I'm too close, well, Starfleet regulations prohibit that anyway." "But I'm distracted and with how painful the voices are today, I don't think that I should be working in the lab until I sort this through." Noah nodded taking it all in. “Well the pain and the lack of sleep should not be a problem. I can give you some pain killers and a sedative to sleep. Which is not a problem?” He paused for a moment “I know that you are busy if I can get a quick scan of you I can start looking into it.” (Reply Kirien) He ushered her over to the bio-bed and activated the beds sensors. “For the time being I can give you an inhibiter that should at least reduce your sensitivity until we get to the bottom of the problem. He ushered her over to the bio-bed and activated the beds sensors. She rattled on as the bed scanned her. It was very obvious that her life signs were elevated, both from the increased sensitivity and lack of rest as well as the pain and lack of sleep. From the readings she hadn't been sleeping well for several days. “For the time being I can give you an inhibiter that should at least reduce your sensitivity until we get to the bottom of the problem. How does that sound to you?” "It sounds like the best we can do, Noah, treat the symptoms. I just don't know what is triggering it. Maybe it's the stress of having one of my daughters away and the other in so much trouble. Do you think I should go see one of the Counsellors?" Maybe it's the stress of having one of my daughters away and the other in so much trouble. Do you think I should go see one of the Counsellors?" Noah thought about the answer as he turned and picked up the inhibitor. “That probably would be a good idea.” He placed the small disk shaped device on to her neck and activated it. He waited a few seconds and then said. “How does that feel now?” (Reply Kirien) (reply Kirien, any) (posted by Robbie) (USS Spectre – FO’s Quarters – FO, Commander Hoshimi Tsukawa – 07:00) It was Minori’s 8th birthday and Hoshimi had just finished recording her customary birthday message to her daughter. She had watched it through, and was satisfied. “Computer, save message to file Minori Tsukawa.” [Message saved. Do you wish to send the message?] “No.” There was one more ritual to go through, and it was one that Hoshimi both looked forward to and dreaded in equal measure. “Open program Minori.birthday. Using DNA records and images of Minori Tsukawa from birth to age one year and referencing additional images and DNA records of Hoshimi Tsukawa and Ito Kurasawa saved to this program, generate a holo-image of Minori Tsukawa aged 8 years.” [Holo-image created. Do you wish the image to be displayed?] Hoshimi took a deep breath. “Yes.” Her eyes filled with tears as she looked at the image of her daughter the computer had generated: a smiling child, with Ito’s eyes and with long black hair tied into two plaits. She wondered if this was indeed how Minori would look now. The program she was using was as state of the art as Hoshimi could manage to get hold of, in fact it was the same one used by the Federation’s own bureau of missing persons which had been provided to all those who were looking for family members and loved ones who had gone missing during and in the immediate aftermath of the civil war. “Replicate this holo-image three times, once in a white frame, size 30cm tall by 20cm wide, and twice in a blue frame, 20cm tall by 10cm wide.” She walked over to the replicator, and as soon as the first picture was created, she took it and placed it on her bedside table, replacing the image already there which she had created on this same day one year ago. That one she placed on the shelf which already held Ito’s picture and the few genuine images she had of Minori as a baby and toddler, together with the holo-images Hoshimi had created over the years. The second image she set on her desk, and the third she intended to take to her office. Now there was only one thing left to do. “Upload holo-image to the Federation Bureau of Missing Persons, file reference CW.58461.MT, and check for new notations.” [Image uploaded. There are no new notations on file reference CW.58461.MT.] Hoshimi sighed. She had known that if there had been anything new she would have already received notification but there was always a part of her which hoped against hope. She knew the chances of finding her daughter were infnitely small but if one day the miracle happened, at least Hoshimi could show Minori that her mother had never forgotten her and never stopped trying to find her. She laughed “So I have had a quick look at your medical file. Have you had any problems since your last medical?" He Asked "You mean the deltan thing, one occourance documented ??? but it was during a long stress period, and i believe that cadet Holst had a pre determined crush on me anyway, other than that only a slight back cramp but only when i'm upping the level of the riding programs i'm 100 percent healthy, and hopefully god willing this is the only time you'll ever see me." She had long ago decided that she wanted to acquire the training that a starfleet officer would have. She had done some of the holodeck training programs, and she had read a lot, but what she really needed was a mentor. She tapped her comm badge, "Dr. Kirien to Commander Tsukawa, Commander when you have a free moment could we meet, please?" (reply Tsukawa) (posted by mel :-) (USS Spectre - Captain's Ready Room – ACMO, Ensign(jg) Zia Kirrin - 08:10) Zia was a little surprised to find that Oggie considered she needed ‘protection’ against some unspecified threat on the Starbase they were heading to. He even asked the Captain to protect her! The Captain seemed to be as surprised as Zia, and assured Oggie that no harm would come to either Zia or to Oggie himself whilst they were under his care. “Thank you, Captain T’Vhor,” Zia said gratefully. She turned to her companion. “And see, Oggie, I think that it will be you who will need the protection, not me,” she added earnestly. She thought it would be tactless to add that she thought her father’s position as an Ambassador of the RSE would afford as much protection as Captain T’Vhor and the two combined would be, she concluded, rather potent. She did, however, realise that had they remained on Station Echo One Zero, and had the Spectre away teams also been kept there, the position would be very different but now there were far too many people who knew that Zia and Oggie had reappeared. It occurred to her that there might be some people even within Starfleet and certainly within the Federation who might be just as unscrupulous as certain members of the Tal Shiar, but she supposed that there were kllhe everywhere and everywhere they were pretty much the same. She wondered if there was anything she could do about it, and decided to think it over. Oggie had done a lot to help her, it would be nice if there was something she could do in return. (Reply Oggie iyw) Captain T’Vhor then asked Oggie to tell him more about the device that he had shown to Zia, saying that there was not much about it in the reports that had come back to the ship from the station logs. As Oggie answered, Zia thought back to events on the station. When Oggie had finished, she added, “I think that the one called Linskens may be able to tell you something too,” she said. “He was most interested in the device and I think that it was when he managed to turn it off that everything returned to normal?” (Reply Marsh, T’Vhor, any) (Posted by Liz) (USS Spectre - Captain's Ready Room – COUNS, Ens., Oggie Marsh - 08:15) Oggie could not help to smile at Zia's defiance. You could not fault her spirit. Her experience, perhaps and Oggie wondered how much of her defiance would have come from the position of her parents. Oggie shrugged. They might be able to save her from the first, rather harmless questioning, but the people that Oggie knew, had dealt with, had been one of, the bastards that he had helped to create, they would not relent. They would be as tenacious as a pack of wolves, having picked up the scent of the prey. Oggie knew because he had taught them that. It was by far the darkest page in Oggie's chequered Star Fleet history. Of course, at the time, they were necessary. A pack of wolves, trained to sniff out the others, the followers of Doenitz. You would have thought that now, with Doenitz and his empire gone, the 'chosen men' would not be needed any more. But such was the folly of war. The creations of it would outlast the reason for their being by a long, long, while. They had proven to be useful and as such there were a few who would still use them. Oggie didn't really know who was by now the 'owner' of the chosen few but who-ever he or she or whatever it was, had a position buried deep, deep within the current government. Of course, there were others. Others like the President, who were hell-bent on ensuring that the ghosts from the past war would be laid to rest once and for all. And who better to have you assist in that task than the mentor of one of the secret groups from that period. So now Oggie was on the other side, which was in reality the same side still. But the President had been right, the only way to survive was to understand the enemy and finding ways to turn them into friends. The Galactic Cooperation was just one, rather obvious route. But secret societies were best handled by even more secret counter-societies. Honour. trustworthiness and an openness of mind would now be the arms that would secure the continued survival of the Federation both above and below the table. Oggie looked at Zia and smiled. "Oh, I am quite sure that the wolves will sharpen their teeth just for me, my dear. But there is a benefit to carrying a load of blubber. It makes it very hard to get at the innards." Oggie then looked at T'Vhor. "My thanks, Captain. Your assistance will no doubt proof very helpful." Captain T’Vhor then asked him to tell him more about the core. Oggie dutiful responded by telling him basically the same as he had told Linskens. He had included John's mumblings as far as they had made sense to Oggie, which in all fairness wasn't that much. Zia then added, “I think that the one called Linskens may be able to tell you something too,” she said. “He was most interested in the device and I think that it was when he managed to turn it off that everything returned to normal?” Oggie frowned. "But that was when we were all rendered unconscious and dropped out of phase. Or the station dropped out of phase, or something. But where we were helpless, the station and it's crew seemed not to be affected. The ones that were with Linskens when they tried to disable the device all had burn wounds but we were all apparently rounded up by the station personnel." Oggie fell silent for a moment. "Tell you something, though. Right from the start I have wondered about the project-leader, Mr. Gallagher. I had heard of him before but he seems to have been quite a big gun for such a 'simple' project. It was almost like they ...." Oggie fell silent again then suddenly he looked at T'Vhor. "They couldn't have set a trap or something, could they? A little experiment? Telling the right people at the right time? Perhaps that was why they locked off the station? Not to keep people out but to keep people in?" (Reply Zia, T’Vhor, any) (Posted by Adrie Geuken) (USS Spectre - Bridge – FO, Commander Hoshimi Tsukawa - 08:20) The meeting with Rydan having concluded, Hoshimi made her way back to the Bridge. Taking her seat, she received an alert to tell her she had a message waiting for her. [You have one message, timed at 08:07, from Doctor Michella Kirien.] “Play message.” =/\= Dr. Kirien to Commander Tsukawa, Commander when you have a free moment could we meet, please?=/\= ~Doctor Kirien… ah, the medical researcher with the twins.~ Hoshimi was aware that the twins both separately and together had caused a certain amount of what might charitably be described as mayhem on the ship. The teacher responsible for them was frequently less charitable in describing their antics as were several crew members. The First Officer frowned to herself. She was sure she’d heard something about one of them leaving the ship to attend some kind of cramming school for those children who thought they wanted to enter the Academy. The other twin had apparently not reacted well to this, if scuttlebutt were to be believed. ~I wonder what the girl’s done now, that her mother wants to see me?