Little did I know then I would be aboard less than 3 whole days. The De'niS returned to spacedock on 01.11. De'nISSon is an interesting name for a Starfleet vessel. Ostensibly dedicated to exploration, this name in our tongue would mean something like To relieve interference with information. While I doubt the vessel was named with this in mind, it is ironic we returned to base with one-third of the starship missing â…” of De'nISSon being De'nIS, to interfere with information. That is what I told them during my 'debriefing.' The interrogating officer was apparently unsettled by my completely unintended implication that something nefarious had happened. I was dismissed from the debriefing without any further exchange with the officer. Of course, this combined with no official word from Higher Command has left me waiting for something to do. I hate waiting. Granted, Starbase Geneva has 10 gloriously oversized decks of Engineering. The starbase also has fully 20 decks devoted to drydock work. They are evidently sufficiently staffed, as I have not been approached to lend my considerable talents to their work. Thus, I have begun cataloging the inventories of spare parts on Geneva. It is lamentable just how many surplus supplies are stored in a less-than-serviceable condition. While these items are not garbage, I cannot see anyone electing to use them when perfect alternatives sit in storage next to them. I have taken the liberty of removing such items from storage. Initially, I merely placed them in an otherwise unutilized Auxiliary Craft Maintenance Bay (82 Gamma 5-8) and began to repair each object or subsystem individually. Then it dawned on me. There would be little point in perfecting these things unless they were to be used. A tool is useless unless it is put to some task at least once. So I decided to build a shuttlecraft. No. I decided to build a 'missioncraft' something of greater utility than a simple personnel transport craft. Fortunately, ACMB 82/G-5-8 has an industrial replicator already in it. I will be able to replicate parts that I cannot otherwise obtain. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mission: Interlude Stardate: 2408.01.14 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< (Starbase Geneva Deck 82, DryDocks/Docking Ports Ensign gn Lanista 0830) Notes to vavoy: Unfortunately, even in light of the recent 'civil war', there are seemingly few claimed war prizes at Geneva. As such, I must make use of materials at hand. The "Design Lineage" of the maQmIgh will be quite Starfleet in its general configuration. I will Klingonize it as parts become available… 1.3. General Overview PHYSICAL ARRANGMENT (Starbase Geneva Deck 82, DryDocks/Docking Ports - Ensign Lanista 2408.01.14.0900) Type: The maQmIgh is intended as a Light-to-Medium, Short-Range craft. At present, I have an idea how to make it warp-capable without acquiring nacelles and a conventional M/ARC. This came up during my Academy Final Exam. While I am less than pleased with the final exam I passed, but I feel as though it was a case of Krashandburni Maru I am anxious to see how viable the following may be... Class-V, -VII, -VIII, and IX probes are warp-capable. While the micro-engines of these would not be sufficient to provide for sustained warp travel, they could be used for warp speed bursts. Class-V's are only able to reach WF2. Class-VII's are even slower, but Class-VIII's and -IX's can reach Warp 9. Certainly I should be able to acquire the necessary components of just two Class-IX Probes. This most-desirable sort of probe has a M/AM warp field sustainer and an extended fuel supply for a duration of 2 weeks (at WF8). Two would give an endurance of a month. As Humans say, though, the more the merrier. These could be attached to external hardpoints like drop tanks on ancient atmospheric fighters. For more on Warp Propulsion Systems (WPS), see 5.0. The matter of non-warp propulsion is more easily solved. A conventional fusion-power impulse engine, and 4 or 6 reaction control thrusters should be more easy to come by. For more on Impulse Propulsion Systems (IPS), see 6.0. Accommodation: I see no reason to build the maQmIgh for more than one person me. In the event I get this thing spaceborne, I shall act as pilot and systems manager. I cannot imagine carrying passengers. Power Plant: I shall need 1, possibly 2, impulse driver engines. These are available in 500-, 750-, 800-millicochrane output. Granted, I would prefer the 800-mC output, but I will take what I can get. The 800-mC is that used in Type-18 Shuttlepods, and in Types 09-11 Shuttlecraft. Ideally, the maQmIgh will need 3-4 sarium krellide storage cells. Warp Drive I have discussed above. If the Drop Tanks method of using probe engines pans out, I shall devote no further thought to uprating this system. If possible, I would like to install aerodyne flight motors, as these will make the maQmIgh able to make planetfall more efficiently. Dimensions and Mass: As I am building the maQmIgh as time and parts permit, I have no idea what its eventual dimensions and tonnage will be. I am, however, relatively certain it will take up a hangar deck footprint smaller than that of a Danube-Class Runabout. Projected Length: 15.84m Projected Wingspan: 8m Projected Height: 2.84m Projected Mass: ~30 t Performance: Performance depends upon the drive systems appropriated. 