Might I enquire as to your location?" =^=I'm in my ready room, deck 1 of course,=^= Rich quirked his eyebrow slightly. "Very well Captain, I am on my way." =^=Understood, Davis out=^= Rich continued walking until he found a turbolift. "Deck 1" he said quietly. A few minutes later he found himself on the bridge, which was alive with activity. He paused for a moment to look around, the bridge lights were slightly muted from every-day bridges and everything was open-access, easy to get in and out of. This ship was built for war, and so was the bridge. He stepped up to the ready-room and pressed the enunciator. (Reply: Davis) Once he had been cleared, he stepped inside the room and came to attention. "Commander Lee, reporting as Admiral LoDona's aide to the Dennison." He said simply. (Reply: Davis) (Posted by Trout) ================================================================== Mission: A New Beginning, Day 1 Stardate: 2407.01.17 (USS Dennison-Ready Room-CO Madison Davis-08:04) As communications with Lee closed, Madison awaited for his arrival to her ready room. All of which only took but a few moments as she then heard the chime go off. "Come," she called, knowing full well who it was. Taking a seat behind her desk, she then watched as he entered and snapped to attention. "Commander Lee, reporting as Admiral LoDona's aide to the Dennison." Folding her arms across her chest, she said, "At ease Commander, we're not at war yet....at least with the Dennison. Which reminds me, I must check on status updates on repairs and refits," she said, thinking aloud. "Have a seat Commander Lee," she said, making the gesture at the same time. <> Leaning into her desk, crossing her arms on it in front of her, she looked at Lee and said, "Now, I've already spoken to Admiral LoDona about everything from this ship to the war itself that's going on outside. Hopefully you have some more news or something better to offer me?" (Reply: Lee, any) (Posted by: Stacey) =========================================================================== Mission: A New Beginning, Day 1 Stardate: 2407.01.17 (USS Dennison - Ready Room - Commander Richard Ian Lee - 08:05) "At ease Commander, we're not at war yet....at least with the Dennison. Which reminds me, I must check on status updates on repairs and refits," she said, thinking aloud. "Have a seat Commander Lee," Rich settled his seven and a half foot frame into one of the chairs... typically uncomfortable for one of his size, and folded his hands together. He waited patiently as the Captain leaned onto her desk and said, "Now, I've already spoken to Admiral LoDona about everything from this ship to the war itself that's going on outside. Hopefully you have some more news or something better to offer me?" Lee's lips curled up in a ghost of a smile. "I asked much the same after I arrived." He said dryly. Rich was another out-cast from another universe, probably why he'd been chosen as LoDona's aide until Davis and her crew were settled. "Unfortunately, I do not." He pulled a PADD from an inner-pocket of his uniform. "I do, however, have updated command codes for the fleet. Updated enemy movement reports from Strategic Operations. And what's better... I have your orders from Admiral LoDona, marked time-sensitive and urgent." Rich placed the PADD gently on the desk in front of the Captain. "I am fully briefed in them and can give you any details you crave once you've had a read." Hopefully you have some more news or something better to offer me?" Madison left her question hanging in the air, awaiting his reply. As she watched Lee's lips curl into a smile, she wondered what he was about to say. "I asked much the same after I arrived." He said dryly. Rich was another out-cast from another universe, probably why he'd been chosen as LoDona's aide until Davis and her crew were settled. "Unfortunately, I do not." Cocking her head to the side, then back again, she thought, ~Worth a shot.~ "I do, however, have updated command codes for the fleet. Updated enemy movement reports from Strategic Operations. And what's better... I have your orders from Admiral LoDona, marked time-sensitive and urgent." At this, her eyebrows shot up and her eyes glimmered with excitement. The Dennison had been sitting in this space dock and she was ready to take her for a spin. Picking up the PADD, she briefly scrolled through it and listened as Lee continued. "I am fully briefed in them and can give you any details you crave once you've had a read." Stopping what she was doing, she looked at Lee and said, "I'll take you up on that...once I get done reading this, of course." Looking at the PADD there was a lot of information she had to go through and Madison knew she had to get through it quickly so she could update herself as well as the crew before they even left space dock on Geneva. Almost forgetting, she then extended her hand and awaited for his, shaking his hand and saying, "Thank you for all your help." <> "While I'm muddling through this, in the mean time you can take a look around the ship if you'd like, get to know some of the crew....it's your call." "While I'm muddling through this, in the mean time you can take a look around the ship if you'd like, get to know some of the crew....it's your call." Rich stood to his full height, "Very well, Captain." He came briefly to attention, and then turned to exit the room. TAC/SC - 09:51) Nikada had made it to the ceremony early, but had not done so in order to make time for mingling. It didn't bother her that she was not familiar with anyone in this combined crew. She wasn't one for small talk, but she was good at it if she had to be. As the doors to the shuttlebay slid open, Nikada noticed that those who were already there stood on one side of the room or the other.... no one closed the gap between sides. Nikada mentally rolled her eyes and let out an annoyed huff. She could tell the adjusting period for these people was going to be tedious, and that she wouldn't enjoy it. A few crewmen nearest the door looked her way. She nodded in the way of a greeting, but not all of them acknowledged her. With that, Nikada shook her head disappointedly and entered the room. Nikada made it a point not to stand nearer to either side, and her stance in the middle of the room brought about plenty of whispers. She didn't care, and stood her ground until the CO arrived. As Davis came forward Nikada backed to one side, not paying attention to whether or not there were any familiar faces behind her. As she wrote the reports, Johns and Ryan’s emotions came into view. John was relieving Ryan of duty, and she understood why. She didn't think it was entirely the best decision, but she understood why she did it. John walked out, and Trace waited for a call. =/\= Maines to Allel...=/\= Ryan said. Trace put a small sympathetic smile on her face. She knew that Ryan would be able to hear the emotions on the other end. "Hello Ryan." (Reply Ryan) Trace nodded. "I understand. Come on up and we can talk about it." (Reply Ryan) "All right, Trace out." Commander. I'mm glad you could make it so quickly. I was afrraid I'd need to have you sedated firrst. We need to talk. Please comme into mmy office." The CMO's office was much larger than he was used to. One could actuallly hold small meetings in it, which was jsut fine for the admiral. He offered a chair to Sasine and sat in the one beside his, rather than behind his desk. He reached over and tapped the computer channel on his desk. "Do not disturrb mmode." The computer beeped in acknowledgement. Then he looked over at the FO. "I don't want to play gammes with you Lt. Commmanderr, so I will be dirrect. I amm concerrned about yourr condition. Up rreview of yourr serrvice rrecorrd I found severral anommolies. One being that is no mmention of yourr condition at all. The counselorr gave mme the immprression that this has been a prroblemm forr a while. When did it begin?" John sighed. "It’s not in my service record because it’s not a treatable medical condition. Trace can support me, but it’s not something I can take medication for. If I take meds to suppress my telepathy, it will spread through my brain and sedate me, maybe even kill me." John looked down quickly. "You will excuse me if this bores me a bit. I've been through this entire meeting several times in my life. It even made it so I had to wait two years extra to join Starfleet." (Reply Gr'iann) John nodded. "It’s been going on all my life. I am sure you are familiar with the USS Enterprise, and her 'Tin Man' mission. My mind is much like the betazoid that resides on that ship. But fortunately, I spent the first four years of my life in a hospital, with betazoid doctors that helped me twenty four seven. I was able to then be released, and I can perform my duties." "If there was one thing that Counselor Allel said that was trrue," Gr'iann said, "it was that I rreally did not know you orr yourr condition. I need to rrectify that situation. So if you don't mmind, I need to know everrything that you can tell mme." "All right. The condition makes it so that I cannot create mental barriers for more than a few seconds. I can be fairly overloaded in several seconds, and I do have some problems around major telepathic cultures. I can stay on Betazed, but that is about it. The planet Vulcan puts me to sleep in several seconds. It overloads me. "Another thing is that I am extremely aware of people around me. Since I cannot create mental barriers, I cannot screen out thoughts. It is extremely helpful in some situations, but not in all. If you give me a week or two, I will seem almost like a normal betazoid, only because I will have gotten to know the minds of the entire crew." John paused. "My condition also makes me extremely friendly, as a side effect. I can make friends pretty easily, and I get onto first name basis with those around me very fast. I treat everyone like family. I feel for everyone. I sometimes even skip things to help others. In fact, that’s where I was right before this." (Reply Gr'iann, any) (posted by Nate