T'Larah began to explain. "They wished me to go into more traditionally Vulcan pursuits of knowledge and scientific endeavours. I chose another path and enrolled in the Vulcan Institute for the Defensive Arts." Jono kept walking just as fast but turned his head and raised an eye brow, "Really? Now that’s interesting, I would be interested in seeing you fight in some of the SIMMs I'll be creating in the future." Jono said smiling, it was a rare moment when a Cadet from the Vulcan Institute For Defensive Arts became a Starfleet Ensign. Jono had a quick thought, as he hadn’t seen her Bio yet or even looked over her records he said "How long did you serve in the Institute?" Janeway asked politely. (Reply Sullivan) "Yes, Sir, but I'm 41 standard years old, remember those of Vulcan descent tend to live longer lives then those of humans, excluding trauma or disease of course." "As my direct supervisor, what will my priorities and responsibilities entail?" she inquired. Jono smiled, A Vulcan's never happy until there asking the questions... Jono shook his head deary me. "Basically, your my assistant head of the Tactical and Security departments. I don’t know if that means anything to you. You'll be on Beta shift on the bridge, where you'll take up the TAC Console, Which reminds me before we launch we will have a meeting and set your access codes up. I'll outline your duties in more detail at a later date for you, Ensign. As a Vulcan I'm sure you understand the Logic of getting to there Chefs quickly and efficiently?" Jono asked with a slight smile. (Posted by Jono) (USS Champlain, Corridor, ATAC/ASC - Ensign JG T'Larah Sullivan - 1107) Jono had a quick thought, as he hadn’t seen her Bio yet or even looked over her records he said "How long did you serve in the Institute?" Janeway asked politely.   "Twenty Standard Years." She said evenly. " But I'm 41 standard years old, remember those of Vulcan descent tend to live longer lives then those of humans, excluding trauma or disease of course."    "As a Vulcan I'm sure you understand the Logic of getting to there Chefs quickly and efficiently?" Jono asked with a slight smile.   "Of course." she said simply.   Jono smiled, "Well I think it's time for you three to sign of. Good Job, You can all do what you need to do today now. Report to your superiors, go for medical exams... What ever, although I fully expect to see you all here tonight!" Jono said smiling.   "Understood, Sir I shall be attending." and walked out of the lounge.   T'Larah got off the lift and quickly found the Sick Bay, entered and quickly found the CMO. Seeing that the CMO was Vulcan offered the traditional Vulcan greeting, spreading the fingers of one hand palm out in the traditional "V". "Peace and Long life to you, Doctor." she said with Vulcan stoicism. (Reply CMO) After the good Doctor's response she hands him the blue isolinear chip she had been carrying all morning.  "Ensign Sullivan reporting for required physical.  On this chip you will find my medical records and the veterinary records required when one brings a live animal on board for one "Norman" a Terran feline." (Posted by Todd) (USS Champlain, Ten Forward, ATAC/ASC - Ensign JG T'Larah Sullivan - 1207) T'Larah had been working in the lounge for a while now still very glad that chef wasn't there. "OK Everyone, Time for a break" Jono shouted as he entered Ten Forward. =^=Sir, the Orchestra is here=^= Jono heard over the COMM Link, He tapped his COMM Badge and looked around the room. "Excellent, Send them down to Ten Forward" Jono said smiling, "Ok, Everyone.. Unless your superior directly needs you please go and have some down time, sort out stuff you need to - do whatever.... I need Ten Forward abandoned for now." Jono said smiling. People began moving, "Again - Thanks a lot for you help." Jono said, Jono then had a thought, "Ensigns, LaQua, Rhinehart and Sullivan - Please stay, I may have need for you yet." Jono said. He went and sat at the Admirals table, so he was directly in front of the stage, and waited for them to join him. "Sir?" She asked as she walked over to the "Big Table" Just then the Orchestra popped in, Jono moved over to them. "Stage big enough?" He said asking them as a joke, the stage was absolutely huge. The man in the lead looked up and said "Should do." As member after member of the orchestra paraded through the double doors of the lounge, it was obvious it was going to be a full stage. ~Big group, wonder what songs they will be playing tonight.~ "Right, Judgement time. What do we all think?" Jono asked with a smile on his face, "Did we pull it off? Do you think we'll pull it off later on?" Jono asked smiling even broader, the orchestra could be heard in the back ground. T'Larah heard one man grumble about how the stage wasn't as big as he was used to. "We efficiently used all available space, allowing for flow through and adequate space between tables for guests' egress." She continued. "The color scheme is well with in Star Fleet regulations and guidelines for such an event. It is also designed in such a way as to not offend any of the races that will be present tonight." she said in the Vulcan analytical tone. "It's pretty." she finally said trying to muster some emotion into her analysis. (Posted by Todd) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward - SO - Ensign JG Derrick LaQua - 1210) "Again - Thanks a lot for you help. Ensigns, LaQua, Rhinehart and Sullivan - Please stay, I may have need for you yet." LaQua heard Lt. Janeway say and went and say down at the table with him and the other two Ensigns. "Right, Judgement time. What do we all think? Did we pull it off? Do you think we'll pull it off later on?" questioned Lt Janeway. LaQua waited as Ensign Rhinehart piped in and said his thoughts. Then LaQua said, "I really think we have pulled it off. As a team we were great and all need to be told good job." He sat there waiting for other comments with a smile on his face. (Posted John Merriott) (USS Champlain, Ten Forward, TAC/SC - Lieutenant Jono Janeway - 1212) "We efficiently used all available space, allowing for flow through and adequate space between tables for guests' egress." She continued. "The colour scheme is well with in Star Fleet regulations and guidelines for such an event. It is also designed in such a way as to not offend any of the races that will be present tonight." Sullivan said in the Vulcan analytical tone. "It's pretty." Jono smiled, "Thank-you for that, Miss. Sullivan.... I also think its pretty" Then LaQua said, "I really think we have pulled it off. As a team we were great and all need to be told good job." Jono smiled, "Well I'm sure plenty of people will say something about the place tonight, as for me I pat you all on your backs. Its bin a wondrous effort Well Done to you all" Jono said smiling “I think,” said Rhinehart, “it's a pretty damn fine job, sir. To look at this place, you wouldn't imagine it was barely usable as a simple bar only three hours ago. Given that, I don't think 'later on' is going to prove to be a problem at all.” Jono smiled, "Well I think it's time for you three to sign of. Good Job, You can all do what you need to do today now. Report to your superiors, go for medical exams... What ever, although I fully expect to see you all here tonight!" Jono said smiling. (Posted by Jono) (USS Champlain – Ready room – OPS Ensign Bree Frazier – 1218) “You should probably talk to Lieutenant Janeway in Ten Forward at some point though. Also, tours are... problematic... engineering is still working on several parts of the ship. We'll be mostly confined to Ten Forward for the party. It’s not really a game filled, flashy party anyway," stated Edward. Bree grinned in spite of herself. “I had assumed that much, sir”. She quietly determined to run the tour idea by Lt. Janeway before abandoning it completely, though. Her Celtic heritage had generously provided her with a tiny stubborn streak. “I did some time in the concierge at a very classy New York hotel; I’m sure I can find an appropriate way to help entertain our guests. Please try to relax…sir…” (Posted By ConnieF) (USS Champlain - Bridge – OPS - Ensign Smith - 1323) "Brianna Frazier. We aren't yet, but we will be soon enough. Shall we get to it? I haven't had the chance to check in with the quartermaster yet, and I hear tell there's going to be a party on board tonight. Lots to do, and a short time to do it!" Robert shook Brianna's hand and smiled back. "I heard that it's supposed to be formal dress. I'll have to dust it off." He activated the console behind her and began to stood beside Brianna. He began with his activation codes and then started to set up his programs. He noticed Bree log out and shut down he console. ~Must be going to see the quartermaster.~ Robert nodded to her as she left. He brought up the desk plans and technical specs. ~Need to get my head around this lot.~   He skimmed through the dimensions and looked at the warp drive. ~hmm three nacelles how in hell did I miss that~ Robert shook his head. "42 decks the Amazon only had 12." he muttered. ~stop it. stop it. you knew it would take some time to adjust. you chose this post.~ Robert carried on looking at the specifications. He then looked at the deck plans. He put in a request to the quartermaster for quarters. He hopped he would get one away from other rooms. He gave his bag a soft tap and felt the trumpet that was taking up most of his personal belongings. ~Glad a brought a mute. last thing any one needs is to hear me play~ He reached down and opened the bag a took out a PADD. ~Okay lets get down to business~ He activated the PADD. He had been given it by his younger brother who was a whiz kid engineer. He had fiddled with it and made it four times more powerful. He down loaded the ships deck plans, specifications and other information that would be useful. The console beeped. He looked over and found that the quartermaster had found him suitable quarters. ~Better go and settle my self in~ He attached his PADD to his hip and logged out. He then picked up his bag and left the bridge. (posted By Robbie) (USS Champlain - Bridge – OPS - Ensign Smith - 1324) "Brianna Frazier. We aren't yet, but we will be soon enough. Shall we get to it? I kind of like getting dressed up once on a while. It might be fun; and we'll get a chance to meet people," Bree replied. "After all, as the Captain said, we're a team". ~you really have not seen me then~ Smith stood beside Brianna and activated the console behind her. He began with his activation codes and then started to set up his programs. ~Need to get my head around this lot~  He skimmed through the dimensions and looked at the warp drive. ~Hmm. three nacelles. How in hell did I miss that.~ Robert shook his head. "42 decks the Amazon only had 12." he muttered. ~Stop it. Stop it. you knew it would take some time to adjust. You chose this post.~ Bree turned to him. "I'm sorry, what did you say?" Robert looked up at her. "Ow sorry. I was talking out load." He grinned. "I've come from the USS Amazons an Oberth class ship. The Champlain is amazing. Its so big. You could fit allot of Amazons into the Champlain and have room to spare."   Robert carried on looking at the specifications. He then looked at the deck plans. He put in a request to the quartermaster for quarters. He hopped he would get one away from other rooms. He gave his bag a soft tap and felt the trumpet that was taking up most of his personal belongings.  ~Glad a brought a mute. Last thing any one needs is to hear me play.~ "Cool! Mr. Smith, I just checked with the quartermaster, and our rooms are side by side! That will really be handy for working together, won't it?" She grinned at him. Robert grinned back. "That would be nice." ~Yeh, till she's banging on your door yelling at you to keep the noise down~ He reached down and opened the bag a took out a PADD. ~Okay, let's get down to business.~ He activated the PADD. He has been given it by his younger brother who was a whiz kid engineer. He had fiddled with it and made it four times more powerful. He down loaded the ships deck plans, specifications, and other information that would be useful. Bree interrupted Smith's reverie. "Excuse me, Mr. Smith, but if we are going to be working together as a team, shouldn't we compare notes?" He smiled and showed the PADD to her. "My brother gave it to me. It holds a lot more information then the ordinary PADDs. I'm just down loading the ships deck plans, specifications as well as the power distribution systems. these look a lot more complicated them I'm use too. I have a lot of catch up reading to do." The console beeped. Robert looked at the console and saw that the quartermaster had indeed placed his quarters next to Bree. ~I so better not be lowed. Jonson was very happy to see me leave and he was at the end of the corridor~ He attached his PADD to his hip and logged out. He then picked up his bag, nodded to Bree and left the bridge. He sighed. ~Better go and settle my self in.~ He attached his PADD to his hip and logged out. She was a bit startled at sudden departure without so much as a how-do-you-do. Another kid, she supposed; hasn’t learned his manners yet, much less how to function as part of a team. Well, he seemed pleasant enough; she had taken on harder cases and taught them how to get along in the big bad world. She hoped young Mr. Smith would be no exception.   (Posted by ConnieF) (USS Champlain – Bridge – OPS Ensign Frazier- 1325)   Smith attached his PADD to his hip and logged out. He then picked up his bag, nodded to Bree, and left the bridge.   As he walked away, Bree called after him, “See you at the party. And Mr. Smith?”   He paused briefly.   “I shall be expecting taps and reveille on a regular basis, at the very least; but the occasional impromptu concert would be most appreciated.” She smiled.   (Posted by ConnieF) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward – OPS Ensign Bree Frazier - 1543) “Where would you like to go first? Obviously Engineering’s a big NO, so you'll have to think of somewhere else other than engineering." Janeway said with a smile. ”How about sick bay, the counseling center, and perhaps the science labs?” "Righto, off we go then..." Janeway said, and then stepped out of the doors and waved to the Head Chef, telling him where he was going.... (Posted by ConnieF) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward – SC/TAC, Lieutenant Jono Janeway - 1545) ~Sickbay~ Jono thought quickly. He recalled the deck which Sickbay was on and said, 'Deck 12' as they entered a turbolift. "So, What do you think of the Champlain?" Jono said politely trying to get the Ensign into some conversation. (Reply Bree) "Well my first impression was of the size of the ship. I used to serve under the Captain on the USS Nimitz when he was the First Officer, so wasn’t too bothered about meeting up with Edward Wolfe." Jono said smiling. (Reply Bree - room for more) Jono stepped out of the turbolift and walked through to Sickbay. He wondered if Bree had, had her Med Centre evaluation yet. If not he wondered if Mor'rel would ask her to have her physical examination now. "Well this..." Jono then lowered his voice a fair bit..."