He still ached, but he had persuaded himself that he deserved the pain and tried to ignore it. He glanced over to the door as the sound of it swishing open caught his attention. He didn't look long enough to see who entered; he instead focused his attention on the throbbing pulse in his throat. The aching sensation of bruises was like visiting a time from his past, an angry time he would rather hide in the corners of his mind. Regan's glance swept around Sickbay as she entered. She located Norm almost immediately, but decided to speak to the nursing staff first to make sure it was OK to speak with him. "Excuse me," she asked the most senior nurse she could see, "I'm Counsellor Alessi. I'd like to speak to Ens Harper?" Nurse Kitty Fisher looked at the counsellor. "He's over there, bed 5. Are you a friend of his or is this an official visit, if you don't mind me asking?" Kitty knew that the counselling department would have received a report about the fight and the injuries as a matter of course, and that all three of the officers who'd been in Sickbay could expect a session with a counsellor afterwards. "I'm here as a friend," Regan answered. "Is that OK?" Kitty smiled. "Of course. But if you're here as a friend, can you persuade him to let me give him an analgesic and something to reduce the bruising? There's really no need for him to suffer, you know?" Regan nodded. "I'll try," she said, remembering the scalded hands. "Thank you," Kitty said. "You're welcome to stay as long as you want." Regan thanked the nurse and made her way over to Norm's biobed. "Hello Norm," she said quietly. Norm turned to look at her and smiled sheepishly, "I bet I look lovely," he said, "but it's nice to see you." He swallowed hard at the lump in his throat but didn't succeed in moving it at all. "How have you been, Regan?" He could see the nurse over Regan's shoulder, shaking her head in disapproval. He gave a mental shrug and looked back at Regan. "Do you think I'm a complete idiot?" he asked suddenly. "I've been better than you , by the looks of it," Regan grinned as she pulled up a seat. "But then again, I wasn't mixing it with a bunch of Klingons last night," she added dryly. "As for whether I think you're a complete idiot, no, probably not. Though I do think you should let them give you something for the pain and bruising. There's no need to suffer any more than you have already. Unless of course you enjoy pain?" she asked him quizzically. "Who the hell enjoys pain?" Norm thought for a moment then added, "No, I'm not a masochist. I just-" Norm forced a small puff of air past his lips, "I want to remember how it feels... It doesn't make any sense. Maybe I should. Would you, eh." He gestured at the nurse hoping Regan would understand that he didn't want to torture his vocal cords. Regan nodded, then rose and spoke quietly to the nurse, who smiled and picked up a tray with a couple of hyposprays on it. "Right, Mr Harper, let's make you more comfortable," Kitty said, pressing one of the hyposprays against his neck gently, avoiding the bruised area as much as she could. "there, that's the analgesic, I'll give it a couple of moments..." she glanced down at the watch fastened to the front of her uniform, counting silently to herself. "That should be more comfortable and now..." she selected the second hypospray and applied that in its turn. "This will reduce the swelling in your throat and make it easier to talk. I'll come back in a bit and get rid of all those bruises later so you don't look like the thing from the black lagoon at the wedding! But I'm sure you want to talk to your friend for a while without me hanging around overhearing every word, now don't you? So I'll be off and count the bedpans while you talk." Nurse Fisher grinned at the two of them and left them to it. "Thank you for letting her do that," Regan said, smiling as she sat down again. "It'll be much easier talking to you without having to bend down to put my ear next to your lips just to hear what you say! So, Mr Norm Harper, what do you have to say for yourself now that you can talk without wincing?" Norm grinned, pleased with the result of the drugs, "Thanks for talkin' me into it." He said, surprised at how his voice now came to him more easily, "Good Lord, the wedding. I totally forgot when it is!" Norm sat up to talk more comfortably with Regan. He sat for a moment, before finding a small laugh escaping past his lips, "I'm so glad you came, Regan. How've things been going?" Norm fought the urge to pick up Regan's hand in his and instead filled his lungs with air. "Is there anything to eat around here?" Regan sensed his uncertainty but wasn't sure of the cause even as she laughed at his last question. "Things have been quiet without you around, " she answered. "And I missed finding out what a Boston whaler - is that right? - is. But we'll have plenty of time for that later, no doubt. And good things are always worth waiting for. As for food, I'm sure I can find something, if the nurse or doctor allows it. But wouldn't you rather let them finish treating you and then come with me and have a late breakfast together? You know what they say about Sickbay, if the treatment doesn't kill you , the food will," she joked. Norm chuckled, "You'll