He listened to the conversation for a little before deciding an engineer would just be in the way. "I don't see how I could be of help here, So I think I'll head for engineering." Aldlar waited to be excused, remembering that he was headed for deck 13. (Reply Any) (Posted by John Smith) (USS Spectre - Outside Medical Research - Ensign Alexander - 17:52) After Ensign Durgil had left, Michael began to instruct Ensign Samhan on the decontamination protocols. Michael did a very thorough job and it caused 10 minutes of time to pass. Once they arrived at their destination however, Michael was called away to Security Station Alpha. As he left, he gave Ensign Samhan one last piece of advice. "Just make sure you put on a containment suit, and then when you go inside just introduce yourself and tell them you are there to help." (reply Samhan) And with that he was off back to the security station. (reply Samhan) (posted by Will Banowsky) (USS Spectre – Medical Research – Lt. JG Matthew Santiago – 17:53) “Lt Santiago, I understand we don’t have time for complete introductions, but I am Chief Petty Officer Rock in Security, how may I assist you.” "You can go back in time and tell me to not go to Sickbay when I got off bridge duty." Matthew said with a little chuckle at the end. (reply Rock iyw) "What I need you to do is take another blood sample from the incapacitated lieutenant and then place it into the viewing terminal adjacent to this one. We are going to to try two different solutions, and monitor which one works best, if at all." While Rock was getting the blood sample, Matthew began to think what he might be able to do to slow down the virus. From what he gathered it was flu like in nature. So he had to attack it that way. What he wouldn't give for still being a tactical officer. It would have saved him some trouble. As he glanced at CPO Rock preparing the sample, he noticed another person enter in. "Hi, I'm the new Counselor, Ensign George Samhan. I was told there was a contamination problem here, and I offered to help. What can I do?" "Umm, Ensign, lets see, what kind of medical knowledge do you have, because I'm going to have you help Chief Rock at the other terminal as we try and develop some kind of way to neutralize this damn virus. So tell me, do you have Medical knowledge, or are you just a straight up Shrink?" (reply Samhan) (reply Rock, Samhan) (posted by Will Banowsky) (USS Spectre - Outside Medical Research - Ensign Samhan - 17:53) As George and Michael left the transporter room Michael Alexander gave a thorough instruction on the USS Spectre's Decontamination Protocols. George was grateful for the instruction, though he felt much of it was obvious. Regardless, it was enough to make George feel comfortable in his first job on the Spectre, and he began to slowly swell up in pride. By the time they had arrived outside Medical Research Michael Alexander was called away to a security station, but before he left he said, "Just make sure you put on a containment suit, and then when you go inside just introduce yourself and tell them you are there to help." George only nodded as Michael returned to his post. Next to the entrance was a clear closet door, and the decontamination suits were hung inside. George opened the door and began to put the suit on. The suit was larger than he was used to, and bulky. He also took the time to make sure everything was closed. When he was satisfied he entered into Medical Research. (Reply Any) (Posted by Tim Callow) (USS Spectre – Medical Research – Security, CPO Jaret Rock – 17:54) "You can go back in time and tell me to not to go to Sickbay when I got off bridge duty." Matthew said with a little chuckle at the end. Rock had known many people that would make jokes during an intense situation, he however was not one. He looked at the Lt and smirked with a humph sound to indicate a small laugh. "What I need you to do is take another blood sample from the incapacitated lieutenant and then place it into the viewing terminal adjacent to this one. We are going to to try two different solutions, and monitor which one works best, if at all." Jaret returned to the medical case and took another instrument out to collect more blood. He walked over to the unconscious body and pressed the tool against the neck, and withdrew some DNA. He turned his body slowly as the decontamination suit was bulky and was constantly rubbing against other items in the room. Reaching the terminal he placed the vile, which split apart from the medical instrument, into it. The computer began to start right away with the analysis. It however would take a few minutes for it to be completely done. As CPO Rock waited another officer, an ensign, entered into the room. The new Ensign and Lt Santiago spoke to each other but Jaret ignored their conversation as the results were beginning to scroll through the screen viewer. “Sir, this analysis is finished but I have no idea what I am reading?”, Rock said interrupting Lt Santiago’s conversation. (reply Santiago , Samhan, any) (posted by Calvin) (USS Spectre - Medical Research - Ensign Samhan - 17:56) George walked in and took a quick look around. Once he was sure the attention was on him he said, "Hi, I'm the new Counselor, Ensign George Samhan. I was told there was a contamination problem here, and I offered to help. What can I do?" (Reply, Any) (Posted by Tim Callow) (USS Spectre – Medical Research – Lt. JG Matthew Santiago – 17:58) After listening to the Ensigns Medical knowledge, Matthew simply nodded, he was going to do the best he could with the team he had. “Sir, this analysis is finished but I have no idea what I am reading?”, Rock said interrupting Lt Santiago’s conversation. "What you are seeing is the virus inside the blood stream, particularly that of the unconscious Lieutenant. What we are going to do now, is try different methods of treatment on both the sample I have, and the one you two have to devise a way to hopefully develop some sort of cure and vaccine." (reply Samhan, Rock iyw) "The only problem about the vaccine, is well, you need a test subject for that, since you are basically injecting a weakened version of the virus into the body, so that the body can fight it off, destroy it and create the necessary antibodies to fight it off in the future. But we will come to the issue of 'volunteering' later. First thing first is we need to find a way to combat this." Matthew then entered some data into a nearby PADD and handed it to Ensign Samhan. "Ensign I want you and Chief Rock to use the treatments listed in this PADD on the sample, should be very simple, everything you need is in this room. The Monitor display should show you if its working or not." (reply Samhan) "Alright then you two get to work!" Matthew then began to work on his own list, hoping that he would find something that worked. (reply Samhan, Rock) (posted by Will Banowsky) (USS Spectre – Medical Research – Ensign JG George Samhan – 17:59) "Umm, Ensign, lets see, what kind of medical knowledge do you have, because I'm going to have you help Chief Rock at the other terminal as we try and develop some kind of way to neutralize this damn virus. So tell me, do you have Medical knowledge, or are you just a straight up Shrink?" George looked to see Chief Rock studying a blood sample as he said, "Not as much as a doctor, but as a psychiatrist I am required to have relatively thorough medical knowledge so I can prescribe medication. In short, I can help. But... Chief Jaret Rock finished with the sample and interrupted, "Sir, this analysis is finished but I have no idea what I am reading?” "What you are seeing is the virus inside the blood stream, particularly that of the unconscious Lieutenant. What we are going to do now, is try different methods of treatment on both the sample I have, and the one you two have to devise a way to hopefully develop some sort of cure and vaccine." George nodded, standard biology. The problem was that finding the proper strain of virus to dilute administer as a vaccine might take too much time. They would need some luck to do it quickly enough. "First thing first is we need to find a way to combat this." Matthew entered some data in a PADD and handed it to George. He took a quick look at the information. "Ensign I want you and Chief Rock to use the treatments listed in this PADD on the sample, should be very simple, everything you need is in this room. The Monitor display should show you if its working or not." George saw there were four potential treatments, if this was all there were, they got a whole lot of luck. "Alright, this should be simple enough." (Reply Santiago) He turned to Chief Rock, "How would you like to do this? Should we split up and take two treatments each, or would you like to work with me? Do you think you have the training to do it yourself?" Things were not going as planned. Her vitals were beginning to fluctuate badly. He injected her with the hypospray again and watched the monitors closely. ~Come on, Come on. This is not the time to start being silly~ He watched at the her vitals slowly began to stabilise. he was not out of the woods yet and he would have to keep a close eye on her. He he looked over at Rock and Santiago and saw that they had been joined by another person. ~More the merrier~ He glanced back at Amari and was satisfied that she was stable at least for the moment. "Alright then you two get to work!" He heard Santiago give out his instructions to the other two. ~Lets see how we are doing~ He got up from Amari and walked over to Santiago. "How are we doing Lieutenant?" (Reply Santiago) (Reply Samhan, Rock, Santiago) (Posted by Robbie) (USS Spectre - Deck 13, Main Engineering - Ensign (jg) Aldlar Durgil - 18:00) Aldlar stepped out of the turbo-lift. He glanced around, seeing the various engineering staff bustle about, keeping the ship at peak capacity. He asked for some schematics of the ship, and he received some. He began to walk out, taking a preliminary glance at the schematics. He stepped into the turbolift and began to issue the order to take him to his quarters. Then he relized that the person who greeted him had been interupted by the alarms when he reached that part. He decided to head for the mess hall to "Mingle" as it were, with the people there and try to fit in. He issued the order and the turbo lift began to move. (Reply None) (Posted by John Smith) (USS Spectre – Medical Research – LT. JG Matthew Santiago – 18:01) "Alright, this should be simple enough." "Easier said than done Ensign, Easier said than done. "We are trying a variety of different methods to try and see what might have an effect on the virus. I don't know what will be effective, but we will try everything that