Bodenstadt) =========================================================================== Mission: A New Beginning Day 2 Stardate 2407.01.18 (USS Dennison- Sickbay- CMO- Admiral Gr'iann-1031) Gr'iann listened to Sasine's reasons for for the lack of information and fought the urge to roll his eyes. He had hoped that this was going to be easy, but he had a feeling it was not. "Forrgive mme if I amm borring you Lt. Commmanderr, but as yourr rrecorrds werre all but destrroyed, the only inforrmmation I have is frrromm yourr serrvice rrecorrd. You mmay have gone overr this mmany timmes but this is a firrst forr mme. As I amm the one who is going to be trreating you frromm herre on, it's immporrtant that I have as much inforrmmation as I can." John nodded. I was able to then be released, and I can perform my duties." Sasine went on to explain his affliction. It was his inability to create a mental barrier to keep out stray thoughts. As he listened he continued to be amazed at how the Betazoid had managed to remain sane after all these years. In his recent research he had found that every other single telepathic entity with that problem had either gone insane or killed themselves. The more that Sasine talked the more he became concerned, especially with him being in a command position. But he waited for him to stop before he began to speak on his concerns. Then he took a deep sigh. He couldn't help but feel that the Betazoid already knew what he was going to say. Caitians have notoriously poor psychic shielding ability. They are easily read. He stood up and paced, his tail curling to show its own anxiety. "Let mme starrt by once again exprressing mmy concerrn overr yourr condition. You mmay be used to it, and Counselor Allel mmay be worrking with you on it, but I rreally don't see how that aleviates mmy concerrns. You say that in a community such as Vulcan you can be overrloaded. What would happen if we encounterred such a community on a mmission. It wouldn't do to have our FO be succummed to somme force beyond ourr contrrol. You also say that in a week orr you will be so used to ourr thoughts that you harrdly notice themm. Do you underrstand how disturrbing that sounds. You will be in ourr mminds continuously. We have absolutely no prrivacy of thought, everr. I ammm sorry Lt. Commanderr but I don't find that verry commforrting. It is verry nice that you "know" everryone on a firrst namme basis, but that's because you know all of theirr thoughts. I amm not happy at all with that prrospect." He sat down and tried to settle himself. He hated what he was thinking, but he really didn't see a way around it. "You speak of the Tin Mman Prroject, which I am well awarre of. Are you awarre of the final solution to Tamm Elbrrun's own dilemma with his ability. He exiled himmself inside Tin Mman and has never been hearrd frromm since. Again not a thrrilling prrospect forr a firrst officerr." Then he looked at Sasine. "You probably know what I amm about to say alrready so I will just say it. I am not satisfied that you arre fit forr commmand. No mmatterr how much prreperration you have, the constant bommbarrdmment of thoughts is still to mmuch forr anyone to handle. I amm relieving you of yourr duties until a solution to this ... afflictionm, has been found. I guarrantee that it will rrecieve mmy highest prriorrity. I amm sorry Lt. Commmanderr, but frromm mmy point of view you arre not fit forr command." (Reply Sasine) (Posted by Al Muir) ================================================================== Mission: A New Beginning Day 2 Stardate 2407.01.18 (USS Dennison- Captain's Ready Room - CSO- Lieutenant Jewort Trewe -1103) Jewort snorted with no small measure of annoyance as he moved to the Captain's Ready Room. He knew that he had been conspicuously absent from the ceremony in the morning, but seeing as it was due to keeping some of the new engineering monkeys that came on board from messing up the Dennison, he figured he had a good reason. These engineers proved no better than the last lot, no matter what their qualifications. He reached out and pressed the chime. (Reply Davis) Jewort walked in and regarded the Captain analytically. A million different points and counterpoints blustered through his mind and began to order themselves. Despite the fact the Rigelian race didn't shun their emotions, the offshoot of the Vulcan race still possessed no small amount of logical mindset. Jewort saw what was, in essence, a very young captain in front of him whom he knew nothing about and it gave him both pause and concern. Just like most of the chief staff, no Starfleet records and seemingly no pasts, it was more than a little unnerving. "Captain, I'm Lieutenant Jewort Trewe, your Chief Science Officer. I was on the team that built this class originally and I headed the team that refitted her after she was captured and I would appreciate it if your engineers would follow the specified guidelines at least until we leave spacedock and see what does and doesn't work. The last group of engineering monk... staff... almost wrecked Dennison before we even could check the systems, Sir," stated Jewort slightly more gruffly than he had intended. He was annoyed with them crawling all over, especially without having any lip service paid to him at all. He knew they were just doing what they felt was their jobs, but the could have at least been mindful of the fact that they could ask him questions before screwing around with the works. (Reply Davis) "Sir, quite frankly, this ship is... it’s the first one I've followed from design stage to completion. I'm a bit protective of Her, I hope you understand that. Now we've been crewed by a vast group people who seem to have no official Starfleet records, no professional credentials and no reputations. I hope you can understand why some of us might be a bit spooked. This ship represents years of work for me," stated Jewort, now calming and moderating his tone. (Reply Davis) (Posted by Jeff) =========================================================================== Mission: A New Beginning, Day 2 Stardate: 2407.01.18 (USS Dennison-Ready Room-CO Madison Davis-11:04) Sitting back in her chair once more in her ready room, she could finally breathe now that the 'ceremonial' stuff was done, and the ship was officially hers. Now all she had to do was pour over reports on the systems status, getting everyone to report for their post, and shove the ship out of the dock. All not much listed, but very big steps indeed. ~Alright....now Crewman J'Conk can go straight to....~ Her thoughts were inturrupted by the chime of the door as she sat in her ready room. "Come!" She called, but not veering from her thoughts. As she heard the door open and shut, only then did she glance up to see who it was. ~Trewe....~ She recalled him from her crew manifest, but had never personally met him. However she had heard a lot about him from the past crew who worked with him and...well....most of them didn't have too kind things to say about him. The words, 'arrogant, condescending, and impossible to work with' all came to mind. But she wasn't here to listen to what everyone else had to say about him. She had to make her own first impression of him and reguard his work status with his attitude and personality before she could do so. The last group of engineering monk... staff... almost wrecked Dennison before we even could check the systems, Sir," he said. Raising her eyebrow and leaning back into her chair, she replied, "First of all...Mr. Trewe...we are all here to do our jobs. Now there is a lot going on around here and everyone's probably just losing their heads in the job and getting tired and cranky, which is understandable. Secondly, around here we refer to the crew either in their ranks, name or whatever department they work in. We do not refer to them as 'monks'....as you so kindly covered up. But then again, I assume you're just as tired as everyone else around here so.....that being said, what is it that I can do for you?" "Sir, quite frankly, this ship is... it’s the first one I've followed from design stage to completion. I'm a bit protective of Her, I hope you understand that. Now we've been crewed by a vast group people who seem to have no official Starfleet records, no professional credentials and no reputations. I hope you can understand why some of us might be a bit spooked. This ship represents years of work for me," stated Jewort. Madison could tell that he seemed calmer than he was when he first entered her ready room, and was pleased to be seeing two different sides of him already. Getting up and moving around to the front of her desk to face Trewe, she said, "I do understand your fears, as I myself have been through this before. I must say this is the first time I've been on this side of the coin, but I can honestly say I know what you're going through." Pausing for a moment, she folded her arms across her chest. "This whole situation is going to take some getting used to...for both parties. Unfortunately, right now all I can suggest is that we work together and get to know each other on off duty hours. All we can do is at least respect each other until such time trust can be honored." <> Seeing that he seemed to agree with most of her statement, she then circled back around to behind her desk and stood facing him. "If that is all Lieutenant?" She then watched as he started to walk away, then stopped him short with another comment. "Oh...and by the way...I've gotten numerous reports on your work so far. I can honestly say I'm impressed and you do very outstanding work. Let's just see if we can keep that up, eh?" <> A small smile started to creep across her face as she watched Trewe stop for her comment, then continue out the door after she had made it. "Let's hope his fears will never be consummated," she said to herself, then went back to work. (Reply: Trewe, any) (Posted by: Stacey) =========================================================================== Mission: A New Beginning Day 2 Stardate 2407.01.18 (USS Dennison- Main Engineering - CSO- Lieutenant Jewort Trewe -1321) Jewort listened to the rather blustery man's talk about being 'dissected', he supposed he meant he had an appointment with the ship's counselor. Jewort felt a momentary wave of sympathy for the man. He hated counselors too. Jewort nodded to the man, "Perhaps we can discuss some other design issues later. I am available if you need me. Like all ships, she has her quirks." With that said, Jewort walked away, watching the remaining engineering monkeys rushing around. Finally satisfied that they weren't going to destroy his ship before it left spacedock, Jewort headed for the turbolift, "Sickbay," he said aloud. He hadn't stopped in to check on the sickbay since the Admiral had issues with the circuitry several days before. He also had a few questions for the Caitian. (USS Dennison- Sickbay - CSO- Lieutenant Jewort Trewe -1342) Jewort arrived in sickbay and then walked in. He looked around, it was fairly empty all things considered. He scanned the biobeds and other mechanisms briefly. ~Everything seems okay.