"He's as good as it gets." He had deputized several of his security force that had engineering backgrounds (as well as several starbase techs) to install the two tri-cobalt launchers in the second cargo bay. Checking over his PADD, he noted he still had many, many different things to do. (USS Spectre: Ready Room - Pierce Orde - 12.25) "Pierce, I want you to quietly investigate the crew, I hate internal investigations but I need to know if I have any Romulan sympathisers in the crew. The information about us heading into the Zone didn't get released by accident; see what you can find out." Remae sat down at his desk and he looked up at the Security Chief. "Any questions?" "Nae questions, sir. The tri-cobalt beasties you asked for are being installed in the second cargo bay. I talked with our resident specialists, and we agree that one of the forward torpedo bays would be ideal, considerin' the general design. The one closest to Torpedo Control would be perfect." (Reply from Remae) "Carry on." Pierce simply nodded and left. (USS Spectre: Torpedo Control - Pierce Orde - 12.45) Pierce Horatio Orde knelt underneath the console he was working on. It felt good to be working on something technical, after the brief investigation of his own department and the subsequent passing off of that unpleasant duty to his assistant. After the initial work done by Maria and George, the Flux Cannon was almost ready for testing. Unfortunately, there happened to be exactly one person who had long-standing familiarity with the cannon: Pierce Horatio Orde. Well, a Pierce Orde from another universe to be sure, but he figured that was close enough. Sometime over the few months after the shift had happened, he had met a joined Trill and asked him about it felt. ~I remember,~ he thought, ~that the man had told me that it was something between a dream and real. Information that the host couldn't possibly know literally hovered at his fingertips, care of the symbiont. It was something the combined person just knew. After that, I felt better -- surer, even -- about using the knowledge I had been gifted with.~ He climbed out from under the console and brought the panel online. A whistle caught his attention. He glanced over to read a short message: "We're looking for a nice spot to test our new toy," it read. He smirked, knowing that the weapons officer was doing him a favor with that message. ~How much, we'll know later.~ Scrambling to finish, he made the final connections that would allow the device to finish. "Pierce to Engineering," he spoke into his commbadge after a slight tap, "I'm going to need power rerouted to the flux cannon in a few moments. Signify when ready." Tapping the badge again, he opened a channel to the bridge. "Pierce to Bridge. I'm almost ready to bring this beast online. Let me know when you've found a suitable target." (Reply Bridge) (Reply bridge, Engineering, any) (Posted by Lenox) `(USS Spectre, Bridge, Kahila Lono, 12:10) Kahila watched with fascination as the ship's viewscreen registered the distorted movements of the subspace river. She was surprised when Lt. Wilson referred to the Neutral Zone, as she didn't think he had been told any details of the mission. With a glance toward Remae, she realized that he was even more surprised. Then came a further reference from the Science Officer, followed by Remae's announcement: "Yes, we are heading for the Neutral Zone but I am not at liberty to say why at this time. Mr Wilson, remain on course for the Federation Border of the Zone, come to a full stop when we exit the river. Everyone, keep your eyes open, they'll be a full mission briefing when we get closer, please, carry on.", he said and he headed off to his Ready Room. "Kahila, the Bridge is yours, Pierce; can I see you in the Ready Room?" Kahila accessed reports from the Bridge duty stations on her display, monitoring their status, focusing her thoughts on their moment-by-moment progress toward the Border. (USS Spectre, Bridge, Kahila Lono, 12:30) Just after Pierce emerged from his meeting with Captain Remae, Kahila received notice from the Captain to come into the Ready Room. "Yes, Captain," she replied, then she looked toward Pierce, "The Bridge is yours, Lieutenant Orde." As she glanced his way, she could not help but notice his emotion-tone held a new disturbance. She had no time to wonder at this, before she made her way into the Captain's Ready Room. (USS Spectre, Ready Room, Kahila Lono, 12:35) As the Captain filled her in regarding his orders to Pierce, concerning his investigation of the crew for possible Romulan sympathizers, Kahila had a feeling of dismay. ~No wonder Pierce seemed disturbed! Nothing can be worse during a mission than not being able to trust the officers and crew. I've never deliberately used my empathy sense to gain information from crewmates. I hope I don't have to do so now.