we can think of." (reply Williams) "How is the patient, Commander?" (Reply Williams) "Well we are working as fast as we can." Matthew then returned to his console, "Ensign, Chief, as we begin, I want you both to know, the virus originally affect plants, so if either of you have knowledge of botany, or are a amateur gardner, well try andything you can think of." He walked over to a replicator and told the computer for a cup of coffee. It materialized, and he took a seat at an out of the way table. He didn't want to rush people into accepting him. He watched the eating crew around him for a little before examining the schematics on the PADD he held in his hands, stoppign every little while for a sip of his coffee. (Reply, Any) (Posted by: John Smith) (USS Spectre – Medical Research – Security, CPO Jaret Rock – 18:02) "How would you like to do this? Should we split up and take two treatments each, or would you like to work with me? Do you think you have the training to do it yourself?" asked Samhan. “I think it would be best if we split the work up so we can work on this twice as fast. I am comfortable with my level of knowledge with these machines.” (reply Samhan) "Ensign, Chief, as we begin, I want you both to know, the virus originally affect plants, so if either of you have knowledge of botany, or are a amateur gardner, well try andything you can think of,” Santiago informed the two. “I am no botanist but the more information the better,” Jaret replied. (reply Samhan) With it being just Rock and the computer now he went to work. He looked at the PADD to download the first sequence into the system. Changing the needed information as the sequence was being initiated, and after a couple of minutes the simulation began. Jaret watched the screen as the simulation showed the virus and the new external stimuli beginning to be present. From Jaret’s observation the virus attacked the stimuli immediately and was able to grow at very fast rate. Within seconds the first sequence that Rock had to work with was no good. “Sequence 3A only progressed the virus. It seems that compound A and D only heightened the aggressiveness of the virus,” reported Jaret. (reply Williams, Samhan, Santiago , any) Jaret began to work on the second sequence that he was given. A couple minutes passed and an identical report was given by the simulation. “Sequence 4A increased the spread of the virus and compound G and M had no effect on any level.” (reply Williams, Samhan, Santiago , any) CPO Rock moved over to Ensign Samhan’s workstation and noticed that the simulation showing was from the first sequence the Ensign was given. He watched the simulation for a second. It seemed something was going right. “Ensign, is this one working?” (reply Samhan, Williams, Santiago , any) (posted by Calvin) (USS Spectre – Medical Research – FO, Williams – 18:02) "We are trying a variety of different methods to try and see what might have an effect on the virus. I don't know what will be effective, but we will try everything that we can think of." Andrew nodded. “Good. The sooner we can get a treatment for this the better.” "How is the patient, Commander?" “I have her stabilised for the moment but we need to get her to sickbay.” "Well we are working as fast as we can." “I will get out of your way then.” Andrew stepped back to Amari so that he could keep an eye on her. He also activated the monitor that he was beside and began looking at the samples that they were testing. “Sequence 3A only progressed the virus. It seems that compound A and D only heightened the aggressiveness of the virus,” reported Rock "Sequence 2A slows the virus, but fails to prevent infection. If we find nothing, it would succeed in giving us more time to search." “Sequence 4A increased the spread of the virus and compound G and M had no effect on any level.” “Is any of the others working?” Andrew saw that Rock moved over to Samhan. ~How he’s got something~ “Ensign, is this one working?” "It appears to be.” "It'll take a few minutes to see if the sequence is fast enough to be successful, but it looks like we have a cure. It won't be instantaneous, but after a day or two in Sick Bay , people should be back to good health." Andrew looked over at the Samhan. “Ensign can the cure be made aerosol or do we have to inject into every person?” (reply Samhan) (reply Samhan, Rock, Santiago , any) (posted by Robbie) (USS Spectre – Medical Research – Counselor Ensign JG George K. Samhan – 18:03) "Easier said than done Ensign, Easier said than done." The Lieutenant said, but George shrugged it off. He was on a bit of a high, given it was his first day on the job, and that this was his first real crisis. This lead him to keep an inaccurate assessment of his abilities. To tell the truth, medicine was always a struggle for him. Obviously he had some competence given his education, but it was only enough to pass the tests. Biology and medicine were subjects George loathed. But all of that was forgotten in this moment when others were counting on him. Which, for some reason, made him irritable. He turned to Chief Rock, said his bit, and the Chief replied, “I think it would be best if we split the work up so we can work on this twice as fast. I am comfortable with my level of knowledge with these machines.” George nodded, "as you wish, sir." He sat down at the machine, as he looked at the items listed on the PADD. He decided they all seemed plausible, but tried to think of a compound they may have missed. "Ensign, Chief, as we begin, I want you both to know, the virus originally affect plants, so if either of you have knowledge of botany, or are a amateur gardner, well try andything you can think of." The Lieutenant interrupted. ~Does he want us to work?~ He thought to himself. "Plants you say? I'm no botanist, but that sounds odd. Thanks for the information." Two centers of George's brain collided, the sarcastic and the sincere. As a result what he said came off horribly bland, and monotone as he uploaded Sequence 2A. He put in some information, but he hit a few blanks in his mind which made the process longer than it needed to be. But after two minutes he had the simulation running. The sequence latched on to the virus, impeding its ability to infect the cells, but it only succeeded in slowing down the infection. If someone normally would have a week to survive, it would probably give them two or two and a half. Not nearly good enough. “Sequence 3A only progressed the virus. It seems that compound A and D only heightened the aggressiveness of the virus,” reported Jaret. ~Good, I'm not the only one having issues~ "Sequence 2A slows the virus, but fails to prevent infection. If we find nothing, it would succeed in giving us more time to search." George reported. He cancelled the simulation and uploaded Sequence 1A. It operated much like the previous sequence, but faster. It would take a few more minutes to wait and see if it would succeed in preventing the viruses from multiplying, but before the simulation could run its course Jaret reported on his second sequence, which also failed. George chuckled to himself, but made sure not to have it too audible. The CPO moved over to George's workstation, and watched the simulation over his shoulders. ~I hate it when people watch me over my shoulders.~ “Ensign, is this one working?” "It appears to be," George replied, "It'll take a few minutes to see if the sequence is fast enough to be successful, but it looks like we have a cure. It won't be instantaneous, but after a day or two in Sick Bay, people should be back to good health." (Reply Rock, any) (Posted by Tim) (Borg Vessel - Primary Control - Primary Adjunct, Unimatrix One, One of Four - 18:12) Arriving at primary control, two of the drones moved into the unexpectedly empty room to take up positions at the consoles, One of four immediately made it's way towards the now opened tertiary core access... it had apparently been rifled, all of the equipment having now been removed by the Starfleet personnel after they had gained entry to it. It was of no consequence right now though for the Borg had a new primary goal and Deston was to be their key. At this moment in time, the Starfleet officer was against a bulkhead having been positioned there by one of the two drones that had entered, it's expression upon doing so had remained utterly cold and impassive, it's task merely the response of a now active vinculum as it redirected the remaining drones towards what had once been a secondary objective. One of four turned suddenly towards Deston and then advanced. "Designation - Deston, Carlyle. Accomplished and respected subspace analyst, successfully transposed meso-active subspace code across two dissimilar dimensions - assisted in subspace molecular folding experimentation and was successful in fluid containment of resultant matter to nth degree", said the drone. (Reply Deston, IYW) "You will assist the Borg in accessing and activating the final genetic sequence contained within the subspace field you know as 'the river'", said the Borg, it's expression unchanging and fixed as always, a perfect external rendition of it's cold, cybernetic heritage. (Reply Deston) (Posted by Alan) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix One six, Level Two - Borg Drone, Secondary Adjunct, Unimatrix Seven, Two of Six - 18:12) All drones were now aware of the threat regarding the Central Plexus and the vinculum was now relaying commands and redirects accordingly of course. As far as the Marines had been concerned, they had taken the damned thing offline, it's regenerative capacity however had brought it back online... A fitting testament to their abilities it would seem, If only Judith's statement regarding the Vinculum had been taken seriously when she had been taken by Donaldson to see the Councillor! Two of Six turned the corner to look down the corridor, then it paused, the four drones behind it paused also whilst the active sensors upon their headwear homed in on the conversations of the Starfleet personnel and the Marines up ahead, before they had even seen them. Up until this point, the Borg had not felt that they required weaponary attachements on this mission since their active shielding protected them enough, considering the rolling code modifications to the starfleet phase rifles however, each of the drones now sported the correct disruptor based unit weapons....now they could hit from a distance. Two of six remained on station in silence, soon the bearers of those voices would come to them, then they would return the Central Plexus and with it, their connectivity to the Collective. (Reply Any) (Posted by Alan) (Borg Vessel - Primary Control - Lt. (jg) Carlyle Deston - 18:13) The practical frog-march through the Borg vessel had been grimly entertaining for Deston, who had quickly learned that resistance was not merely futile, but painful; he soon discovered that it was better to maintain their implacable pace than drag his feet. Not that his captors /deliberately/ hurt him. It was all very impersonal; discomfort came from not following along. It was effective feedback training. It wasn't terribly long before they arrived in what was more nearly a room than the typical "wider corridor" spaces so prevalent in the Borg's utilitarian architecture. It was obvious that something had happened in the room; the signs that something, or some things, had been removed were obvious. Deston's "control Borg" - the drone that had him by the short hairs - walked Deston up to a smooth expanse of bulkhead, turned him about, and pinioned him there. The other Borg drones had moved to various consoles in the chamber, doing whatever mysterious interfacing tasks they were wont to do. Abruptly, one turned from his console and strode right over to Deston. "Designation - Deston, Carlyle. Accomplished and respected subspace analyst, successfully transposed meso-active subspace code across two dissimilar dimensions - assisted in subspace molecular folding experimentation and was successful in fluid containment of resultant matter to nth degree," said the drone. Belatedly, Deston hoped that the Borg couldn't read his expression. ~I... recognize most of those words... but they don't mean a damn thing strung together like that! What the hell is he on about?!