutenant... I have something that may be of interest to you", said Talasario as he continued to scan the crew manifest, both enlisted and otherwise. (Reply Adams) Talasario closed the comms in his usual abrupt manner and then pulled up one or two of the officers in transit to the Spectre, a Lieutenant Commander Capps catching his eye. Capps? He'd heard of this officer before, wasn't he once posted to the Paladin under Straton? The Captain scratched his head and pondered this for a while, perhaps there were more than one Capps in the fleet, maybe so, maybe not, it was neither here nor there really so JT moved on to another and then settled back into his chair. It wasn't long though before the ramifications of yet another Science foray entered his head once again, prompted no less by a communication from the bridge. =/\=Sir, we are coming up on the Spectre's coordinates.... fifteen minutes to contact=/\= Why couldn't it have been a call to arms, red alert, all hands to battle stations, ready all torpedoes? Talasario missed the adrenalin fix... "Thank you Ensign. Prepare to drop out of warp, slow to full impulse at ten thousand kilometres and stand by for further orders", he ordered. =/\=Aye sir, bridge out=/\= Talasario then stood to fetch a drink from the replicator before returning to his seat to await the arrival of Lieutenant Adams. "Aye, sir. Adams here." =/\=My ready room if you please Lieutenant,=/\= stated the captain. =/\=I have something that may be of interest to you.=/\= "Acknowledged. On my..." The lieutenant's sentence trailed off as the beep of the comm channel being closed by the captain cut him off. ~Nice. What now?~ thought Adams to himself rolling his eyes. "Ensign Farvel," Adams called over to one of his crew mates on the Alpha Shift. "I need you to take over this station while I go find out what the captain wants." The ensign nodded and walked towards the monitoring console while Adams walked out of Engineering towards the closest turbolift down the hall. When they were alone Andrew turned to H’Chir. “Mr H’Chir it has been noticed by me and other members of the crew that you have been acting differently lately are you okay and is there anything wrong?” (Reply H’Chir) (Reply T’Vhor, H’Chir, Any) (Posted by Robbie) (USS Spectre - Engineering - CEO, Lt H'Chir - 11:22) It seemed that lately Engineering was a hive of activity. This was strange in that the ship was actually on standby doing pretty much nothing but holding station just off the subspace conduit of the river. Now, if it had been at high warp with the plasma flow valves wide open and the core beating at high velocity then the activity could have been understood, as it was though...... well, you get the picture. The Chief Engineering officer himself was now laying upon his back, his upper body seemingly eaten up by the innards of one of the consoles as he delved within it to monitor something only Chief Engineers ever knew about, it was probably nothing more than an EPS valve having showed an error during a diagnostic rundown, maybe a little more perhaps but probably not. H'Chirs contemplation of the errant valve ceased only when a voice was to be heard from outside, a voice he knew well but did not want to be having any dealings with right now, for it invariably meant tests of some kind, and H'Chir disliked tests intensely! “Good morning Mr H’Chir can I have a word with you in private for a moment?”, the Doctor had asked. That was a silly question if ever there was and H'Chir was half tempted to say 'Sure Doc, climb on in here if you wish, it's as private as can possibly be'..... As it was though, he had only closed his eyes and shook his head in a kind of 'go away' sentimentality that only he himself understood. ~What does he want now~ "Coming right out Doc", said H'Chir as he shimmied out slowly from under the console and stood to brush himself down of the light covering of dust that had collected upon his uniform. "Private, yes...", said H'Chir looking about the place, "we can go in there if you wish", he added and then moved off towards a nearby door, opening it and entering into the room beyond followed by Doc Williams, or rather the First officer as he was known these days. H'Chir, in his somewhat absent mindedness had neglected to call him sir but Williams was not the sort to make a big deal of ceremony and probably hadn't minded anyway. If he had then he hadn't given any impression of it anyway. "So, what can I do for you.... sir", said H'Chir, remembering this time to use the proper form of address just in case. “Mr H’Chir it has been noticed by me and other members of the crew that you have been acting differently lately, are you okay and is there anything wrong?”, asked the FO. H'Chir shrugged his shoulders and shook his head in the negative. "Everything's fine.....explain to me 'differently' though, I was not aware that I was acting differently", said H'Chir a little puzzled now. (reply Talasario) (posted by Jason French) (USS Humboldt - Captain's Ready Room - Captain JT