How do you feel?” Rhinehart looked from Telstra to the green-skinned female that approached the bio-bed and back again, wondering how to answer. He could feel the expression of bug-eyed panic contorting his face, but somewhere in amongst the tumult of his thoughts, there came that voice again, small and calm, as if feeding him lines from stage left. ~Traumatic retrograde amnesia,~ it said. ~Global. Highly rare. Probably damage to the hippocampus or temporal lobes or both. But too complete to be explained by your injuries alone. You've dissociated.~ The voice gave him a shred of comfort, enough to help him slow his breathing and respond calmly, even though he had no idea where it was coming from or any real sense of what its words meant. “I don't know,” he said. “I don't know how I feel. I don't know where I am, or how I got here or who you are, or who you are,” and here he nodded toward Telstra, “and I don't even know who I am.” The green-skinned one turned to the other, a note of shock in her voice. “He’s lost his memory. Has he said anything to you that would suggest otherwise?” The words were not exactly comforting, but the inner voice had pre-empted them, and the panic was kept at bay. “Can you remember anything at all?” she said, turning back to him. He frowned, his eyes losing focus as he struggled to think. ~Whatever you do, don't say anything about that 'Elvis' business. They'll think you're barmy,~ the voice chipped in, helpfully. He had no clue what it meant. “Dreams.” he said at last. “Bad dreams. Light and fire. The smell of... of... strawberries? I... I don't... I'm sorry.” A dull throb bloomed behind his brow, and he closed his eyes tightly. When he opened them, he was looking into the concerned blue gaze of the green-skinned female. “No. I can't remember anything. Nothing I can make sense of, at least,” he said, at last. (Reply Henna-Star, Telstra) (Posted by Noel) === (USS Champlain – Sickbay – Nurse Livia Telstra – 0314) “I don't know,” Rhinehart said. “I don't know how I feel. I don't know where I am, or how I got here or who you are, or who you are,” here he nodded toward Livia, “and I don't even know who I am.” Dr Henna-star looked at Livia. “He’s lost his memory," she said, sounding shocked. "Has he said anything to you that would suggest otherwise?” "No, Doctor, he hasn't," Livia replied. “Can you remember anything at all?” the ACMO said, turning back to him. He frowned, his eyes losing focus slightly. “Dreams.” he said at last. “Bad dreams. Light and fire. The smell of... of... strawberries? I... I don't... I'm sorry.” He closed his eyes tightly for a bit, then re-opened them. “No. I can't remember anything. Nothing I can make sense of, at least,” he said, at last. Silently Livia picked up the brain-scanner, ready for when Dr Henna-star would ask for it, as she surely would if she wanted to see whether there was any damage to the brain causing the amnesia or if it was the short-term effects of concussion. (Reply Henna-star, Rhinehart, any) (Posted by Liz) === (USS Champlain – Sickbay – ACMO, Ensign Henna-star – 0315) Henna listened to Rhinehart as he began to recollect his memories. Her face became paler the more she heard. “Dreams.” he said at last. “Bad dreams. Light and fire. The smell of... of... strawberries? I... I don't... I'm sorry. No. I can't remember anything. Nothing I can make sense of, at least,” He said to them. She couldn’t keep the concern out of her eyes. She stood there for a moment or two figuring out what to say. She glanced at Nurse Telstra who was holding a brain-scanner. She quickly gathered her thoughts and turned to face her. “Can I have that please?” Pointing towards the brain-scanner. (Reply Telstra IYW) She held out her hand, took the scanner and said thank-you. She then walked to the head of the bed and looked down at Rhinehart. She could see the confusion in his face. She held the brain-scanner out and looked at the results. “I am looking at your brain to see how you have lost your memory.” She told Rhinehart. The results conclude that Rhinehart had damage to the right side of his brain, which has restricted the memory. ~Traumatic amnesia, he must have fallen on his head, hard. ~ She thought to herself. “I believe that you should regain your memory piece by piece over the next couple of days. You may begin to remember early childhood memories first and then move on to specific details of why you’re here for instance.” She moved the brain scanner away and looked at Rhinehart. She continued. “The fact that you can recollect bits of a dream is a good sign; it means that you can remember things.” She turned to the Nurse. “I believe he must rest at least for a day or so due to the concussion. We could try to give him a drug called Amytal to help recall lost memories but I don’t want to try that just yet as I don’t want to put him under anymore stress than what he is already under.” (Reply Nurse Telstra) She turned back to Rhinehart. “You must rest. AND not worry, your memories will come back in time.” She said to him. "Ow by the way were going to meet one brothers later. Robert is on the Champlain. He work in Operations, bit of a computer nerd but we can't fault him for that." He looked at Ari. "Your right this is very good Gumbo." Ari grinned broadly. "Told you so," he said happily. "Just like me old mum didn't make." He laughed loudly, forgetting he had already made a joke about that before. Durnik shook his head. The Captain had seemed pleasant when Nissa spoke with her earlier – perhaps she just enjoyed shopping and encouraged her