~ The drone continued on. "You will assist the Borg in accessing and activating the final genetic sequence contained within the subspace field you know as 'the river'." Even a Horta would have been able to read the astonishment on Deston's face after that last statement. "Like HELL I wi- genetic sequence??!!" Deston struggled against his captor, in an unconscious attempt to get closer to the speaker. "Are you insa- insane? The subspace river isn't organic! It doesn't have a genetic structure - it's a subset of the hyper-continua with localized phase character... field..." The itty bit of Deston's brain that had led him to Proxima University, then to Starfleet Academy, and then to the Boudicca had noted something, and begun insistently piping away, and the rest of the fatty blob suddenly took notice. ~Actually, that might explain some of those anomalies that have been noted for the last few years...~ Deston sagged back against the bulkhead, his expression now a caricature of the "dreamy" look he normally wore when working inside his head. Some of the Borg's bizarre vocabulary usage was starting to take on syntactical relevance; Deston's lips moved as he muttered almost inaudibly, ideas flicking through his mind with lightning rapidity as old data began to take on new form. Then, suddenly, his head jerked up and he focused on the "leader drone", a look of deep suspicion on his face. "Why? What's in it for 'you'?" (Reply any) (Posted by John O'Neill) (Borg Vessel - Primary Control - Borg Drone, One of Four - 18:14) "Why? What's in it for - you?", said the Starfleet officer, his expression taking on a look of pure indignance now. The drone's expression remained quite neutral despite Deston's apparently carefully resolved rebuttal of course. "The singular designation 'you' has no meaning, there is only 'us'... we are Borg", said the drone, "we seek to empower the collective through assimilation of species and technology, resistance to the Borg is futile... you will begin extraction and disassembly of the final code inherent within species 2947", it added, the cold monotone of it's voice bereft of any reason or indeed, feeling. (Reply Deston) Clearly the term 'species 2947' meant little to the Science officer, the fact that it was the Borg designation for the subspace river itself though implied that they at least considered it a lifeform whether he did or not. The question that remained though was why... why was it essential to the Borg that this final piece of the puzzle be resolved, and for what purpose? If Deston's brain had information that the Borg required, then why had they not simply assimilated the Starfleet officer and been done with it? Something here wasn't adding up at all, it seemed that for now at least they needed him to remain Human. (Reply Deston, IYW) The drone simply turned away and then activated a console, which in turn opened a panel to reveal a transparent vessel holding a blue swirling mass of gas and fluid residue. Clearly, this was a sample from the river itself but it had been altered in some manner, and it was apparently coalescing now to form into solid matter before falling once more into it's gaseous vapour state. It seemed to be cycling. The Borg began operating the console again, it's activation causing a series of shifting and rotating bars to unphase and then pass through the solid vessel whilst a large amount of data began scrolling upwards upon a monitor overhead. "The final sequence is nondescript, it lacks form and logic... you will decipher the sequence", said the drone. "Or.... you will be assimilated into the collective now" One of the other drones then advanced upon the starfleet officer, it's hand extended menacingly towards him.... (Reply Deston) (Posted by Alan) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix One Six, Level Two - MXO, Major Bruce Kowalski - 18:14) Rounding the corner, the Major knew something was not quite right the very moment he did so. A shadow up ahead, black, menacing and standing immediately within the corridor as though it had deemed itself impervious to any kind of assault. The Major issued the command with a raise of his hand, then backed it up verbally for the fleeters as he raised his III-C to his shoulder and then fired. The drone took the shots square in the chest but did not move at all, it's shielding had adapted almost instantly, despite the rolling code modifications that had been made earlier. "Son of a.....", said the MXO as he dove for cover upon realizing that they needed more firepower and at the very least, a new tactic or two in the face of this somewhat bizarre situation. ~They've broken our codes again~ he thought as he glanced down at his rifle. "Sykes.... are we in transport range!", he hollered. (Reply Sykes) "Then we need to get there ASAP!", he cried as he began opening fire once again at the now advancing drones. There was now nowhere else for them to go but backwards and further away from transporter range.... and to make matters worse, Capps was now showing signs of sentience once more, but intermittently for the other side. "Sedate that man petty officer.... I don't want anyone making ripples from behind us", cried the Major as shots began to traverse the corridor, both green and red. "They are adapting instantaneously, I need options people!", cried the MXO.. O'Hara then offered something. "Charges sir, percussive charges are the only thing that will rock them if our shots are bouncing", shouted O'Hara as the team continued to retreat along their previous route, the Borg moving onwards seemingly without respite now. "Do it!", hollered Kowalski whilst Sykes struggled with Capps' now virtually dead weight. O'Hara made tracks rearwards for time, then he dug out his charges and began planting them strategically in the alcoves as the team joined him. Phasor and disruptor shots were now ricocheting around the corridor, some of them coming dangerously close to the individual members of the away team. Kowalski was thinking quickly, he then moved back to Capps in desperation, an idea forming in his mind. "Lieutenant Commander Capps... Can you here me", he hollered, grabbing the Lt Cmdr by the lapels of his flak jacket. (Reply Capps) "Your in there Lieutenant Commander, give us an edge.... it's now or never", he added as he prepared himself for the worst if the fleeter should be a lost cause now. (Reply Capps, Any) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre – Medical Research – Counselor Ensign JG George K. Samhan – 18:15) George then noticed that in addition to Chief Rock, there was another man behind him. Tall, with a tattoo from his right eyebrow to his right ear. His eyes were droopy, like he was suffering from insomnia. His uniform betrayed him as the First Officer of the Spectre. George didn't care for his tattoos, he felt they were unprofessional and low class. But he was glad to see there may be some work for him, especially with such a high ranking officer, if his intuition was correct. “Ensign can the cure be made aerosol or do we have to inject into every person?” George was stumped for a moment as he watched the screen blankly. "Um..." He picked up the PADD and looked at what made up the sequence. "It looks to me like we should be able to make this aerosol. I see no reason why this sequence wouldn't hold outside the bloodstream. If what the Lieutenant said was true, and this virus is airborne, we should be able to neutralize it using this sequence. Though I would recommend an injection for those already infected." (Reply Williams) "Though, to be honest, I'm not quite sure. Anyone else have an opinion?" "I think I can help give you lot a big leap forward by providing you with a copy of a grammar primer," Deston retorted hotly. "The pronoun 'you' is flexible in meaning, and can refer to collective as well as individual entities. What are YOU BORG expecting to attain by figuring out this supposed 'genetic code'? You figure you can merge with subspace?" Deston was biding for time with what few verbal sparring skills he could muster, given the circumstances. He needed time to think, and there were so many unknowns, in an environment so hostile... "No wonder you need outside help. You're insane, individually and collectively. You assume that, because the subspace river exhibits certain properties that could be loosely interpreted as 'living', it 'is' a living thing, and that you can somehow assimilate it? Crystalline growth mechanisms can mimic living growth patterns without ever crossing the the inert threshold. You - 'you', at any level of organization - are delusional." The drone simply turned away and then activated a console, which in turn opened a panel to reveal a transparent vessel holding a blue swirling mass of gas and fluid residue. Clearly, this was a sample from the river itself but it had been altered in some manner, and it was apparently coalescing now to form into solid matter before falling once more into it's gaseous vapour state. One of the other drones began to advance on Deston, hand extended menacingly. Deston, already quite highly keyed, jumped involuntarily against the arm of the Borg still restraining him against the bulkhead, and yelped. "OK, OK! I'll look at your damned bottle of space gas!" ~Time, time, time... need time so I can 'think'!