~ and then he found Admiral Gr'iann. "Hello Admiral, I decided to stop by and ensure everything was now functional for you. Have you seen any problems?" asked Jewort looking directly at the large cat-man. (Reply Gr'iann) Jewort nodded, "I have something else to ask you about. The crew that is now boarding... they're... strange. I can't find records, pasts, anything for them. I've never heard any of their names before and have no idea who they are. I'm more than a little concerned and I know that several other crewmembers are as well. They have been given a brand new and extremely powerful vessel after all," stated Jewort in a hushed tone. He was certain that the Admiral knew his service record, knew of his past. He was also certain that the Admiral realized that with his personality and his personal stake in the Dennison that there was no way he was going to 'let this go'. (Reply Gr'iann) (Posted by Jeff) ========================================================================== Mission: A New Beginning Day 2 Stardate 2407.01.18 (USS Dennison- Sickbay- CMO- Admiral Gr'iann-1344) Gr'iann was starting to get a headache. His day hadn't started off well. The whole situation with Sasine was hard, and it was not easy to relieve a man of his duties, no matter what they may think. He understood what Sasine was saying, but everything that he knew, and all of his research showed that sooner or later the man would crack, and he didn't want to be held responsible for that. He also didn't want others to pay the price for his trying to be fair. Life just wasn't fair. If it were then John Sasine would not have such an affliction. He sat at his desk going through some information when the sound of someone at his door disturbed him. He looked up to see Jewort looking in at him. "Hello Admiral, I decided to stop by and ensure everything was now functional for you. Have you seen any problems?" asked Jewort. "Ahh Lieutenant," Gr'iann smiled a big fangy smile, "comme in, comme in. I can use a frriendly face about now." Jewort nodded, "I have something else to ask you about. Gr'iann knew that this was bound to happen eventually. He'd just hoped that it would have been later than sooner. "Sit down please," he indicated to the chair across from him. "Commputerr, seal mmy doorr." The computer beeped in response. "Lt," Gr'iann began, "what I amm about to tell you is in the strrictest confidence. you arre not torrepeat it. What is not generrally known is that theirr prrevious ship had an accident which sent these people to a univerrse to which they arre strrangerrs. They arre frromm the futurre. He cocked an eyebrow as Gr'iann said they needed help. Jewort started to shake his head slowly. "Permission to speak freely, Sir," requsted Jewort slowly. There were things he needed to get off his chest and he felt somewhat more comfortable at this point. (Reply Gr'iann) "So far from what I've seen, they don't want our help. They don't want to intergrate with us. They don't seem to want anything to do with us. They're closed, perhaps they believe they're superior because they come from the future... I don't know. I'll do my best, but so far they don't inspire much confidence," stated Jewort directly. He had tried to speak to the captain and had been treated to a non-conversation. The Cheif engineer had brushed him off as quickly as possible. Evidently Starfleet hadn't evolved any better manners in the future, in fact they seemed to be in decline. (Reply Gr'iann) "I'm not exactly the most... easy to approach person... however, I know disinterest when I see it. I did try to talk to the CEO and he was more than a little disinterested with me, in fact he brushed me off as soon as he could. I'm willing to try to work with them, but so far all I've seen are bland, humourless and disinterested people. Gr'iann nodded and gestured for the CSO to continue. He listened to the man's concerns about the crew. he had some very valid concerns. Sasine's own reaction to the help that Gr'iann offered was a prime example. He understood that the universe they came from, they were pretty much on their own. But now, that help is available, they need to learn to accept it. "I'll do my best, but so far they don't inspire much confidence," stated Jewort. Gr'iann nodded. "I underrstand yourr misgivings, but we mmust do ourr best to supporrt themm. "I hope your right Admiral, but they worry me and I don't particularly want them to hurt my ship," he replied. (Reply Gr'iann) "Don't get me wrong, I know its not really mine, but you know what I mean. We're both two old warhorses, you and I. Had I not run afoul a certain rather insane admiral, I'd imagine my rank would be more reflective my years by this point. One way or another, I'd rather be taken feet first off this vessel than let someone else subvert it again for evil ends," Jewort stated, his eyes flashing anger just thinking about Doenitz. (Reply Gr'iann) "I first started working on this class of starships before we knew anything about what he was up to. This is one of the only ones that's left, and we had to extricate it from Doenitz's grip to save her. I'm a bit protective." (Reply Gr'iann) "So, here's a question for you. It was actually Sasin himself that gave him the clue. He had spent the first part of his life hospitalized on Betazed. The hospital he mentioned hasn't been established yet, but apparently there is some kind of research going on there that was very promising. But the most promising research was from a Betazoid on active duty on the Steel Talons. "Open a line to The Steel Talons," he ordered. "A securred line to Admmirral LoDona. Let mme know when he has been reached." Then he tapped his comm badge. "Gr'iann to Captain Davis. I mmay have solution to ourr prroblemm with Lt. Commanderr Sasine. A couple seconds passed before the Federation symbol was replaced by the image of a caitain. "Rroberrt," Gr'ianns smile showed his full fangs, "it's good to see you. Although you look verry tirred. Arre you getting enough rrest?" "Of course not." LoDona said as he leaned back in his chair and folded his hands together. "The usual." "Then let mme get to the point," the Caitian said. "You have a Betazoid on yourr staff who is doing worrk on telepathic shielding. I was wonderring if I could borrrow him for a timme." He doesn't seemm to rrealize the dangerr he is in." the Admiral finished. Robert mused for a few moments, "Tarkin!" He barked as he looked off screen. One of his aides stopped what he was doing and came to attention. Robert said, "Who's the strongest betazoid telepath we have working on Project Blue?" "Lieutenant Commander Riis Capstain, Sir." "Right, cut him orders to the Dennison, effective immediately. I'll send him further information within twenty minutes." "Aye Sir!" Robert focused back on the Admiral. "You will have your telepath, complete with the necessary carte blanche to do it right. Send me this officers records and your medical report." As she got closer, she could see Gr'iann sitting there, his tail curling in odd motions she had never seen before. ~Must be aggitation?~ She questioned herself whenever it came to moods of Caitains...they could be easy to read at times and hard at others. "Doctor," she called, as she stuck her head in his office. "You wanted to see me about Sasine?" <> Going into his office, she did as he asked and took a seat across the desk from him. "I can tell by the look on your face this is not something I want to hear...." <> Assuming her 'hit me hard' stance as she sat, she folded her arms across her chest and crossed her right leg over her left, sitting straight up, awaiting what Gr'iann was about to say to her reguarding her first officer. "You wanted to see me about Sasine?" "Ah, Captain," he said, "come in, come in." He quickly moved the padds on his desk, and offered the chair across from him. "Please, have a seat." "Actually, this mmight be good news. The bad news is that I know of no way to Lt. commmanderr Sasine. I have had to go outside mmy arrea of influence and involve Admmirral LoDona. Letting a slow sigh escape her lips, she suddenly wished this whole event had never happened. Well...it was so sudden, but rather she pushed it off not wanting to think about what happened. With her type of personality she was prone to just dealing with things as they came, and moving on. This however, she wasn't so sure if she would ever get over. But right now she couldn't think about this as she had bigger fish to fry. "So...have you or LoDona chosen someone that could help Mr. Sasine?" "I took the liberrty of having this Betazoid, Lieutenant Commander Riis Capstain, transferred to the Dennison," Gr'iann said. Raising an eyebrow, she thought, ~Took...the liberty?