friends and officers to do so as well. “Well, it is very nice to meet you, Hyacinth.” Nissa said with complete seriousness and a slight nod in the plant’s direction and a smile for Caskie. “I’ll consider myself duly warned, Doctor, if the Captain ever requests my company for a shopping spree. As for the Emergency plans and triage teams, I will begin working on them as soon as the manifest is on my computer.” Taking another sip of her beverage, Nissa fidgeted nervously. Dr. Caskie was rather relaxed and friendly, but Nissa wasn’t sure what else to speak about. She did get the feeling that her formal nature made her new CMO slightly uncomfortable. The long silences and formal discussion topics here natural to Nissa, but she had noticed on Earth that many humans preferred a more relaxed interpersonal style. “I have to apologize for my sometimes overly-formal nature and my awkwardness, Doctor. I have found that it can make people uncomfortable, but I find it a difficult habit to change. Regardless of how I may perform in social situations, I do hope that you will find me to be a competent physician and a valued member of your staff.” (Reply Caskie, iyw) (Posted by Sarah Feldman) === (Starbase Geneva -Promenade- Taste of Rome Restaurant-- FO- Lt. Cmdr. Ahmed Ibn Salid- 1910) Letty shook her head. "No, you didn't. He didn't give you the chance. Tell him, when he comes back," she suggested. "We could have Eldaarian spring water instead maybe?" "I think I just might. And Eldaarian Spring water sounds like something to try." Ahmed agreed. "It's very nice here," Letty said. "Well, if you don't count waiters who don't listen to you," she added with a wink. Ahmed chuckled. She had a point. It was a little funny that he had gone so far out of his way to set up a nice evening, only to have it foiled at the first opportunity by an overanxious waiter. "Yes, well. It came highly recommended. The first time I was here on Geneva, I was fresh out of the academy. I had the misfortune of asking a Bolian shuttle pilot about restaurants on Geneva. He just went on and on about this place. I think the entire one-sided conversation lasted for about 35 minutes, before I was finally able to get away from him. I was almost to the point of gnawing off my leg, if I had thought it would have helped." He chuckled again. "But I figured that any place that could cause someone to sing it's praises for a little over a half-hour was worth a try. I didn't have any time for Shore leave then, and haven't done much visitation of the station until now. The last time I was on the station I spent two hours carrying shopping bags for a fellow crewmate." He shook his head, smiling. "So enough about my restaurant selection methods. Tell me about yourself?" he prompted. Tell me about yourself?" prompted Ahmed. "There's not much to tell, really," Letty said. "I spent my early years on a little colony on Juvena Nine. My father was a doctor there and my mother was a nurse. Then when I was ten they moved back to Earth, because they wanted more for my twin brother and me than the colony had to offer. It took Harlan and me a while to settle down there but in the end we did. And then eventually we both applied to join Starfleet." Her face clouded a little. "Harlan's an engineer on the Star of Samarkand," she said. "It's one of Doenitz's new ships, Admiral Stakes's flagship. She's one of the old school Starfleet, one of the few left in a position of power. He got a message out to me not so long ago, I don't know how. Through some defectors, I think. He's only a non-comm so he doesn't have the contacts to enable him to leave, unlike some of the officers. But when he can he sends me messages. I haven't heard from our parents in a long time. It's a lot harder to get messages to and from Earth. Harlan hasn't had any news of them either. Or he hadn't." (reply Ahmed iyw) After a moment's silence, she made an effort to distract her thoughts by changing the subject. "Enough about me," she said. "Tell me something about you, something I wouldn't have seen in your record," she added with a mischievous smile. "Well, that shouldn't be too difficult, since my record isn't bulging with information." he replied. He thought about it for a few seconds. "Well You probably already know that my father was Starfleet. He was stationed on the Tripoli during the Battle of Cardassia and was killed during the battle. He and my mother we're very long estranged since I was seven. He didn't want me to have contact with her, so I've honored his wishes in that respect." "He didn't want to be a single father raising a son on a starship, so I lived with my Uncle in Cairo. He owns a sailboat charter service and gives sailing lessons to tourists. I got into some trouble as a teen. Did underground boxing matches." "Got a bachelors of science in Archeology and Ancient Medicine at Cairo University then joined Starfleet. Where I decided to be an engineer instead of a doctor about halfway through the academy." "Let's see, boxed on the Academy team, ran the academy Marathon and was captain of the rowing team during 4th year and was Regatta captain as well." "I play double oboe and love Holodeck sailing trips. And I love food, Love trying new things with food and making different dishes when I cook. I'm a little bit of a perfectionist, never forget anything at all and believe that we should all live our lives to the fullest whenever we can." "Oh… I almost forgot. I have my entire family genealogy memorized, as far back as Shirkuh, who was a great Syrian General during the Third