Talasario - 11:23) Talasario took a sip of his coffee, savouring the almost sweet caffeine hit as he did so. His thoughts were elsewhere right now and despite his position of relative power, it was probably not a good thing that they were heading in that particular direction. At forty two years of age the Captain had probably seen more than his fair share of conflict during his years of service, granted four of those years had been spent actually fighting the fifty second but nevertheless, conflict was conflict irrespective of what side you were batting for. Lost in thought, the chime suddenly sounded. Talasario looked up and then granted the unseen, though expected crewman entry with a curt 'Come' and in walked Lieutenant Adams. Talasario motioned for the man to sit and then he began. "No bones Lieutenant, I'll come straight to the point", he said, "you've requested a transfer twice now and been passed by. (Reply Adams) "We will rendezvous in just short of ten minutes, Captain T'Vhor had been notified, all you need to do is accept the transfer.... your call Lieutenant", said Talasario, knowing full well that the man was itching to distance himself from his cuirrent situation anyway. (Reply Adams) Talasario then clasped his hands upon the desk before him and looked the Lieutenant in the eye, then he spoke. "You don't like me much do you Lieutenant", he asked, "I sense it in you, you don't agree with my appointment and never have" (Reply Adams) "Of course, go aheead", said Talasario, after all, speaking freely was a dictate of Starfleet whatever the rank. (Reply Adams) "That's your opinion and your entitled to it, nevertheless, I'm sure that it was more than just intel hand over that put me in the centre chair again.... Starfleet are not in the habit of not recognizing the value of a man that has served on the line, whatever side that might happen to be", said the Captain. (Reply Adams) Talasario quirked his head and pursed his lips together. Then he continued on. "The war is over Lieutenant, it's time to get real and live with that", said Talasario, "So, what will it be?" (Reply Adams) "I thought as much, get your kit together and be prepared for disembark", said Talasario. "Your dismissed" (Reply Adams) Talasario watched as the man turned about and then headed towards the door, then after exhaling heavily, he called after him. "Good luck Lieutenant, I hope that you find your tour of duty on Spectre a little more rewarding than it was here", he said. (Reply Adams) (Posted by Alan) (USS Humboldt - Deck 1, Captain's Ready Room - Lt JG, Christopher Adams - 11:24) Lieutenant Christopher Adams walked into Captain Talasario's Ready Room. The captain sat at his desk drinking coffee and motioned for the lieutenant to take one of the empty seats in front of his desk. Adams ignored the gesture and stood at attention not focusing on the captain. "Lieutenant Adams reporting as ordered." "No bones, Lieutenant. I'll come straight to the point," Talasario stated. "You've requested a transfer twice now and been passed by. Well, now's your day. We are currently en route to the USS Spectre, which I might add is short of one Engineer", he added. "If you want her, she's yours." "Are you serious, sir?" asked Adams holding back his excitement. "To be frank. You've jerked me around before." "It's done n dusted," replied the captain. "All that's needed is your acceptance." Adams turned his head to look at Captain Talasario. "What can you tell me of this ship and her captain?" "I've had dealing with this vessel before," he explained. "CO is a hybrid Vulcan with all the expected connotations...In short, I don't envy you. The man will 'logic' you to the point of meltdown, but...He's a good man." "I can't believe..." started Adams. "We will rendezvous in just short of ten minutes," interrupted Talasario. "Captain T'Vhor had been notified. All you need to do is accept the transfer...Your call Lieutenant." The captain looked up at Adams he could see the tension on the lieutenant's face. There was more there that Adams was holding back. The captain clasped his hands on the desk in front of him and decided to pick it out of him. "You don't like me much do you Lieutenant? I sense it in you. You don't agree with my appointment and never have." "Permission to speak freely, sir?" asked Adams. "Of course," responded Talasario. "Go ahead." "I've known you for a long time, sir," said the lieutenant turning to look Captain Talasario in the eye. "I remember when you used to come to our ranch on Earth and eat dinner with my family. But, what you and my father did during the Civil War was inexcusable. Now, he sits in a Penal Colony for what he did. How is that fair? You don't deserve to be walking free much less in command of a starship." "That's your opinion and your entitled to it," stated the captain dryly. "Nevertheless, I'm sure that it was more than just intel hand over that put me in the centre chair again...Starfleet are not in the habit of not recognizing the value of a man that has served on the