His father had just delivered some medical supplies to a colony and was returning home. The crew was looking forward to getting back to Earth and having a few days off, everyone had plans to visit family or friends. Ben was looking forward to spending a little time with his parents away from the regular duties of the freighter, his father had promised to take him fishing and his mother laughed saying they were more likely to catch a cold then any fish. Ben was looking forward to it anyway, he liked getting away with his father. Ben was heading to the bridge to check on their progress, the freighter wasn’t the fastest in the cosmos but she got the job done. His father once told him that he didn’t like moving to fast, it didn’t give one a chance to enjoy the journey, Ben was surprised to find that he actually agreed. He entered the bridge and strode over to the CONN, his father was sitting in the centre seat going over a few reports and looked up when Ben entered. “Another couple hours Benny,” He said, “then we’ll dock and break out the fishing gear. I can hear those salmon jumping now, can almost feel them tugging against my arms. How about you?” “I can’t wait to get some of that fresh air.” Ben replied. “Feel the sun on my face and the water flowing over my waders.” His father laughed and nodded. “If that last hole had been any deeper I would have had to have someone beam you out of the river.” “It was your idea to go to that spot.” Ben said with a smile. “Chose a shallower river this time.” His father laughed as he stood up and walked over to stand beside his son, placing a hand on Ben’s shoulder he said. “You have no idea what it means to your mother and I that you decided to come along with us, we know there’s a lot more you could be doing with your time.” “There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.” Ben said meeting his fathers gaze. Suddenly it dawned on him that his parents were dead, assimilated by the Borg when he was much younger. They had been gone almost ten years. “Dad, “ Ben began. “What are you doing here?” His father looked at him with surprise. “What do you mean Son?” “The Borg assimilated the freighter and the crew almost a decade ago.” Ben answered. His father removed his hand and stepped back. “You want me to leave Son?” Before he could reply his father faded from sight, Ben reached out to stop him but it was too late. The freighter faded and he found himself alone outside the Hyperion. Flames could be seen inside the structure, people were coughing from the thick smoke bellowing from within. He looked around to see who was with him, he remembered being there with someone. They had arrived together and found the Hyperion in flames, they entered and pulled the people out, Ben looked down to see his uniform smudged with soot and burnt in places. He smelt the smoke on his clothing and suddenly began coughing, he received his fair share of the smoke. Suddenly he heard screams from within and realized that his companion was still inside looking for survivors. Sanok, that’s who he was with, a Vulcan who served on the same ship as a security officer. They just finished a mission and were awaiting reassignment, they volunteered to patrol Geneva in their free time. Sanok was now trapped inside the inferno and Ben had to try and get him out, his friend must have gotten disorientated or stuck in some falling debris. His screams were becoming more violent and Ben called out that he was coming. Ben ran in and followed the direction of his screaming friend, it was hard to see through the smoke and the heat was unbearable. His friend would not survive much longer Ben had to hurry if he was to save him. Sanok continued screaming and Ben continued running towards the screams but didn’t seam to get any closer. He heard the structure crack and grown from the fatigue, it was getting hotter and the smoke was getting thicker. Suddenly something hit him in the back and pinned him to the floor, Ben tried to push it off but it was to heavy. Soon he too was screaming and he slowly burnt to death. He screamed for his friend saying he was sorry. The smoke began to over take him and he began to black out. He fought to stay conscience and fought to get free but it was futile. Just when he couldn’t stand it anymore the Hyperion dissolved and he found himself on a trail on Axtis III. Ben was surrounded by people from the town nearby, they were screaming about the murder of Kavol. They accused Ben for his murder and proceeded to beat him up. The mob screamed for justice and screamed that he be strung up for his crime. Someone produced a piece of rope which was tossed over the branch of a large tree. One end of the rope was tied around the trunk and the other end was tied in a crude noose. An Andorian