~ As this was now her ship and she was in command, it infuriated her a little as to the fact that Gr'iann had just done so without even speaking to her first. However, he was an admiral and she knew he outranked her....plus right now she needed the best for her first officer and she knew Gr'iann was only trying to help and get things rolling. Standing up, she said, "Alright....but I want to know the minute this new transfer arrives," she stated, as she turned and walked out of sickbay, more on the edgy side than when she came in. (USS Dennison-En Route to Engineering-CO Madison Davis-14:44) As Madison walked the halls of the ship, she saw many people busying themselves with the final touches of the refit. She also noticed the many stiff and riged crewmembers at attention on every turn, and wondered how long it would take for them to relax a bit. She knew she was a hard and stiff captain, but she did make allowances after all. It wasn't long until she finally arrived at her destination, and she walked through the double doors of engineering.....possibly the busiest place on the ship yet. Some crew members snapped to attention while others went about their work, not even knowing she was present. A small smile pierced her lips as she remembered those days about herself. "At ease, back to work," she simply stated as she walked around to the CEO's office. Sticking her head in, she saw that it was empty. ~Where's Maines?~ "Ensign Hill," she called out in a raised voice. He was the first person she'd recognized upon looking up. "Where's Lt. Maines?" Looking a bit flustered, he replied, "I--I'm not sure, ma'am." Folding her arms across her chest, she said, "Computer, locate Lt. Maines." [Lt. Maines is on Deck 8, Section 34C.] The computer responded. She noticed the Ensign in front of her wincing a bit, as if wondering why he didn't think to do that himself, in which she hadn't met to put him in that position. "Well, it looks as if he's in our counselor's office," she replied, then said, "Don't worry about it Ensign, and keep up the good work." Noticing a boost in his stance, she figured he probably took the compliment nicely. Upon turning and walking out of engineering, she was then contacted by Gr'iann once more. =^=Gr'iann to Captain Davis, I just want to inforrmm you that ourr guest has arrrived, and I plan to intrroduce himm to Lt. Commmanderr Sasine immmediately.=^= ~I guess I'll just have to catch up with you later Maines,~ she thought as she turned on her heel and headed back the way she came. (USS Dennison-Sickbay-CO Madison Davis-15:13) Upon entering sickbay, Madison was the only one present aside from the doctor. "That was awefully fast...you Admirals don't mess around do you?" She said, half meaning it and half as a joke. She only wondered how Gr'iann would take it. <> It was only about a minute or two past that, when the doors swished open and in front of her stood one mean, stern looking yet honerable man. The kind of person she was reminded of was her ex villian back on the Relentless....one that particularly didn't matter now. However they both resembled the same traits. Eager to receive orders and carry them out on the double. "Lieutenant Commander Riis Capstain, reporting for special duty as ordered, Admiral." Madison watched as the Admiral greeted him, then she took her chance to do so as well. "Captain Madison Davis," she said, holding out her hand for a firm hand shake. "Glad to have you onboard. I believe the Admiral has most of your duty details," she said, glancing towards Gr'iann and letting him have the floor. (jg) William Galway - 14:45) A flower. A nice, harmless flower. A bit of white. A bit of yellow. A bit of green. A nice, small, harmless flower... living in the field of endless, smooth, green grass... ... suddenly crushed to the very ground by a black military boot. Boot of a faceless Federation marine... ... ~What...?~ William woke up. His senses quickly came into proper order as he started to experience the information processed by his brain. He had been asleep. "Yo man, everything's OK?" He heard from the guy sitting at his side. William took a look around. Everything looked as he remembered. He was travelling in a small shuttlecraft refitted for long range personnel transport, with a bunch of fellow officers, from different divisions, sitting at both sides of the low compartment, all facing the other row. "Yeah, thanks. Everything's fine." Galway smiled for a moment. The PADD with the schematics of the ship he was assigned to was still lying at his knees. He must had felt asleep sometime after the shuttle went into the subspace river. Galway rubbed his face and eyes, stretching his back, arms and legs. There was little space. His neighbour noticed that. "Don't worry, we are just about to jump out of the river..." And at that very moment something shook the shuttle really hard. ~And that was that exit, I presume...~ Galway was glad he still had the seatbelts fastened. The Captain announcement bell sounded. =/=Sorry for that fellows, the terminus isn't friendly even for the capital ships. We will be arriving at Geneva in 5 minutes. You wish you had windows there... hehehe =\= The passengers exchanged looks. It seemed that all of them, being mostly ensigns and non-commissioned officers, were quite familiar with the Truidin class starbase design, as one of those beauties could be seen even from Earth. Most of the people aboard had probably classes about starbases and some of them had visited such starbases already, during their Academy years. Not to mention the holoprograms about piloting various types of vessels in and around such bases. Still, some part of each and every one of the people seated around was eager to pilot the shuttle they were flying on just to experience the smashing view of the Starbase approach... "You are assigned to the Dennison, aren't you?" Asked the human ensign sitting next to Galway. He was wearing a teal uniform. A medical or science officer. "Yup." "I have peeked over at the schematics. You are really lucky..." "Yup." "Such an enormous vessel, outfitted with the cutting edge technology..." "Yup." Both guys looked at each other. They both started laughing. "... hehe, yeah thanks. I know - I'm pretty lucky alright. I already love the ship. I guess we both wonder how it will all be on the first assignment... By the way - where are you stationed?" "Geneva." He said with a little proud smile. "No kidding? And you call me 'lucky'...? Now that is what I call b-i-g!" "Oh come on, but you will travel so far... You will see things..." "Oh yeah, I'm sure I will. It is usually the ships that defend the starbases so I'm pretty sure I will see my ass getting kicked!" They again fell into laugh. "Science?" "Medical." "Ah! So you will have the opportunity to patch my butt as well... Glad you are here - right now, the fleet couldn't have too much medics." "Yeah..." They both went sad and silent as the talk reminded them that it is a war they are going into... =/= Approaching dock. Remain seated.=\= A little shake could be felt as the impulse engines were turned off and the dock's tractor beam took over. Galway sighed. "Alright. We will be docking any minute now. It's been nice chatting to you, pal." They shook hands. "Same here. Hope we bump into each other again." A slight jolt could be felt. (Starbase Geneva - Ens. (jg) William Galway - 15:00) =/=Alright, ladies - welcome to Starbase Geneva. The 52nd Fleet airlines wish you a pleasant stay. HAHAHA!=\= The passengers exchanged the looks again. =/=Sorry, guys... Just don't get yourself killed... Good luck.=\= The rear entry ramp opened and the strong white light of the shuttlebay poured into the shuttle. Everybody started unbuckling their seatbelts. Galway stood up and took his bag from the compartment above his head, still holding the PADD with his assignment and ship's general technical layout. He let several passengers out and then left himself. The shuttlebay was one of the smaller ones, designed for serving a maximum of 2-3 smaller crafts, depending on the size. The vessel Galway came in was the only one there. Along the other passengers, William was directed by two security officers into one particular exit. There, in a large room, probably some kind of converted storage area, another security team was thoroughly checking up the newcomers. Galway stopped at one of the desks. The security officer just finished talking with the previous guest and turned her attention to Galway. "Welcome to the station. May I have your orders?" Galway quickly handed the officer his PADD. "Ah... USS Dennison... Chief OPS... is that correct?" "Yes, ma'am." The security officer turned his attention to Galway's bag. "We are ordered to inspect any luggage brought onto the station. You know - the security precautions..." "Of course." Galway put the bag onto the table. "There are some civilian clothes, several personal items and several books." The officer started writing on the computer terminal placed on the desk's side. "I am afraid we will have to take your luggage for now. We will also have to keep the PADD to scan its software. Both will be delivered to your quarters at Dennison in half an hour." The officer continued not turning her eyes away from the terminal's monitor. "Your data have been already input into the system. Dennison has been notified of your arrival." The officer paused for a moment. "I will arrange with Dennison's security to meet you at the airlock three at... 16 hudred hours. This should give you some time to take a look around the station. Is that OK for you?" The officer smiled to Galway. "Couldn't ask for more, ma'am." "Great. You are free to go." The officer stood up and pointed the exit to Galway. "Thank you, ma'am. Have a nice day." "You too, ensign." Galway left the room. There was another guard outside, but everything else looked absolutely normal. He was standing in an enormous, long, slightly curved promenade. It consisted of several levels and it was probably one of the main hallways in the dock section of the Starbase. There were many embranchments and people were all over the place. Civilians and Starfleet personnel alike, walking in all direction, sitting at a number of benches in several recreational areas, just going on by their business. Several minutes have passed while Galway was watching all that. Finally