... I think..." and then he raised his voice again "Is Sickbay, under command of Acting CMO, Doctor Mor'rel" Jono said smiling. (Reply Bree) "I believe Dr. Mor'rel is over here," Janeway said leading the way. "Doctor Mor'rel?" Jono asked... (Reply Mor'rel, Bree) After leaving Sickbay, Jono turned to Bree. "So counselling next?" He said with a smile. (Reply Bree) Jono nodded, "Ok then... Away we go...." (Posted by Jono) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward – OPS Ensign Bree Frazier – 1546)   "So, What do you think of the Champlain?" Jono said politely trying to get the Ensign into some conversation.   ~Hmm…odd. As though he thinks I’m some kind of timid teenager…?~ “She’s beautiful, sir. Strong and graceful, like a fine horse. Just needs a bit of grooming.”   "Well, my first impression was of the size of the ship. I used to serve under the Captain on the USS Nimitz when he was the First Officer, so I wasn’t too bothered about meeting up with Edward Wolfe." Jono said smiling.   “If I may ask, what’s your impression of him, sir?” Bree asked   (Reply Janeway)   Jono stepped out of the turbolift and walked through to Sickbay. He seemed momentarily lost in thought, as though he was wondering about something; but Bree had not to date exhibited any telepathic ability, so she had no idea what it was.   "Well this..." Jono said, then lowered his voice a fair bit..."... I think..." and then he raised his voice again "Is Sickbay, under command of Acting CMO, Doctor Mor'rel". The young officer smiled.   ~Strange boy…is he always like this, or does he know where he is sometimes?~ Bree just smiled back.   "I believe Dr. Mor'rel is over here," Janeway said, leading the way. "Doctor Mor'rel?" he called…   Bree couldn’t help it, it just came to her…~name sounds just like a mushroom…~she managed not to giggle, though.   (Posted by Connie) (USS Champlain – Sick Bay – OPS Ensign Bree Frazier – 1600)   Jono turned to Bree. "So, counseling next?" He said with a smile.   “Sure”.   Jono nodded. "Ok then... away we go...."   (Posted by ConnieF) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – OPS Ensign Bree Frazier – 1945) Bree wandered onto Ten Forward and glanced around. She was dressed to kill in full whites. She had considered an up do, but finally decided she liked the way her curtain of red hair blazed across her uniformed shoulders. She wore no makeup; she needed none. She watched in amazement as Lt. Janeway bustled about. She had grown quite fond of the young man during their tour this afternoon, but when it came to parties, he tended to major on the minors. She recalled an old story from her childhood about two sisters who were privileged to entertain a great Teacher. The eldest, Martha, buzzed and bustled until she was frantic. Her younger sister Mary, however, had sat at the feet of the guest of honor, listening to him talk. When Martha complained, urging the Teacher to demand that Mary help her, he had gently reprimanded her, saying that “Mary had chosen the best part”, and that it would not be taken from her. From what Bree could see, there were Martha’s present aplenty, but a shortage of Mary’s. She was glad she had arrived on the ship in time to attend the party; these guys needed all the help they could get! Since the physical preparations were almost painfully well in hand, Bree turned her attention to other things. She was aware of at least two visiting Captains that would be attending, and as Sash was an old acquaintance of her Captain’s, she assumed that he would be extended a suitable welcome. But she had a sneaking suspicion that none had been arranged for Captain Saleke, so she slipped away to the transporter room. She arrived just in time to hear his request for permission to transport. (Posted by Connie) (USS Champlain – Transporter Room 1 – OPS Ensign Bree Frazier – 1954) She watched as a tall Vulcan in full dress uniform shimmered into shape on the platform. He stepped to the edge of the raised platform and stopped. "Permission to come aboard," he said formally as he locked eyes with the person who was in attendance and settled comfortably with his hands cupped behind his back as he waited for the reply. After permission to board was granted by the officer in charge, Bree stepped forward. “Welcome to the Champlain, Captain Saleke. I’m Ensign Brianna Frazier, OPS. May I request the honor of escorting you to Ten Forward, sir? (Posted by Connie) (USS Champlain – Transporter Room 1 – Mystique CO - Captain Saleke – 1955)   "Sir Captain Saleke is requesting permission to on board, what do I do?" He asked with wide eyes.   =^= Lt. Janeway to Captain Saleke. Your permission request has been granted, it's a pleasure to have you on board sir.=^=   Saleke strode to the transporter controls and leaned toward the microphone. "Thank you Lieutenant, please inform Captain Wolfe of my arrival, I shall be joining him shortly."   Turning he noticed an Ensign standing at attention, she stepped forward.    “Welcome to the Champlain, Captain Saleke. I’m Ensign Brianna Frazier, OPS. May I request the honor of escorting you to Ten Forward, sir?   The Vulcan nodded acceptance. "Of course Ensign Frazier, It would be an honor." (Posted by Charles) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – SO - Ensign JG Derrick LaQua- 1957)   LaQua dressed in his finest uniform walked into Ten Forward. Seeing that Lt Janeway was greeting all at the door, LaQua extended his hand to shake Lt. Janeway's.   "I think tonight is going to be very elegant Sir. You did a great job coming up with the seating and all," as LaQua looked around the room.   (reply Janeway)   LaQua entered the room with his head held up high and remembering his French heritage walked gracefully over to the bar and said, "A glass of red wine please?"    A moment later with glass in hand he strolled over to a vacant table and sat down. As he looked across the room surveying who all was there he thought of how hard he and the 2 other ensigns and Lt Janeway had worked to bring Ten Forward to as it was now and smiled. He titled back the glass of wine and swallowed hard letting the liquid go down and a pleasing sensation came to his mind. He remembered home for a moment and how much this wine tasted like his family's vintage. He smiled again and went back to surveying the room looking at each guest and crew member trying to sort out in his mind who was who. He stood up and walked to the bar and got another glass of wine and went back to his table and waited to see if anyone would come and talk with him.   (Posted John Merriott) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – SC/TAC - Lieutenant Jono Janeway - 1959)   As Janeway shook LaQua hand, he sensed a rather lot of pride come from LaQua. ~He’s pleased he was able to help..~ Jono thought to himself. "I think tonight is going to be very elegant Sir. You did a great job coming up with the seating and all,"   Jono nodded, it was good of LaQua to give him appraisal.   "Well it wasn’t just me Ensign. You've put as much work into this as me. You should be proud of you and you fellow ensigns for what you've achieved" Jono said smiling.   (Reply LaQua IYW - room for more)   Jono watched as LaQua headed over to the bar and smiled. ~That ones a keeper..~ He though to himself, LaQua seemed to be trying his best to fit in and do things to impress people. But it was you who had the master plan as to how to set everything up. We just followed you’re idea and added our own little touch to it you might say. Sir it will be a pleasure and a honor to serve with you and now if you will excuse me please I would like to get a drink and see who else is here. Please excuse me Sir."   (Posted John Merriott) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward - Nimitz CO - Captain Devan Sash - 2001) Sash had beamed over with Dartena earlier so that he could have a chat with Edward before they had to become official.  He could tell from his conversation with Wolfe that the Champlain's CO was quite proud of his ship, even though it wasn't quite complete.  And he was quite pleased with the assignment that the ship was going... exploration rather than war... now there was a position of envy.  Of course it would be foolish for the admiralty to forget that the rest of the universe was still out there while the war continued to wage on.  And Edward Wolfe was more than capable to deal with that mission.  He's already paid his dues in warfare.  Of course, so had they all.  Perhaps soon this war would come to an end and they could all be on missions of exploration again. Wolfe had given Sash and Bixx a tour of the ship, and Sash couldn't help but smile as he could see the man stand taller and puff out his chest in pride at what he was showing and at the crew that he had selected.  Sash had taken the liberty of looking the crew manifest over before arriving, and was pleased to see a few names that he recognized. Finally Wolfe led them to the 10 Forward lounge.  Sash stopped before the door opened and closed his eyes.  Dartena squeezed his arm in support.  She knew how much he disliked these kinds of duties, however, this one was for Edward, she had reminded him before they left the Nimitz.  He took a deep breath and stepped up to the door, which promptly opened allowing them to enter the reception, which appeared to be in full swing already. Sash stepped to the side and allowed Wolfe to enter first.  "Captain Wolfe, I believe I've kept you to myself far too long.  I suppose I'm just loathed to let you go."  He smiled and patted his friend on the shoulder.  "This party is for you.  Good luck Captain, and may God have mercy on your soul." (reply Wolfe) Sash followed Wolfe into the reception and soon veered off to get away from the crowd.  He found Robert LoDona standing in a corner, surrounded by officers who seemed intent in currying some favor from him.  Sash suppressed a laugh, and went over to him. "Admiral LoDona," Sash said, "I need a moment of your time."  He looked at the others and frowned, "If you all will excuse us." The crowd dispersed leaving Sash and Bixx alone with the Admiral.  Sash looked at LoDona with a smile.  "I thought you could use a break from them." "There's a commendation in that for you Captain," LoDona said, appearing to relax noticeably.  Then he looked over at Bixx.  "And I see you brought an escort.  I didn't realize you had a Bolian in your security team." Sash smiled, "This is Lieutenant Dartena Bixx, my Chief of Operations. Dartena, Admiral Robert LoDona." They exchange a few pleasantries, until Sash felt it was time to move on, having seen Saleke.  Admiral, if you will excuse us," Sash said, "but I believe I've monopolized your time long enough.  I will see you at the ceremony."  At that he left. Looking over his shoulder he could see a small swarm of officers start to form around the admiral.  He couldn't help but feel sorry for the admiral. (posted by Al Muir) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – OPS Ensign Bree Frazier – 2011) Back in Ten Forward, Brianna spent a few minutes socializing, making those few introductions of which she was capable in Captain Saleke’s interest. She smiled at Lt. Janeway, privately gratified that he had temporarily stopped fluttering, and then left his exalted position the senior officer’s table to mingle with the guests. She had seen Captain Sash at a distance, but in the crowd, she had not yet spotted Edward. ~Edward!?~. When he broke through the crowd and approached Captain Saleke, her breath caught in her throat. In full dress, he looked every inch the modern warrior chieftain his reputation made him out to be. His obvious mild discomfort with the whole situation only amplified that impression. Bree was grateful that she was not expected to speak for the moment, as Captain Wolfe made his own introductions. The orchestra began to play a nineteenth century Strauss waltz. (Posted by ConnieF) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward –  Captain Saleke– 2015)   The company of the Ensign had been delightful, she had introduced him around the room to several of the officers present and the party had been in full swing for ten minutes now or more, Saleke had arrived on time and had chosen vegetable sticks and punch from the buffet table and was watching the activity, the band was playing some old earth selection called "Unchained Melody" he believed. A moment after the selection was over he saw Captain Wolfe catch his eye and set aside his plate as the man walked up.   "Captain Saleke, glad you could make it," The man was smiling, "I'm told you and I have a dubious honour of both serving under Captain Sash at one time or another."   "Dubious"" Saleke cocked his head at that one. "I personally have good memories of serving under Captain Sash, am I to understand your time under him was not ... pleasant?"    "It was meant as a joke Captain. I enjoyed my tenure under the Captain immensely. So, that ship of yours, tri-vector assault. What is your mission type billed as? Going to the front?"   "Tactical assault and independent tactical operations." Saleke said. "We will no doubt be routed to the front lines shortly however the shakedown cruise will be an investigation of an enigmatic planet we found but were unable to explore before returning to Geneva." He looked around at the assemblage. "As a former science officer an exploration vessel such as yours would have been the logical choice for my first command however the Admiralty saw fit to place me in a warship, time will tell if that was a wise choice." Picking up the glass from the table he took a sip of the punch. "You have a good ship Captain Wolfe, my compliments."   (Reply: Edward)   "How long did you serve under Captain Sash?" he asked intrigued. "I heard that the last mission was especially eventful." he looked around for a second. "I haven't seen him here yet but assume he will make his entrance shortly." (Posted by Charles) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – SC/TAC – Lieutenant Jono Janeway – 2017)   Jono had been wondering around milling with guest for some time now. In about 15 minutes people would begin to start sitting at there tables and ordering food... Or so Jono hoped, All the milling would stop and dancing would begin... hopefully.   Jono turned his head and Noticed Captain Sash, Jono smiled... and decided it an appropriate moment to stick his head in and say hello. As he moved towards Sash, Jono caught a glimpse of Rhinehart. He smiled looks like the man had made it to the party, he helped set up. Jono took another look around the room an noticed some newer faces he hadn’t seen before, he had made it his mission today to meet most of the crew that were on board in a hope not to have to do it when they were actually on there first mission.   He walked over to Sash and said "Can I get you anything Sir?" Jono said, thinking it would be more of an appropriate opening line than 'Hello'   (Posted by Jono) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 2018) Rhinehart hesitated outside the ornate doors to Ten Forward, squirming slightly in his white dress uniform, attempting to summon the chutzpah to simply walk in as if it were the most natural thing in the world. ~Would anyone really notice if I just turned around and went back to my room?~ he wondered. His quarters were still a total mess – he could certainly use the time to do some unpacking – and he was still less than a third of the way through A Cave Beyond Logic, the pre-eminent Vulcan philosophical text. He hadn't even glanced at it since part-way through his stay on the Weaver. He didn't anticipate that anyone would really miss him if he did, but on the other hand, this would be the best chance he'd get to circulate with the rest of the crew in a more relaxed setting before they launched. He'd almost certainly learn some things valuable to his duties that he might otherwise miss. Taking a deep breath, he pushed through the doors and into the room he'd helped decorate that morning. He had to admit, the effect was stunning. The orchestra filled the space with elegant classical music as a sea of white-uniformed Starfleet personnel mingled about the floor, sipping drinks and sampling hors d'oeuvre. He recognised one or two of the faces, but the vast majority were total strangers, as he'd anticipated. It was an odd contradiction in his personality, he mused. Professionally, he had no problem discussing people's innermost fears and secrets, but socially, unless he knew a person well, he was a fish out of water. He took one, all-encompassing look around the room, balked, and made a beeline for the bar. “Aldebaran whisky, on the rocks,” he demanded of the bartender. “Wait. Make it a double.” “Coming right up, sir,” replied the barman. Rhinehart took his glass, swirling the ice around in the subtle green liquor. He turned his back to the bar and surveyed the crowd again, attempting to gather the courage to walk in and start mingling. (Posted by Noel) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward - Nimitz CO - Captain Devan Sash - 2019) Sash had finally extricated himself from his social settings and was about to say something to Dartena when the look in her eyes indicated someone was coming towards them.  It must have been someone she knew, as the smile on her face indicated recognition.  Sash turned to see Jono Janeway. "Can I get you anything Sir?" Janeway said. Sash looked at the empty glass in his hand.  He'd learned a long time ago that if he carried an empty glass most people might assume that he has just finished drinking and wouldn't offer him anything else.  Leave it to Jono Janeway to prove that theory wrong. "I'm just drinking water right now Lieutenant," he said, "but I'm fine right now.  How are you doing, Jono?  Are you enjoying the Champlain?" (posted by Al Muir) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward - SC/TAC - Lieutenant Jono Janeway - 2020)   "I'm just drinking water right now Lieutenant," he said, "but I'm fine right now.  How are you doing, Jono?  Are you enjoying the Champlain?" Sash said, as he eased a smile out.   Jono nodded, "Well Sir. In all honesty, I'm fine. And the Champlain's a great ship... a big ship.... but a great one at that... This party has been a nightmare to organise though, and something I didn't see myself doing exactly" Jono said smiling while making a joke. "It seems to be going well so far though." He said looking around the packed room. He hoped to meet Admiral LoDona, but doubted he would get too.   (Reply Sash)   Jono nodded, "Well I cant take all the credit. I just had the ideas, Ensigns Rhinehart, LaQua and Sullivan were the man power behind operation party" Jono said smiling, "How are you holding up, Sir? How is the Nimitz holding up, after Geneva...?" Jono said, he was going to ask who had took up his old position but decided not too.   (Posted by Jono) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward - OPS - Ensign Smith - 2020) Robert knew he was late as he stepped into Ten Forward the party was in full swing. "Can I have a iced tea." She gave him a strange look. Robert grinned back. "Trust me love. I'm not good with alcohol." She gave him the drink and he sipped it slowly. The bar was handy, so she headed for it.   She collapsed onto one of the high stools, and took a deep breath. Then, unexpectedly, she was hit by a wave of emotional discomfort that was not her own. She looked around. Nearby stood a young man, several inches shorter than she, but lithe and well-built, sipping on whiskey, his face an impassive mask. He seemed calm enough, but Bree knew that the disturbance came from him. He was miserable.   He also looked vaguely familiar. Where did she …of course, Rhinehart, the Champlain’s junior counselor. She had not encountered him in her tour with Janeway this afternoon, but she recognized him from the crew bios she had studied before coming on board. Somehow, as it nearly always did, focusing on the needs of another for a time calmed her own mind. She approached him, slowly, as one would approach a bird with a broken wing on a busy thoroughfare. When he turned toward her, she smiled, and extended her hand.   “Hi. Brianna Frazier. I’m in OPS; just got here today. You’re, uh, Rhinehart, right?”   (Posted by ConnieF) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward - Acting CEO - Lt. (JG) Rellie Dezlar - 2024) "Would you like a hand. (Posted by Kevin Schram) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 2024) Rhinehart's mood had grown progressively more sour to suit the flavour of the whisky he was sipping. Internally, he was admonishing himself for behaving so ridiculously, watching other officers circulate and converse with ease with no small amount of bitterness. He was only tangentially aware of the tall, red-headed woman approaching him, and he turned, unable to suppress the alarmed expression on his face. “Hi. Brianna Frazier,” she said with a reassuring smile, sticking out her hand. “I'm in Ops; just got here today. You're, uh, Rhinehart, right?” The smile was genuine, he judged, and he returned it, tentatively, relaxing his features with a will of effort. “That's right, Miss... Frazier, did you say?” he replied, grasping her hand lightly, momentarily. “It's nice to meet you. I'm the ship's co-counsellor.” His memory flashed briefly back to the crew files he'd digested that afternoon. Had he read something about an officer with empathic abilities in Ops? It rang a bell. Rhinehart looked as if he might be about to say something else, but paused, uncertain. The moment hung between them a second while he made up his mind. “Please, feel free to call me Olen,” he offered at last. (Posted by Noel) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – OPS Ensign Bree Frazier – 2025)   “Please, feel free to call me Olen.”   “OK, Olen. I’m just Bree.” She leaned against the bar, apparently quite comfortable in her dress whites. She regarded him quietly for a moment, then said, “Olen, your reputation as a professional precedes you. I’m pretty sure you’ve studied the crew’s files; and yeah, I’m your friendly neighborhood half Betazoid empath. That’s how I noticed you.” She gestured at the swirling mass of humanity surrounding them. “You really hate all this, don’t you?”   (Posted by ConnieF) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 2026) Rhinehart regarded Bree with slight unease as she pretty much read his thoughts and spoke them back to him. ~Man, that's gonna take some getting used to,~ he thought. He paused before answering, ordering his thoughts and emotions. He loosed a deep sigh before speaking. He figured she'd already got the measure of his internal state. He might as well share it with her willingly. “Hate is too strong a word, really,” he replied, matter-of-factly, turning his gaze to follow her expansive gesture. “I'd rather not be here, it's true. I dislike situations where one is expected to push oneself to the forefront,” he said. “I'm more comfortable as an observer than a participant, if you take my meaning.” (Reply Frazier) Olen nodded. “The strong negative emotion you sense is likely my frustration at myself. I wish I could be more like those people,” he indicated the countless officers circulating around the room, raising a gentle hum of chatter. “It annoys me that I cannot.” (Reply Frazier) He took another sip of his whisky, regarding Bree over the rim of the glass, absorbing her answer, yet conscious of talking about himself too much. In spite of his slight social awkwardness, he found the woman's bright openness engaging, and he relaxed somewhat. “I'm sorry, Bree,” he said, smiling slightly. “This is hardly engaging party conversation. You chat them up a little, and they never figure out that you’re reading them like a book, unless you want ‘em to!” Bree’s green eyes sparkled as she grinned a little wickedly, then arched a red eyebrow at Olen.   Olen nodded. “The strong negative emotion you sense is likely my frustration at myself. Aren’t you guys always telling us that we should make peace with who we are? I learned the hard way that I can’t be anything but myself. Then, after a while, I realized I didn’t really want to.”   Bree turned away slightly, and her eyes seemed to focus on something distant. “I didn’t even know I was half Betazoid until I was halfway through my twenties. I just thought I was weird. Then I found out I’m not even much of a Betazoid; I have the empathy, but apparently, no telepathic ability at all.” She sighed, but then she brightened up again, and laughed. “Well, OK, maybe I am just weird, but at least I have a good excuse for part of it, eh?”   He took another sip of his whisky, regarding Bree over the rim of the glass, absorbing her answer, yet conscious of talking about himself too much. Funny, I thought for all the world that this was one of the best conversations I’ve had in weeks, party or no!” She paused, eyes widening slightly. “I’m not boring you, am I?” There was a hint of real vulnerability hidden in the fiery redhead’s question.   (Posted by ConnieF) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 2028) Rhinehart listened with growing fascination as the red-haired woman talked openly about her past. He sensed a certain vulnerability under her confident exterior, a sense that was confirmed when she asked: “I'm not boring you, am I?” Rhinehart's eyes went wide with horror at the mere thought of it. Nothing could be further from the truth, and he felt terrible about the possibility of hurting her feelings. “Heavens, no!” he blurted out. “I was just slightly self-conscious that the conversation had taken a turn for the deep and meaningful, Bree. That's not everyone's idea of getting-to-know-you chit-chat, that's all. My apologies.” He smiled warmly at her. “I can see you're not just anyone." No, she did not think he was bored or annoyed. In fact, a lot of the tension that she had initially sensed in him seemed to be easing. At least, she could sense that his smile was genuine, it’s warmth real. “No need to apologize. I don’t like chit-chat, either. ‘Deep and meaningful’ conversation is my idea of a good time.”   She knew she could draw him out. She had learned to do that in the school of hard knocks. But…she didn’t want to. She wanted to give him his space; just enjoy him, and let him take things at his own pace. He was strong, but fragile in his way. ~Let him be; just talk to him.~   "Your background sounds fascinating, please tell me more," Rhinehart continued. "What was it like to discover your dual-heritage?”   “Strange. I’m still finding out about it, really.” Bree sipped her drink. “I was raised by my grandparents; they thought my mother was a witch. That’s what they told me. They tried to marry me off to some local kid when I was 15; but as I stood there at the alter, I just…knew. So I ran.” She took a rather sharp swig. “In some ways, I’m still running; but now…I think it’s to something, not away. I’m just not sure yet what I’m running to.” Bree focused away again, but his time through narrowed eyes, as though at something in the room. She broke the gaze suddenly, stared at the floor a second, almost as if she had been frightened; but it passed. There were gaps, but Rhinehart felt her expressions and body language gave him more than enough information to fill the blanks. She had known suffering, he realised. Something in her words triggered a recent memory. He recalled the words of Captain Boswell, commander of the cargo ship the USS Weaver, upon which he had arrived at the Champlain two days before... (had it really only been two days?!) He'd said you had to have a few screws loose to be serving aboard a starship. ~Not quite how I'd phrase it,~ thought Rhinehart, ~but I can see the wisdom in those words.~ “I think there's a mystery at the heart of anyone who would choose this life,” he said quietly, gazing into the finger of fiery green liquid in his glass, as if it were a scrying pool leading to who-knew-where. “Everyone aboard this vessel is searching for something, Bree, whether they know it or not. You don't warp off into unknown space unless there's some kind of... hunger... some kind of need at your core. Chances are, one day, you'll find that what you've been looking for was with you all along.” He swished the ice cubes around in his whisky, making a slight tinkling sound, before taking another sip. (Posted by Noel) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – OPS Ensign Bree Frazier – 2031)   As Bree listened to Olen, felt the gentle but inexorable power of his words, it seemed to her that a tiny piece of her that had been frozen inside for longer than she remembered began to thaw a little. She saw no reason to speak, because she had nothing to say; and she sensed that this man did not require a constant stream of chatter to be content in her company anyway. So, she took up a comfortable position beside him, and together they proceeded to observe the funny partygoers in companionable silence.   (Posted by ConnieF) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward - Nimitz CO - Captain Devan Sash - 2031) He made his way to Saleke and stopped beside his former CSO.  "Captain Saleke, it's good to see you again.  How have you been?" (posted by Al Muir) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – ATAC/ASC Ensign JG T'Larah Sullivan - 2032)   ~Time to get this non-sense over with.~   This was one of the VERY few opportunities, that's not the right word, punishments when Ensign Sullivan was required to wear her white dress uniform.  She hated it. No, hate wasn't strong enough a word, but when she found the suitable word to describe her loathing she would make sure to tell everyone.  If it had not been a direct order from the Captain, she would have found an excuse not to attend.  Approaching the double doors they parted.  The music was really well played.  She expected a lot worse.  She would have to make a mental note not to judge a band or orchestra until she heard them play.    She made her way to the bar to order.  The bartender was friendly enough, a Terran female in her thirties T'Larah guessed. "Get a drink for you Ensign?" she asked pleasantly.   "Water,12 degrees Celsius." T'Larah answered.   "Are you sure you don't want anything else? Some social lubricant?" she prodded gently.   "What is 'Social Lubricant' ?" Sullivan inquired, genuinely curious.   "Something with a little more, you know, kick." she said.   "Oh, you mean alcohol, no thank you, just the water." she replied.   The bartender quickly procured the requested beverage, "Well then have a nice time, Ensign." she smiled passing the glass across the impossibly smooth counter top.  T'Larah took the beverage and headed to get some food.  While she was thinking about what to get, some one approached rather rapidly towards her, she turned to face the person almost dropping into a ready stance until she saw who it was.   ~Not him again~   Approaching her was the arrogant head chef.   "I knew you would come looking for me!" he gloated.   "I am not 'looking' for you.  In fact attendance to this event is required.  I am here because I was given a direct order to attend.  I was actually looking at the selection of dishes that were prepared." she explained then added.   "But a mere excuse to see me I would wager." he said.   ~Still arrogant as ever.~   "What have you and your crew prepared?" she inquired.   "Well, we have prepared a variety of dishes from ALL over the galaxy." he said, a little too grandiosely.   ~What is he trying to make a pitch?~ She thought he sounded like a Ferengi salesmen.   "What cultures have you included in your selection?" she asked, he was being too general.   "We have of course, Terran, Vulcan, Andorian, Orion, Tellerite, Bajoran, Klingon..." he started listing.   "What do you have that's Vulcan?" she interrupted him.   "Oh, a little taste of the home planet?" he said.   ~Did he just now realize that I'm half Vulcan?~   Smiling just a little too broadly, "The Vulcan dish d'jour today is Vulcan Mollusks sautéed in Rhombolian butter.  A tasty bowl of Plomeek soup, and a glass of Vulcan Port to round off the pallet.  Would this be to your liking?"   ~That actually sounds good~   She still felt uneasy accepting something from this man, but still was hungry and didn't want to insult the man, he might bring her Klingon food.  A short time later the offered food was brought out to her.  She had to admit it did smell very good.    "If there is anything else you require, please don't hesitate to ask." he said and went about his duties.   T'Larah took the first bite of the meal.  It was the best she had ever tasted.   (Posted by Todd) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward - Ensign Smith - 2032)  "Oh no. I served my entire career before this on the USS Ebon Hawk, that  was an Akria-class heavy cruiser, so I'm used to large ships, but still,  not has big has a Galaxy-class," she said. Robert nodded. "I've come from the Amazons which is an Oberth class ships so every thing is so much bigger."  "Do you have any family members in Starfleet?" she asked, Robert nodded. "I come from a big family. My big sister is in the SFI. I don't know where she is deployed. Jennifer one of my other sisters has got a post on the USS Paladin as a fighter pilot. I also have a brother working as an engineer on the USS Churchill. As well as younger siblings going through the academy." He smiled as he sipped his drink. "How about you, any family members in Starfleet?" (reply Dezlar) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward - Nimitz CO - Captain Devan Sash - 2033) Sash nodded at the Vulcan’s note. "Yes, I hadn't expected to be here either, but the Nimitz has still been recuperating from the effects of the virus. It's not so much the health issues but the trust. So we've really only been doing patrols. However, I believe the admiral has something in store for us soon." "Your missions of late have been well documented and capably carried out, I see the ability of your crew has in no way been eroded since my departure." Saleke stated flatly in his most Vulcan manner. "Well, we do seem to get into our fair share of trouble," Sash admitted. "But our science department has been sorely lacking since your move. I hope your own crew is coming together." "The transfer of Dr. Kirien and Dr. Gralen from the Nimitz to the Hades was especially useful," Saleke said, taking a cup of punch, "especially since I lost my CSO and needed experienced and stable medical help, it appears they will fit in well with the crew." Sash nodded and smiled, hoping that Michaela was dong well. Her time on the Nimitz always seemed so full of sadness and loss, starting with the death of Edward Wilson. He wondered how his girls... her girls... were doing. There were times he truly missed them. "Will the Nimitz still be here in three days? I have invited Captain Wolfe to a launch party for the Hades and would be honored if you could attend also." "I believe that I can make arrangements for that, thank Captain Saleke," Sash replied. "It's good to see so many of my past crew doing so well. I wish I could say the same for Captain Winters. How is Vanessa doing?" (posted by Al Muir) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward - Hades CO - Captain Saleke - 2034) Devan Sash seemed introspectful as Saleke mentioned the name of the new arrivals on the crew of the Mystique that had been transferred to the Attack Cruiser Hades, while on board the Nimitz Saleke had noted his attachment to the Kirien children, the death of Edward Gideon had thrust the man into the role of father figure for the young girls and he had no doubt this was what might logically be going through the Angosians mind. After a bit he nodded and smiled at the Vulcan then seemed to perk up a bit more at Saleke's invitation. "I believe that I can make arrangements for that, thank you Captain Saleke, It's good to see so many of my past crew doing so well. I wish I could say the same for Captain Winters. How is Vanyssa doing?" His interest was more than just in passing Saleke knew though he disguised it well as though in an off-hand remark, Vanyssa Winters had before Kestra Troi been Sash's First Officer and the two had grown extremely close shortly before the time of her promotion and assignment to the Mystique which she had taken on its maiden voyage. The man seemed calm though and his face was inscrutable, even hard to read for one such as Saleke who had an eye for detail and missed little based on the tones, inflections and body language of another. "Captain Winters has had a number of difficult periods both before and since taking the Mystique out which appear to have accumulated and caused a great deal of damage to her psyche." He paused an instant as he considered how much to say. "Senior Counselor Riven Mias was disingenuous with me after she engaged in a telepathic battle with the Hiren TQO which resulted in its destruction but came "Clean" with me before we returned to Geneva. Despite the intervention of himself and the counseling staff of the Mystique aided by Dr. Kirien she has apparently lost the will to live and has been unconscious since the encounter, based on my calculations her life span will not last longer than another twenty days at most." (Reply: Sash) "There is some hope." Saleke had learned not to disregard the unquantifiable entity known as the human spirit. "Lieutenant Ketal bonded with her and believes that she will eventually regain consciousness, only time will tell for certain the outcome." (Posted by Charles) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 2035) Rhinehart relaxed as the fiery Aldebaran liquor went to work on him, and he realised for the first time just how tense he had been since his arrival on the Champlain. It seemed like this was the first moment he'd had to simply 'be', without some duty or other pressing in on him. Idly, he glanced over at Bree, who stood nearby, gazing over the party. Even though they hadn't actually spoken in some minutes, he felt the unspoken companionship that had begun to form between them. The conversation between them wasn't over, he sensed, perhaps wouldn't be over for some time yet. He turned his attention back to the party, sipping delicately at his drink. The partygoers were starting to move towards the tables he'd spent most of the morning setting up. It looked like dinner was about to be served. He wasn't sure if it was the drink or the company that led him to do what he did next, but in days and weeks to come, he would often wonder where that uncharacteristic action had sprung from. He caught Bree's eye, and held his arm out for her to take. “Tell me Brianna... would you care to dine with me?” he asked. (Posted by Noel) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – OPS Ensign Bree Frazier – 2037)   “Tell me Brianna... would you care to dine with me?” Olen asked.   Bree smiled; but then she glanced away for a second, scanning the room. She frowned, then shook her head slightly; but it was not a gesture of refusal. More like she was trying to clear her head. Then she turned back to Olen, meeting his gaze squarely. Her smile returned, warmer that before.   “I would be honored, Olen”.   When she linked her arm in his, she felt a slight advance in the spring thaw that seemed to have begun in her. As they walked toward the ensign’s tables together, she smiled inwardly at the picture they must have made. She was over half a foot taller than he, her flaming hair and flashing eyes a flamboyant foil to his elegant but subdued appearance. But Bree could recognize a handsome pair when she saw one, even when she was a part of it. ~Old cultural stereotypes die hard, but they’re just going to have to step down this evening. I have better things to think about.~ She carried herself like the daughter of a line of Celtic warriors she was, proud to be seen on the arm of Mr. Olen Rhinehart.   (Posted by ConnieF) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 2039) He gulped as Bree paused, glancing around the room. ~What are you doing?!!~ screamed the small voice of Olen's pride somewhere inside him. He seemed to have caught Bree off-guard with his question... that was okay, he'd taken himself by surprise as well. He'd convinced himself she was about to say 'no', when she fixed him with a green-eyed gaze that pierced him. Her smile lit up her face as she linked arms with him. “I would be honoured, Olen,” she said. His heart was still in his throat as he escorted the statuesque Miss Frazier across the floor toward their table, but now it was pride, not fear, that swelled inside him. The pair caught a few glances from other officers as they strode across the hall in lockstep, which Olen did his best to disregard. He pulled out a chair for Bree and waited until she was seated before he sat down next to her. He held up his glass, still containing a half-measure of Aldebaran whisky. “To maiden voyages,” he toasted, quietly. “May we find what we seek... and may our warp coils never fail,” he said with a shy smile. (Posted by Noel) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – SO Ensign JG Derrick LaQua – 2040)   LaQua head her reply, "Well, Monsieur, you can’t have it, for I may need it again later; but I will be happy to share it with you. Brianna Frazier, OPS. But I think perhaps you overestimate some of our compatriot’s level of comfort in this environment, You, however, seem to have been born to it. Is that not so?"   LaQua smiled and said, “Well you might say I was born into it. It's true I do love these dress events. I do wish I could wear this all the time, but be that as it may. And yes now that I have scanned the room I see some are not shall we say comfortable. It's very nice to meet you Lady Frazier and yes I'm sure you will need you name again for some time so I will not keep it." LaQua smiled and laughed to himself. He raised a eyebrow and thought a female officer with a sense of humor, very refreshing.   LaQua then looked over at Ensign Rhinehart and said, " Ahh Mr. Rhinehart, pleasure to see you again are you enjoying the party?"   (reply Rhinehart)   LaQua took in what Rhinehart said and mulled it over a bit. Then he asked, “So how are you two liking the ship and your areas so far?"   (Posted John Merriott) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – OPS - Ensign Bree Frazier – 2041)   “To maiden voyages,” Olen toasted, quietly. “May we find what we seek... and may our warp coils never fail,” he said with a shy smile.   As Bree raised her own glass to return Olen’s toast, their hands touched, and the thaw took on new proportions. She did not even care whether it was intentional or not; her warp core was doing just fine. She wondered if her saw the sparks she felt in her eyes...   (Reply Olen)   When the cracking abated a bit, Bree felt another gaze upon her. She turned toward the source, and there sat the ever-so-French Ensign La Qua, nursing his glass of wine and looking awfully smug. ~Frenchmen- they always notice these things!