"I think we need a few more battle simulations. The response time for our surprise simulation was pretty bad. It was almost a full fifteen minutes before all stations reported as battle station ready. However, I think we are all just a little rusty. We are still 41.5 hours from the Kalandra sector and I have confidence we can be ready by then." Eva frowned, her disappointment evident in her expression. She had glanced over Commander Remae's full report on the battle drills and knew that there were was a lot of room for improvement. "Well that is indeed something we will have to work on," She said, "I recently discussed with Commandeer Remae the idea of appointing a new Second Officer to assist both the Commander and myself in making sure this ship and the crew are at the utmost peak of efficiency in the short amount of time we have before the battle. The Commander and I both agree that you would be ideal for the position, assuming you are willing to take on the added responsibilities of the position. Do you feel you are ready to assume this role as a command officer?" (Reply bridge, any) (Posted by Steve) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin - Deck 1, Captain's Ready Room - Lieutenant JG Christopher Adams - 1933) Lieutenant Christopher Adams sat across from Captain Straton discussing the readiness drill that was run earlier in the day. They were heading into war and they needed to be at their peak performance. The slow response time had really irritated the Chief of Operations. "Well that is indeed something we will have to work on," the captain stated. "I recently discussed with Commandeer Remae the idea of appointing a new Second Officer to assist both the Commander and myself in making sure this ship and the crew are at the utmost peak of efficiency in the short amount of time we have before the battle. The Commander and I both agree that you would be ideal for the position, assuming you are willing to take on the added responsibilities of the position. Do you feel you are ready to assume this role as a command officer?" "Absolutely, sir," Adams responded. "I've been working really hard since assuming this role due to the injury of Lieutenant O'Connor. The slow response times from the readiness drill are unacceptable. As Chief of Operations, my duty is to assemble the information from the workings of the ship. As Second Officer, I will have more authority to help to clean up our response times, not just assemble and organize the data. I do feel I am ready." That allowed for quicker response times and a higher rate of processing data. Seated at the back of the bridge at one of the general duty stations, Lieutenant James Boocher was running a few diagnostics on the internal sensors. A message popped up on his workstation display and he turned around to see Lieutenant Adams nodding at him from the forward section of the bridge. He needed to go somewhere and he needed Boocher to take his place. The Lieutenant walked down the ramp and assumed the main Ops station while Adams walked over to the Captain's Ready Room. A few taps on the workstation and the layout switched from the one Adams preferred to the layout that Boocher had been using up on the general duty station. There was a beep from the comm system and the voice of the Chief Engineer, Lieutenant Matrix, came out over the speaker. =^=Engineering to Bridge.=^= Boocher pushed a button to open a comm channel. "Bridge here…ah...Lieutenant Boocher speaking." He wasn't used to talking to the Chief of Engineering and it showed in the tone of his voice. =^=Computer response time is slow due to a malfunction in a logic code routine,=^= explained Matrix. =^=We're making adjustments to the programming now and expect to have this resolved within the hour.=^= "Yea…I noticed that some of the routines that I was running were a little slow," responded Boocher. "That explains it. I'll add this to the repair list and inform Lieutenant Adams when he gets back to the bridge. Anything else to report? How are things down there? The engines still pulsing?" He asked with a nervous laugh at the end. "You can report to Commander Remae first thing in the morning so that you two can coordinate your efforts. I'll expect to be kept appraised of the your progress. If you don't have any questions for me, you are dismissed." Eva nodded her head before retaking her seat. A smile appeared on his face as he also stood up and shook his captain's hand. "You can report to Commander Remae first thing in the morning so that you two can coordinate your efforts. I'll expect to be kept appraised of the your progress. If you don't have any questions for me, you are dismissed." "Thank you, sir. I won't disappoint you," assured Adams. "The Paladin will be in ship shape in Bristol fashion before we lead our strike to reclaim Betazed." Captain Straton nodded her head and sat back down behind her desk while the new Second Officer walked out of the Captain's Ready Room. (USS Paladin - Deck 9, Personal Quarters Lieutenant JG Adams - Lieutenant