What keeps you here if you are unhappy?" Franklin stopped for a second a bit surprised by the question. ~Why, indeed.~ Then he grumbled and continued on his way. "There is no other life that I could live. Planets do not ask why they keep revolving around suns, suns don't ask why they keep on burning gasses. They just do. All it needs it a spark way down before you care to remember and you just keep on going on, until there is no more fuel for the sun to burn on now more sun to revolve around. And then it's time to fade away, for other planets to start revolving and other suns to start burning. For me my sun is my ship, and as long as it is there I will keep on functioning. That is unless *my* engine stops on working first. But that will be at least one more century away. But to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if deep down all of us here would hope for our ship to explode in a big fireball, even Leprechaun. It would be ..... fitting. Like a nova taking its planets with it to its grave. Death but what a glorious one." Screwhead looked over at the young man, then grinned. "But don't worry, jobs always receive the first priority. Your civvies will make it to their new planet in one piece. It may be a bit later but they'll get there alright, we have our code of honour to say that we will finish the job. Or die trying." (reply Ben, any) (posted by Adrie Geuken) (SS Wanderlust - Section 17 - ATac Ensign Ben Soma-1759) Screwhead looked over at the young man, then grinned. "But don't worry, jobs always receive the first priority. Your civvies will make it to their new planet in one piece. It may be a bit later but they'll get there alright, we have our code of honour to say that we will finish the job. Or die trying." "I've heard my Father speak of the code in the past. He lived by it and taught it to me, hoping that one day I would take command of the Soma's Pride and follow in his footsteps. Who knows, one day I might have if." Ben replied. "Things have certainly changed for freighter crews and Captains. Their ships are getting older, jobs are fewer and further between, replacement parts are harder to find. It gets harder every year to run things honestly." Ben continued hoping he was not about to upset the Wanderlust's engineer by what he was saying. "What is Leprechaun planning to do when he finishes ferrying his passengers?" (reply Screwhead, any) (posted by Milo) (SS Wanderlust - Section 17 - WL Engineer Screwhead - 18:02) Franklin listened to the young man and wondered if the youngster was now regretting the choice he made when applying for a Starfleet uniform. Then he shrugged inwardly. There was still so much life in front of the youngster that that determination was way too early. Only after a few years, or in Franklin's case a few hundred years, could you really tell whether the choice was the right one or not. "Things have certainly changed for freighter crews and Captains. Their ships are getting older, jobs are fewer and further between, replacement parts are harder to find. It gets harder every year to run things honestly." Ben said, breaking the dwarf's thoughts. "What is Leprechaun planning to do when he finishes ferrying his passengers?" Screwhead looked at the youngster through slotted eyes then half grinned. "Leprechaun will do what Leprechaun does. He does not ask people what he should do, apart perhaps from Toro. He tells people what *they* should do. He is the Master, we are his crew. But no doubt he will be working on another grand plan. I do know that he intends to spend the money that he is making on this trip and have the ship overhauled. After that, who knows." the dwarf finished with a clearly visible shrug. "Tell you what, though, there are still plenty of opportunities for traders. You just have to know where to look. And I think he intends to be looking somewhere else for a while. Across the border in Romulan territory, I understand. Says it makes sense as the overhaul will take place in a Romulan dockyard. Apparently he already booked a place there on Shianga 7. Makes sense I guess if you consider that we are finishing this job only 12 light years away from that place. Ahh, here we are, the secondary radio room. Sorry about the outdated equipment in there. We hardly ever use it." (reply Ben,iyw, any) (posted by Adrie Geuken) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mission: Wagon Train Amongst the Stars Stardate 2408.06.18 Day 12 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< (S.S. Hingis - Main Engineering - ACEO Ensign j.g. Elith Rejal - 0916) Elith checked his PADD. With the new engineers and parts, the repairs were going smoothly. That didn't mean that there was little to do: everyone had their hands full. In addition, there was much animosity between both the Starfleet and the Hingis engineers, some groups worked well, others not so well. Elith, much to his dismay, spent more of his time supervising the teams instead of actually working. For the most part, Elith and Williams had an easy time keeping the engineers from causing trouble. Most of the teams could at least work together: the Starfleet engineers were rather willing to listen to the Hingis' engineers take on the systems, and they worked with the limitations. Almost all of the arguments Elith heard were settled within minutes, something that would not happen in a Cardassian counterpart. Sometimes, an engineer would be injured over a disagreement. ~Sometimes, we Cardassians are too proud for our own good. Thankfully, these Federation races are easier to work with in that regard.