He was not a small man, but he wasn't large either. However, after any extended length of time on a Stallion Shuttle with fifty other Marines, even a child of five would be cramped. He cracked his neck as he stepped to the side to let the other Marines past. Captain Rivers was already out; she'd been the first out of the shuttle. The Marine took a breath and cracked his back, then bellowed. "Boudicca Expeditionary Force, FALL OUT!" That caused the Marines to move just a little bit faster, to drop their gear and snap to attention with just a bit more spit and polish. Not much, but enough that Drizzt wasn't immediately tempted to rip their heads off. Not yet. He assumed parade rest, "Captain Rivers, permission to see my troops to quarters?" (reply: Rivers) "Aye Sir." He waited until she'd wandered off and the last of the Marines from the Boudicca, the hundred comprising the small expeditionary force he was in command of that were headed to the Champlain, fell into position by squad. He'd brought a demi-company, just enough squads to make an effective unit in ship-to-ship or ship-to-ground combat. They would eventually go back to the Boudicca, they were mission-assigned for the moment (as was Spider), but for now they would be Champlain Marines in all but name. The return to the Boudicca was the one thing Spider was not going to keep his mind on. That the Champlain needed Marines, if only temporarily, was the only reason he was able to stay with Susan. Still, that wasn't something he needed to dwell on. And the best way to stop dwelling was to exercise, to work off the tension. "MARINES!" he bellowed, "Welcome to Geneva, some of you might remember this place from way back. For those who do, good... you'll know where you're going. For those who don't, you're about to get a tour of the place. Geneva has a lot of open space; I think we should inspect it!" A few groans punctuated the silence, but only a few. They all knew Spider as a harsh task-master, to much groaning would double their work load. "XO!" he said. His Squad XO Stepped forward. Spider knew the man had briefly been assigned to Geneva, that was enough. "XO, these men need a run. Take them around Combat Country a half dozen times, that ought to work off the laziness from the trip." "Sir, YESSOR!" the man bellowed before taking a step forward and turning on his heel to face the rest of his men. "Marines, leeeeeft face!" As one, the Boudicca Marines turned on their heel. Spider crossed his arms behind him as his XO started the Marines out at a march, which was followed within moments by double-time. The Marines filed out of the shuttle bay at a goodly pace, leaving Spider in their wake. Normally he'd have followed, but he had other things to do today... like give greetings to Geneva's MCO. They would have a few days to kill; playing with other Marines was as good a way as any. (reply: Rivers) (posted by Trout) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - Marine Docking Bay - Champlain CO, Captain Susan Rivers - 0901) Susan had been first off the shuttle, glad beyond measure to get away from the cramped quarters. The docking bay was almost empty at this time and it didn't take long to complete the formalities. As she did so, she could hear Spider yelling at the marines and suppressed a smile. For two pins she'd have yelled at some of them herself after the cramped conditions they'd endured, but she knew that in Spider's case the yelling had a purpose other than letting off steam. Having received the temporary quarters assignments for those awaiting the return of the Champlain, she turned back and walked over to where the group of marines stood at attention. Spider came to parade rest and said, "Captain Rivers, permission to see my troops to quarters?" "Permission granted, Major. I've received allocation of quarters for everyone else, and now I have to report in to command. Report to me when you've finished." "Aye Sir." Susan nodded, then with a final glance she left in search of Caskie and the others who had travelled with them from the Boudicca. (Reply Caskie, Linskens, dela Rosa, anyone else) When she had gathered them all together, she informed them of their assigned quarters, and told them to consider themselves on leave until the Champlain arrived. "I know Dr Caskie will agree with me that you all need and deserve it, especially after the last mission and the events of the last week or so. So although I may need to speak with you about arrangements before our new berth arrives, you are for now officially off-duty. Enjoy yourselves!" (reply any who wish, room for more if needed) She watched them leave for a moment, wishing she would have as much free time herself, to spend with Leonal. ~Who knows how long we'll have together?~ she thought sadly, then told herself to be glad for the time they had. They were lucky he'd been assigned here at all, even temporarily. (reply any) (posted by Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Geneva Station- Promenade- FO- Lt. Cmdr. Ahmed Ibn Salid- 0905) Ahmed had finished his Rhubarb pie and Turkish coffee. As promised it had turned out to be a unique culinary experience that he wouldn't mind undertaking again at some future date. He could have chosen to wonder through the promenade, check out a few of the various shops, but his sense of duty commanded that he instead report to Command to determine if they had any plans for him before the Champlain arrived. As he walked, he thought back to the Going away party that he had attended for Jono Janeway and Edward Wolfe. Both men had been key members of the Nimitz staff when he had just started serving there. The party had been a fun affair, if not a little stuffy. He wondered how Jono was doing since Edward's death. They had been close friends, and Even Ahmed who had only knnow the man in passing had felt a certain degree of loss at his fate. Jono, who knew him much better and longer than Ahmed must certainly be upset over the events that had taken his Captain and friend from him. (reply none) (posted by Daniel Greene) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - Secondary Shuttlebay - ACSO Ensign John Linskens - 0906) "Hand." John's distinctly spoken word turned a few heads as the group was ready to disembark. Then some smiled as they saw the science officer's outstretched hand and the small hand of the two year old reaching for it. "Daddy? Me carry Win'ton?" her soft voice rang out as she looked at the Peruvian Howler that was sitting on top of the cage, eying the proceedings with its bulging eyes and muttering softly. John looked at his pet, then at his daughter as he shook his head. "You need to hold on to my hand. It is a big place and you can easily get lost. Winston! Head or cage." The howler looked at John once he had heard his name and regarded the man for a few seconds, then yawning contently, he lept off the cage, ambled over to John and climbed on his back until he reached John's head. Grasping John's ears with his nimble fingers for hold he squeaked once then sniffed at John's hair before sneezing twice, grasping the hairs on the back of John's head with the fingers on his backpaws. John sighed softly at the misbehavings of the pet then looked over to Inez's mother. "Fran, can you get the cage?" (Reply Fransisca) John waited for the group of the Boudicca to leave before he left the shuttle himself with Inez in tow. As they had left the shuttle, John noticed everybody else standing around, unsure what to do and looked around himself. It was a bit different from last time he had arrived at the Starbase, leading a group of scientists to assist the scientific staff of the starbase. It felt like long time ago, in a different life, really. ~Was it only a few months ago?