JG Christopher Adams - 2145) The doors slid open to his quarters and Lieutenant Adams marched in still brimming with pride from his promotion to second officer. He had just spent the last couple of hours celebrating with his long time friend Ensign Fala Taban in Ten Forward. Not only were they finally going to start sticking it to Doenitz, but now he would be working side-by-side with Commander Remae in order to get the ship in order for the attack. Adams touched the screen on his computer to see if he had any messages. There were a few status reports from his operations officers and a message from the ship's Supply Officer. He touched the latter message to read the contents. Apparently, they didn't move slow here on the Paladin. The Supply Officer said that tomorrow he would be moving to his new quarters on deck five and that his office on deck three would be ready soon after. He should have his personal items boxed up and they would move it for him first thing in the morning. ~Office?~ though Adams. ~Interesting. I should go check it out.~ (USS Paladin - Deck 3, Second Officer's Office - Lieutenant JG Christopher Adams - 2150) Lieutenant Adams rounded the corner and found the door to the office that would soon be his. He glanced down at the name printed on the door: SECOND OFFICER - LIEUTENANT (JG) MICHAEL IAN O'CONNOR. His thoughts went back to his first away mission where they were exploring an unknown alien vessel which was trapped in a spatial rift. --------------------------------------------- Mission: The Enigma Factor Day: 1 Stardate: 2407.01.27 (Unknown Vessel - Control Center - Ensign JG Christopher Adams - 1833) Ensign Michael Ian O'Connor nodded and looked towards Doctor Nissa Whetari and Ensign Christopher Adams, "Doctor Whetari, Ensign Adams, you're with me, we're going to head down to engineering. Adams, you think you can convince the turbo lift to take us there without voice commands, or should we find what passes for a Jefferies tube and hoof it?" Ensign Adams made quick work of figuring out the turbolift and soon they were heading down into the bowels of the alien vessel. After a few seconds, the doors reopened on a dark hall. Adams illuminated the passage with his palm beacon and walked towards a large room which had a strange pulsing glow coming from within. In the middle was a single chamber with half a dozen conduits entering it. Radiating outward from the chamber were several shimmering strings floating in mid air. An intermitted hissing sound could be heard from the strings as air was sucked into them. Sitting in the middle of the chamber was a single glowing ball of energy. Scattered about the floor of the camber were more bodies. Ensign Adams approached the chamber cautiously tricorder in hand. "It appears that the quantum singularity is still getting power and is causing smaller pockets of subspace tears around it. We should avoid contact." "All right, first person to loose a limb to the subspace rips buys the rest dinner," quipped O'Connor. Turning to Adams he continued. "We need to find a way to either get us out, or contact the Paladin so she can get us out, let's start by taking a look around and figuring out just what everything is down here, until we get the system translated we aren't going to have a whole lot of luck doing much but rudimentary things. I think our primary concern is reestablishing at least a com link with the Paladin. Any ideas on that other than going back to the basics and flashing the running lights in Morse code?" "Well we know standard communication channels aren't going to work, because our own comm system can't break through the subspace interference. Hmmm," thought Adams. "We could modify the sensors to transmit a positron burst encoded with a message. It wouldn't allow live communication, but we could send messages back and forth. The burst would be picked up by the Paladin's main deflector dish and processed as part of their sensor data, but there's no guarantee that they would know it's a message. It's kind of like Morse code. Just all in one burst of light," said Adams with a grin. --------------------------------------------- (USS Paladin - Deck 3, Second Officer's Office - Lieutenant JG Christopher Adams - 2154) Lieutenant Adams's thoughts returned to the present. He reached down to the door panel and pressed the button to unlock the door. It slid open and Adams walked inside the dark room. "Computer. Lights," instructed Adams to the empty room. The small chamber lit up. There was a desk and a couple of chairs inside, but that was the only furnishings. The furniture looked like it hadn't been used in several months, but the Paladin's air filtration system prevented any dust form building up. Adams sat down behind the desk and put his hands behind his head and leaned back in his chair. The First Officer had informed the CO earlier in the day and the Bridge had made the preparations for the shuttle's departure. "Mr Brownlee, I don't know why the 52nd Command want you back so badly and we're reluctant to