~ Hoshimi thought with a sigh. She tapped her commbadge. “Tsukawa to Kirien. Doctor, I can see you at 10am, if that is convenient for you. I suggest we meet in the Observation Lounge.” (reply Kirien, any) (posted by Liz) (USS Spectre - COUNS Office - COUNS Eleni Caras - 09:00) Eleni sat at her desk and paged through her appointments for the day. None of them were particularly difficult patients, which made her feel a little bit better. It'd been a hard couple of days for her. She stood up and paced over to her food replicator. "Computer I would like a raktajino, hot please." Eleni expected it to take a few moments but nothing happened. "Computer? Raktajino." This time the computer gave the answering chirp yet still no coffee appeared. "Hokay, Computer, lets try hot chocolate." Again the answering chirp, but what appeared was neither coffee not hot chocolate. It was a raw egg. Ellie hit her comm badge. "Counselor Caras to Engineering. Could you send a technician to my office please? My food replicator is misbehaving." She gave the thing an evil look before sitting back down. Engineering a nd Ops were good at fixing things. (reply anyone in engineering) (posted by mel :-) (USS Spectre - Observation Lounge – Dr. Michaella Kirien - 09:55) One thing that Michaella prided herself in was being punctual. So she found herself a few minutes early, standing in the lounge and looking out at the stars. She loved the view from a spaceship, it was in fact that feeling of home that most people seemed to have about the planets that they grew up on. However, Michaella had been raised on ships and stations, and even got her medical degree on a station. She raised her hand to touch the window, speaking quietly in latin, something about the stars shining. And so she didn't hear the Commander arriving, watching the stars go by. For a Betazoid she was being obtuse. A discrete cough had Michaella turning around. "Ah forgive me, Commander. I was daydreaming. I've always loved the way the stars flow past." She waited for the Commander to sit first, then took the adjoining seat. "I will try to start at the beginning. There are many things that my Starfleet file doesn't show." She looked very uncomfortable. "I was a civilian doctor aboard a Starbase, which one is unimportant. One of the men I was dating was a Betazoid, and his occupation was... well. He was a smuggler of designer drugs and the underground slave trade. I didn't know this, but I was approached by Starfleet Intelligence. This was before the war, and when his ring was cracked, I was in danger and Intelligence handed me a field commission of Lt. Commander. When the War began and I was forced to take sides, John Wilson, the Father of my twins died, and when I was attacked aboard Geneva, I was transferred to the Nimitz, then here. "As a result, I've not had an Academy experience. I've not had the training that I should have for my rank. This makes me a liability. I would like to fix this. I've read textbooks and done some holodeck training, but I need someone who has been through the experience to be a mentor. And what I read said that this is usually purview of the second or first officer." She took another deep breath. "I'm asking for help. Please." (reply Tsukawa) (posted by mel :-) (USS Spectre - Observation Lounge – FO, Commander Hoshimi Tsukawa - 10:00) At 1000 hours precisely Hoshimi walked into the Observation Lounge. Doctor Kirien was gazing out of one of the windows, apparently watching the blur of the starfields as they passed at warp. She didn’t seem to notice that Hoshimi had entered, so the First Officer gave a slight cough to indicate her presence. "Ah forgive me, Commander. I was daydreaming. I've always loved the way the stars flow past." Hoshimi inclined her head and took a seat, indicating that Kirien should be seated too. “So, how can I help you, Doctor?” she asked. Kirien sat down next to Hoshimi and looked uncomfortable, saying she would start at the beginning. She told Hoshimi some of her background, some of which Hoshimi already knew as she had perused Kirien’s record before the meeting. "As a result,” Kirien concluded, “I've not had an Academy experience. I've not had the training that I should have for my rank. This makes me a liability. I would like to fix this. I've read textbooks and done some holodeck training, but I need someone who has been through the experience to be a mentor. And what I read said that this is usually purview of the second or first officer. I'm asking for help. Please." Hoshimi pursed her lips in thought for a few moments as she considered what Kirien had said. The question had surprised her but at least it wasn’t a problem with Elizabeth that had landed in her lap! “If I understand you correctly, doctor, you are asking me to put you through the equivalent of four years Academy training here on board this ship?” She shook her head. “If you really want to have the training that you should have for your rank, which I believe is currently a brevet rank of Lieutenant junior grade, then what you should do is attend the Academy. They are geared up to train you, they have teachers and facilities that are simply not available on board a ship of the line.” She smiled, trying to soften what she was saying. “You can read all the texts you want and do all the holodeck simulations you want but it isn’t a substitute for the Academy. I can help you to a certain degree and I’m more than willing to do so, but you must understand that whatever help I can provide will not give you the training you need to become, if you’ll forgive the term, a ‘proper’ Starfleet officer. I mean no offense; you’re an excellent doctor and an invaluable addition to the crew, but as you yourself have just said, you are lacking the training necessary to become a full Starfleet officer as opposed to a civilian with a brevet rank.” She paused for a moment to allow what she was saying to sink in, then continued. “I can look into it further for you, if you wish. I believe there have been similar situations before and given that you have served on various starships over the last few years, and have also undertaken your own studies in that time, I think it might be possible for you to attend a much shorter and more intense course at the Academy to complete your training. I would need to put you through a few tests to ensure you were ready for that course, and assuming you are either I or the Captain would be happy to sponsor you. I would have to check but I believe there is an intensive course lasting 5 or 6 months which would be suitable. As I’m sure you realise quite a few people have found themselves in your situation since the end of the civil war, and that is one reason that the intensive course is now available. On your return to the ship I’d be more than happy to mentor you for a few months.” (Reply Kirien, any) (Posted by Liz) (USS Spectre - Observation Lounge – Dr. Michaella Kirien - 10:10) "As I’m sure you realise quite a few people have found themselves in your situation since the end of the civil war, and that is one reason that the intensive course is now available. The other, well, I hesitate to leave her on the ship without some parental supervision." The less said about that the better. The Commander would have all the information about that which was required. "Have you given thought to what my role will be when I return? I'm capable of serving as the chief medical officer, or continuing to head up the Research division. The project I'm finishing up in the next few weeks will be the culmination of several years of research, and I'll need a new assignment." She sighed again, leaning back in the chair and running her hand through her dark hair. Michaella still wasn't sure why she was being so overly sensitive to everyone today. Maybe Noah would have some answers when she made it back to sickbay. (reply FO, any) (posted by melinda :-) (USS Spectre - Observation Lounge – FO, Commander Hoshimi Tsukawa - 10:12) Rather to Hoshimi’s relief, Kirien said that she’d rather not leave her second daughter without parental supervision on the ship whilst she was away. Kirien then went on to ask what her role would be when she returned, saying that she would be capable of serving as CMO or continuing to head up the research section. Hoshimi smiled. “As you know, we have just received a new CMO replacing Commander Williams. I think it unlikely that Dr Noah will be leaving us any time soon, to be honest, and I have to say I rather hope he doesn’t. Too much change is bad for a department, you know. So I would think that, assuming you want to remain on the Spectre, continuing in your present position would be best. And I’d recommend that you think about taking up an Assistant Chief Medical Officer post before looking to step directly into a Chief Medical Officer position, but that’s up to you.” She paused. “I will put forward a recommendation that you be enrolled in the Academy course I mentioned, and I’m sure there won’t be any problems. As for your research once you return, I suggest you use the time at the Academy to look into what might be a suitable area for you to research once you return to us. As you know, being tied to a ship position will limit opportunities in some areas but will be a benefit in others. So take the time to think it through.” (reply Kirien iyw, any) (posted by Liz) ========================================================================= Mission: Slipstream Day: 4 Stardate: 2414.03.13 (USS Spectre - Arboretum - Science Officer Lt. Amari Riya - 10:00) Amari sat on her favorite stool at the workbench in her small office in the Arboretum. She knew that the ship was due to dock today, and she kept going back and forth on if she wanted to do anything while there. Truthfully she wasn't sure. She didn't really seem to know that many people on board, even the ones in her own department. She made a quick decision and sent a note around to the entire science department: Let's take over one of the holosuits and have some fun. I have reserved Holosuite B for our use from 1400-1900. Drink are on me. Let's unwind some. Lt. Amari Riya. She sat back and hovered over pushing the send button for a long moment then hit it hard. She wasn't sure who was going to be there, or even if someone would show up at all. ~All you can do is hope, Amari.~ She thought to herself, turning back to her work. (reply any) (posted by mel :-) (USS Spectre - COUNS Office – COUNS, Ens. Oggie Marsh - 10:50) Oggie sniffed as he, again, looked at the replicator and the card in front of it. ‘Under repair, do not use’ it read, as it has been saying for the last two days. He was pretty sure that it was part of a conspiracy, led by Zia and Noah, to stop him from snacking. He grunted and looked at his screen as a short message flashed up. Oggie read it and frowned as he did so. “I see,” he said then did a quick search on the database. Having a teacher contact counselling when they felt one of their pupils was not performing as required was one thing, even though Oggie wondered why the parents had not been contacted first. Surely they would have been the first port of call? But to use a counselling session as punishment? And from what he found after the search it hadn’t been the first time. It was a counselling office, for crying out loud, not a penal colony! Oggie grunted again and made a mental note to have a little word with the teacher. He logged the message for attention of Elani, as he presumed so would want to have first crack, so to speak, as she had dealt with them before. For a moment he contemplated looking up this ... Elizabeth but quickly decided against it. If Elani took the case he would not need to get involved. And if Elani didn’t want the ‘honour’ Oggie wouldn’t believe anything in reports created by other counsellors anyway. He would do an evaluation himself and make up his own mind. Oggie sniffed again as his gaze was drawn to the replicator. He almost got up to establish whether the replicator was working or not when his chime suddenly rang out. Oggie frowned for a second, then put himself back in his chair as he used the door override on the desk in front of him. A girl with brown pigtails was revealed when the door swished open. “Come in,” Oggie bade her. “ I presume you are ....” Oggie re-read the message on the screen. “Elizabeth? I am sorry, but Elani is not in at present. Take a seat.” (Reply by Elizabeth (iyw) “My name is Oggie Marsh, I am a new counsellor on this ship.” Oggie smiled. “Now then, I must admit that I rarely deal with children. My speciality is adult behavioural patterns. So you are welcome to wait for Elani if you prefer her. If not, then I will treat you like an adult and I will expect you to behave like an adult, ok?” Oggie shot her a glance. “Which brings me to my first question. Do you actually want to be here? I can’t help you if you do not want to be helped. Which, incidentally, I will try and explain to your teacher. At a later date. Now then, do you want me to help you?” Oggie stared at the child, knowing full well that that would make his eyes pop out a little, which seemed to go down well with most children. Which, incidentally, I will try and explain to your teacher. At a later date. Now then, do you want me to help you?” She looked at him like he had grown another head, and she was convinced that he was firmly out of his mind. "I uh, no I don't need to wait for Counsellor Caras. She and I haven't really been able to get along anyway..." "Uh. Do I want to be here? I want to get into Starfleet Academy and become a fighter pilot. But I need holodeck time to practice and I can't get that without better grades or uh. Not messing up anymore. I seem to be good at messing up. And it's not like Mom really notices or cares about me. She's always loved Ella more. Ella the perfect. Ella in Starfleet Prep academy. Ella who is going to be a doctor just like mom. I... I'm not as good as she is. She's the good twin." Yeah it was obvious that Beth felt very inadequate. (reply Marsh) (posted by mel :-) (USS Spectre - COUNS Office – COUNS Ens Oggie Marsh - 10:59) His eyebrows drawn together Oggie listened to the young girl. He had noticed that she had not answered his question. She was certain that she wanted something and she knew how to get what she wanted but somehow that didn’t seem to be enough. Instead she completely changed tack and described her family situation. Which in itself showed Oggie what she really wanted. That she was unsure of herself was