The slight hum of activity was persistent here, indicating a deeper seated desire by the crew to get underway. They were all anxious to get back out to the wider universe and do something other than fight for a change. The Rosenante was just awaiting their final authorization to depart dock. They had their orders, which Ahmed would be sharing shortly with the crew, but for now there was the boring waiting game that always seemed to take place when a ship and her crew were ready to leave the slips. He took a moment to look around the Bridge, newly repaired after the Battle with the Borg, it looked as clean and fresh as the day he assumed command. some of the senior crew were here, while others were elsewhere putting the final touches on small projects that needed to be complete before they could truly depart. With a nod, Ahmed gave T'Larah a nod. "Why don't you pilot her out of dock Mister Parker? he asked over his shoulder, since Lieutenant Dralar has returned to Skorria on official business, that leaves you a fine opportunity to keep those piloting skills of yours sharp." (reply Parker) Ahmed then turned to Raschen at the operations Station. "Mister Raschen, hail the Yard master and get us clearance to depart, I'm getting antsy sitting here in dock when there's a perfectly good universe out there to explore." (reply Raschen) Ahmed smiled as he pressed the intercom button on the armrest of his command chair. "Attention all hands, this is the captain speaking. As you are all aware, we are scheduled to depart Starbase Geneva shortly. We have received orders to conduct a thorough shakedown of all ship's systems due to the extent of the damage that we sustained at Dovek II. We have then been told that we can proceed to sector 6309, to begin a series of surveys." His smiled broadened. "In anticipation of our success, we will be conducting these two missions simultaneously. So all section leaders and department heads report readiness to depart. Salid out." He turned to look at T'Larah and then quipped, "It's more efficient to do it this way." (reply all, Raschen, Parker, Sullivan) Daniel Greene ------------------------- (USS Rosenante-Bridge-COps-LT Chance Raschen-1103) The Rosenante was just awaiting their final authorization to depart dock, but for now there was the boring waiting game that always seemed to take place when a ship and her crew were ready to leave the slips. He took a moment to look around the Bridge, newly repaired after the Battle with the Borg, it looked as clean and fresh as ever. Some of the senior crew were here, while others were elsewhere putting the final touches on small projects that needed to be complete before they could truly depart. Chance was getting reacquainted with the operations station. Chance remembered when he first set foot on the Rosenante. His privateer vessel at the time, Star Hawk, had been badly damaged in a battle while en route to rendezvous with the Rosenante to be an Operations Officer. Raschen was given a rehabilitation transfer from the USS Dennison after he got busted back down to Ensign (jg) on the charge of mutiny during the last days of the civil war. Funny thing was, it happened before he defected to the 52nd. Anyway, Raschen was rescued by the Rosenante, Captain Salid was the First Officer at the time. Chance's revelry was interrupted when he heard the skipper call out "Why don't you pilot her out of dock Mister Parker? Since Lieutenant Dralar has returned to Skorria on official business, that leaves you a fine opportunity to keep those piloting skills of yours sharp." Raschen had just returned his focus on his duties when Ahmed directed "Mister Raschen, hail the Yard master and get us clearance to depart, I'm getting antsy sitting here in dock when there's a perfectly good universe out there to explore." Facing toward the center of the bridge "Roger that skip" He replied before turning to his console and punching in the correct commands to have the conversation be on audio only. "Geneva port control, this is Rosenante. Request permission to get underway and proceed out past space doors." "Rosenante, this is port control. Stand-by tell we confirm receipt of your sailing orders." "Rosenante standing by.". Chance then said to the captain, "Sir, control wants us to stand-by till the check to make sure they have received our sailing orders." (Reply Salid, any iyw) "I hand carried copies to port control, Base Commander, and the Fleet Commander's office. I even had them sign our log stating that they received a copy." (Reply any) Just then in his ear piece, Raschen heard =^=Rosenante, this is Port Control. You are cleared to proceed out Space doors. Doors are opening at this time. Safe journey.=^= "Thank you Control. Leave the lamp burning for us. Rosenante out.". Then turning to face Salid "Sir, we are clear to get underway." (Reply Salid) Ahmed smiled as he pressed the intercom button on the arm rest of his command chair. That was when Chance went back to work at his console while the skipper gave his 'here we go' speech to the crew. "Attention all hands, this is the captain speaking. As you are all aware, we are scheduled to depart Starbase Geneva shortly. We have received orders to conduct a thorough shakedown of all ship's systems due to the extent of the damage that we sustained at Dovek II. "Sir, operations ready to get underway." Chance stated. (reply Salid, any iyw) (Posted by Charlie ------------------------- (USS Rosenante - CMO's Office - Main Sickbay - CMO - Cmdr Josh Caskie - Day 1 - 1105) It was funny how comfortable Josh felt. More than a year aboard the Boudicca, and a couple of years before that out of this office and it still felt like home. Yes there were certain changes. Most of the equipment was newer and Josh offered up a prayer of thanks to whomever was responsible for that. Staff had changed too. Kitty and Nate were still here but Kitty was a newly minted doctor now and M'pak had unfortunately been called back to the Klingon Defence Force. That meant that Josh would have to appoint a new Chief Nurse before long but it wasn't urgent, at least not right at this minute. She had the time to look around, study the candidates and take the time to make up her mind. The one thing she had found that had driven her crazy was that whoever had authorised the sickbay updates had included the newest holographic EMH as standard and Josh hated it with a vengeance. She was going to have to speak with Cmdr Matrix soon and see if it was possible to reinstall the old Mark 1 version that she had kept. That however could wait for another time. Suddenly the shipwide comm channel opened and she heard the captain speaking. "Attention all hands, this is the captain speaking. As you are all aware, we are scheduled to depart Starbase Geneva shortly. Tapping the comm channel on her desk she grinned. "Sickbay here. We're good to go. Caskie out." (No reply needed) (Posted by Marilyn) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante – Bridge – FO – Commander T’Larah Sullivan – 1113) T’Larah noted the ‘brand-new’ appearance of the bridge after her near reconstruction. She also noted the squeak in the First Officer’s seat leather as she sat down. ~Took me months to get that out of the chair, and now it’s back.~ Ahmed gave T'Larah a nod. "Why don't you pilot her out of dock Mister Parker? he asked over his shoulder, since Lieutenant Dralar has returned to Skorria on official business, that leaves you a fine opportunity to keep those piloting skills of yours sharp." As Mister Parker prepared to get the ship underway, the Captain turned his attention to other ship’s business. "Mister Raschen, hail the Yard master and get us clearance to depart, I'm getting antsy sitting here in dock when there's a perfectly good universe out there to explore." Soon all stations stood ready to depart. (Reply any stations not reported in) “Sir all stations report ready.” (Reply Salid) “Thank you sir.” ~ After all this could be one of my last times on board the Rose for some time.