~ As Elith was looking at his PADD, checking a few items off, he noticed Randell come over to him. He looked up from his PADD, and Randell said, "Any problems over here? Had a minor misunderstanding a couple minutes ago, but everything got sorted out. No punches were thrown." He added with a small grin. "Everything's fine over here. Other than the occasional small argument, there's nothing worth noting." (Reply Randell, ifw) "On a brighter note, I've been looking at our progress. If we keep this pace up, we might be able to make it off of here by the end of the day. Then again, we'll probably be reassigned to another freighter as soon as we're done here." To tell the truth, Elith would be happy to get off of the Hingis, however he wasn't really looking forward to what would come next. (Reply Randell) (Posted by Matt Kirk) (S.S. Hingis - Main Engineering - Crewman Morgan Randell-0918) "On a brighter note, I've been looking at our progress. If we keep this pace up, we might be able to make it off of here by the end of the day. Then again, we'll probably be reassigned to another freighter as soon as we're done here." Elith said. Morgan would be happy to get off the Hingis and on to something else even if it was another freighter. He felt they had worn out their welcome where quite some time ago, the freighter crew would be happy to see them go. Their progress had been going well, better then Morgan thought it would have, no major problems had arisen and everyone seemed content to get the job done as quickly and as efficiently as possible. "Where ever they send us it can't be any worse than it is here." Morgan said. "But then again I guess I shouldn't say that should I. (reply Elith iyw) Morgan then turned around and headed back to supervise the repairs that had been assigned to him. So far nearly 50% of the repairs on the EPS had been completed, he was pleased with the progress. It could have been a lot worse, over all the systems on this particular freighter were not that bad, they were far from good but things could always be worse. Another small argument broke out and Morgan had to play referee, breaking up the dispute before it had a chance to escalate into something more serious. The freighter engineers were very competent people, but they didn't accept help very easily. Morgan could understand to a degree, he was pretty sure how he would feel if the freighter engineers came aboard the Mithrandir and started telling them how they should repair and run their engines. Hopefully by the end of the day he would be able to return to the Mithrandir and resume duties there. Before they had left engine efficiency was down by 3.4% and he wanted to track down the cause, it wasn't a major problem but one he wanted to fix none the less. (reply Elith, any) (posted by Milo) (S.S. Hingis - Main Engineering - ACEO Ensign j.g. Elith Rejal - 2004) ~What time is it?~ Elith thought. He had been working and supervising almost nonstop for hours. As time went on, the tension in the room gradually decreased, to the point where Elith could stop focusing on the engineering teams and start working with them. He had found that while working, especially when in a confined space - which he was now in - time seemed to pass him by. He was always a little unsettled by this, but it was never serious enough for Elith to pay it much attention. Besides, someone usually brought him out of his focus at close enough intervals so that Elith could check the time. "Hey, Rejal." Elith didn't pay the voice any mind, he almost didn't hear it. "Rejal?" Still nothing. "REJAL!" ~Now what?~ Elith checked his PADD for the time. ~2000 already? Have I really been working for four hours straight?~ He stuck his head out from the Jeffery's tube, to find Williams standing over him. "What do you want?" "You've been working in there for hours, Rejal, I thought you died in there." As Elith climbed out of the tube, he said, "I'm afraid you won't be rid of me that easily, Mr. Williams." "Speaking about getting rid of you, we're just about done with the repairs. I didn't think you guys could do it, but you've got the Hingis running almost as well as the day she first left drydock. Anyway, I've been keeping tabs on your progress to give to Randell, since you seemed to be more interested in working than keeping up with him." ~Hm. Looks like I haven't quite shed the loner working method. I should work on that.~ "I'll have to apologize after I've finished fixing this system." "I think it's fixed enough, Rejal. My engineers can cover the rest." "All I've got to do is recouple the power feeds and deflux the plasma buffer, it won't take a moment." "Personally, I think that if you get back in there, you'll stay for hours. You'll find something else wrong." "...That is true. Okay, then. I'll talk with Randell, and we'll start moving our equipment and personnel off the ship." "Right. I'll get an engineer to cover this system." Elith and Williams parted ways, as Elith went over to where Randell was. He could see that Randell was almost as engrossed in his work as Elith was, however he was still conversing with other engineers, which Elith had neglected to do. He walked up to Randell and got his attention. "I apologize for my recent isolationism, I tend to become quite aloof when I'm working. Definitely something I've got to work on. At any rate, how are your repairs coming? Mr. Williams has informed me that the repairs are, for all intents and purposes, complete. We should start withdrawing from the Hingis after I inform the Captain." (Reply Randell, rfm) As Randell started gathering Starfleet engineers and their equipment, Elith pressed his commbadge. "Ensign Rejal to Captain Stakes. Sir, Crewman Randell, the combined Starfleet and Hingis engineers, and myself have completed repairs on the Hingis. The freighter should have no problem with making the journey, especially with the rather competent engineers of the Hingis. Crewman Randell and I are awaiting new orders, sir. In