~ She arched an eyebrow at him, and smiled.   “And how are you doing this fine evening, Mr. La Qua?”   (Posted by ConnieF) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 2041) Rhinehart was startled out of his mental retreat as Ensign LaQua arched his head past Bree and addressed him. "Ahh, Mr. Rhinehart,” he said. “Pleasure to see you again are you enjoying the party?" “It's certainly come together really well, I'd say, Mr. LaQua,” he said soberly, deliberately avoiding any mention of his personal emotions at that moment. Briefly, he called to mind the back-aching morning he had spent laying tables on the other side of the room. Earlier that day, every time he had glanced over at LaQua, who had worked every bit as hard as Rhinehart, they had shared a rueful grin at their luck in drawing this work detail. “I think congratulations are in order on a hard morning's work.” He raised his glass and nodded at his colleague. “So, how are you two liking the ship and your areas so far?” LaQua asked presently. Rhinehart hesitated, glancing at Bree, hoping she would sense his mood and pick up the thread of conversation. As much as Ensign LaQua seemed like a decent officer and a good person, Rhinehart wasn't really one for small talk. He faded slightly into the background once again, and simply listened. (Posted by Noel) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 2042) Rhinehart's eyes locked with Bree's momentarily as their hands brushed. What he saw there pleased him... and scared him all at once. He held her gaze as he sipped his drink in toast to the adventure they would be sharing, then reverted once more to the companionable silence they had shared at the bar. He felt like he had taken a step off a cliff edge. He thought he'd been prepared for pretty much anything, but he certainly hadn't seen this coming. Dazedly, he tried to fix his thoughts in some kind of order, tried to focus on the party around him, his drink, the scents of the food. But his eyes kept drifting back to Bree. He watched her striking profile as she turned to engage LaQua in conversation. He didn't really hear a word of what they talked about. And the only thing running through his mind was: ~This feels right.~ (Posted by Noel) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward -Counselor - Lt. Alosar- 2043) Alosar did not like to arrive at social functions too early.  He discovered that if he did he would be required to make ... small talk.  Unfortunately, he was not so adept at that.  He felt that small talk was meant for those who had little to say.  If he was going to invest time in a conversation he would rather it be meaningful and that either he came away with something from his efforts or he was able to enlighten others.  Either was acceptable. Coming to a social event later, ensured that others would already be caught up in conversation, and also his presence was less noticed.  That way he could observe the others less conspicuously.  And so he decided to arrive at least thirty minutes late.  Of course, he hadn't calculated the problems he might run into in getting to the reception and so he wound up being even later than he desired. However, nobody seemed to notice when he entered so he simply release the train of thought and went directly into observation mode.  He had already noticed that many of the crew had become cliques and were talking away animatedly.  Others were in pairs.  His eyebrow raised as he noted that Ensign Rhinehart had been having what appeared to be an intimate conversation with another Ensign.  He made a mental note to question his young charge about it tomorrow. As he wandered through the room he noted a Vulcan female eating a plate of what looked like Plomeek soup.  It reminded him that he hadn't eaten yet, nor had he met this crewman.  If his memory served him right it would be Ensign T'Larrah Sullivan.  He went through her file that he had memorized. ~Human/Vulcan, security officer, raised on Vulcan... interesting... Resigned from VIDA to join Starfleet... 41 Terran years old.~ He stepped up to the table and stood beside Sullivan, facing her. "Greetings Ensign Sullivan." He raised his hand in a formal Vulcan salute of greeting.  (reply Sullivan) "I am Lieutenant Alosar," he informed her, "ships counselor.  How are you ... enjoying the reception?" (posted by Al Muir) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – SO Ensign JG Derrick LaQua – 2044)   LaQua scanned the room looking at all the people around and noticed Ensign Rhinehart and a lady were walking over to the table. He noticed that they sat down and toasted each other, hands touched, and they were lost in each others eyes. He remembered his first love and how lost in each other they were. Two of a kind walking the same path. He a wine plantation owner's son and her a Vulcan diplomat's daughter. It was a different kind of love, but love none the same. It was passion and a understanding of each other like he had never known before. Then came the day that she died. LaQua remembered it well. He was at the chateau recovering from a bad fall from working on a area of the vineyard where his father let him practice his archeology. He was working got a little to close to the edge and his knee failed him and he fell. He crawled all the way back to the chateau but not before she went looking for him. That night had a bad thunderstorm and flash flooding happened. She had been caught up in the flood and drowned. My little T'Skyr was gone. In her memory he decided to change into xenobiology and xenoarcheology. Then came Starfleet Academy and now here. Here stationed on a ship and getting to finally do what he wanted. A chance to improve himself and maybe help others out also. He thought to himself, ~Ahh amour ain't love grand.~ He raised his glass of wine and drank deeply from it and then his focus went back on Ensign Rhinehart and his lady companion. Then he noticed she raised her eyebrow and said, "And how are you doing this fine evening, Mr. LaQua?"   LaQua noticed it was the lady with Ensign Rhinehart and replied, " I am just fine Madam. I see that everyone is in their own element tonight and having fun. I couldn't help but notice that you and Mr. Rhinehart are shall we say getting to know one another." He used his deep rich French accent to amplify the meaning behind what he said. "Anyways you know me but I can't say I know you. May I have you name please?" asked LaQua.   (Posted John Merriott) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward -ASC/ATAC Ensign JG T'Larah Sullivan- 2044)   So absorbed in her meal, the Lt's greeting caught her by surprise. She swallowed the spoon full she had in her mouth at the time, wiped her chin and mouth with the cloth napkin, and stood up.  Right hand making the familiar "V" of the Vulcan greeting.   "Peace and long life, Lieutenant." she said.   "I am Lieutenant Alosar," he informed her, "ships counselor.  How are you... enjoying the reception?" After the Lt dropped his salutations she dropped hers. Sitting down and offering the counselor a seat as well.  "The food is actually quite good," she explained, "but you are the first to actually engage me in conversation."   (Reply Alosar)   "If you are hungry the staff's understanding of the Vulcan palate is the best I've seen from a human, you should try it," indicating the soup. "I could order you some."   (Reply Alosar)   "I'm curious, why did you decide to get into counseling?"   (Posted by Todd) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward -Counselor - Lt. Alosar- 2045) Alosar was following the reasoning behind the ASC's choice of a career path, and although it was sound, from an emotional point of view, logically it lacked a bit. Perhaps her human half exerted itself at that point. "It would be illogical to discard all of that knowledge and experience until it was no longer needed, lest we are discarded by the wayside like the knowledge we cast aside." Alosar looked at T'Larah with interest. She actually seemed to be ... enjoying herself. Obviously she did not embrace the Vulcan lifestyle completely. She was a fascinating woman, and Alosar decided that he could appreciate getting to know her. "I see," he replied, "so in your logic for your choice of duty stations, you would say that our violent heritage is actually advantageous, if we use it solely as an avenue of study. That is quite an interesting argument. I am certain you won't find many Vulcan's touting the benefits of our emotional beginnings." (reply Sullivan) "So tell me," he went on, "how do you feel that your human heritage fits into this philosophy?" (posted by Al Muir) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward - ASC/ATAC Ensign JG T'Larah Sullivan 2046)   "Also, it is possible to understand the emotional responses of others without experiencing them myself.  Experience does not always lead to understanding, although I will concede that it does help." He stated.   "I can understand where an objective logical approach to counselling could be beneficial.  I would think that they may find you too "clinical", but most times that is what is need." she conceded his point.   "Reading your own record," Alosar said, "I too am curious as to what events lead to your own selection of Security.  It would seem that you would have gone into the sciences, considering your parents background."   ~I get this a lot, but I guess it's fair game since I applied the same stereotype to him.~ she thought to her self.   "Not always is the quick and easy path the correct one." she said plainly. "If I had joined the Science Academy on Vulcan surely my mother's renown would have given me a "jump start" on my contacts and on academics as well. Some times one has to choose their own path." She said evenly. " This is mine.  Experience does not always lead to understanding." she shot back at him.   ~I can debate too.~   "Vulcan has for many years, centuries even, had a policy of non-violence and logic, true?"   (Reply Alosar)   "Logically we can assume that not all civilizations will see the correct path, some even are some how repulsed by the notion of logic and pacifism ruling their lives. To keep our way of life from being displaced by powers such as the Romulans, Breen, Borg, or the Klingons before them, we must have certain measures in place to deal with those situations.  Certainly Starfleet is Vulcan's first line of defense against incursions into Federation space, but we need to be able to 'hold our own' I believe is the Terran vernacular. Also before we came to our senses about the way to rule ourselves through logic, Vulcans were very war-like as you know.  It would be illogical to discard all of that knowledge and experience until it was no longer needed, lest we are discarded by the wayside like the knowledge we cast aside."   ~Ah, that was fun.~   (posted by Todd) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – OPS Ensign Bree Frazier – 2046)   Unlike most of their crewmates, the tall Frenchman seemed eminently comfortable in his dress whites, at ease at a social occasion such as this one. His bearing was unmistakably aristocratic, but not at all snobbish or patronizing. His deep, rich French accent seemed heavy with meaning as he answered Brianna’s inquiry.   “I am just fine, Madam. I see that everyone is in their own element tonight and having fun. I couldn't help but notice that you and Mr. Rhinehart are, shall we say, getting to know one another? Anyways, you know me but I can't say I know you. May I have you name please?"   Bree inclined her head slightly, and replied. “Well, Monsieur, you can’t have it, for I may need it again later; but I will be happy to share it with you. Brianna Frazier, OPS. But I think perhaps you overestimate some of our compatriot’s level of comfort in this environment,” she said with a slightly wicked grin, glancing about at some of the other partygoers nearby, squirming in full dress. “You, however, seem to have been born to it. Is that not so?”   Bree settled in for some charming conversation, the like of which she had not engaged in for some time; but a part of her heart quietly slipped away from the noise and pleasantries, and rested in the welcoming warmth of the deep, silent soul at her side, like a sleeping cat curled by a banked hearth.   (Posted by ConnieF) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward -ATAC/ASC Ensign JG T'Larah Sullivan 2047) "I see," he replied, "so in your logic for your choice of duty stations, you would say that our violent heritage is actually advantageous, if we use it solely as an avenue of study. That is quite an interesting argument. I am certain you won't find many Vulcan's touting the benefits of our emotional beginnings." "If the situation arose where one needs to defend one's self from violence, would not a person trained to handle that eventuality fair better and have a better chance of survival then one with no experience" she said, "and not everyone's path lies together." "So tell me," he went on, "how do you feel that your human heritage fits into this philosophy?" "The instructors at the VIDA are fond of speaking in metaphors so I will explain it that way." she explained, "If my Human heritage were a fire, my Vulcan side would be the forge. The sword created, the end product, would be the knowledge and experience I have gained used to defend the Vulcan way of life." ~That sounded bad, but that is the closest analogy.~ She thought hoping that it would be adequate. (Posted by Todd) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward - OPS – Ensign Smith - 2048) Robert saw that the conductor had stopped for a few minutes. He finished his drink and walked over. "Hallo. I was wondering if you wanted some company?" The conductor looked at him for a moment. "Thank you very much hun, but I'm already taken." Robert blushed deeply for a moment. "No I'm sorry that came out wrong." "Yes in deed hun." "I play the trumpet and I was wondering if I could join you." "Can you play. Don't want to embrace your captain's now do we." She smiled sweetly at him "That's not a problem. I was first trumpet in academy brass band. The one that got first place at the planetary brass band competition." The Conductor nodded. "I'm shore Tomas could be with a drink. Do you have your own instrument?" "Yes its in my quarters I'll just go and fetch it." Robert turned and hurried away. (Posted by Robbie) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward- OPS - Ensign Bree Frazier- 2049)   LaQua proved to be a fine conversationalist, and multi-talented, as well. When the discussion turned to the music of the evening, Bree discovered that he played the Vulcan harp, and that he was familiar with some of the more obscure pieces included in the traditional Vulcan repertoire, including one of the tams (dance tunes) that she had learned of during her studies of xenosociology. While it was true that dancing in Vulcan culture was mostly reserved as a freeform exercise for young children, there were a few forms known to be engaged in occasionally by adults. The steps tended to be slow, stately, and controlled, not too unlike those of the pavons favored in the European Renaissance courts on earth; but Vulcan dances told a story. Bree was delighted that LaQua was also privy to one of Vulcan’s best-kept secrets. She scanned the room, saw Captain Seleke, and a plan; ~OK, scheme~; began to hatch unbidden in her concierge-experience-infected brain.   “Mr. LaQua, if suitable arrangements can be made, would you be willing to accompany one such dance this evening?”   “Of course, my lady”, LaQua replied, rolling the ‘r’ deep in his throat, as only a Frenchman could. ~Wish I could do that…~   “Then if you gentlemen will pardon me, I will attempt to make said arrangements. Even if I cannot secure a suitable dance partner”, she said, pointedly glancing in Saleke’s direction with a sly grin, “I’m sure your ralash-tanaf (music) will lend a bit of welcomed Vulcan-style class to this affair”.   (Reply LaQua)   As LaQua bestirred himself to fetch his harp, Bree looked to Olen for his consent to go in pursuit of a little benevolent social manipulation. She felt his doubt, but he nodded graciously. As she rose, she allowed her hand to “accidentally” brush his shoulder, hoping to tacitly reassure him that she fully intended to return to his side. ~A little reassurance never hurts.~   Bree approached Captain Saleke politely and respectfully, but essentially as an equal, as befitted a social occasion such as this. When he reached a point in his conversation where he could turn his attention to her with equal courtesy, he did so.   “Captain Saleke, it has come to my attention that a member of our crew is accomplished in Vulcan musical forms, and that he has his harp on board. He has gone to fetch it, and we will arrange for him to share Delvok’s Sutra-varu t’Falor #28 with the assembly at an appropriate time. Of course, he can play it as a concert piece, but it would be more effective in its original form. Would you honor me, and our guests, by joining me in performing it as written, complete with the visual element?” ~It’s not easy asking a Vulcan Captain to dance…~   (Reply Saleke)   Bree considered checking with Janeway before speaking with the conductor of the orchestra, but in the crowd, she could not find him. ~Maybe in the galley, supervising the poor caterers again?~ She gave up and headed toward the bandstand. But before she got there, her very own teammate and neighbor Robert strode confidently to the stage and began to speak with the leader of the band; and he had his trumpet in hand! Her errand could wait; the night was still young. No way was she going to miss this. She returned to her table; to Olen. He rose and seated her again, as he had when they first arrived. She quickly briefed him on the results of her foray, and then she settled once again into his comfortably quiet company.   Bree’ first reaction when Robert began to play was one of vast relief. He was good; really good. “In the Mood” was one of her all-time favorites, and the young ensign played it with feeling, as well as with precision. He wound it up to a wailing climax that would have done Mr. Miller himself proud. But when they slid into mellow mode, and the sweet strains of the Moonlight Serenade wafted through Ten Forward from the clarinets, she knew she was done for. The closet romantic imprisoned deep within her staged a swift and decisive coup.   She had long loved that song. But…well, it had never quite gone to her heart before as it did now. She momentarily lost the track of all her plotting and found her eyes drawn to Olen.   She wondered if he could dance. He seemed lithe and graceful enough…how she would have loved…but this was definitely not the time to ask. She didn’t dare risk embarrassing her shy, gentle new friend. Besides, some guys didn’t like dancing with women taller than they. So, she just sighed almost imperceptibly, smiled softly, and let the music sink into her soul, softly singing the little-known words along with the band. But she could not help but imagine how lovely it would be to experience the classic slow swing number as it was meant to be enjoyed…on the dance floor.   (Posted by ConnieF) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward - Hades CO - Captain Saleke - 2050) During his discussion with Sash Saleke noted the arrival of the ensign who had escorted him to the meeting, she waited politely for a break in the conversation and after their line of discussion had reached an end he said "Pardon me," and turned toward her and inclined his head in an interested manner. "Yes Ensign Frazier, how may I help you?" “Captain Saleke, it has come to my attention that a member of our crew is accomplished in Vulcan musical forms, and that he has his harp on board. He has gone to fetch it, and we will arrange for him to share Delvok’s Sutra-varu t’Falor #28 with the assembly at an appropriate time. Of course, he can play it as a concert piece, but it would be more effective in its original form. Would you honor me, and our guests, by joining me in performing it as written, complete with the visual element?” He saw a bit of hesitancy in her manner as though not sure of his reply or was it bemusement in some form? Truth be told he found the request stimulating, that one or more on this ships crew even was aware of Vulcan musical forms or the dance that went with it was a rare thing. He dipped his head in acceptance before replying. "You honor me, I am willing." Armed with his consent she then moved rapidly toward the bandstand. "A surprising development." He murmured as he turned back around. (Posted by Charles) (USS Champlain - Personal Quarters - OPS – Ensign Smith - 2051) Robert dashed into his quarters. He had not really had time to unpack properly and his belongings was scattered all over the place. He grabbed the trumpet from the table and played with the valves to make shore that they were not sticking. ~good. take the mute as well. Not shore what we'll be playing~ He scooped the mute up from the table as he left. (Posted by Robbie) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward - OPS - Smith - 2055) He walked swiftly over to the conductor. "That was quick. okay this is Mr..." "Robert Smith." The conductor nodded. "Okay every one this Robert. He wants to have a little play along with us. Tomas grab a drink." Robert sat down where he saw shown and gave a friendly nod to the other players. "Okay every one lets see what the academy brass band can produce." Robert looked up at the conductor. She give him a sly grin. ~Ow hell I'm in for it now~ "Okay lets go for a classic peace. Its not in the sheet book. In the Mood. okay one, two, ah one, two, three four." He grinned to him self. ~what Glenn Miller. YES I like this~ The music started. He raised his trumpet and began to play. (posted by Robbie) Stardate: 2407.02.26 (USS Champlain – Personal Quarters – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 0718) Rhinehart's eyes snapped open, locked once again on the view port over his bed. The thumping sound of blood rushing in his ears filled his head as he struggled once again to suppress the sense of vertigo. It was definitely better than yesterday, he reflected as the sensation subsided, but there was something different today... He swung his legs over the side of the bed and straightened, almost swaying under the urge to lie back again. Ah yes. A hangover. That was it. He'd paced himself carefully, and certainly hadn't overdone it, but he had to admit, he'd drunk a little more than he was strictly used to. Still, a sonic shower and a greasy breakfast later, he'd be right as rain, he knew. Perversely, he was almost looking forward to it. He scratched his beard roughly and stretched luxuriously. Now that damnable party was behind him, he felt worlds better. He recalled Captain Wolfe's communication from the day before. He had a staff meeting at 1000 this morning. A sense of anticipation thrilled through him. He couldn't wait to get underway. (Posted by Noel) (USS Champlain- Personal Quarters- OPS - Ensign Bree Frazier- 0830) Time to put dreams to rest and face real life. Bree rose rather later than her usual custom, but the thought of the briefing to be held in two hours galvanized her into full wakefulness. A decent breakfast helped clear the remaining effects of the previous night’s revelry. She performed her simple morning ablutions, a little distractedly perhaps, but after a period of meditation and centering, she was ready to go to work. She checked the night shift’s progress reports via the remote terminal in her quarters, paying special to OPS. She felt there was some cause for concern regarding the ship’s eminent launch; but then, any vessel’s shakedown cruise was bound to be a bit rocky. She only wished she didn’t feel as green as the newly refitted Champlain. Well, she and her ship would just have to grow together. (Posted by Connie) (USS Champlain- Observation Lounge - OPS Ensign Bree Frazier – 0948) Bree found a seat near the lower end of the table in the Observation lounge. She had her choice; few had arrived yet. Lt. Janeway, however, was right behind her. He chose a middle-top seat; she wondered why. He looked around, nodded, and said "How is everybody today?" Bree nodded and smiled in return. She liked the young lieutenant, but she wondered if he sometimes tended toward cockiness. Maybe this mission would shake him out of it? When Captain Wolfe arrived a few minutes later, Janeway immediately accosted him with a rather impertinent and inappropriate inquiry into his superior’s personal opinion of the success of last night’s soirée, grinning as though he already knew the answer. Bree wondered again if this fellow was also in the habit of assuming he knew what others were going to say before they had the chance to say it for themselves. ~Hmm. The dear boy had best not try that with me…~. Then she turned her full attention to Edward ~Stop that!~… Captain Wolfe. He was outwardly calm, but Bree could sense the emotional conflict beneath the façade. An interesting ride, indeed. ~Where did that come from?~ After everyone had arrived, the Captain began his presentation. “…to boldly go... if you will.” ~Cute.~ “The second aspect of our job will be to check the growth of Admiral Doenitz's forces, to keep his people from violating the Prime Directive and to engage them when necessary." As Wolfe paused, waiting for response, Bree felt something a bit… spooky. Nothing to do with the mission itself; the heavy armaments being refitted onto an explorer had already clued her in to the possible secondary role of the Champlain. It was coming from the Captain himself. ~What does this mission mean to him, really?~ She sat silently, exploring her impression. Janeway, however, opted not to keep silent (~no surprise there~). He jumped in almost instantly, perhaps in hope of getting all the new Ensigns to gain confidence and say what they thought during the meeting. Of course, Bree thought, it was just as likely that he would only succeed in interfering with their input by his overly extroverted enthusiasm. However, she refused to allow her own introverted nature to provoke her to take offense at his well-meant gesture, and listened to his words. "Sir, what is the likelihood of us running into Doenitz's forces in the Typhoon Expanse?" Janeway said as he looked around the table encouragingly. Bree suppressed a mild gag reflex. She, too, waited for any other responses. (Reply Wolfe, any) The Captain continued, outlining the Champlain’s most immediate mission. The tracking line of their path was displayed on a galactic map, through the Beta Quadrant and to the Eta Scorpii system. As the line passed through System 663, Bree felt as if Wolfe was suppressing a momentary shudder. System 633; yes, she had read about that. She could hardly blame him, but… Janeway jumped in again. “Borg?” he asked, with a confused facial expression. He waited for the Captain’s response; but Bree, again, said nothing. She had a suspicion that the Borg might prove the least of their worries. She continued to listen. (Reply any) The Captain then addressed his security officers. Janeway assured him that security would be ready, and then looked at Sullivan as if to ask her to back up his claim. He nodded to her. (Reply Sullivan) "… Engineering has to ensure all (pertinent) systems are ready. I know you've been working hard. We have to be ready to launch on 2407.03.03 and all systems will have to be operational by 2407.03.05, when we are scheduled to arrive in the Eta Scorpii system, although I'd prefer them sooner," stated Edward nodding to Lieutenant Dezlar. (Reply Dezlar) Bree listened carefully as Wolfe addressed his engineering officer. Then, it was her turn, and Smith’s. "Operations staff needs to ensure equipment and power flow is up to specs. They also have to make sure that they can work within whatever simulations Lieutenant Janeway designs to ensure power is kept available and constant to the systems needed. This is an absolutely crucial role," stated Edward, directing his comment at Ensigns Smith and Frazier. Bree felt Janeway’s stare as she prepared to answer the Captain, but she pointedly ignored it. Perhaps that would serve as a tacit reminder that Wolfe was in charge here, not him. “Understood, sir. I am concerned, however, about the lack of access we have so far been afforded to engineering. I realize that our people are doing their best to work out the bugs, but we need to work with them from the ground up, no matter what the problems.” She then turned and faced Janeway with a polite but firm gaze of her own, and said sincerely but rather coolly; “And I’m sure Mr. Janeway’s simulations will prove more than adequate to satisfy our testing needs.” She smiled, but continued to hold Janeway’s gaze while she waited for her colleague to speak. (Reply Smith, Wolfe, any) Bree listened as Wolfe addressed his scientific, medical, and counseling