approached Ben and pulled him to his feet. “Now pink skin you’ll pay for what you have done.” Ben tried protesting but the Andorian hit him in the face silencing any further protests from him. He was lifted up by several of the larger mob members, another climbed up on a companions back to slip the noose around Ben’s neck, drawing it tight with a large grin on his face. Someone else bound Ben’s hands and feet to prevent any struggle that may be left in him. Once they were satisfied they let him drop, he could feel the rope cutting into his neck as the rope tightened. His breathing became increasingly difficult and his vision began to blur. At the limit of his sight he could she a large Nausican holding a Bajoran woman by the shoulder, forcing her to watch. Tears flowed from her eyes and the Nausican grinned, or at least as much as a Nausican could grin. Ben could now longer breath, he struggled against the rope but his attempts were futile. A name entered his mind and he tried to speak it but could not. He wanted to call out to her, he wanted to call out to Marah. As he hung there dying he thought he could hear someone speaking to him, talking about samurai. The voice was describing ritualistic suicide, the voice belonged to his friend Sanok. (reply none) (posted by Milo) (USS Mithrandir, Conference Room, Doctor Jorsad Ari - 19.37) "Does anyone else want something while I'm up?" asked BJ and when everyone else had requested their beverage or lack of want, Jorsad simply held up his hand to indicate he fine but then he did add after careful thought of what had been said already, "Gorde'an? I am not familiar, is that race, species or something else? I had assumed they were humanoid...? Anything you can tell me will assist us?" he asked once more, feeling a little bit out of the loop. If they were going to open these two 'people' up, Jorsad needed to know everything. (Reply from BJ, any) (USS Mithrandir, Conference Room, a2O/OPS BJ Stone - 1937.5) As BJ took orders for the replicator he heard Jorsad ask, “"Gorde'an? I am not familiar, is that a race, species or something else? I had assumed they were humanoid...? Anything you can tell me will assist us…" “Ahh, Gorde’ans ¬ I took the liberty of looking them up when I was assigned the Away Team. I too had not head of their race before. They lost their home planet due to a natural disaster some time back. The species have gathered in small groups within the Federation. They are apparently searching for a new home planet to call their own. The brief info I read implied that their average height is about two meters and that they tend towards a thin and light body shape. Apparently they come in three general skin colors ¬ pink, a light-blue color, and a cream color. Strictly based on their body style it would appear to me that they are descendent from avian stock ¬ and I base that solely on the fact they seem to have a beak-like snout and from observing the hands of the bodies they seem to have the remnants of talons. (USS Mithrandir - Conference Room ¬ Lieutenant jg Sanok - 1940) After doing his security duties regarding the bio lab and the autopsies, and after spending a short time visiting Ben in sickbay, Sanok proceeded to the conference room for a mission debriefing. Stepping inside, he politely nodded to everyone present and took an empty seat, placing a PADD he was carrying onto the table. The captain and FO weren't there yet, so Sanok quietly listened as the others talked. (Reply any) (Posted by Bob) (USS Mithrandir, Conference Room, Doctor Jorsad Ari - 19.41) "Well, I think I am going to leave you to debrief. Unless you have any further instructions for me?" said the CMO as started to stand up to leave. Unless you have any further instructions for me?", said the CMO as started to stand up to leave. “Well, we did have problems scanning the bodies with the tricorders,” BJ said as he watched Jorsad rise from his seat. “Lt. Sanok has some security concerns regarding us bringing the bodies aboard. We transported them to Bio Lab one specifically because of the high containment fields available in the lab.” (Reply Jorsad, any) (posted by Mike Barrett) (USS Mithrandir, Conference Room, Doctor Jorsad Ari - 19.42) Jorsad nodded, he had the information he needed regarding the Gorde'ans, they sounded colourful to say the least but he began to head out of the room before adding, "Ensign Serranta, when you are done here, I want you to join me in the bio-lab.", he said and after another moment had passed, he left the room. (USS Mithrandir, Bridge, Doctor Jorsad Ari - 19.44) Walking towards to the lift, he took a quick look at Bridge and made a note of the First Officer heading for the conference room, with little more than a tilt of his Cardassian head, he entered the lift