"Yes, Sir, I have an idea as to how Captain Taylor could have been killed. I think Quol Nor has managed to program a hologram that is capable of affecting solid matter, similar to an EMS or the program that I'm working on right now, that would allow people in different places to experience the same holodeck program. I think it would explain the energy readings around the wounds and it would explain the lack of blood at the scene. And I have an idea as to how we can catch Quol in the act. Right now the holocapability of the Rose is off, but if we turned it on and made it look like we were attempting to replicate his experiment, I have a feeling Quol would send his hologram in to stop us. Then we could track the signal. T'Sek mentioned the tailor's shop as somewhere Quol could be operating from--this could prove it, Sir." But it wouldn't be enough proof for a trial. They would need that data cube first, to prove Quol had anything to do with the murders. After Eian finished Ben relayed the information T'Sek had supplied them about the data cube. Ben continued, "Seems we still have a little searching to do, Sanok and I will return to the Captain's cabin to see what we can find." Eian had something he wanted to say, considering it may be sensitive matter Ben wanted to hear it when they had a chance to speak freely. "Doctor," He started. "were you able to determine if Nargo was killed in the same manner as the Captain?" (reply Ichijo) Ben nodded at the reply and turned to Ensign O'Neill. "Mr. O'Neill I got the impression there's something you want to add." He said. (reply O'Neill) After Eian had finished Ben relayed the information T'Sek had supplied them about the data cube. He asked. "Doctor," He started. "were you able to determine if Nargo was killed in the same manner as the Captain?" "Identically actually. to the millimeter" Kimiko replied and placed a padd with her findings on the desktop. Ben nodded at the reply and turned to Ensign O'Neill. "Mr. O'Neill I got the impression there's something you want to add." He said. "Yes, Sir, I have an idea as to how Captain Taylor could have been killed. It would explain things though.~ After Eian had finished Ben relayed the information T'Sek had supplied them about the data cube. "Seems we still have a little searching to do, Sanok and I will return to the Captain's cabin to see what we can find." The doctor recognized a dismissal when she heard one. "Thank you, sir" she stated and left. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989, Security Offices - CTAC/SEC Lt. jg Ben Soma,1204) "Identically actually. to the millimeter" Kimiko replied and placed a padd with her findings on the desktop Ben nodded at the reply and turned to Ensign O'Neill as he picked up the padd to review the findings. Ben considered Eian's proposal and found merit in it, it would link Quol Nor directly and that is what was needed. "Good idea Mr. O'Neill, I assume there's a little work to do to bring everything back on line." He began. "My clearance code or that of Captain Salid's in the least. We'll need a little time to get everything sorted out, we can try it tomorrow after we review the information on the chip and the cube." After Eian had finished Ben relayed the information T'Sek had supplied them about the data cube. "Seems we still have a little searching to do, Sanok and I will return to the Captain's cabin to see what we can find." "Thank you, sir" she stated and left. "Thank you Doctor Ichijo." (reply any) (posted by Milo Young) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989, Security Offices, Ensign sg Sanok, 1206) Sanok and the others that had been with him on the Harveq were gathered in the base security office discussing the case. Ichijo shared what she had learned from Nargo, but the most interesting part was that O'Neill had come to the same conclusion that Sanok had. The murderer was an advanced hologram. Such a program could not be allowed to exist. If someone could conduct assassinations using a holo-program that could not be stopped physically, could be a frightening weapon. When O'Neill and Ichijo had left, Ben asked Sanok for his impressions on everything. "If Quol is the one behind all this, and if it is indeed a holo-assassin, it must be stopped and the technology destroyed. It is distasteful for me to say this, but even in the hands of Federation or Starfleet scientists, there will be some point where it is abused. Of course, the entire base will need to reworked to insure this never happens again. There may also need to be a purging of many of the security staff and senior officers. This place has become an embarrassment to Starfleet." (reply Soma) (posted by Bob) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989, Security Offices, CTAC/SEC Lt. jg Ben Soma, 1210) "Agreed." Ben said. "The temptation would be to great for anyone, no matter how good thier intentions may start." Ben thought about the stations personnel and how things were progressing, he knew things could continue in this manner and Sanok wasw correct in saying it was an embarrassment to the Federation. He had spent time on a station years ago and knew things operated differently then on a starship but this was hard to accept. "Purging in the least, complete reassignment and replacement is also as likely." Ben stated. "Things are getting out of hand here and changes will need to be made at some point." Ben shook his head. "How was this allowed to happen, it's as if Command has been looking the other way." Ben stated. "That's a problem for another time, we need to find that data cube. T'Sek said it was shielded so it looks like we'll have to find it the old fashion way." Ben though