~ “ Mister Parker all thrusters free, take us out.” She said. (Reply Parker, Salid, any) (Posted by Todd) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Bridge - COUNS Parker Davis - Day 1 - 1114) "Why don't you pilot her out of dock Mister Davis?" The Captain asked, and Parker was surprised. He could technically pilot a craft, and might be asked to at one point, but he wasn't the regular substitute for Dralar. "Since Lieutenant Dralar has returned to Skorria on official business, that leaves you a fine opportunity to keep those piloting skills of yours sharp," the Captain continued. One didn't argue when the Captain asked you to do something so direct, and it wasn't in Parker's nature to pass up an opportunity like this, anyway. It was doubtful that the counselor would ever be asked to pilot the ship again. ~Especially if you crash it into a worker bee or something...~ "Aye, Sir," he answered as he rose and walked over to Dralar's normal seat. He sat down, took a deep breath and let it out slowly, and fell into the rhythm he had established when doing similar activities on the Holodeck and in his training. It was a bit like driving a 1957 Chevrolet, he thought. Once you knew where the controls were, and understood how the car reacted, everything fell from there. ~Thrusters on standby,~ he noted. ~Docking clamps engaged but in hovering position, ready for disengage...~ he tapped a few displays and read the statuses. ~All personnel cleared from hull boundary areas. Impulse thrusters set on high sensitivity.~ He pulled up his positioning gauge. ~There, that's the one I like. Nice and small increments...~ He looked back for a brief moment before getting a nod from Salid, and he said verbally, "Disengaging docking clamps. Engaging fine-distance thrusters. Reverse at two meters per minute...engaging aft fine-distance thrusters as well as forward...we're in all wheel drive now, Sir," he said, doubting anyone but him would get the reference. "Ahead full fine-distance thrusters, thirty meters per minute...we have cleared all four docking clamps. Altering pitch angle to 15 degrees. Engaging thrusters, 1/4 speed. We should be clear of the dock in...3...2...1...We're clear, Sir. Engaging at full impulse to gain enough distance from the dock to allow for warp, on your command." (reply Salid) "Aye, Sir," he said, pride evident in his voice. He was never above trying--and succeeding--at something new. (reply any) (posted by Morgan G) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante – Bridge – CTAC Lt. sg Ben Soma – 1115) Ben was at the tactical station just as eager as everyone else to get back into open space, the Rose was ready for a shake down cruise and he was looking forward to seeing how well she did after her extensive repairs. Time to see how well everything had been put back together. His diagnostics of the tactical systems came back with no anomalies. The Captain called for status updates from all stations as well as clearance to leave space dock, the time had come to head out once again. He waited as reports were given and Chance got the authorization to cut lose. "Tactical stands ready." He reported when the time came. The reports continued to come in while Parker maneuvered then clear of the starbase. Ben was glad to be back where he belonged, this was were he was most comfortable. He glanced around the bridge and wasn't surprised to see that most of the bridge crew looked as happy as he was to be underway again. Shore leave had been good but it was time to get out and see what was out there again. (reply any) (posted by Milo Young) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Deck 3, Main Security Office, Lieutenant sg Sanok, 1116) Now that the Rosenante was repaired and ready, Sanok was surprised at how much he was looking forward to being back and heading out into space again. The Borg mission had been a success, something he never thought would happen, and the leave time to rescue Marah had been an adventure, but it was most agreeable to be performing normal duties again. During the down time, there had been many personnel transfers, though the core group had remained. One of the changes had been Lieutenant Raschen moving to operations, while Sanok was made Chief of Security. This was something else that was unexpected. Sanok preferred security over tactical, as he would often be free to be on various parts of the ship in performing his duties, and not stuck on the bridge at the tactical station. Stuck had been the word he used to poke some fun at Ben, as Sanok liked being able to travel around the ship and not be limited to one place. Much of his time the last few days had been spent in meetings, especially with the new transfers, setting up duty schedules, and delegating authority and tasks to other security personnel. It would take time for everyone to develop the rapport needed to work together as a unit, and for Sanok to become accustomed to his new position, but it was something to which he was looking forward. After the captain made his announcement to the crew that the Rosenante was leaving Geneva, Sanok did a quick check of the monitors and readouts in the main office. Everything was normal, and all stations had reported as ready. It wouldn't go over well to have something wrong the minute they were leaving. Sanok activated his comm and sent a message to the bridge that they were a go. Other than a quick shakedown, their next assignment was in sector 6309, doing some sort of survey. All in all, a nice, peaceful, routine mission. (reply any) (posted by Bob B. ------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Bridge, CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid, Day 1 -1117) "Sir, control wants us to stand-by till the check to make sure they have received our sailing orders." "You filed them didn't you lieutenant?" Ahmed asked. "I hand carried copies to port control, Base Commander, and the Fleet Commander's office. I even had them sign our log stating that they received a copy." Raschen said. "Well then there shouldn't be any problem with them clearing our departure." Ahmed replied, growing a little irritated by the lack of efficiency that yard control seemed to have these days. "Sir, we are clear to get underway." "Very good. Lieutenant." Ahmed replied and then made his mission briefing to the ship's crew over the intercom. He then commented to Sullivan about the efficiency of combining their two missions. "Indeed," was her usual response. It was a response that he had come to respect and appreciate. A few moments later, she reported, "Sir, all stations report ready." "Take us out mister Sullivan." Ahmed replied. “Thank you sir.” she replied in a slightly uncharacteristic tone of voice. “ Mister Parker all thrusters free, take us out.” The captain sat smiling in his command chair for a short while as he watched the Rosenante, lift and move away from the slip at Geneva, the first time in over a month that she had been under her own power. In the slip nearby, the final repairs were underway aboard the Boudicca, and Ahmed admitted to himself mentally, that he was going to miss seeing that ship. Still they had spent enough time together and it was time for the Rosenante and her crew to get out into the depths of space and to conduct some exploration of their very own. When they had moved out of the dock controlled space, Ahmed smiled as Sullivan gave the command to go to warp speed on their way to Sector 6309, an as of yet uncharted section of the galaxy just beyond Romulan space, adjacent to their own Federation Border. "Mister Sullivan you have the Conn. you can begin the space worthiness inspections at your leisure. I'll be in my ready room." (reply Sullivan) Ahmed rose from his command chair and stepped towards his ready room door, before pausing and adding. "I think it would be a good idea to hold a senior staff meeting for all department heads and their assistants in the Observation Lounge tomorrow at 0800 hours. we will be discussing all readiness reports, shakedown results and the upcoming mission. I want to hear survey plans from operations, sciences, and engineering, so that we can fulfill all our space worthiness and exploration mission criteria in parallel. I also want to see security and tactical analysis of our current crew as well as additional operational contingencies for medical as well." (reply Sullivan) Ahmed then turned back towards his ready room, determined to prepare his own series of