the meantime, we will be moving our equipment and personnel off of the Hingis." I have marked the Hingis as completed. Make your way down to the planet and locate Ensign McGregor, who is lokking for a few strong people to get the medical equipment from the central hospital moved to the freighters. Please review the situation and come back to me with your estimate." (Reply Rejal, Randell, iyw) (Posted by Adrie Geuken) (S.S. Hingis - Main Engineering - Crewman Morgan Randell-2020) Morgan had been monitoring the team’s progress and was pleased, over the last few hours he had even managed to do some work himself. This was coming together very nicely and everything was almost done, the freighter was running almost as good as new. From here on in the freighter's engineers should have no trouble keeping her running. He hardly noticed Elith walking up behind him. "I apologize for my recent isolationism, I tend to become quite aloof when I'm working. Definitely something I've got to work on. At any rate, how are your repairs coming? Mr. Williams has informed me that the repairs are, for all intents and purposes, complete. We should start withdrawing from the Hingis after I inform the Captain." "No need to apologies, I've been known to do the same from time to time. Everyone has their own way of doing things and I've learned to give some leeway in that regard. As for repairs, things are going great. We're nearly finished here, the Hingis's engineers can probably handle things from here." Morgan replied before turning to his team and saying. "You heard the Ensign everyone. Starting packing things up and preparing them for transport." Morgan watched as the Mithrandir's engineers started getting their gear together and handing the repairs over to the Hingis's own engineers. Elith made the call to the Mithrandir as Morgan gathered his own tools and replaced them in his pack. Mithrandir - CO's Quarters - Prime Director, Dak & Reyna Osiris - 2016) Dak had politely thanked the Captain for his kindness in offering his family luxurious accommodations, compared to what the majority of his people were 'enjoying', and informed Stakes that he had already asked the OPS officer to arrange for their personal belongings to be taken to their new quarters. Captain Stakes gestured with his arm and said that it wasn't a problem, and that he expected that Dak would rather have made quarters close to his people, to which Dak gave a nod of assent and told himself 'that of course Stakes would understand, he was a leader of his people too and knew how a true and caring leader would think. "...but I thought it better to keep you closer to the line of command to keep our communication channels as short as possible." Again Dak nodded, "agreed Captain." He said and smiled genuinely for he hadn't thought of that, and as he thought more about it, knowing he had enemies among the people that would stop at nothing to get their way, ~ for haven't they already killed one innocent? ~ Perhaps it would be better for his family to be safely aboard the Mithrandir and out of prospective harm's way, thus easing Dak's own mind so he could concentrate fully on ensuring the journey went well for all and plan more for their arrival at their new colony. The Captain nodded and gestured to the two to go through to the living room, following them as they did so. Once they were in the living room, the Captain cleared his throat and invited Dak and Reyna to sit down on the couch as he signaled to his yeoman to bring some refreshments. While they waited for refreshments to be served, Dak gazed around the room. The decor was interesting and gave him some insight into Stakes' personality. When they were served Captain Stakes lifted his onw glass and gave a toast. "To a prosperous journey" he said. Both Dak and Reyna lifted their glasses and echoed Stakes toast, then Dak added. "To a safe journey and bright beginnings." After the toasts he drank more and then placed his glass on the table and leaned forward towards Stakes. "As we will be on this ship, Captain Stakes, I was wondering if it would be possible for me to faciilitate your transporter system or a small shuttle on a daily basis, in order to visit the freighters and meet with my people and my administrative team?" Beside him his wife sighed. She had hoped he would have used most of the time on the journey to take an extended vacation from his duties, and spend more time with her and the children. ~ Lord knows he's going to be working around the clock once we land. Dag-nabit I should have known not to build up my hopes for that, all he ever thinks about is work, work, work! ~ Reyna also couldn't help wondering what his three mistresses thought about that. (Reply Stakes, any) (Posted by Sal) (U.S.S. Mithrandir - CO's Quarters - CO, Captain Archibald Stakes - 20:21) "To a safe journey and bright beginnings." Archibald raised his glass to the new wish and examined the couple as they sat and enjoyed their drinks. Finally Dak put down his glass and leant towards Archibald and asked if he could get some sort of personal transport set up. Reyna sighed quite audibly and Archibald considered that he himself was quite blessed with a wife who understood that the needs of the population or crew outweighed the need of the individual. But then again, she should as she was in exactly the same position as himself, if not more. "I'll order my senior pilot to fly you where ever you need to go, Prime Director. I understand the need to remain in contact with your people. It is regrettable that for people in command so many heavy requirements are placed upon them. But then again, someone has to be in charge. Regrettable but unavoidable. If you wish, Lady Osiris, I can offer you the service of my yeoman? I am afraid that