and towards the two guests waiting for him. (USS Mithrandir - Conference Room - FO Cmdr. Olorin Okita - 1945) Olorin walked into the conference room quickly. He had been dealing with an issue which had delayed him and he was not looking forward to the eventual solution. He also had been notified by the captain to start the briefing without him, so he had cut his other meeting short and headed for the conference room. The doors slid open and he nodded to the assembled officers, as he took his seat. "Sorry for the delay. The captain has asked me to begin the debriefing," said Olorin. "Lieutenant?" (Reply Stone, Any) (posted by Kaweo Kanoho) (USS Mithrandir - Conference Room ¬ a2O/OPS BJ Stone - 1946) The doors slid open and Olorin nodded to the assembled officers, as he took his seat. "Sorry for the delay. The captain has asked me to begin the debriefing," said Olorin. "Lieutenant?" “Aye, Sir,” replied BJ, as he took a last sip of coffee and placed the cup on the table before him. “Well sir, we went aboard the small yacht to place the Navigation beacon, see if we could get the ship’s logs, and give the yacht a cursory examination. We found two dead Gorde’an aboard the yacht and brought them aboard due to problems examining the bodies with our tricorders. The ship was critically low on power. In order I would invite the Mr. Korn, Mr. Rejal, and Ms. Serranta to share with us their discoveries, followed by Mr. Sanok to share with us his impressions. Mr. Sanok also stopped by the bio lab to check on the containment fields after we completed the decon process.” (Reply All) (posted by Mike Barrett) (USS Mithrandir - Conference Room - Ensign Jynea Kreung - 1947) "Sorry for the delay. The captain has asked me to begin the debriefing," said Olorin. "Lieutenant?" "Aye, Sir," replied BJ, as he took a last sip of coffee and placed the cup on the table before him. Jynea only half-listened to the repeat of the briefing, instead deciding to concentrate on the body language and unspoken interchanges of the crew. She was also amused that someone could walk in and say the same thing as her and have it happen because they happened to be older and have more pips. Maybe she shouldn't have done her doctorate on what would lead a race to 'plug in' and become the board but on military mentality! She probably should have signed up with a private survey company, she'd probably trip over rules and regulations less, but then, it was Starfleet who'd given her life and opportunity, she should at least try and repay. She was starting to think, though, she was *never* going to get her lieutenant's pips. It wasn't as if she had a *big* ambition, she just wanted junior lieutenant before she retired some time in the next fifty years.. but it wouldn't surprise her if she died an ensign. She didn't really seem to have the drive and zeal that most of the officers around her did. (Replies any) (Posted by Lorna) (USS Mithrandir, BioLab, Doctor Jorsad Ari - 20.02) Doctor Serranta has joined the Cardassian in the lab and it was just in time, Jorsad had made the first incision, not on the chest but on the side of the knee. The energy signatures had piqued his attention; this was going to a mystery he was going to solve. "Great, Doctor, thanks for coming down... can you assist me with the microprobe? I am going to need it in a moment.", he said returning to his work. (Reply Serranta) He paid no attention to the hologram, what was it doing? Fooling around? Apparently not... it fluttered and went offline, for a moment and then returned to normal, but laying down. "... hmmm this is an awful mess. You know let me clean this up first..." it said and Jorsad looked up and said to the computer, "Mute hologram." he said shaking his head. "Doctor, did you see what happened? When I attempted to retrieve this power unit from our corpse... hmmm.", he said and took the probe once more and carefully extracted the unit. "Ensign, pass me that containment unit.", he said and carefully placed the probe and the small artifact inside. (Reply Serranta) "Now, let's get a look at this." he said passing the tricorder to her, "I can't make any sense of the engineering but interesting is the biological part of this device.", he said and took another tricorder and he now had the ability to scan the body. "Unmute.", he said and pointed to the LMH, "I want you to scan the Gorde'an, I want to know how he died and when, down the minute... and please..." he raised a hand, "Keep the chat to yourself.", he said and moved to the second Gorde'an. (Reply LMH) Jorsad planned to perform the same procedure on the second corpse, he didn't know what it meant but as soon as he both items out of their hosts, it would be a start. (Reply from Serranta, LMH, Any) (Posted by Anthony Keen) (USS