line. Whatever side that might happen to be." "A lot of good men and women died because of what you did," hissed Adams glaring down at the captain. Talasario tilted his head and pursed his lips at Adams's outburst. "The war is over Lieutenant, it's time to get real and live with that. So, what will it be?" Adams took a deep breath and let his anger subside. "I accept, sir." "I thought as much," responded Captain Talasario. "Get your kit together and be prepared for disembark. Your dismissed." "Aye, sir," responded Adams, who did an about-face and walked out of the room. "Good luck, Lieutenant," said the captain as Adams walked out the door. "I hope that you find your tour of duty on Spectre a little more rewarding than it was here." Adams ignored the captain's sentiments and the doors closed behind him. He leant one hand upon a nearby console and then let his head lilt slightly to one side as Williams awaited his response. H'Chir had half a mind to throw the medic out the nearest airlock, but then that probably wouldn't be the best thing to do given his current line of questioning, nor would it have been a particularly good guage for his sanity. Everyone that knew the Andorian knew that he had been through hell at the hands of the Romulans, they also knew that it had for a long time anyway, left him a little short of a normal compliment of marbles. He was ok now though and yet, it would seem that people were still on edge around him. "I'm not sure that I understand Doctor", said H'Chir gruffly, "this, this... preoccupied you speak of, and... now what was it... lack of focus you said whilst I set up the forcefield", he added. "Is the force field working? Did my 'apparent' preoccupation' with other matters prevent the task from being completed satisfactorilly? Is anyone dead from an error I made?", said H'Chir, his voice now escalating in decibels a little as he became increasingly more agitated. (Reply Williams) H'Chir's antennae flailed wildly on top of his head, then his brow furrowed up. "I resent where you are going Doctor, there is nothing wrong with my sanity, I was passed fit for duty by the requisite three shrinks and have not had a relapse since", said H'Chir as he began running computations on a nearby console in an attempt to distance himself from the evolving situation. "Furthermore... If humming a tune or singing a little ditty whilst I work makes me a candidate for the funny farm, then I suggest we build a bigger farm and lock up ninety percent of the Spectre crew as well", said H'Chir, "now, if you don't have anything else to say that might be construed as constructive, I have work to do.... He frowned as the transporter room informed him that there were going to be two transports from the Humboldt. He queried the transporter chief and found that as well as LT JG Christopher Adams for engineering there was also Lt Cmdr Calvin Capps coming aboard for tactical. ~Nice to have known~ A small smile crossed his face. It would be good to have Calvin back on board. He hoped that he was better since from what he had heard, Calvin had had a rough time lately. The turbolift doors opened and Calvin entered the bridge. He suppressed a grin as he saw Calvin quickly crossed the bridge and pushed the ready room, bell. A few seconds later the doors opened and Andrew watched as Calvin entered. He looked back at the quiet bridge and thought about what had happened the day before when every thing had been so tense. ~Okay do some work~ He tapped his comm badge. "No need to resort to formality right now Calvin, take a seat, tell me what has been happening in your life since your injuries cut your service short", said the Captain, obviously pleased to see his old friend again. (Reply Capps) The two officers had served together before of course under Captain Straton aboard the Paladin, and then again on Spectre for a brief time, those were good, though troubled times but they had seen them both forge a good friendship that went way beyond rank. "Can I get you something to drink?", he asked. Calvin had always found it unique that a Captain normally offers their guests in their ready room a drink. Most people refuse, and if it were any other Captain so would Calvin. But Calvin and T’Vhor were more than officers in Starfleet. They had been friends for a long time. “Yes, I would like a drink please. Do you remember friend?” Calvin sat patiently. Only a few seconds had passed and the Captain came back with two drinks. Calvin’s beverage was in the white tea cup on top of a small square plate. He took it from his friend’s hand. Sitting, he took a sip and smiled at T’Vhor reassuring him it was the correct drink. "So, your path has led you to Tactical Security now", said the Captain acknowledging Calvin’s gold uniform now. “Hmph,” Calvin gave a half laugh. He looked down at his collar which showed the gold color. “Yes, it did. I guess this shows that I would have done whatever it took to get out of that office.” "I'm sure that we will be able to keep you busy here... Lieutenant