he took a deep breath, checked his uniform, badge at his chest and pip at his collar, and proceeded to the terminal integrated into the wall nearby. He pressed a button on the LCARS interface. "Computer, tell me where USS Dennison is docked in relation to my current location." [USS Dennison is docked 392 meters in this direction,...] A graphical arrow appeared on the terminal's monitor [... two decks below.] ~ 392 meters? But that means... ~ Galway looked around. There was one observation lounge close by. He slowly walked up there. He didn't see the people he was passing by. Neither those sitting on the benches, between patches of greenery, nor those sitting at the tables eating, drinking and chatting about problems of every day life. His eyes were set on the transparent shield and the vast space behind it. Slowly, as he approached the enormous observation port more and more of the interior main dock area was visible. Lots of smaller crafts were flying by, mostly worker bees, however larger battle crafts were also visible in the distance. But Galway's attention was focused on one single hull that was closest. One of the biggest hulls he has seen with his own eyes. Large, but sleek and elegant. Sharp in every curve but smooth in the general design. Simply beautiful. His eyes were slowly investigating every detail of the hull... The four Warp nacelles... The pylons... The long engineering section... The elongated saucer section... And finally they rested at the ship's designation... ~ NCC 91367... USS Dennison...~ Galway took a seat and was sitting there for quite some time, overlooking the beautiful ship he is going to serve on. And when he felt that it was the time to go, he did not know how much time has already passed. He silently started walking towards one of the turbolift shafts he had seen earlier. He approached and pressed a button. The turbolift doors opened soon afterwards. He entered. "Level at which Airlock 3 is located." The turbolift started moving and came to a halt several seconds later as it arrived at it's destination. Galway walked out. That level was quite different. Only few small viewports were provided, the corridors weren't so nice... It seemed more like a maintenance area. He approached a terminal in the wall and pressed one of the buttons. "Computer, how can I get to Airlock 3... and what is the time?" [You can observe the cut out level plan currently displayed at this terminal's monitor...] Indeed, a map with a route plotted appeared. [... and the time is 15:50.] Galway examined the map for several more minutes. "Thank you." [You are welcome.] The map disappeared and he slowly walked towards the designated area, passing several junction, intersections and storage areas. He finally reached what looked like a major bulkhead door in the wall. Two officers in yellow uniforms were present. Apparently, one was guarding the door while the other one seemed like waiting for someone. Galway approached. "Ensign William Galway?" The uneasy non-commissioned officer asked. "That is correct." "Ah. Splendid - we have been awaiting you, sir. My name is Kozlevsky and, as you can see I am a non-commissioned officer in the OPS division. Follow me, please." The officer approached the door and nodded to the other officer, who in turn pressed few buttons at the computer terminal integrated into the wall aside the door. With a slight hiss the heavy doors opened and Kozlevsky walked in. Galway regretted only that he had so little time to see the station's interiors. ~ Some other time, then... ~ He took one last look around and followed Kozlevsky into the short airlock corridor as the door closed behind him. (USS Dennison - Ens. (jg) William Galway - 16:05) "Welcome to USS Dennison, Sir..." "Your luggage has been delivered to your quarters few minutes ago. You will have the opportunity to refresh yourself and visit the Captain. Don't forget your orders that have been delivered with your bag. I will now assist you to your quarters." Said the OPS officer while they both left the airlock and entered a nearby turbolift. "Deck two." "So, how are the preparations for launch going?" "Everything is according to schedule, sir. Status reports from all divisions are already awaiting your inspection." The turbolift stopped and they both walked into a corridor. (USS Dennison - Deck 2, senior officer quarters - Ens. (jg) William Galway - 16:10) "Your quarters are just around that corner." They walked ten more meters and Kozlevsky stopped in front of a door. "This is it, Sir." "Thanks." Galway approached the doors and pressed a button. "Ensign Galway, open." The doors opened. "Uhmm, sir?" "Yes?" Galway turned back towards the OPS officer. "Welcome to USS Dennison, Sir." "Thank you." A smile appeared on Galway's face. "You can attend to your duties." "Aye, Sir." Kozlevsky came to attention briefly and walked away. Galway took a deep breath and walked into his new... home. (USS Dennison - Deck 2, Ensign Galway's quarters - Ens. (jg) William Galway - 16:15) Galway looked around the room. It was definitely larger than that in Academy. And he didn't has to share with another crewmember. The room was spacious and well designed. Everything was new and clean: a bed, a small table and a few chairs, a desk with a computer terminal and a familiar PADD on it. The wardrobe, bookshelf and cabinet were integrated into the walls. It was more that enough. Galway noticed his bag aside the bed. He walked towards it and opened it. ~ The security people didn't do much mess... ~ He took out a small picture frame. It was about 15 centimetres in width and 20 centimetres in height. It had some nice, narrow edges crafted out of polished aluminium. He pressed a button at the frame's back at put it at the small night cabinet aside the bed. After a few seconds the frame displayed a nice, detailed image of a planet with blue surface covered with patches of green. The Earth. Galway looked at the image displayed for several minutes. Finally he made a deep breath and started taking his uniform off. He hoped that a shower will chase away the results of the not so good sleep he had during the travel to the station. (USS Dennison - Main Bridge - Ens. (jg) William Galway - 17:00) Galway approached the Captain's Ready Room's doors with his orders in his hand. He pressed the chime. =/\= Come in. =/\= A female voice replied. Galway stepped into the office. It was designed much like in the other ship classes - a heavy accent was put on relaxing elements: a bed, toned down colours, smooth curves, even the fish tank was there. William approached the desk, behind which the Captain was seated. He came to attention. "Ma'am, Ensign Galway reporting for duty, ma'am." This was not what he had expected when he woke up this morning. With his order PADD in hand and a very small ruk-sack over his shoulder, he stepped up to the chief of the deck. "Lieutenant Commander Capstain, special aide to Admiral Gr'iann." He handed over his PADD, "Requesting to come aboard." The Chief frowned and looked at the PADD, then consulted one of his own. "I'm sorry Chief, you're not on our approved list." He looked back up and his hand slid to his phaser. "Tough." Was Capstain's response as he eyed the man's hand with disdain. "I was a special transfer, so get on the horn and confirm it." The Chief apparently didn’t like his tone much, because the phaser was out an instant later. "You will come with me to Security, Sir." Was his curt reply. "I don't care if I'm not on your list." The betazoid said in a deadly-dangerous voice. "Nor do I care to know what you're doing with that phaser. You will call Admiral Gr'iann now to authenticate me, or I swear to God above you'll send the rest of your days scrubbing Starbase hulls." The Chief, without taking his eyes from the Commander, tapped his badge. "Chief Dooku to Admiral Gr'iann. Sir, I have an officer here not on my roster who insists he was sent at your command. Sir, I have an officer here not on my roster who insists he was sent at your command. Lieutenant Commander Reece Capstain.=^= There was a little edge to the chief's voice but Gr'iann decided to put that down to nerves. It had been a long day. However, he was thnakful for Robert. If there was one thing that he was certain of, once Robert LoDona said he was going to do something, it happened almost instantly. Which, really, was about what it took. Gr'iann tapped his comm badge. "Well that took long enough," he said joking to himself. By Robert's standard's, this was almost late. Perhaps there was a hang up somewhere. "Please mmake surre he gets to sickbay. I will take carre of himm frromm therre." =^=Aye, sir.