Atttenshon!" Drizzt watched his Marines come to attention, but didn't so much as acknowledge that they had done so. Why should they be praised for doing their duty? He crossed his arms behind his back and walked to the end of the line before turning on his heel and coming face to face with the end-most Marine on the right side. Drizzt's antenna twitched slightly, but the Marine in question never so much as moved his eyeballs, He'd been trained well. Leonal had had a year as the Chief of training for the Boudicca Marines to ensure his crew was well disciplined: Disciplined enough to eat nails on command if it would hurt the enemy and protect those they'd sworn to protect, anyway. "I've gotten word from on high," he said as he turned his head to look down the line without moving his body. "There will be no courts martial, there will be no inquiry into the... spirited exchange of culture... we had earlier on the promenade." He looked back at the Marine he was standing before, then turned and began walking down the line. As he passed each Marine, he would pause and look in their direction. As he did so, he continued his speech. "However, there is a price-tag attached. Any man that feels he is to badly beaten to take part in our exertions later this afternoon... will be placed on the sick list until recovered, and then will stand before the Captain's Mast." Drizzt let a beatific smile cover his face, one that conveyed perfect happiness in an exaggerated manner. "That's the order from our new First Officer on the Champlain. I can tell you already that the man is a Saint and very nearly worth being worshiped. Me and him, we both agree on how to run a tight unit: Hard Work. Hard Play. Personal Responsibility. Each in equal measure makes for happy and virile Marines. We've had our fun for the day, now we've work to do..." He stopped at the other end, turned, and stood face-to-face with the Marine on THAT end. "So, is there anybody who opts for a stop to sickbay and a slot on the sick list? If so, step forward now." His right antenna twitched, turning to point down the line, so that anyone who stepped forward would be noticed without him having to take his eyes off the Marine before him. (reply: any) "Mmm hmm." He said, as if that was expected. He took two steps back, "Very well then. Nothing more will be said, we didn't start this scrape. And you might have noticed I was pulled in as well. At least none of you disgraced the name of the Boudicca or the Corps. For that, I'd have had my pound of flesh... and I can guarantee that pound would have been out of the tender part of your butts." Drizzt paused a moment, then nodded. "Get cleaned up, practice at previously scheduled time. Marines, dis-missed!" (reply: any) (posted by Trout) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva -Deck 113, Science Lounge -- Science Officer Lieutenant (jg) Megan Tallos- 1353) Ahmed smiled at her. "I can understand that Lieutenant. I hope at some point your planning on enjoying some R&R time while we're here?" "I'll see what my research will let me manage, Sir," Megan said, not really knowing what to do with time off lately, she supposed she might be able to work on the Bolian language a little more. There was a long pause before the Gorn broke the silence. "What can we help you with, sir?" The large Gorn asked finally, observing the Commander. "Well, I just received a report indicating that you were both involved in some special ongoing research. I'd of course love to help get you settled on the ship with adequate space, equipment and personnel, but before I can do that I need to know about your research. What it entails, how hazardous it could be, and an assessment of what resources and personnel you believe you'll need to continue your research." "Do either of you have that information available for me?" "Yes, sir," Serixs said, handing him the PADD he was working on with the data he had gathered on the aerodynamic profile he was given to analyze. "I was just about to show the work to Lieutenant Tallos, if you would care to come along?" Megan just nodded to the very large lizard, still interested in seeing the research. "Very intriguing work Ensign," he said nodding his head, very impressive. And yes, I'd like to see more of your research." He turned to Tallos. "And of course, yours as well Lieutenant. " Megan had taken the time while the Commander had looked over Ssarumon's research to compile a list of supplies, dangers, and other needed information, and quickly handed over the PADD to the commander. "While there is little risk of a pathogen contamination, I do use level four biosecurity protocols. I know that Galaxy class ships are equipped with secure labs, so if I could have access to one of those I would be grateful, Sir." Megan said. "As for actually seeing my research, I can't say as there is much to observe outside of holographic display of the virus's infection cycle, and a couple of other presentation based material. The PADD contains recent papers of mine on the virus, as well as more recent data and observations from newer experiments, I'd be happy to go over them with you if you want," Megan said with a small smile. (Reply Ssarumon, Salid) (Posted by Patrick D.) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva -Deck 113, Science Lounge -- FO- Lt. Cmdr. "Interesting the mechanism that this virus uses to reproduce. How does it force such an evolutionary state change upon itself in an amazingly short period of time doctor?" he asked as he handed the PADD back to her as well. "I'm curious to know if the outer protein coat also changes their enzyme receptors as quickly to assist them in invading the host cells? And does the bulk of the mutation takes place in the Mitochondrial structures of the host cell as well? Or does it mutate in some fashion between cellular invasions? And how the telomeres avoid degrading at such a rapid pace?" He asked. His studies of ancient Medicine and Virology at Cairo University coming to the forefront. His additional training as a trauma and viral medical technician at Starfleet medical also equipped him to pose such questions and hopefully to understand the answers. (reply Tallos) "Why don't we discuss this in more detail as we move to Ensign Ssarumon's laboratory." he suggested. He turned to SSarumon. "Please Doctor, lead the way if you would be so kind?" (reply Ssarumon, Tallos) (posted by Daniel Greene) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva -Deck 113, Science Lounge -- Ensign (j.g.) Serixs Ssarumon - 1359) Ssarumon remained quiet during the exchange on virology. It was simply too far out of this league to be able to offer anything worthwhile. Had they been discussing stellar phenomena or Quantum physics, then he could offer his insight. As it was, though, it was more prudent for him to keep his sizable yap shut until they finished. "Why don't we discuss this in more detail as we move to Ensign Ssarumon's laboratory." he suggested. He turned to SSarumon. "Please Doctor, lead the way if you would be so kind?" "Of course," Serixs said, stepping out into the corridors on the way to the science lab. As they walked, he looked at Tallos. "What sort of Virus is this?" he asked. "I have never heard of one that could mutate itself so readily to a host and adapt that quickly." (reply any) "I see," he said. "Most peculiar indeed." He gave it some thought, then looked at the two again. "Would it be possible for either of you to take a look at a few things for me?" He asked. (reply any) Serixs gave it some thought. He really should not be doing this, as he was told not to reveal weaknesses in the Hegemony to anyone, but at this point, the Gorn Doctors were not having any luck. "There is a disease spreading amongst my people," he said. "We are not quite sure what it is, but it is deadly," he added, looking decidedly uncomfortably at the prospect. "Mostly in the outlying territories, but it is making its way coreward, despite quarantine efforts." He looked at the two. "It is not harmful to mammals, but reptilians, such as myself, are in dire straights over it." (reply any) "I am not quite sure," he said, "but from what I know, it directly attacks the Gorn's ability to regenerate damage, such as a lost limb or other injury. It causes tumors and cancerous growths to form instead, ones highly resistant to treatment." He looked at the two. "I would not ask, except that it is quickly getting beyond control and Gorn doctors are nowhere near having a treatment for it, both because it is highly unorthodox and because resources are spread so very thin." (reply any) "Thank you," he said finally. "That means much to me." He kept quiet now, letting the two discuss further their work. (reply any) After a few moments, he arrived at the Science lab, ushering the two into it. "And here we are," he said. It would seem he had both computer simulations running and physical models of various types. (reply any) "I prefer to do things the old fashioned way," Serixs said with a smile as he stroked his claws over a physical model of a Galaxy class vessel. He tapped his clawtip on it. "Take this for instance." "Galaxy class," he said "Very beautiful and majestic, A large and powerful ship." He then pulled up the simulation data on it and handed it to Salid. "It has the aerodynamic properties of a dead dog," he added flatly. (reply any) "In an atmosphere, the wind shear would tear the vessel apart. On the Champlain, the issue is compounded with the addition of a third nacelle, so she could never effectively operate within an atmosphere. The SIF would have to work overtime." "It is the same with the Intrepid class," Serixs continued, "though to a smaller degree. The ship can land, and take off, but maneuverability is severely