love the Boston Whaler. Well have to go later today." He promised before glancing around to find the room absent of a nurse. "When do you think I can get outta here? I'm so tired of looking at the inside of medical facilities!" He was still enjoying the sound of his strengthening voice, and he was getting restless confined to a biobed. He caught sight of a passing nurse and tried to catch her attention, but she continued on with her work. "What do you have to do to get someone over here?" He asked, "keel over in pain?" He waited until the nurse began to pass on her return journey and called out to her, his voice cracking unexpectedly. He laughed at himself, "I feel like a teenager again." He said so only Regan could hear and then he asked of the nurse, "When would be an acceptable time for me to high-tail it outta here?" Nurse Fisher grinned. "As soon as the doctor says you can. I'll fetch her now if you like?" "Please," Norm said, trying to keep polite. (reply Marto iyw) -------------------------------------------- (USS Mystique – Turbolift - CMO Lt Vren Marto - 0635) Marto was in the turbolift when Nurse Fisher's call came through asking her to report to Sickbay and she informed the nurse that she would be there shortly. As the turbolift doors opened Marto strode along the hall and into Sickbay, catching Kitty's eye and calling the nurse over to her side. In her quiet voice Kitty updated Marto regarding Ensign Harper, his refusal to be treated by the EMH and his wish to be discharged as soon as possible now. Marto smiled in amusement. "Yes well, we'll just see about that shall we. I'll go sort this idiocy out now." Crossing over to the Ensign Marto was glad to see Regan with him and realised that it was probably her who had talked some sense into him. Stopping at his bed she greeting Regan, "Good morning Regan, how are you?", but refrained from saying anything to Ensign Harper and merely resorted to running her scanner over him. She stared at the scanner for as long as she could letting the silence extend until finally she turned to him. "Well Ensign, the concussion you suffered seems to be fine now and Nurse Fisher tells me that you have allowed her to administer pain relief and treat your bruising. Your throat is only badly bruised and will heal itself in a few days, although you might find yourself a little hoarse until it does. As for your dislocated wrist, I will fix that now since you have already been given pain medication." Marto took his hand in hers and gently feeling where the bones and tendons were quickly rotated his wrist 45% until she heard it click. "There you go Ensign that should be it fixed now. I will have the nurse bandage it to give you some stability to your wrist and it should be as good as new in a few days as long as you don't abuse it." "As far as I am concerned you are now free to leave Sickbay, however I have one final comment to make before you go. Please never again abuse a member of my staff the way you did last evening. I am aware that as an engineer you may regard the EMH as a piece of equipment however I regard all my staff in sickbay as equally valuable and equally entitled to respect and I will not tolerate abuse of them by anyone." "I don't plan to take this any further today Ensign, but if this happens again don't expect me to be so lenient. From now on if you need medical treatment I expect you to accept it from the EMH in the same manner as you would accept it from me or any other person in Sickbay otherwise you will find yourself spending a lot longer than overnight here. Do I make myself clear?" (Reply Norm) "Good, you may leave now Ensign." Turning to Regan Marto smiled at her. "Take him away and talk some sense into him please." (Reply Norm and Regan IYW) (Posted by Marilyn) -------------------------------------------- Mission: Port of Call Day: 2 Stardate: 2407.02.18 (USS Mystique, Personal Quarters, ACOUNS Regan Alessi and ACEO Norm Harper, 0718) "So, what do you want for breakfast?" Regan asked as she headed for the replicator. "Actually," Norm said thoughtfully, "I'd like a cheeseburger with extra cheese. Something that will make me think I'm eating junk even though the replicators won't allow it. Something unbreakfasty." Regan got Norm's order and her own and sat down at the table with him. She sipped her hot choclate appreciatively, and looked at Norm, a twinkle in her eye. "Alright then," she said. "Give. What's up?" He looked at her quizzically and took a large bite of his sandwich. He pretended to try to chew quickly, but wanted to give himself time to think. Finally he swallowed, the partially mashed food slipping down his sore throat in one solid mass. "What d'you mean?" He asked, putting his burger down and wiping his hands on his trousers. Regan smiled gently. "You know I'm a Betazoid, and a trained counsellor. I pick up on strong emotions, even if I don't know the reason for them without reading your mind. Which of course I wouldn't do without permission. In sickbay I couldn't help but notice you felt a little... uncertain? uncomfortable? during our conversation. I couldn't see that anything we were talking about would cause it directly, so I wondered if there were anything specific that is bothering you?" Norm