Screwhead nodded. "Very little, Fleeterboy." Screwhead responded. “But my days as Screwhead Rotator are long one. Just Screwhead will do fine." Fleeterboy then continued " I do not recall saying I was an engineer. I said I was an engineer's escort, if you or Mr. Leprechaun took for granted I was an engineer then the misunderstanding is your error. I do have some engineering background having grown up on a freighter owned by my parents." Screwhead craned his neck to look at the young man and studied his face while the Klingon said: "Well, that's almost certainly going to come in handy," "Indeed it will. So you're Neddy and Freya's boy then? I should have recognised the name. Yes, you do have your father's nose." Screwhead then sighed. "We were sorry to hear of their deaths. They really went too soon. What rotten luck to jump in front of a Borg ship. We met, you know? When Peppie was still in charge. Must have been at ......" Schrewhead scratched his nose as he tried to remember. "Maunara 9, I think. Freya knitted a leg bone of Leprechaun, when he had fallen off a platform. Didn't have a son, back then, I think, but I can look it up. And perhaps find a bit of footage. Peppie was always taking films. I'm pretty sure he filmed the farewell dinner when they left. He always did. Mind you, it will take me a while to find them. As I said, Peppie was always taking films and there must be some 700 discs that he filled." (Reply Ben) Then Screwhead continued to talk about the work. "The energy accumulators problem," Lanista responded, "disappears if you use anodyne relays. If you've got the spare parts, I could make some for you. And that's without having to overhaul your Bussard collectors. Getting new ones would require time I believe we haven't got." Lanista looked to Soma. "Days only, right?" She asked him. Ben nodded his head and said," We only have a couple days to complete the necessary repairs to your engines. We cannot completely rebuild your engines in the time allotted but we should be able to make enough repairs in that time to ensure you can maintain warp 5." "I think that would require more work than I've got time allotted. I have an idea about how to get Neutronium, but I'm not exactly sure it's up to regs in the Fleet." The Klingon then turned her face towards Fleeterboy for a second when Fleeterboy spoke " I have no previous experience with ionic drives myself, I can only recall ever seeing one that I can remember. If you give us access to your library computers to study up on the subject it is possible I may be able to assist you, technical specifications and operating parameters would help us in the manufacture of new components. Maybe we can find a substitute for Neutronium, something that will hold for the duration of the trip until you can find a shipyard to overhaul your engines." "And maybe access to your comm relays," Lanista added. "Soma here, can coordinate with the Mithrandir for anything we can't scrape together on the Wanderlust." "Maybe we can find a substitute for Neutronium, something that will hold for the duration of the trip until you can find a shipyard to overhaul your engines," Soma said. "Ensign Lanista should be able to give you a more definitive solution. Cloudwalker will be the one handling the more delicate procedures, I'm just here to perform the grunt work." "If you consider being liaison between Wanderlust and Mithrandir grunt work," Lani' added. Suddenly Screwhead found himself back on the ground, whilst the Klingon scribbled something onto her PADD. She handed the PADD to Soma and then turned to face him. "Screwhead, I know my way around an engine compartment. Why don't you take my colleague here forward - or in whichever direction you’re hiding your comm array. He'll need to contact our ship." Not really sure why the Klingon needed to communicate with the young man via a PADD, Screwhead regarded her sternly. The feeling that they were up to something grew stronger when the Klingon then tried to occupy Screwhead's attention by talking shop. Screwhead sighed and rubbed his squeezed neck, which started to hurt from having to look up so high. "Our power source is spiking, Cloudwalker. So without protecting them against the surges, we can't use anodyne relays. As for a replacement for Neutronium, don't you think that we tried? So far, Neutronium is the only liner material that stopped the ions from corroding the inside of the tubes. The ionisation charge that the ions carry is just too much for anything else." Screwhead then looked at them both. "But look for yourself. I'll take Fleeterboy to the nearest comm-station. It's two decks up and see if I can get some library files for you. But don't expect there to be much. The original engine design was alien and a lot of it has been copied without actually understanding why." (Reply