There is the Rome no one would know we were gone.” The Doctor weighed in, as he flicked through the inventory once more. The thought appealed to Kurt; The starbase felt eerie, but he had 'borrowed' a shuttle once before as a cadet and the accompanying court martial was not his favorite academy moment. "Aren't we almost there though?" He gave a sigh and smiled. “Well yes there is the others and they would not be very happy. It’s just that this place is creepy. I can’t wait to get out of here.” Kurt was on the same page with the doctor. Perhaps this scenario would be forgivable? "Though we do have a patient in need of immediate medical care." The science chief grinned. (Reply, Williams) Kurt looked back at the inventory screen. "Besides, it's not like they'll need all 19 runabouts in the next few hours" (Reply, Williams) ((Post by Cody)) (USS Rome - Cargo Bay 2 - CSO, LT.jg Kurt Palmer – 16:00) Sorenson took out his phaser. “Shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. I can use this one and then grab another on our way back up.” As he spoke he pulled over a cart with a toolbox. “I’ll get right on it.” “Give it a shot while I finalize these connections.” Kurt replied. He continued making adjustments. Finally the device fit snugly in place. He fastened a few connections and connected the a handful of wires before he moved to the other end to make space for the phaser battery. "I'll be ready for that power source in a couple minutes." Kurt called to their tactical chief. (Reply Sorenson, any) ((Post by Cody)) (USS Rome – Cargo Bay 2 – TAC/ASC, Ensign Michael Sorenson – 16:03) Michael studied the inner workings of the phaser. This was something he could do in his sleep. A favourite pastime of his was to disassemble his weapon and then put it back together. This had got him in trouble at the academy on more than one occasion. Michael smiled as he remembered one time, where he had been found outside the weapons locker, surrounded by weapon parts. ~It had taken hours to put them all together again.~ He thought as he removed the casing for the power cell. His hands seemed to work on autopilot as his mind wandered. It was the call from Palmer that brought him out of his tactical stupor. “I’ll be ready for that power source in a couple minutes.” Michael looked over. “Understood. Thinking about it, I’m not sure that one phaser cell will be stable enough, I’m going to need to borrow yours.” He said, as he finished stripping the power cell casing. (Reply Palmer) (Reply Palmer) (Posted by Brandon) (USS Rome - Cargo Bay 2 - CSO, LT.jg Kurt Palmer – 16:06) “Understood." Sorenson replied. "Thinking about it, I’m not sure that one phaser cell will be stable enough, I’m going to need to borrow yours.” Kurt reached back and disentangled himself from his phaser rifle. "I'll start rigging that first one though." He exchanged the power cell for his weapon, and immediately felt more comfortable. (Reply, Sorenson) He nodded and quickly returned to work, and fixed the first power cell into the free space at the back of the torpedo shell. (Reply, Sorenson, any) ((Post by Cody)) (USS Spectre – Turbolift – Pilot Officer, 2nd Lieutenant Jennifer Smith - 16:08) "Right, but there is a way we could fudge the systems, and somehow start the impulse engines while at warp. Like a jump start. Then safety protocols would be in effect." Jennifer nodded. “Let’s just hope that the protocols kick in as quickly as they are designed to or we will blow the engines.” "Like when a fresh ensign tries to activate impulse before dropping out of warp. The Impulse activation would then cause a deactivation of the warp drive so that the two systems don’t conflict. To prevent both systems from acting simultaneously." She smiled at him. “Yeh but we are doing it on purpose and not a accident.” "However, its a one shot, they could reactivate warp and we may not be able to reproduce the technique, it is kind of difficult remotely." Jennifer nodded. “One thing at a time Chief. Lets get the impulse engines and worry about the warp core after.” "Have you ever tried to hotwire an old car?" Jennifer shook her head. “Dose a speeder bike count?” (Reply Jordan) The turbolift stopped and the door open. Jennifer glanced causally out into the corridor. Seeing it was clear she stepped out and beckoned Jordan to follow. “Let’s hope we don’t meet any uninvited guests on our way.” (Reply Jordan) (Reply Jordan, any) (Posted by Robbie) (USS Rome - Cargo Bay 2 - TAC/ASC, Ensign Michael Sorenson - 16:09) Michael took the phaser rifle from Palmer. "I'll start rigging that first one though." Michael gave a thumbs up. "Just be careful, those power cells aren't exactly compatible." (Reply Palmer) Michael got to work stripping down the rifle. This made him slightly nervous. As much as they were safer on the Rome, Michael didn't feel very comfortable having to leave them unarmed. "Once these power cells are in place what else do you need to do?" He said as he stripped down the second power cell. (Reply Palmer) Michael handed the second power cell over. "Ok then. Let's get this done." (Reply Palmer, any) (Posted by Brandon) (Starbase 39-Sierra - Deck 21, Jefferies Tube Junction B21-A – ACEO, Ensign (JG) Walker Markell 16:10) ~Well I know this base inside and out now.