Donaldson will be your immediate department superior on board, but rest assured, your command abilities will not be forgotten", said T'Vhor. Calvin took another sip of the warm beverage, and noticed the conversation changed gears. “I am honored to be here on the Spectre and in Tactical Security. Lt Donaldson and I did not get a chance to get to know each other before my accident. I look forward working with him.” Calvin pondered on the Captains latter comments. “Thank you, I appreciate your trust in my capabilities in serving.” "Good command officers are hard to come by of late, your services might well be called upon at anytime Calvin", said the Captain. “The war took a hard toll on everyone. The command pool is not an exception to that.” Calvin thought back to the battles he served in. The dead officers can still be clearly seen in his memories. (reply T’Vhor, iyw) The Captain nodded and took a sip of his drink. "So, have you settled in yet at all?", said the Captain. “No. I had to come see you as soon as I got on board, and it is tradition to immediately report in to the commanding officer. It is something I have always done. I think it helps to show that I am putting forth initiative. I plan on reporting in to Lt Donaldson after this. I suspect that meeting won’t go like this one.” (reply T’Vhor, iyw) "Do you still play Calvin", he asked. He simply was trying to say that Donaldson and himself had not become friends in the past, and he didn't believe that thier meeting would be as relaxed as this one had been. It made no difference, so Calvin continued. Although he could talk to his friend far longer he knew that the Captain was busy. He didn't need to take too much of his time. "I am positive he will accept me with open arms," Calvin said. The Captain then allowed his mind to drift to the games they had both enjoyed whilst on the Paladin. It wasn't a Starfleet condoned practice but it was common among senior staff. Chuck could hear the voices of the collective counseling and medical staff in his mind. He was at this moment pouring over new Starfleet specifications for a modification to the Spectre's cloak technology. Chuck had been working closely with Lieutenant H'Chir to first verify that the change did come directly from Starfleet and then verifying that security protocols could be maintained during the transition. It was all looking hopeful when his office door chimed. "Come in." Chuck said keeping his nose in the pile of PADDs. A familiar face entered the open door. "Lt Cmdr Calvin Capps reporting as ordered sir," Calvin said in a cool and smooth voice. The Lt Cmdr then slightly bent over to hand the Security Chief the PADD with his orders on it. Chuck took the PADD and scanned through it quietly for a moment. "I'm supposed to give you a duty assignment, Lieutenant Commander." Chuck paused to gauge Calvin's response. I decided that it would be a perfect fit for me sir.” "I remember when you worked here under the Operations umbrella. What assignment would you like in the Security department?" Calvin had worked most of his Starfleet career in operations or command. Tactical Security would be new for him, but he was excited to be in a new field. It gave him a sense of adventure and exploration. He had not expected the latter question from the Lieutenant. He assumed he would have just been assigned somewhere, but Calvin thought maybe his new Chief wanted to just to get to know him a little better. “Sir, I am here equally for the Spectre and my benefit. I wished to be placed where I am needed most.” He didn’t have a pre-planned answer, and he didn’t really know what the Spectre’s needs were in this department. (reply Donaldson) (posted by Calvin) (USS Spectre - Deck 3, Transporter Room 1 - Lt JG, Christopher Adams - 12:04) Lieutenant Adams materialized on the transporter pad on his new ship assignment, the USS Spectre. He had gone straight from his confrontation with Captain Talasario to his quarters where he packed up all his personal items and got ready to disembark. He went down to engineering and told of his reassignment to Chief Engineer Commander Bradley. With a hand shake he had wished him good luck. Adams hadn't made many friends while on the Humboldt, so there weren't too many good-byes. The transporter chief looked up from the controls. "Welcome, aboard, Lieutenant." Adams reached down to his duffel bag and slug it over his shoulder. "Thank you," responded Adams with a smile. "Do you know where Captain T'Vhor is?" "I would assume he's up on the bridge," responded the transporter chief sarcastically. "Okay...thanks," responded Adams who walked out the doors. He looked left and then right before seeing a door marked turbolift. ~This new ship was going to take some getting used to,~ thought Adams. (reply T'Vhor, any) (posted by Jason French) (USS Spectre - Captain's Ready Room - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 12:13) The Captain had been busy routing through their most recent operational reports and some of the fleet updates that