~ "Daddy! Look! Weird man!" The cry from Inez made him look at her then along her outstretched hand that pointed towards an evac suit against the far side of the bay. Although it was a weird place to place a suit like that, John just shrugged. "That's just a suit, Inez. A special suit that let you walk in space. You remember what the problems with being in space are, right?" Inez thought hard for a few seconds then she nodded quickly. "No air." "No air and?" John asked, which took her another few seconds. "Cold." "Yes, no air and very cold. That suit let's you breathe and keeps the cold away." Inez regarded the suit for a few seconds then shook her head. "Not fit," she was about to state when she suddenly saw the helmet of the suit turn in her direction. Delighted by the sight, she smiled and waved to it vigorously. John picked up the movements and looked at her. "What are you doing?" "Saying hi to mistuh soot man," she explained, which made John look at the suit again, which stood lifeless against the wall, peering into nothingness. John sighed audibly and looked accusingly at Francesca. He considered it her fault, for raising her with stories about elves and imps. Captain Sevant hadn't been much impressed by being called Mistuh Elf man. Or was it Mistuh Fairy man? John looked at the suit again then considered that this WAS in fact an improvement, since this wouldn't create a difficult situation for him. "Yes, right, of course. I'm sure he will be pleased by that. Now hush, Captain Rivers is coming." John nodded at his new CO, his third one in almost as many months. He listened to her as she explained about the temporary quarters and that they were now officially on leave. John snorted softly. Ever since his return from the 'miraculous' planet he had been anything *but* on duty. The counsellor and the CMO had seen to that. John had to admit that it had, actually, done him a lot of good, but at the same time they had kept him from delving into science, the only place that had been his safe-haven. He had lost his feeling for the intuitive reasoning, which he considered himself to be a master at, and he found that without it, it had become harder and harder for him to grasp science. Of course, according to Oggie, his loss of 'fingerspitzengefuehl' was more likely due to the trauma that came from John's death experience. Or due to the fact that now his family was placed in the middle of John's world. A family, that before he had joined his first ship, he hadn't even known that it existed. John shook his head. And even now he was kept away from science again. He suddenly realised that the others were leaving and he looked over at Francesca and nodded to her that it was time for them to go as well. He nudged Inez to move as well and after a look at the 'Kepten' Inez was happy to go as well. She smiled at her then remembering the suit, she turned and waved at the white evac suit. "Goohby, Mistuh soot man!" her clear voice rang out across the room. John looked down at her, then at the suit, then back at his daughter and sighed, before gently nudging her along. As he lead her away the helmet of the suit turned towards them, then after a second turned back to stare into nothingness. (Reply by Francesca, any) (Posted by Adrie Geuken) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - Secondary Shuttlebay - Civilian Francesca dela Rosa - 0906) "Fran, can you get the cage?" Francesca, already laden with their hand-luggage, including Inez's favourite 'Zut-beah' and John's holdall filled with PADDs he had barely looked at since leaving Geneva as well as her own bag, gave John's back a Look. Then after some shuffling of bags from one hand to under her arm, she picked up the cage as well. Truth to tell she was glad to see John taking such an interest in Inez. Although sometime she would have to educate him in the fine art of holding a two-year-old by the hand AND carrying a couple of bags as well. But for now, let them spend time with each other. Inez was certainly happy with the attention he gave her and that made Francesca happy too. The last few weeks, after the Boudicca had met up with the Kitty Hawk, had been very different. Of course John wasn't working, but instead of shutting himself away as he had been used to do, he had seemed to open out to them, particularly Inez. Smiling to herself, Francesca followed John and Inez out of the shuttle when the others had left. Listening to Inez's chatter, and John's replies, her smile broadened as he explained how the evac suit standing across the bay worked. Inez waved happily to it, making John sigh and look accusingly at Francesca, who grinned at him. "She's only two," she whispered to him. "And it looks like a person, from her point of view." "Yes, right, of course," John said to Inez. "I'm sure he will be pleased by that. Now hush, Captain Rivers is coming." Francesca looked curiously at the rather stern-looking woman who was speaking to them. She hadn't seen much of her on the Boudicca, but of course John should know her better, having spent some days in her company on that awful-sounding planet. And she supposed that Captain Rivers must have a reasonable opinion of John to bring him along. Unless of course she'd not been given the choice... Francesca sighed softly. It wasn't easy moving form ship to ship after only a few days or weeks in each place. She hoped this time it would be a longer assignment. And on the plus side it was an explorer which meant families and civilians so she and Inez wouldn't feel so out of place there either. ~Perhaps,~ she thought, ~I could even do some teaching in the school there. After all there's bound to be one.~ Or so she hoped. Suddenly the group began to break up and John was nodding at her to indicate they should leave too. A nudge from John made Inez look at Captain Rivers and give her a smile. Francesca noted that the woman didn't smile back but merely nodded at the child a little awkwardly and she wondered, not for the first time since they'd left the Boudicca, how things were going to turn out. Inez turned and waved to the evac suit as she went. "Goohby, Mistuh soot man!" she called brightly. Francesca smiled at the Captain and shrugged her shoulders slightly, but got no answering smile. If anything, the woman looked puzzled as to why Inez would wave to an evac suit. Hastily Francesca gathered up their belongings and caught up with John. "So is it far to our quarters?" she asked. (Reply by John iyw, any) (Posted by Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - Marine Country, MCO's Office - MCO Drizzt - 0915) Drizzt stepped into the MCO's office and was immediately struck by the dissimilarity shown here, as opposed to most MCO's office's he'd ever seen. This office was nearly empty. There were no insignia, no pictures, no mementos. Just neat stacks of PADDS and a set of armor sitting in one corner. Of course, the reason for that was obvious, if you looked at the man sitting behind the desk. His long pointed ears and green complexion alone should have explained it. You didn't actually have to talk to the man to know he was a Vulcan. And if you did talk to him, well... Drizzt had spent a short time on Geneva before coming to the Boudicca, when she'd been relaunched. Colonel T'Vanek, Major T'Vanek then, was coldly calculating and eminently qualified.. which was why he was also the Sector Commander for the Marines. He was short on fire and brimstone, long on tactics and strategy. The only real surprise to Drizzt was the Colonel was still sitting on Geneva, as opposed to being on the Front or with one of the Expeditionary Forces. "Colonel." Drizzt said, snapping to attention. "Lieutenant Major Drizzt, Commander Boudicca Marine Expeditionary Force to the Champlain." T'Vanek inclined his head slightly. "At ease, Major." he said in the even tones of a man who'd spent his life trying not to get excited. Odd, for a Marine, and something Drizzt just didn't understand. "Welcome to Starbase Geneva, I have already seen to it that your men are billeted. You can speak with the Officer of the Deck for rotations." "Excellent Sir," Drizzt said as he executed a perfect ease to Parade Rest. When a Colonel told you to be 'at ease', they didn't mean you could lounge in their chairs. And when a Vulcan Colonel who was ALSO your Sector Commander told you to be 'at ease', you'd best be minding how you stand at all times. "I had one request for our time here, Colonel, if I might make it?" "You may." was the reply. "I'd like permission to cross train my Marines with yours. We've been in constant combat; I think my troopers could use some brushing up on some of those skills which they're not working out much. We've primarily been in ground combat, strangely enough, we could use some more practice ship-to-ship against Soldiers and Commanders we've not practised against before." A few seconds of silence followed, before T'Vanek said. "A capital idea, Major Drizzt." The Vulcan folded his hands together, "My men will surprise you. Geneva is being used to cycle Marines from the front; seventy-two percent of "Pride and Passion" are now combat veterans." "Excellent, Colonel." Drizzt said, "A busy Marine is a happy Marine." he said, flat faced. He wondered if he shouldn't have said that though, it could easily look like a slap at the Vulcan's cultural heritage and choice of professions. "So I have been given to understand." was the Vulcan's only response. The man stood and crossed his arms behind him. "I have received one more set of orders from our Divisional Commander, and they happen to involve you Major." The colonel stepped around his desk. "The newly revised Chain of Command arrived with sixty four promotions, your name was on the list and your Expeditionary Force was removed from the Chain for extended duty on the Champlain." he pulled a small container out of his pocket and handed it over without any ado. "You are now a Lieutenant Colonel." a few seconds paused, then T'Vanek said- belatedly, "Congratulations." Drizzt's white eyebrows shot up. "Uh." he looked at what he was holding, then opened it up. It was the three stars of a Lieutenant Colonel. "Thank you sir." T'Vanek nodded once, "I will have my XO speak with yours about organizing the training sessions. Today, I believe, would be best for you and yours to rest after your extended journey. Dismissed, Colonel." The new Colonel snapped to attention, then spun and walked out in a bit of a daze. The Vulcan had been brisk, not giving him a whole lot of time to work out the changes which had just hit his world. ~I'm a short Colonel? Why?