suggestions for the ship's day-to-day operations. (reply Sullivan, and All) Daniel Greene ------------------------- (USS Rosenante – Bridge – FO – Commander T’Larah Sullivan – 1120) Parker executed his orders diligently. He navigated the Rose in one smooth arc through the doors of Starbase Geneva. T’Larah was sure that the ship was moving as gracefully as a swan, and giving the onlookers from the observation deck one hell of a show. They were now clear of the station, and she gave the order to increase speed. “Increase speed to one quarter impulse power.” She ordered. (Reply Parker) Soon enough they were well outside dock controlled space. “Set course for Sector 6309, warp two.” (Reply Parker) “Engage.” (Reply Parker) There was only a brief instant of the feeling of a speed change before the inertial dampeners fully kicked in. "Mister Sullivan you have the Conn. you can begin the space worthiness inspections at your leisure. I'll be in my ready room." “Aye, sir.” "I think it would be a good idea to hold a senior staff meeting for all department heads and their assistants in the Observation Lounge tomorrow at 0800 hours. we will be discussing all readiness reports, shakedown results and the upcoming mission. I want to hear survey plans from operations, sciences, and engineering, so that we can fulfill all our space worthiness and exploration mission criteria in parallel. I also want to see security and tactical analysis of our current crew as well as additional operational contingencies for medical as well." The Captain said. “I’ll make arrangements, sir.” She responded. The Captain disappeared into his ready room to take care of some of his daily duties. “Mister Parker, I believe the Captain said that you have a meeting to get ready for in less than 24 hours.” She said in an even tone. (Reply Parker) “Thank you for your services, permission to leave the bridge granted.” She responded. T’Larah then sent a text-only message to all the department heads, detailing nearly verbatim what the Captain wanted for tomorrow’s department head meeting. “Helm, increase speed to warp five.” (Reply Parker, any on bridge) (Posted by Todd) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Bridge - Counselor Parker Davis - Day 1 - 1124) "Increase speed to one quarter impulse," the first officer ordered, and Parker's immediate reply was, "Aye, Sir." He smiled--he was having fun! He supposed it was a good thing for the Counselor to know how to fly the ship and get some practice doing so. After all, he was bound to be on the bridge a fair portion of every day. Every bridge officer should know how to pilot in case something should happen and their skill should be needed. "Set course for Sector 6309, warp two," Sullivan said. He pressed a few buttons and then stated, "Course set for Sector 6309, Sir." "Engage." He felt the inertial dampeners kick in as he was momentarily pushed back into his seat, and then eased back to his original position. The absurd thought occurred to him, in his excitement, that like the ancient concept of "the flying nun," he was now "the flying counselor." The Captain disappeared into his Ready Room and Sullivan must have sensed that he was having a little *too much* fun, because her next statement was, "Mister Davis, I believe the Captain said you have a meeting to get ready for in less than 24 hours." He felt slightly disappointed as he spun and replied, "Yes, Sir. Permission to leave the bridge, Sir?" "Thank you for your services. Permission to leave the bridge granted." ~So much for the flying counselor,~ he thought as he exited the Bridge and headed for the Counseling Offices. ~Oh, well. I'd probably look terrible in a habit, anyway.~ (reply none necessary) (posted by Morgan G) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Security Offices, ATAC/SC Ensign (sg) Jessica Signos, Day 1 - 1135) Jessica felt the slightest of vibration of the Rosenante has she pulled out of the slip and made her way a back into the vastness of space. Ever since Jessica was rescued from Section 31 hands she realized that all her senses picked up a more keen edge. Jessica did not know if this was do to the merger of her two personalities or just simple paranoia. Jessica picked up a PADD and started to work though it's contents. It was on the latest tactical upgrades made to the system. She went thought the information in great detail, trying to lose herself in her work. Now days it seemed the only way to get though the day. Once Jessica finished going though the data, she placed the PADD to the side and rubbed her temples. She knew what needed to happen. She made her way to the computer. "Computer start recording." The computer beeped its readiness. "Captain Salid, I know your schedule is busy, but I am in need..." She thought about on how to continue. "Of your council. I know you've wanted to talk to me for sometime, but the chaos of life seemed to think otherwise. In light of everything that has happened I think it's time for us to have that long awaited Chat. If it would please you, let me know what time and place would work best for you? " Jessica finished her message taking a deep sigh. She hoped the Captain would grant her an audience. Their was a great deal for the two of them to discuss. "Computer, Send message to the Captain's ready room." That was it the message was sent Jessica hoped she would have a response soon. She went back to her work, trying to banish the thoughts of how tattered her life had become. (reply Salid) (posted by Matthew Locke) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Ready Room, CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid, Day 1 -1136) Ahmed had been putting the finishing touches on his proposed route through the sector to grant the Rosenante the best use of her sensors the most efficiently, when his console chirped for attention. He placed his PADD on the tabletop and accessed his messages. There was a message there from Signos. [Captain Salid, I know your schedule is busy, but I am in need of your council. I know you've wanted to talk to me for some time, but the chaos of life seemed to think otherwise. In light of everything that has happened I think it's time for us to have that long awaited Chat. If it would please you, let me know what time and place would work best for you?] He gave a short nod to himself and then decided that Signos was right. He had indeed wanted to speak to her, and everything had conspired to prevent that. Duty, abduction, medical recovery, to name just a few. He would make the time for her now rather than later. Besides, it was best to clear any bad air between them sooner rather than later, although Ahmed hoped that there were no such issues. He tapped his commbadge, "Salid to Signos. Please report to my ready room." (reply Signos) Daniel Greene ------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Security Offices, ATAC/SC Ensign (sg) Jessica Signos, Day 1 - 1138) Jessica was busy analyzing another PADD, another new face to the crew of the Rosenante. When her com-badge chirped =/\= Salid to Signos. Please report to my ready room. =/\= Jessica had only sent her message to the captain a few short minutes ago. She was glad for the quick response. Quickly marking where she was in her task and logging out of ans securing the terminal where she was working. She made her way with all do haste to the Captain's ready room. (USS Rosenante, Captain Ready Room, ATAC/SC Ensign (sg) Jessica Signos, Day 1 - 1142) She pressed the chime and waited entry into the ready room. She waited for the Captain to acknowledge and start what was bound to be a interesting conversation. (reply Salid) (posted by Matthew Locke) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Outside Sickbay- Marah Neru- 1300) Marah was heading to sickbay, if she was going to be on the ship then she had to find something to occupy her time while Ben was on duty. Considering he was the chief tactical officer he was most likely never really of duty, he could be called to the bridge at anytime to deal with an emergency. Given she had an interest in xenobiology and had a working knowledge of basic medicine she figured the best place for her to fit in would be sickbay. She had no formal training and wasn't