~ thought Walker, sweat pouring off his brow, uniform soiled and soaked as he crawled another 15 meters to the next access panel. Walker had been avoiding all crew contact as much as possible and going as far as disabling the internal sensor grid as he progressed into other areas. He lost track of how many days, but he guessed at least ten perhaps more. Food was easy to get from the cargo facilities on the lower decks. Anything below the computer core torus was nearly devoid of people, at least during the hours he'd spend foraging for supplies. Days ago, weeks perhaps a Ferengi freighter arrived with an invasion force...he wasn't sure the details. Only that the entire station was compromised, crew infected. He knew enough to stay away from people and out of sight, but had to contact the Captain and the away team. He hoped he could turn things around, retake the station or at least get a call for help, anything. Junction B21-A, panel 4114 provided such an opportunity. Using his tricorder, some special knowledge and a little luck he managed to interface the tricorder to the main computer through a low priority subsystem. ~No sense in getting caught now.~ Several minutes later he'd located the Captain and part of the away team. ~Great...only 7 decks above me. This is going to take some time.~ (Reply any, none) (Posted by Gavin) (USS Rome - Cargo Bay 2 - CSO, LT.jg Kurt Palmer – 16:11) "Just be careful, those power cells aren't exactly compatible." The Ensign reminded Kurt He nodded in acknowledgement as he positioned the first cell into place. "Once these power cells are in place what else do you need to do?" Sorenson asked from across the room. "Just one more connection, and we'll be good to go." Kurt glanced back. "Ok then. Let's get this done." Ensign Sorenson replied enthusiastically as he handed over the final component. The science chief made quick work of positioning the final power cell. Then within a few moments he made one final connection back to the sensor array. A mechanical chirp indicated the array was online. "That should do it." He said removing his hands and clicking the cover closed. "What's next?" (Reply, Sorenson, any) ((Post by Cody)) (USS Spectre – Deck 13, Security Station Foxtrot – Marine Sniper, Corporal Housman - 16:11) "Now, this may be a bit of a gamble, but perhaps it may be beneficial, if we come up into engineering from below. Deck 14 holds the Phase Cloak, so I am sure it will be guarded, but if we take the jeffries tubes on 15 or 16, up to deck 12, we might be able to get you a sniper position Houseman. Once we are in position, the O'Hara you and I can sweep in with Houseman providing cover." Houseman nodded mentally going through the route in his mind. “Yes sir that is doable. There are not many good position but there are one or two that can give me a pretty good vantage point.” (Reply O'Hara) "Perhaps, we could rig an explosive or decoy on the other side of engineering where they would expect resistance, and once it goes off we will be able to sweep around and flank them." Houseman nodded and looked at O’Hara as this was his area of expertise. (Reply O'Hara) "It may not be the best plan, but it is what comes to mind. I'm open to suggestions. Preferably one that doesn't get anyone killed." Houseman nodded glancing at his rifle. It was not his personal sniper rifle but it would do. “Yes Sir.” (Reply O'Hara) (Reply Reed, O'Hara, any) (Posted by Robbie) (USS Spectre – Deck 13, Security Station Foxtrot – Marine, Cprl Lewis O'Hara - 16:13) O'Hara listened intently to the plan that was being outlined, his mind drifting between many 'what ifs', as he contemplated its efficacy. Lt Reed was suggesting coming up on the Spectres engineering deck from below and then executing a pincer move from two sides in an attempt to neutralise the Ferengi insurgents that would no doubt be there and recover control of the warp and impulse engines. Houseman seemed keen on the plan, but Lewis had misgivings. This had been a well organised takeover by people that were well versed in covering all aspects of their attack, which in O'Hara's opinion meant that they would not make this easy by anyone's standards. Houseman was a crack shot of course, but any access points that might lead to the Snipers sweet spot would likely have been ascertained well in advance and suitably guarded. “Yes sir that is doable. There are not many good positions but there are one or two that can give me a pretty good vantage point.”, said Houseman, prompting O'Hara to raise an eyebrow. "I'm not so sure", said O'Hara, "they will have covered all entry points into engineering, even those that exit from the tubes. We would need some kind of a diversion for this to be effective.", he added. "Perhaps, we could rig an explosive or decoy on the other side of engineering where they would expect resistance, and once it goes off we will be able to sweep around and flank them.", offered Reed. Houseman nodded and then looked at the MDE as this was his particular area