Compilers Notes: Geneva Compile 8 – Street Date April 23, 2005. THANK YOU to everyone who has read this section and made steps to fix things before they get to me. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. It has resulted in me being able to shave about an hour off the total compile time. You guys and gals are great! Fixed timestamp errors… very few errors. Try not to put a post at the exact same time as another one if you can help it. Only minor adjustments were necessary. Fixed spelling errors… not too bad. Thanks for being more careful, I greatly appreciate it. Fixed formatting errors… No real problems, although contrary to what your 4th grade teacher taught you, it is no longer necessary to indent every paragraph. Most books and other printed matter use line spacing to denote paragraphing now. I usually just remove your indenting anyway to make all the posts look more uniform so it might be easier on you, and me, if you don’t indent paragraphs. Changed weird fonts and funky coloured fonts back to regular fonts that the website posting programme will actually take. This is a real pain folks. Please think of the compiler when you use funny fonts and colours. They’re a pain to switch back. 29 pages of compile in total with 36 posts in total. Total compile time: 1 hrs 59 minutes. "Ummm... something slow would probably be a good idea, something I'll be able to keep up with," "Then a slow waltz, sir" Kass replied as she raised her hands for him to join her. "Incidentally, you don't have to call me 'Sir' or by rank when we're off duty. Paul will do. Especially after I make a fool of myself in front of you," said Paul with a grin. "Ok,,, si,, Paul" she replied to him, but, it sounded funny when she called him 'Paul'. But, he had given her the permission to do so when not on duty and they were not currently, but, technically they were always were on duty. She did not bring that point up to him as he stepped on her toes as he would do a few times more. She just smiled and kept up the dance, actually by the time they had finished she was having so much fun dancing with him. She wished that the fun she was having could go on forever, but, she knew that it couldn't. (posted by Frank Mission: Go Forth, Shadowy Future, Day 1 Stardate: 2407.01.01 (Starbase Geneva -- Little Cardassia -- ACSO Iss'rad Ghakin and SPC Deirdra Eistal, 0800) Deirdra walked into the restaurant. What she really needed before she headed off to her shift was a good cup of coffee. Today was unusual in that her duty shift didn't start until ten o'clock. There were some interesting duty shifts happening so that everyone was going to have a chance to work with their department heads. She walked into the replomat and got a coffee, looking around she saw that all the tables were taken. She spied this one woman at the corner and went over to where she was sitting. "Hi, I'm Deirdra, I'm sorry to bother you, but all the other tables are taken. may I sit here?" Iss'rad sat sipping her coffee when Deirdra approached the table. "Hi, I'm Deirdra, I'm sorry to bother you, but all the other tables are taken. may I sit here?" she asked. Iss'rad nodded. "Sure, go ahead. It's busy today." Deirdra smiled and sat down. "Hi, I'm Deirdra Eistal, I'm one of the doctors in Sickbay!" She said in a friendly tone introducing herself. "Nice to meet you, I'm Iss'rad Ghakin, assistant chief of science". Iss'rad said as she sat back, wrapping her hands around her cup. She'd not had a chance to meet many people on the station yet so this was a welcome change. "Ah! Excellent! Nice to meet you as well!" Deirdra said as she took a sip of the coffee in front of her. "When did you arrive?" "Ah, yes, I arrived a couple days ago." Deirdra said, "Still trying to get settled, it's difficult with three teenagers in the house." Deirdra sighed. "Three teenagers? Better you than me." She laughed, she tried to remember those days and was glad she couldn't. "How do you do it?" Deirdra laughed. "They are a handful, I only hope that this time they stay out of trouble!" The two women chatted on for a little longer when all of a sudden, all chaos broke loose in Little Cardassia. Iss'rad glanced out the window "What's that?" pointing to what had been empty space. "Where did that come from?" Deirdra spun around and caught the tail end of a planet just sort of materialising into space. "Gentle Redeemer!" She said as she saw the planet. "I have no idea...." She said quietly. The reactions of the other replomat occupants were quite drastic. Some were shrieking hysterically, and others were covering their eyes, pretending that it had not indeed happened. Deirdra took a deep breath as this barrage of hysteria assaulted her senses. Iss'rad watched the planet briefly then turned to look at the occupants