hindered." (reply any) "I have not been told what the end goal is, only that this data is highly important," Serixs responded. "I have been compiling data from ancient Earth planes as well as flight recorder data salvaged from the Enterprise-D and Voyager. All to create a layered Structural Integrity Field that will allow air to pass over and through it to exponentially increase maneuverability at a fraction of the power cost." He pulled up the simulation on a large monitor, showing a mock-up hull and two white lines surrounding it to represent the field. "As you can see here, you have the first layer holding the ship together and provided channels to direct airflow between it and the second layer. This creates a sort of thrust effect and generates lift. The outer layer is what creates the aerodynamic profile and creates better maneuverability, while negating wind shear forces." (reply any) "This could be applied to nearly any ship to help improve maneuverability, but the benefit would be negligible just yet unless the hull was more aerodynamic in shape to begin with. An alteration to nacelle pylons for instance to make them more like wings. I was about to run another simulation using an altered Sovereign class model in the wind tunnel if you would like to watch." (reply any) (posted by Don Jones) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva -Deck 113, Science Lounge - Science Officer Lieutenant (jg) Megan Tallos - 1400) "While there is little risk of a pathogen contamination, I do use level four biosecurity protocols. And how the telomeres avoid degrading at such a rapid pace?" "That's the problem, no one is quite sure how it is adding and subtracting whole genes from it's genome, none of our experiments have been able to block it's acquiring the new genes, that are responsible for producing the spike proteins on the protein coat of the virus. We've eliminated the Mitochondial DNA from the possible acquisition points, and it looks like the actual mutation is taking place while the Virus's DNA is integrated with the host genome." Megan said, flipping through some images on her PADD. As for the Telomeres, the virus itself integrates into the middle of the host genome, and is an RNA virus, which means it doesn't actually have Telomeres to worry about, however the cells it does invade, it activates native telomerase as well as adding a copy of it's own to the host genome to ensure host cell immortality. It's rather annoying to tell the truth. "I have never heard of one that could mutate itself so readily to a host and adapt that quickly." "It's a retrovirus, in which, generally, most diagnosed strains target the musculo-skeletal system, although there was tiny outbreak on Caldos IV just before the war, in which the virus was found in the bone marrow. Mortality rate is at about 60% for most humaniod species. And trust me, we were all surprised to find a virus that could do what it did, but it's a hybrid of a Tellarite Retrovirus and a Trill Bunyavirus." Megan said as they walked down the long hall. "I see," he said. "Most peculiar indeed." He then looked at the two again. "Would it be possible for either of you to take a look at a few things for me?" He asked. "It is not harmful to mammals, but reptilians, such as myself, are in dire straights over it." "Do you know what it's infection vector is?" Megan asked, it wouldn't really help find a cure, but it would help with stop gap measures until a cure of a vaccine could be produced. "I am not quite sure," he said, "but from what I know, it directly attacks the Gorn's ability to regenerate damage, such as a lost limb or other injury. It causes tumors and cancerous growths to form instead, ones highly resistant to treatment." He looked at the two. "I would not ask, except that it is quickly getting beyond control and Gorn doctors are nowhere near having a treatment for it, both because it is highly unorthodox and because resources are spread so very thin." "I'd be willing to take a look at it, if you could send me what information you have on virus, especially it's genome and protein make up, I can get started right away. I don't actually know anyone at what ever the Gorn equivilent of a Health and Science ministry, but if you could put me in touch with one, I'd like to get some case histories and examine it's mode of infection, and the diseases full course." Megan said opening up a new file and starting to write down an outline of what would need to be done, hoping to get some work done before they boarded the Champlain. (Reply Ssarumon, Salid, room for more if you want) "Thank you," he said finally. "That means much to me." He kept quiet now, letting the two discuss further their work. (reply any) (posted by Patrick D.) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva -Deck 113, Science Lounge -- FO- Lt. Cmdr. Ahmed Ibn Salid- 1405) Ahmed listened to Doctor Tallos' answer and while he had a fair knowledge about viral vectoring and viruses in general, he was by no means a specialist. Megan's clarifications and comments quickly proved that he was out of his league. He retained the information, of course, but he'd not be able to help with the solution. Her research was very involved and Ahmed could no possibly hope to follow it after only scanning a few short pages of documentation. Megan explained a lot about the virus and Ahmed felt as if he were a first year biology student in comparison to her expertise. But then the conversation changed from the discussion about this self mutating super virus to a virus that was apparently making it's way through the Gorn Hegemony. Ahmed just stayed out of that conversation. He wasn't a specialized Virologist. His less than complete expertise was limited to the transmission of viruses on ancient Earth among their primitive cultures. He had neither the training or expertise to really tear apart a virus and figure out what made it tick. Megan of course agreed to assist in anyway possible, and Ahmed would be glad to arrange for any resources he could to assist her in that endeavor. The biggest obstacle to solving either of those problems was the civil war. And Salid greatly hoped that he would be helping take that obstacle out of the equation soon. (reply none) (posted by Daniel Greene) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva -Deck 113, Science Labs -- FO- Lt. Cmdr. Ahmed Ibn Salid- 1409) The Laboratory that Ssarumon worked in was filled with replica models of a variety of starships, marked with miniaturized stress flags. The also noted the holographic displays showing stress at a particular space frame passed through the atmosphere of a simulated planet. After a few moments, he arrived at the Science lab, ushering the two into it. "And here we are," he said. "Interesting…" Ahmed replied. "I prefer to do things the old fashioned way," Serixs said with a smile as he stroked his claws over a physical model of a Galaxy class vessel. He tapped his claw tip on it. "Take this for instance." "Galaxy class," he said "Very beautiful and majestic, A large and powerful ship." He then pulled up the simulation data on it and handed it to Salid. "It has the aerodynamic properties of a dead dog," he added flatly. Ahmed smiled at the Gorn officers analogy as he took the offered PADD. He flipped through the screens taking in all the stress information. ~Now this he understood!~ :"Actually, I think a dead dog may have better aerodynamic aspects then the Galaxy class here." Ahmed replied. "In an atmosphere, the wind shear would tear the vessel apart. On the Champlain, the issue is compounded with the addition of a third nacelle, so she could never effectively operate within an atmosphere. The SIF would have to work overtime." "It is the same with the Intrepid class," Serixs continued, "though to a smaller degree. The ship can land, and take off, but maneuverability is severely hindered." "Well in both of those vessels, the structural load will cause the space frame to crumple without the SIF if it's inside a planetary gravity well." Ahmed replied. "I have not been told what the end goal is, only that this data is highly important," Serixs responded. "I have been compiling data from ancient Earth planes as well as flight recorder data salvaged from the Enterprise-D and Voyager. All to create a layered Structural Integrity Field that will allow air to pass over and through it to exponentially increase maneuverability at a fraction of the power cost." This creates a sort of thrust effect and generates lift. The outer layer is what creates the aerodynamic profile and creates better maneuverability, while negating wind shear forces." "How do you maintain the external SIF profile without external emitters?" Ahmed asked. Since SIFs normally were shunted through waveguides embedded in the hull and superstructure of the vessel. "This could be applied to nearly any ship to help improve maneuverability, but the benefit would be negligible just yet unless the hull was more aerodynamic in shape to begin with. An alteration to nacelle pylons for instance to make them more like wings. I was about to run another simulation using an altered Sovereign class model in the wind tunnel if you would like to watch." "I'd be delighted to observe." Ahmed replied. Tisha walked around the room getting a feal for the place and found a empty table and sat down. She went over in her mind all that had happened in the past few days. How she was asked to forgo her application at the academy and join on now as a civillian. The talk her father and her had about watching after Derrick and making shure he was safe. Like she would be able to relly do anything about it if he wasn't. And finally how father was sick and dying and how much time he had left was not certin. And the fight she got into with her oldest brother about how starfleet was a wast of time and you relly can't make a differnce. The only thing that mattered was the vineyards and the buisness. And her responce to that.Kneeing him in the lower area and walking away, gathering her stuff and storming out of the house for good. ~Yes she was only seventeen and could learn a few more mannors but she had had enough.