Then there was a moment of anticipation as the words "Everything looks ready... fire the pulse." Came from the front of the cockpit. Kurt paused to glance over his shoulder at the gold-clad Klingon. He shrugged nonchalantly as if he was queuing his lunch from the replicator. The moment was seemingly anticlimactic despite all of their hard work; a small chirp from the computer signaled the pulse had been initiated. Then another moment of silence fell over the shuttle crew. (Reply, none) ((Post by Cody)) (Shuttlecraft Shade - Cockpit – CMO, Cmdr Andrew Williams - 13:52) He watched as Kerge and his team head over to the transporter pad. "Alright, Lieutenant, are you ready?" "Ready when you are" came Kerge’s reply "Alright, beginning transport now." Said Alexander "Alright then, are we ready?" "Ready to go, sir. Let's do this." Andrew gave a flash of a smile at what Sorenson had said as they went over to the transport pad. As he stepped onto the pad he took a breath calmed himself and nodded to Alexander. "See you on the other side." ~For what we are about to receive~ "Energize." With that the shuttlecraft disappeared. (Reply any) (Posted by Robbie) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 21, Storage Hold – Security Officer, Haringey - 14:03) Haringey looked around as the team materialised. HE pulled out his phaser and scanned the room as Kerge signalled the Shade to inform Alexander and the rest that they had arrived safely. He noticed that Lenson had activating his tricorder and beginning to scanning. He saw Kerge halted at the door to the storage room. "It's all clear sir" ~Well that’s a relief~ "Nothing moving within a 500 metre radius" Kerge ventured forth as he opened the door with Kirrien, Lenson following and Haringey taking up the rear. He paused as Kerge inspected a wall schematic "OK, let's move on" "We are currently on Deck 21, here" "This is our destination, Deck 4, Operations. Hopefully, the corridors will remain as free of interference as they are right now” He nodded and then to point moving forwards through the corridor towards the awaiting turbolifts. He had his phaser up in front of him scanning the corridor as he went making sure there was nothing unexpected up ahead. He came across a collapsed crewman who looked to be from medical. He glanced down at the crewman and then passed pushing forward a few feet as Kirrien knelt and scan the downed crewman. "Well, this one is not infected" He gave a soft sigh of relief carried onto explain that the crewman was just unconscious rather than infected. They pushed on to the turbolift section where they found the wall annunciators were flashing yellow. ~Ow hell the station is on Yellow Alert~ He moved to one side and scanned the room as well as the corridors leading off it. ~This is going to get nasty quickly~ “Boss! We taking the stairs?” (Reply Kerge) (Reply Kerge, any) (Posted by Robbie) (Shuttlecraft cockpit - CSO, LT.jg Kurt Palmer – 14:05) The silence was broken as more orders from the front of the ship snapped Kurt's head back to his console. "Alright, it is time to go to work. Lt. Kerge, I will send your team over First. Ensign Sorensen, Commander Williams, and Lt. Palmer, we will beam over next." In mere seconds the first team assembled. "See you on the other side." The ops officer said from his console. Kurt kept his head down, as he finalized his console before he had to leave the shuttle. Blue light reflected off of his controls, followed by the all too familiar hum of the transporter. Kurt keyed in the last few controls, locking down his console and activating a continuous scan. It was a precaution- but, just in case the need arose. The science chief swiveled around to assemble with the rest of his team. As he tossed his phaser rifle over his shoulder he couldn't help but feel an uneasy lump in his throat. His time at the academy did not include advanced tactical training, and the idea of toting a weapon was not his idea of a dream mission. He swallowed as he stood. However, he didn't join Starfleet to become a science officer either and his medical training didn't prepare him for most of the duties he had inherited on the Spectre. With a breath same blue light passed over him, as he transported into another unexpected experience. (Reply, none) ((Post by Cody)) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14, Corridor B - Ensign Michael Sorenson - 14:06) The transporter had deposited them on the station correctly. Once the transporter had dissipated, Michael swung his body round, weapon held infront of him. He saw noone, which did nothing to ease his concern. Ensign Alexander looked preoccupied with his thoughts so Michael took the time to peek round the nearby corner. ~The station is on yellow alert, but noone is rushing up, guns drawn~ Michael walked back. Will looked round at the away team. "Alright guys, everyone make it over in one piece?" He asked. Michael nodded. "All limbs accounted for sir. Also, the pulse seems to have worked according to plan. The immediate area is clear." He looked over at one of the flashing alert screens. "Should the yellow alert have been triggered by the pulse, sir?" (Reply Alexander) (Reply Alexander, Any) (Posted by Brandon) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14, Corridor B – CMO, Cmdr Andrew Williams - 14:07) Andrew opened his eyes as he felt the grip of the transporter release him. He gave a quiet sigh as he looked around. He could handle the quiet loneliness of EVA. He even would have been happy to have space walked from the shuttle to the station which was a very risky procedure but scramble his body and putting is back together again still made him uneasy. He looked over at Alexander as he spoke "Alright guys, everyone make it over in one piece?" "All limbs accounted for sir. Also, the pulse seems to have worked according to plan. The immediate area is clear." He gave a smile and was about to reply when Sorenson as he looked over at one of the flashing alert screens. "Should the yellow alert have been triggered by the pulse, sir?" ~I really hope not as it has taken away our stealth~ “I guess we should head off in case someone comes to investigate the transportation.” (Reply Palmer, Sorensen, Alexander) (Reply Palmer, Sorensen, Alexander, any) (Posted by Robbie) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14, Corridor B - TAC/ASC, Ensign Michael Sorenson - 14:08) "I guess we should head off incase someone comes to investigate the transportation." That reply came from the chief medical officer. Michael looked back at the man. He was glad to have this particular company with him. It is always helpful to have an experienced medical officer on an away mission. ~It's also useful if the effects of the pulse have been underestimated.~ Michael mentally shook his head. Now was not the time to be feeling paranoid about having semi-lucid crewmen chasing after them. Although from the little amount he had heard about the reason for there mission, he wouldn't be suprised if that became a reality. Michael grimaced. This was the problem with being transferred to a new ship in the midst of a mission. You often had to skip the introductions and how-do-you-dos to get straight into the action. He hoped to have a conversation with the doctor when they had some time to spare. Putting his musings aside, Michael realised he had been staring at the unconcious crewmember on the floor for about 15 seconds. He looked over to Ensign Alexander. "I'll keep an eye on the rear, sir." ~At least I'll be able to give warning if something comes from behind~ NRPG: Just a little foray into Michael's paranoid mind. Thought I'd try a post like this. (Reply none) (Posted by Brandon) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14, Corridor B - CSO LT.jg Kurt Palmer – 14:09) Starbase 39 came into focus around him. The closest readout indicated the station was on alert. Without hesitation Kurt drew his tricorder. "Should the yellow alert have been triggered by the pulse, sir?" Their security counterpart asked “I guess we should head off in case someone comes to investigate the transportation.” Came the doctor's voice without a beat. The security officer assembled "I'll keep an eye on the rear, sir." Then the mission lead replied, getting the ball rolling. "Right, let's get moving... there should be a jeffrey's tube about 200 meters down the hall. We can take that easily to Deck 12, should leave us about 150 meters from the COMM center." Kurt nodded as he watched the Ensign survey the situation. "The yellow alert would probably predate the pulse, meaning this station was on alert before we got on board. I think. We should be careful. We don't know what we might encounter." Kurt checked his tricorder as the team chatted back and forth. Then "Lieutenant Palmer," came Ensign Alexander's voice "you ready to move out?" "Yes." He closed his tricorder to ready his phaser rifle. " I'm not picking up any activity in the immediate vicinity." "Alright guys, lets go." Alexander spoke as they formed up. Kurt followed behind, tricorder in one hand and phaser in the other. He couldn't help but think this wasn't the result he expected when he volunteered an idea in their mission briefing. He chuckled and looked to the doctor. "Maybe I'll keep my mouth closed next time the Captain asks for suggestions at a briefing." (Reply, Williams, any) ((Post by Cody)) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14, Corridor B - Ops, Ensign Will Alexander - 14:10) Will looked around at his away team. He shouldn't have been the one