of Little Cardassia. "I have a feeling that things just ceased to be dull and 'normal'." She wasn't sure if this was a good thing or bad thing but it sure beat the 'norm'. Deirdra opened her eyes. "This is going to be quite the day." She was about to say something else, when the Captain's voice came ringing over the comm system saying that there was to be a senior staff meeting in twenty minutes. Deirdra looked at her coffee-table partner and said, "I think I should go check in with sickbay before the meeting -- see you there?" Iss'rad nodded "I'll be there." And with that the pair got up and exited the room. (Posted by KJ and Kat) (Starbase Geneva - Counselor's Office - Counselor Ensign Kassia Marta - 0805) Kass had arrived to her office, at least she had thought it was until she arrived, to find Ensign Brian Rogers sitting behind the desk, her desk. She had forgotten about him since she had not been able to talk to him after Lt. Commander Mackenzie intervened. "Well good morning Ensign ,, Rogers wasn't it?" Kass said as she walked in and sat down in front of the desk. (posted by Frank) (Starbase Geneva, Counsellor's Office, COUNS Ensign (JG) Brian Rogers, 0807) Brian was busily researching the Starfleet database on the CSO's species. It was a long file, but Brian was determined to read it all. Somebody walked in. "Well good morning Ensign, Rogers wasn't it?" She asked. Brian stood up and shook her hand. "Uh....yes, sir." Brian said. She was a half a rank higher than him. "I'm sorry, I didn't check your name." (reply Marta) "I understand. Nice to meet you." Brian said. "I was wandering what you could tell me about the Chief Science Officer. I was just reading up on his species." (Posted by Kevin Schram) (Starbase Geneva - Counselor's Office - Counselor Ensign Kassia Marta - 0815) Opal watched as the Ensign stood up and shook her hand as she extended it. "Uh....yes, sir." Brian said. "I'm sorry, I didn't check your name." "Ensign Kassia Marta" She replied to his statement. "I am sorry I did not get to talk with you more last night." "I understand. Nice to meet you." Brian said. "I was wandering what you could tell me about the Chief Science Officer. I was just reading up on his species." "Well, for one thing They tend to be willowy and contemplative. They evolved into humanoid form from an herbivorous ancestry that dominated the majority of their world for thousands of years. As a whole and individuals, they abhor violence and confrontations, unlike their omnivorous and carnivorous counterparts on other worlds. Their dedication to peaceful ways has often been an example of what the Federation is aiming to achieve, and because of this the Federation Council has elected members of this race to the position of President on more than one occasion." She replied to him. "Anything else I can help you with?" Kass said "oh and how did it go with Lt. Commander Mackenzie last night?" (Rogers) "Oh I had not known that you were injured last night, no one told me. Are you feeling better this morning?" Kass asked (Rogers) "Well yes I guess you would be if you are here." Kass acknowledged a little embarrassed she asked the obvious. "Well, to bring you up to what I had started" Kass started, "which was crew evaluations. I believe that from your connection with Lt. Commander Mackenzie last night, I will conduct her eval. But, we need to complete them all in a relatively short time if we can." (Rogers) "Well, I think that it could be construed that you would have a conflict of interest if you evaluated her. That is why I decided to do the eval myself. We need to keep this office above suspicion. Are you in agreement with me?" Kass asked (Rogers) "Good, as I want us to be of like minds since we will be working side by side." Kass sighed slightly hoping that they could work together. Two counselors normally don't work together very well on the same station or ship. (Rogers) "Ok now that is out of the way, would you like to tell me a little about yourself?" Kass asked. (posted by Frank) (Starbase Geneva, Counsellor's Office, COUNS Ensign (JG) Brian Rogers, 0817) "Oh and how did it go with Lt. Commander Mackenzie last night?" Ensign Marta asked. ~Whoa, how did she know that? Probably saw us, but how many others know about that?