a starfleet officer but she hoped she could help out just the same. She stepped towards the door and entered the room, she took several minutes to just look around before venturing further in. This place was bigger then most hospitals she'd been in and better stocked, being in starfleet had it's advantages. She walked in a little further and noticed a nurse checking some cultures so she headed over to her. "Excuse me." Marah said. "I'm looking for your chief medical officer." The nurse looked at her and smiled. "Doctor Caskie's office is over there." She replied pointing. "Thank you." Marah said returning the smile. She headed towards the chief medical officers office hoping she wasn't going to disturb the doctor. She stopped just outside the entrance and knocked on the door frame. "Doctor Caskie." She said. Whilst it was all computerised nowadays and didn't actually involve any real paper it still unfortunately involved all the same actions as when it had. It still had to be read, signed off on and shunted off to the various people who needed to see it. Sometimes Josh wished it still involved actual paper, since hitting the delete key on a padd was nowhere near as satisfying as scrunching up an actual piece of paper and launching it towards an honest to goodness rubbish bin. Hitting the delete key for the 50th time today her attention was taken by a knock on her door frame. Looking up she smiled at the woman standing there. "Doctor Caskie. Do you have a moment or two to spare?" Josh got to her feet and ushered the woman into her office. "Of course I do, please come in and sit down. Can I get you anything to drink?" Marah looked around the office, everything was pristine. There was no clutter and even the displays seemed untouched, she was used to seeing such offices in various states of disarray, padds tossed about, clothes slung over chairs and tables, smudges on the consoles where the physician had been pointing out various sections of a scan or medical paper. Not wanting to waste any of Doctor Caskie's time she decided to get to the point. "Doctor Caskie." She said. "I was wondering if there was any way I could help you and your staff? I know I have no formal training and I'm not a starfleet officer but I do have basic understanding of medical practices, I can help with some of the minor injuries freeing up yourself and your staff for more severe cases." He in truth had been avoiding him. He was, after all, the person who had almost caused his death. And secondly, he was desperately busy rebuilding the communications division of the science department. Before this mission he would have been content to return to his life and forget about Maddox, forget that his friend ever existed, and continue 'droning on' through life. But now he was changed....more aware...perhaps more enlightened? No matter the reason why, he felt that he needed to see Andrew, and that it needed to happen in the Brig. He could have chosen a time when the man was working with others in his own division of the Science department, which on all accounts would be 'safer' than being alone with him. He chose this time instead for reasons he could not name. He requested permission to see the prisoner, which felt like a strange request to Joseph. He was granted fifteen minutes under strict guard, which was fine with him. He entered, and saw the human man sitting on his cot. ~Not human,~ Joseph corrected himself. ~An android, or something...~ "Hi, Andrew," he said, nervousness causing his voice to rise slightly. He was stalled...after the Borg incident, he had relatively little 'creative juice' for writing, and he didn't understand why. There were five other programs open, all of them running something he wasn't terribly interested in at the moment. ~I wonder if this kind of boredom is part of the new brain chemistry, or if I'm just in some kind of funk here...~ Suddenly, his console beeped, stirring him out of his thought process. He was getting a subspace transmission, and saw that it was from his father. "Dad," he greeted with a smile."Happy St. Patrick's Day in advance!" Liam grinned back at his son and said, "Happy St. Patrick's day to you too. How are you?" Eian shrugged. "We're on a new mission...plenty of excitement." Liam's grin faltered, but he said nothing of it. Instead, he nodded and said, "I'm sure you've got a lot to do." "How's Glenn?" "He left the Kelman this afternoon on schedule, and I'll have no other contact with him until two weeks from now--you know that." Eian tilted his head in concession of that fact. Once a cadet arrived at Starfleet Academy, there was a mandatory isolation period in which they had no communication with the outside world. "He'll do fine, Dad." "I've got no doubt. As long as he keeps his head on straight and doesn't get into any more trouble with girls..." Eian chuckled. His father continued. "He'll hopefully follow in our footsteps and join the hockey team." "We'll kick him out of the family if not," Eian responded, and laughed. "So how are you holding up? Empty nest now..." Liam nodded. "It's going to be a lot quieter." He smirked. "Think my hair will start reverting back to red?" Eian laughed at that, and shook his head. "No, Dad, I think once you start the graying process, it's generally moves along linearly in time. Though you could always dye it." Liam rolled his eyes. "Even if I did, I'd do it too gradually for you to notice. I'd rather skip the comments from the peanut gallery." "I'm here to serve," Eian answered jokingly. He grabbed a handful of small crackers from the bowl on his desk and asked, "So seriously, what are you going to do for fun?" His father shrugged, and shook his head. "I'm not sure, Eian. I might take up golf in the holodeck..." "I don't think now's the time to start learning. Don't you need to start that when you're 3 or something?" "Pshh," Liam brushed the comment off. "You're never too old to learn something new. Even if you're terrible at it, at least you're having fun." He met his son's gaze. "Eian, I want to share something with you." Eian snapped his glance back to the screen. He had been looking at his model ships. "What's up?" "This last mission you were on...I think you know how close you came to meeting God...being with your mother." Eian nodded slowly, frowning as the conversation turned from such light-hearted talk to something obviously far more serious. "Yeah," he agreed softly. "What I don't think you realize was afterward, you were just as close to spiritual death as you were to physical death before." "No, of course I realize that," Eian stated, slightly defensive. "You weren't there in the holodeck--you don't know what an amazing experience that was--" "Eian, listen to me. I'm not accusing you of ignorance of your own spirituality. I'm trying to explain something. There are two aspects to spirituality. One is the connection you have with God. The other is the connection you have with your own mind. Do you understand?" Still frowning, Eian nodded. "What does this have to do with anything?" "Your connection to God is restored. You're rebuilding the connection you have with your own mind. But there's something missing, and you'll never get closure until you understand what it is." Eian squinted in confusion, but said nothing. Liam pursed his lips and sighed. "I'm not sure I'm explaining this correctly..." He turned around and walked away. Eian stared at the screen, uncertain if his father was so pissed off that he had left, or if there was something else going on. A moment later, Liam returned with a large PADD. He activated it and scrolled through the contents, eventually bringing up a picture of himself and Eian's mother when they were much younger. "Eian, I was about your age here. I had just graduated from Starfleet Medical School. We had both been stationed in Ireland. We didn't know it, but there would only be about a year before we would be told that your mother had a degenerative condition. It would eventually make it almost impossible for her to conceive, but we got through it, and God gave us you--our miracle baby." Eian nodded slowly, still confused as to why this was relevant. "During this time in our lives, we were not mature. We were not established. We didn't have