The long ramp was easily a quarter of a kilometer in length, perfectly graded to an amazing 35-degrees down slope and at least 120 meters wide consistently. The entry that he and his team had found a few day earlier lay behind him, buried in the face of a mountain side that shielded the massive compartment from observation. The doorway was as large as the ramp was wide, and since they could not open it any other way, Svenik had selected a portion that had borne no marking and simply used one of their obsolete phaser pistols to burn a nice neat hole through the entry and allow them access. It had taken four energy packs to get through the thirty-meter thick structure. Preliminary tests could not accurately identify the material from which the door was constructed, but as the Rosenante was soon to arrive, Otto was hoping that their science team could decipher at least part of the resilience of the material for future study. Far ahead of him the ramp leveled off and opened out onto a large landing. This landing wasn't particularly large by comparison, only six hundred meters by six hundred meters. It was surrounded by a guard rail like structure, similar to ones that he had seen at other sites. It was his belief that they served to prevent people from simply walking off the edge. His wrist torch was enhanced by the mobile area lighting that Svenik had set up just the day before. A light on a headband also assisted in piercing the otherwise primal darkness that seemed inherent to underground finds of any nature. This darkness was massive however, in that it seemed to swallow up the light after only a few meters of illumination. Otto reached the base of the ramp and came upon Svenik and Rebecca, still working to set up the rest of the site survey equipment that would allow them to map out the extent of the massive area. Rebecca was presently preparing Felix and Fiona for flights. The two unmanned automated surveyor drones were small enough to be mobile, but large enough to require an antigravity sled to move them into position. Some time ago, Svenik had rigged a pair of the antigravity sleds to also act as a mobile command post. The pair of grav units that carried the drones, had been meshed together and a small mobile LCARS console, slavaged from a previous shuttlecraft that had long ago been removed from the site, served as the mobile command center. Basically, their best pilot, Rebecca moved the units into place, withdrew the lifts and after the set up was complete could operate the drones from the mobile platform rather than the Hab. It had been a genius modification that had allowed them to survey sites deep underground where the signal from the Hab couldn't reach. Rebecca was attaching running the last diagnostics on Felix, while Svenik was working on another project, the installation of a series of exceptionally bright spotlights, that could be used to help illuminate the site. He was currently calibrating their uplink with his outdated tricorder when Otto reached his location. "How long?" he asked simply. "Maybe another five minutes. I'm picking up a slight interference from some sort radioactive pulse. It's the same type as is trapped in the upper ionosphere." Otto raised one eyebrow at the Vulcan then asked, "Is it dangerous?" "Inconclusive. The tricorder can not give me an accurate count, but so far I can find no indications that we are even close to the danger threshold." Otto nodded. Then turned his wrist lamp towards the massive wall of darkness that surrounded them. His beam pierced that veil for a few hundred meters before becoming so diffuse that it became ineffective. Even after two days they still didn't have any ideas if there was anything at all in this cavern. They did know that it was massive, however. The tricorders were having difficulty scanning beyond a few thousand meters, so the exact dimensions of the chamber were completely unknown. Otto knew that even with a shout at the top of his voice that he was hearing no echo. That gave a pretty solid indication that the open area all around them was incredibly large. "Okay," he finally said, "let me know if that changes. I don't want to risk any potential injuries." The Vulcan nodded once, "Understood." "Okay, I'm ready." Rebecca called out, "They both read good, although I am getting some static on the video feeds. I think it's ambient though." Otto nodded, "Low level radiation. Svenik says it's not likely to be dangerous." Rebecca nodded. "Shall I send them out?" The excitement in her voice was just barely contained. "Just Felix. I want to keep Fiona in reserve until we know if the radiation might interfere with the flight controls." The doctor answered. "Okay, Felix it is." Although antigravity technology was widespread in the federation, it's affects upon undocumented machinery was unknown, so Felix and Fiona, were mechanically driven. They were egg shaped, packed with sensors and weighed a good 450 kilos each. At the 'top' of the egg, were two variable pitch rotor blades made of warping memory metal. They spun counter to each other to offset the torque of the lift that the pair of blades generated when activated. Six ultra powerful spotlights were embedded into the body