let you go but the Admiral gave a direct order.", said Remae slightly apologetically, order were orders and they all go where they are sent. "Commander Remae to the Bridge, drop us to impulse." =^= Aye Commander =^= The doors opened to the shuttlebay, revealing the changing stars, showing the ships deceleration from warp to impulse. The CSO and the FO exchanged a handshake and before long, the shuttle was leaving the bay, heading into space and a rendezvous with the Meramax, bound for Geneva. A 3 dimensional star field suddenly appeared above the table before zooming in to a single star. "The Betazed star system," Eva said, as a solar system containing ten planets was displayed. Eva tapped a few commands and a series of red dots appeared on the display. "The red dots represent the Betezed Defense perimeter, not nearly as impressive as the Mars Defense Perimeter but still sure to be a thorn in an invading fleets side." She tapped in another set of commands and a set of yellow triangles appeared on the display. "And this is the fleet of enemy ships assigned to the system. The enemy knows we are coming, of that we can be sure, they just don't know when or how. This data is compiled from our latest intelligence." She tapped yet another set of commands and the view zoomed in on the fourth planet in the system a blue green sphere of particular beauty in Straton's opinion. This was Betazed, her home. "Around Betezed itself is the star base Serenity, a Trudin Class star base. Serenity is home to four fighter squadrons. Lastly, there is the planetary defenses of Betezed itself. We have reports that Doenitz's forces have been working to upgrade these defenses to bring them in line with standard planetary defensive systems. We will have to punch several holes through the planetary shield grid in order to land our group forces. I've highlighted the places where we will need to land our forces to give them the greatest strategic positioning." She paused to look at Commander Remae. "Commander you recently had to infiltrate the Betazed system. What can you tell us of the defensive perimeter and the ships occupying the system?", asked the Captain and once again, a flash of images ran through the First Officer's mind, images of landing on Betazed and the pain of that mine explosion that robbed him of his legs. "Yes Captain, Remae accessed his personal logs of the Spectre at that time and brought up one of his log entries: 'Captain's Log, Stardate 2407.01.15 The Spectre has assumed a stationary orbit around Avandar, one of the Class J gas giants, our plan is to launch a shuttle and coast with no power and basically crash into Betazed, we're sure the shuttle can handle the trip but the defences around Betazed are too thick, even for a cloaked ship. It's clear from the Tactical Database we stole that this seems to be a staging area for Doenitz's forces to attack, we've found fighters, large capital ships and even shipyards here. The tactical Database lists all the ships and other defences here and their locations, it's allowed us to plot a course that is indirect but will avoid most of the superior ships and sensors around Betazed.'" The log ended and Remae realised it was the last one had made before... he wanted to stop thinking about it. "The database is on file but simply, it showed fighter squadrons and offensive ships located at Betazed but the weakness was that it wasn't prepared with defensive positions beyond Betazed, it was simply a staging area to launch missions and return to supply, however, now, I think we have to assume that has been rectified.", said Remae gloomily. He added, "I think we can still assume that the larger offensive ships are located at Betazed and if that is the case, we should adopt swift attack and run tactics against them, break up their forces and then attack the smaller forces with our superior numbers." "Finally, we had contact with a resistance force on Betazed that were conducting small operations against the enemy forces, they were lead by particularly powerful telepaths, powerful enough that my Counsellor could contact them over a few light years, perhaps we can try and contact them and coordinate our attacks?", he said finishing what he had to say. Everything smelt new, a distinct sign that a lot of expense had been allocated to this ship. That's what he liked the best about the Federation. Money never seemed to be an issue. Although he had to admit that the three ships he had travelled on to reach the USS Paladin had all seen better days. It was a question of priority, he supposed. Typical of Brek, he slowed down when he had almost reached his destination. What would Captain Straton think of her new 'acquisition'? A Ferengi science officer... It sounded good to his ears, but it was atypical. On the other hand, a Betazoid CO was preferable than... say, a Klingon one. Summing up his courage, Brek pressed the buzzer and formally announced his presence: "Ensign Brek reporting for duty Sir." No matter how much she tried though, her mind kept going