~ (Reply any) (Posted by John O'Neill) (Borg Vessel - Primary Control - Borg Drone, One of Four - 18:17) The Borg moved it's hand towards the Starfleet officers neck, then it halted, seemingly awaiting it's next command before plunging the extended tubule through his skin, if indeed the order was given. That very act would have been the precursor to assimilation of course and Deston knew this full well, his response under the circumstances was duly predictable. "OK, OK! I'll look at your damned bottle of space gas!", cried the Science officer, his desire to remain alive and Human now clearly becoming of paramount importance to him. The drone immediately backed away slightly, the one immediately behind Deston relaxing it's grip upon him so as to allow him to comply with One of Four's request in regards the river sample. The Starfleet officer stepped forwards to look at the displayed data whilst the drones currently unoccupied with specific tasks, observed him diligently. He seemed hesitant, perhaps somewhat unsure of exactly what the Borg required of him right now, it was no surprise at all really for he wasn't to know that their own investigations into the sample had halted due to two specific reasons, the first being that the results had been precisely as the drone had stated beforehand, ie nondescript and not conforming to the logic they understood, and secondly that one component value, a key of some sort seemed to be missing. Deston it seemed, was that key. The Borg had correctly assumed via an as yet unwritten future, that the Science officer, an apparent expert in his field would go on to initiate a control mechanism that would scupper their planned incursion into sector Zero Zero One in an instance, and that by utilizing his abilities here and now in his own past, they might forgo that unwanted eventuality. It was simply a logical assumption, arrived at via the cold efficiency of the Borg collective. Needless to say, all they could do now was wait diligently for an answer. (Reply Williams) "Though, to be honest, I'm not quite sure. Anyone else have an opinion?" "Yeah, if we just fabricated the sequence, using these modifications," Matthew said as he entered in some data into the Ensign's console, "We should be able to replicate an airborne version that can be vented through the Spectre's ventilation systems, exposing the entire crew, and efficitvely neutralizing the virus." (reply Any) "We should probably leave the stuff running for a 24 hour period to effectively neutralize the virus from spreading, and I don't think inoculation will be necessary, the airborne sequence will be breathed into the body and immediately go to work. As long as the infected is still breathing of course. We can get started replicating the Ensign's discovery right away, if you give the order commander, as both FO and CMO, and the only medical doctor here, you are most qualified to make this decision.." Matthew was excited that he remembered enough from his science training as a youth to be able to modify the sequence into an aerosol form, but he was even more pleased that one of the team assembled found the right sequence, it meant that the epidemic would hopefully be stopped. "Just give the order sir," he said waiting to hear what the First Officer was going to say. He was glad he was able to help in the crisis and was surprised to see that the team seemed to have gotten an answer so quickly. Standing behind the rest of the team he listened in as Santiago , Samhan, and Williams talked about making the cure aerosol. Jaret knew exactly what aerosol meant, but the changes that were being made to the sequence had no meaning to him. It seemed everything was worked out, and all that was left was for the approval of the Chief Medical Officer. Can you here me", he hollered, grabbing the Lt Cmdr by the lapels of his flak jacket. The lifeless body of Calvin bounced up and down as the Marine pulled and tugged on his uniform. The phaser blast earlier had knocked Capps unconscious due to the fact that he was slowly being assimilated by the nano-probes present in his body. ~resistance is futile……no, no, NO, I will not be you……….you must comply, you will be assimilated, resistance is futile……..no, futile, focus, assimilated, starfleet, one of one, duty to crew……..~ Calvin struggled to think. Calvin’s inner thoughts fought against each other. There were two processes in his brain. The nano-probes had not completely taken over yet, but little time was left. Capps could feel his sub-conscious fading, as he felt excruciating pain over his body. He was dizzy and confused. A blurred vision of a being was shaken his body screaming something, but he felt comfortable or familiar with the voice. "Your in there Lieutenant Commander, give us an edge.... it's now or never", he added as he prepared himself for the worst if the fleeter should be a lost cause now. Lt Cmdr Capps heard the words but could not make out what was being said or what the man wanted. His eyes closed and the sweet harmony of voices returned. ~Assimilate all, retrieve Central Plexus unit 2311, resistance is futile, assimilate all, retrieve Central Plexus unit 2311, resistance is futile, assimilate all, retrieve Central Plexus unit 2311, resistance is futile……….~ Again his mission was clear. The man shaking him was obviously doing it in a violent manner. The man was a threat. He must be taken out….. ~No, no. He’s here to help. He’ll help you not be a Borg……not be a Borg~ Calvin’s brain scrambled with thought. Drool slid slowly out of Calvin’s mouth as he opened it to speak, “Cen, Centr…..” (reply Kowalski) Capps shook is head in the affirmative. “its activated, you……deactiv….” His body began to shake into a seizure. His body ran cold, and he could feel his eyes begin to roll backwards. With every will power he could find Calvin said the only word he knew he could say and get the point across, “destroy!” (reply Kowalski) Lt Cmdr Capps’ body fell like a board to the ground. Instantly the body eyes re-opened. His right hand reached out to the Marine standing over him and grabbed on to the throat and applied pressure to not allow an escape. “You will be assimilated.” (reply Kowalski, all, any) (posted by Calvin) (USS Spectre - Bridge - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 18:20) The Captain had been receiving preliminary reports from all decks as routine updates according to the ships alert status, what the away team were currently up to on the Borg ship however was still unknown, they had expected a period of radio silence of course but the waiting was not easy, the only redeeming factor in all of this was that they were reasonably sure that the natives were all accounted for. Doctor Williams' call from medical research though, broke the monotony of the wait, and with it good news finally arrived. =/\=Williams to Captain T’Vhor=/\= "Go ahead Commander", said the Captain. =/\=We have found a way to neutralise the virus Captain. If you are happy we will proceed right away=/\= "How long before you can have this ready?", asked the Captain. (Reply Williams) "You are sure that an aerosol is the most efficient means of delivery?", asked the Captain, "there must be absolutely no risk of the solution to this problem affecting those crew that are still in good health", he added. =/\=Yes Captain=/\= came the reply. The Captain pondered for a moment on this matter, then he gave the order to proceed. The CMO had never needed to be second guessed on such matters before and now was no time to begin doing so. "Very well, keep me updated on your progress", said the Captain, the comms then closed and he resumed his previous tasks, a little more optimistic now that there might be an end to the virus problem before much longer. (Reply Williams, Any) (Posted by Alan) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix One Six, Level Two – MXO, Major Bruce Kowalski - 18:20) Capps seemed to be drifting in and out of consciousness right now and was struggling to remain compos mentes, in fact if the truth were known, it was probably the MXO's firm agitation of his personage that was actually keeping him cognitive right now, if one could call it that. “Cen, Centr…..”, he stammered clearly attempting to pass something to them now that they might use. "What was that Lieutenant Commander.... centr?", cried Kowalski as disruptor shots continued to ricochet along the metal grated corridor. "Are you meaning the Central Plexus?", he urged, immediately turning to look down the corridor as Sykes and O'Hara did what they'd been tasked with, which was namely to set charges and hold the drones back as best they could. Capps shook is head in the affirmative. “its activated, you……deactiv….”, said Capps as he once again passed into unconsciousness. "Damn you man, make sense!", cried Kowalski, but Capps was giving them nothing now, his body fell to the floor and Kowalski knelt beside him as one of the drones rounded the corner up ahead of them to begin firing disruptor shots towards them. Two shots emanated from the business end of Kowalski's III-C, pushing the drone back slightly but not disabling it. Then, as if things couldn't get any worse, Capps's hand had reached up and had taken the MXO by the throat. It then began to squeeze to the accompaniment of a certain well known phrase. “You will be assimilated.”, said the ex-fleeter. O'Hara turned his attention to them, then he stepped towards them both just as the Major began struggling to breath, his airway now constricting due to the pressure being applied to it, without a word the Corporal quickly slapped a device onto the Majors back and then activated it.... then he opened an emergency channel to the Spectre over the Marine band. "O'Hara to Spectre... Emergency beam out at transponder location, two to go... security one alert", said O'Hara as another shot whizzed mere inches over their heads. (Reply Any on Spectre, Donaldson IYW) Kowalski wasn't quite sure what was happening now but within seconds, both he and Capps dissolved and were beamed away. It had not been common knowledge of course but O'Hara had brought along an emergency one man pattern enhancer in his kit just in case things got too much, and it was this that he had unselfishly attached to the XO's back It would not help him now of course and as a result of that the Marine XO and Capps were hopefully back in one of the Spectre's transporter rooms. As for the here and now Borg wise though, it was heating up further with the nearest drone now bearing down upon them firing shots. The Marine corporal