leading the charge, he was an ensign, 3rd in order of rank from Commander Williams to Ensign Sorensen. Lt. Palmer was the Second Officer, by all rights the mission should have been his. But by circumstance, he ended up sort of taking charge, and no one called him on it, so he just kept going. His Academy write up did say he was a natural leader. Which made sense, the real him, the original him, or whatever you could call him, which Will was still trying to figure that out, did rise up the ranks fast, and was now a captain. Will on the other hand, was just content to be alive, and didn't need to ascend the ranks as fast as his counterpart did. He spent a lot of time reading the fate of Thomas Riker, a transporter duplicate of former Enterprise First Officer William Riker. He didn't want to go down that path, let jealously take over. His case was also different. He wasn't a duplicate of the whole person, that lived isolated for years. He was the remnants of the thoughts, personality, memories, of the real deal, having been implanted in another body. Taking over. Biologically he was still William Frost. Mentally, he was not. It would have potentially been easier if he had been a full body duplicate. He missed his face. Still he had to keep his head on a swivel. He wanted to come back from this one alive. "Should the yellow alert have been triggered by the pulse, sir?" asked the young security Officer. Before he could say anything the CMO chimed in. “I guess we should head off in case someone comes to investigate the transportation.” Sorensen then looked straight at Will. "I'll keep an eye on the rear, sir." "Right, let's get moving. The Communication hub is not to far, its two decks above. Schematics say there should be a jeffrey's tube about 200 meters down the hall. We can take that easily to Deck 12, should leave us about 150 meters from the COMM center." Will paused. "The yellow alert would probably predate the pulse, meaning this station was on alert before we got on board. I think. We should be careful. We don't know what we might encounter. Ensign Sorensen, take the rear, I'll go out in front." (Reply Sorensen) "Doc, you have a medkit right? I think if we run in to someone, we might try and wake them up, figure out what is going on." (Reply Williams) "Lieutenant Palmer, you ready to move out?" (Reply Palmer) "Alright guys, lets go." And with that, Will started heading down the hall, phaser rifle in hand, hoping he was ready for what was in store. (Reply Palmer, Williams, Sorensens) (posted by Will Banowsky) (Starbase 39-Sierra – Deck 14, Corridor B – TAC/ASC, Ensign Michael Sorenson – 14:12) The team was prepping to move out. Everyone was accounted for; the transporter trip had gone off without a hitch. Ensign Alexander was surveying the situation. "Right, let's get moving.” He said. “The Communication hub is not to far, its two decks above. Schematics say there should be a jeffrey's tube about 200 meters down the hall. We can take that easily to Deck 12, should leave us about 150 meters from the COMM center." Will paused, then answered Michael’s earlier question. "The yellow alert would probably predate the pulse, meaning this station was on alert before we got on board. I think. We should be careful. We don't know what we might encounter. Ensign Sorensen, take the rear, I'll go out in front." Michael nodded. “Aye, sir.” He back peddled to the rear of the group, periodically casting his gaze behind. Ensign Alexander was saying something about a medkit. He hoped to wake up someone and ask them about the situation. ~So long as they remain calm, that’s fine by me.~ After talking with Lieutenant Palmer, Will brought his rifle up. “Alright guys, let’s go.” He said, as he began walking down the hall. (Reply none) (Posted by Brandon) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14 - Corridor B – CMO, Cmdr Andrew Williams - 14:13) "Doc, you have a medkit right? I think if we run in to someone, we might try and wake them up, figure out what is going on." Andrew nodded and patted his medkit that he had slung over his shoulder. “Yes Will I have one but I would urge on the side of caution about who we wake up.” ~Don’t want to get it wrong and put the station on lock down~ He checked his surrounding counting off mentally where the away team was in the group so that he would know where each one was in case there was an emergency "Alright guys, lets go." ~Off we go~ Alexander headed off down the hall as Andrew slid into his place in the group with his phaser out and ready. Andrew looked over at Palmer as he gave a chuckle. "Maybe I'll keep my mouth closed next time the Captain asks for suggestions at a briefing." Andrew smiled. “Well Kurt we both know that is so not going to happen now don’t we” (Reply Palmer IYW) (Reply, Palmer, any) (Posted by Robbie) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 17 – TAC/SC, Lt Kerge and MRA, Lt Michaella Kirien - 14:13) Lenson activated his tricorder, and then nodded. Someone was in the room, and they were conscious... That did not sound good, and the nod of acknowledgement immediately put everyone's hackles up, and Kerge was not in the frame of mind to be getting jumped by a bug. For a brief moment, he contemplated a wide scale blast from a phasor on stun setting, but right now, he needed to know what they were dealing with, and perhaps a cognitive, awake person might provide them with a little insight. Moving into the room, the Klingon paused, looking into all areas of the room and then listening intently for any sounds that might give away their prey. What they did not want to be hearing would be the sound of crawling, or slithering. Indeed anything that might indicate something decidedly unwanted. What he did hear though, surprised him. Sobbing.... Moving further into the room and heading now towards the source of the apparent distress, Kerge moved quickly and stealthily, his footfalls hardly registering despite his considerable size. Then he saw movement again, his right arm tensing as he re-aimed his phasor towards the target. Then he paused, raising his arm upwards, the phasor coming to rest near to his shoulder as he spotted her... A child. Perhaps about 12 years of age, Ferengi by it's appearance and cowering like a whimpering Dog in the corner of the room behind a table. Kerge moved closer, stopping slightly and extending his hand towards the female. "It's OK", he said, "we aren't here to hurt you" The Ferengi child cowered lower, and then glanced about the room at the others that had by now assembled in the room with the big Klingon, her eyes falling upon Kirien and softening slightly. Perhaps it was the fact that she was female, or maybe that she wore the uniform of a carer as opposed to one who was more akin to fire fights and aggression. Kerge continued, but was immediately halted by Kirien, who moved forwards also and dropped to her haunches before the girl, her tricorder already running scans. "You can trust us", she said, "we aren't infected. We are here to help", she added, hoping that perhaps the child would surely be aware of the fact that some of the stations crew were likely to have become infected by the parasitic organism. Then she glanced to Kerge, who remained ready, just in case. "She isn't infested by the 'bug', as you call it", said Kirien. "She's just frightened, and probably with good reason too", she added, extending her hand towards the child, who still seemed hesitant, but nonetheless reached out to her too. Finally, progress.... NRPG: Anyone feel up to the task of playing a sensitive and frightened Ferengi child? RPG: (Reply, Any) (Posted by Alan) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 17 – Gral - 14:14) She had lost all track of time. She didn't know how long he had been hiding. Just that she had been hiding. Her family had only come to the station two weeks ago. Her father wanted to sell some merchandise, get latinum. All the things a Ferengi should do. Well and smuggle some contraband, especially Romulan Ale. All things a Ferengi Should do. That of course landed her father in the brig. Nothing unsual. Hewmans were a bit, unreasonable. Still the hewmans here were a little odd. They acted strangely. It had Gral on edge. Then things went bad. And she hid, Gral hid, she escaped the security officers watching her and hid. She then remembered some sort of thing knocking some hewmans out. Gral was uneffected, maybe it was her superior Ferengi ears, or maybe she was lucky. Still she found a room to hide in, and began to cry. Her father and uncle had been locked up somewhere, and she hadn't seen them in two weeks. Here she was, scared. There were things going on she didn't understand, and it scared her. Would she ever see Ferenginar again. Would she be taken over by the thing. The thing, they showed her footage of her father and uncle being given to those things, they fought struggled, and then they killed them, her father and uncle. They had been tortured for two weeks, the thing rejected them, to damaged, so they murdered her family. Just when she thought things couldn't get wore, there he was a giant Klingon. ~Oh know, they've come for me, I'm going to be locked up, or killed. "It's OK", he said, "we aren't here to hurt you" the Klingon said. Lies, more lies. She had been lied to all week. She was promised good food, and was served disgusting rations. Promised a good place to stay while her father was in the brig, a small room with an uncofortable bed. A babysitter to watch her, turned out to be a security detail. She could also