~ he mused as he stepped out of Marine Command Country. ~No matter, gives me a reason to take the woman out for a steak dinner.~ he thought with a chuckle. ~As if I need a reason to take a pregnant lady out for food.~ (reply: none, yet) (posted by Trout) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - 52nd Fleet HQ Administrative offices, Captain Rivers' Temporary Office - Champlain CO, Captain Susan Rivers - 0930) Having reported in and been given several PADDs to read containing reports of what had happened on the Champlain as well as future orders, Susan inspected the small office she'd been assigned to enable her to deal with ship's business. At least she'd be able to keep it separate from their quarters, something she was grateful for. She smiled wryly to herself. Until recently she wouldn't have cared - would in fact have preferred to have everything in one place. But now she valued the privacy this arrangement gave her. ~I wonder where Lise is~ she thought. Captain Arianna was, she had been informed on enquiry, temporarily on assignment elsewhere. ~It's a pity she's not here, I'd have liked the chance to catch up. I've got so much to tell her!~ She studied the crew list and civilian assignments to the Champlain. One name in particular stood out, almost in letters of fire one might say. ~oh prophets, why, out of all the ambassadors with the 52nd, did they have to appoint *him*?~ By way of displacement activity, she got herself a raktajino from the replicator and sat sipping it whilst she mulled the situation over in her mind. ~I suppose I'd better get this over with~ she decided. She pressed a button on her desk, and a young woman, fresh-faced and looking like she had just come out of the Academy (which, Susan reflected, she probably had), entered the room, PADD in hand. "Yes, Captain?" she said. "I'd like you to take a message for me, Yeoman. To Co- that is, to Ambassador Suentar." It felt odd to Susan having a yeoman at her beck and call. She was used to doing everything for herself. Yeoman Addams settled herself in a chair and sat waiting, stylus poised to take notes. Susan paused a moment to gather her thoughts and began: "Captain Rivers to Ambassador Suentar. I see you are assigned to my new command, USS Champlain, and I would be grateful if you could spare the time to meet with me this afternoon at 1345. Please inform Yeoman Addams, who is temporarily assigned as my assistant, whether this is convenient for you or not. Yours etc.. Captain Susan Rivers, CO, USS Champlain." She waited until the young woman looked up from the PADD, then added, "Copies to my personal files and to the Champlain personnel files, please. I'd also like to be updated on the Champlain's scheduled arrival time, and copies of all the personnel files sent to my personal access. I think that's it for now, I'll get settled into my temporary quarters and return in time for the meeting with the Ambassador. Oh, if the Ambassador requests a different time, please let me know immediately." "Yes, Captain," Addams said, looking up as she finished her notes. "I'll ensure all that is with you as soon as possible." "Thank you," Susan said as she stood up. "Anything else, apart from notifying me of new crew-members wishing to report in, please deflect until after my meeting with Ambassador Suentar, unless it's urgent." (reply none) (posted by Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - Marine Docking Bay, CMO Josh Caskie, - 0932) Once all the marines had disembarked Susan crossed back over the other Boudicca personnel and handed out the assignments for their quarters. Josh smiled since they all seemed to be sharing a coridor. But smile at this time was about as much as she was willing to do. Grinning at John and his family, she sighed. "Please don't take this the wrong way, but I really want to go find my quarters and go take a shower. Sharing a shuttle with 50 odd Marine might well have been necessary, but I have other plans for this evening, and smelling like a marine really doesn't figure in it." Giving them all one last smile she turned back to Susan. I'm off to settle in. Give me a shout if you need me. You woke me up!] Seb's finger stabbed the A key, [Will you check the clock for me?] The A button got pressed down again, Pokemon Silver, not quite an original but near enough for the 15 year old teenage who was obsessed with the 20th century craze. [What time is it?] Seb quickly set the time as he walked over to one of the seated areas on the promenade [What? DAY 9 o'clock?] Seb moved the pointed up to the 'Yes' answer and once again stabbed the A button. [How many minutes?] ~43~ Seb thought to himself, as he pushed the keypadd down to the correct amount [Whoa! 43 min.?] ~yes...~ [DAY 0943! I overslept!] Seb smiled, Professor Oak.. ~oh deary me~ "Olivia!" Seb instantly looked up, ~Come on.. Give me a break~ He knew the voice from a mile off, the winey screechy voice of his younger sister. "What you doing...Olivia?" she said taunting him. "Your not playing on that old thing again..?" She asked and her voice trailed off as she looked at the screen [People call me the POKeMON PROF.] "Sad." She muttered before turning her back on him and walking away, "OH" She said stopping before the corner, "Mum and Dad want to see you, ASAP." She smiled and skipped away. ~Olivia my arse.~ Seb frowned at the back of his sisters head, ~My names NOT Olivia! I am NOT a girl.~ again inside his head, suffice to say he wasnt fond on his sister atall. Seb looked down at his Gameboy Colour and growled, he'd have to start Pokemon Silver (again) another day, [Your very own Pokemon story is about to unfold, You'll face fun and tough challenges. A world of dreams and adventures with Pokemon awaits! Lets go. I'll be seeing you later] ~Yeah see you later Oak~ He thought as he stood up and flipped the switch on the side of the lime green Gameboy and marched back the same way his sister had headed. ~Now what can they want. We moving AGAIN?~ He suggested to himself, he knew it was an all too likely idea. In his life the longest his family had ever stayed anywhere was 8 months. It was coming up to that now for Geneva, he had hoped they would have stayed a little longer. He was just getting used to the back alleys and short-cuts. ~Ah well~ He placed the hand-held console in his back-pack as he walked. The only decent thing (in his view) that his father had ever done, was buy that Gameboy for Seb's sixth birthday and along with it give Seb 'Pokemon Red' the original Nintendo Gameboy Pokemon game. He had completed Pokemon Red within the year and for his next birthday decided he wanted a Nintendo DS Lite, also back from the same era as the Gameboy colour. It had seemed that when Seb and his mother researched into Pokemon it was as popular on Earth as it was in Seb's head. He then began his collection of Pokemon games, not to sell or to keep, but to play on them. It soon became qutie the obsession, his parents didnt mind as they thought it kept him from realised how much they were moving or why his dad just couldnt keep a job down in one place. Seb stepped out of the turbolift and made way to his family's temporary quarters on Geneva. As the door opened his flung his bag on the chair to the right hand side and waltzed in, "Lisa, said you needed to see me." He said to his parents as he grew closer. "Oh we DO" His mother said with a big smile, ~There it is~ and there it was ~The smile.. When should I pack?~ "Sit down, Sebastian" His father said. Seb dumped himself into the nearest chair, now completly uniterested. ~As you know, your father is always trying to further his career...