those in command find that the time for social interactions is of limited priority. But she can show you around and grant access to wherever you want to go. It's a small ship, I am afraid, without many amenities. But those that are available, I will gladly grant you full access to." (Reply Dak, Reyna, any) (Posted by Adrie Geuken) (U.S.S. Mithrandir - CO's Quarters - Prime Director, Dak & Reyna Osiris - 2022) To Dak's request for some sort of personal transport, Captain Stakes was kind enough to say he'd order his senior pilot to fly him wherever he needed to go. Dak couldn't help but hear his wife Reyna's exasperated sigh and understood how disappointed she must be, having felt that once they were off the doomed planet, that Dak could take things a little easier. Unfortunately she failed to remember how dedicated he was to the welfare of his people and would not rest until they all were safely on their new planet and settled. From what the Captain said about how regrettable it was that people in command had heavy requirements placed upon them, and subsequently offered the services of his own yeoman to Reyna to show her around the ship and grant her access to wherever she wanted to go. "....It's a small ship, I am afraid, without many amenities. But those that are available, I will gladly grant you full access to." Stakes concluded. Dak smiled his gratitude to Stakes for understanding his wife's frustrations and was glad that Reyna was pleased to accept the kind offer. "That is very kind of you Captain Stakes, I think it would certainly help pass the time if our family were able to access your recreational and social facilities. Thank you." Reyna said, giving the Captain one of her dazzling smiles that lit up her whole face and made her green eyes twinkle. "Indeed, that is most accommodating of you, Captain, and I am truly grateful for your hospitality and the use of your pilot and craft. I will happily make use of him or her as soon as I receive an updated roster of where my top officials are, so I can contact them concerning the people assigned to the same vessels." He glanced at Reyna and saw a frown beginning to mar her brow. "But not until tomorrow. I plan to spend the rest of this evening with my family, settling in to our fine quarters." (Reply Stakes, any) (Posted by Sal) (SS Tribune, Shuttle Bay - ACEO Ensign j.g. Elith Rejal & SPO Ezekiel Odysseus Hawke - 2038) ~Yet another freighter down. How many more to go? To tell the truth, I've lost count.~ Elith thought as he waited in the freighter's shuttlebay for the next shuttle. Repairing the Tribune resulted in some unforeseen consequences which took longer to fix...which Elith certainly did not enjoy. But, the Tribune was finally shipshape, and Elith was happy to get off the ship and back onto the Mithrandir for a short rest before repairing another freighter. Obviously, the Mithrandir's transporters were hard at work sending supplies to the freighters, so Elith had to rely on the shuttlecraft to ferry him from ship to ship, which was rather inconvenient, as they were often late and the pilots were as tired as Elith was. One of the Mithrandir's sleek shuttles touched down on the center pad in the large hangar of the Hingis. The pilot got out quickly - though with enthusiasm propelling him, not urgency. Upon seeing the man, Elith recognized him as the very first person to welcome him aboard when he had first set foot on the decks of the Mithrandir. ~Never thought I'd see him again....~ Hawke, for his p art, recognized Elith instantly. This was not because he knew Elith's features well enough to tell them from those of any other Cardassian, but Elith was the only Cardassian Hawke had ever seen in a Starfleet uniform. Without many words exchanged between them, Hawke snatched up Elith's gear and took it on board the waiting shuttle. (Mithrandir Shuttlecraft - ACEO Ensign j.g. EElith Rejal & SPO Ezekiel Odysseus Hawke - 2042) The silence within the shuttle once the two "Fleeters" had gotten underway was intolerable - at least to Hawke. "So, you’re a Cardassian...?" he said, trying to break the ice. Elith responded after a few seconds, "Last time I checked." "Human, myself," said Hawke, at which point, Elith thought ~ Is there something wrong with this guy? Is it safe to let him pilot this shuttle?~ Within moments of wondering about the man's qualifications, Hawke demonstrated himself to be a remarkably competent shuttle pilot. Hawke came as close to buzzing the bridge as regulations would allow. He then executed a barrel roll and muttered "yee ha, Starchy," under his breath. ~Maybe I was wrong...?~ Elith thought. "Fight in the wars, did you?" Hawke asked, smiling from ear to ear. "How did you know that?" asked Elith. "Figger most Cardassians did. Militocracy, isn't it? The Cardassian Union, I mean." "A common misconception. The Cardassian Union has a civilian government, however it has come to pass that the Union has been involved in many military conflicts of late." Elith replied, his mind on the Federation-Cardassian War he served in not so long ago. "I'm an ex-officer, myself. Resigned and tried retirement after the Darn-Nutz war. But the Fleet is home. So I'm back ... aas an enlisted pilot." "How nice for you." Elith replied. ~Darn-Nu tz? Does he mean Doenitz?~ (USS Mithrandir Hangar - ACEO Ensign j.g. Eliith Rejal & SPO Ezekiel Odysseus Hawke - 2045) Once aboard the Starfleet vessel, Hawke offered to be Elith's porter, to carry the officer's gear to Engineering. Elith stated he'd probably keep them in his room instead. The Cardassian also declined to have the items carried for him. Hawke responded with, "Well, let me get you a drink! "Hard2Port, then, sir?" ~Hard to...oh right, the bar.~ "Sure...I suppose." "I'll let you stow your gear, then, and I'll meet you there." ~Why not?