Cloudwalker, Fleeterboy, any) (Posted by Adrie Geuken) (SS Wanderlust - Section 17 - ACEO Ensign SG Lanista - 17:35) "Our power source is spiking, Cloudwalker," said the Wanderlust's Engineer, "So without protecting them against the surges, we can't use anodyne relays. She wasn't sure which of them she felt more sorry for. Franklin seemed to enjoy living in a free-spirited atmosphere but he could be quite annoying, at least based on short acquaintance. Soma seemed not to be able to relax enough, even while on-duty, to enjoy the joys the Wanderlust could bring him. The Mithrandir's hybrid ACEO shrugged then entered the freighter's Engineering compartment. She could smell the ionization the blue creature had mentioned. The odor was more pungent that the smell of ozone given off by exposed, live electrical cable. Lani' had smelled this particular ionization before, more times than she'd bothered to count and, if fact, more often than would be valuable to estimate. But those problems had been solved and so would this one be. She set to work, looking about now and then to see if she was being watched, and if anyone would approach. The best hope the Wanderlust had, she mused, was Soma's getting in touch with the Mithrandira quickly, and the Sciences and Operations Departments coordinating the transporter-mining. But Lani' would fix what she could with what was at hand while Soma did his own half the job. "This ship should be scrapped, in all honesty," Lanista caught herself saying aloud, but it didn't occur to her to censor herself. Anyone aboard probably already knew that. (Reply any) (Posted by Frank) (SS Wanderlust - Section 17 - ATac Ensign Ben Soma- 17:36) Ben was very surprised to find out that Screwhead had met his parents, even though he knew he shouldn't have been. It never occurred to him that his parents probably knew most of the freighters crew on this ship as well as the remainder of the convoy. The fact that there may be video disks containing images of his parents tweaked his interest. “If it is possible I would like to obtain copies of the disks that contain my parents. They didn't make any video records, only what was captured on the bridge by the mission log monitors. Sadly those were lost when my parents encountered the Borg." Ben then nodded to the blue dwarf and said." Thank you for extending your condolences." (reply Screwhead) The attention then returned to business, ways around the neutronium were discussed and a replacement substance was rejected. Screwhead and Lanista talked about the problems facing the freighters engines and that the use of Anodyne relays was not possible. Lanista stopped and placed the blue dwarf on the deck and typed something into her PADD, which she then passed to Ben while saying, "Screwhead, I know my way around an engine compartment. Why don't you take my colleague here forward - or in whichever direction you’re hiding your comm array. He'll need to contact our ship." Ben decided to read what was on the PADD while Lanista kept Screwhead occupied, it read, "Soma, We can potentially acquire some neutronium by using the Mithrandira's transporters as mining tools. New Eden's sun may contain enough of the element and, after we've rescued these people from Paradise, I'm sure they won't have any use for their old star. Please coordinate with Sciences, to scan for the presence of neutronium within the stellar core, and with Ops, to set up the transporters as mining/refinery equipment. We can fabricate the new parts aboard Mithrandira, and beam them over to the Wanderlust. Lani'" Using the transporter as a mining tool was an idea that never would have crossed his mind, thank god he never decided to pursue a career as an engineer. It was not an idea he had ever heard of before but he assumed that it was possible, at least in theory. The risks to the Mithrandir would of course be great, increased radiation exposure for the crew, and there was a great risk that the transporter could cause a solar flare that could cause extensive damage to the ship or possibly destroy it. "Our power source is spiking, Cloudwalker. So without protecting them against the surges, we can't use anodyne relays. As for a replacement for Neutronium, don't you think that we tried? Ben turned off the PADD and turned to Screwhead, he didn't like leaving Lanista to fend for herself but the information contained in the PADD had to be relayed to the Mithrandir, as well as his suspicions about the Wanderlusts ship master Sean. Lanista was a formidable opponent for anyone, Ben included. Weighting the risks and benefits he decided to follow the ACEO's lead. Turning to Screwhead he said, “Lead the way." Then Ben let his curiosity get the better of him." Tell me Screwhead, what do you recall about my parents?" (reply Screwhead/Lanista) (posted by Milo) (USS