in itself not a problem. It tended to become a problem when there was no-one in the close surroundings that would say the right thing at the right time. And from what she had said Oggie deduced that she must be from a single parent family. Since Ella seemed to have moulded herself to be a copy of the mother,Elizabeth must have moulded herself to be a copy of her father, who, no doubt, had been a pilot. Often children would mimic their parents in an attempt to be assured of praise and approval to fill their innate need for self-fulfilment. Oggie was quite sure that in itself she didn’t necessarily want to be a pilot. She just wanted to be praised, no, she needed to be praised as all children did. And since Ella had emulated her mother, Elizabeth had emulated her father. On perhaps Elizabeth had been the first to emulate. Not that that was of great importance, the actions had been undertaken, the die were cast. What Elizabeth obviously needed was a praiser. “I see,” Oggie said after a few seconds then tapped a little riff on the desk. Finally he came to a decision. “I’ll tell you what. In one week a new officer is supposed to arrive. He is an assistant CONN. I know that because his bio was forwarded to the counselling section and the CO. Personally I do not believe that sessions on the holodeck will help you as much as you think. So I will not interfere there. But I will contact this new officer and ask him to ‘foster’ you as a new cadet-pilot. Take you out on spins, give you a little training on piloting, teach you the do’s and the dont’s, that kind of thing.” Oggie stared at her. “*ON the condition* that you will improve your school results. If you don’t raise your results, the Academy will never even consider taking you and we do not want this new officer to waste his time, now do we?” Oggie looked at his screen and recalled the information he had reviewed an hour. “Hmm, you might be in luck. He’s an ex-test pilot. His name is Schliegler, Andreas Schliegler. Ok, we have a deal?” (Reply by Elizabeth, any) (Posted by Adrie Geuken) (USS Spectre - COUNS Office - SPC Elizabeth Wilson-Kirien - 11:00) Beth's teacher had not given her a choice. Her grades were slipping further and further down as she slipped into depression and apathy. She missed her twin sister. The smart one, the responsible one. The one her Mother had loved best. It just wasn't fair. Ella was the one most like her Mother, and Beth had always taken after their Father, John Wilson. Even before they had known about him, and then for the brief time period that they had with him before his death, Beth had followed in his footsteps. So she knew she'd be ok. He was always ok, able to pull off feats just by flying by the seat of his pants. It was part of what made him such a good pilot. And herself, she half admitted. She had done some not so legal things in her time, and had seen the file that listed his scores and evaluations. Ella had been the one to crack it, but it was Beth's idea. She just wanted to see what their Father had been as a pilot and a first officer. Ella had sneered at some of the comments made and stated that he should never have been an officer and maybe there was some truth to that. But if he could do it, Ella could as well. Sos he had been ordered to see the Counsellor. Not for the first time either, and while Counsellor Caras was nice, and also a Betazoid, which made everything easier, the two had never really connected. But there was a new Counsellor aboard and Beth was going to give him a shot. And so she found herself hovering outside the Counsellor's office, not quite having the courage to press the button. Her hand slipped and she rang the chime, waiting now for him to answer, and not being able to run away to hide. "Thank you!" she exclaimed then went on to repeat his offer. ”How do I get a tutor?" she continued but before Oggie could respond she hugged him and crashed herself into the chair. Oggie cleared his throat. “He will if he thinks you are serious about it,” he noted. “It is quite common for specialists to share their experience with trainees, cadets and the like. And I believe many trainers prefer their trainees to be young. It stops them from picking up bad habits, which they would have to get rid of first.” Oggie smiled. “I will, of course, have to inform the school of this deal and I will ask them at the same time who they have available for tutoring. Be aware, though, things are going to get quite busy for you. Not only is there your regular schoolwork, but there will be the tutoring and the training as well. All have to be done simultaneously or none at all. Will you be ready for that?” Oggie examined her face and smiled. But since Schliegler won’t be coming for at least a week, you’ll have some time to get a head-start on the other tasks, OK?” Oggie looked at her and nodded. “Oh, and I think I would like to have a word with your mother too. Just so she is aware of what is going on, that’s all. OK?” Oggie nodded again. “Do you want me to write an introductory message to mister Schliegler now or should I give you a few days to think it all through? Her heart began to beat a little faster although she kept an outwardly confident expression. Her suspicion that T’Vhor might be about to test her mettle was confirmed when he ordered the helm to slow to one third impulse and prepare for manual docking on Hoshimi’s order. Her mouth felt dry and she bent her head, studying the display on her armrest. Looking up again she saw the Starbase as a grey dot almost at the centre of the viewscreen, getting larger as they approached. The Spectre was directed to docking pylon 4 and welcomed home; in response Captain T’Vhor ordered an acknowledgement along with an encoded message to be sent. As soon as the officer at Tactical aknowledged receipt, the CO turned to Hoshimi. "The ship is yours Commander, take us in..." “Aye, Sir," she replied, her voice confident as if this wasn't the first time she had done this for real. Holodeck practice was one thing but being responsible for the manoeuvring of an entire starship was something else. Fleetingly she hoped she wouldn't scratch the paintwork - or worse. Aloud, she said, "Easy does it, Lieutenant Smith. Let her slow down gradually as we approach.” Keeping a watch both on the ship’s speed and her distance from the Starbase, Hoshimi monitored their approach. At 900km distance, she spoke again. “Standard orbiting speed, Lieutenant.” The ship slowed again, and again Hoshimi monitored distance and speed. Finally at 10km distance, Hoshimi gave the order for thruster speed only. “Open a channel to the Starbase. USS Spectre to Starbase 49 Approach Control. We are ready for docking.” =/\= Spectre, you are cleared to dock. =/\= “Acknowledged. Helm, initiate locking-on procedure at my mark. Mark.” (reply Smith iyw) “Standby umbilical and gravitational support. Lieutenant Smith, at my mark cut thrusters and let her glide in.” She waited a heartbeat, then: “Mark!” Silently, carried forward by her own momentum, the ship glided in to her assigned berth and came to a halt, and the docking clamps latched on with a gentle ‘clunk’ It wasn’t until that point that Hoshimi realised she had been holding her breath and she let it out slowly and silently hoping that no one would notice. Turning to the Captain, her face composed but her eyes sparkling a little from the experience, she said, “Docking clamps engaged, Sir.” (Reply T’Vhor, Smith, Any) (Posted by Liz) (USS Spectre - Bridge, Helm – Pilot Officer, Jennifer Smith - 11:53) "Helm, slow to one third impulse, prepare for manual docking on Commander Tsukawa's mark" “Aye Sir. Slowing to one third impulse power and manual docking on Commander Tsukawa's word.” She tapped a few quick commands as she powered down the warp engines to stand by dropping the ship out of warp. She then brought the impulse engines on line and engaged them as she watched the speed reduce she gradually increased the power to the impulse engines until their speed counter stopped at one third impulse power. She looked at the station in front of her and gave a quick smile to her self. It would be good to do some shopping while they had some leave. "Sir, Starbase Forty Nine is signalling", he began, "we are instructed to proceed to docking pylon four... Message addition - Welcome home Spectre" Jen quickly tapped in a few commands and the manoeuvring thrusters fired to orientation them onto the right heading for docking pylon four. "The ship is yours Commander", he said curtly, "take us in..." Her fingers resting gently on her console she waited for Tsukawa command “Acknowledged. Helm, initiate locking-on procedure at my mark. Mark.” She quickly imputed the commands “Initiate locking-on procedure your mark.” “Standby umbilical and gravitational support. Lieutenant Smith, at my mark cut thrusters and let her glide in.” “Mark!” Her fingers tapped the console as she brought thrusters to standby “Thrusters are at standby we are gliding in.” She watched as the speed slowed and the distance got closer. She saw the docking clamps reach out to get them as they slid into their assigned docking space. The ship stopped as the docking clamps engaged. She scanned the information on her console to see if there were any problems with the docking but every thing came back good. “Docking clamps engaged, Sir.” She heard Tsukawa report to the Captain as she powered down the thrusters and set everything to stand by. ~Good we are home~ (Reply any) (Posted by Robbie) (USS Spectre – Personal Quarters - SciO, Ensign(jg) Catriona Macbeth – 14:00) Cat regarded the contents of her wardrobe – now largely spread over her bed, a chair, and an ottoman – and sighed. She was really looking forward to the party on the holodeck organised by Amari, but she didn’t know what to wear. ~ Formal? Informal? Beach? Pool? ~ Finally she selected a bikini, worn underneath a long kaftan-style dress in dark blue silk. That, she felt, satisfied most criteria. The silk of the dress was slightly formal, the kaftan-style informal and should it turn out to be a beach or pool type of party, she was wearing her bikini underneath. ~ Sorted! ~ Reaching up, she loosened her hair from the knot which was supposed to keep it tidy but frequently failed to do so, and shook out her curls before running a comb through them. She nodded at her reflection in the mirror before slipping her feet into a pair of black sandals. She wondered if John and Ilana would be there, and hoped that they would. It was thoughtful of Amari to organise this party, it would be nice if everyone turned up. On that thought she tapped her commbadge. “Macbeth to Ensign Grey. She winced as she throught about everyone there looking casual and relaxed, she had brought only the barest minimums of civilian clothing with her. She tapped her comn badge again, forgetting she had already done it once. "Grey here, I... I'll pop by for a bit, whats the party in aid of?" She asked (Reply Macbeth) "I will see you there then." She stated simply, "Grey out." With that she closed the file and made the way back to her quarters, it seemed she had spent most of her time on this ship either in the science lab, sending reports or in her quarters cleaning up, it was suprising how with even a few personal items she managed to fill the space she had. Her civies left alot to be desired, she had one light tank top and some hiking shorts, nothing designed for a beach party really, however she pulled on the shorts and cursed her diminutive stature for possibly the trillionth time in her life. He picked up the last remaining personal item left in the room, apart from his two holdalls, one lying on the bed, and softly caressed the holo-photograph before placing it carefully in the open holdall. He zipped the bag shut and looked around again. He ticked the list in his head and realised that he was almost ready, only one item left to do. And that item, which had started at the top of the list, turned out to be the hardest one. He listed the computer screen and sat in front of it, waiting for some kind of inspiration coming to him. He sighed, got up from the chair and paced the room, trying to find the words. Another sigh and he sat down again, keying in a few commands, preparing a personal message to a list of people. He opened his mouth and snapped it shut, again proving that he was unable to deliver a spoken message. The words seemed all so ..... corny. “Come on, John, just one more. You’ve written them before,” he mumbled to himself. He stared at the empty screen then suddenly cursed, opening the holdall and activated the holo-photograph. displaying a laughing child wearing a spider-like creature on her head. An almost forlorn smile played around his lips and he knew that he was doing the right thing. He deactivated the device and put it away again. ~Then why is it so hard to say so?