of expertise. O'Hara shrugged his shoulders, pursed his lips and then shook his head. "I still don't like it", he said. "We'd have to gain access to engineering unseen to plant charges, which brings us back to the unlikelihood of the tube hatches being left unguarded. The best I could do would be to plant charges on the opposite side of a bulkhead, but you gotta remember guys, there is an awful lot of things that don't react well to explosives in there and I don't wanna be the guy that has to explain to the Captain that I blew up his ship", he added. "It may not be the best plan, but it is what comes to mind. I'm open to suggestions. Preferably one that doesn't get anyone killed.", said Reed, taking on board all that was being said. Houseman nodded and then glanced to his rifle, clearly relishing the chance to play sniper again. "Couldn't we just pump engineering with a knock out gas?", offered Lewis, still trying not to think of the Captain's face when handing him a small fragment of the whole that his ship once was... (Reply Reed, Houseman, Any) (Posted by Alan) (USS Rome - Cargo Bay 2 - TAC/ASC, Ensign Michael Sorenson - 16:15) Michael watched as the science chief did what he did best. After a few minutes of tinkering he closed up the casing and sealed the unit. "That should do it." He said. "What's next?" "Good work. Now we inform the Captain." Michael tapped his combadge. "Ensign Sorenson to the Captain. Sir we have completed the device. It's ready to be loaded." (Reply T'Vhor) "Understood, sir. Right away." He ended the communication and turned to the lieutenant. "Well then, let's get this loaded." (Reply Palmer) (Reply T'Vhor, Palmer) (Posted by Brandon) (USS Rome - Cargo Bay 2 - CSO, LT.jg Kurt Palmer – 16:43) In his career change Kurt had learned a lot about how sensors worked and what made them tick. Unfortunately the teal uniform afforded him with very little weapons training, and therefore they generally made him uncomfortable; It was enough that he had to cart a phaser rifle around this mission, but now he had to play operation with a torpedo. "Yes, that would be it, hold it steady please." Ensign Sorenson said before turning to address Kurt. "Lieutenant, how are you doing with that device?" "Almost finished." The science chief said without looking up. He flipped the device upside down to remove a bottom panel. "It should only be a few minutes more." "Understood, we're only going to get one shot at this." The security officer reminded him. "Don't worry Ensign, I want to go home just as much as you." He said with a grin. (No reply needed) ((Post by Cody)) (USS Rome - Main Engineering - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 16:44) "What if the routing mechanism were being restricted due to sabotage?", the Captain had offered, letting Will offer his own input on the matter now. "That would make sense sir. But I don't know if we'd be able to detect that and the damage by a mere system scan." "You are correct", said the Captain. "A simple blockage would show up as a build up of pressure and trigger a sensor", he added, "and yet we are seeing no such sensor flashes" Alexander fell silent, his mind clearly on the problem at hand... "The easiest way to asses the damage would be to look at the plasma coils themselves, and investigate the system from the ground up, off console. But I think that can wait till we are in route. I'd hate to delay us." The Captain nodded. It made sense of course, their window was already narrow and narrowing further with every minute they delayed in launching the ship. They needed to move on this now if they were to be in with any chance at all of recovering the Spectre. "I suggest that we check those coils now then", he said. Ensign Alexander then paused, something else clearly on his mind. "Sir, I have to ask, it's been on my mind. The other me. The Will Alexander that materialized after the mission on the USS Phantom, who served on the Spectre twice, once with you while you were First Officer, and then as Commanding Officer. Did you know him well?", he asked. T'Vhor raised an eyebrow at that. "I knew him well enough", answered the Captain. "By all accounts a fine command officer and a worthy friend", he added. "Why do you ask?" "It's been on my mind ever since I ran across one of the Emergency Tactical Holograms sir. She seemed trapped, like her mind was developed past just being a program, and made me think of my own reality." The Captain raised an eyebrow in a typically quizzical Vulcan manner. It was a strange but interesting query. The Ensign was Human and flesh and blood, the Hologram a mix of light and programmed responses. However, he could not put aside the way that Rameriz, the Holographic Marine had developed something more than simple programmed responses way past that that could be expected. Alexander continued on, the two men now opening up a hatch in engineering to head into the Jefferies tubes themselves. (USS Rome - Jefferies Tube J20, Junction A4 - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 16:46) "There is a very real fear that no matter what I do, I have to compare to the general