a lot of money. We were dedicated to our careers. But there was something more in us. The drive to start a family, to extend God's work to the next generation, to create something new. You can certainly relate to the desire to create something new." "Of course," Eian said, and smiled slightly. Liam smiled back, and scrolled through some more information on the PADD. Then he pressed a button and a song called, "I Am New" started playing. Eian realized that his father was helping him concentrate, putting the music on to allow him to focus on the lyrics and what he was saying. Only a parent could know exactly how to reach their child, Eian thought, and was suddenly almost overcome with gratitude for his dad. "The drive to start something new is what makes us both explorers," Liam told him. "The drive to start a family, or a relationship, is what makes us human." Eian nodded. "And the drive to link that relationship and family to God is what makes us faithful..." "That's right," Liam agreed. He looked meaningfully at his son. "I think you know where I'm going with this. Don't let that drive die just because it doesn't feel the same, Eian. You're not who you were," he mirrored the lyrics of the song. "You're new. Your hopes and dreams don't have to be." Eian almost felt like he would tear up, but he didn't. His dad was such an amazing person sometimes...the only person who could reach inside his soul and pull it out, putting it in front of his face so he could see. The same person who could just as easily give him a kick in the ass when he was falling down on the job. "I'm going to talk to Jessica, Dad." Liam nodded, satisfied. "Nothing needs to come of it. She may not be the right one...to be perfectly honest with you," he sighed, "I think your life would be more complicated if she ends up being the right one. And I'd like for you to have the easiest life possible. But I'm not driving, am I?" Eian shook his head. "And neither am I." "Then go let Him drive, and do it sooner rather than later. You never know when you might run out of time." With a final nod, Eian said quietly, "Thanks, Dad. I love you." "Love you too," Liam said, his voice artificially strong. Eian knew he was thinking of Grace, and that this conversation had probably been painful for his father. "I'll talk to you later." He cut the transmission. Eian stared at the blank screen for a moment before closing out of the window, and standing up. Why not, he no longer felt like the outsider he once was. Several minutes later the skipper strode into the observation lounge with a spring in his step. In his left hand he carried a PADD, while in his right he carried a hot steaming cup of coffee that bore the logo of the United Federation of Planets and carried the Rosenante's registry. "Good morning everyone," He greeted them as he made his way to the head of the table. He settled into his chair, placing the PADD and coffee where they were both easily within reach. He took a deep breath and then took a look around the table at those officers that were present. Of that area, Starfleet command has given us a patch of 2.5 million light-years to survey." "This is likely to be a very long term mission, one that will probably keep us out here for a year or more, depending on what we discover and what we encounter out here. That said, we will be beginning our initial survey by making three navigational sweeps of our assigned area, so that we can get an idea of what we'd like to begin surveying first." "Starfleet command has passed us some partial maps based on inferred stellar cartography taken from the Dyson array; the same array that warned us about the Borg incursion into the Dovek System. Of that, I'd like for Sciences to help put together some work into setting up experiments and surveys to allow us to start collecting data as soon as possible. Operations will need to begin detailed stellar mapping, with tactical and security keeping their eyes open for potential threats. They will also be responsible for potential threat assessments of any and all species that we encounter on our journeys." Chance made a note, then turned toward Tollian Yalix, and gave the Efrosian a nudge and quietly whispered “That goes at the top of our To-Do list.” (Reply Yalix iyw) Salid continued to speak "I will start us off by stating that the first object that I'd like to survey is an apparent rouge dwarf planet, roughly 1600 kilometers in diameter. It is currently moving through space, after I assume being thrown from its orbit by some unseen forces. We will adjust our course to intercept it and to begin surveys. The Object has been temporarily designated Rogue One, until a more suitable name can be decided upon. Starfleet command has given us the option to name the planet once we've completed our survey of the body." ~I’ve helped conquer planets, even saved some; but never helped name one before~ Raschen thought as he made another note on his PADD. "At warp six, I estimate it will take us 4 days to arrive at the planets current location which is travelling at nearly 600,000 kilometers per hour. We're going to map its trajectory, conduct geological surveys and we will be conducting away missions on the planet's surface, so I'll need mission plans, personnel suggestions and equipment requests before we arrive." Chance leaned over toward Yalix again “This is already getting more and more interesting, maybe we’ll luck out for a change and we wont get shot at.” He quietly said. (Reply Yalix iyw, any iyw) The captain paused. "Now let's hear where we are on our shakedown and departmental status." Chance was used to his department being one of the last, if not the last to report. So he was in no rush. It was like that when he was the head of tactical and then security. Hell, it was like that the first time he was the Ops Chief. Yes sir, Chance was beginning to develop a working habit that didn’t envolve killing. What was the universe coming to? When it did get to be time for the Operations Department to report Raschen spoke “So far we haven’t had any major problems to report. The biggest thing so far is that the programming on the sensor array we are testing sometimes sends tactical data to sick bay and scientific data to security. We have introduced a sub-routine to copy the data to the correct recipients until we can get it straightened out.” Chance then turned to face Sanok and requested “While I’m thinking about it. If its okay with you Lieutenant, I would like our hacker Petty Officer Wang from Cyber-Crime Analysis to assist us with this project.” (Reply Sanok) Once that issue had been handled, Raschen returned his attention to Salid. “Every thing else has been expected, minor, and in the process of being squared away sir.” (Reply Salid) (Reply Yalix, Sanok, Salid, any iyw) (Posted by Charlie) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Observation Lounge, CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid, Day 2 -0800) Ahmed strode into the observation lounge with a spring in his step. "Good morning Everyone." He greeted them as he made his way to the head of the table. He settled into his chair, placing the PADD and coffee where they were both easily within reach, although Ahmed realized he was much more likely to require the coffee before the device. There were also a few familiar faces, such as Fisher and Caskie, Raschen, Sanok, Soma, Matrix and O'Neill. Of his command crew only Sullivan remained, as Jackson had been transferred over to the Boudicca just before their departure. "Engineering is as full capability at this time. We have full impulse and warp capability, weapons are online and ready. However, we need to test all systems prior to a complete bill of health. I've outlined the plan of testing starting with propulsion, weapons testing and routine systems augmentation for the next few days." explained Matrix. If you want I can make that data available to you.” She responded. (Reply Matrix) (Posted by Todd) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Observation Lounge - ACEO Lt Eian O'Neill - Day 2 - 0804) Eian looked around the room at those attending, curious as to what the new officers would report. While he was very in-tune with the Security and Tactical departments, as