back to the last time she had been involved in an invasion of her home world in a universe with a different past than the one she now found herself in. She was drawn from her dark thoughts by the sound of the door buzzer. "Come," She said, looking up from her terminal screen. She frowned when she saw a short Ferengi wearing a Star Fleet uniform. His uniform marked him as either Science of Medical with the rank of Ensign(jg). Eva watched him closely as he came to attention in front of her desk. "Ensign Brek reporting for duty Sir," The Ensign said. Eva glared at the Ensign silently for several seconds, looking him up and down. "Order," She snapped finally, holding out her hand. She took the PADD the Ensign placed in her hand and quickly decoded the orders contained on it and looked them over, being sure to keep an eye on the Ensign. "Ensign Brek assigned as Assistant Chief Science Officer," She said, reading aloud while silently confirming the command codes contained on the PADD. ~Wouldn't put it past Doenitz to try and slip a spy onto the ship, and what better than a Ferengi; a race known to be immune to a Betazed's empathy and telepathy.~ She thought, not letting her guard down for an instant. "Welcome Aboard Ensign," She said at last, her voice cold and anything but welcoming. "What are your areas of specialty? (Reply Brek) Eva nodded, placing the PADD down. "Once you have stowed your gear in your quarters, I want to you report to Commander Remae, the First Officer, for duty assignment. Normally you would report to the CSO, but we are currently without one. You may very well have to stand in as the acting CSO. Do you have a problem with that Ensign?" (Reply Brek) (NRPG: Leaving room here for more if needed) "You are dismissed Ensign," Eva said finally, watching the Ensign until he had left and the Ready Room doors had fully closed behind him, then and only then did she turn her attention back to her terminal screen. ~Great, a Ferengi science officer. Crewmembers were wearing weapons everywhere, and here he was, confronted to a Betazoid who seemed to have forgotten her empathy! A pure abomination it was, but a damn good looking one ~ he reflected, doing all he could not to stare at Captain Straton. With luck it would pass for dumb respect for the authority she represented. After the usual orders, the reality of where he was hit him square in the face again when Straton asked him whether he had a problem with standing as Acting CSO. "No Sir," he responded right away, governed by the pay increase and the certitude that this was what Straton wanted to hear. He would deal with the details later on... The main thing was, with no Chief of Science to report to, it looked like there was a little heaven in this hell hole, after all. He was still daydreaming about his prospects when he heard the icy voice of his new CO dismiss him, so he left as quickly as his little legs could carry him. Now, before he could make a nice cosy nest in the Science Department, he needed to report to Commander Remae. ~ What type of Bajoran would he be?~ He wondered? ~Someone who hated the prophets and liked to collect Cardassian medical instruments?~ Brek squared his shoulders. After what he had seen so far, he knew that he had to be prepared for the unexpected. He sat down on his couch and began to read the logs of the night shift and it wasn't long before the door chime was activated and his first appointment of the day came through the door, Ensign Brek. "Ensign, welcome aboard -- I am sorry I didn't see you yesterday but I trust you found everyone you wanted? Before you got started, I wanted to bring you up to day on the mission and what I expect from you.", he said standing up from the couch. (Reply from Brek) "Okay, I assume you are up to date with the communications logs but I wanted to details the ships' mission.", he said and Remae began to lay out the Paladin's mission, at least, as much as he know. "The Paladin will meet up with her task group in just over a day, then we're going to head to Betazed which is under heavy control of Admiral Doenitz. This is probably going to be one the largest battles of the war and the largest battle outside sector 001.", he said pausing for a moment, "From the Science Department, I can foresee us needing someone special. The Captain has hinted in sending in a single ship cloaked or otherwise hidden to scout the area, I want you to begin thinking about ways we can use a cloak to hide a small ship, perhaps a fighter, perhaps a shuttle from enemy sensor grids.", he said waiting for the aCSO to think about the problem. (Reply from Brek) "I will know more after my meeting with the Captain... anyway, you have a department to run and I have a flight in a fighter to prepare for, Ensign, dismissed, if you need anything, please see myself or the Second Officer... the Captain is going to be busy and out of contact for a while, as we prepare the plans for this mission. He was even eating a muffin, which immediately gave Brek the desire to have one himself. He made a