500-mC IPS: Maximum Δ-v, 12,800 m/sec 750- mC IPS: Maximum Δ-v, 12,250 m/sec 800- mC IPS: Maximum Δ-v, 16,750 m/sec Class-IX Probe Warp Drive: projected performance will be less than WF8 with a duration of less than 30 days. Armament: While I am loathe to build an unarmed craft, I suspect TAC/SEC will pry their noses into my project if I attempt to acquire Starfleet weaponry. Therefore, if you send 1 B'rel Disruptor mount I will see to it that it is used with honor. Until then, I intend to outfit the maQmIgh with 4 microprobe launchers per side. These will be used with the Rapid-Bloom Offboard Microprobe Polyhedral-Deployment System [RBOMPDS] see 10.5 (below/later). Additionally, a turret will be mounted dorsally amidships. I plan to use this as the basis of a later test of a Multi-Purpose Armaments Turret, but for now it will suffice as a 360º-field-of-fire launch platform for the RBOMPDS. As the Starfleet stands down from a combative stance, there is an effective surplus of these materials. Using castrodium and neutronium will allow me to 'cut corners' with the SIF later. See 2.3. STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY FIELD SYSTEM. I would like to construct the secondary frame with interlaced baakonite, the honorable material used in the construction of betleHmey*. I can find no record of this metal being used in starcraft construction though I am anxious to try it. Unfortunately, there is no ready supply of baakonite here on Geneva. Under ordinary circumstances, terminium and polyduranide would be used for such construction. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mission: Interlude Stardate: 2408.02.18. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< (Starbase Geneva Deck 82, Auxiliary Craft Maiintenance Bay (82 Gamma 5-8) Ensign Lanista 2408.02.18.16.1640) Notes to vavoy: I have completed the main skeleton. With his internal clock, Sanok counted to fifty-nine seconds, then opened his eyes and sat up as straight as he could in the chair, his hands still securely bound behind him. "I have come to a decision." About ten seconds passed before the Voice spoke again. "And?"  The tone was irritated. "I will allow you to have the data crystal, but you must first tell me what is on it," said Sanok. "You're in no position to make demands," said the Voice. "I am a Vulcan.  We are known for our ability to resist very unpleasant methods.  I will be found eventually.  Are you willing to risk how long I will be able to resist?" The Voice sighed deeply.  At this point, Sanok was winning the psychological battle.  Clearly, whoever had captured him was facing a time limit, and not just the limit of Sanok being rescued.  He would need to continue stalling the use of very unpleasant methods. "This is your last chance." A figure dressed in black, with his face covered by a hood, stepped through the bright light, a device in one hand.  He pressed a button and an element began to glow. "I'm sure even Vulcans feel intense pain when a welding flame is moved all over their skin," said the Voice, still hidden by the light.  "My associate is looking forward to his work.  It's now or never.  Tell us the code to get into your room." "Montro," said Olorin with a growl.  "My apologies, Captain." Montro looked up at Olorin, who glared at him.  He shrunk back. Satisfied that the Logren would remain silent, Olorin straightened up.  The Captain's request brought a smile to him, while he quickly moved into action to keep the Logren from disgracing the ship any further.  While enthusiastic Olorin wondered how the Logren had survived quite this long, especially with the war.  The opportunity must have been terribly tempting. ~A man after my own heart.~ thought Olorin, as he said, "As you wish Captain, why don't we begin with Deck Three." (USS Mithrandir - Bridge - aCO Commander Olorin Okita and OO Crewman Montro - 1540) The tour complete, the group had returned to the bridge.  Montro returned to the OPS post to the left seat behind the command chairs in the center of the bridge. The Captain was asking the Lieutenant for her thoughts.  Olorin remained silent, not wanting to influence the junior officer's critique of his ship.  Well, his ship for the time being. When the Lieutenant had finished the Captain addressed Olorin. "Commander, you seem to have become strangely attached to this little fleeball of a ship. So what are you going to do if we take her away from you?" said Stakes. ~What?~ thought Olorin, confused about the situation. "I AM currently one First Officer short. Of course, depending on my decision to take her. Not a ship of the line? To be honest I don't think I have seen a ship which was LESS a ship of the line than this one. But perhaps if the Civil War taught us anything, it is that weapons do not create peace, nor do they maintain peace indefinitely. Perhaps it is prudent that we get the chance to try other ways." Olorin pondered what the Captain had said.  