USS Paladin - December 2007 Compiled by Jason French ======================================================================================================================== Mission: Mjolnir's Fury Day: 3 Stardate: 2407.06.25 ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin - Main Engineering - Lieutenant Steven Matrix - 1321) (USS Paladin - Main Engineering - Lieutenant Steven Matrix - 1331) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin - Main Engineering - Lieutenant Steven Matrix - 1321) Matrix sighed. He didn't want to disappoint Astrometrics, but it was simply bad timing. Matrix tapped his comm badge. "Matrix to Astrometrics. We need to clear all of your simulations from the main computer core to free up enough processing power for the task group communications needs within the next twelve minutes." Ensign Wessels had been in Astrometrics for the past 9 hours working on the simulations when the CEO called. =^= Ensign Wessels here Chief, what can I do for you? =^= "Sorry to inform you that the main computer core will be dumped within 10 minutes to accommodate the XO's communication requirements for the mission. We can save the simulation work so far and can resume the simulation after the communications work is finished." said Matrix. The Ensign sunk in his chair, =^= Sir, we have been working on this simulation for countless hours, we're only 2 hours out from the simulation being finished. =^= replied the Ensign. "I'm sorry, but we have freed up all the core space we can, Astrometrics is taking the majority of the computational time and memory. This is the only way to free up the core for the XO's requirements." said Matrix. Matrix hated to disappoint anyone, but there was no choice in this instance. The core had to be dumped quickly. The Ensign knew there was no point in arguing with the Chief, =^= Well I'll shut it down as quickly as I can and save off the results so far. =^= said Ensign Wessels. Matrix looked up in reply, "Make every effort Ensign, the core will be dumped in 8 minutes 46 seconds." Matrix out. Ensign Wessels processed the shutdown command and waited for 6 minutes before the simulation finally finished its subroutines, saved to main memory, verified the save and shutdown. Astrometrics went dark almost 3 minutes later. (Posted by Steve) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin - Main Engineering - Lieutenant Steven Matrix - 1331) Main engineering was almost completely dark except for the various displays around the room and outlining offices. The main door light band glowed a bluish-green as so did the recessed light panels on the walls. A handful of figures could be seen working silently in the command island and another few working on the main displays just under the dark sky bridge. The intermix chambers of Sherwood Forest glowed the usual blue and green and the usual low hum was heard through out engineering. Crew members were reviewing displays, PADDs, working on open panels and on other systems throughout engineering. Despite the orderly and calm appearance, tension filled the air. A new mission was about to unfold, but the crew was professional and well trained. Lieutenant Matrix was in his office. It too was dark with only the glow of the a single monitor lighting up the CEO's face as he stared at the display. Ensign Cohen walked into the CEO's office and without saying a word handed Matrix a PADD. The PADD contained the status of engineering and the rest of the ship before the rendezvous was to take place. Matrix's face didn't show any emotion. Peter Cohen knew that look, nothing verbal was required and he left the CEO's office for his own. They were as ready as they could be. Time would judge the effectiveness of the crew and the new ship's systems. Matrix sat back in his chair and noted the blinking status lights just visible in main engineering. He took a few moments to reflect on his crew and their accomplishments before getting up and walking through engineering, much like the Captain would tour the ship before a major battle. It was a complete surprise to him. He only had been here a month or so and was already getting put as head of security. He had thought he was being called from the performance he had pulled on the boarding party drill. After disobeying an order from Ensign Trei and left his post to help with the defense of the enemy boarding parties. But still Niles didn't want to show his happiness, but more of seriousness. He had noticed the Captain's facial expression as he stepped to the side of the room and could tell she didn't like that. He knew it was not going to be taken lightly in the future. He also knew he had to prove himself to the Captain, double time. No, more like triple time now, but first he had to say something. "Are there any questions?" asked the Captain. Niles took a glance at the Captain. He parted his mouth only a tiny bit to speck, but he stopped himself. Forgetting that Ensign Trei and Commander Remae were in the room, he decided to wait before specking. ~Why do I always do this? I do my job great, but when it comes to specking or working with higher ranking officers, I hesitate and screw up!