~ Suddenly his badge beeped and John grunted at first but then was strangely relieved by the intrusion. =/\= Macbeth to Linskens. John, you coming to the bash on the holodeck? Should be fun! =/\= ~Bash? John closed his eyes and suddenly realised a way out of his problematic last chore. “Hey Kiddo.” he finally responded. “Sorry, can’t make it. I have a transport picking me up in twenty minutes. I’ve got a few holiday days left and thought it a good idea to use some of them. I’m off to Earth. I’ll be gone for a few weeks, perhaps a bit longer. I still have three and a half months of holiday so I might be taking a bit more depending how things are turning out.” He sighed. “It’s Inez’s birthday next week and seeing that I never managed to attend one I thought it might be good to ......... (Reply Cat, any) (Posted by Adrie Geuken) (USS Spectre – Personal Quarters – SciO, Ens(jg) Catriona Macbeth – 14:11) Cat was dumbfounded when John told her that he was about to leave the ship for a few weeks. The reason he gave was a good one, although she couldn’t help feeling it was a bit of a sudden decision. After all, he’d known when Inez’s birthday would be for, well, years. She was a little more concerned when he let slip that Francesca had been behaving ‘quite weird’ lately. For John to notice someone was behaving ‘quite weird’ suggested to Cat that their behaviour might be rather beyond ‘quite weird’… On the other hand, of course, John could equally well be mistaken. When it came to personal relations, he wasn't always the brightest button in the jar. =/\= …I’ll let you know how things progress. Can you ... uhhh ... say bye to the others for me? =/\= “Umm, yeah sure. Look, John…” she paused. So many things she wanted to say and so many reasons not to say them, when it came right down to it. After a moment, she continued: “Have a safe journey, and I hope you have a great holiday with Inez and Fran. I’m sure they’ll both be thrilled to see you. Make sure you get them both a nice present, OK?” She added the last part, thinking to herself that John was possibly quite capable of turning up empty-handed. “And don’t worry about us here. We’ll manage not to blow the lab up before you come back. I know how much you enjoy doing that yourself,” she finished. =/\= Gotta go now. Keep the faith, eh? And don’t worry, I’ll be back. Poodle-tips! John-ster out. =/\= The link went dead and Cat sighed. Life in the Science Department would probably be a bit duller without John around for the next few weeks or perhaps months. But John hadn’t taken any leave for a long time, she knew. And she knew how much he missed Inez and Francesca, although he wasn’t one to talk about his own feelings. But his pride in his daughter was impossible for him to hide, and his black moods when the “mail” was delayed and there was no message from Fran were also obvious. So she hoped that he wouldn’t find things were too ‘weird’ when he got home. After a moment, she shook her head. Nothing she could do about it one way or the other. "Have you any plans for leave while we are docked?" She asked Cat struggling for conversation, Ilana often felt out of sorts when at these informal enviroments, it wasn't that she wasn't sociable like some recluse scientists, it was just she was only comfortable when she was in a working enviroment. (Reply Amari) (Posted By Joanna) (USS Spectre – Holodeck 2 – SciO, Ensign(jg) Catriona Macbeth – 14:31) "Have you any plans for leave while we are docked?" Ilana asked Cat. "Not really, I may see if I can visit my family but only if I can get enough leave to make the trip worthwhile. It's a long way to go just to spend a day or two and then have to turn round and travel back!" Ilana asked about John's daughter, and whether she lived on board the Spectre. Cat shook her head. "She lives on Earth with her mother, Francesca. They had a pretty rough time during the civil war, and then afterwards they felt it would be safer for Francesca and Inez to live on Earth. I think they live in San Francisco, or Fran comes from there, or something. John doesn't like to talk about personal stuff too much, but I know he misses Inez like hell." She grinned. "Probably Fran too although he'd probably rather walk barefoot over broken glass rather than admit it! If you ask me, Inez is probably the best thing that happened to John and he'd probably be a lot happier if they were here with him." Ilana shrugged, "My father was in Starfleet, he never approved of having any non-starfleet persons on his ship, once he was given a Galaxy class he turned the commision down, keeping to his Nova, he loved that ship right up until..." Ilana's voice trailed away and she turned to Amari. "Anyway lovely party you have here." Cat could recognise when someone changed the subject, and as Amari answered Ilana, Cat covertly studied the ACSO, wondering what happened after 'until...'. ~I guess we all have things we'd rather not talk about! But she seems like she'd appreciate a friend or two... I wonder...~ "I have an idea!" Cat exclaimed. "I plan to go shopping and spend a *lot* of credits. There's a guy here who makes the most fantastic shoes you ever saw - made to measure as well! And there's another shop where you can get some really lovely dresses - the kind of things you just can't replicate!" She grinned. "Can you tell I love to shop?" she asked Ilana."I have an idea! Why don't we spend a morning, no, better, a day on the starbase? We could look round the shops, have some lunch, generally have fun. What do you say, both of you?" she looked from Ilana to Amari. Oggie Marsh – 07:42) A beep alerted Oggie to the message that had just arrived and he quickly scanned it, his lips drawn into a thin line. He had expected that message ever since they had returned to the starbase. And finally it had arrived, calling him and Zia to a ‘meeting’ with Star Fleet Intelligence for a ‘quick’ de-briefing regarding the mission that they had just endured. Oggie grunted, then looked around his quarters. It was in an almost unused state apart from the holdall on the table that contained all of his possessions. He sighed as he picked up the bag and shook his head. “Showtime,” he murmured to himself as he checked the room for one more time, quite sure that it would be a while for him to return there, if ever. “Allons-y, monseingneur Oggie!” A weak smile played around is lips as he opened the door and stepped through. Always be prepared, that’s our motto.” “It is a good motto,” Zia conceded. “Even though I do not know what a ‘boy-scout’ is, or what you are prepared for.” She thought for a moment and then added, “It looks as though you are prepared to leave the ship,” she said soberly. “I hope you are not right because I do not want to leave and I do not want you to leave either.” (Reply Any, None) (Posted by Liz) (USS Spectre – Turbolift 2 – COUNS, Ensign Oggie Marsh – 07:49) “It looks as though you are prepared to leave the ship. I hope you are not right because I do not want to leave and I do not want you to leave either.” Oggie stared straight ahead and sighed. “Nor do I, my dear. But you cannot direct your own destiny. You have to follow the path that you find in front of yourself. And I fear, my path may lead me away. It may not, of course, and that would be a great relief but my experience tells me otherwise. But I cannot close my eyes to what the future might hold. Nor can you. Just keep your eyes open and your wits about you and play every scenario as it unfolds. Oh, and if we get separated, don’t worry. It will be temporary, for sure. It will be a time for ‘until later’, not ‘goodbye’.” Oggie sniffed. “Yes,” he continued. “Until later, not goodbye,” he said again this time a little bit louder as if to convince himself of it. (Reply Any) (Posted by Adrie) (Starbase 49 – Outside umbilical connection – COUNS, Ens. Oggie Marsh – 07:53) “I believe we are to go to the right. From memory there is a turbolift to take us to deck 67. Are you ok?” (Reply Zia, any). As they neared the turbolift, Oggie suddenly noticed the two man who were loitering at the doorway of it. It wasn’t the loitering itself, more the fact that they were both identically dressed, with dark brown pantalons and an olive green jacket. They were quite ... invisible in their common-ness. Oggie’s eyebrows furrowed as he quickened his step. “Be caref...” he started hissing to Zia, when a hand suddenly landed on his shoulder. He turned round to see the one who had touched him. It was another dark brown and olive green character, this time female with blond hair. The woman smiled, then without visible effort pushed Oggie away from the door. “Mister Marsh. Ricardo sends his best wishes.” Oggie stared at her as if she had suddenly sprouted three extra heads. “He would like to meet you again, but unfortunately a little crisis has emerged that requires a deft and diplomatic solution. A courier ship is waiting for you at pylon 17. You can not be late so we are to escort you there. Oh, and Ricardo has filed all required paperwork. There shouldn’t be anything obstructing you.” Oggie just watched the woman, dumbfounded. This was not what was supposed to happen, not this way, anyway. Ricardo was a pretend name, used by ... certain people who were working for the President but without any links to him, the Federation, Star Fleet or the government. That they used the first name of the President of the Federation showed that there were some links but not what links there were. Also Oggie was pretty sure that he had had no previous engagement with this secret cabal. ~Again?~ The female then turned to Zia. “Miss Kirrin. Ricardo hopes Ambassador Cha’Mirok is well? He remembers the discussions with your father with great fondness. It appears that your meeting with SFI has been postponed. Indefinitely. Please pass on Ricardo’s compliment to your father and if you could inform him that the offered payment was very generous but Ricardo has to decline. He may regard this as a gift to further strengthen the ties of friendship between us. Mister Marsh, are you ready?” Oggie looked at Zia, still dumbfounded. “Is she..” he started turning to the female, who shook her head. “It would be too early. Miss Kirrin has other ..... tasks.” Oggie looked at her under furrowed eyebrows. “May I then at least ...” he started but the female cut him short but nodding curtly then turning away to give Oggie and Zia some privacy. “My dear,” Oggie started, “It appears that your protection is much superior to mine or indeed Captain T’Vhor’s. Are you ok?” Zia straightened herself, almost to the point of standing at attention. “I am fine,” she said stoutly, if inaccurately. To be truthful the fact that Oggie had brought a holdall with him was making her more nervous than she had been at first about the debriefing. Oggie moved quickly towards the turbolift, and began to say something to Zia about being careful when he was suddenly stopped by a blond woman who grabbed him by the shoulder and pushed him away from the turbolift door. Zia hissed in surprise and stiffened. ~What is going on?~ The woman told Oggie that someone called Ricardo sent his best wishes. Zia thought he had an odd way of doing that, but before she could say anything the woman continued, telling Oggie that there was some kind of crisis that needed his help and that a courier ship was waiting for him! She added that this ‘Ricardo’, whoever he was, had filed all the paperwork and there would be nothing obstructing Oggie. Zia frowned. This was not, she was sure, supposed to be happening. She forced a smile which did not reach her eyes, a tactic which boded ill for the recipient. She noticed Oggie looking at her, with a dumbfounded expression on his face. Her own expression softened momentarily and she shook her head. “Is she..” Oggie began, turning to the blonde. “It would be too early. Zia took both his hands in hers, pressing something into his palm unobtrusively. “Listen, Oggie,” she said in a low tone, not trusting the female not to listen in even if she had turned away from them. “I have spoken to my father about what you have done for me. He was hoping to meet you here himself but it would seem that will not be possible now. I wish I had more time to explain but you are now,” she tried to think of the correct term in Anglish and failed. “You are now adopted into our family,” she finally said. “This is a, I think you call it a talisman ring, with our family crest. If you need help ever, you can call on my father and he will assist you as if you were his brother.” After a moment’s thought she added, “The one he likes, that is.” She looked at him seriously. “Oggie, it may not seem like much but I promise you, it is regarded as a great honour among my people and one which is not usually given to non-Rihannsu. And right now it is all I can give you. Suddenly she hugged him tightly. “I will miss you, Oggie,” she said. “And you will always be in my heart.” She looked at the woman, still with her back to them, and the two men standing near to the woman. “I will remember their faces and their words,” she said, her chin lifting slightly. ~And one day they may wish they had not done this,~ she added silently to herself. “Thei'khaiell ssuin hw'aenevha,” Zia said softly. “May there be wind to your wings. Seeing no-one approaching him, he turned and picked up his bag from the airlock. It was astounding how often 'urgent' deliveries where never so urgent when the delivery arrived at the destination. It had probably all to do with the people having different perspectives. The supply officers wanted to clean their books of all vessels that one officer might or might not have decided that it was good to have and the receiving officer who was required to fill all the right forms and put the thumb-prints on all the right places, knowing for sure that if they put a wrong print in the wrong place someone was going to ask him or her why Star Fleet decided to offload one of their surplus vessels onto them. Andreas shook his head then shrugged. He didn't really care as long as he could keep flying the 'surplus'. He didn't mind flying starships but