could feel his face getting hot and new he was changing colour, "Oh, that." He said eying his food, "I - er. Well, this is awkward." He wanted to find an excuse to leave, or a way to change the subject, but found nothing. "With Travis and Marto getting married," he started, but found that it really had nothing to do with anything, "I've been thinking..." he trailed off, reached for his sandwich and instead laced his fingers through his hair. Regan nodded. "I've been thinking a lot too, Norm," she said softly. "And there's something l'd like to tell you, something that I want you to know before you... before we... something I'd like you to know." She smiled a little wryly. "You know, you'd think with all my training, I'd be better at this but usually I'm the one listening to confidences not telling them. So this isn't easy for me. You remember the Zephyr and what happened there? That her captain was killed?" Regan wasn't sure how much he knew about what had happened, whether it was common knowledge that Ash Physioc was responsible or not. She bit her lip. "He... that man is... was... Menno's father, Alexis Montague. I hadn't had anything to do with him personally since long before Menno was born but he was the one who attacked the last ship I was on, the Marie Celeste. I don't think he knew I was there, nor do I think he knew I was there before he attacked this ship, but still. It was a shock to find he was such a -" she bit back what she had been going to say. "I knew he was ruthless and ambitious, thought not just HOW ruthless he could be, and long before Doenitz got to where he is today Alexis had nailed his colours to Doenitz's mast, in fact that's when we split up. Menno has no idea who his father is, or even at the moment that he is dead. Of course I'll have to tell him but I wanted to tell you first, because... because you're important to me even though we haven't known one another long. I... I needed you to know, that's all. In case... in case it makes a difference. I really hope it doesn't, but I'll understand if it does." She sat quietly, her hands fingers lacing together tightly as her hands lay on the table in front of her, waiting to see what his reaction would be. Norm looked at her hand and this time he did not fight the urge. He reached out and took her hand in his and looked her square in the eye. "Regan," he said, "how can you even think that someone else's actions could change my opinions of you. I- We haven't known each other that long, you know that, but-but I swear I'll explode if I don't say something. Already you and Menno mean so much to me. I don't know if you feel anything for me more than friendship, but there's something else inside for me. It's like - it's. Never mind." He let her hand go gently as a wave of embarrassment washed over him and he stood. Regan stood up too, trembling slightly. "But I do mind," she said softly. "You *are* important to me Norm, not just as a friend but as much more. This may sound silly but I feel as if I've known you for years, not days. And I know that Menno looks forward to spending time with you almost as much as I do. We've been alone for a long time, he and I, and then you came into our lives and brought warmth and sunshine with you. I can't imagine my life without you in it," she said simply, looking up into his blue eyes with her own dark ones shining like the pools of Heshbon. "I'll show she you," she whispered. Slowly, gently, she lowered her shields and opened her mind completely to his so he could see how much he meant to her. It was for her the greatest gesture of trust she could make. Norm had never felt such a sensation before. He stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her shoulders, "Regan," he whispered to her, "you don't have to. I know." He reached up with his right index finger and tilted back her chin so he could look her straight in the eye. "I know," he repeated. (posted by Liz and Justine) ------------------------------------- (USS Mystique - Observation Lounge- ACEO Ensign (sg) Norman Harper - 1119) Norm sat in silence listening to the other officers speak, knowing that his turn to speak wasn't in the far future. As Ranae finished her version of the story, Saleke looked up in Norm's direction and he shrank as the Vulcan spoke "Ensign Harper please relate for the record what you saw and how you came to be involved in the fracas." Norm swallowed imaginary excess spit from his dry mouth and began to form his scattered thoughts into words, "I heard the sounds of a brawl from the promenade, sir." He began, "I didn't want to get involved, but I couldn't resist a look at the situation," he wanted to add that he had tried to keep calm and to walk away, but he didn't want to risk the need of further explanation. "I saw the unfair odds against Lieutenant Garrett, sir and I went to his aide." He was sounding like an idiot so he stopped. Norm thought he read a slightly disbelieving look on Saleke's face, but placed it on his own disappointedness. "Is there anything else you would like to add for the record Mr. Harper?" Saleke asked. "No, sir." Norm wanted to schedule a meeting with Dr. Mias, but he didn't feel he needed to say so. With the debriefing nearly concluded Saleke turned to the last