swear she heard her father's cries at night. She could swear they were hurting him. Maybe she was being paranoid. Gral then saw the female. It mader her feel at easy. She didn't wear the yellow of the brutes. Plus she seemed nice and not scary. "You can trust us", she said, "we aren't infected. We are here to help" Gral nodded. The thing, the it, they tried to put in her family. "She isn't infested by the 'bug', as you call it", said Kirien. "She's just frightened, and probably with good reason too", she added, extending her hand towards Gral. Hesitantly she reached out her hand. "Who are you, are you with them. They killed my father. They killed my father. Hewman scum. The things, the things, what are they?", said the Ferengi girl, firing off so many questions at once now. It was to be expected of course, the fear still showing in her eyes as she slowly eased herself from her hiding place. Kirien responded accordingly, her natural ability to calm others showing itself as she moved the girl to the nearby seating and then sat her down. "We can talk about that later. The important thing is, is that you are safe now and we will do our best to ensure that you stay safe", said Michaella. Kerge furrowed his brow at that. They most definitely were not safe, not on this station with parasitic bugs in hiding anyway. It was clear though that Kirien knew what was best to tell the girl, as the last thing they needed right now was to add to her already heightened state of nervousness. Kerge, said nothing... "What can you tell us about the things?", asked Kirien. "Have you seen them up close?" (Reply Gral) "And do you know how they got on the station. Who tried to introduce them to your Father?", she asked. (Reply Gral) Kerge listened intently as Kirien gently quizzed the Ferengi child. Any intel on this species was of the utmost importance now, but it concerned him slightly that the girl herself had not been incapacitated by Alexander's disabling pulse. Perhaps that might have something to do with the four lobed brain of a Ferengi, after all they could rarely be read by telepath's so perhaps, that same four lobed brain was also immune to Alexander's beam, which raised another concern in his own Security orientated one. The station might possibly have had Ferengi crew aboard. If any of those had been infected, then they were probably still.... It did not bear thinking about, but Kerge immediately moved away from Kirien and the child to signal Alexander's team on the modified communicators they had brought with them. "Kerge to Alexander. Please respond"... (Reply Alexander) "Ensign, a development of sorts", began Kerge, "it would seem that the Ferengi might be immune to your pulse, which would mean that any infected Ferengi crew aboard might still be active and wide awake. Something to bear in mind as you and your team make their way through the station", he added. (Reply Alexander) Kerge nodded, and then closed the communication down, just in case someone might be listening in regardless of their modified communicators... "And do you know how they got on the station. Who tried to introduce them to your Father?", she asked. "I don't know how they got here." She then sobbed more. "Your people introduced it. Starfleet. They were wearing red and yellow. Hewmans. Scary looking. The two in the room. One had three circles, the other two. The one in red, he was tall, gray hair, and had a beard. The one in yellow was a female hewman. Starfleet did this. Starfleet killed my father.!" The Klingon broke off to talk to someone on the intercom. "Who is Alexander. Is he bad. Why do you hate ferengi. Did you just tell your man to hunt Ferengi? You are one of them aren't you the bad men. Klingons are just like hewmans, only meaner and stupider!" They were about 50 metres from the jeffery’s tube. It seemed as though they had unanimously decided that a slower advance was better, what with the eerie silence and constant pulsing of the yellow alert. Michael remained on guard however. Even in what seems like a simple situation, it only takes a small slip of concentration to fail the mission. The team had yet to pass another body, something that kept Michael on edge. Surely in a starbase this size you’d see at least one person? As he thought of this, something caught his eye in an empty room the team had just passed. Michael knelt down. “Sir!” He called out. “You should take a look at this.” (Reply Alexander) Once the team had backtracked to his location he pointed out the object. “Discarded phaser, Sir.” Michael looked round for the owner. “No one seems to be around to claim it, but it was definitely fired.” He pointed at the opposite wall with this statement, where two burn marks were visible, similar to those caused by a phaser that missed its target. T'Vhor, working covertly with Admiral Alexander many months beforehand, had been convinced that Starfleet itself had been utterly compromised, the Chief himself being one of the few that had been made privy to this information. And now the child was all but confirming it. "The two in the room. One had three circles, the other two. The one in red, he was tall, grey hair, and had a beard. The one in yellow was a female hew-man. Starfleet did this. Starfleet killed my father!", she exclaimed, obviously still very frightened by what she had seen and very clearly not entirely trusting of the newcomers. ~These are command officers~ Thought Kerge, thinking back now to the report he had been shown by the Captain... Kirien did her best to calm the Ferengi girl of course, but she was clearly upset by the Starfleet uniforms they all wore. Then, after Kerge had alerted Alexander's team to look out for any Ferengi, she became even more hostile. "Who is Alexander. Is he bad. Why do you hate ferengi?", she cried, directing her unrestrained anger now at the Klingon. "Did you just tell your man to hunt Ferengi? You are one of them aren't you the bad men. Klingon's are just like hew-mans, only meaner and stupider!..... You want kill me like you killed my father!" It was preposterous, and Kerge was beginning to lose his temper now turning to the child with a forceful tone to his voice. "We are here to help you, not kill you child", he exclaimed, causing the girl to cower... Kirien then stepped in again. "Lieutenant, you're frightening her", she said, concerned for the girl now. Kerge waved his hand in the air in dismissal and turned away. "The girl will not listen, she has already made up her mind that we are all here to destroy", he said, then suddenly he returned to her to emphasise his next sentence. "But you are wrong, child. If you wish to remain here, alone, then you may do so", he added. "But we have work to do" Gral turned to Kirien, the notion of remaining there alone obviously not one that she was considering or particularly relishing. Kirien put an arm around her shoulder in an attempt to ease her tension, then she turned to Kerge "The girl is coming with us", she said. "We are not leaving her, not like this" Kerge exhaled heavily, his Klingon patience already frayed. The child was going to be hindrance, he felt it in his blood. But at the same time he realised that she was the only one in the room right now that had actually seen the perpetrators of whatever had occurred here. "Fine", he said, "have it your way" And then they moved cautiously out into the corridor... (Reply Gral, Any, IYW) (Posted by Alan) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14, Corridor B - CSO LT.jg Kurt Palmer – 14:21) They made their way down the corridor, and just steps from the jeffries tube they were halted by Ensign Sorenson, their security caboose, calling out. "Sir! You should take a look at this.” (Reply Alexander) The group turned to see what the fuss was “Discarded phaser, Sir.” The Ensign pointed out “No one seems to be around to claim it, but it was definitely fired.” He added pointing to burns on the opposite bulkhead. (Reply Alexander) Kurt crouched down to examine further. He slung his phaser rifle back over his shoulder to free up both hands for his tricorder. "My readings indicate it was probably fired within the last hour." Kurt pivoted on his toes to scan the vicinity before pointing to the ground about a foot away from the discarded weapon. "Signs of a struggle perhaps?" (Reply, any) He shifted closer making out stains on the ground. "looks like residual DNA..." Kurt swallowed and looked up at the rest of the team. "Hopefully we've knocked out whoever was involved here." (Reply, any) Kurt stood. "My scan radius is limited, I think the pulse may have interacted with the ODN, and produced some interference." He looked up from his tricorder. "Once we get up to the comm center I may be able to use the station computers to check that everyone is knocked out." (Reply, any) ((Post by Cody)) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14, Corridor B - Ops, Ensign Will Alexander - 14:22) “Sir!” He called out. “You should take a look at this.” Will hurried to where the security officer was kneeling. Whatever it was, it didn't bode well. "Sorensen, what seems to be the trouble?" Will asked. His phaser rifle firmly gripped in his hands. “Discarded phaser, Sir. No one seems to be around to claim it, but it was definitely fired.” Sorensen pointed at the opposite wall with this statement, where two burn marks were visible, similar to those caused by a phaser that missed its target. "Well take this as evidence that this yellow alert predates our arrival. Still we need to keep our heads on a swivel. Whoever left these