=^= The reply of the transporter chief seemed a little less than enthusiastic, but Gr'iann put it out of his mind. Then he tapped his comm badge again. "Gr'iann to Sasine. Lt. Commmanderr, I need to see you in sickbay." (reply Sasine) "Gr'iann to Captain Davis, I just want to inforrmm you that ourr guest has arrrived, and I plan to intrroduce himm to Lt. Commmanderr Sasine immmediately." He smiled a big fangy smile. There was just something about this CO that he found endearing. He couldn't figure out what it was, perhaps it was her vulnerability. Perhaps it was the way she's been handling her situation without going crazy. She was tougher than she seemed. "That was awefully fast," she said, "you Admirals don't mess around do you?" Unlike most Caitians, Gr'iann not only understood, but enjoyed humor. "Well, once we diecide sommething needs to be done, we mmove heaven and earrth to mmake it happen. It just takes us a while to mmake those decisions." The doors to sickay opened again and a man entered that Gr'iann did not recognize. He had a strange look to him, like he knew something he didn't really want to know, and would be happy to unload his burden on someone else. Gr'iann had seen the look before on other telepaths. The man came up to them and stopped short. "Lieutenant Commander Riis Capstain, reporting for special duty as ordered, Admiral." "Lt. Commanderr, welcomme," Gr'iann extended his hand in the Caitian manner, extending his claws. "I amm glad you could mmake such quick timme underr such shorrt notice." (replu Capstain) "Captain Madison Davis," she said, holding out her hand for a firm hand shake. "Glad to have you onboard. I believe the Admiral has most of your duty details," she said, glancing towards Gr'iann and letting him have the floor. (reply Capstain) Gr'iann handed Capstain the padd he had produced on all of the information he'd gathered on Sasine, most of it being anecdotal, as he had little record to go from. "This should have mmost of the perrtinent details. Please, comme into mmy office." He led the Betazoid and the Captain into his office and waited for the door to close. "Please sit. As you can see, Lt. Commanderr Sasine, apparently, has been sufferring frromm a lack of shielding since birrth. I'm ammazed that he is still sane. He reporrts that he spent his early years in the carre of a Betazed hospital, and that helped strengthen his resolve, but I fear that noting can trruely prreparre you fro the constant onslaught of the thoughts of otherrs, and eventually you will wear down." I will take carre of himm frromm therre." "Aye, sir." The Chief said before the line was cut. Riis had already put the PADD back into a pocket of his uniform and he stood cross armed, silent and waiting. The Chief turned his head and made eye contact with the security guard stationed in the room. He jerked his head, then turned around and came to attention. "Permission to come aboard, granted, Sir." He said, with only a hint of displeasure. Emotion poured off of him, Riis had to dampen his empathic ability until he'd passed by. One more enemy, give or take. It was a long standing tradition. They threaded their way through the ship silently; the crewman was no more willing to start a conversation then Riis was. But the time wasn't idle, Riis opened his shields to their standard level and took in all the stray thoughts from the crew as he could stand, there was a lot of paranoia around him... preparations for combat. Some resentment, anger, excitement. And uncertainty, quite a lot of it, even more so then he would expect from a military vessel. Not surprising, the quick read he'd gotten of the information the Admiral had sent over said a good portion of this crew was from a different universe entirely. Uncertainty was probably something he'd have to get used to. No matter, he had a specific job to fulfill. The crewman stopped when they'd reached the sickbay. Riis nodded sharply and said, "Dismissed." "Sir." Was the only response before he turned back around to return to his duty station. Riis stepped inside the sickbay and looked around. It was state-of-the-art; Riis had worked in one much like it for project blue, though he was by no means a doctor. His usual department was Security/Tactical; he'd served as the Chief of Security on the Warshrike before being tagged for a special project in telepathic defense. It didn't take much to spot the cat-like creature he'd been tasked to, the admiral's bars weren't even necessary, though they confirmed the Fleet Second Officer's identity without question. He stepped up and came to attention before the Admiral, "Lieutenant Commander Riis Capstain, reporting for special duty as ordered, Admiral." Riis took the claw and returned the greeting in the best way he could, "My pleasure, Admiral." He said before turning his head to a woman with four pips. Irritation was pouring out of her, and he quirked an eyebrow slightly as she stuck out a hand. "Captain Madison Davis, Glad to have you onboard. I believe the Admiral has most of your duty details," "Details, yes. My orders from LoDona are quite clear." He pulled out his PADD and handed it to the Admiral. Madison was more or less there to hear the details so she was aprised on what was going to happen. However she was also still waiting for Sasine, which he had yet to report in. Glancing at the chronometer, she decided that maybe he was in the middle of something he was just trying to tear himself away from, and that she could give him an extra minute or two. "I mmust warrn you," Gr'iann continued, "that Mmrr. Sasine is mmost rreluctant to any of this. He is sincerre in his belief that he can handle it. I do not sharre his enthusiasm. Sighing, she thought, ~Alright, minute up!~ Growing annoyed with her impatience, she said, "Please excuse me for one moment Doctor, Lietenant," nodding her head to both before stepping out of the CMO's office. Tapping her commbadge, she said, "Davis to Sasine, you're needed in sickbay immediatly." She obviously didn't want to make it a huge deal over communications, but she didn't have the tolerance for people who showed up late for meetings....especially when it concerned the individual who was late. <> Knowing Sasine knew this about her, she started to wonder just why he wasn't there yet. Remembering the last time this happened, she really hoped the cycle was not going to repeat itself. "I have a feeling you would be anyway," Gr'iann said, his tail curling. Then he nodded. "Please do." "If he's gone this long and not sought training, he's likely to be highly stubborn about it now. My orders from LoDona are fairly strong, I succeed or he's out of the fleet. Odds are this is going to provide problems with other crew, especially anyone that's been talking him through all this. Do you have any specific limits you would like set on how I respond to outside influences?" Gr'iann took a deep breath before answering. He knew how LoDona trained his people. They didn't usually take and crap and they knew their own limitations. He had to trust Robert on this one. "You arre to follow yourr orrderrs, Lt. Commmanderr. After finally hearing Sasine's voice, she hoped he would be there, and soon. Madison then went to wait right inside the main sickbay doors. Tapping her foot, she didn't have the time to be playing these games. She noticed both Capstain and Gr'iann throwing the occasional glance her way, probably wondering what she was doing just standing there. But she figured they'd find out one way or the other. As she waited a few minutes more, she immediatly watched as both Sasine and Allel entered the room. But she blocked the way for both, standing in front of them not letting either past her. Looking at John, she said, "Commander, I want you to head to the Doctor's office....now." She watched John's face, a mixed expression she thought. One of wonderment and fear...perhaps anxiety for what was to come that he wasn't yet aware of. <> Watching him go on, she then turned towards Trace. "I'm sorry Counselor but this issue is being worked out separate through higher command. I'm afraid I cannot let you interfere with this process." <> Knowing that would make Allel upset, Madison didn't care one way or the other. She had a ship to run and she damn well wasnt' going to get things done by catering to the wants of her crew. "This is not a counselling issue here, this is a training issue, and one that I among with high command feel it would be best if he received it from someone he wasn't particularly close with. Now...it's not anything against you or your abilities, but this is being dealt with separatly. Do I make myself clear?" <> Watching Trace turn around and storm off, Madison folded her arms across her chest, then turned back around and headed towards the CMO's office once more. "Captain, with all respect, I've got my orders from the fleet admiral. If anyone interferes, I have the authority to order them off." Raising an eyebrow and folding her arms across her chest, she appreciated his bluntness and wanting to get his job done efficiently, however he seemed like he had an attitude complex. ~Reminds me of myself,~ she thought. Oh, she would have words with him later all right. "As for your feelings reguarding the Relentless.....I can't tell you how to feel or how to act on them. How about a party or something?" He said, somewhat hopefully. Madison took a moment to think about this. She knew he was right, that the crew needed more interaction with each other than just being thrown onto a ship and performing their duties. That was what they were there for, but she knew things would work more smoothly if at least they got to know each other. "That's not a bad idea," she said. "However it will have to wait until we leave space dock for now. In the meantime..." she stated, going back to captain mode, "I'll take those status reports whenever they're finished." About to leave his office, she then remembered one other thing. Turning back, she said, "Also, we have a new officer coming aboard the ship. His name is William Galway and he will be our chief of ops. I'm going to revert him to you if he has any questions about anything as you two will probably be working closely together given the department. He's fresh out of the academy, so you may need to help show him the ropes around here as well." With Maines' acknowledgment, Madison turned once more, then left his office in pursuit of her own. Madison looked up from the status report she was on, wondering who could be on the other side of the door. She then realized it was probably her newest member of the crew, as he had yet to report in to her. "Come in," she called, and saw that she was right as he walked into her ready room, and ended up at stick straight attention. "Ma'am, Ensign Galway reporting for duty, ma'am." Looking over the Ensign, she was quiet for a moment before saying, "At ease." Standing up, she asked, "Your orders?" Watching him as he handed her a PADD, she scrolled through it and saw that his instructor and LoDona had signed him off on joining the Dennison's crew. Placing the PADD on her desk, she then handed him a different PADD, and said, "Here are your orders as well as an update on what's been happening around the ship. He didn't know many captains before but it was an absolutely expectable behaviour when one considers the responsibility and trust the Commanding Officer was about to put on the Ensign's shoulders. "At ease." She commanded finally and standing