officers. (Reply La Qua, Alosar, Rhinehart) "Now, that being done, are there any questions or suggestions?" asked Edward. Bree was about to remind the Captain, and reveal to the others, that she, too, had First Contact training, but, of course, she did not get the chance. Janeway jumped in yet again, suddenly amending his slumped posture and asking, "Sir, When are we expected to receive the rest of the crew compliment?” He put the question as politely as possible, considering he was still looking down at his PADD. Then he raised his head to Wolfe's level and waited for an answer. Bree resisted the impulse to shake her head sadly. She decided to save her comment for a more advantageous time. (Posted by ConnieF) (USS Champlain – Observation Lounge – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 0951) Every inch the professional, Rhinehart walked into the Observation Lounge clutching a PADD in one hand. He was just in time to see Lt Janeway take his seat and ask: "How is everybody today?" “Very well, thank you, sir,” said Rhinehart from behind, all awkwardness forgotten. He felt in his element here, oddly. Deftly, he moved around the table and took a position near the lower end, an empty seat between himself and Ensign Frazier. He smiled courteously at the Ops officer, offering her a nod in greeting. “Good morning, Miss Frazier. How did you enjoy the party?” he said. (Reply Frazier, room for more iyw) He nodded politely, and turned his attention to his PADD. He'd downloaded several crew files to it that he had flagged up yesterday afternoon as potentially requiring attention from his department. He wanted to have their details on hand as the captain outlined the mission parameters, so he could append any notes he saw fit. A moment later, Captain Wolfe entered the room, nodding at the collective staff members. Rhinehart nodded in return. “Good morning, sir,” he murmured in greeting. Rhinehart sat quietly over the next while, listening intently as Captain Wolfe outlined the mission details, only interjecting once. “The second aspect of our job will be to check the growth of Admiral Doenitz's forces, to keep his people from violating the Prime Directive and to engage them when necessary," said the captain, before pausing for a second. “Sir, do we have any intel on what actions Admiral Doenitz has been pursuing in violation of the Prime Directive?” he asked. “Also, I would ask that, if possible, any material - Starfleet files, logs, records, and especially profiles prepared by other counsellors - on Admiral Doenitz and his senior staff be made available to my department as soon as possible, sir. I would very much like an opportunity to go over them and add any of my own observations to the mix.” Rhinehart paused to allow Lt Alosar to amplify this point if he wished. (Reply Alosar, iyw) He settled back into his seat, tapping the occasional note into his PADD, as he listened carefully to the discussion bouncing around the table. Shortly, the captain came around to individual department briefings. “Counselling,” he said, “I need you to be ready for potential first contact. We don't know who has moved into the planet in our absence, if anyone has. I also need you to review information on the Borg and the Romulans. You may also have to check on some of our crew. For many of them this is their first mission, some anxiety and fear might be occurring. I need everyone ready, willing and able when the time comes.” “We'll be ready, sir. As regards the crew, myself and Lt Alosar have already studied most of the senior crew files, and will be familiarizing ourselves with the rest in the coming days. I think it may be necessary for us to speak formally with one or two crew members before we get underway in earnest, but we have yet to make any firm decisions on that,” said Rhinehart, again looking to Lt Alosar to confirm his words. (Reply Wolfe, Alosar, iyw) “Obviously, sir, we realise that this is a busy time for everyone, so we will be flexible, and try our best not to disrupt vital work in the lead-up to launch,” Rhinehart concluded. (Posted by Noel) (USS Champlain - Observation Lounge - ASC/ATAC - Ensign JG T'Larah Sullivan - 0952)   The festivities last night were still the topic of some conversation when she entered the conference room.  Taking note of Lt Janeway's position at the table she chose to the seat directly to his left and sat down.  "Good Morning." she said, "I guess we are waiting on the Captain, the way it should be."   (Reply Janeway)   One thing struck Jono's nerve in what Edward had just said. Jono said one word with a confused facial _expression, "Borg?" Jono asked curiously... He hoped Wolfe would elaborate on if he meant the Borg were still there or not.   "We will be well prepared, Sir," she added.  "As one of the primary threats to the Federation, beyond the standard curriculum, I studied the Borg quite extensively.  Even using some of my electives to learn more."  She continues, " With the added power of this newer model of Galaxy class ship, I believe the Borg will be quite surprised with our combat capabilities."   "I'm sure you're aware that this is still a dangerous area of space. We have the Romulan Star Empire close at hand and there is still heavy Borg activity in the area. This is, of course, ignoring the fact that Doenitz has been rumored to be active in the area. This means that Security is going to have to do a lot of work. I need to be sure that we can hold up against the triple threat. Every scenario has to be run and we have to ensure targeting and weapons systems as well as defensive measures are working," Edward then looked from Janeway to his assistant Sullivan.   "Aye Sir. Security will be ready" Jono said and then looked at Sullivan as if to ask her to back up his claim. He nodded to her,   "We will make sure that Internal and External Security and Tactical systems will be nominal at launch.  I will help Lt. Janeway run the security teams through many drills and scenarios.  I will even instruct them on alternate methods of personal defense so they are not so reliant on phasers." she said agreeing with her immediate superior officer and stated. "We will be ready."   (Posted by Todd) (USS Champlain – Observation Lounge – OPS Ensign Bree Frazier – 0953)   “Good morning, Miss Frazier. How did you enjoy the party?” Rhinehart said. He looked to the Captain and waited for the briefing to start.   "The up most care will have to be taken in terms of retrieval, which is one of the reasons we have taken on archaeologists," stated Edward.   When the Captain had finished LaQua raised his hand and asked, "Sir when was the last time the Borg was actually seen in this area Sir?"   (reply Wolfe)   LaQua saw the Captain look over at him and the professor saying, "Scientific, we need sensors operational, both long range and short range. I need calibrations made to scan for sentient life forms on the planet's surface. I also need you to study the colony records to produce a colony map. Excavation might be necessary once we arrive, it will be easier if we know where we're going,"   LaQua looked at the Professor and saw him just nod so LaQua replied, "Yes Sir. We will have a map ready for you and sensors long and short ready to go. I will get the excavation equipment ready also Sir. One question Sir, What is the likelihood we will run into the Romulans. I mean do we have any info on whether they have laid a claim to this planet with The Star Empire being close Sir?" (Posted John Merriott) (USS Champlain - Observation Lounge - CEO - Lt. She found it hard to keep her eyes open during the meeting, but when the Captain started talking to her, she paid full attention. "Borg?" heard from Janeway, phrased as a confused question. ~Hadn't I just said that the original colony was destroyed by the Borg?~ Edward decided to continue with the briefing as the possibility of Borg still being in the region seemed like a given, especially as the destruction of the colony was a well documented event in Federation history. And again, he noted the other crew rolling their eyes and trying to hide their embarrassed smiles. (Reply any - room for more) "I'm sure you're aware that this is still a dangerous area of space. "Do you mind?" she inquired.   She inspects the sword more closely, checking it's balance and the inscriptions on it. "Is this sword a ceremonial piece or is it a combat model?" she asked.   (Reply Janeway)   "So it's a ferrous composite? Meaning it's made of iron alloys such as steel or nickel or is it made of more modern alloys?" she asked while handing it back to him pommel first to be mounted on the wall.   (Reply Janeway)   "The VIDA trained me in a few archaic weapons forms.  Given the opportunity perhaps we could spar." she said.   (Reply Janeway)   "Understood,  I look forward to it." she said voice filled with pride.   ~Either he is really good, or he doesn't know what he's getting into.~   Jono nodded, "The Champlain's first mission, is worrying me slightly. All those high profile names the Captain mentioned aren't easy to defend against.. Never the less it should prove a worthy challenge" Jono said with a stern face. "Your first task from me, is to go to the holodeck with a Mr...." Jono looked over at his computer screen, "....Horowittz our tactical holodeck expert. I want a full training simulation devised and created by 2000 these evening - if possible beforehand. It should include defense situations, hand to hand combat as well as phasers. There should be some on ship and off ship battles also, I would suggest researching this planet were heading too."   She thought for a moment about what she had been tasked with.  It seemed easy enough.  She would need some parameters though.  "Were there any special instructions or parameters for this simulation?" she inquired   (Reply Janeway)   "Then I shall endeavor to perform adequately." she said .  "Did you want me to get right to work?" she asked for permission to be dismissed.   (posted by Todd) (USS Champlain, SC/TAC's Office - SC/TAC - Lieutenant Jono Janeway - 1030)   "Do you mind?" Sullivan asked, as she looked over at Jono's sword.   Jono shook his head and said "Go ahead," He was interested in what Sullivan could know about his sword. He watched her with growing interest.   She had picked it up, Jono watched her as she checked the swords balance, and then looking at the inscription on it.   "Is this sword a ceremonial piece or is it a combat model?" she asked. Jono smiled,   "Its a combat model. I've used it in several past battles, mainly for sparring though. You don't find many battles now a days where you can fight effectively with a sword." Jono said smiling greatly.   "So it's a ferrous composite? Meaning it's made of iron alloys such as steel or nickel or is it made of more modern alloys?" Sullivan said she handed Janeway the sword back, pommel first. Jono took the sword gratefully and weighed the weight in his hands, he felt at home with it within his grasp. He smiled and placed it on its mount on the wall.   "Its ferrous," Jono said smiling, "You seem to know a lot about sword's, I personally have trained with them for a long time... along with archery - bow and arrow." Jono said smiling.   "The VIDA trained me in a few archaic weapons forms.  Given the opportunity perhaps we could spar." she said.   Jono nodded, "I would be pleasured." Jono said smiling, he wondered if she knew she would be fighting a sword master. Although she was half Vulcan... it would be an interesting Spar.   "Understood,  I look forward to it." she said voice filled with pride.   Jono then went on to giving her, her first orders.   "Were there any special instructions or parameters for this simulation?" she inquired   "All will be revealed soon, Miss Sullivan" Jono said smiling   "Then I shall endeavour to perform adequately." she said. "Did you want me to get right to work?" she asked.   Jono shook his head, "We will be holding a meeting with the security department in," He looked at the time.. "Oh... 7 minutes. This is why I've outlined what I need you to do now. I'll provide you and Mr. Horrowittz with more details during this meeting."   (Posted by Jono) (USS Champlain, SC/TAC's Office - ATAC/ASC Ensign JG T'Larah Sullivan - 1035)   "Well then I will wait for the meeting." she said.   Several minutes later a small group of Chief Petty Officers walked in pads in hand ready for the meeting.  It was their job, T'Larah knew to enforce the rules, standards, and policies set forth by their senior officers.  Namely the two officers in the room and their bosses as well.   "It looks like we are all present, sir if you want to get this meeting started." said the Chief enlisted of Ship's Security.   (Posted by Todd) (USS Champlain - Ten Forward -Counselor - Lt. Alosar- 1037) Alosar nodded but offered little emotional support to the Ensign's dilemma. He had a strange thought that the new counselor had, indeed, set up his belongings in another's office.   And Rhinehart's demeanor showed that he was quite sincere in his own embarrassment.  "I can understand why you would feel that way Ensign, but let's not continue to dwell on this event," Alosar stated with a shrug.  "We should move forward." "Perhaps, if Lt Janeway is agreeable, we could meet in our offices after lunch, and go over the crew files together? I could make up for some lost time," said the ensign. "If you have a prior commitment," Alosar replied, "I wouldn't want to cause you to be derelict in another obligation.  However, if you have the time and all is prepared for the evenings festivities, then that would be agreeable. I would prefer to get a good start on crew evaluations as soon as possible." "Yes, I gathered Captain Wolfe was planning to brief the senior officers tomorrow," Rhinehart stated, "and it would certainly be of benefit to have some insight. That should give me enough time to get this place looking ship-shape, sir." Alosar raised an eyebrow at the phrase.  ~Why would they wish to make the lounge shaped like a ship?~  But he held his question in check.  "Are you planning to attend the gathering, by the way, sir? I can't say I'm looking forward to it, myself," he added, conspiratorially. "I had the understanding that attendance was mandatory," Alosar said, "however, attending such a function would clearly give me a good indication of crew interpersonal relations, so yes, I will be in attendance." He looked around to see the hustle and bustle going on around in 10 Forward. He knew that if he remained there much longer that Lt. Janeway might try to enlist his help as well.  