~ thought Tisha deep within herself. When she came back to the hear and now she noticed a lady in a uniform of science department and decided to approach her. As Tisha walked up she saw others in conversation with the lady so she hung back into there was a opening as to not be rude. Tisha walked up to the three and asked, "Excuse me. He offered her his arm and began to head with her toward the entrance to the Science Lounge. "Did I hear you say that you are in Engineering?" Tisha asked. "Yes, I am in the Geneva Engineering Department. I have only been here a year. But I have learned a lot about retrofitting warp engines and how to jury rig repairs," he laughed. "Well I do Cartography and read star chats and maps as a hobby. I really am fascinated by navigation and engineering sciences. Maybe after I get settled you would be kind enough to go with me to get something to eat and we could talk more about this?" asked the redheaded youngster. "Sure, if you don't mind my wife coming to meet us for a late lunch. She would enjoy meeting you," answered Kevin. "She is an officer in the Geneva Science department. I'm hoping to establish contact with her acting Commanding Officer later this afternoon, and I'll fill you in on what I learn afterwards. So far I only know what Command has told us; I'd like to get the details from Lieutenant Frazier myself. I get the impression that there's more to the story of this ship and her crew than the bare details we've been given so far." "I understand Captain. I will begin coordinating with them once they arrive at the Station and we have all the critical needs handled first." Ahmed replied. She handed him some PADDs. "These are the crewmembers who've reported in to me so far; there are also details of two transfers." She smiled wryly. "Already. One is the CONN officer who brought the new shuttles and runabouts - it seems Fleet Command has more need of his skills than we do. And the second is Ensign Linskens, who was to have been assigned to the Science Department. In view of the psychological report from the counselor on the Boudicca, Command has decided to go with his recommendation that Linskens be kept away from combat duty until his sessions with Starfleet counseling are completed. And since the Champlain is being reassigned temporarily as a ship of the line, he will remain here on Geneva for the time being." Ahmed nodded. From what little bit that he had seen of John Linskens while they were stationed together on the Nimitz, he did not seem to be the sort that was likely to handle combat stress well. "I'll set up meetings with the new officers as soon as is agreeable." he replied as he flipped trough the screens of the PADDs. "I believe you served with him for a short time?" she asked. "I didn't know him well on the Boudicca, but I owe him a lot, as do quite a few others, and I believe the decision to transfer him to the Geneva Science Department to be in his best interests." "Yes Ma'am. We were both assigned to the nimitz at the same time. It was during an assault investigation on this station, as-a-matter-of-fact. We ended up dealing with a virus set loose by the humans for Humanity group. John was one of the science officers and I had been assigned as an ACEO right out of the Academy." he replied. "I do agree with the assessment that Mister Linskens is not well suited for combat." She regarded him for a few moments. "Mr. Salid, whilst I very much appreciate the way you're throwing yourself into your new position, I recommend you use part of your time here at Geneva to have some R&R too; once the ship gets here that might not be an option. I don't want to have to make it an order, but I will if I have to. I don't know when any of us will get the chance again, and we all need a break from active service, even if only for a short time, in order to function to the best of our abilities. I will be doing so myself, and I expect you to do the same." "I'm sorry Captain, did I give you the impression that I was planning on skipping out on some shore leave?" he asked her. "I have already booked a holosuite so that I can spend several wonderful peaceful hours sailing on the Bajoran Sea of Carmolg. Additionally, I understand that there is a chamber orchestra on the station and was hoping to join them for a few hours playing my double Oboe. Additionally, I had planned to attend the Mosque here on the station for some devotionals. I have simply decided that to account for all that time off, I had better make certain that all the important ship's business are handled quickly and efficiently." he finished. ~Not to mention I could use the rest after the Cait Prime Mission.