~ he thought to himself, it was the routine speach... His brain seemed to cut itself of from his ears, he wasnt listening... ~Maybe I should teach Arcanine, cut...? No that wouldnt work.~ He thought to himself, he took a glance at his mother so she would think he was actually listening to the speach he had heard so many times. But something was different she hadnt stopped smiling, she usually grew a little bored herself after his father took over the speach. He decided to tune in a little, make sure everything was the same. "...heading a group of engineer's on the USS Champlain..." ~'heading'? How.. he's got no ambition or goal in life, all he wants to do is engineer... He's such a Magikarp and he'll never become a Grydos, so I wish he'd stop getting mums hopes up~ "FOR how long?" Seb finally said. "Er.. How long, what?.. Son?" his father muttered, Seb raised his eyebrow mockingly, his father knew exactly what he meant. "How long until we move of this.. USS Caplain..?.. To a new assignment to further your career..?" "Whenever an opportunity arises you should.." "...Grab it by the horns and pull, Yes so you've said." Seb said, "Ok, When do we leave?" "Few days and its the USS Champlain, she's a galaxy class" his father said, sitting down opposite him looking a little deflated. Seb nodded and stood up, "Congratulations dad" He said patting him on the back as he picked up his bag and headed for his room. New home, new ship, new school... ~Too bad, I was starting to like this one..~ He smiled mischievously and sat on his bed pulling out the Gameboy Colour. Cmdr. Ahmed Ibn Salid - 0946) As Susan was about to head for the door, the chime sounded. She raised an eyebrow at Addams, who shook her head. "I've no idea who it might be, ma'am." "Enter!" Susan said, returning to her desk. "You can go, Yeoman," she added. The door to the small office slid open as Ahmed stepped forward into the room. Captain Rivers was sitting behind a desk and a Yeomen was quickly leaving the room . Ahmed stepped aside so she could get past him to the exit. Once she was gone and the door closed, Ahmed stepped forward stopping just in front of the desk and reported in. "Lieutenant Commander Ahmed Ibn Salid, reporting for duty Ma'am." The words didn't carry the same nervous crispness that they would have a few months earlier. And it was that more relaxed tone, that came with experience that Ahmed had used. "Nice to meet you, Commander," Susan said, looking closely at the man HQ had designated her FO as she stood to shake his hand. He was young, almost heartbreakingly young, but there was a maturity to his expression and his tone that she knew probably came from the kind of experience all too common in this war. "Please, sit down," she added, indicating a chair. "Can I offer you a drink or something?" Ahmed took the proffered seat. He smiled and regarded his new commanding officer for a moment. She was not much older than him, according to her Dossier only six years his elder. She appeared to be in excellent physical shape and had soft green eyes. "No thank you, Captain. I just had a late breakfast before coming here." he replied. He had seen her bio, it was full of outstanding comments and also a few less than sterling ones as well. Ahmed had decided however that the Captain had to be doing something right, otherwise she wouldn't have been promoted to that position again. He paused for a moment, not sure where to take the conversation. Should he start with a more personal discussion and move to the ship or perhaps he should go the other direction and start professional. Susan smiled suddenly. "I see you come to me from the Nimitz," she said. "She's a good ship. She was my first assignment outside the Academy and I also once had the good fortune to command her. And your commanding officer, Captain Sash, appears to think highly of you. I must try to meet him while the Nimitz is here." She sat back and regarded Salid for a moment, then continued, "So, Commander. You are as you know assigned to a ship designated as an explorer. What you probably don't know is that this ship will be required to join in the forthcoming final push. I don't know how long we'll have to train the crew, a few weeks, maybe. So, Commander, are you up for the job?" Salid smiled at the Captain at the mention of the Nimitz. It was a good common thread that they shared. The first ship that either of them had been assigned to out of the academy. "That's a fair question, Captain. And to give you an honest answer. I must say that I'm willing to give it everything I have. I've been able to improve the efficiency of the engineering department on the Nimitz significantly, so some of the same lessons I learned there should help me here. I understand that Training an entire vessel is completely different from do so with a single department. And I also realize that it will be a learning experience for everyone involved." He paused for a moment. "But I feel that my service record bears out that I am both willing and capable of performing my duties in the capacity of First Officer. If you believe otherwise, then I recommend that you speak to Command HQ about getting someone else to serve in that capacity. The ship and her crew come first, before any other considerations. Including that of my own career. That said; I have never served as an executive officer. So I am certain that I will need some guidance from you as well, Ma'am. And if command says we are to fight, then we'll fight." Susan smiled thinly. "I'll be honest with you, Mr Salid. A ship full of officers of whom only two - myself and Lt Colonel Drizzt, the MCO - have seen combat in a fleet battle would not be my first choice to take into a bloodbath such as this will be. But if I didn't think you'd be up to the job either on reading your record or on meeting you, you can be very sure this conversation would terminate pretty quickly and I'd be requesting someone else." She didn't add that her hopes of finding a suitable replacement would be pretty thin. She was reasonably certain that had a more experienced officer been available, she'd have got him or her. But good officers - and especially good command officers - were thin on the ground. At least she had someone with a good, if short, record. "But I have confidence that you and I will forge an effective team to lead the Champlain into battle. I just hope we have the time we need." She opened a drawer and took out a PADD, then handed it to Salid. "This is a timetable of the most essential exercises we will have to run them through, once the ship's repairs are completed and we depart Geneva. As you can see it's pretty tight, but there's a lot to cover. This is not a completely rookie crew: as you'll have seen, they have seen some action. But nothing like the scale on which they are going to see it before too long." She paused, then added, "Frankly, Commander, I don't think any of us have seen anything like it." Ahmed nodded. He reached out and took the proffered PADD. The exercises were clearly detailed. He flipped through the screens quickly, familiarizing himself with the details as he went. "I appreciate your honesty, Captain," he said. "And you'd be wrong not to be concerned about me. I've been out of the academy less than a year and I've been made a first officer. That says volumes about the situation we're facing. I can only promise you I'll give my all. If at any time you think me lacking in that, I encourage you to have me replaced." He motioned to the PADD that he held in his hand. "And judging from these requirements, I'd hope none of us will ever have to see this level of aggression again, Captain. I can only pray that we have the determination to carry this conflict through to conclusion. If not, then we haven't just failed ourselves, but we've failed everyone that we vowed to protect." "And I personally find that completely unacceptable," he added. Susan nodded, but kept to herself the speculation that whatever the result of the battle, they had failed by allowing someone like Doenitz to come to power. "I think - I hope - we all do," she said. "What we have to remember is that on the other side there are also a lot of honourable men and women who sincerely believe the same. Of course there are also a fair number of genuine Doenitz supporters too who have seized the chance to give rein to the darker side of their nature but it wouldn't surprise me too much to learn there were some - a very few - on our side too who actually enjoy the tasks they've had to do." She sighed. "Ultimately we will all do our best to bring this to a close. And a successful one at that. But success will come at a high cost." ~And failure an even higher one.