Oggie exclaimed as he saw his "guest" walk through the door of the cargo bay. "I trust you had no trouble finding your way?" Zia shook her head. "No, Oggie, I found it quite easily," she said, smiling at the rotund counsellor. Although she was only supposed to be on the station for a couple of days, having been dropped off by one runabout and then to be picked up a day or two later by another en route to her first assignment in Starfleet, Oggie Marsh had done his best to make her feel at home, albeit temporarily. He had shown her round the station and then promised to show her "something special" before she left. She had been a little surprised to be asked to meet him in the cargo bay of all places and was very curious to see what he wanted to show her. "You have been very kind," she continued, "And I am most curious to see this surprise." "As indeed you should be, my dear. But before I unveil the veil, so to speak, it is you who have been very kind to a poor underworked cousellor. I have enjoyed the time that we spent together and I must admit I for one will miss you dearly when you transfer to the USS Keen later today." Zia, who had been surreptitiously looking round to see if she could spot a veiled-off area, hastened to correct what she thought was Oggie's misapprehension. "It is a runabout which is taking me to the USS Keen," she said. "I will not reach the ship until three days time." Oggie smiled. "So right you are. Please forgive an old man for not communicating properly. It is a bad habit of mine. Anyway, it may not look like much down here but I have it on good authority that in a year's time, in this cargo bay, history will be made. Not really sure how, the chief scientist tried to explain it to me but it has something to do with... chromitons or something like that. Apparently very hush-hush although perhaps not too much hush-hush since it only took me two beers to get it out of him but they are going to do some revolutionary research here in a year." Zia looked round again. There did not seem to be much in the way of equipment. A few crates, a few glass-like cylinders. ~But then again if it is something quiet, they might not need much~ she reasoned. She did not like to ask if Oggie had got the right place; that would be rude. But it didn't seem to her that there was much here to get excited about. She wondered if the chief scientist had been making fun of the counsellor, but Oggie had been friendly and Zia was prepared to show an interest in whatever he was showing her. She noticed that whilst she had been looking around, Oggie had made his way over to one of the crates and was busy opening it, so she walked over to see what was inside. "As I said it may not look much at the moment and perhaps you have to be a bit... geeky to really appreciate the situation. Which to be honest, I'm not really doing. But this crate contains THE core allegedly, and once it is installed and powered up nobody will be able to get as close to it as you and me at this point in time. And perhaps in the future you can tell your children or your grandchildren or both, or even somebody you just picked up in the bar, that you were there where history was being made in the future." Zia looked into the crate. The contents did not look very exciting, and she doubted that she would be talking to anyone that she had reason to lift off their feet in a bar or anywhere else. But Oggie clearly expected some kind of reaction. "It is an honour to be shown something so important," she said warmly. "Thank you Oggie." A thought struck her. "Please, what is 'geeky'?" Oggie grunted. "Hmmm.... Ohhhhkaaaay.... um, when you look into this crate, do you see a big glass ball with metal bits in it, or do you see a new way of life? If it is the first, then you are a realist and we should have many more of those here, by the way. But if you see the second option, you are 'geeky'. You're seeing technical things that aren't really there but that one day *might* be there. It's a different kind of people I guess." "Ah, so geeky means someone who sees things that aren't really there?" Zia was not sure she had the definition correct but that seemed to be what Oggie was saying. "Only for technological things. Geeks are very technology-minded, to the detriment of their social interractions." Zia considered this. "I do not think there are many 'geeks' in the RSE," she stated. "But it is an interesting concept. I will remember the word, thank you Oggie." "Oh, you're welcome. Sure you don't want one last peak before I close the crate again?" Oggie asked as he looked inside the crate again himself. "Uhhhmmm, it didn't do that before?" he murmured to himself. Zia looked at the sphere, which had begun to shine with a pulsing glow. "Did you touch something?" she asked. Oggie, still looking at the sphere, shook his head. "Nope, just the crate. Didn't go anywhere near it. To be honest technology scares me. But only a bit. But perhaps we should - " he fell silent as the pulsating increased in strength and frequency. "Perhaps we should ask the chief engineer to come and look at it," Zia suggested, backing away from the crate a little. "Stellar idea, my dear," Oggie said as he dropped the lid back onto the crate. "Although perhaps we should contact him from the outside. Just to be on the safe side." Zia nodded in agreement and they turned to walk towards the door, not rushing exactly but walking a little faster than they had previously. But as they neared the door, it didn't open. "Now THAT definitely shouldn't happen," Oggie commented, looking to his left at Zia. "My dear! You look radiant this afternoon!" Zia smiled to herself. "You think I think you mean that I am shining," she said, "But I know this idiom. You mean that I am looking nice, and it is very sweet of you to say so, but perhaps we should see if we can open the door?" "No, no, dear. You ARE shining!" Zia now looked at Oggie in surprise. "So are you!" she exclaimed. "Oggie, what is happening?" Oggie looked at his hands and saw them pulsating with an eerie glow. A glow he'd seen just moments before... he turned back to look at the crate. "Uhhmm....oops?" he said as he saw how the whole cargo bay was now basking in an eerie pulsating glow emanating from the crate. He turned round, raising his fist to hammer at the door when suddenly the world turned white as Zia and Oggie were thrown against the door. The light dissipated as quickly as it had emerged and the door opened and both fell through the doorway into the corridor beyond. NRPG: Assuming that the energy donated by the Spectre caused the Mithrandir to be dragged from the future to the present time-line, the energy donated by the Mithrandir could have caused Oggie and Zia to be dragged from the past to the present time-line. Nevertheless, Ayehla knew it was better no to break up a working routine. As she had the habit on the USS Tulsa, Ayehla had woke up exactly at 0515, and then went to our daily 30 minutes morning sprint, either in the holodeck on in the gym, then taking a shower ready to take her breakfast at the mess at exactly 0600. She started her first day on the Mithrandir with exactly the same routine and at exactly 0600, she was at the officer mess. Walking to the replicator. "Two eggs, two slices of wheat bread, slightly toasted, with fruits, and an orange juice". Taking her plate, she sat at one of the table in one corner of the mess, holding also a padd with the latest reports. The change in the tactical and security department were minors. Except from the promotion of Syuvik which leaded to her affection on the USS Mithrandir, the only other change made in the most ranked officers of the two departments was the departure of Lieutenant Kerib Tharel to the USS Tulsa. Until she could evaluate the officers under her command, his previous position was inherited by Ensign Irushek. There was now a need for a new gamma shift leader, and the temporary choice was to chose the other most ranked officer, Senior Chief Rodarehs Castian. As for the Tactical department, there was no change, and Lieutenant Soljin Ledis, a half Bajoran- half Cardassian man, remained the assistant tactical officer. The fact of having another officer with the same rank under her command wasn't ideal, but considering how few officers there was in these two departments, having a very competent assistant would be useful. While she was reading the report and eating her breakfast, an officer addressed her. "Hello Ma'am. Excuse me to disturb you, but I know there has been a few change in the roster, and I don't think I ever saw you before." Ayehla put her padd aside and looked at the young officer. "You are right. I am Lieutenant Ayehla Zyahn, the new chief of security and chief tactical officer" "Oh so you are my new superior. Eeh....I'm Chief Petty officer Welan Nometis, the armory chief. Nice to meet you". Ayehla nodded to salute him. "So, I've heard you are an ex-marine?" The petty officer stopped suddenly, realizing that was maybe not a good question to ask. Ayehla laughed interiorly. She loved the reaction of peoples when they were learning she was an ex-marine. "I was ex-marine. Is there a problem with that?" The petty officer became red. "I'm sorry ma'am, I meant no disrespect." Ayehla gave a hint of a smile. "You are already fearing me chief? Don't worry, I bark but I don't bite......at least not on the first day." replied Ayehla. She loved to use her authority to tease them. Somehow, joking about her authority made her look more sympathic, which was also important to get their loyalty and confidence. Ayehla then continued : "As for your next question, I will organize a meeting with the departments after the alpha shift to answer your questions." The officer seemed surprise at the remark. "Eeh....thanks....that was gonna be my next question." Ayehla smiled. "I know." Ayehla having completed her breakfast, and being almost 0630, she stood up. "Now, you will have to excuse me chief, but I have some stuffs to do before my shift." "No problem ma'am." (Reply None) (Posted by Nick) (USS Mithrandir - FO Office - SC Lieutenant Ayehla Zyahn - 08:12) Lieutenant Syuvik called her to his office, and started. "First, it is customary in starfleet to welcome a new member and I therefore officially welcome you in the name of the crew." started Syuvik. "Thank you, sir." she replied. She had learn as a marine to shorten her conversation and simply listen to her superiors. Even if she was recently encouraged to change that habit and take a more active role in the decision process, she still preferred the short answers. "You might be aware that, before my promotion, I had the position you are now holding. I therefore consider logical to insure that the transition go well." resumed Syvuik. Ayehla simply answered with a simple "I was indeed aware sir." "I believe useless to say who I was since we are not the same person and there is no rule which say you have to behave like your predecessor. That, you don't have to worry about." said Syuvik. Ayehla was amused how Vulcans, including Syuvik, were use to explain every choice rationnally and make that reasoning known by others. Nevertheless, she preferred not say a word and let Syuvik explain his thoughts. "I have read your background and certainly our experiences and educations always influences on our personality. If you have been given the position, it's because we are fully confident you have what it takes knowing who you are. Nevertheless, it would not be out of expectation that the officers under your command, being use to a way of working, might feel unease at the beginning with the change of chief. As the first officer, and previous chief of security and tactical, I am at your disposal if you have any question, if you need any advice, or if you have any problems." All the reasoning made it not perfectly clear, but it seemed Syuvik was simply giving her the acknowledgement he was plenty confident in her skills, which she appreciated. "Perfect sir." Syuvik took a padd in his hand he had prepared for her, then handed it to her. "Also, I have prepared for you a summary of every of my latest decisions or modifications, as well as the report of what was the work and tasks....everything you need to know to continue where the tactical and security department are at right now." "Thank you sir." she replied while taking the padd. "Do you have any question?" asked Syuvik "No sir." she said. Waiting a second to see if Syuvik was done, she then stood up and left his office. (Reply None) (Posted by Nick) (USS Mithrandir - Bridge - FO, Lieutenant Syuvik - 08:12) If Syuvik had been superstitious, he would have certainly thought the name Mithrandir was cursed. Since the new Luna-class had been out of the shipyard and had worn the name Mithrandir, the missions it had the bad luck to always finish its mission prematurely. In fact, there was a correlation. During their two last missions, they had to deal with a rebel starfleet ship, one from the past, the other who sold his allegiance for an unknown reason, and both time, the USS Mithrandir was finally recall. But bad luck or good luck was a chimera and the admiralty had certainly a good reason to recall the Mithrandir during both time. Needless to say, the Mithrandir was preparing for his third mission, and it wasn't without some shake up. If there wasn't any logic in getting used or accustomed to things being one way, Syuvik had nevertheless to admit he wasn't indifferent to seeing Lieutenant-Commander Jaclyn Smith leaving the crew. She had been a nice addition to the crew, and despite she was making decisions often emotionally and impulsively, she was nevertheless a very skilled officer with whom he had developed a good chemistry. But logic required universal sentences, not particular sentences. It wasn't a logical reflection, and Syuvik chased it for a more logical reflection. For Starfleet in general, Jaclyn Summers was the most logical choice as new CO of the USS Tulsa. Not only had she the skills, but she was already there, ready to take command. As for his promotion to Lieutenant senior grade, and his promotion as new FO of the USS Mithrandir, Syuvik still wondered if it was a logical choice. Nevertheless, contrary to the two others offers that had been submitted to him previously by other CO to invest his interest in being FO, there was a logical reason not to object to the promotion : he was already part of the crew, so finding a FO from the inside had some logic into it. Was it the most logical decision, that was another story. Certainly there were officers more experienced and more competent than him, but he was now getting accustomed to the fact logic was only part of a human decision, and never all of it. His promotion as Lieutenant and Second Officer had given the clue, and his new promotion