~ "All right, then. See you later." (USS Mithrandir - Deck 02, "Hard2Port" ââ€" Hawke - 2100) Elith entered the social center of the starship and found Hawke was already there. The pilot was not at all reserved, and held a glass in each hand. Elith thought, ~Here we go.~ "Sir!" Hawke said, "this is yours." The pilot offered a glass of the Cardassian beverage Kanar. Hawke identified it for the officer, unnecessarily, then announced the name of his own beverage. "I'm having 'Evasive Maneuvers," -he announced with a grin. Elith said, very sedately, "Good evening...." while thinking ~Is he drunk already? Do humans really have that low a tolerance? How much did he drink? And, by the way, what the Hell is an "Evasive Maneuver"?~ Looking for some potential refuge from the pilot, a man very different from himself, Elith saw Ensign Lanista, whom he recognized from Academy classes they'd shared. He never talked with Lanista himself, but he figured that he might as well start: they were both ACEOs, after all. Elith saw that Lanista was with someone else, that medical ensign he arrived on the Mithrandir with. (Reply Lani) The young doctor rolled her eyes, "Well I know him," And with that she started to get up. People said Klingons don't tease, but that was not Ava's experience. (Reply Lani) "We exchanged pleasantries, I was leaving the Fo's office, he was going in," Ava said as she left their table. The Acmo maneuvered her way towards her fellow ensign, "Good evening Ensign." Ava smiled, doing a far impression of the last time their paths crossed. "How did your meeting with the FO go?" (Reply Elith) "Better than mine then," Ava smiled up at the imposing man, "Why don't you come over and join us, Lani and I are just catching up...." (Reply Elith) "Tosh! I won't take no for an answer, come on." Had anyone that knew Ava been watching as she linked arms with the Cardassian and with force of personality alone propelled him to the table and the waiting klingon they would have made the comment that she was getting more like her mother everyday. Ava would have died on the spot. (Reply Elith/Lani/any) (Posted by Jodie) (U.S.S. Mithrandir - Sickbay - Acmo Ensign(jg) Ava McGregor- 2320) "Report!" ~Oh great. That's all we need. ~ Ava had arrived a scant minute before from medlab one with more than a little bad news. Time was not on their side. "Dr Nymes' condition is critical." Ava explained as she gave the captain only half of her attention, the rest remained firmly on her patient. "We have no option now but to prepare him for stasis. That will give us the time that we need to synthesise an anti viral. The relatively harmless influenza type the colonists came on board with entered into a rapid antigenic shift when it came into contact with Dr Nymes. He is patient zero and it has been contained." Ava's explanation was short and sweet. She saw no reason to blind the captain with detailed physiological explanation of what was happening. It would in all likelihood be wasted on him. Archibald nodded as it was consistent with what Olorin had tried to tell him, but thankfully with less medical jargon. "By all means, freeze him, Doctor," he responded. "And of course, you realise that as soon as you do, you will become the de facto Acting Chief Medical Officer. But I am sure that you will cope. Mind you, you will have to. Failure in this case will not be an option. But like I said, I am sure that you will manage just fine. I will inform the medical staff on the freighters on the change in command and to contact you in any cases of emergency. Oh, and Doctor? I know that my medical knowledge is quite rusty and definitely not up to date but a change in viral behaviour of this magnitude is quite alarming, is it not? A change of its coding so that a normally relatively harmless virus suddenly becomes life threatening for people with specific genetics is quite worrying, is it not? How sure can we be that this is the last change the virus is going to make? It would be a rather difficult situation if the virus mutates further and suddenly isn't restricted to people with one genetic makeover anymore, wouldn't you agree? Especially considering crowded conditions? Of course, I would not dream of telling one of my department heads how to perform their duties." Archibald regarded her with a stare then looked back at the Trill patient before turning away. "Keep me posted, Doctor. Ava answered smartly and pointy turned her full attention back to her patient as she mentally kissed any chance of sleep goodbye. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mission Wagon Train Amongst the Stars Stardate 2408.06.21 Day 15 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< (U.S.S Mithrandir - Sickbay -Ensign(jg) Ava McGregor - 02:00) Doctor Nymes was safely in stasis, both the symbiot and the host had survived the procedure. Ava now sat at his desk the dregs of a double espresso at her left side. The now up to date schedule transferred to a PADD and ready for the captain’s perusal. The LMH would probably have something to say about it, "Tough cookies." Ava muttered aloud as she picked up the espresso cup looked down at the contents and wrinkled her nose as she thought better of it. The cup and saucer found there place on the desk again as the Doctor closed her eyes and leaned back in the chair. The virus swam large in her mind’s eye. An antigenic shift was not unusual, it was the speed of it that was terrifying. However the anti viral they did have was eradicating the virus in its original form. Ava had already been in contact with the colonist’s chief of medicine. There was now a plan in place that would insure by the end of tomorrow all colonists and crew of the convoy will have received a prophylactic