~ he added to himself. I know the Nimitz is a ship of the line now, like the Boudicca. And I gather you have had as little leave lately as those of us who came from there." ~And after that last one I know I could certainly do with it~ "So please, Salid, make the most of your time here. The next few weeks and months are going to be pretty hectic and I doubt there'll be time for leave after this for a long time to come." She glanced up at the chronometer on the wall. "But now, Commander, I have an appointment with Dr Caskie, who is going to take me to get a decent-fitting pair of boots. I'll be out until 1700 but you can contact me if you need to." She stood up. She saw a Sergeant walk up to her. "Are you lost Sir." She smiled at him. "I'm looking for Beta platoon 'Troubled Minds'." The Sergeant gave her a slight look. "Next Door on your right is Beta platoon. Sir." She nodded. "Thank you sergeant." She followed his instructions and found her self in a room identical to the one before. She collared a private who pointed her in the right direction. She then headed off to the far end of the room where she had been told the squad should be. "Hay petrol pigeon what are you doing here?" The Marines must really be desperate." Kenneth grinned back and nodded at her rank "Not as desperate as the fleet." Jennifer grinned. “So where are you heading, or can’t you tell me.” “We are being posted to the Champlain.” Her eyes widened. “Really, you know Roberts there?” “Yes. But I don’t think he knows I’m coming.” “Kenneth can we meet later. I believe I prefer to stand, since there is no suitable roost present." he replied. "I see you have had a rather unusual route into Starfleet," she added. "And, ah, you seem very anxious to get assigned to a ship rather than remain as a political coordinator. That is to your credit, although I trust you realize that there will be no special treatment aboard the ship? All my officers and crew are treated the same, regardless of what connections they may have in or out of Starfleet. Although of course any special needs you have regarding accommodation and diet will be accommodated to the best of my ability," she added. "Perhaps, it is only unusual because you have no other Skorr in Starfleet, save myself." he suggested. " I am very pleased to be serving a more active role in the fleet. We Skorr are a long time space exploring species. While we are currently a more restrained species concerning diplomacy and exploration, we are still warriors at heart Captain. To turn away martial aid from a stalwart ally fighting for a just cause would be unconscionable. I am merely doing my part to assist the allies in the 52nd fleet with their justifiable conflict in so much as I may. I have done all that I can from a logistics point of view. Skorria will continue to support your fleet's efforts clandestinely as my father the High King wishes. I, however, having ensured this, felt it was time to assume a more active role in the affairs of our allies. It is my most profound hope that others of my people will see my example and aid your cause more readily." I ask only that you allow me to observe my people's holy days and to participate as fully in the conflict as my abilities allow. I can assure you that my political connections will not be used to garner favor. They may, however, prove useful to us in the future. I leave that for you to decide." He paused and regarded her, taking in her full measure with his sharp eyesight. That may well be a problem between other members of the Federation, but my death or injury could only bring Skorria and the Federation closer together. There is no more sacred bond shared between allies than the spilling of blood; whether it be the enemies or your own. As my father has 44 other senior princes above me, and will average another two junior princes every standard year, our royal line is in no danger of becoming extinct. Each of us are encouraged to find our own way, either politically, militarily or socially. This service is mine." He paused and cocked his head slightly to the right. "Indeed, if such a fate were to befall me during conflict with enemies of the 52nd fleet, I would imagine that the ties between Skorria and our Allies, the 52nd fleet, would be nothing but strengthened. Only after fighting side-by-side for a just cause with honor will your worth as allies be proven and the compacts of the brotherhood of honorable warriors put into place." "We only remain officially neutral because no Skorr before me has chosen to place themselves in harm's way to seal our alliance. The things I observe of the coming conflict will help the High King decide if the 52nd fleet is worthy to shift their status from that of a simple alliance