Mithrandir - Deck 2, Sickbay CMO Office Ensign Ava McGregor - 2133) "Doctor McGregor, I presume. "Anything to drink?" "No Sir, I'm fine at the moment." Ava watched the CMO get himself something from the replicator as she settled herself in the chair, relaxed but exuding as air of attentiveness. "I'm sure you've met our captain, ensign, and I will say that this is not going to be as formal I hope." ~I hope so too~ Ava thought. "There’s only 6 medical staff on board 2 doctors, two nurses and two technicians. The LMH is here as well, and R&D says we can't turn it off. Now, I don't know about your transcripts, but the Mithrandir will be a place that suits research work. But I am getting ahead of myself." Attentive nodding on Ava's part as she silently agreed. "Our current mission is a humanitarian one we are to escort colonists away from one planet and re-site them to a more viable area. Therefore medical services will be required as we uproot colonists including hospitialised patients. As the Starfleet vessel, we are the ones with the access to the best care. What are your first thoughts on how we deal with this, doctor?" "The captain has order me to set up triage on the freighters that will be carrying the colonists and to cobble together functional sickbays on each that will be capable of servicing two thousand and odd colonist per freighter...in two days." The magnitude of what she was about to undertake hit Ava, ~I’m going to have to get a really early start in the morning~ "It looks like our mission will not allow us to rest, confident in the fact that 6 medical personnel is too much for such a small vessel." "Perhaps if all six of us were qualified physicians I would agree with that sir." Ava Smiled, "Regardless of how the LMH has been programmed, you are the most experienced medical officer on board. A lot rests on your shoulders."  (Reply CMO)  Ava Nodded, "May I ask sir if you will be coordinating with the CMO on New Eden?" (Reply CMO) "I see sir, I plan on getting an early start myself. Once I have a handle on what will be required I will be heading to the hospital myself, I think it would be advisable to try and get most of what we'll need equipment wise from there." A conference call is set up for 2200 hours tonight. You’ll be expected to be in the call. With such a time limit, I would expect that we will have a minimal downtime until the mission us underway.” "I see sir, I plan on getting an early start myself. However, I want you to talk to engineering and get replicator schematics for transfer biobeds, and see if we can produce at least 3 extra for each transport. I am going to recommend that the holodeck be used as a medical ward during the transport,” (reply, room for more) Nymes looked at his new ACMO, before nodding. “Dismissed, doctor, get acquainted with sickbay, and I want to see you in here at 2200 hours for this conference call.” (reply) (posted by GC) (USS Mithrandir - Deck 2, Sickbay CMO Office -Ensign Ava McGregor - 2136) "Indeed. However, I want you to talk to engineering and get replicator schematics for transfer biobeds, and see if we can produce at least 3 extra for each transport. I am going to recommend that the holodeck be used as a medical ward during the transport," ~Fifteen extra biobeds in two days? Engineering are going to have a hairy fit.~ Ava thought even as she said, "I'll get right on that first thing in the morning and I’ll also draw up a preliminary plan for the temporary ward." "Dismissed, doctor, get acquainted with sickbay, and I want to see you in here at 2200 hours for this conference call." Ava stood smartly and smiled "I'll be here sir," Before taking her leave with a satisfied smile and a bucket load of relief. The captain had told her to get something to eat and rest up but there was no way she was going to miss that conference call. Once done with the two cent tour of sickbay the young doctor still managed to grab time for a coffee and a Danish pastry. She was starting to wilt a bit, it had been a long couple of weeks to get here and now she had been thrown into the deep end. But was that not what part of being a Starfleet officer was about? Over the next coming days and weeks Ava now knew she was going to hardly have time to draw breath. ~I'm just going to have to keep my head down and get on with it.