of the drones, each in a semi-fixed position, but each illuminating an arc of 40-degrees along both the horizontal and the vertical axis. "Lights on." Rebecca stated and Otto squeezed his eyes closed to prevent himself from being blinded. "Activating rotors." An electrical hum, just barely perceptible sounded, before the slight whooshing, hiss of the pair of rotors drowned it out. With a flick of the switch, Felix rose from his landing cradle and took to the air in a single smooth motion. Even with his eyes closed, Otto could feel the light pass over him and behind him, as the drone cut into the darkness surrounding the platform. He turned then, opening his eyes to see the now shrinking drone as it slipped through the air with out a sound. The light's appeared to give it an unearthly glow, an almost surrealistic whiteness that reminded the aging scientist more of an angel's halo than a series of distinct spotlights. Then Svenik activated the spotlight assembly he had been calibrating. They were bright, almost six-times as bright as Earth's sun, yet somehow their beams did not peel away the darkness, instead they only seemed to pierce it in straight shafts of brilliant white light. The end of a few of them fell upon some massive structure deep inside the cavern, but none of the beams seemed to reach the other side. "This place is huge." Rebecca stated. "You are statement only enhances the obvious truth," Svenik replied in a typical Vulcan manner. "perhaps you should provide us with..." The flash of blue light was brighter than anything that Otto had ever seen. It begun far away and in a ring-like nebulae's corona expanded rapidly to engulf first the drone and then a moment later the Archeological team. For Otto, everything was now clear. He understood everything, then he slipped into darkness. (reply none) Daniel Greene ------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Bridge, CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid-Day 3- 1150) Ahmed sat on the Bridge as the stars streaking passed the Rosenante compressed back into the sparkling pinpoints as that ship dropped out of warp and entered into the Xega System. The system was one of the most unusual that Ahmed had ever seen. The planet was only marginally class M, and with only a little more effort from the Orange sub giant that it orbited would become a Class N world, completely incapable of sustaining life. The thin atmosphere was breathable, however, and as the planet orbited it's celestial anchor point, a cloud of ionized upper atmosphere trailed behind it into the cold depths of space. Normally planets this close to such a star would have been scorched by the stellar heat and radiation that constantly threatened to engulf it. But in some strange unknown machination, the planet was still harboring life, although admittedly scarce and uncommonly resilient. The Archeological team was a transplant. "Take us into a standard orbit Mister Jackson, if you please." The Captain ordered, all the while marveling at the raw beauty that was present in the orange star. (reply Jackson) As the Rosenante approached, Ahmed could barely make out the small scars where there had once been massive cities. They appeared as dark patches, usually near the shores of long evaporated riverbeds or oceans. There were hundreds of them and Ahmed could tell that was the main draw for those working on this world, despite the inherent dangers. The starship settled into her orbit, with a grace that most ballerinas would envy and Ahmed couldn't help but smile as the orbit was locked in. "Mister Jackson, see to it that the shuttles are getting ready for their runs. You can pilot down the first away team." (reply Jackson) "Mister Raschen open a channel to the Survey team." Ahmed then ordered. (reply Raschen) "On screen" Ahmed replied. The image of the mostly brown and orange planet was replaced by the image of a middle-aged woman with auburn hair and dark eyes. She was attractive and endearing, especially with the freckles that were scattered across her fair skin. =^=Hello Rosenante,=^= she said, =^=This is Doctor Sarah Parker-Redmond at Xega II Ground station. It's good to have you here.=^= She smiled a full toothy smile of sincerity. =^=It's hard to believe it's already been a year.=^= "We're glad to be here Doctor." Ahmed replied with his own smile, "Xega III, is an exciting place. I know my crew and I are looking forward to helping out a bit. Is Doctor Toenkampf there?" =^=Sorry Captain, no. He's at one of the new sites, doing some cataloguing along with Doctors Svenik and Stokes. They won't be back to the Hab for a couple of hours, just short of nightfall. But you and you're people are welcome to come down and get started. I'm dying to hear the latest news and gossip.=^= Ahmed chuckled. "Well let me see if I can send you a couple of my most notorious Gossip mongers, doctor." He replied, "I'll send down some of my senior officers to help start the coordination for the resupply, as well as a couple of the medical personnel to discuss things with you." =^= Sounds good captain. See your people soon. Xega III out.