Mithrandir - BioLab - LMH - 2005) "My Gods are you messy," said the LMH aloud, as he lay on the other biobed, twirling his cane absentmindedly. He was mostly disappointed that he had not been allowed to assist in the autopsy, as the pair of Star Fleet doctors worked on the medical mystery before them. First had been that queasy one, who had messed up the biolab. Then after she had cleaned up after herself, the other one entered and then proceeded to make an even bigger one. And to make it worse, he had been forbidden from helping them. "You know, someone could hurt themselves if they walked in here." he commented, his cane deflecting another flown tricorder. "Tsk, should I stand up, would that help?" he asked sarcastically, as he swung his legs off the table and sat up, his arms outstretched. "No? I can't imagine why." The room had gone silent as they seemed to be focusing on something. He hopped off the biobed to get a closer look. His hand brushed against the body as he got to the biobed. He scratched his arm as though it itched. Suddenly his matrix fluttered and he was shut down for a moment. In the next he was on the ground, blinking his eyes stunned. "Oh that was my fault," he said, in a soft voice. "Sorry about that. Did I hurt something?" (Reply Ari/Kyah) "Are you both okay? Did something happen?" he asked, as he got to his feet. "Please, let me check you both. It wouldn't do to have our two finest doctors injured." Leaving his cane on the floor, he began picking up tricorders to test them. "Hmmm this is an awful mess. You know let me clean this up first.." he said, as he piled tricorders in his arms. (Reply Jorsad, Serranta, Any) (posted by Kaweo Kanoho) (USS Mithrandir - Conference Room - FO Cmdr. Olorin Okita - 2015) Olorin sat listening intently as each officer gave their report. Mystery was something that seemed to seek out Star Fleet vessels and the Mithrandir was no exception. In certain ways with the smaller fleet, he was certain that they would probably stumble upon more of them as they did more with less. When the last officer spoke, Olorin said, "Excellent work all. Doctor Serranta, I'm sure Doctor Ari can use your assistance with discovering what happened to our new guests. Lieutenant Stone, please work with Mister Korn and Rejal on those logs. I shall brief the Captain. Update me as soon as your learn anything. Any questions?" (Reply Any at meeting) At the conclusion of the briefing, Olorin headed to the bridge to advise the Captain of their current status. ~At least no one disappeared or got hurt this time~ he thought, as he exited the conference room. (Reply Stone/any) (Posted by Frank) (USS Mithrandir - Hard2Port - Ensign Jynea Kreung - 2110) Jynea was, shock of shocks, running late. It wasn't as if she'd been stuck in her office or anything - she wasn't actually sure she *had* an office - it was just she'd been trying to remember whose idea this party had been and what the theme was. Every time she'd decided to just do a 'go as you are' her terminal had bleeped an incoming message. She'd then tried to load the message and she'd gotten a blank message. After seven times, she'd thrown up her hands in disgust, sent a notice to Ops to take a boo at it, and left her quarters. Jean shorts and a cotton candy pink tank top provided her camouflage for the evening. She'd put on sandals with a face. She preferred barefoot, but Captain Crankypants would probably toss the a PADD of rules at her. She wasn't quite sure footwear was mandatory off-duty, but why take the chance? He probably already had a huge list of things to grouch at her about. She'd though T'Vhor a pain in the keister when she'd first come on board, but boy.. what a challenge Captain Stakes was! He probably ate prunes three meals a day! She was surprised at the number of bodies already in the lounge, she wondered if it was the excuse to party or if the lounge was normally this busy. She'd gotten used to a hit or miss turn out for her Spectre events. Who knew a 18th century dress-up croquette tournament would be more popular than an ale tasting? She spotted BJ in the crowd and was starting to think this party was his idea, she certainly couldn't take the credit. She smiled to the strange faces and introduced herself to those who stood still long enough to be introduced to as she made her way to the bar. She gave Telleenal and Tommy both a friend grin and took the seat on the far side of Telleenal from Tommy, "Are you keeping Tommy out of trouble or helping him with his duty of making sure the bar doesn't float away?" she asked with a mischievous twinkle in her eye. I should warn you though – I’ve seen my dad spike a ball or two also – and he plays very good defense.” Telle paused as she caught sight of one of the holo security guards