was the confirmation. Having completed the review of the reports of every department, and having completed his first morning walk as a first officer, checking that everything was fine and making sure to create the necessary atmosphere for the crew to trust him and make him a confident concerning their worries about the mission and their day-to-day decisions, Syuvik was back on the bridge to take care of another important matter: the transition of his new promotion and of the new arrival : Lieutenant junior grade Ayehla Zyahn. Syuvik had the time to read her background and starfleet history and it would mean quite a change in the department. She was an ex-marine which mean she had learned the hard way. Marines were certainly the officers the hardest to form, as it was sometimes taking time to make them understand that they needed to forget about themselves completely and had to become perfect altruist, putting their lives on the line to save others. But once they were, they were the most loyal and disciplined officers you could find. Nevertheless, there was also the possibility her expectation would be high and the discipline she might want to implement, severe. Stepping on the bridge, Syuvik nodded to the captain and then went directly to talk to her. "Hello Lieutenant. Can you come in my office?" Syuvik asked her. "Yes sir." As another officer replaced her, she and Syuvik walked to Syuvik new office. "First, it is customary in starfleet to welcome a new member and I therefore officially welcome you in the name of the crew." started Syuvik. "Thank you, sir." "You might be aware that, before my promotion, I had the position you are now holding. I therefore consider logical to insure that the transition go well." resumed Syvuik. "I was indeed aware sir." Her short and straight to the point answer was noticed by Syuvik, who continued. "I believe useless to say who I was since we are not the same person and there is no rule which say you have to behave like your predecessor. That, you don't have to worry about." said Syuvik. Waiting for an answer but none coming, Syuvik decided to get directly to the point. "That's all well and good, but these hallucinations are taking their toll," stated Fala. "Before long we won't know the difference between reality and fantasy. We need to regroup with the commander and plan out next action. Either we need to get off this station or nullify whatever is causing this." (reply Smithson and/or Yates) "Alright, let's head out. (reply Smithson, Yates, any) (posted by Jason French) (Station Echo One Zero - Medical - Security Officer, Ensign Nathanial Yates - 11:55) The arrival of two members of the away team had not been without a certain amount of comfort considering the fact that Yates had just battled with a medieval knight! He had the bruises to prove it and yet, nothing in this place made any sense whatsoever. Then there had been the little dance performed by Smithson, her trick weapon having been utilized against a seemingly invisible foe. This had Yates wondering, had the knight truly been there, would enyone else have seen it had they been there beside him? The Science officer, Ensign Fala broke his thoughts with a mention that perhaps, they should be moving on, but Nathanial still had an eye on the biobed and it's curious readout that implied a person being upon it, when in fact there was no one. "Before long we won't know the difference between reality and fantasy", said Fala continuing on now and suggesting that they try to find the FO and the others. "Yup", said Yates, enthusiastically, then he pointed to the biobed that had occupied his thoughts earlier. "Can we bring the invisible man with us?", he quipped. (Reply Any) It was probably a stupid thing to say anyway, but then Yates could never really be serious about anything. It seemed though that Fala was now taking the lead and had ordered himself and Smithson to be ready for anything they might encounter, a statement that was probably just asking for another stupid comment from the hulking Yates as he made to say something, and then held it within the somewhat dubious recesses of his mind... Yates then turned to Smithson as they all moved towards the door. "So Smithson, where did you get the toy?", he asked. (Reply Smithson, Fala, Any) (Posted by Alan) (Station Echo One Zero - Medical - TAC/ASC, Ensign Alexandria Smithson - 11:56) As all were now reunited it was a unified choice to get the heck out of there. “That's all well and good, but these hallucinations are taking their toll. Before long we won't know the difference between reality and fantasy. We need to regroup with the commander and plan out next action. Either we need to get off this station or nullify whatever is causing this.” Fala said with finality. “The Sooner I am back on the discovery the better, this place gives me the creeps” Alex said. "Alright, let's head out. I'll scan for anomalies. Yates and Smithson, you be ready for anything we might encounter." "Yup", said Yates, enthusiastically, then he pointed to the biobed that had occupied his thoughts earlier. "Can we bring the invisible man with us?", he quipped. “Funny ha, ha” Alex said no longer in a good mood. As they left Medical they entered the turbolift Fala and Alex had arrived in, as the doors closed and the destination was given, Yates turned to Alex and asked. “So Smithson, where did you get the toy?” Pulling the collapsed object out and looking at it “It was given to me by my father, he may be Ambassador to Kronos now, but he used to be a Starfleet Marine” Alex answered as the item was replaced in its belt pouch. "Sir. I have an idea to consider.", said Gronk. "Go ahead Ensign, any idea is better than none at all", said the Captain. "If we can't detect any em related phenomena it would suggest environmental would it not?", began the Science Officer, to which the Captain pondered briefly. "Not necessarily Ensign, EM distribution can be the result of a number of other variables, machine generated would be one example", said the Captain, "however, please continue" Gronk then began again. "If we send anyone else down, send them in eva suits. They are self contained. Anyway its a thought Sir", said Gronk. The Captain pondered once again, there was merit in the science officers suggestion, and even though there could be no guarantee that protection of that sort might prevent any further losses, it had to be possible that it might. "Agreed", said the Captain, his mind already falling in the direction of his previous plan to send the Marines over in a shuttle. The Marines would normally deploy into a hostile environment in full protective gear anyway, so the combination of Gronks plan and their actual deployment might just work. "Thank you Ensign, please continue to monitor the situation for now", said the Captain as he returned his attention to the research station, still off axis and as apparently dead as the hour they had arrived here... (Reply Any, IYW) (Posted by Alan) (Station Echo One Zero – Control Hub – FO, Commander Andrew Williams – 12:01) Things had been going very strange. He watched as the teams were still searching the station and was not able to contact the ship. There was a sudden flash of light from the over head lights and the room was dropped into darkness, apart from the glow of the consoles and the main view screen. “Ow grate.” He blinked hard as he tried to get the blobs of light that danced in front of his eyes. As he reached out to steady him self on console in front of him, there was a sound the noise of nails scrapping on metal. He flinched as he turned towards the noise. He was about call out when he heard a low guttural grown. ~Ow this is not good~ He blinked harder and faster trying to get the spots from his eyes. ~Jay where are you?~ There was no answer from his mind. ~Ow you are so not funny~ There was the sound of something heavy dropping to the floor and moving towards him. ~I am so ….~ An blurry image moved across his filed of view and he leaped back and stuck out. His fist slashed through the air but the blurry image kept getting closer as he stepped back. “Get away with me.” The image in front of him suddenly came into focus. There was a man standing in front of him in a tattered jumpsuit and a ripped, blood stained lab coat. He was reaching out for Andrew, he lurched back falling over the console as the man’s hands missed him by inches. “Stuff this for game of soldiers.” He muttered as he saw more people crawling out of an access hatch at the far end of the room. Andrew was up on his feet and sprinting for the door before the man could get around the console to try and grab him. When Gronk was nervous or worried the flicking increased. An away team had gone missing. This did not bode well. His readings didn't suggest anything odd at this point. Yet something was definitely screwy Gronks tri-digited hand scratched his head in puzzlement. This was a human like habit he adopted to try and fit in. After all a six foot tall upright reptile was definitely a rarity! Gronk wondered if the CO would send another team down to the station. He doubted that would occur until they had some answers. (Reply: None) (Posted by Bill W.) (Station Echo One Zero - research section - FO, Cmdr Andrew Williams - 12:30) He ran as fast as he could not caring where he ran just as long as he was away from the ‘Things‘ following him. His feet hammered on the floor as he charged down one corridor and then the next, down a flight of stairs and then another. His legs were burning and his lungs felt like some one had poured acid into them. He paused for a moment using his arms to hold himself up against the wall as his legs gave way. He laid there in a crumpled heap gasping for breath trying to get himself moving again. There was a hiss of opening doors behind him and he familiar sound of perusing feet. ~Why can’t they just go away~ He let out a groan and pulled him self up to his feet. There was a doorway to his right he staggered towards the door as it opened and he fell through it as it shut. He had tried to block their paths but they had always gotten through. She flicked out his tricorder and used it to scramble the doors lock. There was a loud bang as something heavy slammed into it. “That won’t hold for long.” He pulled himself across the room and up onto a console. He looked over the console in front of him out over a large pool of water below. There was a large clear hatch which covered the whole of the large pool. He realized that if he tried to jump down, the fall would kill him if he landed on it. “Ow this is great, a room with no exit marvelous.” There was a large bang from behind him and he glanced over his shoulder to see that the door was buckling. It would not last for long under the sustained pounding. His eyes frantically searched the console in front of his trying to find his salvation. There was an icon on the console which was flashing in front of him which read Pool hatch control. His finger jammed down hard on it and he heard a soft whirring sound as the large hatch begin to open below him. “Looks like it is time to get wet.” He pulled the sleeves of his uniform back to reveal the skin tight MK VI personal dive suit he wore underneath his uniform. The first thing Andrew had done when they had returned to earth after the Spectre had made its plunge into the ocean depths was to buy the most advanced personal dive suit that was on the market at the time. It was a skin suit which was only a millimeter thick so it acted like a second skin. Its advanced molecular material gave him full range of movement as well as extracting oxygen from the water around it which reduced the need for bulky air tanks. He pulled on a pair of form fitting gloves over his hands which gave a soft hiss as the sealed to the suits wrists. There was a sudden crash behind him as the door finally bucked and the ‘Things’ charged in. Andrew yanked the hood over his head as he charged towards the leaping onto it and launching him self out over the pool far below him. He levelled the III-C rifle that he had been issued with, again not his TR-116 sniper rifle but a sturdy enough weapon when counted on. He scanned the corridor behind him making sure that nothing was following them. As the Major had stated that anyone who was going to disappear like the fleeters would be in trouble and Houseman did not want to find out what kind of trouble the major could dish out. He glanced at his TACOM display to make sure that he was not lagging behind. He saw that they had stopped which was worrying in itself. ~better not lag behind~ He slid out from behind the bulkhead he was concealed behind and cautiously moved back towards the team. "I suggest we go the other way with this problem," explained Remae to Lieutenant Adams. "Power up the core again, throw open the antimatter/matter injectors as wide as you dare and generate as much power as you can…transfer everything the Spectre has into the warp coils. Releasing that much energy at once without going to warp is going to do a few things. We can track where the energy goes easier, perhaps locate where on the station the drain is coming from...If we can locate it, we can get some short range detailed scans and find out what this and in the process even satisfy it long enough to leave us alone for a while." The chief engineer thought it over. It was risky, but frankly he was tired of playing it safe. We needed to locate the away team and they needed to locate them now. "We should probably bring the Spectre in closer to the station," he stated giving his approval of the plan. "It will increase the likelihood that our scans will identify the anomaly." (reply Remae) "Change in plans, Chief Biign," stated Adams looking over at the Selkie engineer. "Start the engines back up." Remae was deep in the diagnostics of the warp core, specifically, the antimatter injector, the simulation he was running had the nacelles disconnected from the warp drive. The coils would simply release the plasma instead of creating the warp field. He was increasing the flow, 105%, 107% and then to 110%. They could sustain it for a short time but it was going to get hot up there. Very hot indeed. There was additional danger of the coils suffering damage from the heat. It couldn't last long. It had been the hope of the Captain, and indeed the CEO, that a warp core shutdown might not only minimise their losses, but also re-establish communication with their missing away team. So far though, the Marines, although reporting strange occurences themselves, had failed to locate their targets. It was at that precise moment that the CEO contacted the bridge with an announcement. =/\=Adams to Bridge=/\= "Go ahead Mr Adams", said the Captain, hoping now that something new might have come to light that was not showing on the bridge consoles. =/\=We have a plan to narrow down what may be blocking our communication with the away team.