He hadn’t dealt with many Vulcans before and always found their lack of emotions confusing. His own mixed background made for a very emotional based make up, sometimes too much so. The Vulcan “Captain Saleke”, looked him over before telling him to stand at ease at which time John eased up a bit but still maintained a tenseness to his frame just under the surface. Then he realized just how foolish he was being and that this was just a case of new ship jitters and assumed the normal “at ease” stance. Saleke reached for and took the PADD John offered and began to scan the data on it. Saleke looked back at him for a minute and then spoke. ”Welcome aboard Lt. Fredericks, the Security department head has been vacant for some time and I welcome your transfer to the ship, you may set yourself up in the office at your convenience. The ship has been at dock for 1.3 hours now and most of the crew have taken shore leave”. “Thank you sir”, John replied. It has been awhile since I have had leave but I would like to get squared away first and then see to my Dept. (Reply Saleke IYW) Saleke still sat looking at John but had now arranged his hands in what John had learned sometime back as a position of contemplation. He called to the computer and arranged for all Johns clearances to be set up. The computer responded with an unusually feminine voice pattern with a very odd mannerism. John did something of a double take knowing this would be odd for any Federation ship but was astounded to have find this on a ship commanded by a Vulcan. “Sir, is that the normal computers voice? I have seen some of the privately owned ships and merchant fleet ships alter the standard voice pattern but” … John let the question drop. Saleke looked back at him with an odd look and replied "Something we picked up along the way would be the proper colloquialism." He then dismissed the new Security chief and again began going though the mound of PADDS and other various reports on the desk in front of him. John turned and left the office. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stardate: 2407.02.17 (USS Mystique –Captains Ready Room – CO, Captain Saleke – 11:56) “Thank you sir”, John replied. "It has been awhile since I have had leave but I would like to get squared away first and then see to my Dept." "Of course Lieutenant, at your convenience." Saleke said. “Sir, is that the normal computers voice? I have seen some of the privately owned ships and merchant fleet ships alter the standard voice pattern but...” "Something we picked up along the way would be the proper colloquialism." Saleke began patiently. [Something?] Came from the speaker. A hologram appeared at the right side of the desk, a petite woman with pink flowing hair that reached to her ankles, with violet eyes and astonishingly pale skin.. "Some thing?" She repeated as she gave Saleke a recrimminating look. "My apologies for the error, I misspoke." Saleke said with an arched eyebrow. "Lt. Fredericks I present to you the Hiren Pattia, she was of a race cultivated by a species known in the Beta quadrant as the Founders to run ships and/or stations by direct synaptic interface. Pattia is also highly telepathic." The introduction apparently satisfied the Hiren, she turned to John with a winsome smile and delicately extended a hand palm down. "A pleasure." She said. (Reply: John) "We found Pattia controlling a derelict station with a number of children aboard her in suspended animation, she and such children as we could save we brought aboard the ship, having one of Doenitz's experimental vessels come upon the scene controlled by another of her kind to destroy her and at a disadvantage we linked Pattia to the ship and she now has direct control over ships systems. Up to this point Pattia has been quiet, I assume she has after a long period adjusted to the difference in technology?" he arched an eyebrow questioningly at the Hiren. "Yes," Pattia said, removing her hand from John's grip. "This ships control systems are much less advanced than that of my masters the Founders and without any self repair protocols," she looked accusingly at the Vulcan, "So I've had to study the layout at length and it's taken me a long time to get confident in using the outputs." The Vulcan nodded. "Now that you have met our resident 'Ghost in the machine' Lieutenant you are free to go, dismissed." After John left Pattia gave Saleke a pouting look. "Why did you send him away? I like him, he's cute." Saleke shook his head. "I have other business to attend to before the day is over and my time is short, you are dismissed also." She stuck out her tongue at him before disappearing, Saleke gave a slight shake of his head in resignation at his fate. ~A logical being in command of a vessel with an emotional nature, how trite.~ Alsmost instantly the chime to the Ready Room sounded again. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stardate: 2407.02.17 (USS Mystique - outside Captain's ready room - Captain Saleke- 1201) The chime to the ready room sounded again within minutes after Lt. Fredericks exit, since he had not had an opportunity to begin poring over the reports again there was no need to set a PADD down. "Come." Saleke said and steepled his fingers as he sat back deeper in the comfortable, almost plush chair. The accouterments of a Captain's quarters and office were a step above that of the First Officer which was elevated above that of the other officers in turn, while Saleke did not need the added comfort or dwell on the enjoyment of it in any way he did note it intellectually and considered it unnecessary. (Reply: Kane) The marine who entered the ready room was noticably taller than the Vulcan and he was also a product of intensive weight training, he nodded as the man snapped a fluid salute and reported in. (Reply: Kane) "Private Curtis it is common for military personnel to report in to the marine commander rather than the Captain of the ship however since you are here I will examine your orders." He then reached for the PADD Kane was carrying. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stardate: 2407.02.17 (USS Mystique - Captain's ready room - Private Kane Curtis - 1202) Kane stepped inside, after the Captainallowed him to. Without the slightest deteriation, he stepped towards Saleke and halted in front of his desk. With a stomp of his right foot, Kane came to a halt. His stance straight, flawless, and strict. "Sir, Private Kane Curtis reporting for duty Sir!" Kane shouted out loud. A salute followed, signaling his respect for Captain Saleke. The moment Saleke started talking again, Kane dropped his arm, and spreaded his feet. His right arm dropped in his laft behind his back, exposing Kane's chest almost to it's fullest. His lifeless eyes stared right in front of him, overlooking Saleke. "Private Curtis it is common for military personnel to report in to the marine commander rather than the Captain of the ship however since you are here I will examine your orders." "Sir, Starfleet ordered me to report to you, and to you only. Starfleet notified you of my arrival Sir." Though the PADD held Kane's orders, The science officer told him that his orders were absolute, so he handed over his PADD, and immediatly after, he reassumed his previous position. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stardate: 2407.02.17 (USS Mystique - Captain's Ready Room - Captain Saleke - 1205) "Sir, Starfleet ordered me to report to you, and to you only. Starfleet notified you of my arrival Sir." What Private Kane Curtis had said was true to the letter but what Saleke had said was true also, the manner of Kane Curtis' reporting in was abnormal. Without bothering to speak though he took the PADD from Curtis and after initiating the proper command codes began reading through them. Curtis' bio was an enigma but what scientific information was contained was emphatic enough, some of it had been placed there by the man who would shortly be joining the ship, Dr. Holis Gralen; CSO. "Your orders show you have been placed here on board the Mystique to act as my personal bodyguard Private but you will report to the MCO." Saleke was very aware that Vanyssa had been issued a marine bodyguard by MCO Richard Lee however with the immediate threat of treachery and sabotage by Doenitz operatives now past having been the Admirals' main terror threat intended to cow "Rebel" commanders into submission the necessity of such a bodyguard was now debatable. (Reply: Kane) "Understood but nevertheless you will abide by the chain of command Private," He stood to his feet noting as he did so that it made no impression whatsoever on him. "I will not dispute the orders that are contained herein as that would be an illogical waste of time but you WILL do as I order." The words will and I were tightly modulated with no change in emotion but designed to carry a greater weight of authority which it did successfully. "As MCO Lee is curently on Geneva attending to business you will report in to 3rd Lt. Alesia Trenor. Good day Mr. Curtis, I will not need your services until I leave the Ready Room at the end of the day after finishing ships business." Saleke knew that the Cyborg (Human with technologically advanced systems built in to enhance performance) would now logically upon his return station himself outside the Ready Room door which would be satisfactory. (Reply: Kane) "Mr. Curtis," Saleke stopped the emotionless being before he stepped through the door. "I will be having officers joining me today to enact the business of which I spoke, you will allow them through and you will not hinder or slow them in any way unless I specifically countermand this order, do you understand? (Reply: Curtis) "Very well, dismissed." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stardate: 2407.02.17 (USS Mystique - Ten Forward – Asst CSO Ensign Naraht (jg) - 1244) “If you have any questions about me or my species, Ash Physioc, I would suggest that you ask me personally, and verbally,” said Naraht firmly. “There can be no trust between those that are practicing deceit with each other. On Janus we live in family groups. The concept of hiding information for purposes to deceive is a difficult one for us to grasp, especially in communicating the way we do, and one I have had to learn for my continued survival. I have already taken steps to do what I can to explain this concept to my people on my planet when sending messages home,” Naraht paused. “Why don’t you tell me about yourself Ashlitu Physioc? Who are you? And if you are as old I suspect you, as a stalk are, why are you still an Ensign?” asked Naraht. Ash looked at Naraht. He could tell if he was to become friends with this Horta he would have to tell the truth or at least part of the truth. "I'm a Betazoid, as you already know. I am me, its the best word to describe me. I don’t believe there are many of them but that one sums be up pretty good. My age holds no meaning to my rank, I used to be in a higher rank than our dear Captain here. But because of my beliefs I couldn’t hold that position. Do you have any more questions?" “Ash Physioc, I have already told you a lot of personal information about myself. ‘I am me?’ That is about as limp as a new baby’s main phalange. I had to learn the hard way that trust should not be tossed about as a child’s playrock but doled out with care lest those who know too much about me end up trying to use that knowledge to hurt or kill me. I am trustworthy, I have a strong conscience and malice within my culture in virtually unthinkable.” Naraht paused again to allow Physioc think about what he said. “Don’t think I didn’t notice that you did not directly answer my question when I asked if you were intruding into my mind without my permission. Understand Physioc, if you want to knock around the rocks with me, then maybe you should relax and be less reticent. Don’t you have family, hobbies or friends? What did you do with your friends in the Academy?” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stardate: 2407.02.17 (USS Mystique - Sickbay- ACMO Lt (jg) Vren Marto - 12.45) Marto had spent most of the morning liaising with the Starbase medical team about having Captain Winters transferred to their care, making sure all her medical records were up to date and informing the Captain, Dr Mias and Lt Ketal about the time of her transfer off ship. While she waited for the team to arrive the medical supplies that had been requisitioned appeared and she and one of the Med Techs set about checking them off the list and getting them squared away. Half way through that a group of people appeared in Sickbay and Marto recognised the Station doctor she had been speaking to. She turned to the tech beside her. "I have to go now. Find the Chief Nurse and have her take over here please." Not waiting for his nod she walked across to the group and introduced herself. "Captain Winters is in one of the private rooms. Please follow me." Taking a padd out of her lab coat pocket she handed it over. "These are her records. Do you mind if I accompany you? I was planning to take some down time on the station anyway." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stardate: 2407.02.17 (USS Mystique - Ten Forward – Asst CSO Ensign Naraht (jg) – 1251) “Physioc, why are you interested in knocking around the rocks with me? After all, you are the one who asked me here today.” Naraht asked, quizzically. "Well if by you meaning would I like to play a game of knocking around rocks, then I would say why not. But if it refers to some type of fight then I would say no. I came to Ten Forward today with the sole hope of gaining a friend although I respect you just as much if you'd prefer not to be my friend," Ash said solemnly. Naraht said, “You still have not directly answered my question. Were you intruding into my mind without my permission or not? I am looking for an affirmative or negative answer to that question.” (Reply Physioc) “I take it that most our shipmates know that you have caused the death of another willingly, don’t they? I can see why they might be wary of you. Maybe you will understand why I might feel wary of you also. And you still have managed to tell me very little about yourself. Perhaps you do not trust me.” Naraht paused in thought for a moment. His many phalangi rippled gently due to his nervousness, but he quelled it sternly. ~I should probably explain this to him to see if he would understand my own wariness of him.~ “When I was at Starbase 32 for testing prior to being accepted into the Academy, a nefarious laboratory technician had thought it profitable to "take samples" of parts of some of the shinier patches of small crystals and various ores out of my armored carapace to sell to passing traders. Though uncomfortable about it due to the absence of any anesthetics for my species, I had allowed the extra "samples" to be taken at great pain to myself, not understanding the technician's true greedy intent, believing that they were being studied in case of injury and for other scientific testing and analysis. When the truth was discovered by the medical Chief of Staff on Starbase 32, I was horrified to find that parts of my "skin" had been harvested for profit without my consent and the technician was summarily court-martialed, but it was never proven conclusively if he had any connection to the Humans for Humanity organization. Would anyone who knew him ever trust him again, knowing what he had done? Maybe, maybe not. But I now know that not everyone I meet is my friend, though my species is possibly naturally too trusting.” “Physioc, if you knew that someone killed another being, whether a stalk like yourself or not, how could you ever be sure that they would not turn on you too? How could you be sure that that same dangerous behavior might not eventually be aimed at you for whatever reason?” asked Naraht. (Reply Physioc) “I hope you understand why it will take some time for me to trust you, Physioc, and why I