=^= The scene returned to the planet and Ahmed turned to Caskie. "You, Jackson, Rixx, Matrix, Ichijo, Lopez, Raschen, Benoit, and Remey will need to be on the surface, coordinating the mission. Take Rosenbauer also for additional security. Once you're down and ready, we can send down the supply shuttles." (reply Caskie, Jackson) Daniel Greene ------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Bridge, COPS, Lt Thomas Jackson - Day 3 - 1152) Tom had enjoyed his stint at the Helm. It was also an excellent opportunity for Robbie Smith and Lt Yalix to run OPS and get some needed department head experience. The had arrived in the system. Ahmed Salid spoke "Take us into a standard orbit Mister Jackson, if you please." Tom's fingers flew over the console. The Mighty Rose slowed to impulse power. They assumed a standard orbit about Xega II Charlie Raschen opened a link with the Xegan ground team. The normal hub bub of the bridge quieted down as all were listening to the conversation. The arrangements to get to the surface had been concluded. The landing coordinates had been shunted to each shuttle as Tom listened in. "Mister Jackson, see to it that the shuttles are getting ready for their runs. You can pilot down the first away team" the Captain ordered. Tom smiled and replied "Aye Aye Sir" and turned his helm position over to Chief Sheridan who, despite being the crusty old fart he was, was also interested in the mission. Tom trusted him completely and knew the Rose was under a good man's control. Raschen, the FO and Jackson left for the shuttles. Tom wondered idly if things would be quiet this time out. Somehow, he wasn't so sure (reply: Any) (posted by: Bill) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Training center - SO - Ensign Mike Rosenbauer - Day 3 -1152.5) Mike ducked under Cooper's jab and came up with a powerful right uppercut. The solidly built Ex-Ranger, jerked backwards, stretching out his body and allowing the momentum of the blow to carry him backwards for a few steps that absorbed a great deal of the momentum and power that Mike had put into the swing. Not to be outdone, the large black man arrested his backward momentum, brushed aside a left hook and landed a telling blow on his squad leader's solar plexus. Mike exhaled hard, and allowed himself to fold almost in half, before tucking into a forward drop roll, which carried him out of the way of the rabbit punch that would have sent him to the floor. Saint-Jean squealed like a little girl at the maneuver while T'Vyr and Mosh simply watched the display with attentive but analytical eyes. Tyrone, twisted his body in an incredibly fast athletic spin, building force and momentum as he whipped his left arm outward like a steel spring that had just been sprung. Mike blocked the blow, twisted his arm slightly and grabbed the larger man's wrist. A little leverage and a twist of his torso, sent Cooper over Mike's back and hard onto the training mat. Tyrone landed hard, the breath knocked from his body even as he attempted to absorb as much of the impact with his outstretched right arm as he could. Mike transitioned his hold smoothly, with the certainty of hours of practice and combat application. Within a moment, he had Cooper in a wristlock, his arm extended upwards, with pressure on his elbow, shoulder and wrist. Mike's left knee was pressed hard against the larger man's throat cutting off the blood flow to his brain. Tyrone tried to strong arm his way out of the hold, and as a testament to his raw power, would have succeeded if Mike hadn't already been prepared for the attempt and leaned his weight against the man as a counterbalance. Cooper wheezed and it was only until he turned brilliant red, that he finally submitted. Three sharp open hand slaps against the mat, and Mike immediately released his grip and stood up from his hold to allow his colleague some respite. Saint-jean whooped for joy. She was laughing out loud and looked to Mosh, the Bolian of the group, "Pay up blue skin." she said playfully, "I told you he'd yield rather than have his lights put out." For his part, Mosh rolled his baby blue eyes, gave out a huff and held out the credit reader that Eva than quickly pulled a few hundred credits from. T'Vyr, looked at his Bolian compatriot. "I also believe that I have won the bet that we made." He said with an even-toned straight face. "Yeah." Mosh sighed. "I suppose you did at that. What time and when?" "Tomorrow night, 1900. I am looking forward to your Plomek soup." Mosh nodded as Mike helped Cooper to his feet. "You okay Coop?" he asked. "Yeah, that was some sort of new reversal or something, eh?" He asked as he worked his right arm. "Something like that. I've known it for a long while, I've just not used it recently." Mike admitted. "More Ju-jitsu?" Tyrone asked as he removed his sparring gloves and helmet. Mike was doing the same. "Nope, Manipuri" "Maniwhatsy?" "Manipuri, it's from India." "When were you in India?" "I-" He was interrupted by a chirp. (USS Rosenante - Training center - SO - Ensign Mike Rosenbauer - Day 3 - 1155.5) =^=Caskie to Rixx, Matrix, Ichijo, Lopez, Benoit, Remey and Rosenbauer, please assemble in Shuttle bay One. Mr.. Rosenbauer please have your Rangers meet us there too. Caskie out.