~ Yet, she knew that if the mission required it, she would do so. Her body ached from tension at these thoughts, and she took a slightly deeper breath than usual. She stood at ease then, before the Captain, when he said, "In addition, to kerb further rumours, can you arrange a meeting of the Senior Staff in the Observation Lounge for 16.00?", he said, making notes in his computer. "Yes, sir. Of course," she replied. "I request permission to work from my office." (reply Remae) posted by Josephine Goodman (Uss Spectre, bridge - Science Officer Horacio Tyrell - 1215) The Captain stood up and made a quick announcement, "Yes, we are heading for the Neutral Zone but I am not at liberty to say why at this time. Mr Wilson, remain on course for the Federation Border of the Zone come to a full stop when we exit the river. Everyone, keep your eyes open, they'll be a full mission briefing when we get closer, please, carry on.", he said and he headed off to his Ready Room. "Kahila, the Bridge is yours, Pierce; can I see you in the Ready Room?" he asked in looking at the TAC/SC. ~ humm, what means all these mysteries about the mission ~ thought Horacio in checking all the sensor systems, if the Captain had in mind to enter the Neutral Zone, they would grandly need it at full effeciency. Then a call from the Captain came in, this time he was asking the FO to come to his Ready Room ~ That Ready Room is becoming a confessional ~ thought he in tapping his commbadge " Tyrell to Engineering." (Reply Longfellow) " Sir, I intend to run a level 2 diagnostic on all the sensor systems so I was wondering if you could reroute more power to those systems during the test ? " he asked (Reply Longfellow) " Understood Sir, I'll let you know when I'll start the procedure. Tyrell out." he replied in beginning to prepare his console for the diagnostic. A few moments later, he heard that the Captain was asking the Ops Officer to have a report briefing with the TAC/SC ~ That Ferengi is newly arrived and he is more in the confidence than the other officers ~ wondered Horacio in standing up from his console. He went in direction of the helm console and began to type a few commands " Lt. I'm gonna start soon a level 2 diagnostic on the sensors systems so you might perhaps experienced some difficulties with the long range sensors." (Reply Wilson) " Normally it will be for a short period, I'll let you know when the diagnostic on the long range sensor will occur. By the way Sir, what are you thinking about all these mysteries on the mission, it's like the command staff is hidding us something, I fell suspicious in the air but it could be only an impression." Horacio said to the helmsman in lowering his tone. Areas here and there were highlighted as parts to complete the flux cannon and even though he had two crewmen working on it he was wondering if he'd get it done in time for his deadline. The only lucky break he'd gotten was that were they wanted to put it was already at a main junction for the EPS and he'd already reset the tolerances for the conduits in order for them to have the extra power flow. =^=Transfer from Main Engineering, =^= came the computer's voice over his combadge. "Huh," Longfellow said as he glanced to the badge as if looking at it might tell him what was going on. =^= Tyrell to Engineering, =^= came out almost instantly after as the computer rerouted the communication. =^=Longfellow here, how can the Engineering Dept help you, =^= Hank asked with a tap to his badge before placing the PADD against the computer access in the turbolift and calling up the crew roster through the LCARS. =^=Sir, I intend to run a level 2 diagnostic on all the sensor systems so I was wondering if you could reroute more power to those systems during the test, =^= he asked Glancing down the roster Hank found Ens (jg) Tyrell, Horacio: Science Officer and shrugged then paused. A level 2 diagnostic would tie up someone with the sensor systems for perhaps a half hour to an hour. Groaning softly to himself he stepped out of the turbolift as it stopped and jogged over to one of the walls and placed the PADD against the position finder there before calling up the maintenance schedule. He didn't know who was working on the new warp drive at the moment and he didn't want to count on it fully yet since it was still experimental. Shaking his head he scheduled in time for the rerouting of the power. =^=Acknowledged, extra power is available for usage when needed and the scheduling of the task is updated to the engineering job queue, =^= Hank reported as he started to run for the CEO's quarters once more. =^=Understood