of where it could be hidden, if it were a small object it could be anywhere in the Captain's cabin. "Some times the best way to hid something is out in the open." He said. "It's possible that Captain Taylor disguised it as a simple decoration rather then trying to hid it somewhere." (reply Sanok) (posted by Milo Young) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (SB989 Luxury Quarters Lt tom Jackson 2o/COPS Day 3 1259) Tom and Pez had concluded their business. Tom was happy because he and Dahlia were to be a couple. Tom had always had a crush on her and she on him. He wondered if Captain Salid would perform the ceremony. He made a not to ask him when he was back on board. He needed a best man and was curious who he should ask. He thought of Dr Lopez - he and Sam had been in a couple scrapes and Sam was a good man. Pez had stepped out for a moment to tend to some 'business; and Tom was a lone. Tom used his step-dad's terminal to message Sam Lopez. Tom went straight to the point and as was his custom.. Seems Sam was off being a doctor and not immediately available. Dahlia returned and sat next to him. Tom marvelled at his luck. ~My god she is beautiful~ Tom thought as he looked into her eyes. "Dahlia, I want Captain Salid to perform our joining ceremony if that is o.k. with you?" he asked his bride to be. (reply: Dahlia) "Human females tend to want a mid or matron of honor to assist them. We male types usually have a best man to help us. I have selected a fellow officer to whom I feel close to. Do you have any one that you would like to perform that for you?" Tom asked. The solitude amongst this mass of being always amazed the Andorian. One nice side benefit was it allowed him a chance to think. Most of the beings who had come to the SB knew him well enough to leave him alone when he was in this type mood. He thought about Joe Taylor's murder. The gods knew there were so many prospects for the killer - it could be anyone literally. He was a tad surprised that Dunphy, the base security officer who had found Taylor's body, had not contacted him. Was it possible the Rosenante staff had ordered him to not talk to other base personnel? That wasn't likely though possible. Tapping his comm badge Kraal messaged Dunphy "Lt Kraal to Security Officer Dunphy" and waited fro the man's reply. (reply: Dunphy) "Please meet me on the promenade. I some questions I need to ask you" he sent to Dunphy. (reply: Dunphy) Kraal nodded as he heard Dunphy reply. "OK See you then - Kraal out" and tapped the link closed. So far everything was going well, as far as behavior went. The Rosenante's security officers were still investigating the murder of Captain Taylor but they were keeping the stations officers at arms length, perhaps they assumed some of them were involved in some way. Taylor wasn't well liked and there were many who could have killed him. His comm badge signaled an incoming call. =/\=Lt Kraal to Security Officer Dunphy.=/\= "Dunphy here Lieutenant." =/\=Please meet me on the promenade. Evan replied. "Of course if you have been ordered to be silent, belay that last request"Kraal added. "It's not that I've been ordered to silence Lieutenant, as you say the Rosenante's officers are tight lipped. Seems they suspect everyone, so we are only involved in the investigation as a curtousy. We have been tasked with minor assignments such as crowd control, inventory was done under supervision and we weren't involved in any of the interogations." Evan knew Kraal wouldn't be pleased with the report but there was little he could do to alter the fact, he knew there were a lot of nervous people on the station, many of whom were at odds with the late Captain. "I know Lieutenant Soma has been questioning many of our officers, Ensign Sanok has been discreetly asking about alibis and routines. They were also allowed to board T'Sek's ship earlier today and then they returned to the Captains cabin and tore it apart again, for what purpose I don't know." Untill the meeting with the Harveq's Captain he had only assumptions to go on, nothing concrete. But now he had some information that he could act on and a report was overdue. Once he had everything in order he tapped his commbadge. "Soma to Captain Salid," He said. "I'd like a moment of your time Sir, I have information you may find interesting." The interogations, inventory of the murder scene, suspect list, supplied data from T'Sek and the information regarding the data cube. Ben crossed to the replicator and requested a Vulcan herbal tea for himself and once the beverage materialized he picked it up and moved to sit opposite Ahmed placing the cup on the table. He activated the PADD and offered it to him. Ahmed took the device and began to scan the pages of the report. His eidetic memory allowing him to absorb every scrap of information quickly. "As you can see," Ben began as Salid browsed the contents. "until a few hours ago we had no concrete evidence against anyone. Now we have information that should link the Ferengi Quol Nor to Captain Taylor's murder." Ben paused and took a sip of his tea before continuing. "Seems this individual was in the business of blackmailing others to his gain, he has accumulated a lot of information against anyone whom might be troublesome to him. Captain Taylor acquired a data cube with information that he used to blackmail passage on the Harveq once he collected proceeds from his investments in the tournament." "So why the murder?" Ahmed asked, not yet to that portion of the report. "It appears that Quol Nor tried to get the tournament staged in his favor but with the information on the cube Captain Taylor was able to turn it to his favor. I