=^= Mike tapped the commbadge on his uniform and quickly replied. "We're on our way, Sir." He didn't need to give any orders to his people, they knew the drill and they were already following it, stowing the training gear and grabbing their phasers and tricorders from the mission locker. By the time he had toweled off and changed into his duty uniform, Eva was handing him his equipment and they were headed out the door towards the shuttle bay. (USS Rosenante - Shuttle Bay One - SO - Ensign Mike Rosenbauer - Day 3 - 1205) Mike and his squad moved into the shuttle bay and were not at all surprised to see several of the other officers present. With a sharp nod to the FO and the other officers, Mike gestured for his people to fall into formation. Technically it wasn't necessary for them to do so now that they were part of the fleet, but Mike had always wanted to encourage them to remain disciplined and to adhere to some of the more archaic rules of conduct that military personnel and the Rangers had adopted over the years. He fell in with his people and waited for the FO's briefing to begin. (reply any/All Present in shuttle bay) Daniel Greene ------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Bridge- CSEC- LT Chance Raschen- 1153.4) Chance sat on the Bridge as the stars streaking passed the Rosenante compressed back into the sparkling pinpoints as that ship dropped out of warp and entered into the Xega System. The system was one of the more unusual ones that Chance had ever seen. The planet was only marginally class M, and with only a little more effort from the Orange sub giant that it orbited would become a Class N world, completely incapable of sustaining life. Yet as a privateer hiding from the Cardassians and their allies it made a pretty good hiding place, if you were really that desperate. The thin atmosphere was breathable, however, and as the planet orbited its celestial anchor point, a cloud of ionized upper atmosphere trailed behind it into the cold depths of space. Chance watched the screen as the skipper gave helm commands, and Jackson replied and acted on those commands. As the Rosenante approached, one could barely make out the small scars where there had once been massive cities. They appeared as dark patches, usually near the shores of long evaporated riverbeds or oceans. There were hundreds of them and Raschen really didn’t totally understand what the main draw was for those working on this world, despite the inherent dangers. The starship settled into her orbit, with a grace that most ballerinas would envy. Then the captain again gave commands to Jackson who then did his duty. Chance’s attention snapped back when "Mister Raschen open a channel to the Survey team." Ahmed then ordered. “Standby sir” He said as he started punching commands into his console, fortunately maintenance fixed the communications controls on his station. “Xega Survey Team, Xega Survey Team, this is USS Rosenante.” =^=This is Xega Survey Team, we have been trying to reach you for the last few minutes Rosenante=^= “Sir, we have comms with them.” Raschen reported. (Reply None) Posted by Charlie ------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Bridge - FO - Cmdr Josh Caskie - Day 3 - 1155) Josh merely sat and watched as the Rose glided into her orbit around the planet and the Captain began issuing orders to Lts Jackson and Raschen. There was a smile on Ahmed's face as began giving out the orders. Half Josh suspected because he was looking forward to this mission and half because the Engineer in him saw something in the way that the Rose moved that Josh would never see in a million years. She was prosaic about ships. If they got her from A to B and managed not to break down on the way that was all Josh expected of them. She would never see the beauty in the warp core other than there were some pretty nice colours and it could sometimes be interesting to watch. However Josh could and did see beauty in other things. Unravelling a DNA strand and finding out the whys and wherefores of what made that person unique to themselves held beauty for her that probably no non medical person on the ship would understand. That thought reminded Josh almost immediately of something that she needed to discuss with the Captain. It was coming up for nine months now since she had become the FO on this ship and if she wanted to keep her medical license current she was going to have to schedule herself some time in Sickbay. However the Captain beat her to the punch. "You, Jackson, Rixx, Matrix, Ichijo, Lopez, Raschen, Benoit, and Remey will need to be on the surface, coordinating the mission. Take Rosenbauer also for additional security. Once you're down and ready, we can send down the supply shuttles." Josh smiled and nodded. "Aye Sir." "Very well gentlemen, we have our orders, let's go. Mr Raschen please have a security team meet us in the shuttle bay." Walking into the turbolift Josh waited until both of them had joined her and then sent it on its way towards Shuttlebay One. (Reply Jackson and Raschen and all on the away team.) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Deck 8, Mess Hall - ACSO Louis Remey - Day 3 - 1156) Louis was taking his lunch in the mess hall and discussing past exploits with two other crewmen, scuttlebutt was that the ship would be at Xega III soon and he might be called out at any time so he was making the most of his time by tearing through a ribeye dinner in celebration. "So what mountains did you climb on Earth?" The yeoman who had just joined the table with Louis and another two crewmen asked, she had overheard part of their conversation as she was walking past to the buffet earlier. Louis looked over to regard her with a smile and nearly choked on the mouthful of replicated steak he was chewing. In her early twenties the red headed young woman was a bombshell who was showing a tantalizing bit of cleavage, her hourglass figure and beautiful face were a heart stopper. Louis also loved long hair and she had that in abundance, it fell over her shoulders and several inches down her chest in in undulating waves. The scientist was a bachelor by choice having never married but had participated in several flings in his time and was no stranger to the female persuasion. He also didn't think of himself as a dirty old man being only in his mid forties but twenty years difference in age normally was considered a bit too much. He found that age difference however wasn't enough to overlook the possibilities. Swallowing the steak as she placed her tray on the table and sat down demurely he chased it with a sip of water flavored with a lemon wedge, the other two men at the table momentarily forgotten. "Ah... Oh! Everybody that is anybody climbs Everest eventually." He started. "I branched out as much as possible though, the Andes, Sierra Nevada's, Mount Kilimanjaro, the Ural mountains. You name it." He gave her a lopsided grin. "I tried to climb as many as possible during leave in my time though I had to tail off a bit after my accident several years ago." ~She's got to be spoken for you dolt, why are you grinning like an idiot?~ Ran through his mind as she took a drink of her iced tea, at least it looked like iced tea. Full lips, a button nose. ~Stop it you old fool!~ "I think it's fascinating." She said with a grin. "I'd love to do something like that but don't want to try it alone and I haven't been able to find anyone with the time to teach me." "You haven't?" He was genuinely shocked. "How long have you been on the ship?" "Just a couple of months," She answered. "By the way my name is Samantha, Samantha Barrett." "Loius Remey." He answered simply. "What about your time in the Academy? No one in there you wanted to take you on an outing?" She wrinkled her pretty nose. "No, I hung out with the brainy but physically conservative crowd mostly, by the time I found a guy who was interested it was almost time for graduation." His ears perked up at that. ~Unattached?~ "I'd love to have an older man show me the ropes as a teacher, you know a mentor... sort of a father figure I could trust. You spend a lot of time in the out of doors alone after all and that makes a girl vulnerable." His swelling chest suddenly deflated. ~Father figure? Rats!~ Still she was interested and if she wanted a safe, elderly gentleman to show her around why not? "I..." His combadge suddenly activated. =^= Caskie to Rixx, Matrix, Ichijo, Lopez, Benoit, Remey and Rosenbauer, please assemble in Shuttlebay One. Mr Rosenbauer please have your Rangers meet us there too. He glanced to his nearly empty plate and speared the last morsel of meat from where it nestled between a lump of mashed potatoes and a few scraggly green beans then stuffed it in his mouth. "So where can I find you if we get an opportunity?" He swallowed the mouthful of half-chewed meat as he rose from the table and wiped his mouth with the napkin then grabbed up his tray for disposal. "Science, ACSO's office. I just came on board a few days ago." "I'll see you later then, I work on deck seven for the CEO's office. I'm a yeoman on that deck." She gave him a chaste smile as he paused before her just for an instant. "It's a date then." He said quickly. "Look me up anytime. Maybe we can find some good mountains to climb on Xega III, got to go." Turning to Bass and Xerich who was an Arcturian he waved. "Later gents." He dropped his tray in the disposal on the way out then broke into a trot until he came across a knot of people milling in the hallway and slowed, he didn't wan to be late for his first away mission. (USS Rosenante - Deck 13, Shuttlebay 1 - ACSO Louis Remey - Day 3 - 1201) Dropping quickly in at the bay office he requisitioned a science tricorder then hotfooted it to the small group that was assembling before one of the shuttlecraft. The first officer was one of them, she was the only one of the group he recognized except the CSO of course. The rest of the officers named in her call were unfamiliar to him. Sidling up to them he nodded at the group then draped the strap for the tricorder around his neck and awaited further orders. He was glad he moved to the ops station from the security one after he opened communications with the survey team. It was just that the operations station was large enough to monitor both, operations and security, side by side. At the security station, due to its more mission specific design, he had to constantly tab through different screens to do both.