~ (USS Mithrandir - Deck 2, Sickbay, CMO's Office - CMO - Lt(jg) Dr Lewis Nymes - 2157) Nymes had spent a busy 20 minutes in communication with the liaison that had been supplied to the medical faculty, laying the ground work for changes in operations as the colony was transferred. A Professor Halgin was the leader of the colony’s medical teams, and as such was in high demand, given the current state of the colony’s health. Finally the call was patched through, just as the new ACMO paused in the doorway. "Sir, Who from New Eden will be in on the conference call?" “Perfect timing, doctor.” Nymes indicated the seat next to him, for ease of the video link. “Professor Halgin is just about to... there we go. Professor, I am Lieutenant Nymes, CMO of the Mithrandir, and this is Ensign McGregor.” “Pleased to meet you, I’m sure, what what.” The man was the stereotypical Englishman, walrus mustache and all, and his very demeanour suggested tweed, even if his actual wardrobe did not. Nymes paused, but continued. “We are of course happy to help in the safe transfer of the colonists to the new site. Are there any medical cases we should be ready for?” Halgin tapped a few commands out on the desk, and then answered, almost woodenly. “We have currently 120 patients in various medical facilities planetside. The majority of these are Accident and Emergency attendees after the most recent quake, but we have 6 patients currently in critical care services. Further to this, we have one primagravida at term, with no complications if having to leave one’s planet is not a complication. Projections put our colony at 30 pregnancies that could deliver during the transfer, but this is a secondary concern after the immediate wellbeing of our critical patients.” Nymes looked across to his junior, allowing her to answer if she wanted to. (reply McGregor) (posted by GC)  (USS Mithrandir - Deck 2, Sickbay CMO Office -Ensign Ava McGregor - 2158) Ava paused in the entrance to the CMO's office, he was deep in concentration. She politely knocked on the door frame before entering. "Sir, Who from New Eden will be in on the conference call?" (reply CMO) (posted by Jodie) (USS Mithrandir - Deck One, FO's Quarters - FO Cmdr Olorin Okita - 2200) Olorin sat crosslegged on his zabuton at his table.  He was reviewing some reports when he noticed that they had received two new crew members.  They had arrived shortly after the Mithrandir had arrived at New Eden, but he had been busy and not noticed the arrival of the shuttles. Taking a sip his cup, he placed the padd down and said, "Computer prepare recording." [Ready to Record] "To: Ensign Ava McGregor From: Commander Olorin Okita Welcome aboard Ensign, please join me tomorrow at my office at 0700 hours." "Computer, end record and send to Ensign McGregor." said Olorin, as he took another sip from his cup. [Acknowledged] "Computer prepare recording." he said putting his cup down and checking his schedule. [Ready to Record] "To: Ensign Elith Rejal From: Commander Olorin Okita Welcome aboard Ensign, please join me tomorrow at my office at 0730 hours." "Computer end recording and send to Ensign Rejal." Olorin said, as he finished his drink and placed it back onto the table. [Acknowledged] Olorin finished a little more paperwork before walking over to his futon and turning in. (USS Mithrandir - Deck 2, Sickbay, CMO's Office - ACMO - Ensign - 2205) Nymes looked across to his junior, allowing her to answer if she wanted to. While the Professor was briefing them Ava was making notes on a PADD, lucky for her she caught the CMO's direction. "Professor, I estimate we can take over care of your critical patients within the next 36 hours. It would be appreciated if we could be kept up to date with any changes in their condition." "Of course of course, our head of ICU Dr Maxwell will work closely with your goodselfs." Ava smiled, "It can be a very anxious and frightening experience giving birth for the first time, please professor, if your primagravida would be more comfortable I'm sure we can accommodate her for the birth here." "Very kind I’m sure. I will make sure she is given that option." A voice off screen said something that neither of the doctors caught. The professor frowned rubbing his ear and nodded, "Thank you my dear, much obliged." Ava just had time to exchange a puzzled look with the Chief as the professor cleared his throat. "I've been rather remiss, my apologies lieutenant, I’ve been kindly reminded to inform you that one of our critical care patients is in a fact a confirmed case of Reginares." (Reply CMO) The professor seemed to slip into teaching mode as he asked Ava, "Have you come across it young lady?" "No Sir, I’ve only read about it." Ava replied with a slight shake of her head, “A rare autoimmune disorder that results in the degradation of biosynthesis, assembly and postranslational modification of all four subtypes of collagen within the human body. It is thought to be severely exacerbated by transporter beam technology." "Indeed! Exellent! I see teaching standards at Starfleet medical are as unwavering as ever." Ava was not overly sure if the professor thought that to be a good or bad thing. He hung his coat on the wall and picked up the fish food and fed the fish in a small pond in the opposite corner with a waterfall.  