unfortunately they all tended to be butt-heavy, badly set up and ready to go into a spin at a moment's notice. No wonder everybody kept on using computers to fly the slow beasts. And that didn't particularly tickle Andreas's fancies. So if there was ever a chance of flying the smaller craft, Andreas made sure his nose was several lengths in front. And as always he flew them 'au natural', with proper set up engines and with little if any computer assistance. Unfortunately from time to time, a vacancy was suddenly needed to be filled, even if the vacancy didn't really exist in reality and only in the mind of the person behind the computer. So now Andreas was looking for a person to offload his transfer padd to and to find out where he could find this slow juggernaut called Spectre. Andreas sighed but then shrugged. At least he would only be an assistant CONN-officer and they tended to be in charge of the secondary craft of a vessel rather than have to fly the brick. Especially with Andreas because officers tended not to want him back in the flying seat. He grinned. Now then, first things first. The courier ship. Now, if you knew that a vessel was brought in and you didn't want to be the one to accept it yourself, then what would you do? The grin grew bigger. Of course, inventories! Sliding his shades back onto his nose, Andreas looked round and then set off. He had a daily rutine that he had kept while he was on the Free Booster and he planned to keep going as much as possible while he was on the Spectre. The problem was that he had been slippinga bit as he had been settling into his new position. ~Okay lets work off the breakfast~ “Computer play Noah 45.” The computer beeped and the suddenly the room was filled with the rapid pulsing sound of what he could only explain as Ornara drum and base. He did not care what the words meant but he did not care all he needed was the rhythm which was fast. He began nodding to the beat as the music flowed over him. He had turned the up loud so that he could cocoon him self in its noise. He did not worry about wakening any one else as the room was sound proofed. He began to move through slow practiced movement that he had been taught years ago while at school. As the music sped up his moves became faster and faster. His moves became automatic as his body new where to go with out him thinking. He was not sure whether he felt the presence of some one else or saw the blur of motion out the corner of his eye. His body reacted instinctively as he turned and dropped under the punch. His hand darted out to block another in coming punch as his other hand snaked out for a retaliatory strike but his attacker had slipped out the way. He side stepped a kick that would have broken the knee cap if it can connected and slammed his hand into the attacker’s side. The attacker rolled with the punch and used the momentum to send a spinning kick his way. His kicks and punches merged with his blocks as he faugh his attacker back and forth across the holodeck. Then it happened he had punched hard aiming for the ribs, he realised that as soon as he had punched that it was a mistake and he had been tricked. His punch slammed into thin air which over balanced him. Time seamed to slow as he watched the returning attack come swinging in. It connected with him and in a split second he found him self on the floor. He looked up from the floor and had his first real look at his attacker and paused. Standing in front of him like some avenging worrier princess was Coleridge. She had an athletic looking female human body of roughly thirty years in age, with braded shoulder length black hair and she was wearing a while figure hugging dress. His mind took a moment process what he was seeing. “You are getting sloppy.” He stopped breathing heavily as he got up from the floor. “Coleridge what are you doing here. You should be on the Free Booster.” Coleridge gave a pout and put her hands on her hips. “What! you did you not miss me?” Noah rolled his eyes and shook his head. “Of course I missed you but you can not just appear here, you have duties with special operations.” “You are not the only one who can get a transfer you know.” Noah frowned. “What do you mean a transfer?” She spread her arms out wide and gave a big smile. Her cloths changed into a blue Starfleet uniform jumpsuit. “I am you new Emergency Medical Hologram.” “You can’t be an EMH you’re a tactical mission advisory artificial inelegance…” “Super-intelligent artificial intelligence if you don’t mind.” Noah rolled his eye s again as he carried on. “…you are not set up to be an EMH.” Coleridge gave a sad sigh. “Ow how little I am understood….” She tapped her head. “I can be a lot more then just a tactical advisor you know. I have down loaded the EMH protocols from star fleet medical as well as the medical data files. It was not complicated. Any way there was going to be an EMH up grade while you are at star base 49….. “ There was a slight pause a she looked innocently at him, “…..I just integrated my self in to the up grade protocol, down load in to the EMH program and here I am.” “But you just can’t go jumping around computer systems like that. The EMH is a very delicate system it’s not just something you can meander around in to. It’s supposed to be an emergency back up in case sickbay’s staff are over run or incapacitated.” Coleridge just shook her head. “Noah, Noah, you worry too much and you don’t seem to be grasping this concept. I have not damaged your precise EMH; I have become your EMH. With all its abilities and knowledge integrated into my matrix. I am probably the most advanced EMH in Starfleet.” Noah signed and nodded. “Okay but why are you here.” Coleridge smiled as she stepped forward her Starfleet uniform changes back to her while figure hugging dress as she placed her hands on his shoulder and looked into his eyes. “I missed you. We made a good team on the Free Booster and I like to have you around. I got lonely on my own.” A wide grin sprang across her face. “And anyway who else can keep you out of trouble.” Noah gave a slight laugh as he shook his head again. ”Your just my own personal stalker that’s what you are.” “Yep and I am the best looking stalker around.” Noah laughed at then and nodded. “Come on I need to get to sickbay and start my shift shortly. I better get changed and ready.” “Not a problem I will see you in Sickbay.” And with that Coleridge vanished leaving him alone in the holodeck “Well this is going to be a fun deployment.” He muttered to him self as he headed for the door. "I have found a worthy craft, a Belker Z-1. Basically a metal pipe with the aft four fifth filled with motors and engines. Cockpit is in the front together with some controls. Apparently this craft was designed when the designer was totally drunk, but I personally doubt that story. He just wanted to create the ultimate racing ship and I think he came quite close. Unfortunately he didn't have enough space to put all currently required safety features in. The inertial dampeners are sketchy to say the least and many pilots have been crushed by gravitational forces when they tried to manoeuver so we will have to wear pressure suits. The engines are the most powerful he could fit in and the controls are oversensitive because they take use part of the engine power. Not the best combination." Andreas looked at her. "By law I have to inform you that seventy five people have died flying a Belker Z-1. There was only one production run of eighty five craft. Seventy eight craft have crashed. But I have flown Belker's before, three times in fact, the second and third time with a passenger. This would be my fourth flight and the current record is three." Andreas slid the gloves further back and tested the movements of his fingers. "We can take a more .... forgiving craft, if you wish. In fact it would be the proper response. I am close to browning my pants when I even think of flying one of these. It will take all my concentration during the whole flight. But I know I *can* do it and I *WILL* fly the Saab for a fourth time. But it does not have to be now." He had arrived early by accident so he thought he would have a quick coffee before boarding his new ship. With the Mith out of action for a while, he had been assigned to the Spectre until father notice. This would be the third ship he had served on in his Starfleet career, though it was something he did not expect. He had always liked the Mith and was sorry to see it out of action for the time being. He was not very keen on serving on ships build for combat. Sure, the Spectre was a multi-purpose ship, but the reason he had applied to serve on the Mith was because it was the fleets primary science and exploration ship. He had applied for that transfer after the Federation came into contact with the Waagoshin, a Bata Quadrant fox-like species. Kenny was on the Hades at that time and the Waagoshin had attacked them. Kenny had been involved in several brutal fights with the aliens, and at lest one involving hand-to-hand combat, in which the Waagoshin had the advantage, having natural claws. Only Kenny’s Starfleet combat training had saved him from being killed in all the fights he had been part of that day, both hand-to-hand and in a fire fight. It was also the day in which he had killed someone for the first time, namely, several Waagoshin. Although it was in self defence, it was an action he hoped that he would never have to repeat. Regardless of the reason for killing a person, the first time still stuck with him. He was a scientist, not a solider. That’s why he had been transferred to the Mith. Still, he was not the only one being transferred from the Mith to the Spectre. There was Ensign M'ELissa and Lieutenant Jeremiah Hindenburgher coming over too. Plus, he would be working with Lieutenant Jezebel Trelawney again so he would have some connection with his former crew. Kenny had been Chief Science Officer on the Mith and in the short time that Trelawney had been on, she had shown great skills and workmanship. He looked forward to working with her again. Now he was on another ship, and he was just hoping he would not be involved in combat again. However, it was not something that he should worry about. He finished his coffee and made his way to the briefing room. (No reply needed) (Posted by Gavin Work) (Starbase 49 - Flying Around Docking Bay 9 - ACEO, Ensign Remae Ktell - 12:00) Remae was inside one of the smaller pods, flying around the Spectre. Six months waiting at the Starbase had given him one singular determined thought, to get into space as soon as possible... he had been going out of his mind with not moving but also he had spent most of his time reacquainting himself with his ship. It always had seemed that circumstances had brought him back to this ship and the way the ship had called to him over the past few months had cemented this relationship. Not only did he now know every nut, bolt and rivet of the ship, he had assisted in the number of upgrades, big, small, insignificant and significant to the ship ranging from advances in warp propulsion, computer access and even new door hinges hadn't escaped his personal scrutiny. Maybe obsession was a better way to describe it, what else was there for him? His career had gone backwards, forwards, changed dimensions and finally returned to where he had started... with only one alteration, this time as an Ensign, he wasn't a Counsellor but an Engineer. It wasn't unheard of him spending long nights inside one of the warp nacelles cleaning out the plasma grids or swinging in his now customary hammock that was slung up between an Engineering Console and the warp core... many an hour he had spent swinging there, simply listening to the warp core pulsating away. Of course, many attempts were made... go and see family, friends, take a break, get a new hobby and so it went on. He was never far from the Engine Room of the Spectre. Recently, things were happening, the ship was being prepared for departure. He had a new group of personnel were coming over from another ship, the USS Mithrandir and that some of them would no doubt end up in Engineering. He didn't mind, more hands to help the better. One could almost feel the strange tension in the room. The crew were all somewhat abruptly removed and relocated, and (in Kurt's case) filed into this manifest wherever there was room. Kurt looked down at his coffee. It was after noon and he was on cup number four, but coffee seemed like it would have little effect that day. He had spent a long and uneasy night brushing up on his astrophysics, chemistry, and xenobiology. He took another sip, before giving up on it. ~maybe some jumping jacks?