=/\=, began the Lieutenant and ships second officer. (Reply Adams, Any) The Captain pondered the ramifications of the plan, and the suggestions that Adams had put forwards, then he turned to Gronk who seemed now to be listening intently to the ensueing discussion. "This would require working in liason with the Ops officer", said the Captain to the eager Science officer, "you will have to work closely in order to monitor power differentials as well as be looking for anomolous readings on the station", he added. (Reply Gronk) The Captain then settled back into his chair, a somewhat niggling thought beginning to manifest within him. This could indeed go very wrong, but to do nothing was to invite nothing more than a continuation of their current situation... and that was not something that they wished to do. Over the last twenty minutes, he'd found working to be... almost impossible. He'd been feeling strange sets of emotions, random thoughts, out of the crew on the station. Added to the fact that they couldn't be found, and Walker had no reason to be feeling anything, made the sensation doubly strange. Some of the thought patterns, at first a curiosity, had been getting stronger and more numerous. It could no longer be ignored. He crossed his hands behind his back and stepped quietly over to the CO. "Captain, a word?" (reply: as necessary) Walker broke his usual image of coolness by running a hand over his face. "I've been listening in on the away team, at random times. At first I thought it was just an artifact, but... the pulses are coming stronger." He paused for a moment as he looked at the operations board, a massive power drain was starting. His eyes turned to the screen as he continued with, "Sir, something is very wrong. There are creatures over there with mental patterns that can't exi.." He broke off and frowned as the pressure on his shields increased almost exponentially. "Can't exist... and the crew. Terror." The operations panel showed the power drain was done, and a couple of people had turned to look at him for his unusual behavior, but Walker was beyond caring. His eyes went wide and glazed as his shields, hard won over years, suddenly came under mounting waves of attack from the station. He uttered a small cry as his mental defenses collapsed, and for a few moments he was One with the crew on the station. Their anxieties, their fears, their hatreds and manic hopes. Every thought going through their collective heads drilled into him, all of it washed through his mind, utterly destroying his control. With loss of control, his talent went rogue. In automatic defense, he lashed out, forcing the thoughts and emotions he was buried in into the minds of anyone around - almost as if trying to find the source and plug it. He fell to his knees, straining, as someone cried out in terror on the bridge. Whatever hells Walker was living through, so too was the crew. After a few seconds, or an eternity, Walker took control of his shields again and slammed them shut as tight as ever he could. The assault on his mind ceased, leaving blessed near-silence. A harsh rasp filled the bridge, and it took long moments to realize that it was his own breath. He looked up after making sure his mind was still intact, "What did you just do?" He felt Syuvik was a logical choice, and he had marked the career of the young officer as one to watch. He was giving Syuvik a chance, much like the Chance he was given a long time ago. There were also a few changes, as Lt. JG of the Tulsa came over as the new tactical chief, while Alosar left for reassignment, and ME'Lissa was assigned as the new CEO of the Tulsa. So there had been some changes overall, but Will, though sad to see his crew leave, knew it was for the best and that Starfleet had it's reasons. So, just five days later, having departed from escorting the Tulsa and heading to it's new destination, the Mithrandir made it's way, not really focusing on what they were passing, merely knowing that they were out there to explore the unknown. Will was seated firmly in the Captains chair facing the view screen, Syuvik in the FO chair to his right, to his left was Lt. Santiago the Strategic Operations officer. Lt. Rodriguez was at the helm, with Lt. Briggs at Ops. the new tactical chief was presently at her station, and Lt. McKenzie was at the bridge's science console. As they were normally cruising the Ship began to shake. "Shields up, what's going on, Mr. Rodriguez, can't you fly her straight?" "I don't know what is going on," replied the Spaniard. "We seem to be caught in something. It seems to be pulling us I can't seem to shake it," Before Will could say anything, the shaking feeling stopped. "Good work, Lieutenant," Will said as he began to congratulate his CONN officer. "I did nothing sir, it seems whatever grabbed hold, let go, but...wait sir, this can't be right," "What do you mean Rodriguez?" Will replied rather intrigued. "Sir, the Spectre is appearing on my navigation sensors, right in front of us." "On screen," Will barked. (reply Briggs) Sure enough, the Spectre, which hadn't been infront of them before, had appeared. Surely had the Spectre been there, Will would have noticed, hell the Spectre would have noticed. Captain T'Vhor had been a good friend and mentor to Will. Something would have been exchanged between the two ships. "McKenzie, Verify is that the Spectre." (reply McKenzie) "Sir," Chimed in Rodriguez, "The Helm's chronometer reads 2414.03.10, thats 6 months into our past." "Briggs, Confirm" (reply Briggs) "Interesting, Thoughts Mr. Syuvik?" (reply Syuvik) "Well we should be polite and say hello, maybe they can help us figure things out. I know, I know, temporal prime directive, but they have to have seen us. So it is no point hiding, we will just have to be careful what we say." (reply Syuvik) "We can trust Captain T'Vhor. Briggs open a channel" (reply Briggs) "This is Captain William Alexander of the NCC 77752-B USS Mithrandir, we seem to have been caught in some sort of temporal anomaly, please confirm Stardate." (reply Spectre) (reply Spectre Bridge, Briggs, Syuvik, McKenzie) (posted by Will Banowsky) (USS Spectre - Bridge - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 14:31) So far, so good. The gradual ramping up of the warp drive under the careful management of the CEO and Ensign Remae in Engineering, was now proceeding as planned with the immediate levels remaining within the optimal tolerences ascribed them. Thus far, the relevant Ops and Science officers seemed to be happy with the way things were proceeding, and the Captain was also happy to allow the experiment to continue at this time. The arrival of the Betazoid, Acting TAC/SC, Walker Isengard onto the bridge had been met with the normal responses afforded to him as the man in the top job re security, there had initially been a few 'sir's' from those officers situated around the bridge outer consoles, and then Walker himself marched up to the Captain's chair, an aire of guarded uncertainty etched upon his features as he did so. Of course, this was not particularly unusual for the Betazoid uber telepath, but something seemed to be bothering him and the Captain was now beginning to sense it. "Captain, a word?", stated the acting chief curtly, and the Captain, although completely understanding Isengards remark, chose to let logic rule his response in a time honoured Vulcan manner. "Which word did you have in mind Mr Isengard?", he asked, noting Isengards slight betrayal of his usual calm and collected exterior. Preferring not to engage the Captain's attempt at some sort of twisted humour, Isengard then continued on... "I've been listening in on the away team, at random times", he began, "At first I thought it was just an artifact, but... the pulses are coming stronger." he added, his attention now focussing elsewhere, the realization of something amiss entering into his mind as he looked to the Ops console. "Sir, something is very wrong. There are creatures over there with mental patterns that can't exi...... Can't exist... and the crew. Terror.", said Isengard, the earlier look of calm dissolving now into one of utter panic as the Ops officer began urgently checking his board. The Captain immediately leant forwards in his chair, his attention on the Ops officer as he did so. "What is wrong?", he asked, a growing sense of urgency now tipping his own responses. (Reply Smith) By now, the bridge personnel were all focussed on Isengard as he began acting more and more bizzare by the second, this culminating in a cry and then falling to his knees in apparent anguish. "Mr Isengard?", enquired the Captain, standing to his feet and advancing towards him now, "What is going on?" Isengard though was not responding now and was seemingly in an agonized condition upon the floor, whilst all at once the entire bridge crew either doubled over in their relative chairs, or fell to the floor likewise, the Captain amongst them! His own mind was suddenly transported to the horrors of a Cardassian prison camp and the worst nightmares that anyone could ever imagine therein. In an instance T'Vhor saw a Cardassian foot soldier standing above him, his boot raising up into the air prior to slamming down hard onto his head! Instinctively, his hand came up to his face in order to protect it, then all at once, everything simply returned to normal, Isengard now rising to his feet and ranting agreesively in regards the Captain having done something wrong. "What did you just do?... Whatever was wrong, it's... it's... much worse. Much.", cried Isengard in genuine concern for both his, and the ships safety. The Captain wasted no time at all of course and immediately returned to his chair, his fingers stabbing with measured precision at the console buttons in order to check their immediate systems and make a call to Engineering. "Bridge to Engineering, disengage the warp drive immediately, repeat, power down the warp core until further notice and stand by for further orders", said the Captain, as those around him began crawling to their feet again, and onto their respective chairs, some of which had fallen in the ensueing chaos that had just transpired. (Reply Engineering) The Captain then made an immediate ship wide call. "Damage control, report", he snapped, "all stations, please report on current operational status"... and then he turned again to Isengard, his own mind just a tad fritzed by whatever had just hit him. "Do you want to explain to me what just happened there Mr Isengard?", queried the Captain, hopeful now that the Betazoid savant might be able to offer something constructive. (Reply Isengard) It was then that the announcement from beyond came completely unexpected. "Sir, I... I have a ship", muttered the Tactical officer, "a ship sir... just materialized off our port bow. It's the .... it's the Mithrandir sir!" The Captain spun about to the viewscreen, his eyes now registering the proof of the tactical officers observation. It was true, it was indeed the Mithrandir.... but how could that be?" (Reply Isengard, Smith, Gronk, Any) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Main Engineering - ACEO, Ensign Remae Ktell - 14:31) The reaction chamber came back to life almost on schedule; the injectors began to feed in the supply of matter and antimatter. The outside cameras showed Remae that the nacelles were returning to their normal blue glow and almost at the same time, the same power loss as before, began to be registered. Pressing a few buttons, he disconnected the warp nacelles from the warp control system, they couldn't be used to form a warp field. "Okay, I'm increasing the antimatter/matter flow, bringing it up to 50%.", said the ACEO and slowly, he began to watch the warp core pulsation rate increase…and increase and increase some more. "75%", he reported and the temperature was rising... a containment field was around the core but the heat in Engineering was now rising quickly and they didn't have much longer. Sparks began to fly around the Plasma Transfer Conduits leading off the core and they delivered energy to the nacelles. "90%", the core pulsed and the Spectre should have been travelling close to its top warp speed but all that energy was simply pouring out of the nacelles and into space. Remae didn't take his eyes off the needles. [Warning, warp core thermal threshold exceeded] White coolant gas now began to leak out of core directly, it was giving way but it Remae wanted a little more. "Opening antimatter injector to 105%", he said as he almost shouted over the pulsating noise of the warp core, the noise of the ship literally tearing itself apart and the groan of the nacelles above them… and then, he pulled the pin and closed the injectors, shutting them down to their minimum levels. The noise went away and within a few moments, Remae was looking over the diagnostics. "Some minor buckling of the starboard warp coil, but its not overly serious… everything else looks operational. Lt Adams, did it work? Did you track the power drain to the station?", he said wiping his hands down the front of his uniform as he waited for the analysis to come in. Which at first had been an isolated incident had quickly spread across the power distribution system. The Captain immediately leant forwards in his chair, his attention on the Ops officer as he did so. "What is wrong?" “Captain we have a build up of strange energy reading emanating from the station towards us but I can’t place it exactly. I am trying to find a way to counter act it but it is creating a massive build up of excess power in the power distribution system…” His words were cut off as Isengard gave out a cry and dropped to his knees. He pulled his eyes from the stricken Isengard back to his console, which was also not giving him a good image. If he did not find a way to reduce the power build up things would get messy very fast. ~Okay I can shunt the power to reserve dumps bravo, charley and gamma~ His figures danced over the console as he saw his indicators tell him that the power system was heading towards max capacity at a very fast rate. ~Ow this is just not good~ He heard the Captain put in a call to engineering as watched his console as the warp core went into a crash shut down. Instantaneously the ship went onto reserve power and the energy levels began to drop dramatically. Gronk scanned it and verified it was of federation registry. He wondered if this was somehow tied to the anomaly on the station. His head was rapidly clearing, though it was pounding from the suddenly crash of all his mental defenses. He was going to have a Grade A headache for quite a while. Of course, the pain did nothing to improve his