mental note to make sure that he stops by the mess hall as soon as this interview was over, and order a little snack to help him tackle the day ahead. "Ensign, welcome aboard -- I am sorry I didn't see you yesterday but I trust you found everyone you wanted? Before you got started, I wanted to bring you up to day on the mission and what I expect from you.", he said standing up from the couch. More fluff seemed to drop out of it everytime someone sat on it but it was always comfortable and he served as a bed on more than one occasion. Remae sat behind his desk and offered the chair on the other side to Brek. Brek sat down right away, doing his best not to be overly distracted by the muffin. He could feel his mouth watering liberally. "Firstly, Ensign, I can confirm that you are going to be our Acting Chief Science Officer as of right now, you have a large department to manage and you are the only senior officer, you presence on the Bridge is also a requirement... do you have any problems with assuming this role, Ensign?", asked the First Officer, taking a small bite of his muffin. "It is a challenge that I accept, Sir," Brek commented. Even for him, there was a certain amount of bragging in this simple phrase, he realized, for he still had no clear idea how much work would be involved. Yet on the other hand, considering that the USS Paladin was on the verge of a very difficult mission, he welcomed the workload, as it would help him not to focus too much on the danger facing them. "Okay, I assume you are up to date with the communications logs but I wanted to details the ships' mission.", he said and Remae began to lay out the Paladin's mission, at least, as much as he know. When the FO made his request about a cloaking device, Brek could feel his first headache coming on. He had gathered that in accepting the position of aCSO it would have its downside, but he hadn't expected it to bite him so early. Besides, wasn't the Federation forbidden from using such devices? Still, the more important thing right now was to play the part correctly. If the Paladin wanted a cloaking device, he would do his damn best to provide one. "I will see what can be achieved, Cmdr," he replied, trying his best to sound positive. "This said, no matter what we manage to conjure up, it may not be of much help if the detection technology of our enemies is superior to what we imagine. Speed during this mission, will also have to be of the essence." "I will know more after my meeting with the Captain... anyway, you have a department to run and I have a flight in a fighter to prepare for, Ensign, dismissed, if you need anything, please see myself or the Second Officer... the Captain is going to be busy and out of contact for a while, as we prepare the plans for this mission. Anything further?", he asked. "No sir, thank you, sir," Brek said, his mind already filled with designs for an interphase generator and what was the best way to avoid detection from an antiproton beam. The computer, like an indulgent parent complied right away, with the funny little chirp that accompanied the completion of every task. Now that he felt a bit warmer, Brek went to sit at his desk, easing himself onto a comfortable cushion that he had brought with him on his first visit. Not only was it more pleasant, but it also helped him to gain a few precious inches, essential for his well being. After spending some time in the mess hall eating and drinking, it was time that he put his musing about cloaking devices into better use. No doubt that the FO would soon ask him what was feasible and he knew that he had better have something decent to answer this time. The last thing he wanted was for Straton's boots to be acquainted with his backside. Still, as he worked on various blueprints spread over the desk, his mind kept being distracted by the menace hanging over Betazed. It helped him understand a bit better the dangerous mood of Captain Straton. If Ferenginar had been in the same situation, he wouldn't feel too bright either. What he couldn't understand, on the other hand, was why anyone would want to attack Betazed? By the great monetary collapse of 9315, these people were telepaths! As the female, but neutral voice of the computer listed the atrocities committed by President Doenitz, Brek sensed himself getting colder and colder despite the heat prevalent in his office. He had of course been aware of a civil war, but it had by far extended his comprehension of it. These past four years, he had been so engrossed in his studies, and what fun he could get in his free time, that the importance of Doenitz's movements had escaped him completely. It had just been a distant voice in the news, quickly switched for a channel showing entertainment. No wonder his history teacher used to look at him like he had developed a bad case of bubonic plague... Brek let out a heavy sigh at the realization of his gross ignorance, and tried to comfort himself at the fact that he was a Ferengi at heart. He liked to pretend that he would do anything