up, she asked, "Your orders?" Galway let himself to relax a bit more handing the PADD over to the Captain but he was cautious since the CO stood up. (Reply: Any, none) (Posted by: Stacey) =========================================================================== Mission: A New Beginning Day 2 Stardate: 2407.01.18 (USS Dennison - OPS office - Ens. (jg) William Galway - 23:04) Galway was sitting behind the desk at the OPS office. The whole ship was larger than what he could imagine just a few days ago, and the OPS office was bigger than those aboard regular vessels, of sizes comparable to those of Galaxy class generation or even the Sovereign class itself, as well. Apparently this ship's interior however was designed with less comfort in mind. Galway had yet a great many things to see on-board the USS Dennison. Perhaps the crude military feel was just a sign of fresh fabrication... Still the board-room was big enough, about half the size of a Sovereign class observation lounge, to house place for several secondary LCARS consoles integrated into walls, and plenty of room for additional seats, now stowed away hidden in the wall compartments immediately below the panels. All this additional equipment would be used in case of emergency. A ship of this size and complexity, in times of crisis, would demand much attention from the OPS crew to achieve peek performance. The desk, Galway was sitting behind, was triangle shaped, with two sides heavily elongated where other people could seat when a usual conference with other OPS personnel would be necessary. There was no one but Galway in the room. It was silent. And darker. This room, and the parts of the ship Galway had already seen, including the Main Bridge, were kept in bright and sharp tones. Perhaps to enhance visibility at low-light conditions. Lowering the light to 65% helped Galway to concentrate on the computer terminal in front of him, integrated into the solid desk. There weren't much decorations around. In fact, there were none. Not much a surprise in that kind of office. The only colourful element in the whole scene was the large monitor mounted at some angle, high on one of the walls, currently displaying the ship's detailed animated schematics. The display could be reprogrammed to double the information shown by any station on-board, and with proper clearance, even the Main Bridge viewscreen, if the need would arise. A single beep came out of Galway's terminal indicating a task finished. Computer calculated the shifts diagram for all the OPS personnel aboard with Galway's proposed parameters, and displayed its graphical representation. Currently there were few people to spare, the shortages of hands were clearly visible at all departments. It was hard to set up a time table with which Galway's people took care of all their responsibilities, had some time to rest, and were available for replacement if the need arises. It was almost an hour since William started working on the shifts. He already examined, and learned, the shifts for other divisions. It seemed all department heads were facing similar problems. Still that last diagram seemed alright. Although single crew members had a little more work to focus on while those with families, and especially children, had some more time that they could spent with their relatives - the shifts layout seemed pretty well balanced. There were still holodeck privileges to sort out, and Dennison had plenty of them, but the worst part was done. Galway already scanned through all departments' status reports some time ago. All major systems were ready for ship's departure; however, several smaller but new and highly advanced subsystems were being tested and few were yet to be tuned up. With project of that magnitude it was no wonder that there were some small delays - after all USS Dennison was to be the first Indefatigable class vessel in the fleet. William wondered how much time it took just to instruct the Geneva's engineering people on Indefatigable operations. No match for the Meredith class, of course... ~... but still a major fist in Doenitz eye.~ Galway smiled to himself. However the smile was quickly gone when he closed his eyes. The thoughts were rushing through his head. The noise. The pain. The suffering... The images of Tellar and Andoria being overrun by Doenitz forces... The killing... The bloodshed... Billions of lives lost... ~ What for...?~ Galway opened his eyes and rubbed his forehead with his hand while gently putting the other hand on the phaser at his side. A feel too comforting... And a clear sign of the war that was going on out there. He took a deep breath and focused back on the terminal before him. It was late but there was still work to be done. He pressed a sequence of buttons and the shifts layout was sent to Commander Sasine for approval. Then Galway opened the ship's roster file again. Now as the time to read through the full bios of the bridge crew so he could finally take a tour of the ship and personally meet all the remaining senior staff. As usual it was comprised of people with a great variety of skills and abilities, but also different ambitions and characters. While the ship's Chief Counsellor was responsible for them to get along with each other, it was Galway's task to make their cooperation as efficient as possible. With all the pre-launch matters at hand, the presence of an Admiral aboard, the Chief Medical Officer Gr'iann, or Commander Capstain with his sudden visit, somehow connected with recent incidents with the First Officer were, not to say problems, special cases to which Galway was to put even more attention. Although the presence of an Admiral was somehow normal, when one considered the scope of that project, still several questions hopped into one's mind. Did the 52nd's Command felt there was such a possibility of some kind of failure that they had to sent such a high ranking officer here? The difficulties on the FO position were not welcome either, especially just before the launch. And FO's medical records were beyond Galway's clearance, so he could not estimate if is was at all serious. Galway sit back in his comfortable chair and looked into one of the room's darker corners. He sighed. ~At least... it won't be boring.~ He smiled again. (jg) William Galway - 04:37) A flower. A nice, harmless flower. A bit of white. A bit of yellow. A bit of green. A nice, small, harmless flower... living in the field of endless, smooth, green grass... .. suddenly crushed to the very ground by a black military boot. Boot of a faceless Federation marine... .. William woke up and sat on his bed. There was darkness all around. Darkness that soothed his mind. He took a deep breath and rubbed his forehead. It was that dream again. It wasn't a nightmare. It was not horrific or anything of that sort. It was just... disturbing. ~Will have to talk about it with the counsellor... When I find the time.~ "Computer, what is the time." [It is 04:40 ship time.] He worked till late last night but it was pointless to try to get back to sleep now. William knew that. It happened before... The ship's departure was scheduled for 8:00, and while it wasn't his shift but one of his assistants, it was, of course, common sense and well understood responsibility for the division head to oversee such event, regardless of the time it occurred. Yet, there was plenty of time. Galway took another deep breath and put his bare feet onto the floor. It was an interesting sensation. The Starfleet choice of materials was causing the floor not to be felt cold. Galway hadn't had the chance to notice that before. "Computer, lights." The internal environment control launched the room's lighting. It already remembered Galway's setting it to 70% earlier. William got up and stretched his back and neck. This was to be a long day. He took another look around the room and directed his steps into the bathroom, where lights were turned on the moment he stepped in. He approached the sink and looked into the mirror. Fortunately, his face didn't look like he was sleepy or tired. That was a good thing. He didn't felt like that either. That was even better. William looked into his own eyes in the reflection. It was probably the excitement about the new place - the ship, the mission, and the new life as a Starfleet officer... Well, whatever it was that kept him conscious it was probably the same thing that was causing the strange dreams. At least Galway was hoping so. That way he was making himself believe that all those will go away once he get accustomed to the ship. Galway turned away from the mirror and got a long, cold shower. (USS Dennison - Deck 7, outside the Mess Hall - Ens. (jg) William Galway - 05:20) The doors opened and Galway, with a PADD in his hand, stepped out of the turbolift. It brought him to a large corridor intersection. Constructed as a high hall, with several benches and patches of green here and there, just a few steps out of the Mess Hall, it all seemed a smart ship design element, with proper human traffic handling as a goal. Galway took himself a few minutes to look around. There were several corridors branching off in a star-like fashion. The four turbolift shafts in the main hub Galway was standing in, would further enhance the traffic patterns during the busy hours before and just after each of the three 8-hour shifts. He also noted that this area, unlike the more official-oriented parts of the ship, like the Main Bridge or senior staff offices, was finished with materials much more pleasant to the eye. The colours were not so bright, and warmer tones were used. There were no people around however. Which was not surprising as most of the people on duty were busy tuning up Dennison's various sub-systems and taking instruction courses on handling many of the ships innovative technological solutions. There was still a large amount of problems to be solved or tests to be run in flight, after Denison's launch. All the rest were catching the last opportunity to tour and have some fun at Starbase Geneva - Galway had to personally