The fish darted back and forth as the flakes fell downward. "If wishes were fishes." murmured Olorin to himself as he replaced the fish food. Next he went to the replicator to get a drink and then took his seat on the floor to start his work and await his first visitor. (Reply McGregor, Rejal, Any) (posted by Kaweo Kanoho) (USS Mithrandir - Transporter room one, deck two - Ensign Ava McGregor  - 0650) Ava stepped off the transporter pad and glanced at the time on the PADD that she carried. 0650hrs. Not enough time to get freshened up before her meeting with the FO. The young doctor wrinkled her nose, suspiciously sniffing the arm of her uniform as she left the transporter room. Maybe it was her imagination but she was sure the odor of those freighters still lingered on her. With each freighter her heart had sunk a little further. The five Tarellian class transports were essentially the same deck for deck. But there sickbays were in varying stages of upkeep.  And the bio beds, well, there were not exactly up to Starfleet spec. ~Two days? Sleep is going to be out of the question then.~ Studying her PADD in the turbo lift Ava ran over again the list of things needed and to be done on each freighter to bring the medical facilities up to a standard where they would not break under the pressure of looking after two thousand plus instead of a crew of forty. After the meeting with the FO, Ava was planning on tracking down someone from engineering and hitting them with the requests for the fifteen bio beds. ~That ought to be fun.~ Reaching the FO's office with time to spare Ava stopped and slipped the PADD under one arm. She snatched a few moments to straighten her uniform and smoothed back the blonde strands that had escaped her normal neat Bun in her exploration of the freighters. ~Fingers crossed this meeting goes a lot smoother than the one I had with the captain yesterday~  Ava thought as she pressed the chime waited for the command to enter and did just that. And stopped, totally taken aback at the office she now found herself in. It was unexpected and so full of personality Ava could not help but smile as she presented herself to the FO, "Good morning Commander Okita, Ensign Ava McGregor reporting as ordered." (Reply Okita) (Posted by Jodie) (USS Mithrandir - Deck One, FO's Office - FO Cmdr Olorin Okita - 0655) Olorin was reading a report when the ennunciator sounded. "Enter," he said, putting down the padd and looking up at the door. The doors slid open to admit a young Ensign in blue. He rose to his feet and smiled.  "Good morning, Ensign.  You must be Ensign McGregor." he said, as he bowed slightly in her direction. (Reply McGregor) "Please have a seat," he said, indicating the zabuton across from him. ~Hmm she does not appear well rested,~ he noted, as he walked over to the replicator. "You look like you could use a bit of breakfast, Ensign." he said. (Reply McGregor) "I hope you will indulge me and allow me to select something." he said, with a grandfatherly smile. (Reply McGregor) Olorin ordered their breakfast and the replicator sparkled while it produced it. He picked up the tray and placed it on the table, before taking his seat.  He placed the various plates and cups before its respective diner.  Taking one final look, he nodded and put the tray to the side.  He gestured towards the food and urged, "Please eat.  When you're young you think you can live forever on air and energy." He put his hands together in ritual before picking up the bowl of hot miso soup.  He breathed in the salty soup's smell, which warmed him.  He sipped and replaced it before him. "So, Ensign, I understand you are newly arrived.  You look as if you have pulled an all nighter." commented Olorin, as he picked up the bowl of rice and with his chopsticks began to take a piece of fish. He sarcastically added, "I'll save that for the memoirs." Morgan figured that was fair enough, not everyone wanted to talk about their past. Cardassians, in Morgan's experience, seldom volunteered information about themselves. He decided not to force the matter and said, "Maybe I'll get to read those memoirs sometime." "Rest assured, I'm not a spy for the Obsidian Order. If I was, I probably won't be on this freighter right now." "Yeah, you'd be setting off bombs in Starfleet Headquarters." Williams piped up. "Nothing so obvious, Mr. Williams." Williams looked back and shook his head. "Seems like Mr. Williams does not trust you." Morgan said." Freighter crews are a little more xenophobic then the rest of the Federation population, they don't have our resources and are sometimes targeted by pirates for their cargo, or at times just for target practise. "Thank you." ~There goes the polite method.~ "Now, then, Mr. Randell, shall we begin?" Morgan nodded to Elith as he approached the console indicated by Mr. Williams, "Let’s dig in."