Not that he was opposed to either work or the reception, but he really did have better things to do with his time. "I will let you get back to work Ensign," Alosar said with a nod.  "Perhaps you can contact me when your work is complete and we can get together for lunch.  It might be a good idea that we get to know each other as well." (reply Rhinehart) "I will see you when you are ready," Alosar said, and he turned to leave the room, thinking it might be a good idea to get some of his own belongings into his office soon.  He also thought that he might trace the younger counselor's steps from the previous day and retrieve his things, bringing them to his own office.    Logically it might form some sort of bond between them, and they could get to work sooner without Rhinehart being distracted by the question of where his ... "stuff" is. (posted by Al Muir) (USS Champlain – Ten Forward – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 1038) "I will let you get back to work Ensign," Alosar said with a nod. "Perhaps you can contact me when your work is complete and we can get together for lunch. It might be a good idea that we get to know each other as well.” “Very well, sir. I've been looking forward to meeting you and getting underway,” replied Rhinehart. “Believe me, I would much rather be in my office right now than shifting furniture,” he added, glancing at the table arrangement he'd been busy setting up. “I will see you when you are ready,” said Lt Alosar. Rhinehart turned to watch him go, wondering at the Vulcan's retreating back. Sighing, he turned back to his work, regarding the pile of chairs before him with a disdainful eye. Rolling his eyes, he grasped the top one, and again retreated into his contemplative haze, mulling over his first meeting with Alosar. He knew that Vulcans made very... efficient... counsellors in their way, and that their dispassionate point-of-view was often the breath of objectivity patients were looking for. And Vulcans often proved to be formidable sources of wisdom on the bridge. Still, he felt /this/ particular Vulcan could prove to be an interesting one to work with. (Posted by Noel) (USS Champlain, SC/TAC's Office - TAC/SC, Lieutenant Jono Janeway - 1039)   "Well then I will wait for the meeting." Sullivan said. Jono nodded, "That would be... logical." He said smiling.   "It looks like we are all present, sir if you want to get this meeting started." One of the several men who had entered his office said.   Jono stood up, "I'm afraid not, Mr...?" Jono said as he walked around his desk and too the door,   "Its Prong, Sir. Daniel Prong" The man said as he rushed out after Janeway.   "Ok," Jono muttered, "I don't know how you used to do this on your old ship. But on the Champlain we do it my way." Jono said smiling. Jono made it into Main Security and sat down at the table in the middle. He found the head and co-heads of each Security team at the table awaiting them. He took the seat at the top and gestured for Ensign Sullivan to sit next to him.   He nodded to several people, and then looked around the table. He had invited Mr. Horrowittz along to the meeting also. "Good Morning, everyone" He said smiling, "For those of you who don't know, I'm Lieutenant Janeway and this is Ensign Sullivan." Jono said pointing to Sullivan.   (Reply Sullivan IYW)   "This meeting is being held for numerous reasons." Jono continued, "First of all, to act as a time to be able to get to know each other. This was going to be a new experience for him, and most of the people in front of him... or so he assumed.   "Ensign Sullivan, will be working on a holodeck program to facilitate necessary training skills and tactics for the up-coming mission. He didn't want the species being revealed to the officers until the Training program was put under action.   (Reply Sullivan)   "I would like to see each team leader and co-leader, 2 by 2 starting at 1100 hours. And going down in teams starting from Team Alpha. Throughout today and some point I will be performing a Security Drill, so make sure all your teams are ready to move when needed. Too commonly crewman treat drills as a means to pass time. This is not so, the term "Train as you Fight" will help us get the right mind set." she then added, "While you may not be numerically evaluated, your teams, effort will reflect on their and your evaluation reports." she nodded to Lt. (posted by Todd) (USS Champlain- Bridge - OPS - Ensign Bree Frazier- 1105)   As the Captain’s briefing ended and the officers were filing out onto the bridge, Bree caught up to Rhinehart. “Olen, I want to let you know that I do have First Contact training. I’m not trying to be cloak and dagger about it or anything, but it just didn’t seem like the right time to bring it up…back there…” she smiled a little sheepishly.   (Posted by ConnieF) (USS Champlain- Bridge - OPS - Ensign Smith -1106) Robert left the meeting with the others when the captain dismissed them. He saw Bree chatting to Olen. He suppressed a smile they both had appeared quite close in the party last night. He walked over to one of the far consoles not wanting to intrude in their conversation. He activated the console and took out his PADD. ~It looks like there is a strange read out in the EPS taps in Jeffries tube delta nine on deck nine near the docking latches~ He glanced over at Bree who was still in conversation. ~I'll tell her later~ He picked up his PADD and headed for the turbolift. (Posted by Robbie) (USS Champlain – Bridge – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 1107) For most of the briefing, Rhinehart's mind had been replaying that smoldering smile Bree had given him as he greeted her. He was pleased to find her at his shoulder as the meeting came to a close. “Olen, I want to let you know that I do have First Contact training,” she said. “I'm not trying to be cloak and dagger about it or anything, but it just didn't seem like the right time to bring it up... back there...” Rhinehart regarded her for a few seconds. He could feel something writhing beneath the surface of her words; wondered what had prevented her saying so during the briefing. There certainly was a mystery at the heart of this half-Betazoid... he wondered vaguely if he might be able to help unravel it. “Thank you, Bree, I appreciate you letting me know,” he said. “Actually, you've pre-empted me slightly. I was going to ask you, in any case, if you would be prepared to take part in any future First Contact delegations. I know it's unusual for Ops to get involved in such things, but your empathic abilities could prove invaluable, not to mention your concierge experience. So it's a happy coincidence.” He smiled, looking forward to the prospect of potentially working alongside her. (Posted by Noel) (USS Champlain – Bridge – Ops Ensign Bree Frazier – 1108)   “So it's a happy coincidence.”   ~You can say that again..!~ He looked so good when he smiled.   “I’d be honored to help in any way I can. After all, I am a member of Ed…ah, Captain Wolfe’s bridge crew; there may be certain occasions where an “unofficial” liaison would be useful to him, too.” As she spoke of the captain, an almost imperceptible cloud flitted across her face.   “Olen, are you and Alosar going to be setting up psych evals?”   He nodded slightly.   She hesitated, as if she wanted to say more, but could not find the words. When she did speak, she could not keep her voice completely free of shadow.   “OK, well, let me know when. I’ll… see you later?” I was a real question, not just a salutation.   (Posted by ConnieF) (USS Champlain – Bridge – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 1109) Rhinehart studied her face carefully as she spoke, caught her slip over the captain's name. He knew what he was looking for, so it wasn't a surprise to him to see the brief cloud in her expression. The nascent concern that had sprouted within him during the silent moments they had shared the previous evening began to take root. “Olen, are you and Alosar going to be setting up psych evals?” she asked. He nodded in reply. He and Alosar had yet to decide on precisely which crew members would be asked to attend evaluations, but there were definitely one or two concerns buried in the crew manifest. Silently, he studied her features, heard the catch in her voice. “Ok, well, let me know when. I'll... see you later?” she said. The question wasn't just for show. It required an answer. “Of course, Bree, I'd like that,” he said, with a genuine conviction. “And... Bree?" he asked, placing a concerned hand on her upper arm. "You know, you don't have to wait for me to schedule an appointment if you want to speak to me... or, umm... you know, Alosar. Either of us. Whichever you choose. You know where to find me... that is... us.” He coughed with slight embarrassment, and, realizing his hand was still on her arm, jerked it away just a little too fast, trying to cover his awkwardness with a too-wide smile. ~Way to go, Olen,~ he thought. (Posted by Olen) (USS Champlain – Bridge – OPS Ensign Bree Frazier – 1110) The cloud cleared away, and the sun shone out again as Brianna returned Olen’s slightly strained smile. ~Charming…~ She had dealt with a lot of men, all kinds, in her life, and she knew a phony when she saw one- and this guy was emphatically not! She lightly returned his gesture in kind, hoping to reassure him that his touch had not been unwelcome; and to re-establish the sense of connection for herself. “I do, Olen. And I will find you”, she replied, her intense green eyes unwaveringly locked onto his soft gray ones. Maybe she would find a little of herself in the process, as well. As Olen left the bridge and Bree turned to her duty station, she sensed that it was as difficult for him as it was for her to go their separate ways. (Posted by Connie Francisco) (USS Champlain- Deck Nine - Jeffries tube OPS – Ensign Smith - 1112) Robert sat against the far wall of the Jeffries tube. ~This has to be in the most cramped space on the ship~ He opened the access panel. He attached his PADD to the power grid read out. "Hmmm this is interesting. It looks like the flow is all wrong in the EPS tap. I wonder if it might be effecting the whole docking latch system." He tapped his comm badge. "Robert to Bree." (reply Frazier) "Are still at OPS on the bridge." (reply Frazier) "Great. I'm in Jeffries tube delta nine on deck nine by docking latch 7. I've found a problem in the flow if the EPS taps. I was wondering if you could check if it was in the whole docking system or just this one." (posted by Robbie) (USS Champlain- Bridge- OPS Ensign Frazier -1113)   When Bree got to her station, she noticed that Robert had wandered off again. ~What am I going to do with that boy?~ she thought, but not unkindly. She had just set to work when her com badge beeped.   "Robert to Bree. Where are you?"   “Frazier here. I’m on the bridge. What’s up?”   "Great. I'm in Jeffries tube delta nine on deck 9, by docking latch 7. I've found a problem in the flow in the EPS taps. I was wondering if you could check if it’s in the whole docking system or just this one?"   “Sure thing, hold on.” Bree brought up the docking systems and studied them quickly but thoroughly. She sighed; it was going to be a long day.   “Robert, it’s not the whole system, but it’s not just on deck 9 either. We’ve got isolated dead and underpowered taps all over the ship. Looks like Swiss cheese from up here”. Bree relayed the locations of the dead taps to Robert, so that he could download them onto his PADD. ~Gotta get myself one of those…~. Then she keyed her com badge again,   “Robert, shall I come down and join you, or would you rather I monitor the progress from up here? You seem to like to work on your own…” She wondered of her teammate could “hear” her grin through his com badge.   (Posted by ConnieF) (USS Champlain- Deck 21 Power Distribution- OPS Ensign Bree Frazier -1123) “I’ll be right there”. Bree logged off and headed for Deck 21. On the way, she thought about how her co-worker might see her. She had heard the slight tension in his voice through the com badge. Considering her penchant for formality and manners on occasions that called for it, it wasn’t the first time someone had gotten the impression that Bree spoke Harvardese all the time, and was in general a stiff-necked bitch. Then, they got confused when the other facets of her personality came out! Sure, she was a “Haavaad” grad, but she didn’t grow up in some ivory tower. The country girl and the street kid she once was were still alive in her too. ~Maybe I should let Robert see that side, before the poor guy decides once and for all I’m a hopeless witch…~ He met her at PD-D21. "Hi Bree. Look I'm sorry for going off. I'm so use to being the only OPS on board so I go and do my own thing. I was not trying to leave you out. I also did not want to disturb your conversation." Bree smiled. “Hey, Robert, s’OK, chill. I’m not mad; I was just giving you crap. When I stop doing that, that’s when you start to worry, OK? Thanks for being so considerate, I appreciate it.” (Reply Smith) Then the OPS crew proceeded to get down to business. As they worked, Bree grinned at Robert. “That was an impressive performance last night, in more ways than one. I noticed you had a little time to spare from wailing on that horn to talk with Rellie.” Bree didn’t miss much at parties. ~Safer that way.~ “Don’t suppose you talked her into letting us into Engineering any time soon, did you? I tried to tour the ship a little with Janeway yesterday, but he just kind of wandered off in the middle of it, so I didn’t get far.” (Posted By Connie Francisco) (USS Champlain - Deck 21 Power Distribution - OPS Ensign Smith - 1125)   Bree smiled. "How dear you, I do not wail thank you very much. I'm first trumpet. I've played for kings." He grinned an her. "That bad ah." Robert though for a moment.   "Well getting back to Rellie said that she would be working in turbo shafts 4 and 6 for most of the day."   Robert checked the flow and shut the panel he was working on. He stood up and checked the PADD. "There looks like we have few problems there too. We could go and give her a hand."   (reply Frazier) Robert nodded. Can we lend you a hand or four?" Robert did not hear Rellie's reply as that moment he stuck his head into the turbo shaft and looked down. Two thoughts went through his mind at the same time. The first was: ~Hmm that's a long way down~ The second was: ~Ow F***~ He backed out quickly and took a few deep breaths.