Crusades on Earth. Every Male member of my lineage has served in some sort of military capacity." "So now you know everything about me. Go sailing with me tomorrow, Letty?" he said. "I have a holosuite set aside for 6 hours. It's a Bajoran sea simulation. We can have lunch and just get to know each other. It will be fun." "You must agree that social considerations shape the bulk of an individuals qualities. If there is insufficient moral support among the individuals clutch, then that individual is likely to develop into a bad egg. In contrast a strong and organized society will produce strong productive eggs." The Lieutenant nodded his head affirmatively. “I do concur.” She started, her salad pushed aside and now completely forgotten. “While it is true; the members of a species can be summed up by the development of culture and heritage. However, what of a member of a species that has spent a significant part of the formative years in the company of a species that is somewhat dissimilar from their native beliefs. Would then the person be considered of one culture, the other culture or a culmination of both?” She paused for a moment not quite long enough for the Lieutenant to reply. “This consideration is relevant to your original question as much as it is relevant to your last question. I was raised by Vulcans; however a great deal of my time has been amongst Bolians. Therefore, my perspective and response as to the demeanor of Vulcans in general maybe somewhat skewed.” “I think that in this situation, it would be best to say that I can tell you the demeanor of one Vulcan only. The rest you will have to find with dedicated research into the matter.” She concluded, looking to the Skorr to see what his response would be. She certainly hoped she hadn’t offended him by being so blunt, but she truly enjoyed a platform for debate where the answer was subjective. For her it reinforced the belief that there weren’t nearly as many things in the universe that were distinctly black and white. (reply Dralar) “Letty, what are your thoughts on the matter?” Zanarra asked, wanting to not exclude her new found friend from what was turning out to be an interesting conversation. "This is a very interesting concept. It is exceptionally alien to me. Skorr do not spend any of their formative years outside the communities in which they are raised. They are not even permitted to leave the planet until they reach the age of responsibility. So this concept of being raised in the presence of another species is indeed interesting." "On Skorria, we have districts in our capital city where our allies and visitors from other worlds may live. If they have need to interact with members of my people, they must leave those regulated areas. This is in place to limit their influence among my people. We of course have merchants and diplomats who interact with these members of other species, but they are well past the age of responsibility, and so have already learned Skorr values and heritage." He paused again and cocked his head a second time. "Truthfully I had not considered it to be different among other species. I suppose I had never thought about it in such terms. I thank you for your answer ensign Zanarra. I shall endeavor to view other species differently; more as individuals rather than as a species. I am afraid I do not have a good answer to your question. "I think the influences one has around one can change one's attitudes, if one is of a sufficiently open-minded nature to allow them to do so," she said. "But you need to have that open-mindedness first. I've noticed that with a lot of people, their attitudes have become so ingrained in their early life that to be open to seeing things in a different way comes hard for them. Some people have a harder time adjusting to life in Starfleet than others, for example, if doing so requires them to leave certain customs and attitudes behind." She managed not to look at Dralar's companion/perch-carrier as she spoke. "Take Andorians and Tellarites for one," she said, deliberately speaking of two races not in their immediate vicinity. "They are known to have a deep-seated dislike of one another, and while I can't say I've ever personally met either an Andorian or a Tellarite in Starfleet who refused to serve with one another, I've never actually met any who were friends either. Bajorans and Cardassians can be like that too, although we don't see many Cardassians in Starfleet so it's not so much of a problem, I guess. But individual experiences, good or bad, colour our reactions and behaviour so much even when we don't realise it, don't you think?" He had managed to take the entire day off and he and Letitia had shared a six hour sailing excursion on one of the Holodecks. Ahmed had enjoyed the smell of the alien sea on Bajora, or at least the holographic representation of that same sea. He had done some swimming as he often had in his teen years and the relived memories had refreshed his body and mind. There had been a light Mediterranean lunch on the deck of the small single sail vessel and He and Letitia had talked for most of the time. He had shown her some of the tricks of sailing. He had spent so many summers in his uncles charter boat service and sailing academy that he had welcomed the chance to teach her how to tack a sail and how to tie a few knots. She had seemed interested in the experience and he had greatly enjoyed her company. Eventually the conversation turned to the Captain's invitation to dinner and to Ahmed's pleasure she had agreed to accompany him. They