Sir, I'll let you know when I'll start the procedure. (reply any ) (Posted by Mark) <> (USS Spectre, Flux cannon area, Ensign(jg) Hank Longfellow - 12:35) Hank lay on the floor on his back staring up at the systems that he was working on. "Relays to the firing system are functional, but I want that power flow rechecked," Longfellow said to the engineer crouching down next to him. "Okay, but how about we take a break quick," the engineer said as he tinkered with the Threat assessment / tracking / targeting system from a linkup on the side. "Negative, I reported that this device would be ready for testing at 1300 and it will be," he stated firmly. "You didn't leave a pad," the other engineer asked as he paused in his work and glanced down towards where he could see the lower half of Longfellow from under the device. "Negative," Longfellow stated once more, he adjusted the TA/T/TS from his side then scooted out from where he'd been laying. "I'll recheck the power flow, you do a basic confirmation on the configuration of the device with the computer," Hank said as he moved over to one of the walls and placed his PADD up against it. Cycling through the data on the device through ship's systems he found the power flow stats and started to do a walk through of the basic linkages and a recheck on the connections to the more advanced interconnections between the ship and the cannon. Flipping open his tricorder in one hand he examined the schematic on the display of the PADD as he started to scan. "Have the secondary engineering assistant check the cooling systems and run the computer on a simulation of the cannon's cycling capability after firing," Hank said even as he worked quickly. "You mean Jackson," the man asked as the other man in the area looked up at his name then glanced around. Hank sighed softly and glanced over to the engineer who was still wondering who'd just said his name. "Jackson, check the cooling systems and run the computer on a simulation of the cannon's cycling capability after firing," Hank repeated as he finished up and flipped closed his engineering tricorder to place it back at his hip. Turning around Hank started to scan along the wall and walked out of the room for a moment. "Computer, confirm flow regulator specifications have been updated to new tolerances," Hank said as he crouched down and slipped the power pin from his engineering kit and started to take off the panel at the PDM branch. "Tolerances confirmed," the computer stated and Hank frowned slightly. "Computer, explain power drop at this junction," Hank asked as he put the panel to the side and examined behind it. Taking out the little free-floating illuminator he put it in the air to point down on the area as he scanned the panel again. "The..," the computer started to say before Longfellow interrupted it. "Belay last request," Hank stated as he noted the slightly altered configuration of systems behind part of the panel. There had been alterations just before the ship had left the first time that were rushed along and Hank had been responsible for part of it. Now it was popping up to haunt him. Standing up he started to download the ship stats to the PADD and check over the engineering roster against tasks to be done and that were already underway then noted that the Ordes were both working on the warp core still. Nodding to himself he tapped his combadge. =^= Ens Longfellow to Engineering Officer at the Main Engineering Duty Station, =^= he said. =^=Main Engineering here, what can we do, =^= the person asked. =^=I need enough EPS power through the junctions nearest my current location to maintain their updated tolerances, =^= Hank said as he started to put the panel back together again. =^=Understood, we'll be on it as soon as possible, =^= the crewperson said and Hank shook his head. =^=This is a priority, work with Ops to make it happen in the next five minutes, but do make it happen within the next four minutes, =^= Hank stated as he snatched the illuminator from the air and started to moved back into the room. =^=Er… you said five then four minutes, =^= the crewperson said in slight confusion. =^=And in forty-five seconds I'll say three minutes, =^= Hank said flatly as he walked in and checked on the engineers he'd left inside. He nodded as the combadge beeped to tell him the connection had been terminated. He made sure the cannon would be on-line for testing the moment he had said it would. (USS Spectre, Bridge, Co, Captain Remae Ktell - 12.50) If Pierce was correct, the new experimental Flux Cannon was going to be online for testing shortly, Remae didn't know if the Spectre was capable of firing such a weapon but Engineering and the TAC/SC had been working at it with passion for