~ "It went, good, I guess you could say. I was called to an emergency subspace message and I was hurt on the way back." Brian explained. "Oh I had not known that you were injured last night, no one told me. Are you feeling better this morning?" She asked. ~At least that didn't go about the station~ Brian thought. "I'm feeling better." Brian explained. "Well yes I guess you would be if you are here." She said. "Well, to bring you up to what I had started, which was crew evaluations. I believe that from your connection with Lt. Commander Mackenzie last night, I will conduct her eval. But, we need to complete them all in a relatively short time if we can." Brian nodded. "Why would my relationship with her effect my evaluation of her?" But has soon he said that he knew the answer. "Well, I think that it could be construed that you would have a conflict of interest if you evaluated her. That is why I decided to do the eval myself. We need to keep this office above suspicion. Are you in agreement with me?" She asked. "Of course, counsellor." Brian said in agreement. "Good, as I want us to be of like minds since we will be working side by side," she said "Yes. You can evaluate Lt. Commander Mackenzie and I will evaluate Dr. Engtamn- Jensi first." Brian said. "Ok now that is out of the way, would you like to tell me a little about yourself?" Marta asked. Brian felt funny to have someone ask about him. ~This must be why people hate counsellors....~ Brian thought. "Well....I come from the famous Rogers family. They're all command officers and I'm the first non-Bridge Officer in over 200 years." Brian said. "So why don't you tell me about yourself?" Brian articulated has he turned the tables. (Posted by Kevin Schram) (Starbase Geneva-Medical Center-CMO - Admiral Gr'iann -0825) Gr'iann had been in medical since before the beginning of shift change. Since he couldn't sleep he figured he could watch the nurse go through their routines. Unfortunately he wasn't able to concentrate on his observations. He kept finding his mind wandering to the last night's events. He couldn't believe how idiotic he behaved. Like a love struck cub. It was as if he'd never spent time with a beautiful woman. Although, it is strange that he be attracted to a human female. He spent a great deal of the night trying to explain his behavior to himself. He just couldn't seem to get her out of his thoughts. Worse than that, the thoughts he was having were most... inappropriate. But he couldn't help himself. It was as if he were in love. The last time he'd felt this way... ~Oh no! It couldn't be.~ That was when he went to the database, and began to calculate the years, and the seasons. Funny how he thought of that term. If he didn't know any better, he'd be in the "Season." And to make it worse, he'd caught Mackenzie's scent. She must have been giving off some powerful pheromones last night. Perhaps it was her "season" as well. Whatever the reason, there was no way around it. His desire to "mate" with Kaitlyn was only going to get worse. He replicated a vial of hormone suppressant that might help him deal with this time of his life. But he knew that it was only a temporary measure. Sooner or later he was going to have to mate... with Mackenzie. That was when the medical emergency call came in. =^=Promenade to medical, we have an emergency here. It appears a child has fallen from level two to level one.=^= "On mmy way," Gr'iann tapped his comm badge. He went through the triage center and picked out two technicians to accompany him. As they went through the door he thought he could pick out Mackenzie's scent. "Get focused Gr'iann," he muttered to himself. When they arrived at the accident scene, it looked pretty bad. Gr'iann looked up to see the spot that the human boy had fallen from. It was a good ten meters. How could such a thing happen? Human children were so unpredictable. Well, that was true about all children, Gr'iann supposed. The boy was lucky to be as undamaged as he was. A compound fracture of his left leg, some major contusions and abrasions, but that was about it. No internal injuries, and no concussion, although he was unconscious. His mother worried over the Caitian as he went through the motions of checking the boy out. It seemed that the boy was showing off for his friends, walking on the railing of the upper level. He must have lost his footing. Gr'iann shook his head and growled lowly. ~Children.~ "He assured the mother that the boy would be fine but had to take him back to the medical center for treatment. He wanted to do it while the boy was still unconscious. It would just be easier. "Gr'iann to medical, transport of team and one patient." He looked at the mother, "By the time you get there he'll be much better." Then he turned to the security man that had called. "If you could get custodial services here to clean up the mess?" They then disappeared in the transporter effect. When they arrived, Kaitlyn had already for the meeting with the senior officers. His heart sank a little, at not seeing her again. However, he was able to concentrate on his patient. True to his word, by the time the mother had showed up the boy was awake, fighting back tears. His leg had nearly been repaired and the nurses were working on the bruises and scrapes. When Gr'iann was done