looked down briefly at the central plexus, wondering what the Fleeter had meant when he had referred to it, if indeed it was that that he had been referring to. He had clearly said the word 'destroy' before he had intervened with the pattern enhancer. Could it mean that it was the Central Plexus that was the key to stopping all this? The question was neither here nor there, the next disruptor shot was streaking towards him and his immediate instinct was to shield himself from what was now coming at him. Needless to say, the hallowed device took the shot and began arcing as the disruptor beam hit it. "Damn!", cried O'Hara as he dropped it to the floor and then fell backwards into the metal bulkhead with a heavy thud. The drone suddenly ceased it's forwards motion, then it turned it's head first to the left, then to the right, and then up into the air. It had sensed the change, it's mission priority had suddenly been rerouted. O'Hara scrambled to his feet and then moved away as fast he was able, then together with Banowsky and Sykes, they made good their escape as they backtracked down towards the area they had recently been. The Borg drone moved to the discarded central plexus and then examined it, then it extended and inserted a probe into one of the ports along it's side and began interrogating the matrix. All it got though was static... the drone disengaged and dropped the unit with a loud clank before turning about to rejoin the others, they then headed back up the corridor leaving the remaining away team members to regroup and lick their wounds! What now though, just how many drones had beamed aboard? For all they knew the ship could be teaming with them and both Capps and Kowalski could have beamed back to a less than amiable welcoming party aboard the Spectre. With any luck though that would not be the case and with even more luck still, Kowalski and the fleeter had by now been separated and reinforcements would soon be on their way. With any luck! By now though, Capps had stood to his feet, seemingly having found a new lease of life and bountiful amounts of energy which he was now using to choke the living daylights out of the far from slightly built Marine! Struggling to turn his face towards transporter chief Powell as he powered down the transporter, his expression spoke volumes and the man was responding in an instance as he stepped around the console, phasor drawn and ready. "Sir, release the major now!", cried the Lieutenant, "release the Major or I will be forced to disable you", he added as he pointed his weapon directly at the Lieutenant Commanders back, unsure right now of their current situation or even why they were now fighting. The alert though had stated Security One and already, security officers were on their way. Despite this though, Powell had to act now. (Reply Capps, IYW) Kowalski rabbit punched Capps twice hard in the stomach but his grip was as firm as steel and intent on crushing his larynx enough to be able to prevent him from talking, and also restricting the blood flow to his brain. Needless to say, Capps did not let go. "Sir, you have been warned!", cried the Transporter chief mere moments before he pulled the trigger hitting Capps directly between the shoulder blades and dropping him in an instance as a shipwide alert sounded in response to the unauthorized phasor discharge. Kowalski fell to the floor, his hands moving up to rub at his throat as the blood began to flow to his brain once more. As for Capps, he was unconscious yet again, however many nanoprobes now circulating within his body temporarilly disabled by the phasor shunt that had overloaded them. Powell tapped his combadge to open a channel. "Medical emergency in transporter room One, I have an officer down and one seriously injured", he said abruptly. =/\=On our way Lieutenant=/\= came the reply. It seemed almost instantly he was bothered by another human. This one however was armed. "Sir, release the major now!", cried the Lieutenant, "release the Major or I will be forced to disable you.” The nano-probes were programmed to believe by this point of assimilation the body they control now would have been given all armor necessary to serve the Borg. Calvin mistakenly believed that the phaser could not harm him with the Borg armor protecting him. He did not worry about the man with the weapon, but continued to take the life out of the Marine. "Sir, you have been warned!”, he cried as he shot the phaser. This left Will in a situation he didn't want to be in. It was his away team, but now he was alone with the two other marines, and it was up to him to get both of them out. "Alright, O'Hara pick up the Central Plexus, O'Hara, you cover our rear, it looks like the Borg are disengaging from now, we aren't too far from the beam out point, if we can get there soon, we can ge the hell out of here." Sykes nodded and picked up the Central Plexus as O'Hara got into position. (reply O'Hara iyw) "It looks like its a clear path to the extraction point, so lets get the hell out of here." The away team slowly made their way down the hall, keeping a vigilant eye on the Borg Drones, it seemed with the Central Plexus damaged they didn't seem to be as interested in recovering it. Luckily, especially considering that Will didn't have the full use of his arms, they were able to make it to the beam out point with out anysort of trouble. But the problem now became, would they be able to get off the ship. "Banowsky to Spectre Bridge, Captain, we have the Plexus" (reply T'Vhor) "It is damaged, but something is better than nothing. Security had been duly ordered to the Transporter room to deal with 'whatever', and the Captain had finally received some good news from Dr Kirien via one of her assistants regarding the virus outbreak. Apparently they knew what had caused the problem, and more importantly, where the current hot points were. If they acted fast enough then they might prevent those hot points becoming much larger. "Good work, inform Dr Kirien that she is to make it a priority now to isolate this.... and keep me informed", said the Captain just as an incoming communication from the Borg vessel arrived. =/\=Banowsky to Spectre Bridge, Captain, we have the Plexus=/\= "Excellent", said the Captain, "I trust it is intact" =/\=It is damaged, but something is better than nothing. The Captain raised an eyebrow, then the penny dropped so to speak, all those times trying to decipher Kreungs metaphors and idioms having paid off it would seem. "Understood Lieutenant Commander, logically we can assume that our sphere has turned up and is currently cloaked", said the Captain pausing then to ratify the situation in his head, then he repeated his order for Banowsky to stand by pending beamout before closing the channel and contacting transporter room One. "Bridge to Lieutenant Powell" =/\=Powell here sir, the situation in regards Major Kowalski and Lieutenant Commander Capps is now under control sir=/\= "Very good Lieutenant, you now have three more to beam over... plus one piece of equipment", said the Captain. A pause followed, indicating that Powell had activated his console to locate the starfleet signals. =/\=I have them sir, their signals are not as strong as I would like but.....I'm ready to bring them home=/\= "Then please do so.... inform Lieutenant Commander Banowsky to file his report as soon as he has attended to himself and the plexus..... in that order", said the Captain. =/\=Will do sir, energizing now=/\= Came the reply. The Captain then turned his attention to the officer manning tactical One, an un-Vulcanlike urgency in his voice now. "If that ship is out there, I want it found now", said the Captain, "inform the Marines to prepare to reboard the Borg vessel in force...... also, see if you can get a reliable indication on exactly how many drones we are now dealing with", he added. "Aye sir", said the Tactical Officer as he quickly went to work. (Reply Any) (Posted by Alan) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix One Six, Level Two – Lt. Commander Banowsky - 18:29) As the communication between Will and the Captain ended, Will motioned for the two marines to stay close to him as the waited to be transported back to the Spectre, and whisked away to safety. Will was eager to return to the Spectre, a nice shower, a trip to sickbay, and a debriefing with the Captain. But he didn't know in which order he would take. He probably could suck up the pain a little more, but it was safe to say that it hurt, and he would like to have his bones mended, but it was more important for him to deliver the prize at the end of the rainbow to the Captain first. He had Sykes give him another shot of pain killer, just enough to dull the pain and give him enough cognizance to operate in a debriefing, then he would go to sickbay. He would probably get chewed out for not going to sickbay first, but he didn't care. They risked a lot to bring the damn Central Plexus home, and it was his first priority. "Time to go home boys!" He said with joy, as they began to be enveloped with the transporter beam. Will smiled as he was happy to be off the damn Borg ship. His caper was for all intents and purposes, though the goods were damaged, a success. Banowsky's 5, as he was probably going to call them in his log playing of the name of a 20th century film and its 21st century remakes, would all now be back on the Spectre. His first away mission over. Andorians were invariably stubborn and H'Chir was no exception to the rule and even though for the moment he was prepared to accept defeat, he would soon be back with a vengeance, what he needed right now though was a distraction. How thoughtful of Banowsky to supply one.... =/\=Banowsky to Lt. H'Chir, I'm sending a special package your way, a Borg Central Plexus, kind of damaged. "Send it on Lieutenant Commander, I can't promise I'll be talking to it anytime soon but I'll tell you how it works at the very least", said H'Chir as he turned to one of his engineers to signal that he at least should continue attempting to get a clean result on the power handover error. =/\=Just do whatever you can, Banowsky out.=/\= H'Chir pursed his lips and quirked his head as a thought concerning the CONN officer lingered in his mind. ~Banowsky Banowsky.... just when did we stop fighting?