two ladies involved. "Ms. Darson according to the security report you happened upon the altercation near its conclusion, what did you see and how did you become involved?" Norm stifled a sigh of relief as the Vulcan's attention was turned away and he began to knot his fingers, hoping the girls wouldn't take too long to finish. (reply Saleke, none) (posted by Justine) ------------------------------------ (USS Mystique - Observation Lounge - Lt. Mason Garrett and Ensign Cynthia Darson - 1123) After Saleke concluded the debriefing session, Cindy rose to her feet and moved over to stand behind Mason. Leaning down she whispered, "We'll talk later. See ya'." He watched her leave wondering what would be coming next. But this was not the time to think about personal matters. When everyone else had filed out, two pairs of eyes averted their full attention to the Captain. (Reply: Saleke) (Posted by David) ----------------------------- (USS Mystique - Observation Lounge- CO, Captain Saleke - 1125) The Vulcan watched impassively as all but two of the officers made their quiet exits from the lounge with grateful looks upon their faces, seemingly relieved that they had not run into a scathing rebuke on their actions of the night before and the glances they threw the two Lieutenants spoke volumes that they were glad they had not been chosen to remain. One puzzling thing humans had run into dealing with Vulcans is that the normal emotional cues they relied on to make judgements as to the content of an upcoming communication were absent, had Saleke been a human for instance he might have sighed or smiled to indicate the subject was closed and that what they were going to talk about was of a more positive note. There was none of that of course, merely an unemotional look that he gave the two men as the door closed behind Cynthia Darson, the last officer to leave. The two watched him closely as he folded his arms across his chest and leaned back in his chair. "Gentlemen I received orders earlier from Commodore Hikagi that the crew and officer contingent of the Mystique is being transferred to a vessel in SpaceDock Phoenix nearing completion." (Reply: Jason or Mason) "The transfer process will be gradual as more of the ship becomes completed, at this time we will begin moving the engineering department first over to the new ship to expedite the completion of it." (Jason or Mason) "The ship is a Prometheus class vessel, a warship and has received the designation of USS Hades, NX 60637. I have also been ordered to choose a complete command crew and am in need of an executive officer." He looked toward Jason. "Lieutenant as 2/0 of the Mystique you would normally be next in line for promotion." He leaned forward and clasped his hands on the tabletop. "I have watched you closely since coming aboard the Mystique however and while you have made positive strides as an officer I am not satisfied that you are ready yet for that posting therefore it will be necessary for me to pass you over at this time." (Reply: Jason IYW) "This decision was made based on your record Mr. Dema and my observation of your comportment and was not made with any bias toward you. In time if you continue the progress you have been making you will make a fine first officer but that time is not now. You will continue in your current capacity as 2/0." Sitting back he said. "You are dismissed Lieutenant." (Reply: Jason IYW) After Jason had left the captain turned his attention to Mason. "Lieutenant Garrett I have considered carefully the officers available for promotion and found only one logical choice. You have been an outstanding officer with a record of exceptional leadership skills, hard work and high intelligence therefore I have made the decision to offer the posting of First Officer to you." He reached into a pocket and took out two small black boxes, after looking at them for an instant he placed one in front of himself and the other halfway between himself and Mason. "The job is yours if you will accept it." (Reply: Mason) The black box held a single black pip to be added to Mason's collar marking him as a Lieutenant Commander. After Mason placed it there Saleke spoke again. "Congratulations Commander, your first order of business will be to coordinate the movement of non-essential engineering staff to the new ship with the new Chief Engineering Officer." He picked up the other small black box. (Reply: Mason) An eyebrow raised to a point. "I logically would not have had Ensign Harper standing by on the bridge had I believed you would have refused the post. You are dismissed Commander, please send Mr. Harper in when you leave." (Reply: Mason) (Posted by Charles) -------------------------------- (USS Mystique - Observation Lounge - Lt. Mason Garrett - 1128) Mason knew as well as any human that Vulcan body language was not overly-expressive, but he could see their newly-promoted captain was about to broach a subject of great importance. "Gentlemen I received orders earlier from Commodore Hikagi that the crew and officer contingent of the Mystique is being transferred to a vessel in SpaceDock Phoenix nearing completion." "A new ship?" Mason mused after a moment of surprise. "When will we begin transferring the crew." "The transfer