believe that Quol Nor had Taylor killed in an attempt to regain the cube and shift the balance of power back to his favor, with his influence he could have bribed his way of the station and gotten away with it, he didn't expect our involvement in the investigation." Ahmed nodded. It was a sound theory. "So what's your plan for arresting him?" Ahmed asked his chief tactical officer. "We believe Quol Nor has been using a hologram to commit the murders. Doctor Ichijo determined that both wound tracks were identical, even someone who is highly skilled would have trouble producing the same wound twice. The theory also helps explain the lack of evidence at the scenes. Both Victims were held in force fields to prevent struggle while the assassin killed them." Taking a moment to quickly gather his thoughts Ben continued. "Ensign O'Neill suggested reactivating the Rosenante's holo emiiters, I had the system locked out once I learned of a request to make the ship fully holo capable. We think that Quol Nor will send his assassin to stop us." Ben said. "We'll set a trap that will hopefully allow us to trace the hologram back to him, once that is accomplished we can arrest and charge him with the murders." (reply Salid) (posted by Milo Young) ===================================================================== (Starbase 989, Tournament Chambers, CTAC/SEC Lt. jg Ben Soma, 1300) Ben was again in the ring facing a new opponent, a Klingon this time. Once again he couldn't help but get a sense of deja vu, his second opponent on Axtis was also Klingon. This one was several inches higher and a good fifty kilos heavier, quite formidable. Once again they worked through the regular song and dance, bowing, sizing the other up for weaknesses and carefully planning the first move. He wasn't her now for the competition but he was working on a tip that the tournament wasn't above board, he'd fight the match and then await the score and compare it to the others and if things were as they were before he would confront the judges and see what was to be learned. The match began at the tone and the Klingon wasted no time, he attacked and Ben countered. It seemed like the Klingon wasn't here for sport, his attacks were more aggressive then necessary. He used his weight to his advantage during his attacks, really stepping into his punches and kicks. Ben found it was difficult to deflect all the force of the attacks and took several hits that just broke through his defenses. Apparently the Klingon was nothing more then a brawler, Ben had studied several Klingon techniques and this one was using neither. Ben managed to land a few of his own punches but knew he was falling behind in the scores. He stepped his attacks up a little but the Klingon didn't appreciate it much, once he grabbed Ben's arm and held it as he delivered a couple quick and forceful knees to his abdomen. Had this been a tournament following the proper procedures the match would have ended there and the Klingon would have been disqualified. Ben glanced towards the panel of judges and couldn't help but notice thier attention was elsewhere at the moment, more evidence suggesting outside interference. The Klingon released Ben and spat at him grinning as he did. Ben didn't like the way things were going but he was gaining ammunition for confronting the judges after his match. He continued try to avoid the Klingon from that point, dodging and only striking if he knew his hits would make contact. Soon enough the tone sounded the end of the match, which was just fine with him. He once again faced the Klingon and bowed, it was returned with less then an admirable show of respect. They turned to receive the results of the match, the Klingon clearly felt he was the winner and did little to hide the fact. Turning his head he snarled at Ben and spat at his feet. "Pitiful, your not worthy of my efforts Human." Ben wanted to suggest he test that theory at his leisure another time but bit his tongue. He was a Starfleet officer and the Chief Tactical and Security Chief of the Rosenante, such behavior wouldn't reflect well on his position especially considering he was in full view of the public. (reply judges, any) (posted by Milo Young) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989 - Tournament Chambers - ACEO Ensign Eian O'Neill - Day 4 - 1330) After seeing Ben's completely unfair match with the Klingon, Eian wasn't exactly excited about his own match. His first pairing had been with Chugg, the Kreetassan who was easily twice his weight, maybe three times. And even though he had held his own and had, at one point, gotten Chugg in a headlock death-grip on the floor, and even though he had been forced to calm the insulted Kreetassan before the match even began, he had received a very poor score for 'conduct.' Ben had just had to endure a fight with a sadistic Klingon who seemed to be out for blood more than for competition. And Dr. Ichijo's scores hadn't reflected her performance hardly at all. Eian decided that if this match didn't go well, he was going to the judges. He stepped onto the competition floor and was faced with his opponent. She was a Cataxian, slightly taller than him (wasn't everyone?) and was holding a baton in her hand. Eian turned to the judges. "It was my understanding that this round was identical to the last round--no weapons first, weapons round half-way through the match." "We've reversed the order," the judge explained calmly. ~Well, I guess I can deal with that. I was hoping for a warm-up first, though,~ Eian thought as he picked up his wooden baton. His was slightly shorter than hers, approximately the length of his forearm. The batons were meant for simulated close-combat with short weapons such as swords, daggers, or knives. The free-form fighting allowed for judgement based on the use of the baton, and what would have happened with a real weapon. Eian and the Cataxian woman bowed, and she said, "I'm Drekka, what's your name?" as the round started. "Eian," he said, and quickly stepped to the side as she swung her baton right at his head. Her movements were exaggerated and she was predictable. ~Not really a fair match by skill level,~ Eian thought. I've got way more experience than she has, I bet.