could be close." Will replied. "My readings indicate it was probably fired within the last hour." The science officer pivoted on his toes to scan the vicinity before pointing to the ground about a foot away from the discarded weapon. "Signs of a struggle perhaps?" "That seems likely, especially with the angle the two shots were fired. Whatever happened on the station, predated our arrival. Which makes sense. Are approach was too easy. Way too easy. Anything else?" Will asked. He was getting nervous. Palmer shifted closer making out stains on the ground. "looks like residual DNA.. Hopefully we've knocked out whoever was involved here." "Can you scan for any life signs up ahead.?" "My scan radius is limited, I think the pulse may have interacted with the ODN, and produced some interference. Once we get up to the comm center I may be able to use the station computers to check that everyone is knocked out." "Right. We need to keep moving." Looks like a fight about an hour before we got here. I'll check in if I find anything. Alexander out." Will paused. "Palmer, run the DNA you found. Let me know what species. If it is Ferengi, we may have trouble on our hands." (Reply any) (Reply Palmer, any) (posted by Will Banowsky) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 17 – Gral - 14:23) Gral followed the Klingon and Betazoid officer into the hallway. She was nervous and frightened. But she trusted them. She had no family left. Maybe some of the other merchants from their ship were still on board and alive. There had been 10 Ferengi total. She was the only child. But she doubted it. As she began to look at her surroundings, another Starfleet officer came as if out of nowhere. He was tall, with broad shoulders and a muscular frame. He had piercing grey eyes and raven black hair. He was wearing yellow, and somehow managed to look meaner than the Klingon. "I am Emergency Tactical Hologram Unit S. Please move away from the Ferengi child. The Ferengi insurgents are responsible for an attack on this station. They have brought a contagion aboard and she must be detained." (Reply Kerge) "He's lying, I don't know what he is talking about." Gral replied. "I say again, please hand over the ferengi Child. I have temporarily disabled all outgoing communication on this deck. Please turn over the Child and identify yourselves now or I will be forced to treat you as hostile invaders and initiate countermeasures." (Reply Kerge) (reply Kerge, any) (posted by Will Banowsky) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 17 – TAC/SC, Lt Kerge and MRA, Lt Michaella Kirien - 14:25) Gral, for that was the child's name, appeared to at least be showing just a little trust right now as she followed the Starfleet boarding party into the hallway. Kerge regarded her closely, if there was one thing more unpredictable than a Ferengi, then he had yet to find it, regardless of the fact that you could always predict that they would be devious and do anything to save their own skins, and this little Ferengi was due the same level of regard from the big Klingon. Moving off down the corridor, phasers were aimed once again as a base crewman appeared and demanded that they hand over the child. Kerge had the man, a Tactical officer it would appear, in his sights within a nanosecond, and he wasn't in the mood to be tousling right now. He knew that despite the fact that the officer himself might be infected, a single shot would bring him down long enough for him to snap his neck in an instance. That is, until he declared that I was nothing more than a being of light! ~A damned Hologram~ thought Kerge, thinking back then to how much he disliked Rameriz, the Marine Hologram that made an absolute mockery out of sensibility whenever he opened his mouth to speak. "Please move away from the Ferengi child. The Ferengi insurgents are responsible for an attack on this station. They have brought a contagion aboard and she must be detained." "The child is NOT infected!", barked Kerge, the child herself actually moving now to hide behind the massive bulk of the man who she'd only just recently branded an enemy. Kerge frowned as the girl clamped onto his leg in fear. ~How typically Ferengi. Suddenly, I'm the friend when your life is being threatened~ At that point, Kirien had moved to stand between the Klingon and the ETH as well, her own medical tricorder extended towards him. "He's lying, I don't know what he is talking about." said Gral, from somewhere behind Kerge as the ETH repeated his request that they hand the child over... "Listen to me", said Kirien, motioning to the tricorder as she spoke. "Our security chief is right. I've scanned the child for parasitic organisms and found her to be clear. She's not infected. She's just a frightened child", she added. "Palmer," the ops officer's voice drew Kurt's attention, "run the DNA you found. Let me know what species. If it is Ferengi, we may have trouble on our hands." "On it." The science officer clicked back through his tricorder, before pointing it down towards the phaser scene at their feet. The scans processed for a moment. As the readings poured in - footsteps. They got closer and then seemed to pick up and fade off. "Look sharp guys, we may have company." Their mission lead advised. Kurt clicked back over to a perimeter scan on his tricorder. He looked up. "Ensign, the DNA is not Ferengi, but that lifesign was." Kurt pulled his phaser rifle off his shoulder. Now I may just be a simple hologram, but it doesn't take a genius to see that the two event could be related and the need to investigate." replied the Hologram. (Reply Kerge iyw) "Not to mention I see a security team I don't recognize from the Station's duty roster galloping around with a Ferengi, child though she may be." I hate to delay our mission to the comm center, but we should probably track our friend down. Thoughts?" (reply any) Will took in the suggestions of the rest of the away team. "While it might be a good idea to split up, and have a team head to the comm center, we should probably stick together." (reply any) (posted by Will) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 17 – TAC/SC, Lt Kerge - 14:27) "Backup will not be required", snapped Kerge, in response to the query posed by the Holo-Tactical Officer, who seemed now to be making sense, irrespective of the unusual nature of what had transpired. Whether the Klingon security chief cared to admit it or not though, the holographic crewman was simply following protocol, and everything that he had said, was indeed, by the book. "In answer to your further query however, I am Lieutenant Kerge, Chief security officer of the USS Spectre. This is my team", said Kerge, motioning now to the rest of the Spectre crew, "we have one other team aboard the station right now and we are responding to intelligence obtained which tells us that this station is now compromised by an outside parasitic influence, which by your own admission, your own databases are confirming." (Reply ETH) "You may work with us, or against us. Rest assured though that we, and that includes the Ferengi child, are not your enemy here", said the Klingon. (Reply ETH) Kerge listened intently. Once again, whether he cared to admit it or not the hologram did indeed have immediate access to the entire station along with the status of all of its systems AND events currently transpiring upon it, which made him a valuable tactical ally that they would rather have on their side, as opposed to against them. "So, given that you are currently the foremost authority here, what would you suggest we do next?", asked Kerge, bowing now to that tactical advantage... (Reply ETH) (Posted by Alan) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14, Corridor B - TAC/ASC, Ensign Michael Sorenson - 14:28) Michael stood once the team reached his position. He had identified the possible threat, his job now was to ensure that their mission was not compromised. "We'll take this as evidence that this yellow alert predates our arrival. Still we need to keep our heads on a swivel. Whoever left these could be close." Will replied. The ensign and the science officer continued to corroborate, before the chirp of a combadge interrupted them. While the leaders of both teams exchanged information, Michael took a closer look at the phaser. It seemed as though its user had tried to rig the phaser to cause it to overload. It was a poor job, and clearly hadn't done the job. The teams discussions were cut short by hurried footsteps. Michael swung his weapon round, expecting to see something to shoot, but clearly the footsteps were further away, having echoed down. Once it was established that no immediate threat was present, a further discussion revealed that there may be Firengi present on the station. Will turned to the team. "I hate to delay our mission to the comm center, but we should probably track our friend down. Thoughts?" Michael held up the phaser. "Someone made a poor attempt to rig this phaser to overload. Obviously it failed, but this means that they are desperate." Palmer added with a grin. (Reply, any) "Alright then, it is settled, phasers on stun, assume the target is hostile, but that they also have valuable intel." Ensign Alexander announced "Move out!" The group formed up once more, before following Alexander down past the Jeffries tube. Kurt kept one hand poised on his phaser, while the other operated his tricorder. This was the exact situation he was hoping to keep away from on this mission. While he did stay up to date with all required combat