for the smell of profit, but the mere idea of real wars, pain and losses disgusted him. Brek looked down at his waist, and suddenly the phaser that he had been forced to carry at all time finally took all its significance. If fate was ever to place him anywhere near any of Doenitz' troops, he knew that he wouldn't hesitate one moment to shoot. ~ Not that this would ever happen ~ he told himself. He wasn't tailored to be on the front line, and this was a big relief to him. A mere scientist like him could only be useful behind his usual science station. With these thoughts in mind, Brek refocused on the phase cloaking device that he was working on. Maybe that the best solution was to create two cloaks? A genuine one for Cmdr Remae's mission, and a second one, not overly sophisticated but enough to fool the enemy in another direction? NRPG: Brek's thoughts are only his. Unless of course it was the sickbay 'squad' sending someone in person because he had conveniently forgotten to report for his medical...? Matrix tapped his comm badge, ="Mr. Cohen, hold long before that core upgrade is completed.= A few moments passed before Matrix received a reply from Ensign Cohen. =^= Chief, I'm finishing up the reboot in the ECC on deck two. The secondary computer core should be up in 30 seconds. =^= Matrix was busy selecting display screens, "Excellent, can we off load the current simulations to the ECC and free up the primary core for Mr. Adams? We only have about 14 minutes before the XO requires the main computer." Peter shook his head as he reviewed his PADD of the main computer core status, =^= Steve, the ECC can handle about half of what's currently in the main core. Let me get down to engineering and help with the transfer. If we dump Astrometrics we might be able to do it. I'm on my way down to main engineering.=^= Matrix smiled,"I'll let the bridge know. Thanks Pete." Matrix noted the ECC was up and reporting ready. He initiated a memory transfer over to the ECC's newly upgraded memory core. Within a few moments the main computer core had about 25 percent of its memory and processor load transferred over to the emergency computer core. ~Time to give Mr. Adams the news.~ "Matrix to Ensign Adams." Matrix reviewed the transfer process as he waited for Mr. Adams to reply. (Reply Adams) "Mr. Adams, the ECC upgrade has been completed and we're transferring the current simulations over to it from the main computer core....we have about 29 percent of the main core moved. I don't believe we'll have 100% of the core freed up in 12 minutes. If we dump the current Astrometrics processes I'd estimate about 85% of the core will be ready. We should be able to augment the remaining processing required through some of the subsystems as they are needed." reported Matrix. Adams didn't want to have to be the one to explain to Commander Remae why they couldn't get telemetry on the Task Group because the core was being diverted for simulations. It's funny how a few minutes can seem like an eternity when you are waiting for bad news. =^=Matrix to Ensign Adams,=^= came the chief engineer's voice over the comm system. "Yes, Chief. We should be able to augment the remaining processing required through some of the subsystems as they are needed.=^= Adams breathed a sigh of relief. "I think I can work with that. Dump Astrometrics, they will have to get by until we get underway to Betazed. For the other 15%, I can off load some of the processing power to other systems here and there until 100% is freed up. If I have to, I'll start up some shuttlecraft and use their computer cores. Thanks for figuring this out. Nice work, Chief" =^=Aye sir, I'll let Astrometrics know the bad news,=^= replied Matrix and the comm channel cut out. He didn't want to disappoint Astrometrics, but it was simply bad timing. Matrix tapped his comm badge. "Matrix to Astrometrics. We need to clear all of your simulations from the main computer core to free up enough processing power for the task group communications needs within the next twelve minutes." (Reply Astrometrics, if anyone is there) "Sorry to inform you that the main computer core will be dumped within 10 minutes to accommodate the XO's communication requirements for the mission. We can save the simulation work so far and can resume the simulation after the communications work is finished." said Matrix. (Reply Astrometrics) "I'm sorry, but we have freed up all the core space we can, Astrometrics is taking the majority of the computational time and memory. This is the only way to free up the core for the XO's requirements." said Matrix. Matrix hated to disappoint anyone, but there was no choice in this instance. The core had to be dumped quickly. Out there was the 21st Task Force. They were still travelling at warp, the FO was going to leave it as late as he could to minimise the time it would take for them to start their trip to Betazed. "Ensign Brek, the 21st is suppose to consist of 210+ starships, destroyers and other vessels. I want a complete scan of the entire