had parted to get ready for the dinner, each presumably heading to their individual quarters. Ahmed had picked her up at 1730 hours. Letitia was dressed fabulously, as he had expected. And Ahmed had been amazed that she could be even prettier than the first night that he had met her at the door to her quarters For his part, he selected an rich crimson Arabian silk shirt and a pair of black hand-dyed Egyptian linen pants. He wore traditional Egyptian sandals and since this was a special occasion, he even wore a traditional black and crimson Arabian turban. They had taken their time walking to the Captain's quarters. They meandered through the promenade, stopping a couple of times to admire some trinket at a vendor's stall. Ahmed had insisted that they pick up a bottle of Andorian Whiskey, which since it wasn't actually made from wheat, meant that he could actually enjoy some of it. At least the Colonel might like some. He had selected the one that the Andorian clerk had suggested, despite the fact that it was fairly expensive, nearly twice that of any other brand. He just hoped he had made a good selection. He next to nothing about Andorian Spirits. As it was, he also brought along the Bottle of Dom Peringnon that he had purchased from the restaurant after all. He had insisted that the bottle wasn't opened. At least that way he could take it to the dinner party. Normally he wouldn't have purchased it, but the waiter had explained that he was attempting to make enough credits to bring his family out of Doenitz space from Bolarus IX. Since he was given a percentage of the revenue that his tables generated, Ahmed had decided that he could afford to be generous this once. It was after all for a good cause. Letitia had of course teased him about being a big softie, but he really didn't mind. It was just the way he felt at that particular moment. They had finally reached the Captain's quarters, which to Ahmed's amazement had been assigned on the Ambassadorial Level. Letitia had mentioned that she had been reassigned but hadn't gone into any details. That had made Ahmed even more curious, although he decided not to press the issue. Ahmed reached out and pressed the door chime. The data for most of the case studies will almost certainly have to be compressed into an external storage device, backed up, and stored here on the Starbase under secure conditions, this way we have access to them if necessary, but we can still store data on the ship.” Nissa said with a calm nod, looking to Dr. Caskie for any additions to her explanation. (Reply Rhinehart, Any) (Posted by Liz) === (Starbase Geneva, Docking Bay – COUNS – Ensign (SG) Olen Rhinehart – 1047) Rhinehart paused and looked back up the length of the docking tube he had just walked down. Crew members milled around him, some sparing him a curious glance, nothing more. Their chatter, muted as it was, filled the umbilical gangplank. Only some spoke with optimism, but Rhinehart could detect a sense of bleeding tension in the anonymous figures that surrounded him, as if the opening of the docking hatch had brought a freshening gust that had helped disperse the gloomy atmosphere of the last two weeks. It had been strange to feel as if he ought to be sharing in the overall sense of grief, while being completely unable to do so. And now, as he caught snippets of conversation – wagers on the possibility of shore leave, plans to track down old friends, trepidation over the wider political landscape and the Champlain's potential role in it – he felt lost. Lost and alone. The view back up the docking tube didn't offer up much of any use, so he decided to turn around and keep going. He paused again as he stepped through the ring onto the deck itself, gazing around him in bewilderment. He adjusted the strap of the messenger bag slung around his torso that held just a few basic possessions – his attempts to pack had once again left him feeling distressingly like he was rifling a dead man's luggage – his eyes alighted on a tall, dark female with expressive eyes and the shorter, darker male beside her. He thought he recognised the faces from among the crew records he had spent the voyage here scrutinising – but then he had studied so many these past few weeks, in an effort to jumpstart his stalled memory, it was really not easy to be sure... But they were obviously standing in expectation, and something about their bearing spoke to Rhinehart of authority before he ever caught sight of their rank pips. A hand came unconsciously to his jaw and rubbed the clean, bare skin thoughtfully. And before it occurred to him to consider it any further, he found himself striding across the deck towards them. “Excuse me, uh...” he said, eyes flicking almost imperceptibly to the rank pips at the female's throat. It was a little more subtle than that, since it was difficult to determine where the counsellor ended and the man began. It was true that his innate analytical abilities had apparently been unaffected by his trauma, and the existence of that small, calming inner voice proved he had retained at least the greater part of his psychological and philosophical grounding. It was his identity as an individual and the culture of Starfleet that he was struggling with. His Academy years and the few short weeks of active service he had read about in his own records triggered no recollection at all. And when that inner voice spoke, it was as if through instinct, bypassing all conscious thought. The knowledge was clearly there – but could he be relied upon to draw on it at will?