~ Finally the doors to to the room parted and in walked a small dark haired commander carrying a pile of PADDS. As quickly as she entered Admiral Jordan addressed her and scurried out the door barely giving it thirty seconds to close. "Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen," the woman finally said "As Admiral Jordan said, I am Commander Hoshimi Tsukawa, First Officer of the USS Spectre. Captain T'Vhor would have liked to be here to greet you himself but he has been called to a meeting about our upcoming mission. I'm sure all your details are here, but I think it will be better if you all introduce yourselves to me one at a time as I say your name." She smiled. "Lieutenant Jeremiah Hindenburgher?" the counsellor seemed to be taken by surprise. “Uhhh, Jerry if you please, Ma’am." He seemed to blurt out before clearing his throat. “Our duty is to serve, Commander, and you may rest assured that you will see the same service from us that we have shown on the Mithrandir. In whatever capacity Star Fleet decides we should serve. We are *all*” he paused and looked around the table. “*all* Star Fleet officers and our word is our bond.” "I believe you will be our new Counsellor. You'll have an assistant counsellor, Ensign Elani Caras, and you will be reporting to Commander Noah, the CMO." she seemed to not even hear the counsellor's speech and continued down the list getting awkward responses all around, until... "... Ensign Kurt Palmer -" she searched the room for him - "has been assigned as CSO." Kurt gave a quick nod, to avoid the word vomit that seemed to be contagious in the briefing room. Commander Tsukawa finished up with her introductions and added "I'm sure this is difficult for you all, not only a new ship and new crewmates but new positions for many of you. And I'm well aware that none of you requested this transfer, which doesn't make it any easier. But when we signed up to Starfleet we all knew that this kind of thing could happen and I'm sure you're all professional enough to take it in your stride." She passed out the stack of PADDs as she continued "Each PADD contains a plan of the Spectre, with your assigned quarters marked on it, also your departments..." ~Great, I cant wait to be confused by these later...~ Kurt was never great with understanding deck plans, and tried to avoid them whenever possible. The commander smiled again and explained their new captain would like to meet with them when he comes aboard. Kurt felt a knot forming in his stomach. His career was nothing but surprises thus far, but he felt extremely anxious about this one. (reply, any) ((post by Cody)) (Starbase 49 - Briefing Room 3 - Spectre FO, Commander Hoshimi Tsukawa - 12:05) The Spectre had been at Starbase 49 for the last 6 months. Not only had essential repairs and maintenance been carried out, but Hoshimi was aware that there had been some modifications made to certain ship's systems. She had been told that this was in preparation for their next mission, the outline of which had been explained to her by T'Vhor. The Captain was even now in talks about that mission, and Hoshimi hoped that she would know more about the details soon. All the Spectre crew had been given extended shoreleave at one point or another in the last 6 months, and some had taken the opportunity to visit family and friends or to have them pay a visit at the Starbase. There had also been several transfers of officers and crew off the Spectre, and now Hoshimi was about to meet several officers who had been summarily transferred from the USS Mithrandir. She had been given 48 hours notice of their transfer and had managed to make the necessary preparations just in time. She wondered how those officers would feel, having been told at short notice they were being transferred to another ship. ~If it was me, I wouldn't be too happy about it!~ she thought as the doors to Briefing Room 3 opened and she walked in carrying a small pile of PADDS. Before she could say anything, an Admiral greeted her, introducing himself as Admiral Jordan and seeming a little flustered as he presented the senior officers of the Mithrandir who were being transferred to the Spectre. He added that he himself had new orders to take the Mithrandir on a special mission, then passed a PADD to Hoshimi. "It's all here," he said, then abruptly left the room, leaving Hoshimi standing with the PADD in her hand and a group of officers, not one of whose name she had been given, staring at her. "Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen," she said, sitting down and placing the PADDs on the table. "As Admiral Jordan said, I am Commander Hoshimi Tsukawa, First Officer of the USS Spectre. Captain T'Vhor would have liked to be here to greet you himself but he has been called to a meeting about our upcoming mission." She gestured to the Admiral's PADD, which she had laid in front of her. "I'm sure all your details are here, but I think it will be better if you all introduce yourselves to me one at a time as I say your name." She smiled. "Lieutenant Jeremiah Hindenburgher?" (reply Kudrow, M'Elissa) "Lieutenant Kenneth McKenzie and Lieutenant Jezebel Trelawney? You are assigned to our Science Department as ACSO and Xenobiologist respectively. Ensign Kurt Palmer -" she looked around the table until she had identified him - "has been assigned as CSO." Neither by tone nor expression did Hoshimi betray whether or not she found any of this at all unusual. Unlike the officers around the table she was aware of the reasons behind it and the mission they were about to undertake. (Reply Palmer, McKenzie) "Ensign Gryffen Pendragon?" Lieutenant Kudrow, I've been informed that your son will be accompanying you, so I have also marked on your PADD the location of the nursery and childcare facilities." Tsukawa turned him both him and Trelawney and spoke: “Lieutenant Kenneth McKenzie and Lieutenant Jezebel Trelawney? You are assigned to our Science Department as ACSO and Xenobiologist respectively. Ensign Kurt Palmer has been assigned as CSO.” Kenny nodded. “Acknowledged.” Once Commander Hoshimi had finished the roster, she looked around and spoke: “I'm sure this is difficult for you all, not only a new ship and new crewmates but new positions for many of you. He was not keen with moving ship again but he understood it was required at this time. He knew that one of his main duties right now would be to get to know the rest of crew, mostly the other Science personnel under and above him. “I believe Captain T'Vhor would like to see you all as soon as possible, and he hopes to be back on board the Spectre by 14:00. He looked over to the other Mithrandir .... no, *ex*-Mithrandir officers and saw the same look of surprise that he was sure that his face showed. ~What ....~ he started to think then sighed. Strangely enough he felt most sorry for Jordan. He had been growing as a CO the longer they had been on the Mithrandir but now? Jerry sighed again as he considered his own options, not that there were many. "Lieutenant Jeremiah Hindenburgher?" ~Uhhhh?~ Jerry looked up and saw the Commander looking at him. “Uhhh, Jerry if you please, Ma’am.” Jerry shot her a weak smile then looked around the table again at his fellow comrades. He cleared his throat. “Our duty is to serve, Commander, and you may rest assured that you will see the same service from us that we have shown on the Mithrandir. In whatever capacity Star Fleet decides we should serve. We are *all*” Jerry fell silent and looked around the table. “*all* Star Fleet officers and our word is our bond.” Jerry felt a little stupid saying these bog-standard sayings but he hoped it would help the others, even if a little bit, in dealing with their own confusion. "I believe you will be our new Counsellor. You'll have an assistant counsellor, Ensign Elani Caras, and you will be reporting to Commander Noah, the CMO." His tour on the Mithrandir had been brief, but he had aquitted himself well, controlled and organised the boarding party onto the Valkyrie. A new challenge, in a larger security team than the Mithrandir. He was a soldier at heart, and wanted the chance to prove himself in a combat situation within Starfleet. His special force team on the Mithrandir had been in its infancy, and he hoped he could give it new life on board the spectre. She handed the padd to her superior officer and flinched once she realized what she had done. Again she fell victim to word vomit as she had just spoken out of turn and at an inopportune time. "Excuse my bluntness ma'am" Mila stepped back in line with the other transfer officers kicking herself in her head for not managing her eagerness properly. (Reply FO) (Posted by Darryl McDaniel) (Starbase 49 - Briefing Room 3 – FO, Commander Hoshimi Tsukawa - 12:13) The new Counsellor had given a little speech, no doubt hoping to inspire his fellow officers. Glancing round the table Hoshimi couldn’t help but notice that most of them seemed to be taking events more or less in their stride, with the exception of the former CEO of the Mithrandir whose tail was twitching as though it had an electrical current running through it. ~I hope s/he’s not going to make trouble,~ Hoshimi thought. Transfers could be difficult all round and especially where there was a change in rank or position but it never helped to bring resentment to your new ship. It only made things more difficult. Jerry, as Hindenburgher had asked to be called, grinned as Hoshimi mentioned his new head of department. “I am a bit too long in the tooth to be called new, Commander, but I appreciate the trust. Commander Noah? I think we will get along well, as long as he isn’t into shipbuilding, Ma’am.” Hoshimi looked a little blank as the reference went over her head. “No, Jerry, I don’t believe his background involves shipbuilding,” she said seriously. She moved on to Ensign M’Elissa, who said nothing, and Lieutenant Kudrow, who made up for the ensign’s silence with a short speech. "Ma'am, if I may. I took the liberty of reviewing the Spectre's roster and noticed that the engineering team was well staffed before our arrival. I would like to submit my transfer to the operations department. This padd contains my prior experience as assistant operations coordinator on board Starbase Geneva." Hoshimi took the PADD and glanced through it. "Excuse my bluntness ma'am," Kudrow added. Hoshimi smiled at the lieutenant, who seemed to be regretting her eagerness for some reason. “Thank you, Lieutenant. You certainly seem to be well qualified. I agree, we are well-staffed in Engineering and with your experience I think we could certainly use you in Ops. I’ll discuss it with the Captain but I can’t see there being a problem. It’s good to see that you’ve been so proactive,” she added, genuinely pleased that Kudrow was apparently taking the transfer as an opportunity. (reply Kudrow iyw) “Ensign Hank Stevens,” Hoshimi continued, “You have also been assigned to us as a Senior Engineering Officer. I hope you’ll all soon settle in,” she added to the engineers. “You will find our Engineering Department has a very experienced and professional team, from the CEO and ACEO down to the enlisted crew. I’m sure they’ll all be happy to help you find your feet around the ship, as it were.” (reply Stevens, any) Hoshimi then moved on to the Science staff, who were also more or less silent. She noticed that Palmer seemed a little uncomfortable, but at least he gave a nod when she mentioned his assignment as CSO. Trelawney looked happy enough but it was hard to guess how McKenzie was reacting since his facial expression remained completely neutral and he said nothing. Ensign Pendragon also seemed to be regarding his transfer with equanimity although in common with many security officers (at least those Hoshimi was familiar with) he didn’t say much. His expression, however, seemed to indicate that he regarded it with some degree of acceptance, perhaps also seeing it as bringing new challenges. It was, therefore, with some degree of relief that Hoshimi found no one apparently had any additional questions, and she stood up. “I think then that it’s time you all made your acquaintance with your new ship,” she said. “If you will all follow me?” (Reply Any, All) (Posted by Liz) (USS Spectre - Engineering - CEO, Ensign Remae Ktell - 12:30) Another inspection completed, Remae has returning to the Engine Room and was running a simulation on the warp field, he didn't want any mistakes when they finally left and got under way. The FO nodded permission, and Harper handed the PADD back to M’Elissa. “Welcome aboard, Ensign,” he said politely. "Computer, lights." he directed toward the ceiling. The computer chimed in acknowledgement and the lights dimmed on. The lights revealed slightly more spacious quarters than what he had grown accustom to aboard the Mithrandir. He look a couple steps toward his new desk and tossed his PADD on to it. He looked around again, and the door chime sounded. "come." Kurt said turning his attention to the door. An officer in a gold uniform entered with Kurt's belongings. They exchanged pleasantries and the officer excused himself. Kurt flipped open his small cargo container. He didn't have much to unpack, but nonetheless he had no desire to start. He noticed a pair metallic cans at the bottom of the container and reached in. He pulled one out and read the label: METAL WALL EMULSION -FLAMINGO PINK- Kurt chuckled, and looked back down in the crate. He noticed a note attached to the side. It was from some of his former colleagues. 