article", continued Alexander as he decsended down through the decks. "In less than six months from the Academy he was the Spectre Second Officer, in less than a year he was First Officer of the Dennison, in less than three Commanding Officer of the Mithrandir, both A and B. Sir how do you measure up to yourself?" Again the Captain pondered the query. "Despite your duality with your counterpart, Ensign. You are a separate entity that is responsible for your own development and path", said the Captain. "It is true of course that you are, in a sense, as one. But you do have your own path of separateness now, thus there is no need to 'Measure Up' as you say", he added. Alexander moved on further into the tubes and then headed down towards the plasma holding tanks, still talking as he went. "And am I going to react in the same way as him, would I have done everything exactly as him. Our minds are identical. Up to a certain point. Would I have done everything the same, made every choice. Am I just a carbon copy?" T'Vhor paused just briefly, his hand taking hold of one of the support rails at the rim of a ladder going downwards. Clearly, this was something that was bothering Alexander a great deal, perhaps to the point where he might need the services of a Counsellor to address it. For the moment though all he could offer was his own Vulcan logic. "I reiterate, you are a separate entity on your own individual path", said the Captain. "Your responses in any given situation may well be comparable, and in some ways possibly identical. But with your unique perspective you might well find that you would make a different decision to one that your counterpart would have made, plus your own experiences from the point that you emerged from the transporter will have begun an entirely separate path", said the Captain, attempteding now to make some sense of the Ensigns obviously troubled mind. "Experiences matter, I know, it is what made the transporter duplicate of Will Riker join the Maquis. How do I live up to a captain. How do I live up to the fact I've technically achieved so much?" T'Vhor by now had reached the bottom of the ladder and had joined Alexander at the bottom, which is precisely the point that he observed what appeared to be a shadow disappearing around the corner of one of the bulkheads up ahead! Will was still trying to wrestle with his own conundrums of course and had completely neglected to see what the Captain had just seen. Immediately though, the CO had drawn his phasor, prompting Alexander to stop dead in his tracks. "There is someone in here with us, Ensign", said the Captain. "We are not alone" (Reply Alexander) NRPG: Here's your opening Gavin. We can play it long or short, involve a bit of Cat n Mouse with Markell not being sure of who he is dealing with, or we can just have him come out of the shadows. Either way though we can use this to introduce your character... RPG: The two men then headed off down the tube towards the location where the CO had spied the shadow... (Reply Alexander, Any) (Posted by Alan) (USS Rome - Cargo Bay 2 - CSO, LT.jg Kurt Palmer – 16:48) Kurt adjusted the sensor array through a secondary panel. It was imperative that this worked the first time. He heard the Doctor and Ensign Sorenson chattering "Now we need to figure out a way to integrate a sensor packet into the torpedo...This is where the Lieutenant works his magic." He looked up at his colleagues- perhaps this was a little more time consuming than he thought. "The Lieutenant may need a few minutes more." "That's fine, we don't want to make any mistakes, we can proceed when you're ready." Sorenson replied before stepping aside to update the Captain. (Reply, any) ((Post by Cody)) (USS Rome - Cargo Bay 2 - TAC/ASC, Ensign Michael Sorenson - 16:50) "Ensign Sorenson, Personal Log, Entry 1. This is my first log since joining the crew of the Spectre. It makes the timing of this kind of funny since the Spectre has been stolen from us. I think I might make a few of these logs, to help pass the time, or keep a reminder, or just relieve some stress, I dunno. Speaking of stress, it's definitely been difficult. I thought I could handle anything this role could throw at me, but this situation is definitely unique. I mean, starfleet personnel controlled by parasites, firengi invading a starbase, and a strange Tactical Hologram.....I miss BETH. Anyway Me, the doctor and Lieutenant Palmer are currently working on making a device that can detect the Spectre. The rest of the away team is working to get the ship operational. I've never been on a defiant class before, I like it. Small and efficient, it's good. If I'm lucky maybe I can try my hand out on the weapons, although I'm hoping we don't have to open fire on the Spectre. I need to head back over to the others. Still have a warhead sitting in a container that needs dealing with. -End of log- (Reply none) (Posted by Brandon) (USS Rome - Jefferies Tube J20, Junction A4 - ACEO, Ensign Walker Markell - 16:51) Walker had been watching the two officers for several hours trying to determine if they were also infected by whatever had made its way through the space station. They seemed okay, rather unconcerned perhaps by their circumstances or not aware perhaps. Walker didn't know and didn't care at this point. His cramped legs demanded he move and in doing do he kicked over the tricorder leaning against the jefferies tube. It made an obvious clank. ~Shit!