~ (Reply Any) (Posted by Niles George) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin, Ready Room, FO, Commander Remae Ktell - 14.55) Remae waited for any questions to be asked regarding the new appointments of the Acting Chief of Security and the Acting Chief of Security, when they were all done the FO said, "I want to see all three of you in the Observation Lounge immediately.", he said and with the CO dismissed them, the FO stood behind to have a quick word with his CO. "Captain, we're going to be conducing several more drills on our approach to Betazed, is there any areas you want specifically looked at? Close armed combat? Small craft deployment? Large scale deployments?", asked Remae hopefully to get some input. They had several days before approaching Betazed, enough time to train in a couple of areas, but not all. (Reply from Straton) "Aye Captain, we'll work hard to get the job done.", he said before turning and heading out of the Ready Room, he had a few officers waiting for him in the OL. (Reply from Straton, Any) (Posted by Anthony Keen) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin, OL, FO, Commander Remae Ktell - 15.05) The FO entered the room to find the three officers waiting for him and he invited them all to sit down as he did the same at the head of the table. "We have several days before we approach Betazed but the Captain has indicated to me that we need to prepared in several areas, but there is a lot to do. Mr Adams, as of now, the ship is on a double shift rotation, yellow alert until further notice and I want to prepare of a specific list of training situations for the crew, that is where Ensigns George and Trei come in...", said Remae now looking at the new heads of Security and Tactical respectively. "Ensign George, as head of Security, its your job to lock down the Paladin, I want all security to report to secure all vital areas and report to training. They are on double shifts now, I know it's a long day, 16 hours, but break it up between security duties and security training, more drills Ensign, more surprises, you have the authority to do what you want, go to it.", said Remae and paused for a moment to allow any questions or replies from the Chief of Security. (Reply from George) "Ensign Trei, it's your job to prepare the Paladin for battle, even though we've done a lot there is a lot to do. The Captain specifically ordered you to get to grips with the Holograph Tactical System, get yourself to a holodeck and get to work on that, when you are aren't training, I want you to be on the Bridge getting deadly familiar with the Tactical systems and Fleet systems, you'll be assisting to coordinate a large fleet with many support vessels, we need you to be very fast and very sure of how to use these system.", said Remae and once again he paused. (Reply from Trei) "Along with weapons, we also have defensive systems and other systems to consider and that's where Lieutenant Adams comes in as Chief of Operations... once we're engaged in the battle, we won't be going anywhere, as soon as we're engaged I want to be able to transfer warp power to the shields with a moment's notice, is this possible?", he said and waited a moment for the room to consider what he's said. (Reply from Any) "Okay, is there any questions you want to ask me? Comments? Problems? Recommendations?", asked Remae and he paused once more and sat back in his chair as he waited for anyone to reply. (Reply from Adams, George, Trei, Any) (Posted by Anthony Keen) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin - Observation Lounge - Ensign JG Niles George - 15.06) "...you have the authority to do what you want, go to it," said Remae. Niles was lucky to have had a PADD in hand when he had gone to the Captain's ready room, but it was nothing of surprise, because he always has a PADD in hand. "Yes, Sir. I'll be sure to have some holodeck training programs set up and have everyone report to training by tomorrow morning." After listening to what Remae had to say and talking to the rest of the officer, Remae said,"Okay, is there any questions you want to ask me? Comments? Problems? Recommendations?" Niles jumped to attention. "Sir, I have question. When is the earliest drill we our going to have. So I know how soon to prepare the security teams." (Reply Remae) "Alright, Sir!" Niles said, putting all of the information into the PADD. (Reply Remae, Any) (Posted by Niles George) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin - Deck 1, Observation Lounge - Lieutenant JG Christopher Adams - 1507) Lieutenant Christopher Adams had been sitting in the Captain's Chair when he was summoned to the Observation Lounge by Commander Remae Ktell. After having one of the senior officers take over command, Adams was now standing around the conference room table with Ensign Detron Trei and Ensign Niles George waiting for the first officer to arrive. After a few minutes, he arrived and Adams took a seat at the table. The commander started the meeting with the order to go to double shift and yellow alert until further notice. Adams made a mental note that he would have to set that up when he got back to his duty station. He then went on to explain his expectations for the new Acting Tactical Chief and Acting Chief of Security. "Along with weapons," stated Commander Remae. "We also have defensive systems and other systems to consider and that's where Lieutenant Adams comes in as Chief of Operations... once we're engaged in the battle, we won't be going anywhere, as soon as we're engaged I want to be able to transfer warp power to the shields with a moment's notice, is this possible?" "The shield emitters only have so much throughput, so we aren't going to get too much more out of them," explained Adams. "However, if we do have a main power failure, that would be a good backup. In fact, we have three warp cores, so you might say we have three back ups. I'll talk to Lieutenant Matrix and get his crew working on it right away." (reply any) "Okay," continued the first officer. "Is there any questions you want to ask me? Comments? Problems? Recommendations?" Ensign Niles spoke up. "Sir, I have question. When is the earliest drill we our going to have. So I know how soon to prepare the security teams." Adams was already going over the possible drills he could set up in his head and was ready to get started. He looked to the first officer to find out when that would be. (reply Remae) "Alright, Sir!" Niles said, putting all of the information into the PADD. (reply Trei, Remae, any) (posted by Jason French) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin - Deck 1, Bridge - Lieutenant JG Christopher Adams - 1829) The bridge was silent with only the frantic activity of the crew. On the view screen, the warp effect caused the stars to streak across as the Paladin raced towards Betazed at the front of the Battle