sign two hundreds or so permissions for absence during that last night. People should have started to pour back in any time then. And of course the crew complement was far of being full 1400 staff members. New people were arriving all the time. Galway took a few steps to the nearby larger doors. They opened with a well known hiss and William stepped into the Mess Hall. It was a very spacious room designed to house all crew members from one shift at the same time. Although the room's walls were far apart - the ceiling, slightly higher than in most of the other rooms, still looked like being low in comparison to the overall size of the Mess Hall. That, incidentally, with the Mess's unique interior design, created a fraction of the feeling of privacy and peace. One of the walls was used up for the kitchen front: mostly the food serving area, with a small, apparently now closed, bar-like establishment at the very far corner of the room. There were tables everywhere. Small and round, with three chairs each. Also the spaces between individual tables were quite enough to permit an unobstructed movement throughout the room. There were some plants in several places and in one of the corners, a small fountain could be observed. There were few people around - all in two-person groups at several tables under one of the walls. The walls themselves, ceiling and floor were covered with dark materials and lights were not so bright as in the other parts of the ship - an element which was aimed at furthering the feeling of relaxations. Something that will obviously be needed on a warship, in times of war... Galway walked to the food serving counter. The kitchen area was separated, possibly not to show the visitors that someone IS working for their relax, hence little of it was visible. Only a young girl in a smock and a science uniform was sitting there, reading a book. "Uhmm... hello." William smiled. "Oh. Just a second I'll finish the sentence... OK!" The girl jumped to her feet and walked towards Galway with a wide grin. "What can I do for you, boy?" "Must be an interesting reading...?" He tried to keep up the conversation. "Oh, you know - the kind of stupid things all the young girls read... I bet you brought some of equally interesting guy-type reading on that PADD you are holding too." "Unfortunately, only reports, up to date crew rosters and other, equally fascinating data." "Oh. Haven't seen you around before - engineering or OPS is your sphere of expertise?" She asked jokingly. Galway kept smiling, he was a little bit surprised with the girl's apparent friendliness. He saw that only now the girl noticed the markings on his collar. "Oh my God! I am so sorry... Sir! The senior officers are not a usual sight here - especially now, before the launch, and most of them... uhmm... most of You just use the replicators for most of the time anyway..." She started explaining herself. Galway noticed that she was a Chief Petty Officer. "Please..." He kept smiling. "... let's get over with the formalities. I believe this is the one single place on the whole ship, one could feel a little bit more..." Galway hesitated, thinking about the proper word. After all he was the head of the OPS department. He could be friendly too, but he had to care about the respect. "Easy...?" The girl suggested. "Yes... one could feel a little bit more easy in. After all, I don't want to mess with someone who prepares my food, do I?" They both laughed out loud. Galway extended his arm. "I'm William Galway. Nice to meet you." They shook hands. "I'm Jean Turling..." She hesitated. "...THE William Galway? The new Chief OPS?" Jean asked with a faked fear on her face. "Yes, if there was no other Chief OPS here in the last twelve hours, then it must be me. So they say at least." He said, again with a wide grin. "Oh my God! I'm in so much trouble! If you won't like the stuff I will serve you, you can have me working three shifts in a row!" "In fact, we could use more people..." They exchanged looks and laughed out loud again. "So, mr. Galway, what will that be for you? A dinner or the breakfast?" "Well, I was hoping for a breakfast..." "A breakfast then. Why so early?" "Lots of things on my head, I guess." He said pointing at the PADD in his hand. "You know, we are scheduled for launching and everything has to be checked and double checked and operational in 110%..." "Yeah..." "Besides I am new around here, so I have to learn a lot of things." "Like we all are." She said looking around the empty room. "Most of the people do not know each other at all. That several couples you can see were transferred here together. That's all I know. The families have higher privileges on replicators in their quarters, so I guess they won't show up here pretty often. And, of course, there are all those people that went to site-see the Geneva..." "Tell me about it..." "Yeah, and I just don't understand what people see in those Truidin class Starbases. OK - they are huge and there are lots of people there. That's for sure." "You must be from Earth, aren't you?" "Yes... How did you know that?" Galway smiled a bit. "Magic." "Oh no! You are not going to get away so easily..." Just as she was saying this a couple of people entered the Mess Hall. "... Hmm I guess it's your lucky day." "Probably some people from the second shift." "Yeah, I guess so. Hopefully not a beginning of the rush hour yet. The guys in the back probably started making some breakfast stuff already, though. Let's see..." She pressed some buttons at the terminal mounted behind the counter. "Yup. I can organise you a toast and an egg. I hope the senior cook spares us the delicacies for after the launch... What do you say?" She said with a charming smile. "I'll be delighted." "Oh goodies, I won't see the triple shift today...! Listen, you seem like an OK guy. Would you mind if we meet and talk some more when we both are off duty?" "Absolutely not." "Great, you will know how to catch me?" "I'm the Chief OPS, remember?" Galway said with faked seriousness. "Yeah... And that brings us to why have you come here in the first place? You could read all that stuff of yours in your quarters with all the peace and silence you would need?" She asked with authentic curiosity. "Well, you know - I like to keep eye on evil cooks. They are a true enemy of the Federation, and the safety of Starfleet personnel in particular." William replied with even bigger grin. The people that just came into the Mess Hall started queueing up behind Galway. "Oh. Right. Damn. Be right back." She said already running to the kitchen through an open door few meters away. Galway turned around to look at the tables. He chose one particular, at the back of the Hall, near one of the walls. Jean ran out of the kitchen holding a plate full of food. "Well you are lucky, this is all I've found..." Galway turned back to Jean. The same moment a number of cooks walked out bringing several large containers which they put into large holes in the counter. There were a huge mass of eggs prepared in different forms and a number of other courses. Other cooks started bringing some other additions, with dishes and cutlery as well. Jean smiled. "Well you may be lucky, but I didn't say I am." She pointed at the cooks that brought the food. "... They have found more." They both laughed again and Jean pushed a liquid-filled cup over the counter. "I hope you like tea." "Definitely...! How did you know?" "Magic." She smiled. "Right." William smiled back. "See You!" She threw already running off to serve the other visitors. Galway took the cup and the plate and walked to the table he had chosen earlier. He put the food on it, as well as his PADD and took a seat. He had chosen to sit in a way that he could observe the whole Mess Hall. This way he could see how those few people behave and act. See the relations between them. How they address each other. These were interesting as it was a new crew and it would eventually prove valuable to observe how people are responding to the new surroundings. Galway took a sip of the tea. It was delicious. Mild and not very hot. It must have been a copy of some Earth grown tea, as it reminded him greatly of the one he loved drinking at the Academy so much. He opened two small packets of sugar he got with the tea, and poured it into the cup. He took a fork and tried the eggs. They were quite good too. He grabbed the PADD, which was still displaying the last updates to the ship's crew roster and he started eating. The new operations officer was late, 32 minutes late, he still hadn't taken posession of his station. This meant that various members of different departments had to cut into their own duty schedules to man his. Jewort couldn't help but wonder if he couldn't find his way to the bridge, afterall he had valuable things to do in his own department. ~Damn kids these days. What the hell is wrong with them.~ "Computer, where in the name of all that is holy, is Ensign Galway?" asked Jewort not hiding his annoyance. He waited for the response while ignoring the snickers eminating from the other bridge crew around him. [Ensign Galway is in the mess hall.] ~So he's awake. Doesn't he realise how important this position is? He has one of the most important prelauch areas on the ship, and for some reason I'm manning it. He should be making sure all the departments are up and running properly. There isn't a ship with a configuration like this in the fleet... and I should know.~ For a few minutes Jewort did nothing but stew, feeling his Rigelian blood heat, a state that would be common to most of his race. Finally, he could take it no more and tapped his comm badge. Modulating his voice to be both sarcastic and syrupy he stated, "Ensign Galway, it would be very pleasant if you could tear yourself away from your late breakfast and find your way to the bridge someday to take control of your post, so other people don't have to keep covering for you. I've activated the corridor lights for you, in case you don't know the way. Just follow the blue lights lit along the side."