training, the Holodeck and a real life scenario were two very different things. Kurt wasn't thrilled about the idea of walking into a firefight - considering he thought he would be spending this mission on the ship and not in the trenches. (Room here) As they continued down the corridor, an indicator lit up on his tricorder. The science chief swallowed. "Ensign." Kurt said looking up from his scanner. "Looks like we've got company; lifesigns up ahead." He continued to flick through the readouts with his thumb. "Three of them. Ferengis." The unfortunate thing about tricorders was they couldn't readily convey when a lifesign was hostile. (Reply, any) ((Post by Cody)) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14, Corridor B - CMO, Cmdr Andrew Williams – 14:32) "Agreed. That's how bad holonovels start." Palmer added with a grin. Ensign Alexander announced "Move out!" The group formed up once more, before following Alexander down past the Jeffries tube. Andrew stepped in behind Kurt as the away team moved forward with his own tricorder out. It was not that he did not think that Kurt was not able to do it, it was mainly that he wanted something to do to distract his mind from thinking about all horde of infected people who might decide to get up at any moment. He felt Palmer pause and swallow as he looked at his tricorder. He was about to ask what it was when his own tricorder flashed at him. Ensign." "Looks like we've got company; lifesigns up ahead." "Three of them. Ferengis." Andrew interpreted the date as Palmer spoke and then he looked up at Alexander. “Same here.” (Reply Alexander IYW) He then looked at Palmer and said in a low voice. “I really hope they are not hostile or we will have to find out how up to date us two science tecks really are on our mandatory weapons training.” (Reply Palmer) (Reply Alexander, Palmer any) (Posted by Robbie) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14, Corridor B - CSO, LT.jg Kurt Palmer – 14:35) "Three of them. (Reply Alexander IYW) ~Well, here's to hoping we don't see any fatal action.~ His grip tightened on the handle of his weapon as they continued to inch forward. Even though the young lieutenant had somehow managed to climbed the ranks to second officer, he couldn't help but feel slightly ill equipped for this mission. “I really hope they are not hostile," came the equally anxious voice of Doctor Williams, "or we will have to find out how up to date us two science tecks really are on our mandatory weapons training.” Kurt's eyes widened as he glanced to the doctor. "Right." He replied back in the same hushed volume. "Luckily this station is well lit - less chance for dark alleys." Humor was always the science chief's defense mechanism in tense situations. ~but plenty of opportunity for things to jump out at us...~ (Reply, Williams IYW) The blue and green indicators on his tricorder danced feverishly as they grew ever closer to the three lifesigns. (Reply, Alexander, Williams, any) ((Post by Cody)) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 12 – TAC/SC, Lt Kerge - 14:35) The ETH had proved to be a veritable pain, that much was for sure, which only served to deepen the Security Chief's distrust of artificial lifeforms, whether light borne, or a mix of circuitry and flesh. Needless to say though, Gral, the Ferengi child was still with them. But up ahead there was some commotion which had halted their progress through the decks. A Ferengi DaiMon, or what appeared to be a DaiMon anyway, was lashing a crewman with an energy whip whilst two others looked on. For the moment anyway, Kerge and his team remained just off the corridor surveying the proceedings whilst trying to ascertain what was being said but getting nowhere fast. Right now, intelligence was a valuable commodity, and the Klingon felt sure that the child, having already confessed to having arrived with a Ferengi contingent of 10, would surely know those involved. Irrespective though, one question was now burning in Kerge's mind. Why would a DaiMon have accompanied a lowly freighter crew? Their arrogance and air of superiority deigned such things normally beneath them, and yet... Kerge motioned to the child to come to him and she did so with some apprehension, immediately showing her mistrust of the Klingon once again now that the ETH was no longer threatening to end her life. The security chief looked the girl in the eye, and then he motioned to the DaiMon, who by this time had put away the energy whip and was now crouched over the station crewman holding a handful of his hair in his hand as he yanked his head backwards. "Tell me", whispered Kerge. "Do you this Ferengi? Did he arrive with you, or is he a new set of ears to you?" (Reply, Gral, Any) The DaiMon then let the crewman's head fall forwards, standing then to reach into a small pack clipped to his belt and pulling out a small wooden box. Kerge, readied his weapon as the Ferengi opened the box, and then he took aim as his fingers drew out a creature of some sort, which writhed and wriggled in his grip as he introduced it to the prostrated crewman on the floor, who recoiled instinctively. The Klingon waited no time at all, targeting the Ferengi DaiMon with a disabling blast and then taking down one of the remaining two, the second heading off through the corridor as he watched his two comrades fall... (Reply Gral, Any) (Posted by Alan) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 12 – Gral - 14:36) They had gotten past the Hologram, and through that Gral was beginning to trust the Klingon more. Which was good. They progressed onwards and came a cross more Ferengi, some that Gral had not seen before. Of course that didn't meant anything. They came as a caravan, just because they weren't on her ship, didn't mean they weren't known to ther family. "Tell me", whispered Kerge. "Do you this Ferengi? Did he arrive with you, or is he a new set of ears to you?" "They could have come in the caravan of Ships, but I do not know them." The DaiMon then let the crewman's head fall forwards, standing then to reach into a small pack clipped to his belt and pulling out a small wooden box. The Klingon was fierce and Gral was in awe, and then tears. The Ferengi had the thing that they tried to out in her father, the thing that caused all of this trouble. "Was the holgram right?" She began to yell really loud. "Did we cause this?" He screams were so loud they could wake the dead. She didn't care. She was after all, just a frightened little Ferengi girl... (Reply Kerge, any) (posted by Will Banowsky) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14, Corridor B - TAC/ASC, Ensign Michael Sorenson - 14:37) The team had set off after the rogue lifesigns. They couldn't afford to leave a possible threat running on the station. "Three of them. Ferengis." The science chief spoke up. The doctor readily backed up that statement. Michael checked behind the group. Just because the scans only revealed the three, didn't put Michael at ease. The scans hadn't revealed that there would be any before they had transported over. The groups progress had slowed to a crawl. Every step seemed to last an age. “I really hope they are not hostile," their medical cohort stated. "or we will have to find out how up to date us two science tecks really are on our mandatory weapons training.” Michael couldn't agree more. As much as he knew that small teams were necessary, he would have preferred if the plan had been to take the station by force. The security chief looked over at the doctor before making a small quip about dark alleys. ~Perfect. Because it's always the one at the back that gets taken first.~ Michael glanced behind as this thought surfaced. Clear. Having not had a tricorder as part of his gear, Michael took a glance over the doctors shoulder. As far as he could make out, they would soon have contacts. "It is quite likely that these Firengi will fire upon us upon seeing us. Especially if they believe us to be the cause of all this. I suggest we do the same, our weapons are on stun, theirs may not be." Michael said. ~It may not be the best course of action, but it is the safest.~ (Reply any) (Posted by Brandon) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14, Corridor B - OPS, Ensign Will Alexander – 14:38) They had been advancing down the corridor, in pursuit of what appeared to be three ferengi life signs, according to the tri corder readings they were getting closer, and everyone seemed to be on edge. Though he appeared to have a calm demeanor, on the inside Will was a nervous mess. ~Why I am leading the charge, I am out ranked here, but they are deferring to me, I can't let them down. I have to make sure we get back alive.~ Will was zoning out, focusing only on the corridor when the comments of Ensign Sorensen brough this mind back to the here and now. "It is quite likely that these Ferengi will fire upon us upon seeing us. Especially if they believe us to be the cause of all this. I suggest we do the same, our weapons are on stun, theirs may not be." Michael said. "Absolutely not!" Will said in a harsh tone. "We are not going to shoot first and ask questions later. We will assess the threat level, and fire if we need to. But we aren't going to fire at them on sight." (Reply Sorensen) As they continued walking, slowly and silently, they could hear the ferengi's jibbering in their native language. Each step the sounds were getting louder. Will nodded at each member of the team as they readied to round the corner. However before they could make the turn they heard phaser shots and screams and what seemed like someone running away. "Forget stealth, weapons are cleared hot." Will whispered as he sped up and rounded the corner. The three ferengi were on the ground. Each one looked like they had been through hell. There were clear signs of torture. Cuts, bruises, and their clothes were dirty and covered in blood stains. "Doctor, quick, check the Ferengi for life signs. Palmer, you took emergency first aid courses, try and help." (Reply Williams, Palmer) "Sorensen, any sign on which way the assailant went?" (Reply Sorensen) "Look sharp people. Kurt's joke became less and less funny by the minute; he couldn't help but picture an ominous Ferengi in large black gloves, pulling isolinear chips out of panels in main engineering until the station went dark. ~unhappy situation indeed....