so long, they were going to get their shot. "Helm, find the nearest exit that has been chartered and prepare to return us to normal space. we've got a weapon to test.", said Remae looking at the viewscreen. Shortly thereafter, the ship appeared with a burst of blue light from the river. "All stop and full scan.", said Remae, not wanted to alert anyone who may be around. "Position report.", he asked for a quick location scan, a few hours in the river would mean they'd covered a fair distance from Sector 001. (Reply from anyone wanting to tell us about the area of space we are in) "We need something to shoot. Helm, take us to the nearest astroid field or something benign and similar and engage, at your discretion please.", ordered the CO. (Reply from Wilson) The ship was on its way; a quick weapons test wasn't going to interfere with their plans to meet up with the Romulans, Remae felt that if he had his own surprise for the Romulans, it was at least counter the many they would have ready for them. (Reply from Wilson, Any) (Posted by Anthony Keen) (USS Spectre, FO/Counselor's office, Kahila Lono, 12:45) Kahila came into the office which she'd spent a few late hours organizing the night before. There was a small reception area, and two adjoining rooms, one for counseling purposes, the other for her occupancy as First Officer. She went into the latter and sat down at the desk. She glanced for a moment at the large tropical-seascape holo she'd arranged on the wall to her left. She was just as glad that the room had no window; she could change the view at her own whim. She typed a message into the computer, announcing the 16:00 Officers meeting in the observation lounge, input the intended recipients, and told the computer: to send it, flagging it with a notation for urgency. Then she took out the PADD containing most recent officer and crew reviews, and began entering the notes into her computer files. It was impossible for her to keep her mind from what the Captain had said regarding the possibilitiy of crew misappropriation of information. ~I would certainly like to know Pierce's ideas and findings. I hope we can talk soon.~ (reply any) posted by Josephine Goodman <> (USS Spectre, Bridge, Kahila Lono 16:00) Kahila had spent the last two hours on the Bridge, during the weapons testing. She'd called up on a PADD the basic specs of the new weapon and the projections of its range and efficiency. Though she knew little about engineering, her mind was able to trace the energy routes on the diagrams, and she followed the progress of the testing, both through watching the main screen and monitoring the reports accessed from her chair display. She was aware of Pierce's intense interest in the proceedings, and his genuine pleasure at the performance. ~Congratulations,~ she mentally spoke to him, imaging a smile. A moment later, a message flashed onto her display; and the computer routed a request for a counseling session. "Captain," she said, "I request permission to return to my office. I have an appointment waiting." Receiving permission, Kahila left the Bridge, and took the turbolift to the corridor outside her office. She tapped her combadge and returned the call to an Engineering crewman, arranging for him to come into her office. She called up his records on her office display, saw that this was his first mission, and read what little background he'd reported, before he tapped the anunciator, then entered. Hesitantly, he told of what he called "a bad case of nerves and sleeplessness". After she reassured him that his problem was far from unusual, she administered her usual psyche testing, then demonstrated the fundamentals of meditation technique. Just before he was ready to leave, Kahila received yet another request for an appointment. The next crewman to enter had a slightly more complex problem, involving worries concerning her husband, back on Valhalla. Kahila realized what the woman wanted was someone to listen, which she did. After both had left, Kahila entered their notes into her record. Then, realizing she'd been on duty for longer than her usual shift, she decided to treat herself to dinner at ten-forward. (USS Spectre, Ten Forward, Kahila Lono, 19:00) As Kahila finished her dinner of Shanghai noodles with Thai sauce, she noticed that at the next table, two Ensigns and a Lieutenant were gathering for a card game. Seeing her interest, the Lieutenant motioned her over, and said, "Would you like to join us? We're having a quick game of Rummy before the next shift." "What an excellent idea," Kahila told him. "Thanks for asking me. I haven't played since my early days at the Academy." ~I used to enjoy it. Now it's been so long, and my thoughts have been so busy, I might not even remember how to play.