process will be gradual as more of the ship becomes completed, at this time we will begin moving the engineering department first over to the new ship to expedite the completion of it." Mason was recently made aware of only two new ships in dock that were being prepped for launch, the Champlain and the Hades. "The ship is a Prometheus class vessel, a warship and has received the designation of USS Hades, NX 60637. I have also been ordered to choose a complete command crew and am in need of an executive officer." He looked toward Jason. "Lieutenant as 2/0 of the Mystique you would normally be next in line for promotion." The captain sat forward interlocking his fingers as he continued. Mason's eyebrows raised with a growing suspicion as Saleke reached into a pocket and took out two small black boxes. After glancing at them he placed one in front of himself and the other halfway between himself and Mason. "The job is yours if you will accept it." A knot of apprehension and excitement clenched Mason's stomach as he picked up the small container nearest him and opened it. The overhead lighting glinted across the black pip inside as he tilted the box and let its contents roll into his right palm. He looked at it only a moment before lifting it between his thumb and forefinger. "I will endeavor to fulfill the responsibilities of this position to the best of my ability." For the first time in a long time, the young human hoped he was not moving into something out of his depth, then he calmed his anxieties and proceeded with clear analysis. After Mason placed the insignia on his collar Saleke spoke again. "Congratulations Commander, your first order of business will be to coordinate the movement of non-essential engineering staff to the new ship with the new Chief Engineering Officer." He picked up the other small black box. A slight smile quirked the edge of Mason's mouth. "I get the idea our new CEO is sitting on the bridge as we speak." Somehow, he knew there was a high probability that I would take the FO job, he thought privately. An eyebrow raised to a point. "I logically would not have had Ensign Harper standing by on the bridge had I believed you would have refused the post," Saleke replied as if reading Mason's mind. "You are dismissed Commander, please send Mr. Harper in when you leave." "Aye sir," Lt. Commander Garrett said as he rose then moved for the exit. --------------------------------- (USS Mystique - Bridge - ACEO Ensign (sg) Norman Harper - 1138) Norm sat at the redout panels pretending to read what was being fed to him, when in fact he was simply staring at the moving symbols and lights wondering what kind of mess he had really thrown himself into. He looked around the bridge at the other officers and began to nervously run his tongue across his teeth and back several times. He looked up suddenly as Mason appeared on the bridge, but didn't turn round to face him. He waited until a hand landed on his shoulder to acknowledge his friend, "The captain is ready to see you now, Norm. Some new developments have come to light that you and I will need to discuss. We'll meet at 1300 in the first officer's office." Norm nodded wondering what his future held. He almost over-looked Mason's cheerful disposition, but was caught unsuspecting at the mention of the first officer's office. He lifted an eyebrow, but couldn't find the voice to ask or congratulate. "Thank you." he managed instead before standin and starting toward the observation lounge. (reply Mason iyw) ------------------------------------- (USS Mystique - Bridge - Lt. "Sir," he said, falling into attention and throwing the his CO a salute before falling silent, those few words were a testimony to his emotional state. "Sit down Ensign." The Vulcan said evenly, after Norm had taken a seat he spoke again. "Lieutenant Commander Garrett has been promoted and is taking the position of First Officer Mr. Harper which is why you have been called into the lounge." He opened his hand to reveal the second small black box and placed it on the table so that Norm could see it. (Reply: Norm Harper) "This contains a black pip to be added to your collar Lieutenant Harper." An eyebrow lifted at the human’s reaction. "You are being promoted to Lieutenant junior grade and made chief over the engineering department, do you have any questions Mr. Harper?" (Reply: Norm) "Your first task will be to meet with Commander Garrett, he will apprise you of the situation and work with you in the coming weeks. Congratulations Lieutenant Harper." (Reply: Norm) Posted by Charles) ------------------------------ (USS Mystique - Observation Lounge – LT John Fredericks- 1458) John looked up at the Chron on his office wall and noticed it was almost time to be at the meeting instead of leaving for it. He grabbed up a PADD and hurried to the lift door. He got there in time to ride up with a young ensign and went through the obligatory small talk on the way. She got off a few decks before him while he continued to the correct floor. The doors whooshed open and John hurried out and over to the Observation lounge. As he entered in he couldn’t help but notice a feel of Deja’Vu since it hadn’t been that long ago he was attending his first meeting on the Boudicca