mood. "Do you want to explain to me what just happened there Mr. Isengard?" The betazoid took a moment, "Whatever is going on, just got worse - it overwhelmed my defe-" his explanation was cut off as the relief officer on Tactical said: "Sir, I... I have a ship, a ship sir... just materialized off our port bow. It's the .... it's the Mithrandir sir!" Walker jumped to the side and stepped up to the secondary tactical console. In a moment he'd flipped it to primary and run the full battery of tactical sensors over it. "Correct make, materials, broadcasting the correct IDF." He said in a low voice. "Incoming transmission." His frown deepened as he considered their message, if there were a temporal anomaly about, that would explain the power of the mental transmissions. It was a new experience he was trying the best to assimilate as his tasks were new. Practicing, Syuvik was cross-checking, via the computer in his chair, the information that was channeled. But then, the ship began to shake. Syuvik examined his captain with the new eyes as he was taking care of the situation. Listening to the orders he gave, Syuvik decided to contribute as well. "Lieutenant Zyahn, report." said Syuvik. "We have no report as of yet, sir." Syuvik give it a though a second or two. "The shaking was minor. It is logical no one was hurt, not even slightly." Syuvik then turned to the captain. Quickly, it was discovered that the ship went through an anomaly. That was the logical conclusion to come considering the latest report of Lieutenant Santiago. "Interesting, Thoughts Mr. Syuvik?" Syuvik took a second to check the info, and then looked back at Will. "I'm not sure traveling back in time is in our interest, but I agree it is of our concerns. It might be only six months, but we doesn't know yet how it will affect the timeline. I recommand being cautious sir" "Well we should be polite and say hello, maybe they can help us figure things out. I know, I know, temporal prime directive, but they have to have seen us. If it was a very logical answer, there was a complete background behind that sentence that make it sound odd. "I agree sir, but needless to say the least we say, the better it would be." "We can trust Captain T'Vhor. Briggs open a channel" As the captain started the conversation with Captain T'Vor, Syuvik rose from his chair and walked toward the science console. Once more, the pulsating noise of the warp core disappeared and the Spectre was now running on its system of fusion reactors. There was something was niggling at the back of Remae's mind but he shook it off at the mention of a ship that appeared of their port side. "The Mithrandir?", said Remae out loud when he overheard the conversations that were going on around him. He took at a look at the readings coming from is console. Could the extreme power transfer of the warp core have something to do with this? Remae wasn't waiting around to guess. "The warp core is now offline. Initial scans of the Mithrandir indicate she is intact, no structure damage or damage of anykind but I need to mention her warp core will now be adding to the power transfer being sent to the station. Right now they were down an away team, a research station that had once been home to forty plus scientists and crew was now devoid of life, the ship was having power sucked away from it by some unknown force, and now the Captain was being told that the Mithrandir that had just appeared of their port aspect, should not be there at all as it was supposedly light years away on a recon mission! The Captain took a deep breath, and then exhaled as the reports continued to come in from all decks in regards the recent trauma to the ship. So far, the only casualties that had been reported were minor, and thankfully their key systems had survived the jolt from.. whatever it was. As for the Mithrandir, it was now hailing. "On screen please", called the Captain, and the viewscreen garbled slightly before stabilizing to show the recognizable face of the Mithrandir's CO. =/\=This is Captain William Alexander of the NCC 77752-B USS Mithrandir, we seem to have been caught in some sort of temporal anomaly, please confirm Stardate=/\= The Captain took a brief moment to note the man in the centre chair, Alexander had once been a command officer on board the Spectre so he was not a new face to the Captain by any standards, he had weathered slightly though, no doubt the stresses of a new command having had their effects as ever they did. The Captain duly nodded, and then responded accordingly. The Stardate is 2414.03.10, is there a problem with your chronometers Captain?", said the Captain, his head quirking to one side as an announcement came from Isengard beyond. "Sir, they're broadcasting a timestamp of 2414.09.10.", he said in a hushed tone, to which the Captain raised an eyebrow quizzically, and then turned to face the viewscreen once again. No sooner had they been dealing with the Tulsa, than they were meandering to some other far off distant place where some other mystery would surely reveal itself. Of course, Jason did enjoy a good surprise, so he at least had that going for him. As he was in mid thought, the ship began to shake. He grabbed the side of the console to steady himself. As soon as it started, it stopped. "Sir, the Spectre is appearing on my Navigational sensors, right in front of us." Jason looked at his console to confirm. "On screen." Having confirmed it, Jason adjusted the viewscreen to view the seemingly new arrival. "The Helm's chronometer reads 2414.03.10." Looking at his own console, he said, "Also confirmed. Hmm." Apparently, the general consensus was that they had travelled back in time six months. "This could be really bad," he said just loud enough so only his helmsman counterpart could hear him. If everything he knew about temporal mechanics was true, and if they had indeed just travelled into the past, there was about to be some serious problems ahead. Having been ordered to initate communications, he went over to the science console with his new First Officer. "Lieutenant Briggs, work with Lieutenant McKenzie and see if we don't have any past communications or any report from Starfleet concerning a ship coming from the past, or anything that could be related to the anomaly recurring here. As he searched, Jason's became more and more worried. Speaking directly to McKenize, "I'm not finding anything. This should have only taken a few minutes to find some record of another us in the past." (McKenzie) Jason shook his head. "We have a bigger problem. Even if we find record of ourselves in this timeline at this spot, we have another us roaming the galaxy at this very moment." He was thinking about the recent changes to the Mith crew. Some of the people had come from the Tulsa to work with them, and some of their own crew had left. No matter how often this happened, Kenny never got used to it. In all of his years on the ship, it seemed that crew rotation was much more common now than it had been in the past. Suddenly the ship began to shake. Although it was not all that violent, the fast build-up was worrying. Kenny paused the scan and started a more specific scan of the area to try and detect it as the Captain ordered the shields to go up. "We seem to be caught in something. It seems to be pulling us I can't seem to shake it." Said Rodriguez. “Starting a scan.” Kenny said, but just as it was starting, there was another large shake, almost knocking Kenny off his seat but he saved himself by grabbing the console. When he looked back at this screen, the scan was stopped, yet the console seemed undamaged. It was at this point that he noticed that the shaking had stopped. As he was trying to work out what happened with the scan, he heard commotion behind him, people saying that the Spectre was right next to them. Kenny turned his chair around on the spot to see the view screen and saw that indeed the Spectre was there. Kenny had no idea that was possible. "McKenzie, Verify is that the Spectre." “Aye Sir.” Kenny scan, scanning the Spectre’s ID. After a few seconds, the ID came back as genuine and Kenny knew how hard they were to fake. “Sir, It is the Spectre! I don’t understand how, but their ID checks out.” Rodriguez came in "The Helm's chronometer reads 2414.03.10, that’s 6 months into our past." “What?!” Kenny exclaimed and checked the chronometer as well. “Confirmed.” Kenny turned back to the screen and watched the two Captains speak to each other over the COMM. As they did so, the Science Chief turned back to his console and started to check more out about the ship which appeared to the Spectre. So far, his scans turned out to be true and he could not find anything to suggest that the ship was not the Spectre. Something was not right here, and he was determined to find out what was going on. Everything which he saw told him that this was the USS Spectre and that they had indeed past though some kind of time rift, or the Spectre had, but there was something which was niggling at the back of his mind that told him something was wrong, but he knew he was always a thinking of alternate reasons. Should we even be communicating with them, he though, if they had gone back in time? Kenny kept thinking about the Temporal Prime Directive but that was mostly to cover large jumps backing time. Six months was not that long, was it? Did the Temporal Prime Directive count if time travel was that short? It got Kenny thinking about how far back or forward do you go in time for the Temporal Prime Directive to count? As he was thinking, Lieutenant Syuvik approached him and Kenny sat up right and at attention. “Lieutenant McKenzie, check our sensor logs six month ago at the exact time we have now travelled and see if you can find any similar anomaly that happened.” “Aye Sir.” Kenny replied. He nodded to Briggs and they both got to work, their fingers moving fast over the consoles with confidence at what they were tasked with. However, after several minutes of checking the logs, it was clear that they could find very little information. “I'm not finding anything.” Said Briggs. “This should have only taken a few minutes to find some record of another us in the past.” “I’m not detected any records being erased. It’s possible this is the first time it’s happened, which might suggest this is a break in the normal timeline.” “We have a bigger problem. Even if we find record of ourselves in this timeline at this spot, we have another us roaming the galaxy at this very moment.” “Argh, the very thought makes my head spin.” After several more minutes they had finished with checking the logs, at lest for now, and Briggs called Syuvik over. “Ok we have a problem.” He said. “Any true record of us would have been mentioned in the logs of the Spectre that is in our true timeline." What though could have caused a temporal anomoly? The files had read only that the experimentation was genetically orientated, was there something else going on here that was not common knowledge perhaps? "I see", said the Captain in regards Alexanders explanation, "Clearly then whatever is occuring here right now, is also affecting the future and logically, the past", he added. "Has there been any anomalous activity in this area before our arrival? I don't know if we went through a worm hole we missed or what.", asked the Mithrandir's CO. The Captain quirked his head slightly, and then intuitively processed a command that had just popped up on his armrest console, damage control completed, reports clarified and processed. The Captain then went on to explain the occurences so far. "It is complicated, something has occured on the station that has created a fissure of some kind in the space time continuum, our away team is missing and events are proceeding in a non-logical manner", said the Captain, "With no basis for logic, I am afraid that we don't know precisely what we are dealing with here", he added. Spectre out=/\= "Alright then, Santiago, you will have the bridge, Syuvik, Briggs, and McKenzie, you three will go with me." "Sir, can I talk to you in private?" Will nodded as they headed to his ready room. (Reply None) (Posted by Will) (USS Mithrandir - Bridge - FO, Lieutenant Syuvik - 14:36) Syuvik was about to join the captain when Lieutenant McKenzie called him back. “Ok we have a problem.” McKenzie said. “Any true record of us would have been mentioned in the logs of the Spectre that is in our true timeline." He pointed to the screen. "The Spectre has made no mention of us at all. Which means that, in our timeline, this didn't happen. Us already being here has likely changed the future already and in essence, we will never return to this timeline. But we have a bigger problem. The Mithrandir from six months ago, is warping around the galaxy. We never saw ourselves. Whatever we do here, could likely have a profound impact on the universe. Our current goal right now, for us to continue to live and breathe, has to be to ensure that our doubles fall prey to the same phenomenon we just encountered and that we rejoin real time at that point. But nothing we do can affect what has already happened. Which means, we have to relive the last six months!” Kenny stood up also. “Possibly, however it is entirely theoretical that we may be able to travel back to the future if we can study the phenomenon which brought us here, but there is no way to say for sure unless we find what caused it.” Kenny said. Syuvik listened to the Lieutenant analysis of the situation. "I have two comments Lieutenant. First, what you have access related to the USS Spectre were public report. If there was indeed a temporal anomaly, I doubt the Admiralty would have made it public considering the risk of timeline infection. Anyone being informed of a ship coming into our reality could affect their own decision which would affect our own timeline. It won't be written in any report. At least not in the public ones. Maybe captain Alexander received private reports from the Admiralty, but he is the only one to have access to them. But I will take care of that. What I want you and your department to look for, in priority, is any sensors reports around that date that could be related in any way to a temporal anomaly. Once you have checked, inform me of the result." (Reply McKenzie) "Also, you said 'we must be sure that the other Mithrandir fall pray to the same anomaly'. If your conclusion is right, I'm not sure you are aware where reside the conditions for that conclusion to become true. There are two possibilities here. The first one is the fact there was no way, considering the circumstances, that the Mithrandir would not be caught in the anomaly. If this is the truth, then we have not disrupted the timeline and not only are we free to decide what will happen next, but the same circumstance