part of his job was to use his expertise to coordinate service and upgrades for tactical equipment, he was relatively ignorant of the Science department. His background was tactical and while he had an interest in exploration, he dedicated very little of his already limited attention span to the intricate, in his opinion "tedious" work of collecting and analyzing data on anomalies. He much preferred to jump to the conclusion and decide how to act on it. He was eager to begin exploration in Sector 6309. A new, uncharted space was perfect for his own new beginning. Since his assimilation, Eian had experienced several profound changes in his life. The first was his redefinition of faith. Faith was no longer about a feeling he could consciously feel in his brain, or a 'good' emotion that overwhelmed him when he felt connected to God. Faith to him was now about the unknown. He didn't know what was going on with his body, and he knew no one may every know exactly how the Borg rewired his brain and managed to substantially alter his chemistry without altering his fundamental personality. The point, of course, was not how they did it. He didn't see himself as a victim, either. Instead, he saw this as one step in a guided path that God had set him on, and life was no longer about the result, but about the journey. He was reborn, reconnected, and re-empowered. The second was what had caused the first. The Borg truly did alter his mind such that he was forced to get used to the odd sensation of recalling, with photographic clarity, every moment of his past. ADHD had made him forgetful before, but it had not erased his life's memories. It simply blocked his ability to access them, never allowing his attention to focus on them for longer than a few microseconds. Now, however, his mind easily and sometimes unintentionally pulled them up to the front, and he had to learn how to control that 'flashback' phenomenon in order to function in everyday life. It was under control now, but he was still re-orienting himself in the way he thought. This was something that affected every moment of every day of his life. Finally, his body was altered. Implants were scattered around--one above his left eye, one on his forehead, one on his neck, several on his chest, and a few on each leg. These were permanent, as they were linked directly with his bodily functions. His left eye and right arm were replaced with prosthetics, which he had to learn to control. At first, they didn't feel like they were a part of him even though he could feel feedback from touch, temperature, and pain. The lower halves of both legs had been rebuilt, piece by piece, while Eian was awake. Normally the anesthetics he was given would have erased that memory, but the Borg really did a number on his head, and he often battled nightmares about watching his legs suspended in fluid, half-constructed. One aspect of his life that was also changed, but may not remain so, was that he hadn't spoken to Jessica for weeks. He had been avoiding her, something that would become impossible to do now that they were underway. He made a resolution to confront her...at least to figure out if she was on the same page as he. The Captain asked for suggestions as to personnel suggestions and equipment requests, but first he requested the department heads report on their statuses. He had plenty of personnel suggestions for Engineering. He had taken it upon himself to familiarize himself with the new crew, and he remembered all of their names and primary talents. He would let Lt. Matrix answer first, though, regarding the department status. For once in his life, he actually looked forward to hearing the information from each department, as he was curious what this new beginning held for all of them. (reply all) (posted by Morgan G) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Observation Lounge, CEO, Lieutenant Commander Steven Matrix, Day 2 -0807) Matrix sipped his morning chi tea while the Captain entered the room. Matrix had his customary PADD with him. Matrix looked around the room and noted new faces and those missing, specifically his friend Tom Jackson. It was going to be much different without Tom, but he smiled as he knew Tom was enjoying his new challenges as first officer. As Matrix listened to the Captain explain their current mission he was pleased to learn it was going to be primarily an explorer mission. It was welcome. Hopefully a routine mission without any fighting and extreme measures just to survive. As the Captain paused and asked for department status Matrix took the opportunity to speak first. "Good Morning Captain, everyone." started Matrix. "Engineering is as full capability at this time. We have full impulse and warp capability, weapons are online and ready. I'd like to ensure that the Rose is living up to her standards." asked Matrix. (Reply Eian O'Neill) "Commander Sullivan I would like the opportunity to coordinate the next phase of the warp testing with you. Antimatter adjustments at the time of engagement lends itself to better feedback on the control programs. I suspect we'll find that the lower warp testing data will show the need for some significant adjustments in the power feeds and antimatter flow. I'd like to avoid retesting at the higher warps if we can coordinate our efforts in this next phase of warp testing." said Matrix. (Reply Sullivan) "I should point out too that there are a number of non critical systems that still need to be turned up and tested. For example, many of the food replicators below deck 15 haven't been connected or tested. I've got three crews working on just that task now. I also understand that the consumables storage on deck 23 isn't keeping the proper temperatures in the primary hold. It turned out that the refit crews didn't install a second cooling unit. Once we get the materials replicators calibrated we can fashion a replacement and get that installed. That should happen later today." continued Matrix. (Reply any) "I have a laundry list of other items, but I can provide that information in the status brief report so everyone can review it at their leisure. Some of these will be an annoyance for some, but within a few days I'm sure between engineering and operations we'll have everything ironed out." replied Matrix. (Reply any) (Posted by Steve) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Observation Lounge - ACEO Lt Eian O'Neill - Day 2 - 0809) "Day two will incorporate phaser and torpedo testing. We plan on replicating a series of small tactical shuttles as targets using the new material replicators installed on deck 10. I would like to replicate six tactical shuttles, two each for phaser and torpedo command and control." said Matrix. Eian stepped in and explained. "We'll be using EPS power for this. The sensor units self-tune to whatever power flow and frequency is coming from their assigned EPS power manifold. When we initially tested this model of operation, the intermix ratios were creating some incredible feedback on our power relays. But after we adjusted for their frequencies and wrote a program that isolates the specific frequencies and sends a signal to the relays to, well, basically *not explode*, then we were able to route the power just fine, with no consequences on external systems. Though you may notice a drop in available backup data feeds for internal and external data transmission. We had to eat up some of our reserves in order to get this to work, and we're still working on that problem. In case of an emergency, I installed a kill switch for the entire thing that will return us to our normal sensor grid in 1.2 seconds." "Also, as far as engineering personnel and equipment requests," he spoke, only using his PADD as a speaking tool instead of a memory tool, "we have most of what we need in stock in Engineering, but I'm going to request a secondary weapons locker be installed on the upper Engineering deck. There's a tactical disadvantage that we discovered during the Borg attack that if we go into shipwide lockdown and have Corridors 2 and 3 sealed off on Deck 6, personnel servicing the navigational sensor array are trapped without access to weapons. Also, we've identified two Critical Level components that are