as the “New Guy”. He found a seat at the table and placed the PADD down in front of himself and took a deep breath and remembered a phrase that one of his academy instructors had once told him. “Never let them see you sweat….Or bleed”. He went through a few mental calming routines he had learned and looked around to see who (what) all was there. (Reply any, IYW) (posted by Kirk McClendon) -------------------------------------------- (USS Mystique - Observation Lounge - ATAC Ensign (Jg) Ammon Ranae - 1459) Dr. Vren smiled ruefully. "I no longer find that surprising unfortunately. Bajorans have become fairly xenophobic since the last time I was home. A sad statement of fact, but unfortunately true, as I found out earlier today. There are still too many Bajorans who think that everyone who is not 100% Bajoran are somehow less Bajoran than everyone else. Please understand that I am not one who subscribes to that particular brand of idiocy. However, whilst I do disagree with them, I understand, in some respects why they feel this way." As there were now several more officers entering and the meeting would soon start, Ranae simply smiled pleasantly. "I'd like to hear the reasons why they feel that way, Doctor. I always just thought it was a hatred of the Cardassians. Perhaps at a more leisurely time you would be kind enough to enlighten me further?" (reply Vren IYW) Her attention was drawn to Naraht who was talking to the other science officer. She chuckled to herself as she listened to him joking with the Lt. Commander. “’New Chief of the Science Department’ is an incredibly awkward name, shall we call you something else instead?” asked Naraht, swaying his phalange in laughter. “I would think that choosing such a name for you at birth would have caused no end of confusion throughout your growth, particularly during your academic pursuits! "This is Lieutenant Commander Holis Gralen," Saleke interjected. ~Trust a Vulcan to be devoid of humour.~ That in itself was amusing and Ranae chuckled some more. "You can call me Holis," The Betazoid said quickly. "I don't stand on regulations within my department and the rank is mostly honorary anyway." He glanced over toward Saleke. "At least that's the way I see it." ~Make that Vulcan AND Betazoid are devoid of humour.~ Ranae could barely contain her amusement. “Well,” said Naraht cautiously, “I don’t mind if the Captain doesn’t.” "How long have you been on board?" Holis asked as he took the nearest seat to this ACSO and lowered his voice so that Ranae could no longer follow the conversation, so she sipped on her ice-water and waited patiently for the meeting to begin. (Reply Vren IYW) (posted by Sal) ----------------------------------------- (USS Mystique - Observation Lounge - Lt. Mason Garrett - 1459) James T. Kirk was right about what he'd written in his memoirs. "Vulcan is only planet in the galaxy that could boast of logical-minded females." Women of other races had often frustrated and annoyed Mason Garret. His first love had been a lovely Vulcan girl named T'Prel. The relationship had lasted little more than a few months but he remembered how very disciplined she was and, of course, characteristically impassive and logical. Then there were the other women he'd grown fond of and even come to love since that time. There had been the tempestuous Darlana, a Bajoran cadet at the Academy. Then Cindy Darson. Then Angeni Trommashere. All of them showing a similar tendency for a stormy temperament, sometimes over the most illogical things. He could understand the toilet seat problem, which was easy enough to avoid. Of course one slip-up and -- well, the rest of the day was never pleasant. Mason's flustered state calmed as he walked from his quarters to the entrance of the Observation Lounge. He paused momentarily, drew in a breath and focused his mind to the matters at hand. His day had started quite pleasantly with a walk through Geneva's Promenade area with Cindy. That had been interrupted by a short briefing session which had to do with the brawl of the day before. Then engineering had called him because of some anomalous power shifts in certain systems, which was still was being checked out by the Engine Room crew. To crown the day's events, Cindy had shown up at his quarters a five minutes before the staff meeting was set to begin to talk. She apologized for her abruptness earlier that day, but he said he hadn't been offended. She then moved closer told him he was too nice sometimes and kissed him on the cheek. With a more serious look in her eyes, she took his right hand in both of hers looked up at him and asked if he wanted to marry Doctor Trommashere. The question left him speechless momentarily then he said he cared a great deal for her but had not considered marriage as a short term goal. She thanked him for his honesty then left teary-eyed. Mason was left more confused by her reaction than by the question. Moving through the lounge door, stoic and dispassionate, Mason found most of the staff assembled already and made his way to a vacant seat (Reply: Anyone) Mason suddenly remembered Cindy kissing him and wiped the light pink lip coloring that she'd left on his cheek. A short tittering rippled through the small assembly then Saleke