'Thought this might come in handy. Enjoy the new assignment. - Crewman Livet, Crewman Jamison and Nurse Beam' Kurt smiled, hoisted himself to his feet and moved the comtainer to his desk. Also probably a much reduced number of crew. Hmmmm, less people, same job. Makes you need everyone to pull their own weight, I would have thought.” He seemingly absentmindedly stroked one of the ship status screens. “Uhhh, M’Elissa? A word to the wise? It’s not their fault for what Star Fleet has decided to do with you or the Mithrandir. I am pretty sure that for a while nothing here will look as good as on the old vessel. But the old vessel is that. Old. Old as in ex. The Spectre is our home now. And I do not particularly like people bad-mouthing my home. Even if it is new. Don’t fight it. Accept it. It will make things a lot easier.” Jerry smiled. “Oh, and if you have a spare moment? I managed to ...... liberate the gel pack of the replicator in my old counsellor’s office. "And I do not particularly like people bad-mouthing my home. Even if it is new. Don't fight it. Accept it. He missed what was asked next regarding gel packs as he walked over to meet the new arrivals. Jerry turned to face the man who had spoken to him and shot him a glance. "I didn't know there was a limit set for looking like an idiot. Thanks for the warning." Jerry grinned. "Ktell, wasn't it? Call me Jerry. And yes, I am supposed to guard their little souls. Even if they don't think they have one. All in a day's work, you know?" "I am afraid you may have your work cut out for you.", Ktell responded then paused. "I hope you can settle in, let me know if I can help... where are you heading?" Jerry frowned. "You know? I'm not really sure. I wanted to make sure that we didn't ... uhh ... well, the intention was good, even if the end result was less than I hoped for. But now? I assume that the others have now gone their merry ways. There's been a bit of upheaval, you know? People losing their home, their position, their role in life." Jerry sighed. "Some will cope better than others. But perhaps I should give them the benefit of the doubt." Jerry shrugged. "So, as I see it, I have nowhere to go to in a hurry. Yet. Problem is that I seem to have lost my padd. I had it one moment and the next ... gone. You wouldn't happen to know how to get to the Counsellor's office, would you? Might even take me there? I've got a gel-pack but I'm not too sure if it will fit if it is a different type." He concluded with a question that Remae actually knew the answer to. Engineers always preferred being given a job to complete rather than being told what to do. "Sure thing Jerry and don't worry about your gel-pack, they are all interchangeable. Just about any gel-pack will fit in any system, and it will learn by itself pretty quickly what is what.", he said heading out of the main door of Engineering, "Follow me." And before you say that you’re an Ensign now, let me say that you don’t need to be a Captain to be a Captain, if you catch my drift. We’ve had Commander Captains and Admiral Captains, so I guess we can have an Ensign Captain as well. Just one, mind you. And you may not be in command anymore but I have had the ‘pleasure’ of serving under Captains who didn’t even have an iota of command in their whole body, so that can’t be the deciding factor either. They talked for a moment waiting for the door to open, perhaps Elani wasn't it but the thought of sampling some of the meals on that pack had the Bajoran thinking. "Care to ... uhhhh... sample the counselling material with me?", he asked and Remae replied, "For sure... I've recently begun to return to my Bajoran roots and returned to eating Bajoran food, perhaps there is something more interesting than the usual Bajoran fare on that pack?", he asked and they set a date for the meal. He was supposed to meet Lieutenant Trelawney to tour the Spectre's science facilities, but Kurt thought he would take a peek at his office first. "lights" he commanded. The lighting came up slightly, but enough for Kurt to see that the small office had been turned into an equipment cemetery; every flat surface seemed to have something on it. Kurt double checked his PADD to make sure this was his assigned office. It seemed to be... "Computer, increase brightness." The computer chirped negatively as if to say 'nope.' Kurt repeated himself "Computer, increase brightness." Same response. Kurt let out a long frustrated breath before dropping his case on a nearby chair. As he did the chair swung around knocking a partially disassembled tricorder to the ground. Annoyed, he stared at it for a moment before flipping open his case and pulling out a couple PADDs. He skimmed through both, and clicked the case shut. Kurt took a couple steps towards the door, turned back and glanced at the chair. He shook his head and moved it a little ways back from the desk (for safe measure) and exited the room. Kurt continued down the corridor a few meteres and stopped at the first door on his left. He straightened out his uniform and peered at the door sign. 03- OFFICE TO CHIEF SCIENCE OFFICER Kurt frowned and took another look at his map. He rotated the PADD a few times and strained his neck from side to side. He looked back at the door, scratched his head and took a look down the corridor in either direction. He took another step forward and the door glided open. Kurt stepped through and the door hissed closed behind him. Life here wasn’t the same without John to liven things up although she liked the Spectre and her workmates. She hoped there would be some interesting characters among the transferees from the Mithrandir. “Excuse me?” a voice recalled her from her thoughts and she looked round to see a red-haired lieutenant looking at her hopefully. “Yes?” Cat said, wondering if this was one of the new folk. Her curiosity was soon answered as the woman introduced herself as Jezebel Trelawney and asked where she could find the CSO’s office as she was supposed to meet the CSO there. Cat smiled and held out her hand, which Trelawney shook. “Catriona, but my friends call me Cat, Macbeth,” she said. “I'm a linguist. You’ll find the CSO’s office just down that wee corridor there.” Jezebel thanked her, and headed off in the direction Cat had indicated. Minutes later a large dog-like creature padded into the Science Department, sniffed around and then also headed in the direction of the CSO’s office. ~Oh wow, a Dirian!~ Cat thought to herself. She’d heard there was a Dirian on the Mithrandir from one of the crew who’d had it from a Starbase engineer who’d had it from the Starbase Quatermaster’s Office, but she hadn’t dared to hope that the Dirian would be posted here on the Spectre. ~What a chance, to learn a new language!~ (reply any, none needed) (Posted by Liz) (USS Spectre - Deck 4, CSO's office - CSO Ensign Kurt Palmer - 13:41) Kurt took a quick look around his new office. Great start~ After a game of which PADD goes with which he moved his case off his desk. Then, leaning over he spun his terminal around, and called up the department roster. He felt comfortable spending a free moment in *this* office. Kurt moved around his desk to the replicator and ordered a coffee. As he did it occured to him that he should call his ACSO.... Her head moved from side to side as she walked, constantly sniffing the air, trying to find her directions. It didn’t help her, unfortunately, as the air in this corridor smelled as nauseating as it had done on the other metal-ball-that-flies-in-space. The air was dry, reeking of oils, metals and traces of many body-odours. There were many scents in the air, but none that lingered, adding to her confusion. She sneezed once because of the lack of moisture in the air and shook her snout wildly. Finally she had enough of it all and she sat down on her hind legs, her front ones still extended. Her right paw came up to hook her opposable claw on the right paw behind the strap of the bag that she had slung across her left ‘shoulder’. It took her a few attempts to hook the strap and she lay down extending the paw over her head to take the bag off. She sat up again when she had finally managed to get the bag off and shook herself as if she was drying herself. She then stepped onto the bag with her right paw and tried to unzip the bag with her left side-claw. She growled when her attempts remained fruitless until she had had enough of it and used her teeth to pull on the zipper, keeping the bag down with both paws. She yanked the bag open and stuck her snout in it, feeling for the PADD that was in there. She gently bit it when she found it and she slowly pulled it out of the bag. Luckily the PADD was lying now the right side up and she used her right side-claw to access the command panel until the required information was retrieved and she stared at the screen, looking at the ‘lines-that-meant-walls’ for a while and looking up to translate that into an actual position. She looked up from the PADD at the walls surrounding her, looking for the strange markings that were strewn about the hard walls then back at the PADD until she was relatively sure where she was and where she needed to go. She let out a sigh and scratched her right ear with her right hind-paw until the itching had relented a little. She looked down at the bag and the PADD and decided that she couldn’t bother with trying to place the PADD in the bag and sling the bag over her shoulder again so she left that fiendish device, picked the PADD up with her snout and walked off on all fours. Should be interesting, I think! Anyone else joining us for our unofficial tour?” she asked He opened his mouth to respond and the door chime sounded again. "come in" he spoke The doors parted and Kurt could only see a giant mound of fur enter. It was surprising how chance could interfere with everyday life. There he had been, trying to find a way to gel the two crews together when he had received a call from the starbase with a request for help regarding a recently returned crew-member. Of course, he had assisted them as best as he could and taken things as seriously as he was supposed to take them. Not that it was that hard as the crew-member involved had been quite lucid in her description of the events that had come to pass even though the premises of a shuttle going for walkabouts on a planet’s surface was hard to grasp. For how long? =/\= Jerry thought for a second. “Let’s say a couple of days. Two or three tops.” =/\= OK, I’ll try to arrange it. Reason? =/\= Jerry grinned. “Counselling therapy as demanded by the ship’s Chief Counsellor. If need be you can use the counselling crew down here for leverage. They will oblige, they owe me one.” The other side went silent for a while until the fly-boy came back with: =/\= OK, I’ll arrange it. I’ll let you know where and when. Schliegler out. =/\= Jerry nodded and grinned. All he had to get now was a crew. And he knew exactly where to get them. Unfortunately he still had to wait for the acknowledgement from Andreas before he finalised everything. But that would be a question of when, not if. He decided to make good use of that time. He stopped and looked around to find his way back to the ship. (Reply Any) (Posted by Adrie) (USS Spectre - Deck 4, Kurt's office - CSO Ensign Kurt Palmer - 15:20) Kurt tapped his terminal off and stretched his arms behind his head. He couldn't help but think this was becoming to close to what he tried to escape on earth. He let out a sigh, leaned forward and slipped a PADD out of a pile on his desk. He began flicking through the information and reviewing the duty shifts for the department. At this point Kurt was just trying to make heads or tails of the organization of the Spectre's science department and seeing where he would fit into the equation. He neatly placed the PADD in a different pile and went on to the next. The terminal flashed on his desk. Kurt looked up, it was a message from Jerry. There was something comforting about receiving a message from him. Kurt ran the message. "...It’s going to be cold, dark and airless where we are going. Just so you know.” the message finished. ~well, this would be different.~ Kurt was torn between staying put and finishing work that needed to be done, and going on a mission and meeting some of the crew. He put his PADD down and reviewed the counsellor's message a second time. As he did, Kurt jumped suddenly at a loud clunking overhead. He stood and peered upwards. The lights dflickered. Kurt made his way to the door and peered out into the corridor. Everything seemed fine out here he thought. As he took a step back into his office he noticed a severe temperature difference between the corridor and his office. ~you've got to be kidding.~ It was around eight to ten degrees warmer in his office than the rest of the ship. He tapped the wall panel in his office with no result. Rolling his eyes Kurt tapped his commbadge. "Palmer to engineering, there's a malfunction with the environmental controls in my office. Can you send someone up at your earliest convenience?" (reply, engineering, any) ((post by Cody)) (USS Spectre - Counselling Office - COUNS, Lt (jg), Jerry Hindenburgher - 15:30) “Computer! Record and prepare to send the following message to all senior staff of the USS Spectre. Message reads: Hi all, a mysterious event has emerged on a planet not too far away. I promised someone that I would find out what happened there and I would welcome your assistance in doing so. I can not say too much at the moment but it will involve us leaving the ship for a day or two and do a planetary investigation. The command crew of the Spectre have been informed and approve of me asking you for your assistance. If you want to help me, please make your way to pylon 34D, deck 53 on the starbase where a vessel will be waiting for us. Look for the courier ship USS Maracaibo. We plan to leave the base at eighteen hundred hours. I hope you won’t be late. Jerry Hindenburgher. Oh, I am afraid that the exploration will have to be done with environmental suits. It’s going to be cold, dark and airless where we are going. Just so you know.” Jerry read through the message then pressed the send icon whilst nodding. That was step 1 out of the way. "Palmer to engineering, there's a malfunction with the environmental controls in my office. Can you send someone up at your earliest convenience?" After a long pause a female officer came through on the other end. =/\=Petty Officer Evans here, Sir. I’ll be up in a few minutes.