to that of blood alliance. She had left Susan to continue shopping, preferring to bring the plant back to her quarters, since it was pretty obvious that just leaving it lying around somewhere wasn't an option. She had simply dumped the plant on the nearest surface when she arrived and, since she was sore and stiff from sailing that morning, had headed straight for the shower not even giving it another thought. Wrapping herself in a robe she crossed to the replicator and ordering a large pot of Lapsang Souchong, (no milk, no sugar) and a plate of chicken sandwiches she crossed to the comfiest looking chair and curled up in it. She was halfway through the first sandwich before the noise registered. At first she thought it was a small child, but listening again she thought that maybe somebody's cat had got trapped somewhere. She couldn't quite pinpoint the noise so she instructed the computer to open the door and looked up and down the corridor. Everything was quiet and there was no other living thing moving around outside, so sighing she crossed back and sat down in the chair. Halfway through the next sandwich she heard it again. Throwing the sandwich back on the plate she began prowling around the room, stopping every so often to listen. Eventually, as she neared the shelf with the plant she heard the noise again. Raising an eyebrow she gazed down at it. "Is that you? Is that you that's making that noise?" There was no answer, obviously and Josh sighed, "Great Josh. Now your starting to talk to plants as if they could answer you. You might as well contact the men in white coats and let them cart you off to the funny farm here and now." She turned around heading for her chair again, one step and she heard the noise again. Wheeling round she glared at the plant. "It is you. I know it is. You might as well just admit it." This time the plant gave a little shiver and a piteous little mew. Josh looked the little plant up and down and eventually taking pity on it started to remove the wrappings the shop had covered it in for protection. As she did so a padd and a small packet fell out and picking them up Josh activated the padd. It turned out to be the instructions for the care and welfare of Alderan Pitcher plants and Josh skimmed through it quickly. There was a note at the end from the shop owner telling her that the plant had been fed and watered for the day and that all Josh needed to do was talk to the plant every so often and keep it near her until it had grown a little more. Sighing she picked the plant up and brought it over to the table nearest her. Setting it down gingerly she sat down and waited to see if it would react. Thankfully it seemed quite happy so she picked up another sandwich and settled down to read the padd from start to finish. At the end she read over the shop owner's note and started laughing. "Oh dear, oh dear. Keep you beside me until you've grown a little more. Well, I hope you grow quickly, because once we are on the Champlain I don't plan to carry you back and forward between my quarters and sickbay and I can just see the Captain's face if I'm in Sickbay and she gets a report that your sitting in my rooms doing your impression of a Red Alert." Wiping tears of laughter from her eyes Josh poured herself a cup of tea and tipping it slightly towards the plant smiled. "Cheers little one." She’d inquired when she’d arrived on Geneva about the Champlain and in further detail about where the captain could be located. After following what she’d been assured were ‘simple instructions’ she was beginning to feel like she’d been given false information for the amusement of others, which wasn’t sitting overly well with her at the moment. In fact, it was threatening to have a negative impact on the exceptionally pleased mood she’d been in upon arriving at the station. With a sigh, she headed back down to the promenade to find another information desk. She was pleased to see that the desk was manned by a very cheerful looking Bolian. “Excuse me, could you help me locate Captain Susan Rivers? I was told that she was on in offices on the station, but I can’t find them.” She queried, exceptionally hopeful that she’d get the instructions that she needed. “I can certainly look.” The Bolian at the desk smiled up at her and picked up a PADD from a short stack. After a moment, she looked up and continued, “It looks like she is in the administrative office area, I’ll send the information to your PADD if you’d like.” “That would be exceptionally helpful.” Zanarra said offering the PADD to her. “New to the ship?” the Bolian asked as she transferred the data. “Yes, it’s my first posting.” Zanarra replied as the PADD was returned to her. “Thank you.” “Best of luck to you, Ensign.” Still smiling, she returned to the console she’d been working at. (Star Base Geneva - Starbase Geneva - Administrative Offices, Captain Rivers' Temporary Office- Ensign(jg) Zanarra – 1745) Zanarra looked down at the instructions and followed them to the Administrative area. With the instructions in hand, she had little difficulty in locating the office and more importantly the captain’s yeoman who would be able to assist her in locating the captain. “I’m here to report in to the Captain,” she said to the human woman sitting at the desk. “I am Ensign Zanarra.” She had caught herself nearly say ‘cadet’ before her name. ~And how would that look if I can’t even remember my own rank.