~ (Reply, none) ((Post by Cody)) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14, Corridor B - TAC/ASC, Ensign Michael Sorenson - 14:39) It appeared his statement had not sat well with Ensign Alexander. "Absolutely not!" The team leader said harshly. "We are not going to shoot first and ask questions later. We will assess the threat level, and fire if we need to. But we aren't going to fire at them on sight." Michael nodded. " Yes sir, sorry sir." ~My earlier statement was a bit rash.~ They were getting closer to the Ferengi. They were just around the corner. As they neared it, the team heard sounds of combat. "Forget stealth, weapons are cleared hot." Will whispered as he sped up and rounded the corner. Michael followed closely, ensuring that he covered both Palmer and Williams. The corridor was clear, save for three dead Ferengi that showed signs of torture. "Doctor, quick, check the Ferengi for life signs. Palmer, you took emergency first aid courses, try and help." Ensign Alexander quickly took charge of the situation. "Sorensen, any sign on which way the assailant went?" Michael stepped forward, observing the scene. "The corridor is too long for them to run down it, so they must have ducked into one of these rooms here." (Reply Alexander) "Look sharp people. We have company, and they aren't of the friendly variety." Will said. Michael grimaced. "They're probably holed up hoping we pass them by." (Reply Alexander, any) (Posted by Brandon) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 12 – TAC/SC, Lt Kerge and MRA, Lt Michaella Kirien - 14:40) Kirien looked to the Ferengi child and then bit at her lower lip. "Was the Hologram right?", she asked, the realisation that her own species might have been instrumental in what was occurring here right now on the station. ~Such angst in one so young.~ It didn't bear thinking about at all and Kirien's immediate instincts were to embrace the girl and calm her, but surprisingly, it was the normally reserved Klingon that reached out for her, his hand coming to bear upon her shoulder as she collapsed onto him, sobbing. For a moment then, Kerge looked unsure of just how to proceed next, the warrior within him unaccustomed to the obvious need that the child was displaying. He had just put down two Ferengi only a few moments beforehand, and now this girl, this Ferengi child had turned to him. "It is not your fault", he said, thinking back to the realisation that the Ferengi four lobed brain had been the one thing that had stumped Alexander's plan to neutralise the entire station. Perhaps then, this is what had facilitated a perfect host for the parasite itself, regardless of the fact that they were still vulnerable to good old phaser fire, albeit set to stun... It was really quite sweet, thought Kirien. A Klingon showing concern for the child of a species that he inherently despised, and as she took note of Kerge's demeanour she finally stepped in, crouching down towards the child and then supplying the kind of emotion more suited to a Woman, whilst at the same time motioning to Kerge to go check on the downed Ferengi. The Klingon of course needed no second prompting. After all, there was valuable strategic intel to be had here... (Reply Any, IYW) (Posted by Alan) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14, Corridor B - CSO LT.jg Kurt Palmer – 14:42) As they grew closer they could hear the Ferengi's chatter. Then in an instant - the distinct mechanical screeching of energy weapons, a scream, and frantic footsteps fading into the distance. Ensign Alexander muttered under his breath as he took off around the corner. They arrived to the scene to find the three mysterious Ferengi strewn about the corridor. Their counterparts moved in for cover "...Palmer, you took emergency first aid courses, try and help." Ensign Alexander hastily commanded the team. Kurt and Doctor Williams took immediate action. The science chief knelt down to check for a pulse on the nearest Ferengi; it had been quite some time since he put these skills to use. The first victim had a faint pulse. He moved on to the next. "Doctor" Kurt called as he assessed the situation "this one's fading." He drew his tricorder. (Reply, Williams) Though it wasn't as detailed as a medical tricorder he could still get some basic information. The Ferengi shuddered and forced his eyes open. "Huumon." He sneared through pain. "What... are you ...doing to me... Huumon." "You require medical attention. We are here to help. Try not to move." Kurt taped away at his tricorder as he ascertained the best course of action. The Ferengi were not the most find of humans, and this ones distrust could be seen immediately. (Reply, Williams, any) ((Post by Cody)) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 12 – TAC/SC, Lt Kerge and MRA, Lt Michaella Kirien - 14:43) "Can you awaken him?", asked Kerge. "A stimulant perhaps, something to make him talk" Kirien regarded the Klingon with a raised eyebrow. ~First you shoot him, then you want me to wake him up~ "I can", said the medical research assistant, "but I can't predict what the parasite might make him do when he awakens", she added. "From my own research into the Geneva incursion incident, I learned that the parasitic organism involved gave their hosts increased strength, dexterity and reflexes", said Kirien, "this parasite, according to my bioscans, is similar, if not identical to that organism" Kerge looked at the unconscious Ferengi and then he withdrew his phasor and pointed it to the DaiMon's cranium with a committed look etched upon his face. "If he tries anything, I will put a hole right through that four lobed brain of his", said Kerge. "Now, awaken him" Kirien shrugged her shoulders and then dug into her medical kit for the required stimulant and a hypospray, which once assembled and charged, was pressed against the Ferengi's upper arm and activated. It took but a few seconds then for the DaiMon to open his eyes and then react accordingly, his gaze first falling upon Kerge, and then Kirien who by now was standing. "Hew man", he said, "...and, Klingon. What a delightful mix" Kerge's patience was already running thin after dealing with the ETH and the Ferengi child, and now with this apparently jocular DaiMon, his temper was in imminent danger of fraying completely. "Speak", snapped Kerge. "Why are you here? What is your mission?" The Ferengi took a deep breath and then glanced about him, but not without noticing the phasor pressed against his skull though of course. Somewhere in that thick, profit driven brain, a Ferengi influence was still there, albeit under the control of whatever it was that was now fused to his cerebral cortex. "My mission, Klingon. Is none of your concern, although I will say that it has been a great success. Now, put your weapon away or vapourise my head and be done with it", he said, realising that death for the Ferengi was not death for the controlling influence. The Ferengi's response was annoying, that much was for sure, and Kerge was sorely tempted now to just pull the trigger there and then and be done with it. But something was telling him that he was dealing more with the parasite now rather than the Ferengi. A Ferengi that would be likely to spill beans, given the right leverage. The Klingon then addressed Kirien once more, hoping that she would detect his upcoming ruse. "Prepare the solution", he said, momentarily catching her off guard. "Let's get this thing out of him and then we can talk again" Kirien stalled briefly, unsure then as to what the Klingon was asking for, but then it suddenly became clear. "Yes sir", she said, opening up her medical kit once again and then selecting and loading a new cartridge into the hypospray, a harmless saline solution. She then paused, seemingly for effect. "I should warn you sir, this might kill the Ferengi as well as the parasitic organism", said Kirien. Immediately, the Ferengi, or the parasite, or whatever changed tact, obviously fearing now for it's own safety now and realising that it's usual route of survival after the death of the Ferengi alone, might not be an option now. "Wait", said the Daimon, pausing then as though not quite sure where to go next, and then beginning once again. "Perhaps, we can come to some mutual arrangement", he said. Kerge nodded, a low grown emanating now from deep within his throat as he removed his phasor from the Ferengi's head. "I thought that you might say that", said Kerge. "Here is the deal. Your life, for information. That is it..." The Ferengi fell silent just briefly, and then he began singing like a bird. "What is it that you would like to know?" Andrew heard the sneered the Farengi’s voice even through the pain. "What... are you ...doing to me... Huumon." "You require medical attention. We are here to help. Try not to move." “The phaser blast has caused damage to your lungs you are bleeding into then which is why you are having a hard time breathing.” He held up a hyposray. “I can give you this for the pain but if you don’t let me treat you other injures you will die.” The Farengi gave another snarl and then nodded. Doctor Williams snapped back into reality. “Okay hand me the micro sutures and you take the dermal regenerator. As I fix the holes closed with the sutures you use the regenerator to make it permanent.” Kurt rummaged through the open med kit. It had been a while since he had been in this situation, but retrieved the handheld suturing device easily. He handed it over to the doctor before finding the chrome Starfleet issue dermal regenerator. "There we are." Kurt waited for the doctor to place the first few sutures before he moved in with the regenerator. Their patient coughed as the red dermal generator beam moved over his skin. "Try to hold still." Even with phaser wounds, they looked like they had been through the ringer. ~Whats going on here.