fleet and a list of all the ships identified and on my desk within the hour.", said Remae to the new Science Officer, a big job for the Ensign but Remae was sure he could complete the job. "Captain, we're approaching the 21st Task Force.", Remae said touching his commbadge, "Take us out of warp.", he ordered and the ship seemed to be grateful, making a pleasing sound as the warp drive was shutdown to be replaced by the sound of the impulse engines. He had a feeling he knew what was going on. That they had reached the fleet or betazed, either one. He didn't get told much as a Ensign JG, but he did what was told of him. Niles thanked the crewman and began walking down the hall. As he was walking he reviewed the PADD. Nothing, but system checks, security checks, and some personal notes. It was nothing new. He was going to go stop by his quarters on deck 9, before heading towards his post. He had a feeling they were going to get ready for something. After getting off a turbolift, Niles walk through the doors of his quarters. Same quietness as always, as expected. Everything was neat and organized for any unexpected visitors. He also just thought it was a personal responsible to do so. After laying down some things, Niles noticed a neatly wrapped gift on his bed. He walked over to it and noticed there wasn't a note on it. He began to unwrap it. There he found a note and another box. Taking the note, he opened it up. It read: Hey Niles, I was hoping to give you this awhile ago. I'm sure you will enjoy what it is. If not, just transport it out into space. Just kidding. See you at mess hall. Love, Erika Bisbal Niles smiled at the note. Miss Erika Bisbul was a beautiful Ensign JG at engineering, human, that he met the very first day he came aboard. He laid down the card and opened the box. In there laid a frame and in the frame was a picture of Erika. Niles smiled again. He took the picture and laid it on the desk. He snapped as he realized he had to get going to his post. He began walking out the door and to his position, with PADD in hand. The Gorkon was one of the latest in the great line of Vor'cha-class attack cruisers to come out of the Qo'noS Orbital Factory Base. Outfitted with the new phased disruptor cannons it was a formidable weapon that you wanted on your side in a battle. Captain Korok, son of Karr, was pacing his bridge with growing impatience for the flag ship of this task group to arrive. The only thing that had taken his mind off of the waiting was the scouting mission that he ordered one of his K'vort class vessels to undertake while they were waiting. They had just returned with some great intelligence on the enemy positions and what they were facing once the task group arrived at Betazed. "Captain," spoke up one of the Klingon officers at the rear of the ship. Captain Korok looked up from his pacing to see what he wanted. "The Rebel Starfleet ship we detected on long range sensors has dropped out of warp and is approaching at sub-light." The stars returned to their sub-light pattern and the Paladin continued at impulse power towards a large group of ships. The communication system suddenly alerted Adams to an incoming transmission. "Commander, we are being hailed," announced Adams to the bridge. (reply Remae) Adams nodded and pushed the button, which opened the communication line. She was already reaching for her tricorder as Bill Gates, the senior orderly, called her over. "It's Lieutenant Menelian, Doctor. Apparently he collapsed in the Officer's Mess." Kell frowned as she ran the tricorder over the Romulan. Her knowledge of Romulan physiology was a bit rusty, but even so the readings didn't look good. He was unconscious, non-responsive, and his vital functions were weakening even as she took the readings. "Get me three cc's of antriphorcodeine, 5 cc's of heliostatin and ten cc's of tricordomine-a," she ordered. "We have to stabilise him." One by one she injected the hypos, and then watched the displays anxiously until eventually, some ten minutes later, she was sure they had settled. Well below par but at least they weren't degrading any more. Heaving a sigh of relief, Kell ordered a full spectrum of blood tests, liver, heart and lung function. There was no obvious cause that she could see, and Menelian was in no state to give any information. So Kell hoped the tests would show what the problem was. "Notify me if there is any change at all," she said. "I'll have to report this to the XO." (USS Paladin, CMO's Office, MO Dr Kellita Weir, 1615) Stepping into the CMO's office, which she was using temporarily until the Paladin was assigned a new CMO ~Or even an ACMO would be nice,~ she thought, Kell sat down and opened a commlink to Commander Remae Ktell. "I was monitoring the internal sensors when I started picking up odd electromagnetic emissions in the E-band." "That's odd," responded Adams hitting a few keys on his workstation searching the navigation charts. "The closest known protostar is over a hundred light years away, so that couldn't be the source.
