He had hoped it would intrigue his friend; anything to help him stay focused and upbeat. "Good God, Bob, are you sure we're not looking at some sort of classified materials here?" Bob gave his friend a wry smile and replied very quietly, "Well... a fair question that. Ah did a bit of checking before ah even asked Danny aboot the files. Tis' mah understanding that since the technology is still in its incipient phase, and there are several competing lines of research going on -- the Marines are going through a competitive design process, seein' which contractor gets the bid -- that its nae /technically/ classified, though ah suppose it had ought tae be. Science is supposed tae be neutral... but we've seen it twisted right enough haven't we?" "Still, just in case, we should probably keep this data secured. Especially if it could have some applications concerning the Marine Armored BDUs" Bob considered that a moment. It was, a wholly sensible and reasonable suggestion. "Aye sir... perhaps we should. Ah'll encrypt it 'eyes only' for the CEO, that'll gie us both access tae it." "Oh and that brings me to something else." There was a slight pause before he continued. Matthew brushed a lock of his hair out of his face as he spoke. "I'm going to resign my position as CEO of this ship, which means that you're going to be taking the position full time unless you tell the captain otherwise." Lorimar slumped... or more correctly leaned heavily against the industrial replicator as he measured the impact of his friend's statement. ~CEO? Me? Why? Surely there are other engineers in the fleet....~ He found his voice after a moment. "Uhh... sir... surely ye cannae be serious? Have ye thought this through? After all, ah'm only temporarily assigned the spot; tis' yours when ye are ready tae take it back..." He trailed off, not sure what else he might say to dissuade the man who seemed quite resolute on the issue. "I've been offered a unique opportunity, Bob. To initiate my own projects, pursue my own engineering concepts and to work on special projects with the Advanced Theoretical Technologies Department." "Everything considered, I think it would be best for me, and all things considered for you as well. Your probably the best engineer I've ever seen, myself included. You have the gift and I would be remiss if I didn't bring it to the Captain's attention and step aside." Bob cupped his chin in hand and rubbed his fingers slowly back and forth as he let Matt's statement sink in. There were implications there that he didn't even wish to think of... to say nothing of the immense compliment he had just been paid. "Commander... Matt. "Another fact that we've been ignoring is you. You have the skill ability and love for this ship and it's crew that a Chief Engineer needs. If I had to choose between a man with experience and a man who loves his ship, the man who loves his ship will win every time. He would read it further in depth this evening, but wanted to have a rough idea of what it entailed. A planet on the verge of space travel, this didn’t come around every day. The survey was, indeed, incomplete in a few areas, no doubt they’d be filled in with this new, and perhaps subsequent reports. A report on an unknown species. Renora’s mind started to race thinking of a whole plethora of new herbs, medicines, folk remedies, rituals that lay just outside the Federation’s realm. The infusion of these peoples would be of great value to everyone. "Thank you Louis, I’ll finish this later." Dr. Tau said, closing the file. For the next twenty minutes or so, Dr. Fickett showed gave him the sickbay grand tour, showing Renora where everything was kept, as they chatted amicably, swapping professional trade talk. Afterwards, the Ensign excused himself, and headed, after lunch, to meet with the Asst. Chief of Operation. As he was leaving, Renora told Louis he’d like to play on the baseball team. It had been a brief meeting, though pleasant. Lt. Yalix seemed a nice enough fellow, one Renora could respect. When asked how he was finding the ship, Renora responded as "Initially a bit overwhelming, though that’s residing now", the Efrosian nodded with that look on anyone’s face, indicating a nostalgic memory. Renora was quite pleased when the Lieutenant assigned him a solo room. He was a very social person, just in smaller doses, and enjoyed having a place to be with his own thoughts. Especially after the non-stop life in the dorms back on Earth. He took the PADD from the Lt. and, having no pressing questions, left for the turbolift. ---------- (USS Boudicca - Captain's Ready Room - Holo-Marine Jose Rameriz & Captain Hotbuns - 1232 ) [Hologram Jose Rameriz requesting permission to speak to Captain Rivers] Susan looked a little surprised, but said, "Go