he pulled the mother aside. "His leg will be sore and weak forr about fourr days. Have himm take it easy, forr about a week, and please, have himm stay off the rrailings frromm now on." The mother thanked Gr'iann and then went in to hug and chastise her son. Gr'iann had to smile, once again wishing he'd had the opportunity to have cubs of his own. And thinking how glad he didn't. Suddenly he remembered the call to the observation room. He checked in with the charge nurse, leaving orders to call him if anything comes up and headed for the meeting. (Posted by Al Muir) (Starbase Geneva, CO's Ready Room, CO Lise Arianna, 0845) Shortly after it was clear that the planet would have no more communications with them, and they were still not yet sure as to what was going on, Lise went into her ready room and sat down at her desk. She swiveled her chair so that it faced the window and looked out on what had previously been an empty star field and was now a planet. It was enormous, and just -- there. That message had been so disturbing, and yet, so well... familiar? Had it been the universal translator that had put it into English? No, it hadn't she'd verified it. Those people on that planet were speaking English, but what they said made no sense. None at all. She replayed the conversation in her mind, and couldn't help but hearing the words "Surgeon General -- Their Houdini -- Their Indie's Temple!" Repeat in her mind over and over again. It was something serious. Maybe they were in danger? Maybe this was a warning! What if there were other planets that would be appearing soon, what if Geneva was in the way of one of the planets! The stress was mounting, the unknown, the sound of those voices. Something was urgent, something was wrong. OR maybe...Lise considered a moment, maybe that was how their species expressed greeting? She had to make herself remember that just because they spoke a variant of English, didn't mean that their cultural nuances were the same. Perhaps, even, what they had sent us had been a greeting? ~Then why would they say silence?~ Lise wondered, but again countered with; perhaps, that was the way that they formally greeted someone. Perhaps, they were in the midst of a trial period to see if they were friendly or not. Perhaps, there was something cultural that they were designed to do in this lapse that would indicate their intentions. Or perhaps they were supposed to do nothing? There were so many uncertainties. So many things at play. Lise closed her mind and took two deep breaths. She cleared her senses and reached out to the planet across from her. Their emotions were shocking and in turmoil. But what kind of turmoil it was, she could not tell. Their thought patterns were unlike anything she'd sensed before. ~Of course, different speech, different thought~. Their emotions were, however intense. But perhaps that was due to the fact that they'd just appeared in their universe? There were so many questions unanswered, and Lise couldn't begin to make heads or tails of it. She began scanning the databanks to see if anything like that had ever happened before. History was the best teacher, but if this was some sort of cyclic event, chances were that no one was even out here to witness this planet's arrival or disappearance the last time it happened. Geneva, had, after all, just been established within the past couple of years. Lise traced her cranial ridges and closed her eyes. The staff meeting awaited. (Posted by Katherine Mazurok) (Starbase Geneva- Little Cardassia- Lord Gled Forsche - 0848) Gled had started on the lower levels of the promenade and before working his way up noticed a shadow fall across his path, several people began shouting and pointing and one woman screamed and began running for a shop front. Gled saw one man fall on his face and grovel and several more dressed in strange (for an Orion who wears furs and leather it would have to be outlandish) robes with beads and whatnot were excitedly shouting. Gled's men had fanned out through the station to do his bidding leaving him alone for now as he was well able to handle himself and they were just moments away in the event he signaled them. Gled had engendered a lot of attention since beaming aboard and wondered now what was happening so he looked out the view port and was astonished, sensors had not shown a planet near Geneva! ~What is this? I come on board and my arrival is upstaged by a planet? One that appears out of nowhere? How can this be?