will happen to the other Mithrandir meaning there is no way for the other Mithrandir not to fell pray of the same anomaly. The other possibility is for the anomaly to have been caused by chaotic space, or any other similar phenomena where the law of physics doesn't apply. If they doesn't apply, then the law 'the same cause has the same effect' would not be true anymore and not only would it cause a rupture in the timeline for our own us, but even if we were able to insure the Mithrandir would act exactly as we acted before the anomaly, they might not be caught by the anomaly and if they are, the consequence would be totally different because the law of physics would not apply. Therefore, one way or the other, the other Mithrandir should not be part of our consideration. Furthermore, if it's the later case, then it would be impossible to repeat the timeline. The causality would be changed. However, even if a different causality happen, we might still be successful at avoiding the future to be modified by the change in the circumstance that happened to the Mithrandir, and therefore avoid any lasting consequence of the time travel. So, all our deliberation must be about what we do, not what they should do, and have as a main purpose to avoid lasting consequence on the timeline." (NRPG: I'm sorry if I lost you there. Vulcan and time travel doesn't really go together and I'm trying to illustrate this fact here. I assume most Vulcan believe in determinism (everything, even people decision has already been determined by causality, so there is always only one timeline possible). However, Startrek has different alternate reality which would means the principle of determinism could be false. For a Vulcan, the only possible explanation for the dissimilitude in the alternate realities would come from chaotic space.... if the law of physics does not apply there, then causality could be affected in a way that create dissimilitude between realities. What is the truth, I don't know and I guess no one knows.....but hopefully, we are in a game, so our hands are not tight. Therefore, I will make Syuvik act according to what I believe would be the most logical conclusion a Vulcan would arrive at concerning what is happening here which is what I expressed here...). (Reply McKenzie) (USS Spectre - Bridge - Acting TAC/SC, Lt Walker Isengard - 14:37) Walker had run every battery of non-intrusive test that he could run while the two Captains were speaking, everything came out as it should. He was still suspicious, but the one test he most wanted to perform... he didn't dare. His mental shields were as tight as he could make them, and he had no intention of releasing them yet. After a couple of minutes, the Captain cut communications, having arranged for the senior crew to come aboard. "I will require you input also Mr Isengard, please attend the briefing at fifteen hundred hours, observation lounge", he asked. Isengard nodded, "I would also recommend a discreet increase in the guard." He replied. He paused for half a beat, "If they came through a rift, there is no guarantee they are ours. I would not rule out an alternate universe." (reply: CO, room for conversation) "Relief." He said as he stepped away from the security console. The relief officer he'd displaced immediately took over. The acting chief ran his hand briefly over the phaser that was always at his side, before departing the bridge for Transporter Room 1. You’ve lost me. Temporal anomalies always go around my head. However, I understand what you mean about the reports and I’m sure that it would not do any harm if we were to be allowed to look at them. If your worried about security, Briggs and I can keep the files to ourselves, and only share what we know with you or the Captain.” (reply Lieutenant Syuvik) “Once we have the reports, Briggs and I can start at once, and we will give you an hourly report.” (posted by Gavin Work) (USS Mithrandir - Bridge - FO, Lieutenant Syuvik - 14:38) While captain Alexander was discussing with captain T'vhor, Syuvik was seeing with Lieutenant McKenzie and Lieutenant Briggs if they could find anything in their database about what have been the same temporal anomaly happening in their timeline. Checking all the database would take several days, the were not going to have an answer soon. "Lieutenants, I put you in charge of revising everything on our database that could mention something about that anomaly. As you can't have access to the captain Alexander communication with the admiralty, I will do it. I want an update every six hours. It might take days before we have double checked everything, but there is, I believe no need to mention how important it is." said Syuvik to both Lieutenant McKenzie and Lieutenant Briggs. Syuvik went back to talk with the captain and listened at the end of the conversation he had with captain T'vhor. Once ended, Syuvik started. "Sir, can I talk to you in private?" (Reply Alexander) (NRPG: I assume Will doesn't mind going into his office to discuss the situation with his FO.....if there is a problem, I will change accordingly) Once on his officer, Syuvik thought about what would be the most logical order of discussion. Normally, if he talked to a Vulcan, the matter with the highest priority would come first. But with anyone else, it was probably better to keep the reflection the most likely to cause reaction at the last order, so to be sure the conversation would not end before all the points were discussed. It was therefore logical to start with the orders he gave. "First, sir, I took the liberty, which was my prerogative as a first officer, to order Lieutenant McKenzie and Lieutenant Briggs to go over our database to find any clue or trace that could be associated with a spacetime anomaly that would have occured on stardate 24140310 of our own timeline. They will report to me every six hours. I believe we should also check every reports we had from starfleet, including reports from the admiralty." (Reply Will) Then, come the subject Syuvik anticipated Will would not agree with his own conclusion. Vulcan and Human had such a different way to analyse and solve a problem. Nevertheless, it was his responsibility as an FO to give his opinion, even if he apprehended it would not be the final decision., "Sir, as first officer, it is not only my duty to give you my own analysis of the situation, but also to give my own analysis of your decision so that the better of the two decisions, according to your own very good reasoning, will came out of our discussion. Therefore, I say : that following my analysis of the situation and what entail the temporal prime directive, we must be considerably more careful that we have been so far. For the moment, we have no way to know if this travel back in time was a rupture or a continuity with the normal timeline, and until we find out, we have no choice but to act based on the possibility that has the highest importance in term of consequence. Among all the possibilitis that deserve consideration, the possibility of this being a disruption of the timeline must be the scenario on which we base our decision. Starting from there, the right action would be to limit all contact with people of this timeline including the USS Spectre. Contacting them could have already huge impacts on the timeline. We can't take that risk sir." (Reply Will) "Sir, I understand you trust captain T'vhor and I question neither his skill, nor his capacity to help us in the matter. However, even for a Vulcan, and he is only half-Vulcan, we are not objective and impartial to the point of being able to completely isolate an information so that it never influence in any way our own reasoning. Vulcan have a huge control over their reasoning, but they are not omnipotent. Sir, our brain process thousands if not millions informations every second. What you think is part of a reflection or a choice is most of the time only the upper part of the iceberg. Most people, even Vulcan, ignore most of what make them took that decision rather than another one, A slight change in the information the brain use in a deliberation can change the conclusion a person make. Now, if you consider how many deliberation or reflection a person make in his life, adding only one single information is very likely to change at least one of his future conclusion. So, I sontgly advise against going on the USS Spectre and talk about the anomaly. Subcautiously or surreptiously, what captain T'vhor will learn about us or about the anomaly might be just enough to change one of his future deliberation, if not more than one, and I believe there is no need to say what could be the consequence of a captain taking a different decision on the timeline. We cannot take that chance sir. There is way too much at risk." (NRPG: Damn I love logic! "That," she said firmly, "was definitely something special but if you don't mind, Oggie, it is the kind of special I am not wanting to repeat. Are you alright?" she added, remembering that Oggie was rather older and a lot less fit than she was. Oggie grunted as he unsuccessfully (at first) tried to lift himself off the ground. "Ditto, dear, and yes. Now Starfleet does NOT pay us enough to endure these shenanigans. Ohhh," he moaned as he managed to pull himself up against the wall and tried to get his breath back. Standing up, Zia planted both feet firmly on the deck and, reaching down, grabbed Oggie's arm in a firm grip. "Up you come," she said, yanking him to his feet. "I don't think it is a good idea to be too close to the door. Perhaps we should call the chief engineer as a matter of urgency so he can fix his machine?" Oggie grunted again as he pushed himself towards a comm-panel. "Marsh to Chief Gibbs. Emergency in F-5!" He frowned when after a second no response came. "Marsh to Commander Probie. Emergency in F-5!" No response. "Marsh to ... ANYONE?" he shouted into the comm-panel. "Oggie," Zia said slowly. "Would I be right in saying that we appear to be up a small inlet without wading in the shallow water?" Oggie's eyes moved upwards as he disseminated this. "Oh yes dear. But it doesn't help that the comm system seems to be down. Actually...." Oggie looked along the corridor. "There were three men working there when I arrived. They were working on the bottom panels, but now it looks as if they were never there. Hmmm. It sounds quiet. Cover your ears, dear." He took a deep breath and Zia clapped her hands over her ears just in time. "HELLLOOOO!" Oggie bellowed. "ANYBODY ABOUT?!" Don't you think that if the Mithrandir did accidently go back in time, we'd have a record of it, they'd keep that from us." replied Alexander Syuvik analysed the discourse of his captain in order to figure out what was his premises and perspective in order to understand why he came to such conclusion. And again, it didn't took long to figure out where they disagreement was originating from : perspective. "I understand sir that Human prefer to gamble on probability while Vulcan prefer to work with probability. You are thinking more on the short term, while we are thinking more on the long term. On the long term, to base your decision on probability rather than taking a risk on every of your decision has better overall efficiency and chance of success. But I'm ready to put that argument aside for the purpose of our discussion and rather argue on perspective. You are clearly thinking about us. But this is a subjective point of view. You are thinking about yourselves and the crew and you clearly doesn't take into consideration all the other persons living in both these reality that could be affected by own decision here and now. We, Vulcan are thinking in term of universal. What is the best for everyone in every timeline, not just what is better for us. But again, I would never convince you to take the universal point of view. So something you might agree more easily, you could think of it in this term : what is better for Starfleet rather than what is better for us. Do you believe our Starfleet or, even Starfleet from this reality would appreciate having a second Mithrandir ship modifying their timeline? They have the same temporal directive than we have. They would sanction you as well as our own starfleet will sanction you if we affect the timeline. So, captain, to adopt the same subjective perspective you adopt, the question is: are you ready to gamble your own career on the assumption that we are not disrupting the timeline? Wouldn't you conclude like I do, that we would be better to take more time and wait until we figure out if we are disrupting the timeline or not, rather than acting too quickly and on emotions?" "I'm not the most logical Captain, hell, I'm not the most logical human being, but I'm positive safeguards have been put in place by the Spectre crew. Now, we could argue about this for ages, but I'm telling you right now, we go. We had no contact with the Spectre during the last 6 months, so maybe just maybe, the right safeguards are in place, this is part of the normal timeline. You say it is to risky to go over there, I argue that it might be too risky not to go over there. What if not helping makes the timeline deviate. You can argue on or the other Lieutenant, but rather than argue, I say we take a risk." Syuvik apprehended that answer, but again, it wasn't like if it wasn't predictable. Accepting to serve on starfleet with a crew composed mostly with Humans, as well as most CO being human, Syuvik accepted that most of the decision would not be logical, but rather based on feelings and intuitions. There was also a clear code to follow. You must always obey your captain, whatever decision he take. But at the same time, the temporal prime directive was even higher in priority than the rule to obey his captain. However, despite he disagreed with his captain point of view, it was not like if his own opinion was unsound. Gambling was part of Humans, and therefore part of starfleet. Will had accepted the same conclusion Syuvik accepted, they should not disrupt the timeline. The difference, however, was how to accomplish that. For Syuvik, sacrificing time and themselves was a more logical choice, than trying to come back to their own timeline the fastest possible, asking help to the USS Spectre for that matter, while trying not to disrupt the timeline but nevertheless took a minor risk to disrupt it. Syuvik was now faced with a logical dilemna : which was the best course of action : accepting his captain decision, or consider is own view of what the temporal directive implied as more important than the hierarchy, and use whatever means necessary to prevent his own captain from disrupting the timeline? He would need time to answer that question, and for the moment, the risk was still low of affecting the timeline, so he could