carrying a tray of drinks. The holo guard paused for a moment, bent over slightly and sneezed into his hand. He then rubbed his nose, wiped his hand on the rear of his pants, and then continued on his way to the bar with the tray of glasses and bowls he was carrying. The little scene seemed so weird… Telleenal looked back at Jynea to see her gazing towards some of the crew that were gathering to play a few songs. Seeing the musicians reminded Telle that her dad had her keyboard. “Umm!” Telle exclaimed as she pulled away from where Tommy was sitting on the bar. “My pops has my keyboard and it looks like everyone is getting ready to play a few songs. I need to scram,” she said by way of saying goodbye. “But plan on a game of volleyball,” Telleenal said to Jynea as she smiled and tossed a wave to Jynea. “And I’ll see you later after I get my jam on with pops,” Telle said to Tommy. He sipped from his cup as he considered the information before him. From his time as an operations officer, he was often fascinated how such simple minutiae kept a ship functioning smoothly. Small errors could lead to much larger problems that one would not imagine could have originated from such tiny errors. ~For want of a nail~ he thought, as he put the padd down and leaned back against the wall. He closed his eyes for just a moment when the enunciator sounded. Sighing, he leaned forward and said, "Come." The doors slid open to unleash a bounding ball of fur that shouted, "Commander, Commander, Commander!" Knowing better than to remain stationary, Olorin rose to his feet. "Yes, Montro?" he asked. "What are you doing here?!?" Montro asked excitedly. "Working, Crewman." he replied shortly searching for a quick way to the end of the conversation. "Should I be somewhere else?" "Yes, yes, yes!!!" Montro said loudly, his eyes looking straight up at Olorin's. ~I completely forgot.~ Olorin realized. "The PARTY!!!" Montro confirmed, as he grabbed Olorin's hand and proceeded to drag him to the party. Having spent a considerable amount of time with the Logren on the ship's initial flight to Geneva, Olorin resigned himself to his fate and allowed himself to be led out, as he grabbed his coat off the wall as they sailed out the doors. (USS Mithrandir - Hallway - aCEO Elith Rejal - 2138) ~Hm, I wonder how this party will turn out? This is the first time I've gone to one on this ship.~ Elith thought as he walked through the hallway, away from his quarters. He had changed into a casual Cardassian outfit, a maroon long-sleeved shirt with a simple design and brown pants, having heard that such casual wear was allowed. He still didn't like how his uniform fit and wanted to get into something more comfortable. ~I should really figure out a way to fix that damn uniform. It's been months now.~ As he walked, hands in pockets, he spied a female Bajoran crewman coming his way. ~Ah, it's that Bajoran woman I see occasionally. Haven't seen her in a while.~ He nodded a hello which she hesitantly returned. He last saw her shortly after the Cloudrunner's inaugural flight, which they were both on. That had certainly improved their non-existent relations, though they were miles away from friendly. At least, she was. ~I don't know why I have an interest in her, probably since I first saw her as soon as I first boarded the Mithrandir and noted the irony that the one of the first people I saw was a Bajoran.~ By this time, they had already passed each other. ~I hope I see her again, I'd like to get to know her. She doesn't seem the type to absolutely hate me based on my Cardassian heritage.~ (USS Mithrandir - Hard2Port - FO Cmdr Olorin Okita - 2140) The doors opened to reveal a lively scene. As soon as they entered, Montro released his hold on Olorin and promptly disappeared into the masses. No one seemed to notice his entrance and for that he was glad. He was pleased to see the crew mingling and relaxing. It was often easy to lose sight of the finer things in life. Realizing he had not eaten yet, he headed over to the bar to get some food and drink. (Reply Any) (posted by Kaweo Kanoho) (USS Mithrandir - Hard2Port - aCEO Elith Rejal - 2142) Elith entered the extremely populated bar, surprised at the amount of people in the room. ~Everyone on the ship must be here! Where did they all come from?~ He sidled over to the bar to order a kanar, not seeing anyone he knew along the way. While he waited, he looked around the room, spotting a few people he knew here and there. He also noticed the Commander sitting by himself some distance away, eating what appeared to be dinner. Receiving his kanar, he made his way to the man and upon reaching him said, "Good evening, Commander." With a slight smile, he added, "What brings you here?" (Reply Okita, any) (Posted by Matt Kirk)