ahead, Rameriz." As the holo-marine appeared on her terminal, she wondered why he wanted to speak with her. Jose looked unusually sombre, "Captains, I haves two tings on my mind." He blinked before Rivers could respond, "Nono, not the *usual* two tings! Ship tings." Susan surpressed a smile. "Continue, Mister Rameriz," she urged him, intrigued. "One, there's great big holes in yer computer core. I don't have access like I dids on da Rose, but its like someone ripped outs everything that could possibly be of interests to someone elses. Your security accesses are a mess, bunch of backdoors dat I suspect that Science hasn't founds out yet. I'd tell dem myself.. but I figures you might take my word a bit more seriously dan dey would.." He didn't even want to try to explain to a computer scientist that he was a self-aware hologram who had been uploaded without their knowledge or permission, and oh, by the way, the Boudicca's main computer was compromised, did you do it? Susan frowned. It sounded like this could be connected with the Ensign George kidnapping. She'd be interrogating the kidnappers herself soon, and she'd find out whether they were responsible or not. If they were, then it was all of a piece. If not... then things were worse than she'd suspected. "I will speak with Commander Sprak and Commander Stolev about this," she stated grimly. "It will need to be investigated thoroughly." "Let's just hopes they don't delete errant, handsome holograms." Rameriz said with his usual cheek. Susan said nothing. She had an inkling as to how Rameriz had shown up, and suspected he'd show up again even if deleted. "I don't likes to be thought of as a snoop or spy.. but, uhm.. You do know dat your kitty cat hasn't eaten in four days, right? Or at least, she hasn't accessed a replicator in that time.." Susan sighed, and felt guilty for not noticing herself before now. Come to think of it Shadow *had* been looking more tired than usual. "No, I didn't, Jose. Thank you for telling me. I will schedule an appointment for her with Sickbay immediately, and let them know the problem. I will personally make sure she attends. Hopefully they will know how to deal with it." "Chains her up and shoves food down her troat." He muttered and then sighed. "Maybe's you should have a counsellor dig around in dat furry head and figure outs why she's not takin' as good care of herself as she insists you does to yourself." Susan nodded. "I will see to it," she promised. "Hokay, tank yews for listening Cap'n!" He saluted, "I'll go backs to snoopin' the computer banks." Susan snorted. "Just keep away from the women's changing rooms and crew quarters," she said. "But thank you, Rameriz. You've been very helpful." The dark haired ensign had just stepped though the doors into what appeared to be a lounge of sorts. The more typical mess halls tended to be well lit, busy, and full of life. The exact sort of place that made it difficult for Renora to relax. This place, lights dimmer than the rest of the ship, more suited to a social drink than a meal; this was the type of place he enjoyed. He'd have to check this place out off-duty sometime... not tonight. Yesterday, in the runabout North Saskatchewan , he and his closest Academy friend/drinking buddy Dusty had said farewell, now for the first time in years no longer able to meet after work for a drink. The farewell had lasted hours upon hours, into the early morning, and now he had a headache. It would be weird, without Dusty around. Renora knew that, no matter how you cut it, he'd have to make new friends amongst his peers, a prospect that always made him slightly uneasy. "Yes Captain, I will make it a priority." he replied eagerly. His first official medical mission upon the Boudicca! He turned on is heel, and headed for the nearest console. He searched for a Yeoman Shadow to-Sretalles. He had heard of her race before, but only in passing. After reading relevant information, he signaled his own commbadge. He’d checked in with Captain Rivers as soon as he boarded, he met and introduced himself to First Officer Stolev on the bridge, and he had just come from meeting Dr. Fickett. This only left the Chief Counselor, Dorga ‘cha Nooras. Tau Renora walked though the hallways until he reached the door to his cabin. He confirmed his identity for the computer, and the security seal was broken. He went in. It wasn’t big but it was bigger than his dorm. A sleeping area, a kitchenette/replicator, a common area and a bathroom. There was a port which he would leave open to space. Something about the rush of passing distant stars, and the light patterns that played on the walls. He tossed the PADD onto the bed, and had his belongings teleported in. He then brought up a copy of the CMO’s report, this would make for interesting