Group. The ship was on yellow alert, all crew at duty stations. There was much preparation that had to be done before the ensuing battle. Seated at the operations workstation, Lieutenant Christopher Adams was hard at work coming up with a series of situations for their up coming drills. About an hour ago he had informed the crew that everyone was now on double shifts until further notice. Complete with his work, he turned around to look at Commander Remae Ktell seated in the command chair. "I think I have some scenarios created for the battle drills, Sir. I'm sending them to your console." (reply Remae) (posted by Jason French) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin - Deck 43, Engineering Sky Bridge - Lieutenant JG Christopher Adams - 2029) Lieutenant Christopher Adams walked out of the hallway into the cavernous engineering deck. This was the first time he had visited the new Sky Bridge since the refit of the Paladin. He walked over to the railing and looked down to the base of engineering several decks below. In the distance the three warp cores, now sitting at an angle, could be seen; two pulsing and the other dark. It appeared that the engineering crew was just as busy as the crew up on the bridge. The tension was thick as the impending battle was foremost on everyone's mind. Adams wandered around the bridge for a while until he spotted the chief engineer. Lieutenant Steven Matrix's brow appeared to furrow as he was overlooking some of the engineering read outs. "Hello, Chief," hailed Adams approaching the lieutenant. (reply Matrix) "I have a request from Commander Remae," explained Adams. "He wants to be able to switch warp power to the shields at a moments notice. I tried to explain to him that the shield emitters only have so much throughput, but I thought I would bring this request to you. The thought is that we won't be traveling far during battle, so we should be able to use the extra power for the shields. What do you think?" (reply Matrix) (posted by Jason French) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin - Deck 43, Engineering Sky Bridge - Lieutenant Steven Matrix - 2029) With the hustle going on, Matrix hadn't noticed the second officer enter engineering. The CEO had been reprogramming the intermix injector sequences and supervising a few other projects. "Hello, Chief," hailed Adams approaching the lieutenant. Matrix startled and was visibly annoyed at the interruption. As Matrix turned to scold the interrupter he stopped after recognizing the second officer. Matrix smiled, "Hello Lieutenant." Matrix put down his PADD and gave the second officer his full attention, "What can I do for you sir?" "I have a request from Commander Remae," explained Adams. "He wants to be able to switch warp power to the shields at a moments notice. I tried to explain to him that the shield emitters only have so much throughput, but I thought I would bring this request to you. The thought is that we won't be traveling far during battle, so we should be able to use the extra power for the shields. What do you think?" Matrix smiled and in his best Scottish accent, "Aye, Lieutenant he does, does he? How does the Commander expect me to change the laws of physics?" (Reply Adams) Matrix pointed to the secondary engine display as he proceeded to update the second officer, "Well Lieutenant, if you look over to this display or over to the third warp core below, you'll notice its dark. Under normal conditions we don't have a need to use the third core. Since the main computer has been staged for the comm process we can't bring up the tertiary core." (Reply Adams) Matrix continued, "Before the refit your...or should I say, the Commander's request would have been impossible. We have augmented the power relays with the ability to feed shield modulation inducers at a sustainable level if needed. Mr. Cohen has written a new program to automate this process with a command authorization from the bridge or here in engineering. We'll just need to have the third warp core online and ready for this to work. Its not been tested in battle, obviously, but our simulations show it should work, and we'll need about 12% of the main computer time to process the calculations." (Reply Adams) Matrix responded, "Lieutenant, I should warn you. Even with the refit and our simulations, its not been tried before. We may well destroy the power feeds to engineering, the warp core and the deflector array in the process. If that happens we're not only blind, but a sitting duck." A petty officer rolled to one side and fired all in one motion. The petty officer had a back-fire, for he had rolled into the line of a fire, and was hit in the head. Starfleet marines began to storm the bridge and one-by-one the security detail began to fall. Niles, observing the scene in front of him, had seen enough. “Computer, freeze program!” he yelled, very frustrated now, “Can anyone tell me what you all did wrong?” The room fell silent. “No one, no one can tell me?” again the room became quiet, “Let’s start from the beginning then.” Taking the PADD, which Niles had jotted down notes with, he began to explain the tribulations. “… and finally none of you gave any cover to another! Now let’s try this once again, but this time, get it right!” Niles enjoyed the feeling of command, but at the same time didn’t let to yell at lower rank crewmen. He knew how it felt to be a crewman, with no position to give orders. It wasn’t a very good feeling. Niles waited for everyone to get to their positions before telling the computer to restart and resume program. He had used the Paladin as the target of the boarding parties; for he knew the security personnel would be more comfortable with it. He had additionally added the Starfleet marines, from the drill a few days before. He had a premonition there was some cause the Captain and the First Officer put Starfleet marines, instead of some other hostile species. Niles stepped back and continued to examine the security prepare for the unexpected.