called the meeting to order. (Reply: Saleke) (Posted by David) ------------------------------------------------ (USS Mystique - Observation Lounge- CO, Captain Saleke - 1500) With the bulk of the officers having arrived Saleke brought the meeting to order. "This staff meeting has a three-fold purpose, to announce the arrival of two new officers to the ship, to announce promotions and to pass along to the senior officers of the ship that we are being transferred from the Mystique to a new vessel." (Reply: Any) "The new ship is a Prometheus class attack cruiser named the USS Hades and the estimated time of our departure on it is 2407.02.31. I was notified of this only this morning by Commodore Hikagi. The officers and crew of the Mystique will be moved gradually to the Hades preceded by the engineering department which will add their efforts to those fitting the ship to insure it is launched on time. Commander Garrett has been chosen to be First Officer and will be facilitating the transfer along with Lieutant Harper who has taken the position of Chief of Engineering." A Ship for worriers if that wont impress Margot nothing will~ Travis thought to him self excited to see the new ship. Travis was happy for his good friend Mason on his promotion if any one deserves it it is him. "Congratulations Mason." Travis said with a nod. (Reply Mason IUW) Then Travis looked over at Norman. "Congratulations Lt. Harper" Travis sead with a nod. (reply Harper IUW) "Sir," asked Naraht. "Will we need to move our present equipment from this ship to the new ship or will we get new equipment? I had noticed coming aboard that some of our equipment in our science labs was…. a little smooth around the edges and some of it could be upgraded to better effect efficiency." "Sir If I may" Travis sead stepping in then he looked over at Naraht "Ensign We just loaded some new updated equipment onboard the mystique the Manifest is on file. That equipment will just be transferred to the Hades. Travis said as he looked at his PADD. Is it that time of year humans have for gift giving? I don’t know the others very well, only by sight in the corridors. I shall wish to take a look at the manifest with you, if I could, after this meeting.” Naraht, relieved that the science department would have new upgraded equipment, felt as excited as if he had been newly hatched. (Reply Travis Keswick) (Posted by Sheila) ----------------------------------------------- (USS Mystique - Observation Lounge- CO, Captain Saleke - 1505) After Travis had congratulated the two newly promoted officers t he first question came from the inquisitive Horta. “Sir,” asked Naraht. “Will we need to move our present equipment from this ship to the new ship or will we get new equipment? I had noticed coming aboard that some of our equipment in our science labs was…. a little smooth around the edges and some of it could be upgraded to better effect efficiency.” "Sir If I may" Travis asked. "Our two new officers are Lieutenant John Fredericks who is taking the position of Chief of Security." Saleke inclined his head slightly toward John. (Reply: John) "With the departure of Lieutenant Ketal commander Gralen is transferring to the ship to take over the science department." With that introduction Holis smiled easily at everyone assembled and spoke simply. "Thank you Captain and hello everyone, I'm hoping to get to know you and am looking forward to working with you." With that he sat back in his chair. "I belive everyone is aware that Lieutenant Vren has taken over the medical department." Saleke gave a brief nod at her. Saleke said flatly indicating the change of pace to ships business. (Reply: Any) (Posted by Charles) -------------------------------------------- (USS Mystique - Observation Lounge - Asst CSO Ensign Naraht (jg) - 1506) Naraht looked around him. He was confused. ~Where is every one else from the Science Department?~ He was surprised to see that other than Commander Holis who was so new he couldn't know what they had been working on, no one else was present from the Science Department to report on their work and the Captain was waiting. “I have a lot to go over Captain. Before I start with my notes on the planetary information, let me make a recommendation. Due to the attack on myself, Ensign Ashlitu Physioc, and Geneva Security officer Lt. Lily Lee on the station Promenade earlier today, if the upcoming wedding and any other gatherings are held, they should be well screened as far as guests and large amounts of security personnel should be appropriately armed and ready for crowd control,” said Naraht. “In inquiring after the Lieutenant’s condition, I was speaking to the male human doctor in the station’s sickbay from our bridge directly before this meeting who indicated that the Humans for Humanity had been causing trouble on the station. I found it strange and unusual that he had received other inquiries about how the attack happened and specifically pertaining to how the Lieutenant was hurt. I question who else could potentially be interested but possibly those who may have been causing the trouble that would be connected with the Humans for Humanity group. Before the attack, the Lieutenant informed both Ensign Physioc and I that someone had