~ He moved out of the shadows cautiously, "I'm Ensign Walker Markell who's there?" he announced. (Reply any) "I've been aboard the station for sometime...trying to avoid whatever infected the crew and find help." replied Markell. (Reply any) ~Fine time to leave that phaser back at the last junction point.~ he thought. "Understood I am unarmed...coming to you slowly." he replied. (Reply any) (Posted by Gavin) (USS Rome - Jefferies Tube J20, Junction A4 - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 16:53) By now, Ensign Alexander had drawn his phasor also and was accompanying the CO through the tubes moving as quietly as possible. The intruder, if indeed he or she was a hostile, needed to be apprehended sooner rather than later, because there was no room in their plan to be chasing a possibly infected crewman through the bowels of the ship, whilst chasing their own. Reaching the point at which the Captain had seen the shadow though, a glance down the requisite juncture revealed nothing, the assailant obviously having moved further away from them now. T'Vhor signalled Alexander to move ahead and to the left with a wave of his hand, whilst the CO himself moved to take a right, his logic being that the tube they currently occupied doubled back on itself, leaving the intruder with nowhere to go but to one of them. That had been the plan anyway, but a sudden noise up ahead sounding as though something had hit the walkway grating changed all that, a voice then followed. "I'm Ensign Walker Markell who's there?" Alexander and T'Vhor exchanged a glance... "Ensign Markell, I need you to step out into the open where we can see you and you need to explain what you are doing here", said the Captain. Almost immediately a crewman then stepped out, his hands palm out in front of him to show that he was unarmed. "I've been aboard the station for sometime...trying to avoid whatever infected the crew and find help", said Markell, clearly trying his best now to look as un-threatening as he could. The Captain pondered briefly. Right about now he could have used Williams or Kirien and her medical scanner to verify a few things. If this man was infected himself then they could be opening up a whole can of worms, perhaps literally by trusting him off the bat. Then again, if what he was saying was true and that he had been avoiding the infected station crew for so long, then he too needed to know that they themselves were not infected. They had to play this one calmly... "Ensign Markell, I need you to accompany me out to engineering. There are a few things that we need to ascertain before we can sit down and talk. We need to be sure that you are not infected yourself, and we need to show you that we are not infected also. Do you understand?", said the Captain. "Understood. I am unarmed...coming to you slowly." said Markell, who by now was moving towards the two of them, his hands still outstretched. The Captain then tapped at his combadge, his phasor remaining trained on the advancing crewman. "Captain to Doctor Williams. Please respond", said the Captain. (Reply Williams) "I need you in engineering immediately. I have a medical scan for you to perform", he added. (Reply Williams) The Captain then closed the comms and moved aside so as to allow the Ensign to move ahead of him now and back to engineering... He rotated the device once more and removed a wire from the top. "Right." Kurt said standing and careful lifting the sensor array. "Let's see about this magic I have to work." (Reply, any) The science chief examined the inside of the torpedo for a moment. He slid the device into the cavity that was previously filled with the warhead. "So one small complication." He said as he adjusted the device. (Reply, any present) "They don't build torpedoes with a power source." He rested his hands on the shell of the torpedo. He gathered that the device must be nearly finished, as the Lieutenant’s confidence had seemed to increase as time went on. He was no longer messing with the insides of a torpedo, and had instead constructed a scientific instrument. “Right.” Kurt said standing and careful lifting the sensor array. “Let’s see about this magic I have to work.” “Magic, science, little elves. So long as this device works I’ll be happy.” Michael said as he knelt down to observe the work. As far as he could tell the device was solid. Hopefully it would be ready for use shortly. “So one small complication.” The science officer said. Michael looked at the man, really hoping it was a small problem. “What’s the complication? And is it fixable?” Palmer placed his hands on the torpedo shell. “They don’t build torpedoes with a power source. How quickly could you disassemble a phaser or tricorder or something?” Michael stood and pulled out his phaser. “Shouldn’t take more than a few minutes.