~ At one time of course, both officers had held a certain distaste for one another, it wasn't that H'Chir considered him odious or a pain, or anything like that. He was just, well... a, how did one say it.... H'Chir let the thought go, it was neither here nor there. He had work to do again and it was something other than that damned cloak! They were greeted by the remants of a security team, that unbenownst the returning away team had been dispatched to deal with the arrival of Commander Capps and Major Kowalski. As the Security team approached, Will ordered one of the Security Officers to take the Plexus from Sykes. He then dismissed the two marines to do whatever they needed to do to either mend themselves, take a shower, whatever. As they left, Will began to head to the door and pointing at the two security officers present, "I want you two to take this to Engineering, I don't want it to leave your sight, and I don't want you to even think about leaving it until I am able to relieve you of it." The two Security officers exited as well, painfully tapped his Commabadge. "Banowsky to Lt. H'Chir, I'm sending a special package your way, a Borg Central Plexus, kind of damaged. (reply H'Chir) "Just do whatever you can, Banowsky out" Will then began walking to the door his next stop the Bridge, but as he was exiting he was stopped by the transporter chief. "Sir," Lt. Powell said, "The Captain wants you to see that your are healed and in ok shape before you file your report sir. His orders." "I see," Will said with a sigh, "Well then, thanks for the heads up, looks like next stop sickbay." Will then left, kind of happy, the pain was just becoming a hassle. (reply H'Chir) (posted by Will Banowsky) (USS Spectre - Marine Barracks - Cprl, Lewis O'Hara - 18:35) O'Hara waltzed into the barrack room and slung his kit onto his bed, then he glanced towards the apparently sleeping Rameriz who had remained behind on this particular mission of mindless madness. It was probably just as well anyway, as if the smell of Borg heat and flesh wasn't enough to drive anyone nuts, Rameriz's constant breaking of wind would have simply driven them all to despair long before the first drone had even appeared. O'Hara walked over to the man and then shoved him with his boot. "Hey Rameriz... wake up ya lazy grunt, we just got back from a hell hole here, the least ya can do is get the damned replicator online", said O'Hara. Rameriz did not budge, he simply remained where he was, unmoving. "Rameriz!", hollered O'Hara, "I said RAMERIZ!", he repeated whilst leaning towards the prone man's head now. Still nothing. "Jesus man", said O'Hara rolling his head back to look at the ceiling, "will you get your damned butt up and in gear.... move it Marine" Rameriz however remained quite still as O'Hara's expression of camaraderie driven playfulness suddenly began to take on a more stable, relaxed expression. Something wasn't quite right with this picture and the realization of that was finally beginning to hit home. O'Hara approached the bunk once again, then he placed a hand upon the Spaniards shoulder, pushing it as he did so and noting how his entire body moved in relation to the shove... Rameriz was cold, so cold. O'Hara sat down slowly onto the bunk next to him, then he tentatively touched the ashen skin of his face, his own brow furrowing slightly now as he felt that familiar feeling welling up inside of him, the one they had all faced at the fall of a comrade. O'Hara closed his eyes and then bit at his lower lip. "Don't do this to me buddy", he said quietly, knowing full well of course that Rameriz could no longer hear him now anyway, he had seen this all to often and he knew of course that the man was dead. Gripping the Spaniards shoulders he squeezed them firmly, then he lowered his head in respect. Sykes then wandered into the barracks also, his kit casually discarded onto his own bunk as he turned his attention to O'Hara where he sat. (Reply Sykes) O'Hara looked slowly towards Sykes, his expression immediately telegraphing the fact that something was wrong. (Reply Sykes IYW) "Rameriz is gone man.... "Lewis, drinks later, you in?" O'Hara looked slowly towards Sykes, his expression immediately telegraphing the fact that something was wrong. "Dude, Lewis, you alright? "Rameriz is gone man.... I - I dunno... why or how", said O'Hara soulfully, "but he's gone" "The hell?!" Sykes quickly grabbed his field kit and rushed to Ramirez side. Taking out a medical tricorder he placed a scanner at the top of Ramirez forehead and began to take readings. The readings pretty much showed there was nothing they could do. Ramirez was dead, any attempts to revive him were futile. "Damn, I don't think there is anything we can do. But well, there is one thing." Robert tapped his commbadge, he liked to keep things in the 'family' so to speak, among the marines. But this, this could have been a number of things, that he needed more time to find the cause of death, but there were a number of things that brought the investigation into the death under the jurisdiction of the ship security, which made it a fleeter issue. "Marine Lt. Sykes to Lt. Donaldson," (reply Donaldson) "Lieutenant, you and a security team might want to come down here, myself and another marien have found a marine dead in the barracks, cause of death currently unknown." He would be more than happy to get the bones in his left collar bone, left fore arm, and right wrist healed. But as he entered sickbay he noticed it a little more crowded then he thought. Of course unknown to Will a virus had begun to spread while he was on the Borg ship. And there was also the matter of Deborgifying Lt. Commander Capps. He slowly approached the doctor who seemed to be in charge. "Excuse me not trying to be a hassle, but umm, I know you are busy but when you have time, I have a broken left collar bone, left fore arm, and right wrist, that I would like to get mended." "Damn, I don't think there is anything we can do. But well, there is one thing", said Sykes tapping his combadge and calling for the Security Chief. "Marine Lt. Sykes to Lt. "I think I really do need that drink", he said. O'Hara shook his head and then clasped his hands together in front of him. "Not me man, I'm for waiting here until this is properly investigated, as the guy who found him their gonna wanna speak to me", said O'Hara. (Reply Sykes) Lewis bit at his lower lip in thought. (reply O’Hara, Sykes, any) (posted by Calvin) (USS Spectre – Marine Barracks – Cprl, Lewis O'Hara – 18:46) O'Hara had been standing guard at the door to the Marine barracks, his mind still searching for an answer as to what had happened to Rameriz. Sykes was seated upon his bunk, apparently lost in thought also. It wasn't supposed to be like this at all, Marines were supposed to fall in action, waist high in blood n guts and firing at the enemy. Rameriz had seemingly checked out on his bunk, no blood, no guts, no fury, and definitely no honour! Lewis turned briefly to look towards Rameriz' bunk, his body now covered with a sheet and looking particularly peaceful. It was strange, the thought almost made the Corporal smile, Rameriz, finally peaceful! It was then though that the Security Officer Rock appeared at the door requesting entry. "We have an unexplained death here, I think we need a full team on hand", said O'Hara. “I know. Lt Cmdr Donaldson would like for me to send his deepest regrets for not being able to make this investigation. He currently has other duties that have prevented him to make it. In his absence he has sent me. I am Chief Petty Officer Jaret Rock.” O'Hara huffed disapprovingly. "Don't want just anybody down here looking into this", he said sharply, "just get your boss down and we'll make a start, Rameriz was our brother" “I understand your concern, but I assure you that I am a complete professional and expert. I have been in Starfleet and in Security for 20 years. I will do a complete and accurate investigation.”, said Rock, trying his best now to be tactful and respecting of the loss the Marines now felt. The Corporal pursed his lips tightly, it seemed that Rock wasn't going to take no for an answer on this one so he reluctantly stepped aside. "So where do you want to start?", he asked. “If you could please show me the body?”, said Rock, just as more security members arrived carrying equipment cases. "Sure, he's on the bunk.... he's the one with the sheet over him", said O'Hara, somehow finding it within himself now to inject a little humour into an otherwise morose and sad situation. The security officer then approached the bunk in readiness for the teams rather unsavoury task ahead... Kowalski's orders had been to neutralize the drone incursion at whatever cause and Stevens was no slouch in dealing death and destruction. A battle hardened Marine of numerous campaigns and retrieval missions, he was leading his team onwards and upwards, their destination the logical objective of the returned drones - the Borg bridge itself. What they would find there nobody was quite cure, then again as Marines they were more than used to the unexpected appearing around every corner, and the unconventional. Lt Major Stevens paused briefly at a steep slope leading upwards towards a pulsing blue light, reading off information on his TACOM the display showed no moving targets immediately ahead, so together they began the slow assent of the sharp gradient, weapons at the ready just in case something unexpected, or indeed unconventional should occur. It isn't a toaster" "Sir?", inquired the Vulcan Engineer, "a toaster toasts bread... this, is most certainly not a device for toasting bread", added the somewhat confused Ensign. H'Chir sighed heavily and then patted the man on the shoulder. "It could be, I mean place two pieces of bread upon the primary shunt, fire it up and..... you have your toast", said the Andorian gazing hopefully now into the Vulcans face to see if he would 'get' the implied idiosyncratic connotation the chief was trying to get across. The Vulcan though, simply quirked his head and furrowed his brow, his confusion now building exponentially. "But this is a Borg Central Plexus sir, it's design is consistent with data re-route and beamed communication towards distant receivers", said the Vulcan Engineer turning his attention now towards the central plexus where it lay, fixed firmly into the test rig and bearing no similarity whatsoever to any kind of food preperation device. "Your argument is invalid", said the Ensign, "introducing bread into the equation is..... illogical" H'Chir shook his head and huffed aloud, his antennae twitching now with a mixture of frustration and pure confusion himself. Why was it that Vulcans had no sense of humour? Was it considered to be conducive to lack of intellect or something.... or were they all just boring? "Fire it up again", said H'Chir changing the subject back to the matter in hand, "this time we'll analyze both the discharge and throughput circuits whilst it is actually relaying data" The Vulcan remained straight faced of course. "The subject of toast is now closed then