not currently on the Critical Level component list because they're new items that don't have maintenance history. I've updated the list, and requested their addition to the spare parts catalog. Finally, as far as personnel goes, I've compiled a list of those who need to be certified to work on Critical Level components, those who I recommend for higher security clearance, and I've created a list of active working groups per system component that Lt. Matrix has signed off on." He placed the PADDs in front of him to show the Captain which one was which, not that he expected Salid to read them right now. "Also, as a kind of side-note, we have one officer who will require paternity leave in two months for a duration of one month until he can return to limited duty. Other than that, we expect to be fully manned for the duration of our tour." Eian passed that PADD to Sullivan, who would likely note it in the personnel log. It was a happy occasion for Ensign Rikkin's species, whose males carried the offspring for the final two months before their birth, to spend the first month bed-bound with their new child. Rikkin had spread the word throughout Engineering yesterday that he and his wife were expecting their third child. Eian found it fascinating that a species would transfer the fetus between the sexes, an evolutionary mechanism that kept the child alive millions of years ago on the Yikoni's home world. "We'll probably use the replicator on Deck 10 and replicate several, because the cooling units were left off the rotational pool item inventory as well," Eian explained. (room for more) "I have a laundry list of other items, but I can provide that information in the status brief report so everyone can review it at their leisure. Some of these will be an annoyance for some, but within a few days I'm sure between engineering and operations we'll have everything ironed out." replied Matrix. "Speaking of laundry," Eian added, "one of those items is the laundry room on Deck 20." Deck 20 was the Marine habitability and operations deck. "Their heat exchangers are not functioning properly, and they reported last night that there's no cleaning fluid being replicated by two of the laundry units. We'll get everything up and running in a few days at least, but until then, the Marines are going to have to use a laundry room on another deck." Josh was happy that this would simply be a shakedown and survey mission given the nature of the last mission they had undertaken. A nice long quiet peaceful mission was exactly what everyone needed at present. When a pause developed in the conversation Josh stepped in and gave her departmental report. "Sickbay, thanks to Lt Fisher, seems to be running at optimal efficiency. This shakedown will hopefully allow us to test out our new equipment under control conditions instead of in the field so to speak. To that end I will be running a full standard medical evaluation for the entire crew, thereby killing two bird with one stone. This will allow me to get the medical evaluations over and done with and sent to Starfleet Medical and do a running test of our new equipment at the same time." "Lt Fisher will be setting up a program that will test Sickbay's response to various medical emergencies and she will update you on this later." (reply any iyw) (USS Rosenante - Observation Lounge - CMO Cmdr Caskie and MO Lt Fisher - Day 2 - 0825) Kitty decided that the time was right for her to jump in. "What I plan is to run a series of medical emergency scenarios for Sickbay staff. I'll keep the Captain, the FO and the CMO notified at all times along with whatever department heads need notification. I want to gauge response times, coping ability for staff and equipment and see what works and what needs changed." Steve and Eian gave updates for engineering, Commander Caskie reported on sickbays status and so on and so forth. Steve had a good plan for testing the weapons and Ben was looking forward to it. When it came time for his report he activated his padd and began. "Tactical stands ready, we have a full compliment of photon and quantum torpedos. All phaser arrays are ready, shields are fully operational. The armory has been completely restocked as have the weapons lockers." He reported. "The newest members have been briefed and have been cleared on all the weapons systems including the THIS. All we need is a good test to ensure everything is functioning as it should and the targeting sensors are properly aligned, all diagnostics show everything is good to go. Commander Matrix's test should be more then adequate. I'll coordinate with him after the briefing to set up the tests specifics, attack plans and defensive strategy." Ben sat back then and gave the others a chance to give their reports and updates. The dim green and blue light reflected off Steve's face as he read through his personal messages and reminisced over photos of friends and places he'd visited over the course of the past few years. He had sent messages to his parents still living on Earth, but hadn't heard from them for months. That wasn't unusual as they liked to travel and they had their own lives. They knew the rigors of life in Star Fleet, both having served the Federation themselves until retirement. He had made inquiries on their travels, but nothing came back in the Federation database. That worried him. Tom Jackson had sent a message thanking Matrix for his congratulations on making first officer aboard the Boudicca along with a few more photos of them together. One in particular meant a lot. It was the two of them in sickbay after Matrix was injured in the fire fight in Khoda City, Irlix. Someone had snapped a few of them together after the engagement, both dirty, dusty and bloody from the fight in and around the city. Both looked more like mannequins, covered head to toe from the tan Irlixian sand. It was more the consistency of talcum powder than sand and got on and into everything. Matrix leaned back in his chair, and propped his feet up on his desk and sipped his perfectly chilled Andorian martini. It had been a long day, but it was good to be aboard the Rose in open space again. Matrix looked over at the hologram on his desk of Alura and smiled. He wondered where she was and how she was doing. He missed her smile, her voice, her touch, their conversations. Matrix took another drink, finishing off the martini in one last gulp. Tomorrow was another day. Matrix tapped the display and its glow dimmed, then vanished. "Computer, wake me tomorrow morning at 0530. Room 16 degrees celsius." An audible beep replied to the command as Matrix crawled into bed and fell asleep. The large well-appointed antechamber was filled with rare artifacts of the ancient times, encased behind thick glass and watched astutely by the Scholars of the Reliquary for any indication or whisperings from the ancient gods. They stood, sketching the myriad marks that coated the various artifacts, and then offering a series of muttered prayers and verbal offerings to the great gods that had left them for the Asrai to find all these eons later. And during all this chanting, and fairly quiet work, Layeela sat in a overstuffed, red Plock hide chair watching the twin black glowworm wood doors for any indication as to why she had been summoned. To show that she was a supplicant, she maintained the divine pose of patience, her left hand cupped slightly, palm out, into a 'C'-shape while her forefinger pointed upwards towards the heavens. Her right hand rested palm up in her lap to signify a willingness to conform to thought and teachings, as should be expected when one was summoned to the chamber of the High Oracle of the Golden Temple. Nearby a prayer flag stirred in the cool night air as it wandered down from the sacred mountain of Shayloom. The sounds of the voices of a dozen acolytes studying the sacred texts of the ancient masters could be heard haltingly through the gusting wind, apparently carried here by the breath of the most holy of mountains in the world. Only the occasional mutterings of the Scholars of the Reliquary were louder, and they were just barely audible unless Layeela concentrated on listening to their quiet chants. Her nervousness only grew as she sat there in that