vaccination. Medical staff would be stretched to the limit but it had to be done to eradicate further risk. "You didn't waste any time I see. Comfy?" Grey eyes snapped open and glared up at the LMH."Actually no, I’m going to get a start on the vaccination programme," Ava stood and stretched, glad for the caffeine kick as she left, ignoring the LMH's amused look, "You have sickbay," "You’re going to vaccinate them in their beds?" He asked falling in step beside her. "Nooo.,.. I’m targeting them at their duty stations." Ava picked up the medkit bag she had already prepared with vaccine and hypospray for her trip around the ship. "Are you going to fit for duty this morning?" Ava paused and looked at the LMH a twinkle of amusement in her eyes, "Why Doctor, did I detect a smidgen of concern in your voice?" "I believe you’re over caffeinated Doctor," The LMH stated deadpan. The grin Ava flashed the LMH on the way out the door made her look too young for the position she now held and the responsibility that went with it. (Reply Any) (Posted by Jodie) (Shuttle to Mithrandir- ACSO Martzia Kosmanl-1500) Martzia had waited at Starbase Geneva for two days. She had hitched a ride there, skipping the standard shuttles, and arrived two days ahead of schedule. This gave her plenty of time to meet people and listen to the scuttle on the USS Mithrandir. Knowing how to decipher truth from fiction was a skill she had learned early on it meant survival in her early years. She had thrived on the fast pace that her training, assignments and finally graduation at the academy. However, she had enjoyed the much needed down time on Geneva. Avi had met her on the starbase and they had enjoyed a dinner and a few hours of game playing. He only could stay a day of course and was off to who knows where. Next, she had caught the shuttle to meet the Mithrandir and taken the time to prepare as best she could for her new assignment. Excitement was a great understatement about the feelings Martzia had, after all she had worked years to get this post. No Starbase or colony or planet side work would do for her, she liked being in the thick of things and that is where starships went. Checking her duties that were listed again, only the broadest scope of course, she leaned back, took a long slow deep calming breath as the Captain of the shuttle announced their arrival and docking procedures commencing with the USS Mithrandir. The skill of this particular captain left a bit to be desired as he roughly docked and she departed. The quartermaster was a friendly lad and assured her he would get her things into her quarters and send her assignment to her personal PADD. They had made arrangements to meet later for a welcome aboard drink. He then gave her the PADD and she headed to the Captains Ready Room. (USS Mithrandir docking area to Captain's RR) There had been no missing the freighters of all kinds that were with the Mithrandir and she knew the ship was in the process of transporting approximately 15,000 colonists and these sundry ships to a planet close to the Neutral Zone. She suspected there was more to it but that didn't involve her at this point. The freighters looked in a terrible state and in need of a few good engineers and repairs. Finally the turbo lift doors opened and announced that she was on the bridge and the directions to the Captain's Ready Room. She had read much about him and honestly couldn't wait to meet him in person. She had read in his bio that he was a strong believer in discipline and the chain of command, something she had had drummed into her from age seven. A lost waif to a Starfleet officer, who would have thought it possible but him. ~Protocols Martzia, protocols...~ She laughed a bit as this thought and his voice ran through her mind. She straightened her back, stretched a bit taller, breathed, adding an air of confidence she rang the chime. Entering she stood at attention, cocked an eyebrow and stated firmly, "Ensign JG Martzia Kosman reporting in for duty, sir." "Seer kehertur herrrrr." he bravely attempted then looking at his csreen he was relieved to see three green lights, meaning that this time the computer has accepted his answer. [Genaediges Fraulein] ~Oh brother!~ Archibald licked his lips as he tried to twist his tongue around the words. [Genaediges Fraulein] ~I heard you the first time!~ "Kuneedigus fffrow line." Only two greens this time. [Genaediges Fraulein] Again a warning glance towards his daughter who stood there desperately trying not to belch out in laughter. "Computer, stop. Care to remind me why I am doing this?" he asked his yeoman. His daughter bit her lip and finally managed to keep a reasonably straight face when she said: "Result of your appraisal. You scored too low on diplomacy and Starfleet felt it best if you engaged in learning different languages and getting familiar with different cultures. "And why Allemana? It's only spoken on one planet in the whole galaxy. Old German settlers, if I remember correctly." Esme shrugged. "Don't blame me, Starfleet picked that one. And Skree and Mahandarin. I guess they feel that the mix of different languages and different language bases will be beneficial. But it could be worse. They could have included Bynar's language. That would have really been a tongue-twister." Archibald stared at his daughter for a second then shook his head. "If you can't be serious," he started but was then disrupted when his door chime rang. The doors swished open and a rather tall officer walked in. She came to attention and stated firmly, "Ensign JG Martzia Kosman reporting in for duty, sir." Archibald nodded. "Ah yes, we were expecting you. Yeoman, you can go." He waited for his daughter to leave, whilst he selected the section of personnel files on his computer. "Yes, there