sir?", he asked. H'Chir clenched his fist momentarilly, then he gritted his teeth at the mans response. "Yes Ensign, no toast.... only data", said the Andorian turning about now to suddenly spy an Engineer he had not yet seen before, standing in the doorway of Engineering. For a moment or two he studied the man, he looked lost and yet.... at ease. H'Chir pointed briefly to the plexus so as to intonate that his fun loving Vulcan colleague should continue with the tests on the device, then he marched over to the newcomer. "Can I help you?", he said upon his arrival. (Reply Aldlar) "Another transfer!", exclaimed the chief, "the Humboldt must be dry of personnel by now", he added, positively thankful now that the Ensign was NOT a Vulcan. "How are you with Borg tech?", asked H'Chir. (Reply Aldlar) "...and phased cloaks?", he added. (Reply Aldlar) The Andorian's face broke into a slight smile, then he took the mans arm and gave him a gentle tug in the direction of where he had just been. "Come with me", he said, "I have a nice little job for you.... you don't mind Vulcan's do you?... infuriatingly lacking in the sense of humour department it would seem", he added. (Reply Aldlar) The duo then arrived at the test rig, complete with Borg central plexus and 'un-smiling' Vulcan Engineer. "I want you to assist Ensign Slok here with some tests", said H'Chir, "I myself need to get down to the cloak again", he added as he moved off, only to return briefly to whisper something to Aldlar. (Reply, any) (Posted by: John Smith) (USS Spectre - Main Engineering - Ensign Aldlar Durgil - 19:03) 'Can I help you?' Aldlar turned and spotted an andorian, obviously the chief of engineering. "Ensign Aldlar Durgil. I was just transfered from the Humboldt" Aldlar listened to the engineer talking about being sucked dry of personnel. He chuckled. "Borg tech? Not much about it, just that it's usually bad news." '...and phased cloaks?' "Oh, they are much more fun." Aldlar felt himself being guided across engineering to where he could see a vulcan working on something obviously of borg manufacturing. 'Whatever you do, don't mention toast.' ~Toast? OOOOOo-kay.....~ Aldlar turned to the vulacn "I'm Ensign Aldlar Durgil. New transfer. What are we doing here?" (Reply, Slok) Aldlar's slight bewilderment at the mention of a toaster shows on his face, but it could be assumed as disorientation from the rush into this ordeal. "So, is this a vinculum? I'm not to familier with borg tech." (Reply, Slok) Aldlar began a quick inspection of the object. All he could glean from it was, "NOT FEDERATION". "Sooo... What are we doing again?" (Reply, Slok, any) (Posted by John) (USS Spectre - Main Engineering, Cybernetic Testbed One - ACEO, Ensign Slok - 19:04) Slok had been doing exactly what came naturally to Vulcan's, he was working both efficiently and precisely. The test of course had begun again with the re-calibrated variables now in place as requested by H'Chir, the central plexus had already powered up and it's transmission matrix had initialized and was sending spurious data to an external buffer for safety sake. After all, nobody wanted the thing to start sending Borg specific code into space now did they... H'Chir, let alone the CO, would not be at all happy with that particular outcome! The Vulcan Engineer tweaked a setting first one way, then the other, noting as he did so the effect upon the primary Tr matrix. It remained stable thus indicating that the device itself was compensating for external adjustment. Ensign Slok pondered this for a short while, then made to adjust the field dampener as H'Chir appeared, introduced a new Engineer and then whispered something about toasters again before promptly heading off to the phased cloak.... again. "I'm Ensign Aldlar Durgil. New transfer. What are we doing here?", said the newcomer. Slok stood up straight and turned to face the Engineer, his hands clasping behind his back as he did so. "Ensign Slok", he replied, "and as to what 'I' am doing, I am attempting to ratify the process whereby this device processes, initiates, and then transmits readable data to the Borg collective", said Slok, correcting the new Ensign's error in regards his use of the 'We' suffix in preference to the more exact 'I'. "I should also point out that despite mention to the contrary, this is not a toaster", he added. A look of puzzlement quickly followed on the Engineers face before apparently dismissing the mention of toasters in preference to Borg specifics. "So, is this a vinculum? I'm not to familiar with Borg tech.", said Aldlar. "It is a Borg Central Plexus, the device is responsible for establishing communication with the collective", said Slok with a typical rise of an eyebrow, "a Vinculum maintains a link between individual drones, thus allowing them to.... experience one anothers actions and thoughts", he added. Ensign Durgil leaned forwards, then he began examining the device more closely. "Sooo... What are we doing again?", he asked. The Vulcan pursed his lips, then he gestured with his hand to the display upon the console. "Is it not self evident?", he replied, wondering now if the Humboldts Engineers had ever even seen a cybernetic test rig in action. He dismisses the issue and continues to listen. 'It is a Borg Central Plexus, the device is responsible for establishing communication with the collective. A Vinculum maintains a link between individual drones, thus allowing them to.... experience one anothers actions and thoughts.' "Oh, right. Sorry I messed that up." Aldlar is feeling a little nervous, seeing how he messed up a BCP for a BV. He begins to look at the object. It's a large, green glowing chunk of borg tech. (Reply, Slok, any) (Posted by: John) (USS Spectre - Main Engineering, Cybernetic Testbed One - ACEO, Ensign Slok - 19:07) Ensign Durgil looked slightly perturbed at the Vulcans response, it was obvious to Slok now that the man had little hands on experience with Borg technology, which was fine given that not many Starfleet engineers actually did. "Oh, right. Sorry I messed that up." said the new Engineer. "No need for apologies Ensign Durgil", said Slok, "other than knowing what it is and what it is meant to do, I am as much in the dark as yourself on the internal workings", he added. "So, your pretty much saying this is some sort of a comm system. But, we can't make heads or tales of it. Right?", asked Ensign Durgil moving in closer now to examine the device for himself. That and perfection, though the latter comes through the former." Aldlar looked at the object again. It's steady green glow a little soothing, but the idea that it could process so much data balanced out the effect with a kind of awe. Durgil became away that the Vulcan had turned to face him. 'Do you have any suggestions for further tests?' Aldlar stood from his crouched position and turned to face the Vulcan. "Not really. If we have tested what it can do, I guess that's it. I doubt that we'd be able to reverse engineer it and get anything done. Have we already found the specific part of it that sends the data?" (Reply, Slok) Aldlar sighed. He turned back to the CP, looking at it. ~Great, first thing I do here is get stuck with a chunk of Borg garbage I know nothing about.~ "I don't know about you, but I'm gonna pass the baton. The Vulcan quirked his head slightly to one side, then he glanced briefly towards the console display before returning his attention to the newcomer. "It would appear to be a hybrid transmission circuit based on Romulan and Starfleet technology", said Slok, "it is vastly enhanced and upgraded of course, a few of the subcircuits bearing no similarity to any technology I know of" Aldlar sighed and then took another look at the device on the testbed. "I don't know about you, but I'm gonna pass the baton. I can't help much with Borg stuff.", he said dismissively. "That is not an option that is currently open to us", said the Vulcan, "Lieutenant H'Chir has tasked us with the job of finding out precisely it's internal fuctionality, up to a point where we can go no further" (Reply Durgil) "Then I suggest we begin with what we do know and then work backwards from that point", said Slok turning his attention back to the Central plexus. "We know that the tranceiver is multifunctional and adaptive, the carrier frequencies are apparently able to mimic our own subspace codes, although to what purpose I am unsure." (Reply Durgil) "There appears to be a central dedicated core for data storage and encryption", said Slok, "it would be illogical to begin disassembly of this part of the device without proper precautionary measures being in place.... and within a dedicated laboratory that is equipped for such a procedure", he added. (Reply Durgil) The Vulcan nodded. "A starbase facility indeed", he said with a raise of an eyebrow, knowing full well of course that the Durgil was probably correct about finally passing that proverbial baton. They tried their hardest to ignite the brains electricity in order to wake Calvin up, but with their efforts so far have been futile. Calvin’s mind fought the nano probes. Ah' understand the Spectre doesn't currently have an acting CSO, may ah' ask who ah' will be reportin' to? (Reply T'Vhor) The Captain nodded and then turned his attention to the Ensigns orders, displayed as they now were upon the PADD he had brought with him. These were standard transfer orders of course, and despite the reasoning behind those orders, the Spectre needed all the Science officers it could get right now. Gunnell would surely be pleased of the help anyway. "I understand that you received your doctorate from the Vulcan Science Academy, this is most unusual for a Human", said the Captain remarking on the mans Starfleet file. Ryan again shrugged, "Mah' third doctorate, yes sir. Ah' understand what an honor it was that ah' was allowed in. Valik, who ah' collabortated with on The Effects of Theta Radiation in Cross Species Genetic Fusion while ah' was at Daystrom, sponsored me and was mah' advocate in front of the science directorate." Switching to Vulcan, "I found the experience quite rewarding." (Reply T'Vhor) (Posted by Travis) (USS Spectre - Captain's Ready Room - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 20:05) It had been a surprise that Talasario had not fully briefed the transferring officer of their situation here... was it something the Captain had done or said perhaps? Civil war aside, now was hardly the time to be stalling, irrespective of how many officers the man was being ordered to transfer over. "Not much sir. Ah' heard somethin' about the Borg, but not much else. Ah' understand the Spectre doesn't currently have an acting CSO, may ah' ask who ah' will be