reading later. Finally, he signaled his commbadge. "Lt. Nooras, this is Ensign Tau Renora, ACMO. Fortunately it hadn't taken to long since she had been fairly quiet as far as therapy or consult sessions went. At 1300 hours she'd had an appointment with a crewman who was having severe nightmares that subsequently had caused him to be afraid of falling asleep, which was giving him problems with his work. She had put him under with hypnosis in order to see if she could get to the cause(s), and made sure that he'd woken feeling refreshed, as if he'd slept deeply for many hours. Please come to my office in the Counseling Department, the door will be open so there will be no need to announce your arrival." Fifteen minutes would give Dorga plenty of time to look up his files and records. Stopping at the replicator for another cappuccino, Dorga was soon at her desk and reading the information about Tau Renora, noting that he was an ACMO she was particularly interested in his medical history, particularly his paternal family history, which showed he had a possibility of developing a permanent degeneration of brain synapses, memory and emotive, though it did say it didn't affect humans less than 60 yrs. old. She thought that might mean three things for the young Mr. Tau. Either he'd succumb to it at age 60+ or, being a hybrid like herself, he could also get it at an earlier age or, hopefully, he wouldn't get it at all. She had just finished reading up on the young man when he walked in to her office. "Hello Mister Tau, please take a seat." Dorga told him, "I hope you find your quarters to be adequate and I'm sure that Dr. Fickett and his people are glad to have you aboard." Having finished her coffee she stood up to get another refill. "Are you here on official business or just to get acquainted?" Tau Renora smiled, for two reasons. First, it seemed the replicators were programmed with Bajoran food. Not overly surprising, considering the heritage of the Captain, but still a pleasant discovery for himself. Second, having served alongside a few Klingons during his time with the Maquis Youth, the half-Vulcan before him was downright friendly and jovial. Renora was confident however, that with the right 'encouragement', she could be as brutal as any warrior. This is not a theory he wished to test personally. "A little of both." Dr. Tau responded, setting down his tea on his knee. "I will be trying to go around meeting everyone aboard, as my work will be aided if I can establish a certain comfort level and familiarity before any medical need arises. Though I must confess, I was directed here by the Asst. Chief of Operations, as standard new arrival procedure on a ship." The Second Officer nodded, as if she had expected a similar answer. "I know it's early yet," she began, "But I'm sure you already have a feeling about the ship and her crew, especially those you will work with. Tell me what you think?" "The ship is impressive. This may be a new top of the line design for Starfleet, but as far as the Maquis goes, this is above and beyond anything I could even imagine. I'm sure I shall not be at want for anything while I am here." Renora added, intending to refer only to supplies and equipment, though halfway through his sentence he realised that currently, he WAS at want for something: a buddy to drink with and chat with after work. He decided he would send Dusty Finnegan, his Academy drinking buddy, a subspace letter later this night detailing his first day aboard. "The crew, those of whom I've met, has gone out of their way to help me fit in, and the commanding staff so far seems quite approachable and forward. I haven't yet had much time for meeting the crew though, what with introducing myself to all the COs, in fact, I think in the last five hours, this is the first time I've had a chance to breathe." He chuckled. "Though I don't think I'm done running around yet. I still need to find out about any Junior Officers events, read a survey about a brand new species, and now write a letter. Plus my quarters." He took a gulp of his tea, now slightly cooler. A least his hangover was subsiding. "Then you may as well relax a little longer, it sounds like you'll be busy for a couple of days just doing that, and I have an open door policy, the only time it is closed is if I am in a therapy session. As for meeting *everyone* aboard, with 448 souls aboard you may find it taking you a very long time." Dorga did a swift calculation as the Vulcan in her was curious to know. "In fact if you gave each of them ten minutes of your time, it would take you 186 days and 16 hours working around the clock. However, you will get acquainted with many in approximately one month when annual physicals are done. That is always a busy time for the