use a few hours of reflection before taking a decision. At the same time, Syuvik was asking himself if he should told his captain about his indecision. If truth was normally a logical choice, telling his captain he wasn't sure if he would obey could have a consequence for his captain to take safety precaution to avoid his own first officer to prevent what he was doing, and could therefore prevent Syuvik from accomplishing his job. The better was not to mention it, which was not lying either, but simply avoiding the question. "I understand your point of view sir." said Syuvik ~which doesn't imply I have come to agree to it. ~ thought Syuvik. "Now then we are running late, dismissed." replied Will. Syuvik took a few seconds to think again. "Sir, I would at least recommend that the meeting be only between you, me, captain T'vhor and his first and second officer. He smiled when he recognised the uniform of the man to be a Starfleet uniform but then the smile disappeared when he realised that the man must have snuck up on the both of them and he then also saw several marines behind the man. All wore side-arms. Oggie's eyes narrowed a bit as he instinctively took a step sidewards to cover the ACMO behind him-. “Who are you and what are you doing here?” Oggie examined the man for a second and noticed that he wore the three solids pips denoting him a Commander. But not a Commander that Oggie had even met or seen a picture of. He cleared his throat. "Our identities and our reason for being here are not of your concern, Commander, if indeed you are a Starfleet Commander. Never the less I am quite sure that you are not assigned to this station and as I am, I believe it is I who should be asking the questions. Unless you are the reason why I cannot contact my Commanding officer. That would explain your side-arms as well as the fact that you were sneaking up on me and my dear colleague here. Of course she had not met everyone in the short time she had been there, but Oggie had given her a throrough tour and the station was not that well populated. She would have expected to recognise some at least of people holding weapons on them. Her first thought, which was that they had come to find out who had been playing with the secret device, she dismissed as Oggie replied to the unknown commander and Zia realised that she had been correct in thinking that the people surrounding them were not assigned to the station. She glanced around. One man with a weapon she might have taken on happily enough, but several, most out of reach, were not an option she liked. Zia edged slightly further away from Oggie, as unobtrusively as she could, wanting the space to act if she needed to. She was also annoyed with herself having been so taken up with their situation that she had missed any indication that they were being approached, however stealthily. Having stated that he did not know the commander or the people with him, and voiced the thought that these strangers might be the reason that they had not been able to contact his commanding officer, Oggie drew himself up and, a little to Zia's surprise, demanded the surrender of the commander. From the corner of her eye Zia saw Oggie extend a hand but her own eyes were watching the commander closely. Mentally she gauged the distance between them and tried to calculate if she could reach him before he shot them both. Of course, the action would be moot whether she could or not, since he was only one of several. But it was not in her nature to do nothing if the alternative was to be killed. "Nothing personal, Sir," Oggie stated. "Just a Starfleet officer trying to do his duty, Commander. Which you should appreciate, if you are genuine." It was a pleasant smile, not a sinister or mocking one, she thought. Before the commander could say anything, however, Oggie cautioned her against doing anything untoward or reckless. She would have reassured Oggie that she much preferred being alive to the alternative, but the commander was speaking to them both, saying that he would not be surrendering, and introducing himself as the FO of the Spectre, Commander Andrew Williams. “I am sorry Ensign Marsh I will not be accepting your surrender today. My name is Commander Andrew Williams and I am the First Officer of the USS Spectre.” Zia raised her eyebrows in surprise. "Oggie, were you expecting the Spectre?" she asked. She wondered if the commander was suffering from memory loss. Or maybe he wasn't who he said he was, but then he should still know a simple fact like the stardate..."You can check on your tricorder," she added helpfully. My name is Commander Andrew Williams and I am the First Officer of the USS Spectre.” For a fraction of a second Oggie's eyes opened wide. He had not expected that. The man in front of him had reacted so natural, so ... believable. Oggie kept thinking of him as the man because Oggie was sure of one thing. He was NOT Commander Williams. There had been quite a cafuffle back when the USS Spectre had suddenly disappeared. Must have been something like 4 and a half years ago. Not that Oggie had any doubt that there had been a Commander Williams onboard of the vessel when it had disappeared but to believe that somehow a ship that had been missing for four and a half years had reappered without any mentioning of the re-appearance? Not very likely. Infact, very UNlikely. "Oggie, were you expecting the Spectre?" Zia's question broke Oggie's train of thoughts. "Uhh, no dear. The Spectre was not expected to arrive." Oggie shot her a quick glance then smiled. "But then again, Commander Probie was not my greatest fan so it is quite conceivable that he did not inform me of ship movements. To be honest, I only heard of your shuttle's arrival from the local hairdresser for instance." Luckily the 'Commander' shifted his attention to his men, indicating that they could stand down. ~So they don't want to kill us,~ Oggie thought with a imaginary sigh of relief. ~At least, that is something. Even if we don't know what they ARE after. But if we tag along we might find that out too.~ Oggie was studying the group, their reactions, their clothing. All perfect, all extremely believable. Someone must have gone to great lengths to orchestrate this charade. Somehow Oggie was pretty sure that if he pulled up Commander Williams file the photograph on it would show the face of the man in front of him. Maybe that was what took them so long to bring the Spectre 'back'. “Ensigns can you tell me what the star date is?” "Is this meant to be a trick?" Zia asked but before Oggie could react she responded: "It is 2413.02.10 of course." "You can check on your tricorder," she added. Oggie caught himself from sighing. That was a complication. She was new, she probably believed every word the 'Commander' was saying and why wouldn't she? Brought up in a secretive society, only to be released and find a new home with almost total openness? Of course she would be trusting. Perhaps even to the point of being naive. Somehow he had to raise her guard. She was too likely to blabber out any information the others were after. "Do you think he has all his playing cards with him?" Oggie frowned at the interuption but also at the requirement to re-translate her language. "Oh yes, dear. Our Commander Williams is indeed playing with a full deck." ~Unfortunately his cards are all face down though,~ he added in his mind as he studied the man's face until he thought of something. "Tell me, dear. Would you, as a woman, trust a man with a face like our Commander? You probably would. His face is known in our trade as an open and honest face. Did I tell you that I used to be a family counsellor before I joined up with Starfleet? Well, my dear, it turns out that 70% of men with open and honest faces tend to cheat on their partners. However, men with secretive facial features are much less likely to cheat. It's in the face, you see? Open faces tend to be believed more therefor will get away with telling more lies. That is a problem with us humans, I guess. If it looks too good to be true, it most likely is the complete opposite." Oggie smiled at her then, still smiling, turned towards the Commander. The ship was not here when we went in, surely we would have been aware if a starship had arrived unexpectedly, there would have been a lot of hustle and bustle, and it cannot have been expected or why would they send me on a runabout to the Keen if a starship was coming? So it was not expected and therefore there would have been a large fuss. And they cannot have arrived after we did and captured everyone, there would have been a lot of noise and fighting. For will though, as soon as he stepped of the transporter pad, it was a bit of a homecoming. He had served twice on board the beautiful ship known as the Spectre. It was here that he rose through the ranks. Twice he served her, and twice he was plucked away to be the First Officer of another ship. He was a young ensign at the helm, became third officer, later Second officer until he accepted the position on the USS Dennison. He later returned as a helmsman, before becoming Third Officer and Strategic Operations officer before becoming the First Officer on the Mithrandir. He grew up on this ship, made many lasting friends and had many mentors on board. From the now Boudicca Captain Capps, Captain Ktell his first Spectre CO, Captain T'Vhor, Commader Williams, Lt. Yayla Nollys, his old buddy Garry, hell, it was on the Spectre he first became aware of his now ex Jynea Kreug. Even his oldtime nemesis, Lt. H'Chir, he had fond memories of everyone he served with. He even designed the Spectre's Strategic Operations Center. He was happy to be back, though brief. Not as a crewman, but to be back on the Spectre, walking her halls, now as a Captain of his own ship, was like a proud alumni walking the halls of his high school or university after obtaining success in his career. While his First Officer had recommended not bringing a limited amount of people, Will overruled him. It would be intersting having a Vulcan for a first officer. Syuvik was so logical and calculating, Will on the other hand was very much a gut instinct person. He had brought along with him his Chief Science Officer, his former Chief Engineering Officer and now Chief Operations officer and of course the FO Syuvik. Will intentionally left Strat OPS officer Santiago, who while also a Spectre Alum, had just recently left the Spectre in this point in time, and former Spectre CONN Officer Lalo Rodriguez who served on the Spectre before going to the Academy as an Instructor. While he was sure Syuvik might wonder if Will considered the temporal ramifications, he did in fact weigh certain pros and cons, and figured it best if Will was the only former Spectre crew member to venture over to the Spectre. As he looked at his staff he leaned over and whispered to them. "No one is to mention anything about any events that happen bast today's stardate, we are here to learn and over guidance." Then walking over to Lieutenant Isengard, a face he knew, but someone he didn't interact much with during his time on the Spectre, he smiled. "Lieutenant, are you our escort," (reply Isengard) "Well then, if you don't mind, let's not leave Captain T'Vhor waiting any longer." He didn't want to overstep his authority, but he was going and he made his way to the doors of Engineering, behind him, half the engineering team looked like they were ready to go with him. "Hang on, I won't be long!", he said and he left Engineering and the silent warp core. A few months ago he would of cared about this, then again a few months ago, he would of already had his work out in the holodeck, something he had neglected for a long while now, but something had come over him. He felt lack lustre and drained, his sleep these past few months had been plagued with dreams of his ex-wife and his actions back on Ornaran. His guilt had consumed him, always a quiet person by nature he had practically become introverted to the point of having hardly any contact with anyone on board. A feat not so hard to accomplish on a ship which was constantly in such turmoil. Teverine knew something was wrong, but continued to deny it. He assumed this was Starfleet life and maybe he was going through a slouch he might overcome in time, he just felt like he was out of place, out of phase with everyone else. Teverine knew in his heart he needed to talk to a counsillor but he feared talking about his past and the actions which brought him here. He recently had a gnawing sensation somewhere deep inside telling him he did wrong, he did a bad selfish thing, this gnawing was growing everyday in him, eating him from the inside out. He glanced at his monitor and saw he was going to be late again for his shift and hurried out the door towards the labratory. Teverine felt in no rush as he strolled out of his room and walked towards the turbo lift. He was now accompanying Captain Alexander, Lieutenant Syuvik, and Lieutenant Mckenzie over to the Spectre. He wondered why they needed him, since at this point, with them being in the wrong part of the timeline, Jason would have expected very limited contact, but apparently, that was not the case. As ordered, he appeared at the designated time and transported over with the others. As the materialized, Jason stifled a yawn. Again, he thought about that nap, but time was of the essence, literally. "No one is to mention anything about any events past today's stardate. We are here to learn and offer guidance," the Captain said. Apparently, the Captain might also be having reservations about the time incursion. Jason nodded his agreement and followed the Captain. As they progressed forward, he motioned to his first officer so that the latter would know to slow his pace a little. "Why are we here?" he asked, indicating to himeself, Mckenzie and Syuvik. "I would expect that this was a meeting between Captains." (reply Syuvik) "Look, I understand that the Captain holds Captian T'Vhor in high regard, but we can't ignore that us even being here is screwing the timeline up. McKenzie and I searched the records and found no trace of our incursion." Jason let out a sigh. "I just have a really bad feeling about this." Also one part of him really wanted to stun them especially Marsh who was beginning to get on his nerves. Then get into the Cargo Bay and try to sort this out because he could feel his head ache starting again. ~Come on your not four stop, acting like a child and start acting like an officer. This is irritating why can’t I just be back in sickbay. There is one way to get a definite answer that there has been time travel with out using the computer or call the Spectre which we not do at this time.” ~OW yes that’s what’s it’s called~ “We will scan the area for chronometric