It didn't make sense to Olorin.  He excused himself and returned to the ready room. (USS Mithrandir - Ready Room - aCO Commander Olorin Okita - 1600) Olorin sat at his desk and leaned back, the chair facing the window. So Captain Arianna had decided to offer Captain Stakes command of the Mithrandir, if it met with his approval.  Olorin was surprised, especially when he went through Captain Stakes' service record. He now understood the comments that the captain had made about the size of the Mithrandir.  Captain Stakes was obviously used to ships of the line.  Would he want to serve with such a man? Olorin wasn't sure if he could serve as a first officer for any other captain.  He had seriously considered retiring.  He did not think any captain would want an old war horse like himself as his first officer. ~Perhaps, I'm just not suited for it anymore~ he thought, as he contemplated the offer and a future outside of Star Fleet. All officers are to attend. Making a mental note, Nymes continued his reading of the SFM weekly briefing, resolute to finish the PADD before making the meeting. (USS Mithrandir - Deck 1, Briefing Room Dr Nymes - 1659) Nymes had nodded to Ensign Montague as he stepped from Starbase Geneva to the nova class ship, and walked along the corridors to the nearest turbolift, meeting up with Ele on the way. The pair nodded to each other as the lift arrived at the hub of the Mithrandir, and smirking like schoolchildren walked to the briefing room. Luckily, they had arrived early enough to take seats around the curved table, waiting for the CO to start the briefing. "Thank you all for attending on such a short notice," Archibald started the meeting. "This meeting is so you all know what is going to happen. Star Fleet has offered me command of this ship and at sixteen hundred and thirty hours today I have accepted the commission. I have arranged with the Admiral that I can take any officer and any crew member with me on this vessel, providing that there is space. This ship only holds 80 crew and any crew that can not be placed here will be transferred to other ships. But you all will be given a choice. The USS Mithrandir has just recently been completed, after work has been delayed due to the war requirements. She is configured for scientific exploration with slight modifications. Upon leaving this meeting, you all will receive a PADD containing all the information of the ship and crew needs. I would appreciate it of you could share the information with the crew in your department and come back to me or Commander Okita with the results. Which reminds me, Commander Okita has accepted to replace Commander West as my First Officer. I am sure you all will give him the same respect that you have shown Commander West." Archibald nodded at Olorin, then scanned the officers. "This vessel is now open for inspection to all. But beware that she is only a small ship and amenities will be limited." Archibald fell silent and looked in front of him. "Normally I would now open the floor and ask for questions or comments. This situation, however, is different and therefore I think we should leave it here. If required I, or Commander Okita, will be available for one to one sessions. And that is basically it, all. Dismissed." Nymes nodded to the Captain, noting the new commander before standing up with his PADD and leaving the room. ~First things first Sickbay~ (USS Mithrandir - Ready Room - Commander Olorin Okita - 1700) Olorin had moved out his few belongings from the Ready Room.  Captain Stakes was already moving swiftly.  After a few formalities, Olorin had been informed that he was relieved of command and that the Captain's offer had been genuine. Olorin entered the Ready Room, with Captain Stakes behind the desk.  Olorin now wore a long coat over his uniform, as he had finally made a decision. "If you'll still have me, sir." he said, as he stood at attention. (USS Mithrandir - Deck 1, Briefing Room - ACEO Lanista - 1703) Lanista was striking the thumb of her left fist against her hip as she listened to the CO speaking. The ACEO was dressed in a uniform variant that spoke of her Klingon heritage. The Captain hadn't yet commented on her attire, but he had announcements to make first: "Thank you all for attending on such a short notice," the Captain said. "This meeting is so you all know what is going to happen. Star Fleet has offered me command of this ship and at sixteen hundred and thirty hours today I have accepted the commission..." The starship, he went on to explain was "configured for scientific exploration with slight modifications." Lanista wondered what those slight modifications might be, but then the CO said PADDs would be distributed explaining the vessel's specifications. The Captain introduced his XO, Olorin - who appeared to be a warrior born, Lanista mused. "This vessel is now open for inspection to all. But beware that she is only a small ship and amenities will be limited," Stakes said. Lanista sneered at the implication that amenities were even to be expected. She was delighted to have a small ship -- like a B'rel. The overdone Starbase had been 'home' for far too long. After the CO said dismissed, Lanista moved to exit the Briefing Room. "Ensign Spero, Ensign Jeffries?" asked Olorin. (Reply Spero, Jeffries) Olorin continued, "It is a pleasure to meet you.  