may end up repeatedly questioning our relationship. But as a Ferengi I once met said, you don’t get any profit at all unless you invest in a little risk. My crewmembers on this ship are my family now. Our lives could often depend on each other, so trust is an important part and intrinsic to that relationship. Without trust we are very isolated from each other, so there is no room for deceit. And most beings are naturally gregarious and need to relate to each other, so it might as well be in a healthy manner.” “So Physioc, when do you want to go knocking around the rocks on the station? I am looking forward to getting out and seeing more than my own cave and other stalks myself. I doubt they would have any quartz worth eating there, but purchasing a gift or two for Dr. Vren Marto and her upcoming wedding wouldn’t be a bad idea.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stardate: 2407.02.17 (USS Mystique - Ten Forward – AOPS/CONN, Ensign Ash Physioc – 1255) Naraht said, “You still have not directly answered my question. Were you intruding into my mind without my permission or not? I am looking for an affirmative or negative answer to that question.” Ash looked her in the eye, "No" He smiled, he didnt want to make a bad impression but Naraht didnt seem to be warming up to him well. “Physioc, if you knew that someone killed another being, whether a stalk like yourself or not, how could you ever be sure that they would not turn on you too? How could you be sure that same dangerous behaviour might not eventually be aimed at you for whatever reason?” asked Naraht, after she explained about an incident on Starbase 32. Ash nodded, "I see your point" He said smiling, something Regan had said in the session was about what Naraht had just said, it looked like the Counsellor was quite good afterall. “I hope you understand why it will take some time for me to trust you, Physioc, and why I may end up repeatedly questioning our relationship. But as a Fearing I once met said, you don’t get any profit at all unless you invest in a little risk. My crewmembers on this ship are my family now. A good will gesture....~ Ash thought, "As soon as you want Naraht. I'm free all day... and then I will also be attending the party after the wedding. If you are going I would like you to meet a...... friend of mine, Regan" He said smiling, hopefully it looked like things were looking up now.. (Reply Naraht) Ash nodded, "Well when ever your ready." Ash said. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stardate: 2407.02.17 (USS Mystique - Ten Forward – Asst CSO - Ensign Naraht (jg) – 1256) “So Physioc, when do you want to go knocking around the rocks on the station?” asked Naraht. Am I invited to it?” (Reply Physioc) “If I go there with you, does it have anything to do with humanoid mating practices?” asked Naraht. “If so, I should tell you now that only a female Horta would interest me. I am sorry but I just would not be interested in you that way. We would do better to work on being friends.” (Reply Physioc) “In the meantime, I am hoping to go to the station soon and investigate the shops’ wares there. I will need to purchase a gift for Dr. Vren Marto and I don’t know what to give them as a wedding present. I would like your help as I am unsure what would be appropriate.” “Physioc, after my shift ends today, I will be free for a few days. I can collate and extrapolate no more conclusions from the small amount of data from the planet we visited for such a short time. We’ll just have to go back to collect more data. While there I didn’t even get to tunnel, and I really want to get the flavor of the place. I am sorry but I just would not be interested in you that way. We would do better to work on being friends.” He said. Ash raised an eyebrow. He wasnt too sure of what Naraht was insinuating? He almost laughed, "No no, Mr. Naraht. I am only interested in being friends. I ment nothing more of it!" Ash almost cryed out in laughter.. “In the meantime, I am hoping to go to the station soon and investigate the shops’ wares there. I will need to purchase a gift for Dr. Vren Marto and I don’t know what to give them as a wedding present. I would like your help as I am unsure what would be appropriate.” Naraht said. He added at the end. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stardate: 2407.02.17 (USS Mystique - Captain's Ready Room - CMO Angeni O. Windsong-Trommashere- 1305) Angeni was sitting in her quarters feeling like crap. She wanted nothing more than to dissapear into the floor. She knew Mason was off with Cindy for whatever reason, so she sat there quietly, trying to recollect her thoughts. She decided that she would stop in and see Riven, but before she could, her thoughts were broken by Saleke's voice requesting her presence in his ready room. She stood up and walked listlessly to his room. Now that he was the Captain, she wasn't sure what he was going to do with her. As she walked in, she stood in the corner, more afraid of him than anything. Her demeanour wasn't unlike a puppy that had been beaten senselessly numerous times, and she looked at him, her voice soft and wavering. "You asked to see me sir?" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stardate: 2407.02.17 (USS Mystique - Captain's Ready Room - Captain Saleke- 1306) The woman who walked into the Ready Room bore little resemblance except physically to the confident young woman who had reported onto the Mystique some months back, her entire demeanor and look was one of a shattered individual which finalized in Saleke's mind that the logical conclusion he had come to regarding her had been 100% justified, still while logic had led him inescapably to this conclusion he took no enjoyment in it. "You asked to see me sir?" "Sit down please Doctor," he said and waited patiently until she did as he had directed and taken the chair before the desk, making it apparent the offer was more in the realm of order than request. "Doctor since my been promotion to CO I have been reviewing the performance of all of the officers on the ship and what might be done to make it run more efficiently, additionally I have also reviewed the records from the counselors office on those same officers as is my right and privilege as Captain of the Mystique." He watched her closely as he continued, his fingers steepled before him. "What I have seen on your file from that office is that you are emotionally unfit to run the medical department and Dr. Mias has grudgingly agreed with my assessment, while he is certain that this condition is not permanent he is in agreement that a change is necessary." (Reply: Angeni) He cocked his head slightly before replying. "Despite what you might think Dr. Mias has stood behind you and attempted in every way to bring about an improvement in your condition but has been unable to do so, I regret to inform you then that I am removing you from the position of Chief Medical Officer and making that position vacant until such time as I appoint another in your place which should be sometime this evening. You are being moved back to assistant to the CMO who will be named. I want you to understand that this decision was not made in animosity or haste but is intended for the betterment of yourself and the ship. Dr. Mias has also suggested that since he has failed to bring about an improvement in your condition it might be preferrable to try a differrent tack and have you see counselor Alessi and I am in agreement with him. Angeni looked at him vacantly. She knew what was going to happen, and for some reason, she just didn't care. She could care less about anyone and everything...and she hated everyone for everything that was going on. For some reason, the stars looked less and less appealing to her every moment. He cocked his head slightly before replying. The reply was unexpected, emotional, sharp and perfectly reasonable according to standard medical practice as well as Star Fleet protocols. "Very well, I will notify Dr. Mias of your preference and to expect you before returning to your post. Let me assure you before you leave doctor that no one incident precipitated this decision, it is the culmination of several months of what Dr. Mias claims are 'Failures on his part'." Saleke didn't add that Riven had mentioned the fear that much of the reason for her continued condition was that she was fighting the healing that he was trying to accomplish in her for some unfathomed reason which was the impetus behind sending her to Dr. Alessi. It was hoped that being a woman ... and a different face that she might open up and release what had been holding her back to Regan where she would not to Riven. "Good night Doctor." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stardate: 2407.02.17 (USS Mystique - Captain's Ready Room - Captain Saleke - 1330) Saleke spent nearly twenty minutes poring over three other PADDS that he had taken from the right-hand stack and transferred to the left, looking at the chronometer he judged he had given Dr. Vren ample time to see to Captain Winters' relocation to the starbase. "Computer... Pattia what is the location of Dr. Vren?" This time there was no quirky rejoinder from the computer, no yes sir, Captain sir.; Instead the holographic representation of the Hiren appeared immediately before his desk. "That was a cold-blooded thing you just did," This time there was no joking or coquettish look on her face. "You just crushed the life out of that young woman." Saleke tilted his head a bit at that comment, "I needn't mention how you treated her before coming on board this ship Pattia and the personnel decisions I make concerning the officers and crew of this ship are made for the benefit of all... and are not open to discussion nor recrimmination by you... or anyone else aboard. My reasoning for a change in department chief in medical is well documented and logical." The Hirens face grew furiously flushed. "I know both logic and from my long ago 'normal' life compassion although the Founders did not enjoy the idea of us embracing such a concept. That was brutal..." "As I said Pattia," Saleke's emotionlessly inflected voice became more commanding. "...this matter is not open for discussion. I asked you a question and now I give it as an order, where is Dr. Vren currently located?" The Hirens violet eyes were hard as she replied. "Dr. Vren has left the ship... Captain." The rank was thrown at him through gritted teeth. "Notify me upon her return to the ship." "Yes sir!" The being snapped and instantly blinked out of sight leaving Saleke with more time to catch up on reports. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