medical department and for myself as I must do psychological evaluations as well." Seeing that he had almost finished his drink, Dorga offered him another. Her quarter doors didn't open when she approached them. Shadow poked the door with a claw and it firmly remained closed. Now what? She pushed the chime and wasn't particularly surprised to see a hostile roommate stick her face out. "Oh. YOU. You've been assigned new quarters. I shoved your stuff over there already." The woman withdrew back into the room and told the door to close. Shadow considered sticking a body part in the way to prevent the rude closure, but what would be the point? (USS Boudicca - Crewman's Quarters - Crewman Shadow to Sretalles - 1847) Shadow stood in the middle of the room in awe. She had her own window! She could hear the thrum of the engines, and bestest of all, instead of where the bunks should be, there was a hammock! She could lie on it and watch the stars! She could listen to the heartbeat of the ship AND the song of the heavens! There had been an apology from an officer about how they were very sorry, that it was the best they could do, that space was a premium on the ship. She could only wonder what better would be? Her own space, her own hammock, her own view, and songs to sing her to sleep! She could tell her belongings, those in storage, and those in not, had *not* been delivered by She-who-was-not-worthy-of-a-name. He had actually done the work already, a few stolen moments at a time. Sadly his time was at a premium of late, and he had nearly forgotten this very important task. He detoured by his office, picked up a small bunch of nearly assembled parts, a toolkit, and he was on his way. He found himself in the crew berthing area... he consulted his PADD quickly to ensure he was in the right place, then pressed the door chime. "Yeoman Shadow? Tis' Lieutenant Lorimar. Ah'm sorry tae trouble ye at this late hour, but may ah come in for a moment?" (Reply Shadow iyw, assuming yes) Bob entered the cabin and resisted the urge to look around. Instead, he focused on the Siaovan occupant before him. He felt a bit awkward calling on her at this late hour, but he had to use the time he could manage to find, and didn't wish to put this off any longer. He managed a smile at her and found his voice. "Again ah apologize for the intrusion, but ah'm on an errand from Captain Rivers," he began by way of explanation. 'Ah'll nae bother ye any longer than ah must, if ye hae no objections ah've a quick equipment installation tae take care of." (Reply Shadow iyw) He opened his toolkit and turned to the task at hand. Selecting the appropriate piece of equipment from what he had brought along, he picked a likely spot high on the bulkhead and began to attach it. He cast a glance over his shoulder at Shadow and continued his explanation. "Captain Rivers has a very high opinion of ye lass... ah'm sure ye know that. This is a special wee accoutrement that she had me put together for ye. Ah'm sorry it's taken so long, but ah had tae wait until ye were assigned yer own quarters a'fore ah could install it. As ah said, it should only take a few minutes." He turned back to the bulkhead where he had affixed a small piece of equipment just smaller than a standard tricorder. Reaching into the small pouch he picked out another very similar appearing piece of equipment and attached it just under the first. They snapped together quite neatly as though they were designed to be attached in such a fashion (they had, in fact been built with just that in mind) One more piece, smaller than the first two, plugged as neatly into a small data port on top of the main unit. He then opened an access panel in the bulkhead and tied into the EPS tap there. With a touch of an activation stud on the main unit, a tiny green telltale illuminated. He scanned the assembly briefly with his tricorder, replaced the bulkhead panel and turned back to face Shadow with a smile on his face. "There, that's done it." He gestured at the computer interface on her desk and explained. "Tis' a holoemitter unit. It takes its power from the ships' supply, but also has a self contained backup so it doesnae cut off when the ship goes tae alert status. Ah've done some basic programming wie it... ye can access the system either from your interface there, or by voice command keyed tae you. The Captain tells me yer folk sleep in trees... an' she wished for ye tae feel at home. Ah've given ye a pretty broad selection of trees from the database; ah dinnae ken what type o' tree ye'd fancy. Ye can, of course use the setup tae alter your quarters tae look much different than they are... yer own wee holodeck, essentially. There are a few limitations of course, based on processor capacity of the self contained unit.