~ But it quickly came back to her, and she thought, ~Maybe something like this would be the thing to use in bringing groups of the crew together.~ (reply any) posted by Josephine Goodman <> (USS Spectre, Bridge, CO, Captain Remae Ktell - 18.00) Remae left the Bridge for the first time since they tested the new weapon, it would be several hours before they arrived on the other end of their Subspace River, till then, life on the Spectre had become quiet and orderly; everyone was getting on with their jobs and duties. (USS Spectre, 10-Forward, CO, Captain Remae Ktell - 18.30) From the main windows facing out the front of the Spectre, the blue swirls of the subspace rivers could be seen, spinning this way and that, no-one seemed to take much notice. Probably would be the last time for a while that he was going to be able to spend time alone. (USS Spectre, Quarters, CO, Captain Remae Ktell - 22.00) A few PADDs that were left on Remae's desk were all that remained of the pile that awaited in a few hours ago, his reports were done as much as they could be and he sent them off to the computer. It wasn't long before he fell asleep at his desk, watching the latest updates from the Federation News Networks, luckily for Remae he was able to sleep without interruption. He rose up, stretching as he did so. The sonic shower awaited and there was always a fresh uniform waiting for him in the replicators. The Spectre was less than one hour from their exit aperture. (USS Spectre, Bridge, CO, Captain Remae Ktell - 06.00) Quickly getting a fast breakfast in 10-Forward, Remae appeared on the Bridge, nodding and walking down to the command chair, he spoke up. "Good morning, what is our ETA?", he punched up the night logs and quickly scanned them. As expected they were close now to their expected exit from the Subspace River. (06.30) The Spectre appeared once more into normal space, this time, they had crossed most of Federation Space in an unbelievable rate, ahead lie the Neutral Zone, not that you could tell by simply looking out the viewscreen. "Yellow Alert.", ordered the Captain but he didn't ordered the shields raised or the cloak engaged, someone strangely some people thought but if they were about to question his orders, no one did so vocally. "Full scan please, but in particular, I want long range continuous scans of this sector of space.", he said, sending the co-ordinates from his mission orders to all stations. "Lt Lono, I think its time for that conference, please assemble all Senior Officers into the Observation Lounge.", he said standing once more to head there himself. (Reply from Lono) Remae headed to the OL once more, preparing himself to brief the officers on the upcoming mission, how much did he dare tell them, the crew was by and large, inexperienced, could they handle what was to happen next? (Reply from Lono, Any) (Posted by Anthony Keen) --------------- (USS Spectre, Personal Quarters, Ensign(jg) Hank Longfellow - 20:30) Hank slowly stepped into his quarters once more then slipped the towel from around his neck. Folding it up carefully he placed the towel into the replicator and recycled it back into the system before ordering his jumja tea. He had soaked in the whirlpool after work for a while but even the heat of it still didn't take away all the aches within him and tiredly he moved with his teacup over to sit down at the desk. Calling up the last file he'd been working on he stared as the monitor on the desktop as he sipped his tea. Reaching out a hand he called up the systems diagram for the power units and traced his fingertips over the chemical systems of the tiny craft before he sat up a little straighter with a wince. Calling up the menu for the monitor he tracked down the information on chemical power systems he'd found earlier and went through it until he found some of the upgrades he was looking for. Mission: The Prisoners Dilemma, Day 2 Stardate: 2406.03.10 (USS Spectre, Personal Quarters, Ensign(jg) Hank Longfellow - 03:17) The empty teacup sat beside him as he leaned on the desk with his elbows. Propped up he examined the work he'd done so far. Absently he picked up the teacup to take a sip but noticed for what was the third time that it was empty save for the orange ring around the inside. Tiredly he tapped at the monitor and saved his work before he stood up on wobbly legs. ~Less then eight hours before my shift starts,~ he thought to himself with a frown as he moved slowly and stiffly over to the bed. "I'll be fine with six hours sleep," he whispered to himself softly as he dropped onto the bed and jerked the pillow from where it had sat. Curling up almost around the pillow he finally let sleep take him. (reply any ) (Posted by Mark)