had arrived via Talasario's ship, they had been out on the fringes for some time now and as such, had been out of contact with most of the 52nd. The rivers current 'offline' status hadn't helped matters much at all either, no Federation vessel was even using it due to the discovery of the Borg infiltration, after all, the last thing they needed after a particularly bloody civil war was another foe homing in on them from afar. It was whilst contemplating this that the chime to his ready room sounded to herald what the Captain felt reasonably sure, was the newly arrived Lieutenant Adams from the Humboldt. "Come", said the Captain and the door slid aside to reveal said Engineer. The Captain stood briefly from his chair, extending a hand towards the newcomer as he did so to usher him in. "Please, take a seat Lieutenant" (Reply Adams) "Can I get you something to drink?", said the CO. (Reply Adams) NRPG: Assuming a no here, don't know why but I just feel that Adams might turn it down. We seem to have had more than our fair share of shuttle failures of late, due no doubt to fleet depletion after the civil war", he added. (Reply Adams) The Captain nodded in agreement and then changed the subject to that of the Humboldt in particular. "How is Captain Talasario these days?", asked the Captain. (Reply Adams) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Deck 1, Captain's Ready Room - Lieutenant JG Christopher Adams - 12:14) Lieutenant Christopher Adams stood outside the Captain's Ready Room having just pushed the panel which made the door chime. "Come," he heard a voice say from inside the room. The doors opened to reveal Captain T'Vhor raising up from his seat and motioning the lieutenant to enter the room. "Please, take a seat Lieutenant." Adams entered the room and set his duffel bag down next to a chair in front of the captain's desk and proceeded to sit down. "Thank you." "Can I get you something to drink?" asked the captain. "No thank you, sir," replied Adams. He looked down at his hands and noticed he was still holding the PADD which contained his orders. He held it out to his new captain. "Ah...here....Lieutenant Christopher Adams reporting for duty, sir." T'Vhor took the device from Adams read over it and started to pull up his service record on the console in front of him. "I see that you have extensive transportation experience", said the Captain approvingly, "I'm sure that Lieutenant H'Chir.... your immediate superior, will be glad of that. We seem to have had more than our fair share of shuttle failures of late, due no doubt to fleet depletion after the civil war", he added. "Yes," replied Adams. "Before joining Star Fleet, I worked at the City of Houston Transporter Facility, one of the largest next to San Francisco and New York, of coarse. During the war I also served as Chief of Operations on the USS Paladin. Unfortunately the ship didn't make it through the battle. I think she's still in mothball somewhere, just waiting to launch again." The captain nodded. ""How is Captain Talasario these days?" he asked. "His same arrogant self," replied Adams quickly without thinking. "Sorry. You see. The captain and I didn't see eye to eye all that much. While I was loyal to LoDona, my father was fighting for Doenitz. While my father and I didn't see eye to eye, I still think it's a travesty for people like Talasario to be walking free. I'm not saying that my father should be free either. I'm just saying that Talasario shouldn't be free much less in command of a starship." (reply T'Vhor) (posted by Jason French) (USS Spectre - Captain's Ready Room - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 12:15) The Lieutenant was right, Talasario WAS an arrogant man, he was probably a few other things besides, after all this was a man that had fought on the wrong side of the civil war and had still managed to retain a command, a mean feat by anyones book. Adams though had clearly not seen eye to eye with his ex CO and it showed not only in his face but also in the thoughts that he now radiated. The Captain simply nodded. "Captain Talasario is indeed a man that has, shall we say, ruffled a few feathers along his career path. However, command has seen fit, for whatever reason to allow him to serve in a command capacity", said the Captain, "it is not our place to judge this" (Reply Adams, IYW) "Were you aware that it was the Spectre that negotiated terms of ITD with the Alacrity?", asked the Captain. (Reply Adams) "Will there be any problems for you, serving onboard a ship that was active in bringing the Captain in I mean?", said the Captain, "you seem to be harbouring a good deal of resentment over the way 52nd fleet command has dealt with him" (Reply Adams) The Captain brought his hands together upon the table and then nodded at the Lieutenants obvious resolve, the Spectre might actually serve to become a constant reminder of the injustice that Adams perceived in regards Talasario and his father, and yet he still seemed eager to serve on the very ship that assisted the