~ (reply Yeoman Addams) Heading toward the door, she straightened the non-existent wrinkles from the front of her shirt. She thought for a moment about the small silver star ship sitting on the desk of the admiral’s yeoman at academy and how soon it would be before she was on a ship just like it. At least five were needed to stay on the ship. The others were allowed shore leave with the provision that some must come back to take up the duty stations to relieve them after a shift. K't'r's chimed softly to herself as she moved though the station looking about with interest. Her companions walked with her through the promenade. K't'r's carried a few personal objects in a small bag, having little else. None of them wore clothing that most humanoids thought was so vital. Their chitinous glass-like covering suited them just fine. Fabric coverings of most kinds would merely have gotten in the way, hampering their normal agility. K't'r's had on one upper segment of a limb, a small Velcro fabric band which carried a pip and a commbadge. It fit snugly and though K't'r's had not liked it at first, she had become accustomed to it being there. "My orders require me to report in to Captain Susan Rivers and First Officer Lt. Ahmed ibn Salid," she chimed in a soft arpeggio to her friends. "But not until tomorrow's stardate. So I have some free time yet." "Shall we go and look around in the Starlight Lounge?" asked the younger smaller R'l'k. "I am interested in seeing what these other beings are like." "You haven't gotten out much, have you," laughed K't'r's in a major key. "We must change that before I leave your company." The three of them moved quickly, musically chiming and often startling their way though the moving crowd to get out of the crush, and made their way to the bar. Walking on their long segmented legs, the three of them emitted plenty of music of their own as they joined in the noisy cacophony of the bar. It was mainly humans, Bajorans and a few other of the more peaceful looking humanoids. K't'r's was relieved to see that no Nausicans, Klingons or other more aggressive species were in the bar this shift. The bar had muzak playing in the background, a genre of humanoid music that K't'r's detested, claiming it had no spark of soul in it. "Ugh! Musak! Let's see if we can change that." "What are you planning on doing?" asked T'l'r'k, ending in a nervous minor note. K't'r's boldly walked right up to the bartender who was wiping down the bar with a soft cloth. "Do you allow people to sing in here to the crowd?" asked K't'r's in a rising questioning scale. The bartender, a jovial Bolian, looked over the bar at K't'r's and his eyes grew wide and then he smiled with fascination. "You are welcome to sing or whatever you'd like to do on the small stage over there. There is an amp field I can turn on for you if you like." He waved an expansive arm toward one end of the bar at the far end of the room. "Please do and turn off that horrible muzak you are playing," said K't'r's in a slightly dissonant key. "Certainly," the Bolian replied, bemused by the musical and somehow fragile looking alien. "Let's make some real music," chimed K't'r's to her companions with no small amount of anticipation. The three of them jingled their way onto the stage. The smooth expressionless muzak ceased. A few spotlights came on for the stage. "Follow what I do," chimed K't'r's softly to her companions. She turned to the bar crowd and began to sing. After a few lines her two companions joined in. Together, they wove glorious beautiful harmonies that rang out throughout the room, a chordic symphony that enraptured and enthralled. They all took two small steps toward the audience, changing to a higher key at the same time. K't'r's was standing beside her friends with taller T'l'r'k in the middle. The light caught their tiny spines on their heads and they glittered and flashed as they shifted and moved, their fiery opalescent eyes burning and glittering fiercely. The bar crowd was startled but enchanted. Like flies caught in amber, they were all frozen where they stood or sat. Even the Bolian bartender was astounded, his mouth hanging open. The song they wove ended on a major chord and a few arpeggios from K't'r's completed it. For a moment the crowd stood in stunned silence and then applauded and shouted their approval.