we are. Ensign Kosman, our new assistant chief science officer. A major in Physics Multi-Spacial Theorems and Technology, I see. Fine." Archibald got up from his desk and stepped towards her as he extended his hand for a shake. "Welcome aboard, Mister Kosman. Let me start, Ensign, by explaining that I run a tight ship. A *very* tight ship. You may have misgivings about any orders and you may express those misgivings but once that is done and taken into consideration, you *will* follow the commands, without question, without hesitation. You are now a Starfleet officer and are entitled to wear the uniform as one, but that comes with an expectation. The expectation being that you will do your utmost to uphold the rules and regulations of this organisation and the Federation that we represent. In short, Ensign, you took an oath and I will hold you to it. Live by it and you will do fine on this vessel." Archibald returned to his seat and gestured the newly arrived officer to take a seat on his sofa opposite his desk. "Now then," he said as he sat down. "You must be aware that the Nova is the most up to date research vessel currently in operation. So you will appreciate that we have a large selection of scientific equipment. *All* of which you are expected to become familiar with. I am sure that the current scientific personnel will gladly assist you with that. Furthermore I feel I must stress that the current Chief of Science is unavailable at this time and it is unsure if and when she will return. Until that time, Ensign, I expect you to run the department in a precise and acceptable manner, ensuring that the department runs at optimum efficiency and is ready to undertake any of the work that will be required of it. I will refrain from making you an acting Chief of Science for the moment until I am satisfied that you will be able to fulfill that position in earnest. I believe I do not have to impress upon you the requirements for proper conduct and exemplary scientific knowledge that will be required of you." Archibald nodded to her once. "I would suggest, Ensign, that you visit your quarters, the computer will tell you where they are, settle in and make contact with the following people at least. Firstly, the medical department for a full physical examination, then the counsellor for an appointment for a mental assessment and then current acting assistant chief science officer, a Mr Masterson, who can fill you in on your department and departmental needs. Once that is accomplished I wish you to contact one of our engineers, Mr. Lanista, who has come up with a way to improve our scanning capabilities involving multi-probes, which has run into a few technical difficulties. She will be glad of your assistance, I have no doubt." Archibald nodded again once. "Oh, and one more point, Ensign, I understand that you are a Chameloid, a shapeshifting creature. This ability can come in very handy but can also lead to untold confusion. Therefore, Ensign, you will inform me or my second in command, Commander Okita, of any situation where you believe the skill is required for us to make the final decision. Now then ensign, is there something you wish to know?" (Reply Martzia, rfm) (Posted by Adrie Geuken) (USS Mithrandir - CO Ready Room - ACSO Martzia - 15:30) "Oh, and one more point, Ensign, I understand that you are a Chameloid, a shapeshifting creature. Therefore, Ensign, you will inform me or my second in command, Commander Okita, of any situation where you believe the skill is required for us to make the final decision. Now then ensign, is there something you wish to know?" Martzia had taken her seat as directed and had listened to what the Captain had asked of her and it was all of course reasonable and sound; standard procedure really. However, this last bit, '...a shapeshifting creature...' '...creature...'!? Not Species? Martzia let that last statement roll around her mind a bit. ~ Vhat does he think I am a Founder for heaven sakes. Oh, dhe pencil is under dhe table so I vill become a mouse. ~ She was not known to use her abilities when in a jam; so far she had never needed to in fact. That was her personal skill challenge. She took a slow breath and spoke calmly and respectfully even though her accent poured forth; anyone knowing her well would have known this was a sign of one of three things fear, stress, or anger. "Sair, respectfully, I am not known to shift witout some reason. I vill respect your orders of course. However, Chameloids are not like founders in dhat we can just take on random shapes at a drop of a hat. We must practice each shape for a period prior to ... shifting. ~Got I hate dhat tairm~ I am young for a Chameloid und 'av only a few practiced shapes mastered and none dhat would be helpful to my verk or dhis ship I am afraid." Martzia let the Captain digest that information a bit. Normally better able to control her accent t when speaking, she didn't try and control it this time, not when speaking of something so personal and so close to who she was and what she had accomplished. Her Rs took on their comfortable rolls and the accent of her family became even thicker. ~I vill 'av to practice later, now is not dhe time to werry about dhis accent of mine.~ In truth she was not aware of many or any Chameloids in Starfleet perhaps that was something she had purposefully not looked up and she should have checked; seldom was she insufficient in the area of hinder work, but this was one area she purposefully never cared to dwell. ~Dhey probably ver traitors or someting.