~ He walked to the nearest shopkeeper who had poked his head out to look and said heatedly. "What is this? Do planets appear here often?" (Posted by Charles) (Starbase Geneva- Little Cardassia- Hatri Ronsworth - 0850) Hatri was heading back to his store after realizing that he had left several important- time sensitive documents. He wasn't sure if there would be under a complete lock down. To his surprise, when he got there the security was relatively non-existent. He walked up to his store and opened one of the big gold and glass doors. He was walking towards the office when a man walked through the door. "What is this? Do planets appear here often?" said the man Hatri recognized as Lord Gled Forsche. Then the station shuttered as it self corrected for the new stellar body. "Well as new as I am here, I would venture a guess and say no. Otherwise the station would not be going to general quarters. Would you care for a drink?" Hatri forgot the paper work and went behind the bar. If security really cared they could tell them to leave, else Hatri was going to enjoy himself. (Posted By Bobby) (Starbase Geneva- Little Cardassia-Lord Gled Forsche- 0851) “Well as new as I am here, I would venture a guess and say no. Otherwise the station would not be going to general quarters. Would you care for a drink?” Gled followed the burly Cardassian into the bar as he was speaking. "General quarters eh? It was hard to hear with that 'Holy man' yelling in my ear about the New Eden reappearing and how I needed to divest myself of my treasures and follow holiness." He wrinkled his nose in distaste. " Why is it too many true believers in the divine way equate the lack of bathing with holiness?" The 7'2" tall and 280 pound green skinned Orion named Gled Forsche leaned over the bar and looked at the bottles with a smile. "A drink? Of course I'd like a drink! A man of importance needs alcohol to oil his way." (Reply: Hatri) Gled spotted a particular bottle and said. "Ah, I see you have Saurian brandy, give me a large glass." (Reply: Hatri) Gled sniffed the beverage and then turned up the glass and downed half the contents in several gulps then returned the glass to the bar with a chuckle followed by a belch. "That burns on the way down it does and stokes a fine fire. Now if only I had my concubine to put it out!" He looked around the inside of the bar. "You said you were new here. How long have you been on the station?" (Posted by Charles) (Starbase Geneva- Little Cardassia- Hatri Ronsworth- 0852) "A drink? Of course I'd like a drink! A man of importance needs alcohol to oil his way." Gled said very proudly. "Very well said, take your pick of the bar. Myself, I will have a nice glass of kanar," Gled spotted a particular bottle and said. "Ah, I see you have Saurian brandy, give me a large glass." Hatri took out two glasses and the bottles from the private stash behind the bar. He poured them both a drink. "That burns on the way down it does and stokes a fine fire. Now if only I had my concubine to put it out!" He looked around the inside of the bar. "You said you were new here. How long have you been on the station?" "About two months getting everything set up and we just recently. What were you saying about some religious nut? Was he an older human, bald headed and about this tall." Hatri made a gesture with his hand a little under two meters from the floor. Then he took a long slow gulp of the kanar. Then the delicious drink oozed down his throat as he felt its effects sliding into his brain. "What exactly is it that you do?" (Posted by Bobby Pirie) (Starbase Geneva- Little Cardassia- Lord Gled Forsche- 0854) In reply to Gled’s question of the length of his occupancy the Cardassian replied. "About two months getting everything set up and we just recently opened. What were you saying about some religious nut? Was he an older human, bald headed and about this tall." Hatri made a gesture with his hand a little under two meters from the floor. Then he took a long slow gulp of his drink. Gled bared his teeth in a smile. "One and the same. He called himself The one who warns or some such." Gled took another gulp of the brandy as he felt the buzz beginning, giving him a feeling of warmth and a slight lightheadedness. "I only just resisted the urge to throttle him with one hand while slicing him up with the other." He fingered the jeweled knife buckled in a sheath at his waist. "He finally got the idea he was not wanted and left rather quickly." He remembered the look of terror upon the man face as Gled had described what he would do to him if he didn't shut up and move on. "What exactly is it that you do?" Hatri asked with a slight frown. "I am of the Council of Lesser Lords in the Ky'Horo Syndicate of the Orions and I have come to Geneva to set up business here." Gled answered thoughtfully. "I expect to grow very rich from trade in this quadrant." (Reply: Hatri) "After the hoopla about a suddenly appearing planet dies down I am going to hold a bash for certain officials and select businessmen from the station, It would be my pleasure if you would