Unfortunately, you do not have the luxury the other departments will have in selecting your help.  You will need to get to work immediately.  Ensign Spero, I need you to speak with Crewman Montro, he will assist you in taking inventory of the ship's supplies and to see what we shall need from the station.  Ensign Jeffries, I would like you to coordinate the quarter's assignment for the crew.  Start with the Senior Staff and help them get settled in.  Any questions?" (Reply Spero, Jeffries) (Reply Spero, Jeffries, Any) (posted by Kaweo Kanoho) (USS Mithrandir Sickbay CMO Dr Nymes 1715) Nymes walked down the corridor, the wall pointing him in the right direction of Sickbay a location that would become a second home for him. The PADD showed that Sickbay abutted Medlab 1, with the second lab separated from them by the corridor he was walking along. The Sickbay had a grand total of 3 biobeds, with one extra in each of the labs; a huge step down from the Dennison, and an operational capacity of less than 10% of the crew wasn’t enough of a contingency. Nymes had, with one look, already decided that emergency protocols would have to be used regarding cargo bays becoming medical areas if required if there was any humanitarian crises that needed to use them. Sickbay itself was decorated very similarly to the Dennison; a cream room, brightly lit, the double glass doors opening into a single room, the main biobed far on the left in its alcove, 2 other biobeds right in front of him. His new office was over to the right, with access directly to the medical lab. As Nymes stepped into the Sickbay, the lights flickered on and stifling a groan, the trill noticed the hum of a hologram initialising. “Please state the nature of the Medical Emergency.” “Dr Nymes, CMO Mithrandir. Run diagnostic protocols, LMH.1” “Understood sir. Welcome Aboard.” Nymes smiled at that. The holo-engineers obviously had taken all the criticism on board with the EMH, and had incorporated improvements into the personality of the LMH. As Nymes waited for the LMH to report its findings, he walked into the office, sitting in the chair with excitement bordering on reverence, and sat in quiet thought. Alex looked at Kit quickly before he answered. "Hi I’m Alex Jefferies" He put out his hand and shook Olorin’s "It is a pleasure to meet you. Ensign Jeffries, I would like you to coordinate the quarter's assignment for the crew. Start with the Senior Staff and help them get settled in. Any questions?" Olorin continued ~Damn wish I got to work with Kit, well I guess there be plenty of time for that later~ He then took a breath as he didn't have a clue where he should put most of the crew "Certainly sir, how would you like the crew quarters organised? (Reply Olorin) he then turned to Kit "Well looks like I’ve got work to do I’ll catch you later" (Reply Spero) (posted by Tom) (USS Mithrandir - Deck One, Briefing Room - FO Commander Olorin Okita - 1720) "Certainly sir, how would you like the crew quarters organised?" asked the young ensign. "Since they are already here, start with the senior officers.  Check if they have any special requirements or requests.  By the time you've got them settled, you should be able to start assigning their crews since they'll have submitted their departmental rosters by then.  Space is a little tighter here than on a typical Star Fleet vessel, so make sure they are aware of those limitations.  Any other questions, ensign?" asked Olorin. (Reply Jeffries) Once he had finished with the Operations officers, Olorin decided to have a word with the unusually garbed engineer.  The engineer towered over Olorin, but he had long since learned that height while an imposing characteristic it was an officer's inner character that mattered more. "Ensign tlha'nISta', I believe you are out of uniform," Olorin said in a pointed whisper, looking straight into the ensign's eyes.  He had noticed the irregular uniform and he saw this as a test that Captain Stakes wanted to see how he handled such a brazen act of disregard for the standards of the ship. I get to handpick my team for the USS Mithrandir, which leads into some of the hardest decisions I have had to face as a Medical Officer, and a new set of dilemmas, being the inaugural head of department at a ship’s launch. Which staff do I keep, which are let go, which new staff should be seen?