man in the first place. "I admire your commitment Lieutenant, I would remind you however that it is illogical to allow this experience to dwell in your mind and eat away at you", said the Captain. (Reply Adams, IYW) "We can only be responsible for the here and now, it is that which gives form and shape to the evolving future Lieutenant, not a negatively biased past", said the Captain. (Reply Adams) The Captain settled back into his chair. Clearly the angst felt by the new Engineer in regards the Humboldt's CO ran deep, and as a Human, Vulcan logic made very little difference to that. In past experience, T'Vhor knew that Humans had their own ways of dealing with things and it usually meant tension of some sort or another. This though was not the time, nor the place for such things so the Captain moved on, accessing the Lieutenants service record once more so as to assign him to their roster. "You are now signed on as an active Spectre crewman Lieutenant, quarters have been assigned to you on deck eight. You may report in with Lieutenant H'Chir whenever you wish, he will take you from there", said the Captain. (Reply Adams) "Very well", said the Captain reaching over the table to formally welcome the new Engineer to the ship with a handshake. "Welcome aboard the Spectre Lieutenant, I hope that your tour of duty with us is both rewarding and informative", he added before dismissing the Lieutenant and then returning to the matter of the fleet reports once more. (Reply Adams) (Posted by Alan) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix One Four, Level Four Primary Computer Core - ACEO Ensign Peter Talbot - 12:15) About a half an hour after his report to Cmdr. Williams, Peter was exhausted and having trouble focusing. He decided to use the rest of the stimulant he had taken from the Spectre. He grabbed the hypospray and injected the substance. The stimulant drug proved less effective this time but it did help Peter to refocus his attention. Hopefully it would last until the Borg download was complete and he could return to the Spectre and get some sleep. ~Just a few more hours to go~ Talbot thought to himself. (reply none, any) (posted by Jonathon Alber) (USS Spectre - Deck 1, Captain's Ready Room - Lieutenant JG Christopher Adams - 12:16) Lieutenant Christopher Adams sat in the Captain's Ready Room talking about his time on the Humboldt to his new captain, T'Vhor. "Captain Talasario is indeed a man that has, shall we say, ruffled a few feathers along his career path," explained the captain. "However, command has seen fit, for whatever reason to allow him to serve in a command capacity. It is not our place to judge this." "Understood," replied Adams. "I think it's exceptionally close to me because I knew Captain Talasario while I was growing up before even joining Star Fleet. He and my father did a lot of bad things during the War. A lot of my friends that I graduated with died because of their actions." "Were you aware that it was the Spectre that negotiated terms of ITD with the Alacrity?", asked the Captain. "No," replied Adams. "I didn't..." "Will there be any problems for you, serving onboard a ship that was active in bringing the Captain in I mean?" asked T'Vhor. "You seem to be harbouring a good deal of resentment over the way 52nd fleet command has dealt with him." "No, sir." replied the lieutenant. "I pledge myself to you and this ship as I did with Captain Straton and the Paladin before." "I admire your commitment Lieutenant," responded T'Vhor. "I would remind you however that it is illogical to allow this experience to dwell in your mind and eat away at you. We can only be responsible for the here and now, it is that which gives form and shape to the evolving future Lieutenant, not a negatively biased past." "I will, sir," agreed Adams. "I see this as a fresh start, a re-birth into Star Fleet. After leaving to take care of my mother, I was itching to get back into the stars and just explore. The War took us away from what the Federation was founded for. As Dr. Cochrane said we are here to 'boldly go where no man has gone before' and I feel this is finally the first time I can put the War behind me and strike out across the stars." Captain T'Vhor leaned back in his chair. "You are now signed on as an active Spectre crewman Lieutenant, quarters have been assigned to you on deck eight. You may report in with Lieutenant H'Chir whenever you wish, he will take you from there", said the Captain. "Thank you, sir," replied Adams. "I won't let you down." "Very well", said the Captain. He reached across the table and Adams met him in a firm handshake. "Welcome aboard the Spectre Lieutenant, I hope that your tour of duty with us is both rewarding and informative" "Yes, sir," said the lieutenant who picked up his duffel bag and walked out of the room filled with renewed confidence in his assignment. (reply none) (posted by Jason French) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix One Four, Level Four Primary Computer Core - Doctor Samantha Gunnell - 12:17) Gunnell stopped in her tracks the moment she and her Marine escort had entered into the computer room, what she saw was not something that she particularly agreed with at all though and her resultant response was far from calculated. Ensign Talbot was currently seated upon the floor, cross legged and still monitoring the data flow as it neared completion, in his hand however he held what was clearly a hypospray which he had obviously just used upon himself. Samantha furrowed her brow and pursed her lips, then she made her presense known to the exhausted looking Engineer. "Ensign Talbot!", she cracked, "please don't tell me you have been using stimulants to continue with this task" (Reply Talbot) "Are you even aware of the effects of prolonged stimulant use and it's effects on your central nervous system?", said Gunnell, "this is sensitive data Ensign, requiring sensitive handling... just one moment of distraction could have proved catastrophic to both the Spectre and indeed, her entire crew. What on earth were you thinking man", she added, snatching the hypospray from the mans hand and then moving to check the data herself, which thankfully appeared to be stable still. (Reply Talbot) "You should have called for assistance, had I known you were using this...", said Gunnell holding up the hypospray in her hand, "...then I would have never left you here by yourself" (Reply Talbot) Samantha shook her head and then exhaled heavily. She felt for the man, honestly she did, he was clearly just trying to get the job done with the minimum of fuss but in the process, had been slightly irresponsible. It was just as well that things were still ok. "I suggest that you beam back to the Spectre and get some sleep before your body implodes", said Gunnell. (Reply Talbot) Gunnell shook her head. "No, it's fine. I can handle things from here, the data upload is almost completed anyway", said Samantha before returning her attention to the consoles whilst Talbot packed up his gear and tapped at his combadge to request beamout, a somewhat sheepish expression etched upon his face as he did so. (Reply Talbot, Any) (Posted by Alan) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix One Four, Level Four Primary Computer Core - ACEO Ensign Peter Talbot - 12:18) Peter heard voices approaching as he stood up Doctor Gunnell and her marine escort entered the room. Still holding the hypospray in his hand Gunnell stared at him and began her lecture. "Ensign Talbot!," the Doctor's voice cracked as she spoke, "please don't tell me you have been using stimulants to continue with this task." Talbot answered feeling much more awake whilst being accused of wrong doing, "Dr. Gunnell I assure you the data integrity has not been compromised by my actions. I am a more than competent engineer even half asleep. Furthermore before this away mission I was cleared to use a stimulant." "Are you even aware of the effects of prolonged stimulant use and it's effects on your central nervous system?", said Gunnell, "this is sensitive data Ensign, requiring sensitive handling... just one moment of distraction could have proved catastrophic to both the Spectre and indeed, her entire crew. What on earth were you thinking man." Talbot now becoming agitated at the Doctor's claims replied more forcefully, "You are not a physician Doctor Gunnell and take I offense to your accusations. I am not a drug addict if that is what you are implying, that hypospray only contained one dose of a mild stimulant designed to promote alertness. And as I already indicated the data transfer is intact." "You should have called for assistance, had I known you were using this...", said Gunnell holding up the hypospray in her hand, "...then I would have never left you here by yourself." Talbot calmed his tone and spoke very clearly and calmly to help persuade Gunnell that the incident was not an issue to be concerned with. "Doctor, I have been on duty for 32 hours, sacrificing to make this mission a success its only a mild stimulant and I am fine," Peter said. Talbot could see that Doctor Gunnell was recovering from her initial shock she felt upon entering the room and now was somewhat concerned for Peter's well being. "I suggest that you beam back to the Spectre and get some sleep before your body implodes", said Gunnell. "Not a bad idea Doctor," Peter replied, "Will you be needing any assistance finishing up here?," he asked. Shaking her head she replied, "No, it's fine. I can handle things from here, the data upload is almost completed anyway." Peter gathered his equipment and stood tall in the middle of the room then he tapped his combadge. "Ensign Talbot to Transporter Room, one to beam out," Talbot said. While waiting for transport Peter thought about how he wanted to finish his first away mission and about how this current incident with Dr. Gunnell might affect his career in Starfleet. A moment later the blueish glow of the transporter beam engulfed Peter, taking him back to the Spectre. (reply none, any) (posted by Jonathon Alber) (USS Spectre - Crew Quarters - Talbot's Quarters - ACEO Ensign Peter Talbot - 12:31) Peter exited the Turbo lift and walked to his quarters. When he arrived at his door he realized the security seal was still in place. Peter had nearly forgotten yesterday's robbery and the ransacking of his quarters. Peter took a moment to recall the room number of the temporary quarters Lt. Ammon Ranae had assigned him. ~Right, 114 just down the corridor,~ Peter remembered now. He made his way to his temporary quarters thinking along the way, ~I wonder how long, before I can return to my old room. That can wait I need to sleep.