particles which are an indication of time travel as they exist primarily in the fourth dimension which is time. Okay?” He turned to Smithson and motioned him forward. “Can you scan the area for chronometric particles.” (Reply Smithson) He looked back at Marsh and Kirrin. “You can use one of our tricorders if you want but that would just confirm your suspicious nature Ensign Marsh.” He gave Marsh a flash of a grin. ~I really hope this works because we are running out of options fast~ (Reply Marsh, Kirrin) (Reply Marsh, Kirrin, Smithson any) (Posted by Robbie) (Station Echo One Zero - Level F, Section 5 - Corridor outside Cargo Bay – ACMO, Ensign(jg), Zia Kirrin – 15:02) Commander Williams (if that was indeed who he was) was clearly losing patience with the two of them. He stated that they needed to scan the area for chronometric particles to prove whether or not there had been time travel. He turned to one of his companions and motioned the man forward, asking him to do the scan. (Reply Smithson) The commander looked back at Oggie and Zia, and commented with a wry grin that they would be welcome to use one of his party's tricorders but that would probably just confirm Oggie's suspicions. Feeling that the commander had a point, since even if it worked they had no way of knowing whether or not it was a set-up, Zia nodded. She was still not sure what she thought but if this was a made-up story to fool her and Oggie it was beginning to seem remarkably complex, when all the strangers had really needed to do was take them prisoner. ~Or shoot us,~ she thought grimly. "One thing, Commander," she said hesitantly. "If you are right and there is something in the cargo bay which has caused us to travel in time, maybe you should not go in there? Because if you are right then whatever is in there might still be there and still be active and if it is, who is to say that you will not be sent who knows when in time?" She was not keen on the idea that if the commander was correct, that he and his party might all disappear and leave her and Oggie alone on the station, marooned a year and more away from when they had entered the cargo bay. Then something else struck her, which she had been too shocked by all that had happened to consider before. ~If he is right, my family must believe me dead!~ She bit her lip. If this was all true, then she needed to tell them she was alive as a matter of urgency. And, she supposed, her place on the USS Keen would have been taken and they wouldn't need her. Then she would have to wait to be sent to another ship, if Starfleet still wanted her that is, and then there were all her things and... ~I don't know which is worse!~ Zia thought miserably. ~Either the commander is lying and we are in real trouble here, or he is telling the truth and we are still in real trouble here!~ (Reply Marsh, Smithson, Williams, any) (Posted by Liz Geuken) (Station Echo One Zero - Level F, Section 5 - Corridor outside Cargo Bay –FO, Commander Andrew Williams – 15:04) "One thing, Commander," "If you are right and there is something in the cargo bay which has caused us to travel in time, maybe you should not go in there? With Lieutenant McKenzie busy at preparing himself for the sejour on the USS Spectre, Ensign Jennifer Bates was kind enough to insure the information was coming through him. There was one thing that annoyed Syuvik more than anything else. He was still hearing in his mind Captain T'vhor saying the law of physics seemed to not have applied. If it was indeed true that the law of physics didn't applied, his Vulcan logic would be as blind as a ship without navigation. It would be like being crazy without the power to change anything. There was nothing a Vulcan.......disapprehended more than the lack of control, and without logic to guide deliberation and actions, he would have no control over what they should do. Nevertheless, for the moment, the sciences scans and logs did not indicated anything that correlated captain T'vhor's comment. The ship was going steady according to the latest engineering and navigation reports, and there was no sign of any permanent anomaly. However, captain T'vhor was probably in the vicinity for a longer time than the USS Mithrandir and his knowledge of the sector was probably way better than their own. Looking a few times at Lieutenant McKenzie, it seemed there wasn't much on his side either. For the moment, Syuvik assessed the probability of events or of potential outcomes was impossible to predict as they had little knowledge of their situation. It makes any tentative to deliberate about what to do useless unless they had a better knowledge of what was happening here. This knowledge was already enough to tell what needed to be done, priority was to be put on collecting data, but until those data were more precise, all they could do was wait.....well all a Vulcan could do was wait. Somehow, it seemed that Captain Alexander had not come to the same conclusion, judging by his own attitude. ~How could he know or conclude what to do if we know absolutely nothing about our situation?~ asked to himself Syuvik. Syuvik listened to the conversation, even if he disapproved his captain decision. His silence during the first minutes of the conversation certainly showed that, from his own point of view, there wasn't much to say on their side. All they could do was gathering the thoughts and inforrmation from the Spectre crew, that would help them go back to their timeline. That was what captain Alexander would be probably asking, making it pointless for Syuvik to mention it. However, there was another thing that was catching Syuvik interest. What would be the Spectre point of view on that matter, and especially T'Vhor point of view. Somehow, he hoped the half-vulcan would share his own reasoning and would try to convince Will that the best was to avoid contact. But the fact he accepted them on his ship already suggested otherwise. Anyway, it was Syuvik intention to not hesitate to know each of their point of view in order to decide what he needed to do. He shot a glance at the young Star-fleet officer at his side before looking at the Commander. "And what are we supposed to be doing when we go in? Smash up everything? Turn off the machine? Do you know how to do that safely? Do you have any idea how that .... thing .. works? You might find that one and one isn't always two, Commander. Time is, as I have been told, tricky. Did you know, for instance, that when this .... thing .. catapulted us through time, it was in fact not working? The core was just inside a box, hadn't been connected to anything and certainly wasn't powered. So how then could it have done this? Although it was clear from the energy field that somehow the core was the cause of that field. So, turning a machine off, that works when it isn't even turned on might not be the right thing to do. Who knows, turning it off today may have been the cause of the interruptions in time in the first place." Oggie shrugged. "I know that I have no idea how those chromo-thingies are supposed to react which suggest to me most strongly that I shouldn't even be thinking about interfering with them. The only one I would trust interferring with it is Professor Zigura, who was the lead scientist of this project. But if you can't find him, there are a few others you might try first." Oggie grimaced. "I had the misfortune of having to analyse a young Star-fleet Officer. Bit of a problem case, to be honest, and I'm not sure that I managed to change him around for the better. But he was, allegedly. considered quite brilliant by his peers regarding working with time fields. It turns out that there is a distinct order of hierarchy within time-field researchers. Professor Zigura was at the top of that hierarchy, he apparently knew things about time that most of his fellow researchers couldn't even comprehend. And with him out of the way ....." Oggie fell silent for a second. "I had a few words with the good professor whilst he was setting up this project on this station." The rotund counsellor closed his eyes trying to remember that specific conversation, which was a bit tricky as the conversation had also involved a rather large number of alcoholic beverages. "Doctor Heldstrom," he suddenly said, counting down on his fingers. "Zigura was saying a lot of good things about him, then Master Clachie, Professor Glicka, Doctor .... oh what was his name ... Bersand, I think, could have been Borstand. Yes, that was the hierarchy, Zigura at the top then Heldstrom, then Clachie, then Glicka and then Bersand ... or Borstand. Ohh, and John Linskens, of course. The one I told you about before? A bit of a loner and quite a few problems with authority and a hatred of Marines that he does not want to get rid of. His pet-peeve, so to speak. Zigura called him a loose canon, did you know? Uncontrollable. Uncontrollable but brilliant. Anyway. If have no idea where either of these scientists could be found, apart from John Linskens, if he took my advice, which I seriously doubt, and left Star-fleet. Last I heard, he was on station K7, so who knows where his is now." Oggie shrugged apologetically. "But might I suggest that you try to contact one of those scientists before you do anything ..... rash? And whilst you are trying to contact them, we could always investigate the good professor's quarters for any related information that he may have left behind. If I remember correctly, he always had this little button computer with him that he used to record his thoughts and ideas on." Another shrug. "Of course, I have no way of forcing you, so you have to do what you think is best. Wait half an hour so that we can search the good professor's quarters and see if we can contact one of the scientists or we go in guns blazing, so to speak. Your choice." Oggie looked at Kirrin. "Not that I would even consider forcing you to act in a way you would not want to, my dear. There is such a thing as respect for others, you see? You decide whether you want to follow the good Commander or not." The officer found that having multiple limbs was an invaluable aid in Its work. As an energy being, directly interacting with anything physical was ordinarily outside Algol's natural existence. The Interface Suit was modular, and had been designed by a team of very respectable Starfleet Engineers to accommodate as many as 4 pairs of arms... though Algol had never had occasion to use all of the Manipulator Modules presently stowed in his 'Quarters'. Physicals, or 'Solids', had a tendency to speak to the Head Module (when Algol even used it). Some Physicals found the absence of an actual face disconcerting. Emotions were a difficult concept for Algol. To a Medusan, thought equalled existence. Feelings seemed rather to ephemeral for Algol to pay much heed to. Though in cases were teamwork or diplomacy were called for, Algol would integrate the 'head' into the Interface Suit. Algol actually preferred the use of the suit to any free-floating energetic manifestation. Apart from one minor inconvenience -- when Algol first came aboard the Spectre, and a crewman stowed the suit with Algol in it in a Cargo Bay -- the Interface Suit allowed the Medusan officer to interact with anyone aboard. The old way of having any sort of dialog with a non-Medusan required a telepathic 'possession' of a Vulcan or other such psychic Solid. The prototype suit solved that problem. When not called upon to assist in other matter, Algol was usually working in Astrophysics. The Spectre seemed to lack any dedicated compartment such as Stellar Cartography or Astrometrics. As a Medusan, though, any such room was essentially unnecessary. Medusans had an inherent sense that made them the quintessential navigators of the universe. The present circumstances aboard made for an interesting course of study, however. There was a temporal inconsistency to be examined. Time and Space were, of course, part of the same continuum, but the fluctuations now evident to Algol's perceptions were quite different from what It had researched previously. (Some crewpersons referred to the Medusan as 'He' or 'Him', but 'It' was far more appropriate). After the brief discussion, Kenny was not sure if it was that or some kind of muted argument, Captain T’Vhor turned back to the table and spoke to Syuvik. Commander and First officer of the USS Mithrandir-A. I also am not in my time, I should be 6 months in the future. And yes I have broken some time travel directives by engaging with the Spectre and coming on board, so yes I should be on the Mithrandir-B's bridge right now. So I understand that I am not where I am supposed to be, and I we can discuss my repercussions in privater Sir, and I take full responsibility, but no matter where I am or not supposed to be I can't turn a blind eye to a ship in need of aid." (reply Sevant) As will and the Admiral's conversation ended the attention shifted to discussion of the situation. Will sat and listened as his Vulcan first officer and Captain T'Vhor discussed the situation at hand. Will wanted to interject his thoughts, but he sat back, interested in seeing how Syuvik handled himself as First Officer in this kind of setting. "Mr Syuvik", said the Captain turning his attention now to the Vulcan first officer, "I trust that you have ratified this matter accordingly, and are fully aware of what this means now for the Mithrandir's crew?", T'Vhor asked "I have established a quantity of possibilities that could explain what have happened, but the information we have collected as of now are insufficient to attribute probability to any of those possibilities. There are a lot of factors to take into account, and as we have been able to gather information only during the last 30 minutes, it will take more time to gather them and eliminate several of those possibilities to bring them inside a workable frame. Being in the dark as we are, to deliberate about what has happened would be illogical for the moment. Gathering information, that would be the most logical course of action." "Indeed", said T'Vhor, "Our situation here is... out of the ordinary to say the least, your arrival here has complicated matters somewhat, but was unavoidable nonetheless. We must endeavour to rectify the space time continuum. However, our most pressing need right now is to address the immediate problem at hand, and that is to bring our people home and find out just what has happened here to cause this situation" "Captain T'vhor, if you have already established objectives that are prior to other important objectives, it is logical to conclude you have a far better knowledge of what have happened here and what is the situation. I believe it necessary for you to at least brief us on the situation. You know as well as I do that from the same premises there