~ The Mithrandir-A was a Nova class science vessel, thus wouldn’t have a large medical team; it would have six people in total, supplemented by a LMH hologram, a programme which Nymes had only seen used in simulations. Despite the trill’s reservations, he was assured that it was a competent addition to the ship, and would be useful if Nymes was needed off ship. PO2 Diane Duande, the Dennison’s triage nurse, was a competent, amicable, bubbly character, and one suited to the challenge offered by setting up a new medical team, and would fit into the structure Nymes had in mind: The CMO namely himself a deputy spot, ACMO. With two nurses both medically and surgically trained, and 2 medical technicians who would serve as paramedics. Carl Masterson’s resume was top of the list for one of the technician spots, but Nymes wasn’t sure of the crewman’s expertise in first aid; not a problem in the immediate future, as Nymes planned to run basic first aid courses for the ship’s crew, and advanced courses for the entire team with drills in resus and crash patients. The skeleton was set out for the department, and it was a matter of due process for the remaining three positions to be filled, ACMO by a junior doctor, a nurse spot and a technician/paramedic. The team was the one of the first priorities for the new ship and crew; After it had been finalised, the crew medicals could start being run, and the ship would start to be alive; with its 80 crew able to live on board. Nymes sighed, looked at the four PADDs in front of him, and made his decision, tapping out the commands to forward his final list to the  FO and CO with his approval. As soon as the Command staff signed off, the Medical team would be ready to move on board, starting the glut of physicals that would be needed before the crew was fit to fly. This morning though, his darkness was disrupted by his brother breaking their silently agreed bargain not to speak.  Ray was furious to hear that the crew had been reassigned and that most of them were being sent to other billets, only a select few would continue with the Captain.  Carl had just been informed that he was going on the Mithrandir. But Ray had heard no news.  So after a scant two hours, he decided to take matters into his own hands. So here he was now, facing the Chief Science Officer. "Sir, I would like to know why I was not selected for this ship's crew?" Ray said without regard to the Lieutenant's rank or position.  "I demand to be put on this ship's crew.  My research has suffered a serious set back by the loss of the Dennison's saucer section.  I have been stymied time and time again.  Why is this happening?" Ray stared at the Lieutenant, exasperated at the seeming incompetence that met him at every corner. The trill had been handed the dream job building a department from the ground up; choosing the people he wanted for the task. With such a small department, all the decisions had to work, and work immediately. Lost in thought, he found himself standing up, walking out of his quarters and up to the viewport overlooking the Docking pylons, gazing at the ship that would soon be called home. (Starbase Geneva Deck 76 Dr Nymes 2003) It hung at the end of its umbilical, its sleek lines showing the age of the ship was not in keeping with the age of the class; this was a brand new ship, not a thirty year old refit. Nymes knew from a brief glance at the schematics that it included state of the art science gear, and while the Sickbay was a small department, it would be shipping with one of the most advanced Sickbays in the fleet; quality not quantity. A Workbee skittered toward the Nameplate, underlining the Mithrandir’s registry number as Nymes contemplated his future. “Hey stranger, why are you all the way up here?” Hazel asked, shaking Nymes out of his quiet reverie. “Just looking at the stars, Hazel.” “Well I had to ask the computer where you were, you should have been meeting me for a coffee?” Nymes realised his mistake, and was thankful of the second chance that Hazel had given him. “I’m really sorry I had a staff briefing.” “I know; strange place to have one though I thought the Dennison crew were being reassigned?” Hazel remarked, her countenance quizzical, but endearing. Looking into her blue eyes, Nymes hesitated before answering, scared that to admit that he was to be assigned off the Starbase would scupper the start of their relationship. “Well... We are...” “...to the Mithrandir?” Hazel said, motioning with her eyes at the Nova class hanging in space between them. “Yes, it seems so. I’m sorry, Hazel, the timing is awful...” Nymes said, the roles reversed in this meeting, the mood different from the party, but strangely relaxed; Hazel’s confidence contrasting with Nymes’ anxiety. “.. but that’s the fleet. Lewis, we both know that the fleet can send people to opposite ends of the quadrant. I’m not silly enough to say that one dance is everything, but you won’t be jetting off straight away.” “You’re right; We have a week’s grace.” Nymes nodded, finally making eye contact with the doctor, losing himself in her smile. “Then let’s go.” Hazel said with finality, grinning at him, taking the trill by the hand and leading him to the turbolift, to the promenade and to The Doll’s House, for that delayed date.