reportin' to?", said Anderson. "Doctor Gunnell will be your point of contact for now", said the Captain, "she is currently our mission specialist and Borg Semantics expert.... I will be needing you to liase with her the moment you are able" (Reply Anderson) The Captain then queried the officer on his schooling, and in particular his time spent at the Vulcan Science Institute. A typical Vulcan, he had achieved kolinhar at an exceptionally early age.... what had this young Ensign done to deserve such attention he wondered. "It is indeed an honour to have served with a Vulcan of such high regard", said the Captain, "tell me, how close were you to achieving kolinhar?", he asked knowing full well now that for a Human, the task was more or less insurmountable. A smile spread across Andersons' face, "It's amazing that when ah' first meet a Vulcan who knows about mah' attending the Sience Academy, they always ask that. But never if they already know me. Ah' never had much desire to find inner harmony and all that. Although a few times while ah' was there they thought ah' was meditatin' when really ah' was just thinkin'." (Reply T'Vhor) (Posted by Travis) (USS Spectre - Captain's Ready Room - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 20:08) The Captain quirked his head slightly at the Ensign's curious accent. An Earth dialect if he was not mistaken and yet, one he had never before encountered. The man HAD managed to become accepted into the Vulcan Science academy though and for that, he should, and was being commended. ".....Ah' never had much desire to find inner harmony and all that. Although a few times while ah' was there they thought ah' was meditatin' when really ah' was just thinkin", said Ensign Anderson. "Perhaps.. they are just the same", said the Captain musing on the intricacies of thought and it's outcomes. (Reply Anderson, IYW) "I have often felt that to find the 'inner harmony' you mention, one must initiate logical thought towards a desired outcome", said the Captain, "it is no surprise that 'they' assumed you were engaged in meditation", he added with a raise of an eyebrow. (Reply Anderson) The Captain turned his attention thence to the mans Starfleet file once again, noting in particular a Councilling report in regards the loss of his wife and child. This was a matter close to the Captain himself of course, the loss of his own wife and child during childbirth being of considerable importance to him throughout his Starfleet career. "I see that you have suffered great loss", said the Captain, his usual 'straight to the point' Vulcan methodology coming to the fore again. (Reply Anderson) The Captain nodded and then clasped his hands together before him upon his desk. "Perhaps you should reconsider..... 'thinkin' as you term it. With the correct guidence, you might address this issue and achieve a degree of the inner harmony that you turned away whilst on Vulcan", said the Captain. (Reply Anderson) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Personal Quarters - Lt Cmdr Will Banowsky - 21:02) Lt. Commander Will Banowsky's Personal Log Stardate 2408.06.08 As of 21.00 hours, I find myself sufficiently mended enough to begin preparations to present my report to Captain T'Vhor as to what happened on the Borg Ship. At roughly 17.00 hours an away team consisting of myself, Lt. Commander Calvin Capps, and Marine officers, Corporal Lewis O'Hara, Second Lieutneant Robert Sykes, and Major Bruce Kowalski, beamed over to the Borg Vessel that had located itself near the Entrance to the Subspace river. The mission was simple, well not exactly, Retrieve the Central Plexus. I wish I could say that the mission was a complete success, but sadly, I am not sure. We did retrieve the Central Plexus but it was damaged during a fire fighter with Borg Drones who appeared from an apparently cloaked vessel. The damaged Central Plexus is aboard the Spectre and is presently under guard in main engineering. As for the away team itself, Sykes and O'Hara returned relatively unscathed, Major Kowalski with some bruising after a scuffle with Lt. Commander Capps. Myself I recieved a broken Left collar bone, left forearm and right wrist in a fight with Lt. Commander Capps. Calvin had the worst luck of all, as the reason we had tussles with him is that he became infected with Borg nano probes and had begun the assimilation process. He was among the first of us to beam back to the Spectre, and I am told that he is expected to make a full rec....physical recovery.. I can only imagine the psychological mending that he will have to undergo within the coming weeks. The Captain has currently dispatched a crew of marines to the Borg Ship and they are hopefully cleaning up what is left over there, as well as any mess my away team might have made over there. I have also heard through the grapevine, that my old ship, the USS Humboldt will be leaving us sometime tomorrow morning. As for the ship itself, apparently at the same time the away team left it was plagued by a virus that found its way spreading through the ship infecting crew members with flu like symptons, that luckily appear to be under control, or in the process of getting there. As for the crew itself, today has been a day that has seen a large increase in new crew members, as well as returning ones, and it seems that this new breed of spectre crew that has come aboard today will hopefully serve this ship well, because this ship, she deserves the best. He had finished his report, he was feeling better, his bones were still sore, but not as much as before, he had eaten food, so he was felt that he had officially attended to himself first. "I have my report for you sir." Will said as he handed the Captain the PADD with information. (Reply T'Vhor) "Well, still a little sore, but I'm fine, I'm still alive." (reply T'Vhor iyw) Will then took a seat, he didn't know how long the debriefing would take, but he did know that he was still a little fatigued from his previous adventure. "Everything should be included in my report. You would have to brief engineering if you wanted to know the functionality of the Central Plexus. At this point it is in H'Chir's capable hands." (reply T'Vhor) "As for anything not included in the report sir. Well, I will tell you everything you would like to know." (reply T'Vhor) (reply T'Vhor) (posted by Will Banowsky) (USS Spectre - Captain's Ready Room - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 21:21) Lieutenant Commander Banowsky looked mildly refreshed after his first taste of an away team command, his wounds had been healed, his bruises treated but the real casualty it would seem had been the mans nerves. He had dealt with a lot in the last few hours and by all accounts had brought the team home without losing anyone. He had done well despite his obvious exhaustion. "I have my report for you sir", he said as he approached the Captain's desk PADD in hand. The Captain took the offered PADD and immediately began to peruse it. "I trust that you are feeling a little better than when you had first arrived back on board Will", said the Captain, casting a brief upwards glance into his face as he spoke. "Well, still a little sore, but I'm fine, I'm still alive", answered Banowsky. "Indeed", said the Captain, "I would not have it any other way.... please, take a seat" "Everything should be included in my report. You would have to brief engineering if you wanted to know the functionality of the Central Plexus. At this point it is in H'Chir's capable hands", said the Lieutenant Commander. "As for anything not included in the report sir. Well, I will tell you everything you would like to know." The Captain nodded and then continued to read through the PADD entries pertaining to the mission, noting as he did so the individual steps that had led up to the unfortunate part assimilation of Lieutenant Commander Capps. Reports from sickbay had showed the man to be cognitive but sedated pending deactivation of the nano-probes within his body, everyone knew of course that reversal of any degree of assimilation by the Borg was risky, but the Spectre's medics were well versed in the intricacies of such matters and the CO had confidence that his old friend would be returned to duty as soon as Humanly possible. Indeed, the ever efficient Capps would have had it no other way. "I have had a preliminary report from Lieutenant H'Chir already", said T'Vhor, "it would seem that the damage sustained during the central plexus retrieval is reversible. He also feels that we may yet have the best example of a working central plexus to date", said the Captain as he placed the PADD onto the table and then brought his hands together before him. "You look exhausted Will, we can discuss this more fully during tomorrows briefing, Doctor Gunnell has made some interesting discoveries that will require consolidation of all of the available data so..... please, get some rest", said the Captain. (Reply Banowsky) The Captain nodded and then dismissed the officer accordingly after congratulating him on a successful first away team command. He needed something more filling, and he wanted to be around people. Being on the Borg ship really made him appreciate individuality, and the freedom that came with it. He walked up to the chef's bar, and with a slight smile, he requested an order, something cooked, not replicated. "Philly Cheese Steak, extra onions and peppers, side of fries." The chef on duty nodded and went away to prepare Will's order as Will walked to a table, a waiter came bye, and will asked for a nice cold glass of apple juice, Will's comfort drink. Needless to say however, she had come back with something quite unexpected. “It’s been an honour and a pleasure to serve with you sir. May you, your ship and your crew, live long and prosper”, she had said. The Captain had merely nodded, then he did something entirely un-Vulcanlike. He actually stood and embraced the Councillor! The only way she could think of to encourage at this juncture was to keep her big yap shut. Well, probably Klingon too, for that matter. Actually, there was probably a version in just about any race you chose to find. But she'd been thinking of the Vulcan version and that had to be worth something. The Captain nodded respectfully, then he added one more thing. "There will always be a place for you here Jynea, spare a thought for us.... at least once in a while" "If I send my few thoughts to the Spectre, how will I manage to find my shoes?" Jynea asked with more facetiousness than volume. The Captain then saluted the Councillor. "Live long and prosper Jynea.... may your path from here on in be fruitful and...... conventional", said the Captain. "Conventional, how boring."