~ Peter entered his room, locked his door, set an alarm for 0400 hours and immediately went to bed. Sleep came easily to the exhausted Ensign. (reply none, any) (posted by Jonathon Alber) (USS Spectre - Deck 8 - Lieutenant JG, Christopher Adams - 12:31) The doors to the turbolift opened up to reveal a long corridor which slightly curved to the left. There were several doors on either side. ~He said deck eight,~ thought Adams craning his neck to see if he was in the right place. He finally decided to exit the turbolift and walk towards one of the side panels along the corridor. Placing his hand on the surface made it light up and several beeps acknowledged it was ready for a command. "Computer," stated Adams to the wall. "Locate the quarters of Lieutenant Christopher Adams." [The quarters of Lieutenant Christopher Adams is located on Deck 8, Section 2,] replied to computer. [Follow the indicator to your destination.] The side panel started to flash around the curve in the corridor. Adams removed his hand and started to follow the flashing lights leading his way to his new quarters. [Your destination is the first door on your right,] said the computer. Adams looked at the door and his name was already printed on the door. ~The crew seems very efficient,~ thought Adams. ~I only first knew about this transfer a couple of hours ago.~ As he moved forward, the doors opened to reveal his new room. As he entered, there was a desk with a chair along the wall to his left. A console interface sat on the desk along with a couple of spare PADDs for his use. Near the desk were a series of book shelves and a replicator interface. To his right was a standard sized bed and a lounge seat. There was also an open portal, which he figured led to the head and the sonic shower. ~Not too bad,~ thought Adams. ~About the same size as the one on the Humboldt, but no where near the same as the one I had on the Paladin, but, of course, everything was bigger on the Paladin.~ Adams looked out one of the the two long narrow windows that was over his bed. It appeared that he had a forward-starboard view and right now it currently was staring straight at the mechanical surface of a Borg cube. The reminder of their mission snapped back into reality. ~I really should unpack and report to Lieutenant H'Chir as soon as possible,~ thought Adams. He opened up his duffel bag and removed a couple of pictures, one of his mother, and another one of some friends that he had had back at the Academy. He smiled down at them as he placed them on his new desk. Next he retrieved an American football, oval in shape, brown with white laces. He tossed it onto his bed. He placed his hand in the bag again and pulled out a few books: Technical Guide to Ships of the Fleet, 2403 Edition; Power System Theory of the Modern Starfleet Vessel; and a novel called Anslem, and placed them on the shelf near his desk. Finally, he retrieved an isolinear chip from his bag. He insert the chip into the replicator and created extra uniforms and other miscellaneous articles clothing, which he stored in a couple of the drawers in his quarters. Finally, he placed the duffel bag into the replicator and it disappeared with the press of a button. Without much time to actually settle in, Adams figured it was time to meet the chief engineer and get started with his duties. He had one more look over his quarters and then turned around and headed towards the turbolift that was at the end of the hall. (reply none) (posted by Jason French) (USS Spectre - Deck 13, Main Engineering - Lieutenant JG, Christopher Adams - 12:46) The turbolift doors opened up to a hallway bustling with activity. Maintenance crews walked to and fro caring equipment needed for various repairs around the ship. Lieutenant Christopher Adams walked out of the turbolift and through the double doors which lead to main engineering deck. There were about a half dozen crew members working at the consoles that lined either side of the main hallway. At the end of the hallway was the matter/anti-matter chamber. It continued it's normal pulsing rhythm, slow and steady. Standing in the shadow of the warp core, there stood an Andorian, the chief engineer of the USS Spectre, Lieutenant H'chir. It appeared to Adams that he wasn't having a good day. Adams approached the lieutenant. "Sir? Lieutenant Christopher Adams. Just transferred to your command from the USS Humboldt."