is only one conclusion, so if you share with us your information, or in other words, your premises, we would probably come to an understanding, at least about part of what we should be doing in the short term." "The information is available to you via the computer Mr Syuvik, the Spectre was called to investigate a loss of communication with the station, when we arrived we found no sign of life", began the Captain. "Our away team then went missing, our systems seemingly being affected also by emanations of a kind coming from the station itself. The Marines were dispatched to investigate and we have now resumed contact with some of our away team members", said the Captain. "However, whatever is occuring here is affecting more than the local spacetime, and from the data made available to me, it would be logical to assume that Starfleet know more about the experimentation here than they are willing to admit" "So this is part of the answer to my previous question, the station could probably cause other anomalies which could cause other spacetime rupture and affect other timelines or alternate realities. Logic requires that we sacrifice our owns to protect all the other timelines and realities that exists. This is definitely a logical conclusion, supposing we are not surpassing logic itself. Captain T'Vhor, what do you know about those anomalies?" "It is obvious that the answers do not lay here on our ships but over there on the station", he said, "I propose that we send an Engineer to assess why the station is on minimal power, and also to repair the stations systems. That way we may hopefully gain insight into what has occured" "I concur, but we shouldn't send the Engineer alone. I hesitate sending more men than needed if you are having trouble over there with communication from time to time, but with communication back up, well it may not be a one Engineer job. I think Briggs could handle a small team with a one or two man security escort to get the job done. Though whether it would be wise to mingle staff or even send the Mithrandir crew to other locations when at present we aren't clear on what our effect here has on the time stream. I don't know" Will paused, "What I do know is we need to find out what is going on over there. Obviously you know more of the situation than I do, but my crew is willing at at your disposal. We will do what it takes to get the job down. Though I would like to send some science personnel to see if we can't find anything pertinent about getting us back home to our point in time." His choice of words were not indicating clearly what was the exact extension and intension he had in mind while pronouncing the words "where you are suppose to be". As it was his only sentence, it was furthermore impossible to deduce the correct interpretation from the background. Syuvik was left to wait until the admiral specified if he meant they were not suppose to be contacting the USS Spectre, or rather there were not suppose to be on the ship. However, as the admiral didn't said much, the conversation went on, and Captain T'vhor continued. His first question was addressed to him. "Mr Syuvik, I trust that you have ratified this matter accordingly, and are fully aware of what this means now for the Mithrandir's crew?", T'vhor asked. The assumption was correct....of course it was, it was the logical things for a Vulcan to do and captain T'vhor certainly knew Syuvik would be no exception. As it was though nobody really knew what had transpired on research station Echo One Zero... and that included the Captain. "The information is available to you via the computer Mr Syuvik, the Spectre was called to investigate a loss of communication with the station, when we arrived we found no sign of life", began the Captain. (Reply Syuvik, IYW) "Our away team then went missing, our systems seemingly being affected also by emanations of a kind coming from the station itself. The Marines were dispatched to investigate and we have now resumed contact with some of our away team members", said the Captain. "However, whatever is occuring here is affecting more than the local spacetime, and from the data made available to me, it would be logical to assume that Starfleet know more about the experimentation here than they are willing to admit" (Reply Syuvik, Any) The Captain glanced around at those assembled, part hoping that someone might add something pertinent. The Admiral seemed uncertain, although clearly concerned. Perhaps he knew something about the Captain's latter statement, but then perhaps not. The Captain began again. "It is obvious that the answers do not lay here on our ships but over there on the station", he said, "I propose that we send an Engineer to assess why the station is on minimal power, and also to repair the stations systems. That way we may hopefully gain insight into what has occured" (Reply Syuvik, Any) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Observation Lounge - Mithrandir FO, Lieutenant Syuvik - 15:12) "The information is available to you via the computer Mr Syuvik, the Spectre was called to investigate a loss of communication with the station, when we arrived we found no sign of life", began the Captain. It was both impolite, and not the appropriate time to look at those information and therefore, Syuvik continued to listen to the captain. "Our away team then went missing, our systems seemingly being affected also by emanations of a kind coming from the station itself. The Marines were dispatched to investigate and we have now resumed contact with some of our away team members", said the Captain. "However, whatever is occuring here is affecting more than the local spacetime, and from the data made available to me, it would be logical to assume that Starfleet know more about the experimentation here than they are willing to admit" Syuvik was right. Captain T'Vhor knew something he didn't. If he said recovering his team and taking care of what happened here was the priority over the spacetime rupture, it was based on a very logical conclusion : the station was probably responsible for the anomaly, and could be responsible for more anomalies, and therefore more spacetime ruptures. Logically, more spatial rupture automatically meant that the needs of the many overweight the need of the few. It was better contaminating both T'vhor and Syuvik spacetime even more than creating more spacetime ruptures that would cause more alternative realities to be altered. However, there was a flaw in his logic, or rather an absence of flaw which was a flaw. Spacetime rupture could only be explained by the fact the laws of physics were disrupted. Otherwise, the change in spacetime would have already been determined by causality and would have therefore be part of a continuous timeline, not a rupture of it. But if the laws of physics weren't applying anymore....then logic had nothing to hold on to. When the laws of physics doesn't apply, the rules of causality and the predictability of what might happen next is thrown by the window too. And the Vulcans' worst nightmare become reality : they have to suspend their own judgement or deliberation. Seemed somehow that Syuvik needed to remember his parents teaching, something he swear never remember again, considering all the troubles it caused. It was ironical that Syuvik always thought being raise in a V'tosh'katur community would precisely allow him to confront such a situation where Vulcans are completely blind, but the moment he was in it, he was not really ready. Also, Captain T'vhor didn't seem to had that difficulty. His deliberation and decision was already taken : the station had the priority. How could he has come to this conclusion, Syuvik didn't understood. Either it was a logical mistake, or it was an illogical decision from his part, but either case, logic could not come to a decision... not when there is no laws of physics or no truth to hold on to. Unless the laws of physics were intact, and the timeline was not a rupture, but a continuity, but how could he be so certain? He needed to clear it out with him, but it was probably better to wait after the meeting, so not to importunate the others with all this logical deliberation. Syuvik preferred to let other talk first. Once they have asked their question, Syuvik continued. "So this is part of the answer to my previous question, the station could probably cause other anomalies which could cause other spacetime rupture and affect other timelines or alternate realities. Logic requires that we sacrifice our owns to protect all the other timelines and realities that exists. This is definitely a logical conclusion, supposing we are not surpassing logic itself. Captain T'Vhor, what do you know about those anomalies?" The Captain glanced around at those assembled, part hoping that someone might add something pertinent. That way we may hopefully gain insight into what has occured" After the meeting, Syuvik approached T'vhor. "Captain T'Vhor, can I have a word with you? There is a part of your reasoning that you haven't mention that I would like to hear, at least to know where you stand." (Reply T'vhor). But since the last mission something had been troubling him and he could not put his finger on it. Teverine walked without looking so absorbed in his own woes, he hardly noticed he was almost at his station, he only stood still enough to hear the woosh of the doors opening, when he realised he did not even really remember how he got there. In some part of his mind Teverine acknowledged that there where others at work in the room, but he hardly noticed anybody nowadays, he briefly look down at his uniform with a slight irritation at his own appearance, then again came the pang of anger, the defiance against the conformist nature of his position and that of Starfleets regulations. He almost gasped in shock and surprise at such a though striking him, when all thoughts ceased as he heard his name being mention. "Afternoon, Tolqu. I was just going to get a drink and a snack, can I get you something?" The question threw Teverine for a moment and quick thoughts of his old friend back at the academy briefly flashed before his minds eye. He felt the bile rise in his throat as he prepared a savage quip, but the intial shock of his previous thoughts changed his mind, he felt tired and indeed he hadn't eaten properly in a long while. He felt disturbed at his own horrid thoughts to something he had worked so hard to get to. He suddenly realised he must of been standing for some time, looking up at Macbeth. He only knew her by name and nothing more about her, he noticed she had an abundance of hair and weakly smiled. "Yes thank you, an Ornaran Tea would be suitable, as to the snack i'll let you decide." It wasn't long before his general investigation of his station brought up the fact that the Mirthandir warp core was still operational. Noone had informed them that power was being drained from their systems and that the Spectre had powered down their warp system to prevent the drain. "Computer, scan the Mithrandir, is there anyone in Engineering?", he said pressing a few buttons that displayed a map of the Engineering Section. A few blips appeared on the map that indicated there were indeed personnel. Surely they would have noticed the drain? It didn't matter, "Open a channel... to… that engineering station.", he said pressing on the map and the channel flickered open and an Engineer appeared on the screen, "Um yeah hi, look, notice that power drain coming from your warp core…its being directed to the station and you'd probably want to stop it before it gets out hand.", he said at the slightly confused officer on the screen. "Please, just shut down your warp core…we can discuss it afterwards.", he said hoping they would take a look at their readings and listen to him. NM M'Elise shook her head, "I was conducting extensive scans of the Phenomena, i was trying to get as much data as i could before i had to shut down, its fascinating" tapping the controls, the warp core slowed down, "i have overridden the system it will not increase power output, just give me a couple more minutes, on this and i will send you my results" after a minute she shut down the core, and smiled, "i have my readings, now, i wanted to know what sort of drain it was, whether natural or artificial, it will take some time to analyze the data but i believe i have enough to go on with (Reply from Remae Ktell) (Posted by Shaylee) (USS Spectre - Science Department, Laboratory 2 – SciO, Ens(jg) Catriona Macbeth - 15:17) Cat found herself unexpectedly waiting for a reply to her question, asking Tolqu if she could get him something from the replicator. He regarded her in silence for some moments, long enough for Cat to wonder if she, too, needed to tend to her appearance. As the silence between them lengthened to become almost uncomfortable (at least as far as Cat was concerned), Tolqu suddenly seemed to come to a conclusion and offered her a weak smile. "Yes thank you," he said, "an Ornaran Tea would be suitable, as to the snack I'll let you decide." "OK," Cat nodded amenably as she walked over to the replicator in the corner and ordered Tolqu's Ornaran Tea and a hot chocolate for herself. After a moment's thought she added two slices of carrot cake with frosting, then carried the goodies over to her workstation. "Pull up a chair," she invited. "There seems to be some to-do up on the Bridge and about three-quarters of an hour ago something seemed to go through the ship kind of 'touching' everyone but aside from Vela, who's telepathic, no one in here felt much more than a sort of a mental knock, then a tingle which lasted maybe a few seconds. Vela's gone off with a migraine though. Mind you," Cat added a little maliciously, "Vela seems to get a headache if you look at her the wrong way so I can't be sure it was the whatever-it-was." She paused and sipped her chocolate. "Mmm, that's good! Anyway, since Gronk's up on the Bridge and John was fiddling around with something for him, I haven't had a lot to do." Cat paused, took a bite of the carrot cake, and looked shrewdly at Tolqu. He looked like something the cat dragged in and Cat was aware that over the last month or so he seemed to have changed from a neat, if rather uptight, personality to the haggard-looking man in front of her. The lab techs were beginning to talk about it, nothing much at the moment but it wouldn't be long, Cat knew, before someone more senior noticed. But she didn't really know him that well, certainly not well enough to ask personal questions like 'why are you looking like a targ's dinner these days?' "How's the tea?" she asked, hoping to draw him out a bit. (Reply Tolqu anywhere, any) (Posted by Liz Geuken) =========================================================================