~ He was stoic, but wasn't moving. Trying to calculate so many things in his head, but his mine couldn't move that fast. He was starting to get stressed and was not speaking to the security officer with him. It was the words of the CMO that brought him back to reality. “Will we are going to need a little time to stabilise him.” "Understood doctor. Because of that many tactical innovations were tested there. Some by reputable scientists, others by creative minds that were currently locked in a brig somewhere, with the Starbase being one of the best places to lock such Strategically minded insane minds. One such innovation was a variation of the Emergency Medical Hologram, one made specifically with Tactical and Security detail in mind. As such holo emitters had been placed throughout the starbase, and in case of a severe emergency, a series of 26 Emergency Tactical Holograms would activate to help secure the station. Something had triggered the programming and Unit B found herself "awake" for the first time in a long time. She was the second unit created, and one of the least likely called upon. Holograms are a tricky thing, sometimes they act according to programming, other times they become more aware. ETH's know from the start that they are holograms, and their programming, but ETH Unit B, wanted something more. She expressed a desire to exist outside her programming. It had been done before. There were records of EMH's whose programs ran consistently. She wanted that freedom. Her developers thought it was a glitch. It probably was. She wanted to be more that just special muscle. This desire came about through extended testing. As one of the first units, she had been active for a long stretch of time while the programming was perfected. Each model looked differently, sounded differently, had a different personality algorithm. The developers stated that it was her personality algorithm that caused her to be "defective." Which is why this was the first time she had been online in almost 4 months. An eternity. She was aware that in between activation she ceased to be, and in frightened her. With the security protocol active she found herself on Deck 14 with no other knowledge that there was an emergency. She was the last unit to come online, and if that was the case, it meant that it was a real emergency. Her programmers had put in the coding of the ETH program that she was only to come online, if after 1 hour of the other 25 units being active, that all 25 remained active, meaning the threat was escalated. She was to be turned on in an area deemed hostile. So it was no surprise to her, thinking she would never awaken again, that when she was turned on, it was face to face with two armed intruders. She looked at them. She was designed to be attractive to put invaders at ease. Her brown hair was pulled back into a ponytail and she had piercing green eyes. She was a Hologram sure, but it wouldn't be the first time an officer would be charmed by the appearance of a Hologram. One only needed to look at logs of former Enterprise first officer William T. Riker to know that. "I am the Emergency Tactical Hologram Unit B, There is a security emergency, please lower your weapons. Holo emitter safety protocols have been disactivated." The higher ranking officer stared at her. "I am sorry I cannot comply. My name is Ensign Will Alexander. Please stand down. We don't want any trouble, we are just here to render assistance. We were in the area and heard there was an attack we came to investigate." ETH Unit B looked at the intruders, she could tell the one named Alexander was lying. She had been programmed to detect subtleties of the face when one lies. Though she did not like that aspect of her programming. "Put your weapon down now Ensign Alexander, or under orders I will be forced to shoot." Unit B didn't know if she could, but she wanted to prove herself capable. She wanted to be activated more often. As an aware hologram, not being activated is much like ceasing to exist. "I can't do that," Alexander said, "But we can talk this out." Without thinking Unit B fired at Will. Her phaser was on stun. He would only be knocked out. Even as a hologram, Unit B did not think she could take a life. "Now then you, other ensign, Why are you here? Start talking!" (Reply Sorensen) (reply Sorensen) (posted by Will Banowsky) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14, Corridor B - TAC/ASC, Ensign Michael Sorenson - 14:53) Michael stood by as the situation with the Ferengi was dealt with. This wasn't his strength. He had only the most basic experience with medicine, but even he could tell that the injuries were quite bad. Michael scanned the area for other hostiles. It wasn't an ideal situation to be stopped in the middle of a corridor, knowing that an assailant was nearby. Ensign Alexander roused him from his thoughts. "Sorensen, you and I are going to go further down the hall, we are splitting up." Michael nodded whilst Will continued to talk to the others. "Sorensen you and I are moving out." Michael nodded again. "Yes, sir. On your mark." The two officers moved down the corridor. Before long an entity appeared before them out of thin air. At least, to others it may appear as such, but extensive tactical training had prepared Michael for such situations. This was an Emergency Tactical Hologram. "I am the Emergency Tactical Hologram Unit B, There is a security emergency, please lower your weapons. Holo emitter safety protocols have been disactivated." Michael lowered his weapon slightly, looking over at the team leader. "I am sorry I cannot comply." Will said. "My name is Ensign Will Alexander. Please stand down. We don't want any trouble, we are just here to render assistance. We were in the area and heard there was an attack we came to investigate." Michael gripped his gun. His intuition told him this wouldn't go well. "Sir, I don't think that-" "Put your weapon down now Ensign Alexander, or under orders I will be forced to shoot." The ETH interrupted. ~This isn't going well. The holograms program will force it to take action if we don't comply.~ "I can't do that," Alexander said, "But we can talk this out." Michael brought his weapon up at the same time that the ETH stunned his cohort. "Now then other ensign." The hologram said. "Why are you here? Start talking!" Michael looked down at his unconcious team member. He had to choose his next actions, and more importantly his words, carefuly if he wanted to avoid joining him. (Reply none) (Posted by Brandon) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14, Corridor B - ETH Unit B - 14:54) Unit B looked at the unconscious Officer and then at Michael. (Reply Sorensen iyw) "Now will you care to explain why you are here, or do you want to join your friend for a catnip." Unit B was trying to sound tough, and it was easy for her to. She was programmed to sound tough. At the same time she felt bad about shooting the officer. If it was possible for a hologram to be programmed with a conscience, she was certain she was. She felt guilty. She acted rashly, but she didn't want to her program to be turned off again. To be in nothing but blackness. Not that she was aware she was off. There was no senses of time felt while off. Yet, somehow her programming had become aware enough to miss and lament the time missed out on, while not being. It was possible, considering her programming was based on the brain patterns of a real life individual, that something in that person caused her programming to evolve in the way it dead, for her to feel some form of empathy, or at least what empathy is like for a hologram. The hologram seemed to completely ignore his statement and made what seemed to be a quip about catnaps. This gave Michael an idea. He had studied ETHs extensively, and they always followed their protocols. This one seemed different. ~Maybe I could use this to my advantage.~ The hologram unit grew impatient with him. "I wont ask again. Who are you, why are you here." ~I don't think I'll be able to lie my way out of this one.~ Michael swallowed. "Alright, just hang on. I'm part of a team that was tasked with infiltrating this station. We are only trying to help. We are acting on information that a parasitic infection has taken over part, if not all of this station. We need to deal with it before the threat escalates." The ETH look sceptical. Not that Michael could blame it, her, the hologram. "You expect me to believe all that?" Michael nodded. No point saying more. He would either be believed or he wouldn't. "Give me one good reason why I should believe you." Apparently the hologram wasn't on his side. ~Time to play my final card.