~ He dodged another obvious attack and ducked down low, using his bare foot to kick the back of her furry knee and drop her on the ground. He then used his elbow to pin her down and placed the baton on the side of her neck, simulating a fatal stab. She growled and he jumped back, giving her the opportunity to get up. Her next attack was a lunge with her baton, and Eian used his baton to perry hers and his other hand to strike her abdomen, following up by bringing the baton down on the back of her neck gently, simulating another fatal blow. Then he stepped back and let her recover. ~This is completely unfair. She's a beginner--she's clearly never competed before.~ She was getting angry, too. Her furry face was contorted in a mixture of frustration, embarrassment, and desperation. Eian wasn't moving as quickly as he could and he was trying to give her an opportunity to redeem herself, before she lashed out and got herself disqualified. Her next decision was another poor one, as she tried to rush him. She made a strange roaring noise and Eian was able to duck down and trip her, sending her sprawling on the floor. He spun and prepared to perry a blow from her baton, but much to his surprise, she threw the baton away and shifted her position to all fours. Now looking very much like a mountain lion ready to pounce, she dug her back claws into the tournament floor and leapt for Eian. Her natural reflexes were far too fast for him. Much like an endangered animal, Cataxians were able to summon incredible strength when they truly felt threatened. She pinned Eian to the ground and then thrust her teeth into his arm. Eian cried out in pain and kicked her off of him with a grappling maneuver, and then leapt to his feet. A whistle was blown. Eian held his bitten upper arm with his other hand and didn't take his eyes off of Drekka, who was still crouched down as if she were in danger. A judge entered the tournament floor and held up his hand, silencing the audience. "This tournament is terminated prematurely. Illegal maneuver, a grappling move with legs, Ensign Eian O'Neill is hereby disqualified." Eian stared in shock. "What?! She bit me!" "The judges will decide if any action is to be taken against Drekka. Please exit the tournament floor and see a doctor about that arm." Eian glanced back at Drekka, who was now slowly standing and backing away from him. Initially, he was angry at her for executing such an illegal move as biting during a tournament. Now, he looked into her face and saw desperation and fear. "Are you okay, Drekka? The tournament's over--there's no need to be afraid." She shook her head, and he could hear a small whimper come from the back of her throat. He turned to the judge, who was walking off the floor. "I think Drekka needs a doctor. She's clearly not well..." But no one seemed to be listening to him, except the audience. The audience was now silent, staring at the perplexing scene. Who allowed Drekka to compete? A violent reaction like that wasn't something that just randomly popped up--perhaps she had a history of abuse in her past or perhaps she was undergoing psychological care, but she wasn't fit to compete in a friendly tournament. He looked around for Dr. Ichijo, hoping that she was in the audience and would give him a hand with this mysterious Cataxian before she had another panic attack and lashed out at someone else. "It has come to my attention that this tournament isn't being run with fair play in mind, certain things have occurred that cannot be ignored. The scores have been less than fair and certyain competitors have been given certain liberties." (reply Ieko, O'Neill, Ichijo) "It's time to come clean." Ben stated. "Charges may come against you and your cooperation my lessen them somewhat." (reply Ieko, O'Neill, Ichijo) "Many of the competitors share our views, with the exception of a few. What do you stand to gain from this, is it worth the risk of criminal rehabilitation?" First you paired me with someone three times my size, then you paired Lt. Soma with a Klingon who doesn't know the meaning of the word "compete" and allowed a Cataxian with mental issues to compete in a match. And if we need to, we can go over the footage of each of these matches and compare them with the scores--they clearly don't match." (reply Ieko, Ichijo, iyw) "It's time to come clean." Ben stated. "I'm not doing anything criminal. Morally wrong maybe, but not criminal. It's the captain. He came to us and forced us to alter the judging. For thirty years, I've been a judge and never swayed from my path. But threatening my family. I had no choice." Ben listened as Ieko explained his actions, blackmail by threatening a family. How could a Star fleet Captain bring himself to do something of that nature, it was a disturbing thought. "If you've done nothing wrong then you have nothing to fear." Ben said "Who else was involved in the blackmail?" Ben asked. He wanted to connect whatever dots he could here and now, several names sprang into his mind but he wanted to be certain of their involvement. He couldn't act on hunches or gut instinct, not in a murder investigation.