~ She mostly just thought of herself as human ... with a fun quirk to battle. That battle, she had thought, would be less with her graduation from Starfleet and assignment to a ship. However it seemed the distrust her father had warned her about was still very real. She had not thought to develop her morphing abilities, her preferred term, beyond playtime up to this point it had always been something she kept private and separate from her work, but challenged.... ~Martzia dhis is not challenge. He is shust cautious as any Caiptain should be.~ She could hear her father's voice as if he himself were in the room. "Simple changes I 'av mastered, height, size, all minor and of not much consequence. So you see it isn't like I can shust pick a random shape or species and shift, sair. Also, you may know dhis of course, we also have involuntary morphs when sensing danjair or ... attraction." She blushed ever so slightly. "Dhoze are mostly of color changes." Martzia paused again, forming her next request carefully. "I vould also like pairmission to shift when running my holodeck relaxation program. You should have a registered copy and its approval in my file if not I can supply one. I shift easily to the species I use within dhat, othervise the only other time I typically 'av only shifted width friends during our free time." (Reply Stakes, rfm) (Posted by Ber) (SS Wanderlust - Civilian sector 44- ATac Ensign Ben Soma-1925) Ben and Lanista were walking down a corridor on the Wanderlust, one of the few they were actually allowed to walk down. Ben was still trying how to get to other areas of the ship to try and find whatever it was that Sean was obviously hiding, otherwise he would not have restricted their access to the ship. As they continued down the corridor Ben heard someone say pss, Ben turned as did Lanista to find a civilian how looked like he had just ran a marathon. He seemed shocked at the sight of Lanista which Ben could understand, the ACEO was a very tall woman. "Please, Sirs," he said quickly. "You must help me. My sister. I ....." But before he could continue someone in a blue shirt began shouting, "Hey! You! Get back here, NOW!" The blue shirt appeared very annoyed at the civilian for some reason, the poor fellow froze in his tracks as the blue shirt began to approach him. Ben was curious to hear the young man out so he stepped between him and the blue shirt just as the blue shirt made a grab for him. Ben caught the blue shirts arm and merly said, "That is uncalled for." Then turning to the young man as he released his would be captor’s arm he asked, "Is there something you would like to say to me young man? I am Ensign Ben Soma of the USS Mithrandir, this is my colleague Lanista." The blue shirt was visibly shaken by Ben's enquiry, it seemed clear that they did not want him to speak to the Federation representatives. This bothered him and he wanted to find out why the civilian was being treated like a prisoner rather than a guest. I am Ensign Ben Soma of the USS Mithrandir, this is my colleague Lanista." Malak quickly took the few steps to reach the group and placed a hand on the young man's shoulder. "I'm sorry, but I am breaking this up. This man has no reason to be here, in fact his presence here could easily lead to dangerous situations as he has never been aboard a ship before. That is why the civilians are required to remain within the sectioned off sectors. And that is exactly where he is going back to. We've kept our eyes out for this one. Nothing but trouble, this one. He has been trying to get out before. And since he is a danger to himself and other it is my task to return him back to safety and I will do that. Right now." His hand grasped the man's shoulder and he started pulling and pushing him back towards the main entrance as he nodded towards the Starfleet officers. "Sirs." (reply Ben, Lanista, any) (posted by Adrie Geuken) (SS Wanderlust - Civilian sector 44 - ATac Ensign Ben Soma-19:30) Ben watched as the blueshirt grabbed the young man by the shoulder and resisted the urge to grab and break his arm for his rudeness. The blueshirt nodded to him and Lanista as he dragged the civilian towards an entrance. Ben turned to Lanista and said he would catch up with her later, he was determined to find out what the young man wanted to say about his sister. He jogged to catch up with the civilian and his jailer. "Whether you like it or not I will find out what this young man wanted to tell me. As for you labelling him a trouble maker, I will make that distinction for myself." Ben said as he caught up. The way the blueshirt was treating the boy was not a method that Ben approved of, unless it was actually warranted. But how much trouble could he have caused to justify physically dragging him back to where he came from. The blueshirt hadn't even offered to let him say his piece, or even inviting Ben along to hear the boy's story while he returned him to his *holding cell*. Malak thought about it for a few seconds then repositioned his grip on the young man's tunic and pushed his along again. "Can't stop you there. But the Master of this ship was quite clear to us to keep all civilians inside their designated zones so that they can't cause problems and won't get hurt. And that is exactly what I am intending to do. Bring him back to his designated zone, that is. Too bad that neither the Chief or the ship's Master will allow for restraints to be used. Is the third time already this day that we had to reclaim this guy. It's not like we have nothing better to do than to play a nursemaid for mental cases." Malak pushed Durean through the main entrance doors and gave him an additional push that nearly made him fall over. "Now ... you ... stay ... out ... of ... trouble and go back to your room!" Malak loudly exclaimed at the youngster then turned and walked away, to take up a position next to the doors, his eyes resting on the young Star Fleet officer for a second then scanned the area for any signs of trouble.