caused an engineered virus to be let loose on the station to make humans sicken and die and then spread rumors that aliens were responsible. There apparently were other attacks on non-humans as well. Lt. Lily Lee and Ensign Physioc were hurt defending me from a violent mob. I have recommended both be checked for any damage to their hearing organs due to my piercingly loud sonic defense I used to help repel the crowd, once they are conscious.” (Reply Saleke) “You will find my requests for help within the Mystique’s and Geneva ’s communication records. I sent rapid electronic bursts, explaining the situation and requesting help. But I received acknowledgment the second time only from Station Security.” (Reply Saleke) “Order noted, sir. I will comply,” said Naraht. Naraht paused, consulting his PADD using the tip of his main phalange on the edge of the table. “I think I have finally found a way to explain in Galactic Standard the sensation I felt while on the newly discovered planet in the Beta quadrant. Have any of you ever played with strong bar magnets either as a child or during your science classes? One can easily use one magnet to push the other around on a smooth flat surface such as a floor or table by facing like polar ends toward each other.” “Most planets’ natural magnetic fields act as an overall bubble. Once down below the bubble on the surface of the planet such as Earth, I cannot normally directly see or detect a planetary magnetic field easily without a tricorder or other equipment.” “The sensation that I felt when on the planet in question can be described much the same as bar magnets repelling and attracting each other. We Horta can detect and ‘see’ magnetic fields due to the specialized organs we have, as well as electrical and bio-chemical energy. As you may know magnetic energy and electrical energy are closely related. The sensation I felt was overall weaker that what one feels when using strong bar magnets to repel and attract each other, but on the planet I felt it all over me, indicating to me that the magnetic field is more widespread. I also could detect it as a very light haze.” “To try to explain this odd magnetic field change which has apparently happened within recent time as per cosmic the cosmic timeline, I would like to look for iron ore and other magnetic substances in the following areas to help rule out any natural causes; the system’s Oort cloud or field, the location of iron ore and any other magnetic ores both on the planet and within the system overall, the asteroid field and any asteroids outside of the normal fields, the planets’ two natural satellites, any rogue planets or planetoids, comets or any other passing bodies, any other planets and their satellites within the system with regards to rotational sequence as per metallic content and their magnetic fields. I would like to check for any other foreign planetary bodies within the last three years.” Naraht added, “Solar activity such as solar flares and sunspots that could also oddly affect planetary magnetic fields should be considered and evaluated.” He continued, “Once we rule out any natural causes or if in looking into these possible natural causes we find other evidence, we can begin working on the assumption that a sentient being or beings has or is causing these anomalies. Therefore I would like to additionally look for the following: equipment or technology especially machinery, structures, possibly underground or in a mountain range, hidden in a cave or gorge, possibly hidden in deep ocean trenches.” “Depending upon the technology utilized it may be very small or have more than one location or station or be one large structure. It is also possible that a ‘station’ or said technology of some kind could be on one or both of the moons. This technology is likely to have its own magnetic field. It is possible that the more advanced the technology the more likely to have ease of control via one structure.” Naraht paused again, checking his notes on his PADD and then continued. “We would also need to look for any life signs of sentient creatures. There could be some type of superpower creature such as one of the Q Continuum at work somewhere in the system, and at some point they may show themselves. Caution regarding such a creature or creatures would need to be utilized.” Pausing again, Naraht made a vocal noise much like a sigh of frustration through his vox and a ripple flared across his many smaller phalangi. “Granted I know this is speculation, but we are operating within a deficit of data. So our speculation could be wrong, but I agree with Lt. Ketal and Ensign Cynthia Darson that there is no doubt that our evidence points toward the planet in question as bearing more resemblance to a planet that is in process of or has been terraformed. Thus we have the need to logically rule out any natural causes as unexpected factors.” “Are there any questions?” asked Ensign Naraht. He felt a little nervous that he was making such potentially wild speculations, but the small amount of collected data at this point hinted at these possibilities and so had to be aired. He desperately wanted more data. (Reply Saleke, Any) (Posted by Sheila __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