=/\= The call closed, and Kurt took a seat back at his desk. ~where was I?~ He unzipped his black and grey uniform jacket slightly and started fanning himself with one of his idle PADDs. About ten minutes later the door chime sounded and in bounded... “Petty Officer Evans, Sir, come to check out your environmental controls,” she immediately set to work. “When did you first notice the problem?” He glanced at the chronometer at the top of his wall display. "maybe 20 minutes ago.... There was some sort of loud noise up there..." he gestured upwards. And trailed off as he really didn't know how to describe a technical thing this. (reply, Evans) He blinked... "and I'm assuming that's not good?" (reply, Evans) ((post by Cody)) (USS Spectre – Engineering – EO, Petty Officer Cordelia Evans - 15:31) =^= Palmer to engineering, there's a malfunction with the environmental controls in my office. Can you send someone up at your earliest convenience? =^= Cordelia had finished her assigned tasks and logged her reports for the CEO when the call came in. For once she wasn’t working the graveyard shift and she was sorry because it meant she had to be around the new ACEO who never seemed satisfied with anything done by anyone. Cordelia had got the distinct impression that the new ACEO, Ensign M’Elissa, thought the Spectre a mess and the entire engineering department from the CEO down a bunch of incompetents who couldn’t be trusted to wipe their own noses. She felt sorry for Remae, who after all was the new ACEO’s boss, and sorrier still for Rydan since he had to work with the newcomer too. And perfectionist as Rydan was, Cordelia thought he would find it difficult to be constantly made to feel that whatever he did it just wasn’t good enough and had to be redone by M’Elissa hirself. Cordelia waited a moment to see if M’Elissa would pick up the call from the CSO but s/he seemingly ignored it, so Cordelia picked it up herself. “Petty Officer Evans here, Sir. I’ll be up in a few minutes.” Grabbing a repair kit, she exited Engineering, secretly glad to be out of range of the ACEO. Can you send someone up at your earliest convenience? =^= Remae heard the message come in and he was gratified to hear one of Engineers take the call and arrange for repairs, he smiled to himself. Although Remae had been living out of the CEO's Office for the past several months, it wasn't officially his so he had used it for a dumping ground, PADDs, parts, tools, it was all over the place so it was time for an effort to clean it up. Even more so now that there was a few extra hands on deck to help deal with the Engineering duties. The computer terminal was beeping under a pile of junk but it caught Remae's eye and he opened the message that was sent in from Jerry. 'Look for the courier ship USS Maracaibo. We plan to leave the base at eighteen hundred hours.', Remae read to himself as he absorbed the message and then acknowledged it saying he would come along but he also sent an additional messages to the engineering staff to make sure they were all aware of where he was going. She sent a quick reply saying she was interested and made a note of when and where the meeting was. She wondered if Kurt and Kenneth would come along too; she thought it might be a chance to get to know some of their new crewmates. Ilana Grey too, Jezebel thought the other ACSO might enjoy the trip as well. After a moment’s thought she sent them all a message directly to their workstations. There was no one there at the moment and as they were not going into combat the possibility of new patients were slim. ~This could be rather fun. Some thing different for a change~ He tapped his comm badge. “Dr Noah to Consoler Hindenburgher. I would like to come along on your little mystery trip. I’ll will be there on the USS Maracaibo in a while.” (Reply Any) (Posted by Robbie) (USS Maracaibo – Observation Lounge - COUNS, Lt (jg), Jerry Hindenburgher – 17:55) Jerry looked at all the crew that had come and where now mulling around in the lounge, apart from the ones that had come early and found themselves an unoccupied chair. He grinned. “Thanks all, I think we can start. The planet I was talking about is this ....” Jerry keyed a command in the screen before him and the lounge window turned into a computer screen and showed the planet. “Magelhera 17,” Jerry continued, “the outermost planet of the neighbouring system. The planet is orbiting the sun in a very elliptical orbit. At the moment she is travelling towards the sun and will reach her closest point to the sun in 15 years. It spent 65 years getting closer to the sun and in fifteen years it will move away from the sun for 80 years. If the planet ever had any atmosphere then the sun would have burnt it off on the closest passes. The planet is just a rock in space, nothing more, nothing less. The only reason that people are interested in it is because of a most remarkable aspect. The planet is known for a set of caves, all circular, non-branding caves. Geologists are at a loss as how to explain the uniform shape of all of the 15,000 caves on that planet. They have done plenty of calculations, of course, but none has led to even a glimmer of an explanation." Jerry nodded at the screen. "It's an enigma, all right. *BUT* it's not the reason for us to go. Stories have emerged about the planet being plagued with earthquakes, yet the geologists assure everybody that since the planet is lacking a liquid core there can be no tectonic plates and therefore no earthquakes. Interesting? Probably if you are into that kind of thing. But what staggers me, and others, is that the planet makes shuttles walk over the surface. The latest visitor to the planet told me that when she visited it and did a survey of one of the caves, she experienced three earthquakes, one lasting an hour or so and when she left the cave, her shuttle was gone. It took her seventeen hours to find it back. The planet's rock formations and mineral contents make scanning very difficult. But when she did find it, it was three miles away from where she left it, namely next to the cave entrance. I ... uhhh.. promised her that I would find out why her shuttle had gone walkabouts. She has left me some details on how to identify the cave in question." Jerry looked around. "And that is basically it, a mystery, wrapped into an enigma. Any questions?" I can’t see a reason for it though, seems a bit odd all round.” (Reply Palmer, McKenzie, Grey, any present at the Maracaibo meeting, any) (posted by Liz) (USS Maracaibo - Observation Lounge - CEO, Ensign Remae Ktell - 18:09) The Bajoran had listened to the mission brief, sounded interesting and he was looking forward to a little adventure. A few questions came in and he carefully listened to each one as the details were hammered out. (Reply from Any) (Posted by Anthony Keen) (USS Spectre - Deck Four, Chief Science Officer’s Office - ACScio Ensign JG Ilana Grey - 18:08) Ilana walked into the office her mind stretched and bedraggled she had been running around for the last few days in a daze while they were at the Starbase trying to get everything organized, she had found an additional twelve requisition orders from other science departments on her desk. She had attempted to get the star base to sign off on them however it appeared resources were stretched thin, She desperately hoped she could get that Liskens request through. Moving to her office just off to the side of the the chiefs she slumped down on the desk, she looked at the computers they weren't as powerful as the machines in the labs, she wished she could spend more time in the lab studying her own theories. This wasn't what she had expected when she had signed up with starfleet, a mass of padd's crowded half of her desk. She had heard about an away team heading to a small planet or something but she knew she would have no time to sign up on that expedition. She picked up the top padd. Another requisition request. The issue she always felt was that each of the sciences considered there requests more important than any other department, if she let them all have their way there would be no room on the Spectre for the crew! Slowly but surely she made her way through the requests dismissing out of hand those that were luxuries or nice to haves. The only one that probably wasn't as necessary but she really wanted was a requisition for the new tricorder series, She had seen one at the Academy but had never got to use it, she placed the order for a dozen. It wasn't extravagant and would be enough to supply any away team. She looked with longing across at one of her personal research padds, How she wanted to be back in the lab studying. Finally clearing her in-tray and recycling the remaining padds for distribution she headed out into the hallway. This late in the afternoon she always found the halls slightly less crowded. She wondered briefly what Cat was up to and wondered if she might be able to get together for that shopping trip they had discussed. She knew she needed some new clothes. "Ilana to Ensign Macbeth" Ilana said walking towards the ships lounge. (Reply Cat) "I was just wondering if your busy or would be able to catch up for that shopping trip on the station?" Ilana asked (Reply Cat) (Posted By Joanna) (USS Maracaibo – Observation Lounge – COUNS, Lt (jg), Jerry Hindenburgher – 18:10) Jerry grinned. “A bit odd?” he answered Trelawny. “Mighty odd, I would have said.” He then tapped his commbadge. “Take us out, Andreas.” Jerry turned towards the doctor. “Shuttles are heavy. And they tend not to slide too well either. I would have thought that if moved over the ground the shuttle would have rolled over and thus got damaged. But from what she said, the shuttle was ready to fly the minute she got on board. And I do believe in specialists. If geologists tell me that the planet can not produce earth quakes then I take that as a bit of gospel. All in all a bit odd,” he said with a grin and a wink towards Jezebel. “Never the less, thank you all for coming. I have been told by our pilot that we will reach the planet in twelve hours. Everything that I managed to unearth about the planet I have posted on these PADDs but all the important bits I have told you already. Please take one and check it out. We also have plenty of environmental suits on board so I would suggest that we all make sure we know how to work one and be comfortable in it. Seeing the time, though, I have prepared a little dinner for us all, courtesy of Mister Remae and his remarkable repair skills who assisted me with getting the counselling replicator working properly. Vegan hotchpotch, Andalusian peppersteak, Mingolaran waterfowl or Vulcan berry gruel is on offer in the mess hall. Unfortunately the mess hall only holds 6 people at a time so we will have to take shifts, but I am sure you can work that all out amongst you.” Jerry grinned again. “Are there any more questions? If not that bon appetite to some and good reading to the others.” (Reply all present, any) (posted by Adrie Geuken) (USS Maracaibo - Observation Lounge - CEO, Ensign Remae Ktell - 18:15) The ship was heading out but the briefing had continued concluding with an assignment to do some reading. The idea of the dinner was very interesting and Remae decided to put it off to later. "Are there any more questions? If not that bon appetite to some and good reading to the others.", said Jerry and Remae stood up on the light of no more questions seemingly on offer. "Not from me, I am going to do a bit of exploring and then I'll head down to dinner later but I'll take my chances with seating. See you all later.", he said and headed out of the OL. (Reply Any, None) (Posted by Anthony Keen) (USS Maracaibo - Engineering Alcove - CEO, Ensign Remae Ktell - 18:30) It was a small personnel shuttle and although it was warp capable, it didn't have much of a warp core nor an Engineering section as such. It was more of an acolve where a few people could monitor engineering and ship systems and of course where Remae ended up. He was thinking about Magelhera 17 and was examining the information provided and what the computer had to say about the planet. Including with the logs filed from the Geologists teams Jerry had mentioned. He punched one up, it was a short presentation, it looked like it was recorded from inside one of the circular caves. Some scientist was going on about rock formations and he looked not really at home in his environmental suit however, it looked normal and routine. The Bajoran muted the boring dialogue and examined the data that was being included with the talk. It was all introductory, the mission they had outlined, their goals, nothing very recent. He transferred the bulk of the logs onto his PADD. (Reply Any, None) (Posted by Anthony Keen) (USS Maracaibo - Mess Hall - CEO, Ensign Remae Ktell - 19:00) Luckily to spot a seat in the communal mess hall and seeing the replicator, Remae walked over and directly attacked the device to give him a peppersteak... and when it complied and took a seat. He put the PADD down next to his steak dinner and tucked in. "For replicated, that isn't bad at all...", he said to anyone listening. (Reply from Anyone for dinner conversation?)