~ Ahmed nodded. He could agree with Captain Rivers's assessment. And he was sure before it was over with he'd be looking into the face of the abyss as well. He just hoped he had the courage to make the right decision, regardless of the consequence. "If you've nothing else, Captain, I'll start reviewing the crew roster and putting together a timetable for the repairs and the training that you mentioned." he said waiting to see if Rivers had more to add. "Nothing else for now, thank you, Commander." Susan stood up and held out her hand. "Welcome aboard, Number One. I hope we will forge as good a relationship as I did with my last FO." Ahmed stood and shook her hand. "Thank you, Ma'am. I'm looking forward to it, Captain." he replied then turned and left the small office. (reply any, none) (Posted by Daniel and Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - Main Promenade - Colonel Spider Drizzt - 1006) "Pfft, thief!" Drizzt said as he put the small pewter mug back on the stand he'd taken it from so fast, it was like he'd been burnt. "Highway robbery!" "Indeed!" the small store keep said, apparently affronted. "This is high quality workmanship, all hand crafted..." "... and then mass replicated from the original." Finished the Andorian. He waved his hand at the storekeeper and moved on, the mug wasn't impressive enough to really barter over. Besides, he wasn't particularly comfortable on the promenade at this moment... two or three Klingon ships were had troops aboard on leave before going to the front, there were a lot of Klingons hanging about the area. He stopped at another of the temporary stalls that lined the Promenade between main shops and looked at the items for sale. He'd been wandering the station quietly for the last couple hours; he still had a couple more until his Marines all geared up for some practice maneuvers. 1200 had been the scheduled hour (but he'd told his Officers and men that it was 1400, he wanted them caught flat footed). Since Susan had gone off to do her official duties, he'd had plenty of time to kill. A few of his Marines had the same idea; he'd seen the occasional face here and there that he recognized. Being on Geneva was an unexpected treat; none of them had expected to see anything but the front lines for the next year. In fact, he could see four of his own standing outside a Bar just down the lane from where he was standing. They kept fading in and out of his vision, there were a LOT of people on the Promenade, most of them large Klingons. But each time they appeared, they appeared not to have moved. ~Probably enjoying the last taste of liberty and real ale they'll get for a while.~ he thought as he picked up a small carving of some sort of Deity and looked at it. It looked almost human, with a huge round belly and some funny head-dress. He was just putting it back when the sound of raised voices reached his ears. He quirked his antenna and turned his head, scanning for the source. Moments later, he groaned audibly and started pushing his way through the crowd. A small ring of onlookers had formed by the time he'd shoved his way into the area, and already the situation looked bad. Several Klingons had formed around his Marines, and the yelling that was going back and forth was getting more and more heated. "I don't care what you think, ugly, we have the right to stand here!" "You will move on!" came a bellowing Klingon voice. Drizzt paused for a moment, and then worked his way around the edge of the Klingons, watching them the entire time. Once around, he finally got a good look at the four Marines... they were from Freedom and Pride, a squad known for their bravado. They were not, typically, trouble-makers- though. "Alright, that's enough!" Drizzt snapped. "What the blue hell is going on here?" "A disagreement about loitering rights, Sir." Growled Jorge, the most senior of the Marines present in the little group. All four had a small mug of -something- in their hands, and they were standing outside of a bar. But none of the four appeared intoxicated. If they were, Drizzt would have their heads on a pole later. "This is OUR area today, human." came the bass rumble of a Klingon voice. "We won't share it with cowards who run from the front line for some weak beer!" "There lies the crux of our problem Colonel Drizzt," said the youngest of the Marines quietly. Drizzt looked at the Klingons for a few moments, all of whom seemed primed for a fight, then turned his head slightly to the Marines. "Report back to barracks." He ordered. One of the Klingons let rip a belly roll, as the crowd continued to build around them. "Yes, blue man, let your tame women run back to hide under their covers!" Belly-roll continued to laugh while one of the other Klingons spoke something sharp to his comrades in Klingon. Drizzt couldn't understand the language, but it didn't sound particularly friendly. The last Marine was nearly past, with Drizzt in the rear, when Drizzt heard... a sound. It wasn't loud; it probably wouldn't have been audible to someone with poor hearing: say, a human. It was an insult, from one of his Marines, which suggested rude things about the Klingon's heritage and breeding. It wasn't meant to be heard, but Drizzt heard it clearly. ... and so did the Klingons, at least one of them. The nearest Klingon, the belly-roller, roared and grabbed the Marine who had dared utter the insult. "Now you DIE!" he bellowed before head-butting the much smaller human. It was no contest, the Marine dropped to the floor like a sack of rotten potatoes. Drizzt didn't even have the time to utter a mental sigh. The Marines were suddenly all under attack by a horde of enraged Klingon soldiers. Drizzt was beset by one immediately, before he could even think to say anything that might calm them (not that he could have, no good words had immediately come to mind anyway). He ducked and struck with every ounce of strength he had at the larger creature's crotch, while bracing himself the best he could. The Klingon's battle-roar became a screech of pain, and his inertia tipped him forward and over the Andorian. The attacking Klingon ended up in a pile on the opposite side of Drizzt, babbling and holding his injured self. Not that he wasn't still dangerous, of course, he WAS a Klingon. Drizzt spun and struck the side of the Klingon's head hard to keep him knocked out, then spun back to his feet again. One more of his Marines had gone down, the other two were being beaten liberally. Drizzt growled and pulled his side-arm, he didn't have the time OR the patience for this. He brought it up and fired, hitting one of the Klingons on the back of the neck at high stun, the brute dropped to his knees. Before Drizzt could fire again, however, someone barreled into him at high speed and sent him sprawling. Drizzt barely got a glimpse of the perpetrator, but he was positive that the being had NOT been a Klingon. He landed hard and rolled, coming to his feet in a fighting stance immediately. Another Klingon, not one from the original attackers, took a swing at him. He ducked, and then smoothly jump kicked the Klingon in the face. Another attacker joined the briefly stunned Klingon, lashing out with a foot that just barely missed Drizzt's stomach. Bar-room brawling wasn't the reason that Drizzt had earned the name 'Spider', but it might as well have been. He twisted and turned, using every dirty trick he'd ever learned to keep the Klingon and... whatever the other creature was (it looked like a dirty pancake with legs) from crippling him. All around, more and more people were jumping into what had turned into a riot. Geneva Security was there, firing phasers randomly and screaming for the crowd to get back under control. They weren't having all that much success though, Drizzt thought, as he watched one of them heaved up and body-slammed by yet another visiting Klingon. The Andorian's antenna twitched as he jumped forward and scored a good hit on one of his attackers, before jumping back into a defensive pattern. ~Some help would be nice.