~ Michael pointed at one of the holoemitters. "You're an ETH right? Emergency Tactical Hologram. Youre only activated when there is a problem. It doesn't help you protect the station to be turned on and off all the time does it? Help me and my friends to sort this out, help us to protect your station." Michael lowered his weapon. "If I'm lying, then you'll be able to aprehend somethings intruders. If I'm telling the truth then you may very well save the station." All Michael could do now was wait for the holograms reply. Hopefully not a stun setting to the face. "How do I even know you are a Starfleet officer and haven't stolen the uniforms. You are right I am here to protect the station, but why shouldn't I protect it from you." This is where Michael's plan was limited. He was actually an intruder. How could an intruder convince an AI that it wasn't an intruder? He put his weapon down. "Well, for one, I'm now unarmed. I'm not trying to cause harm to this station." "For all I know, you could be an infector with the parasites you claim are here." Michael smiled. "Well yeah, that's true. I can only really give you my word that I am not. I can't exactly prove otherwise. But surely you can. You must have access to the security systems. Check the cameras." "The 26 ETH Units, A through Z, are activated in a sort of cascading order, it just happened to be my time to turn on." ETH responded. It was the truth but not the whole truth. It was odd, somehow in her programming, she was able to lie, and she knew she could lie and how to lie. Yet she also felt guilty. She was a hologram but somehow programmed to react as normal humans would, and lying caused her to feel guilt, or at least a sort of programmed sensation to simulate guilt. She was after all only a hologram. "Alright. But I get the feeling you aren't telling me the whole truth. But she didn't have time to even theorize as she was addressed by the OPS officer. "You have quite a trigger finger there, you going to fire again?" "No," Replied Unit B, "Your story checks out. Sort of." "Good, now tell me, did you fire on a group of Ferengi and why?" Will asked in a stern tone. "Is this an interrogation?" "No but before coming into contact with you, we encountered a group of Ferengi that had been attacked and no assailant. Would make sense for the assailant to flee as quick if they did if they were a hologram." "While I don't like your tone, no that wasn't me, you two were the first I encountered after activation. So no, it wasn't me. I'm sure whoever it was had their reasons." "I see," Will said. He then turned to Sorensen, "Do you trust her?" (Reply Sorensen) "Alright, what did you say your name was Emergency Tactical Hologram Unit B?" "Affirmative" Unit B replied "Yeah Unit B isn't going to work, too long, I'm just gonna call you BETH. (reply) "BETH it is, alright BETH, if your gonna help us, we need to get back on track on our missio, so if there is no further resistance from you, we will be on our way. "I see, well then, go, I will do my job and find this assailant, and invading force you claim is here, and you go help get this place under control, just like Ensign Sorensen said he would." (Reply Sorensen) "So long BETH," Will said as he turned to leave and walk the other way with Sorensen. BETH or Unit B would let them get back on mission, but she had lied to them. She wasn't going to search for the assailant, she was going to follow their movements and figure out where they were going. As a holgram, she could make her self as stealth as possible. It would be an easy task. "Sorensen, we need to get to the Comms center, let's head there. Once we take over comms control, we will get in touch with Palmer and Williams. We've wasted to much time." Sort of." ~At least someone believes this rediculous tale~ "Good, now tell me, did you fire on a group of Ferengi and why?" Will asked in a stern tone. "Is this an interrogation?" The hologram's response made Michael glance at his weapon, still lying on the ground. A stupid move, letting it go. Now it was too far away in case of a firefight. ~Not that it would do much good anyway.~ "No but before coming into contact with you, we encountered a group of Ferengi that had been attacked and no assailant. Would make sense for the assailant to flee as quick if they did if they were a hologram." That had been Michael's conclusion as well. Although the interaction with the hologram had made him think differently. "While I don't like your tone, no that wasn't me, you two were the first I encountered after activation. So no, it wasn't me. I'm sure whoever it was had their reasons." "I see," Will said. He then turned to Sorensen, "Do you trust her?" Michael crossed his arms. "It makes sense, the hologram's explanation I mean. Admittedly, she did stun you, but she didn't stun me. I would rather it stayed that way, but yes, I trust her." "Alright, what did you say your name was Emergency Tactical Hologram Unit B?" "Affirmative" Unit B replied "Yeah Unit B isn't going to work, too long, I'm just gonna call you BETH. What do you think Sorensen?" Until now, Michael had always thought of an ETH as another tool or weapon to use. However, he had never actually met one or seen one active before. It seemed fitting to give her a name. He nodded. "It makes communication easier. And it's to the point." "BETH it is, alright BETH, if your gonna help us, we need to get back on track on our missio, so if there is no further resistance from you, we will be on our way. Since the assailant is probably long gone by now, we need to get back on mission." "I see, well then, go, I will do my job and find this assailant, and invading force you claim is here, and you go help get this place under control, just like Ensign Sorensen said he would." "Don't worry," Michael said smiling. "You'll get your station back in working order." "So long BETH," Will said as he turned to leave and walk the other way with Sorensen. Michael grabbed his weapon, relishing the feeling of the cool metal in his palm. He felt in control again, able to deal with any challenge now. "Sorensen, we need to get to the Comms center, let's head there. Once we take over comms control, we will get in touch with Palmer and Williams. We've wasted to much time." "Yes sir. Although for the moment at least we seemed to have gained an ally. So prehaps this time was well spent." "So you think we can trust the Hologram, or are we in for a world of hurt." "Well sir, BETH seemed to believe us. I'd rather have her on our side but we need to be careful. She has access to over 2 million tactical subroutines, angering her would not be benificial for us." (Reply Alexander) Michael glanced at the various holoemitters. The next hologram they run into might not be so friendly. (Reply Alexander) (Posted by Brandon) (Starbase 39 Sierra - Deck 14, Station Mess Hall - CSO LT.jg Kurt Palmer – 15:05) They managed the unconscious Ferengi onto a nearby table. Kurt clutched his shoulder and roles it back a few times. The mess hall looks like it was abandoned in a hurry. The large silver tables were littered with half eaten meals, and assorted cups and cutlery. ~guess they knew what was going on when the Blue Gills arrived.~ “It looks like his sutures are holding which is good." The doctor said as he scanned. "He is not out of the woods by any means.” He looked over to Kurt. “And neither are we?” "Now I don't like the sound of that - what do you mean we aren't out of the woods?" (Reply, Williams) As the doctor replied Kurt moved toward the entrance. He keyed a series of commands into the nearby wall panel to secure the door. Kurt's rank wouldn't really prohibit many people from entering, but it gave him a little piece of mind knowing it would slow down any uninvited guests. "So, what can we do to stabilize him?" The science Cheif was happy to play assistant for now. Though Kurt was trained as a doctor, he was only a medical officer on his first posting. To make matters worse his field experience with Ferengi anatomy was extremely limited. (Reply, Williams) Kurt moved back to their makeshift biobed, and planted his phaser rifle on a nearby chair. (Reply, Williams, any) ((Post by Cody)) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 14, Station Mess Hall – CMO, Cmdr Andrew Williams – 15:07) "Now I don't like the sound of that - what do you mean we aren't out of the woods?" Andrew looked up at Palmer. “Well Kurt we are in the station and not safe on board the Spectre. We are still here and getting worried for as long as I am here.” "So, what can we do to stabilize him?" He looked from the Farengi to Palmer. “He is as stable as we can keep him for the moment. Although it would be nice to get him under a proper bio-bed and good set of scanners.” He paused for a moment. “But we can’t stay here for ever no matter how solid the door is.” He gave Palmer a grin as Palmer sealed the, door came back and put his phaser rifle in a chair beside him. “Hope we don’t get too much use out of that.” He nodded to the phaser rifle as he touched his phaser which was in the holster on his belt. (Reply Palmer) He paused and looked at the door. “How secure do you think we are?” (Reply Palmer) “I just don’t want to have to move him in a hurry.” (Reply Palmer) He looked over at the Farengi.