oversized chair, waiting for her summons to materialize. Her mind often played tricks upon her, seeking out answers for the summons against a grievous list of infractions that spanned the gamut of possibilities which ranged from speaking too loudly in a holy place, to philosophizing about the nature of the Gods themselves, without being authorized such thoughts or deeds. She wondered if she had been summoned because of her recent questions concerning the appearance of the new object in the sky that she had discovered a few weeks ago, the disk of pale light that seemed to grow slightly larger and more pronounced with each passing of the evening hours. It was not found within the confines of the Order of the Universe, and nowhere was it mentioned within the scrolls of the library that was kept by the Order of the Sovereign Sphere, and yet, she had seen it, and had questioned its validity, and such a thing was simply not done. The Chalo of the order had disciplined her for daring to question the sacred texts, and for questioning the Grand Order of the Universe. Yet, night after night, she could easily turn her observing glass to the same quadrant of the night sky, easily found when one took into account the rotation of their Sovereign Sphere; and witness that the light was still there. And each night she would beg the Chalo to come and see for himself the growing sphere, though in fact it, only seemed to be growing in relation to the veil of lights, for it was as small as a bright star, Yet did not move in the same manner as the two dancing sisters. Nor was it stationary like the veil of lights that surrounded the universe. That could only mean that it is another Sovereign Sphere, like their own, which was paramount to blasphemy. It had taken a week of persistence, and willingness to take the sting rod beatings and the extra work in the kitchens to convince the Chalo that he should look through her glass at last and see the speck of light for himself. Perhaps he had expected to see nothing, or to find an occlusion within the hand ground lens of her observing glass, yet he came away pale and shaken at the image. Later he had banished her to her sleeping pallet as he worried about in search of some obscure texts that belonged to the order. She had fallen asleep, but had been roughly awakened the following morning, by a young boy from another order, who looked as nervous as she; It being uncommon for members of the orders to meet with those outside their caste. Yet he was there, and had been ordered to bring her here to this very office, where her very fate hung thickly in the air between her and the door that led into the grand office. Slowly the bells on the door's hinges sounded their soft melody and the massive doors parted to allow the thick-centered man who was the Voice of the High Oracle to stride into the room. Layeela had heard that he was a lecherous old man, whose tastes ran to young girls, especially those of dull wit and coming from poor families, as they would often fail to question his advances. And looking at his thinning grey-white hair and rotund belly, she could tell that these tales must have some basis in fact. His swagger was one of entitlement, not humility, which only reinforced her thought that the greater orders were ripe with the corruption of the world which they falsely claimed to have banished. Yet this thick-waisted, sweaty-palmed man waddled across the floor towards her, with a sense of frightening purpose that belied any laziness that he normally practiced. It was a quality that she could appreciate as nervousness gripped her, and she summoned up the mental images of wrathful words and heretical claims that would lead her to be beaten once again, this time with renewed vigor. "Girl." He said thickly, slurring the last syllables of the word that bespoke of a laziness adopted in every aspect of his existence. She immediately sprang from the chair, prostrating herself in front of the fat man, whose eyes she could feel roving across the curves of her hind side. She shuddered at the thought, which probably gave him the impression that she was fearful of him, which although not true, was still of benefit to her situation and so she did nothing to discourage the thought. "You have been brought here because your Chalo has informed us of your persistence in eschewing the ancient ways of your order." he said, again his words becoming difficult to follow through the inaction of his lazy tongue. "Yet despite his warnings, and his punishments, you persist in raising doubt amongst your fellows within the Order of the Sovereign Sphere." He stepped forward until Layeela could see the toes of his sandals clearly. "You have been found a heretic, devoid of enlightenment and hereby cast out into the darkness of ignorance that is the bane of the world. You are banished into the streets, where all may take pity upon you as a profaner of the holy writs." With a suddenness, that she had not expected from a man of his size her grabbed her by the scruff of the collar and hauled her to her feet. Only now did she realize that two men of the Order of the Baneful had been summoned and now stood nearby. The fat man released her. "You are to be stripped of your garments, and cast out into the darkness of the world as is befitting a child of your ignorance!" he stated, his voice rising in volume as spittle splattered from his fat lips and thick tongue. "Strip the Heretic!" He screamed them, his thick finger stabbing through the air just a few centimeters from her face. As if expecting the order, the two baneful pounced on her, one gripping her by her hair while the other started striking her with his fists. But that was only the beginning of her torment. The voice, stepped forward, even as the Scholars of the reliquary were making themselves scarce and he grabbed the shoulders of her robes and he yanked. The fabric was course and made to endure, but the hems were weak, and with little effort, and with Layeela attempting to protect herself from the flailing attacks and angry jerks made against her hair, she was caught completely by surprise as they gave way. The voice stepped back, jerking at the remnants of her robes, which had somehow managed to wrap themselves around her hips. The jerking motions were violent enough to pull her off her feet, and left a handful of her golden hair in the grasp of one of the banes. Trying to crawl away, she gasped for breath, fighting the urge to scream incoherently as the last scraps of her holy garments were stripped from her body. Then, as suddenly as the attack began, it ended. The voice threw the pile of garments upon the smoothly polished floor at his feet, and both the Banes stopped striking her or trying to pull out her hair. Layeela was bruised, bloodied and angry, yet somehow in that place, she could not bring herself to attack those that had humiliated her. Instead, she sobbed, curled up into a position with her arms wrapped around her legs, feet tucked to hide her embarrassment at being seen in the tattered remains of her undergarments, which were barely intact. "Leave this place blasphemer! You are cast out of the light, ordered to root in the darkness of ignorance for the rest of your worthless days. You will scrabble in the streets for scraps, and you will sell your rotting body for a handful of grain or a few coins, but you shall never again be pure enough to re-enter the halls of knowledge!" "I curse you always to remember your foolishness in questioning our word! In questioning the Gods and in questioning the teachings of the Enlightened One!" He spoke then to the two banes. "Drive her out to the gates, and cast her into the darkness!" They didn't speak, but moved forward to grab her arms. She clutched the torn remains of her undergarments to her chest and thighs as they bodily lifted her from the floor. She was still sobbing as the gates ground open and the two Banes threw her bodily into the damp cold air that was customary of the central Skye Mountains. Summoning the last ounce of courage that she possessed, stripped of all she once had and uncertain of the future, Layeela rose to her feet, turned and strode down the mountain road towards the city, hoping beyond hope for a miracle.