~ he thought, desperately fighting to find enough time to tap his badge and declare a security emergency. She gazed around, not really wanting to do much. She knew she had a lot of reading to do but, to be honest she simply wasn't in the mood. Josh realised that this was the first time she had ever not wanted to sit down and get on with her work, and to be honest that worried her, so crossing over to the replicator she asked for her usual cup of Lapsang Souchong, and taking it back to the chair she sat down and thought about it for a while. Finally, she realised that what she really wanted to do was spend some time by herself. The last few weeks on the Boudicca had been hard and the staff that had been reasigned to the Champlain had been given very little time to organise the transfer over to the new ship. Crossing over to the computer she checked out where the holodecks on the station were and finding out that at least one of them was free at present she booked it for the next hour. Rummanging around in her bag she picked out her favourite holodeck program and headed off. Inserting her chip she instructed the computer to run her program and open the door. As the doors opened Josh stepped across the threshold and took a deep breath breathing in the salt tang that hit her. She gazed around the cresent of sand in front of her and smiled as she saw the little boat tied up at the end of the short pier. Unzipping her boots she dropped them where she stood and walked forward enjoying the feel of the sand beneath her feet. Padding up the steps and along the pier she untied the aft mooring rope and coiling it on the deck jumped onboard and headed to the front of the boat and untied the forward one. Checking the wind, she removed the cover from the mailsail and hoisted it into place. As the wind caught it and it swung to one side Josh dived for the helm and turning the boat into the wind sighed as it dipped it's bow, leapt once and finally began to move away from the pier in it's slow stately dance. As the boat finally headed away from land Josh sighed in relief and revelled in the sense of freedom that sailing always gave her. She adjusted her course a couple of points to port and headed the boat out towards the open ocean, but before she reached the opening that the natural harbour provided she swung the helm around again and with one hand on the helm and the other on the boom she began tacking back and forward in the harbour simply revelling in the freedom she felt. So he decided to spend his time trying to find something for his brother. He was not good at getting presents but his sister had given him a suggestion. Now he wanted to find his mates and grab a drink. "Now you DIE!" Smith spun round he saw at the far end of the promenade group of Klingons attacking a group of marines. ~Looks like some having a interesting time~ He headed towards the group at a run. He saw one of the marines drop to the floor. ~Oww that’s going to hurt in the morning~ As he through his Padd as the closest Klingon. It bounced of his head and he spun round snarling. Smith lashed out with his fist. It connected with the Klingon’s jaw and here was a crunch as his jaw snapped. He slammed his elbow into the Klingon’s head and stepped past as the Klingon slumped to the ground. He saw the Colonel fighting with some marines in the midst of the brawl. ~Must get to the Colonel~ He saw a Klingon aiming a phaser at the Colonel’s back. He was to far away to get the Colonel. So Smith made a split decision and launched himself into the air. His gripped the Klingon’s arm and pulled it up as the shot went wide. As he came down he pulled the Klingon to of him. He could feel the hot angry breath of the Klingon. He slammed fist into the Klingon’s face. He realised back in pain as his nose exploded with blood. With a snarled the Klingon raised his fist to turn his face into pulp. ~This is going to hurt~ Smith steeled his self for what he was about to receive. He wandered around, inspecting the rooms whilst she unpacked what they'd need for the next few days. Most of her possessions were still in boxes in temporary storage but she had kept some necessities in her personal luggage. She also intended to go shopping - it was a long time since she'd had the chance to do so and she was looking forward to it. If she remembered rightly there had been some interesting shops here on Geneva that she fully intended to pay a visit to. She'd be needing some new clothes soon, and she also intended to take Josh up on her offer of showing Susan where she could get a decent pair of boots too. For now, though, she felt a bit tired and she sat down with a coffee and a sandwich. She kicked off her boots and put her feet up on the coffee table, enjoying the space available after the cramped conditions on the Stallion and planning what she was going to buy ~Definitely a nice dress or two, and maybe some new shoes. And perhaps -~ Pangur interrupted her thoughts noisily. He had finished his tour of inspection and now wanted food. "No peace for the wicked," she scolded him gently, but shared a little of the meat out of her sandwich. He accepted the tid-bit daintily and, when he had eaten it, sat beside her hoping for more, watching her closely so he could tell the moment she looked like she was about to stand up. (reply those from the Boudicca, those meeting us at Geneva, Suentar, any) (Posted by Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva, Deck 118, Biochemistry Labs - Science Officer Lieutenant (jg) Megan Tallos - 1031) Megan hummed along to the music, it obscured all the noise in the room to the point where basically the only person who was going to be able to hear her was the computer. The music was basically the Andorian equivalent of Mozart and Haydn. Megan had come to conclude through studies of their language, and now listening to their music, Andorian's could be quite romantic when they wanted to be. Pulling on the gloves over her small hands, she quickly went back to work, humming, and sometimes singing along softly in Andorian. She slid the chip into the microscope, a name that seemed to have stuck with the machine, even though they had long since moved past the micro level, in fact it was the nano level she planned to use. Humming as she turned on the machine, she brushed her bangs out of her face with out thinking about it, and continued on. She let the microscope work for a few moment before bringing the image up on one of the wall screens. Quickly she tapped the controls on her PADD and watched the virus she was studying rotate slowly around it's vertical access. She knew before she even ran the analysis that it had mutated again. She had been studying this virus for the last two years in hopes of finding a cure. The virus, centarovirus 7 Beta 5, was originally from a Tellarite Colony world, it wasn't very harmful or unique. At least that was the case until it somehow managed to hybridize with a Trill retrovirus, at which point it became highly deadly. There were many people in the research community trying to figure the virus out. It mutated at such a rapid rate, creating vaccine was nearly impossible, and it usually worked faster than the body could fight back. Megan had managed to produce a neutered version of the virus for her to do research on. Only able to become virulent in the presence of a small molecule produced by Horta, and as Horta's being silicon based life forms were one of the few species naturally immune to the virus, her research strain would never be able function outside of a petri dish. Still she continued to use force fields and high level sterilization procedures. [Virulence Analysis Complete, infection rate increased twenty fold, mutation rate 5%] Megan threw her PADD, bouncing it off the force field surrounding the hood, and watching it clatter to the floor. She swore in an interesting mix of Romulan, Tellerite and ancient Greek. No matter how hard she, or for that matter any other researcher tried they just couldn't get a handle on the virus. While it had started out as deadly only to Tellarites, it was still able to infect other species. In it's original state it shouldn't have been any more harmful than the common cold. However it then mutated, although she was convinced that mutation wasn't the correct word for what it was doing, it somehow managed to delete and subtract whole exons worth of DNA, allowing it to quickly adapt to it's new host. Each virus when taken as a single unit was only deadly to a specific species, the one is had last infected. However, it remained infectious at some minor level to most Humanoids and after two or three reproductive cycles, adapted to it's new host, becoming deadly to them and reverting to barely infectious to it's old host. The only method of treatment and containment hey had managed to devise was immediate quarantine of suspected contacts, and treatment with wide band anti-virals, and protease inhibitors, and plasmapheresis to try and reduce the viral load to allow the body a chance to fight back. Still the Mortality rate was too high for anyone's liking. Her current experiments centered around trying to reduce the mutation rate and allow the body more time to fight back. Most of the researchers working on the virus, nicknamed Hydra, had decided that prevention of the disease mutation was the only way to fight it with current medical technology. Still she was having no luck, and with the war on, was reaching a point of giving up until she was no long cut off from other researchers. Megan had been waylaid on Geneva for just shy of three months, the USS Argosy had dropped her off during it's last crew shuffle, and due to a front line ship not necessarily needing a Molecular biologist, she had stayed on the Geneva. It had taken her only a week to snag lab space on the station, and she had quickly set up shop. She didn't really know anyone, and decided she needed something to keep herself busy, and off of any of the Brass's bad list. "Computer reduce music volume to one tenth it's current level, and proceed with sterylization procedures for hood Alpha 10, Authorization code Tallos-Pi-6-6-7-Omega." Megan said, stooping over to pick up the fallen PADD. The music quickly dropped to a background volume and the hood sealed and began it's cleaning process. Putting the PADD in the pocket of her lab coat, she walked over to the nearest computer terminal and sat down. She quickly ran her hand through her hair and removed the elastic, letting it fall down her back. Quickly she typed up the report on the experiment, then shut the lab down, finally turning off the music and walked out of the room. He stood up and stretched considering the sheer volume of training and how it could be done in the relatively short time span that he had been given. Without combining it with other training to run concurrently, the majority of the crew would have to put in a solid 34 hour work day for at least three solid weeks. Besides the fact that there weren't that man hours in a day, he couldn't expect anyone to work around the clock. He could already tell, that he'd have to juggle every resource and available space he had available to meet the deadlines. Should I have her report back later? =/\= "No, that's fine. I was about to come back anyway," Susan replied. "I'll be there in about ten minutes," she added, remembering how far she had to travel back to her office. (reply none) (posted by Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - 52nd Fleet HQ Administrative offices, Captain Rivers' Temporary Office - CO Captain Susan Rivers - 1311) As Susan walked into the outer office, a thin, pale-skinned, brown-haired woman stood up and snapped to attention then held out a PADD to the Captain. "Lieutenant Megan Tallos, reporting in as ordered, Sir." Susan took the PADD with a curt nod. "In my office, Lieutenant," she said, leading the way. As the door closed behind them, she added, "Take a seat, Ms Tallos," before walking around the desk to her own chair. She looked through the PADD, a small frown creasing her forehead. Finally she looked up, her face clearing. "You're a very accomplished scientist, Lieutenant. And a very accomplished linguist too. I see you are currently engaged in some research here on Geneva. Will you be wanting to bring that aboard the ship?" (Reply Tallos) (Posted by Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - 52nd Fleet HQ Administrative offices, Captain Rivers' Temporary Office - Science Officer, Lieutenant (jg) Megan Tallos, CO Captain Susan Rivers - 1312) "You're a very accomplished scientist, Lieutenant. And a very accomplished linguist too. I see you are currently engaged in some research here on Geneva. Will you be wanting to bring that aboard the ship?" "I would, Sir, the research is quite vital to finding a cure to the disease. As you can see from my notes, the strain of virus I use has been rendered completely harmless, and I operate under level 4 biosecurity protocols, it wouldn't be a risk to anyone. The Champlain is fully equipped to handle my research." Megan said silently praying to about two dozen deities, of various faiths and pantheons, that the Captain would kill her research. Susan sighed inwardly. At least this one wasn't a Vulcan. Or think herself a god. ~well no more than any other scientist!~ "In that case, if you can assure me there is no risk of biohazard, then I see no problem. Your research will of course have to be secured away should the ship go into action," she said. "And doubtless we'll have use for your linguistic abilities too. You will also, over the next few weeks, be taking part in some simulations with the rest of the crew, though as a scientist your part will be limited to protecting yourself and your assistants in case of boarding, and general safety protocols during battle." Megan sighed, "Trust me Sir, everything will be kept will secured, with the permission of the Chief Science officer I was planning on using the secure science lab anyway." Megan said, feeling much better that her research was now safe. "As for my linguistic abilities, it's more a hobby than a profession, the universal translator is usually faster than I am, so long as it is working." Megan said, then in a quiet voice, "I think you might be surprised at just how dangerous a science lab can be to the uninvited, although security officers are nice too." Susan shook her head. "Trust me, I wouldn't. I've seen what an apparently unarmed scientist can do," she said soberly. "Even to a marine in BDU." "Sir, when does the Champlain dock, and do you have any orders for me prior to that?" Megan asked, hoping she could just keep working on her research, she was also working on learning Bolian but she tended to do that in her spare time. "She's expected to dock in three days' time. But she will be laid up for repairs so we won't be moving out straight away. There will also be a memorial service for Captain Wolfe, and some shore leave. So you may occupy yourself as you wish until the ship arrives; there will be some staff meetings and so on to attend after that but you'll be notified about anything you need to attend. In the meantime if anything urgent comes up I will let you know but for now, consider yourself on leave, Lieutenant. Do you have any other questions?" "None that I can think of, sir," Megan said. Megan stood up and snapped to attention, "Good afternoon, Sir, if I can be of assistance prior to the Champlain's arrival, please let me know," Megan said, then turned to leave. (Reply Rivers, Any) (Posted by Patrick D. and Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - Corridor - Ensign (j.g.) Serixs Ssarumon - 13:30) The large creature lumbered his way through the corridors of the starbase, corridors he had walked through numerous times before. He was the only representative of this species on board, and it showed. People tended to give him a wide berth. Serixs was not surprised. He was, after all, a Gorn, standing over eight feet tall, covered in scales, and with very sharp teeth and claws. He understood why people tended to shy away from him. That did not mean he had to like it. People tended to assume he was unintelligent or slow simply because of his reptilian nature and slower manner at which he spoke. Most never realize that he was an accomplished scientist with two PhDs under his belt. He had gone to take care of some personal business and got leave from the USS Spectre to handle it. When he returned, he thought he would be returning to his old posting in the Science Department of the little ship. He was wrong. Waiting for him on his return was a set of orders to a vessel called Champlain and instructions to wait until the bigger ship arrived. They had placed him on permissive leave for that, be the one thing Serixs hated was sitting idle. He had volunteered where he could, assisting in the science labs on the Station, helping in Engineering, or just moving heavy things for people that could not move them. He certainly did not mind menial tasks. It allowed him to put his brain on other matters. Serixs had been here for nearly a month and had been checking almost daily for news on the Champlain and his new CO, a one Captain Susan Rivers. It was this morning when he found out that she had arrived on station, but he did not know when she had gotten there. Still, he needed to check in. Serixs wondered how she would react to him. It was his unofficial way of telling if there would be problems in the future with another officer. If they floundered, stammered, or turned white as a sheet in his presence, then he knew there was going to be trouble. If they stood their ground and stared him down, then that meant there would be no trouble at all. Serixs rounded one more corner and made his way into the administrative office complex, hunting up the Captain's temporary office. Located it was fairly easy, so he stood ramrod straight and keyed the door chime, awaiting the order to enter. (reply Rivers) Serixs stepped in, making sure not to get his tail caught in the door. That would have been an embarrassment. He stood in front of her desk and looked at her. "Sir, Ensign Ssarumon reporting as ordered," he said, then presented her with a copy of his orders to her command. She did not seem imposing, at least not in a physical sense, but there was something about her...perhaps the look in her eyes or the way she moved, that told Serixs that this one was dangerous, and highly intelligent on top of it. (reply Rivers) " I am to be assigned to your Science Department, sir," he said, tapping his sharp toe talons on the deck as he spoke. "I expected to be returning to the Spectre, but it would seem that fleet has need for me elsewhere." NRPG: Will stop here so Liz can add stuff in and let me get a feel for her character. ;) (reply Rivers) (posted by Don Jones) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - 52nd Fleet HQ Administrative offices, Captain Rivers' Temporary Office - CO Captain Susan Rivers - 1331) As the doorchime sounded Susan looked up from the PADD she had been attempting to read, although her mind was largely on the upcoming meeting with Suentar, her former FO now assigned to the Champlain as an Ambassador. If she didn't know better, she would have thought it was someone's idea of a joke to assing him to her ship, but HQ didn't go in for jokes. She frowned, not having expected Suentar to be early. "Enter," she said. To her surprise, a large Gorn stepped in, then walked over to her desk and looked at her. Susan raised an eyebrow interrogatively. It could only be one person, but she hadn't expected him quite so soon, nor unannounced. "Sir, Ensign Ssarumon reporting as ordered," he said, then presented her with a PADD. "Thank you, Ensign," Susan said as she took it and keyed it on. "I am to be assigned to your Science Department, sir," he said, his toe talons making a clicking noise on the deck. "I expected to be returning to the Spectre, but it would seem that fleet has need for me elsewhere." Susan nodded. "That is the case for all of us," she said. "At the moment we all have to go where we are most needed. Do sit down," she added, not so much as an afterthought but wondering if he would do so. His was a tall and imposing figure, but anyone who had served with Commander Zzt would be used to being dwarfed. Zzt tended to sit on the floor; at all but ten feet tall, most chairs were unsuitable for him. Ssarumon, whilst not so tall at eight feet, had his tail to cope with as well. (reply Serixs iyw) She continued to read the PADD, and finally looked up to meet the blue eyes of her new Science Officer. "You have a very impressive career, Ensign Ssarumon," she said. "And an impressive range of skills." She regarded him shrewdly for a moment, then continued, "I gather you have been kept kicking your heels at Geneva for a while now, waiting for me to arrive. And now I have, you still have to wait for the ship to arrive. I've had quite a few reports of your helpfulness on the station," Susan smiled suddenly. "It's a while since I was here but I still have... contacts. So, although you are officially still on leave, feel free to contact Lieutenant Megan Tallos and Ensign John Linskens, both of whom will be working with you on the Champlain. Ensign Linskens travelled with me from the Boudicca, but Lieutenant Tallos has been stationed here on Geneva for a while. I know she is working on some research at the moment and perhaps she can has something that will interest you more than heaving boxes and crates around probably does. In any case since you'll all be working together it would be a good idea to take this opportunity to get to know one another." (Reply Ssarumon) (Posted by Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - 52nd Fleet HQ Administrative offices, Captain Rivers' Temporary Office - Ensign (j.g.) Serixs Ssarumon - 1332) Once invited to sit, Serixs turned the chair around. It was much easier to sit in a chair backwards, considering the trouble his tail had given him. Granted not all Gorn had the appendage, but was one of the unlucky ones that did. Still, it did help him in more situations than it hindered him. He settled into the chair, letting his tail hang off to the floor and eyeing his new Captain suspiciously. "You have a very impressive career, Ensign Ssarumon," she said. "And an impressive range of skills." She regarded him shrewdly for a moment, then continued, "I gather you have been kept kicking your heels at Geneva for a while now, waiting for me to arrive. "I just wish to help where I can. Mostly, I have been assisting with moving equipment and conducting maintenance around the Starbase." She listened as the Captain gave him the names of who he assumed would be his coworkers on the Champlain, so he made it a point to meet with all of them at the earliest possible time. It would be good to get a gameplan together before the ship arrived. "I do need to inform you, Captain, that I have been conducting experiments of a sensitive nature." He said with a smiled. "I will submit the summaries to you for review. Once the Champlain has arrived, I will move it into one of the secure laboratories to limit access." (reply Rivers) "Speaking of which, sir, what has occured that is causing such a crew upheaval on the Champlain?" Serixs asked. He knew that crew rotations were standard fair, but never quite THIS much. "This is most abnormal and troubling." (reply Rivers IYW) "I see," Serixs said, rubbing his chin and then looked at her again before standing back to his full height. "I should let you return to your duties." He bowed his large saurian head down out of courtesy. "It has been a pleasure to meet you." (reply Rivers) Serixs nodded once and made his way from her office. All in all, this Captain Rivers impressed him. She was small and fragile, like most of the mammals he had met, but she had a certain fire to her that was unmistakable, and rather welcoming. He pondered on that while he made his way to the Turbolift, but let his thoughts dwell towards the names the Captain had given him. He needed to meet with his co-workers as soon as he could. He just hoped none of them were allergic to reptiles. (reply Any) (posted by Don) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - 52nd Fleet HQ Administrative offices, Captain Rivers' Temporary Office - CO Captain Susan Rivers - 1334) "I do need to inform you, Captain, that I have been conducting experiments of a sensitive nature." Ssarumon said with a smile, which lit up his expression as well as exposing a lot of very pointed teeth. "I will submit the summaries to you for review. Once the Champlain has arrived, I will move it into one of the secure laboratories to limit access." "I'm sure that will be fine," Susan said, curious as to what the 'sensitive' experiements might be. "However you should be aware that at the moment there is no overall CSO on the Champlain at the moment. I'll be reviewing that situation but until such time as one is appointed I expect all my science officers to work together to ensure the efficiency of the department." "Speaking of which, sir, what has occured that is causing such a crew upheaval on the Champlain?" Ssarumon asked. "This is most abnormal and troubling." Susan nodded. "I agree. However, the Champlain was attacked by one of Doenitz's ships who go tthe jump on them, and they unfortunately lost several senior officers in the first hit - the CO, the CSO and the CMO, amongst others. The FO was also very badly injured, as was the Counsellor, although I believe he at least is making a recovery thanks to the remaining medical staff. The ship is being brought home by the 3O. She'll need some repairs carried out before we can leave. But that's the reason so many new crew are being cycled to the ship at once. I personally requested an expanded science department as well as a contingency of marines. So," she added with a smile, "I guess you can partly blame me for your transfer." "I see," Serixs said, rubbing his chin and then looked at her again before standing back to his full height. "I should let you return to your duties." He bowed his large saurian head down out of courtesy. "It has been a pleasure to meet you." "It's been a pleasure to meet you too," Susan replied, inclining her own head courteously. "I've not had the pleasure of serving with a Gorn before and I'm very glad to have you aboard. Welcome to the Champlain, Ensign Ssarumon," she finished, smiling at the Science officer. Serixs nodded once and made his way from her office. Susan sat for a moment, re-reading his PADD. ~I think he's going to be a big asset~ she thought, pleased. Then she remembered who was coming in next, and sighed.