attend." Gled downed the last of his drink as Hatri replied. (Reply: Hatri) "Splendid then!" Gled slapped the glass lightly on the bar. "I shall give you notice when the time is set. For now I have an office and storefront to procure, I shall see you again very soon I would wager since you seem to have a good stock of fine brandy." Gled said with a wink. "How much do I owe you for the drink?" (Posted by Charles) (Starbase Geneva- Observation Room- Admiral Gr'iann- 0908) Gr'iann entered the room in time to hear Casely talking to someone. "The truth of the matter is that most instances of war and violence are caused by misunderstandings. Remember the battles and wars with the Klingons simply caused by us not understanding their culture. We could have saved each other a lot of grief by trying to understand our differences and our similarities," intoned Paul, "I look forward to seeing what the science officers and engineers have to say about their physiology and their technology." "Verry well put, Lt," Gr'iann said. "You would make an excellent Caitian. We also believe that mmost conflicts can be avoided thrrough prroperr underrstanding. Now who is it we'rre hoping to underrstand betterr?" (posted by Al Muir) (Starbase Geneva, Observation lounge, 2O/TAC/SC Lieutenant {JG} Paul Casely, 0911) Paul had just finished explaining his take on the job of tactical, especially when dealing with new races to his ATAC when Admiral Gr'iann's voice cut through the room. "Verry well put, Lt," Gr'iann said. "You would make an excellent Caitian. We also believe that mmost conflicts can be avoided thrrough prroperr underrstanding. Now who is it we'rre hoping to underrstand betterr?" ~When did he come in? I'm going to have to be a lot more observant in the future.~ "Well Sir, we seem to have had a planet... ummm... appear... next to us. If you'd care to have a seat I can play the tapes of the conversation, if you can call it that, between Captain Arianna and the new race we've encountered... or races." With that, Paul started the log rolling for the Admiral's benefit. He watched the pair, one so obviously alien, the other more familiar and listened to their odd language. (reply Gri'ann, Klars, any) "Actually doctor, do you think it would be possible for you to do racial profiles on those individuals? My gut instinct is that they are different races... one even looks human... but you'd know better," stated Paul. This felt like a case now, a chance at some investigative work, an area Paul loved. He might even get to couple this with some diplomacy, if they could ever crack the language. (Reply Gri'ann, Klars, any) Suddenly, a very disheveled looking Doctor Engtamn-Jensi walked into the room. His eyes were bloodshot and he looked... green. Engtamn looked at the trio, nodded in their direction and sat down. He then put his head down on the table and moaned softly. (Reply Gri'ann, Klars, any) (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva, Observation Lounge, CO Lise Arianna, 0915) Lise entered the Observation Lounge aware of the fact that there were already a number of officers assembled, she walked quickly over to the replicator and replicated herself a cup of black coffee. At a time like this her stomach could handle nothing else. She sat in her customary chair and caught a glimpse of the planet that seemed to taunt her. The orb floating outside the window, so close and yet so far. There were so many questions the mystery was astounding. Lise looked around the room to see, Lt. Casely conversing with Ensign Klars and Admiral Gr'iann. That was it, and already... she checked her chronometer, it was 09.16! She sat back and waited. As if on cue, a rather sick looking Doctor Engatmn-Jensi walked into the ready room. He did not look at all his best. ~Must be recovering from the party last night.~ Lise drummed her fingernails on the table absent-mindedly as she waited for the rest of the crew to arrive. There noise of their fellow dissidents flooded into their cavern from adjacent ones. It was here, that the wreak of the USS Beagle and many of the artifacts that had been subsequently dissipated through the social network resided. It had taken painstaking efforts to try and recover them, it was the only tie they had back to their culture. Their rightful culture. Maintaining a link with the past had been difficult, it surely had. Things had taken such a turn for the worse since the onset of the Riclian occupation. Well not quite occupation, as it was they who had been on Ricilia and not like they'd tried to take over or anything -- or... It didn't matter, the time was now. The only way they could succeed with this would be if they could manage to attract someone from the station's attention. However, they couldn't be too obvious, or else the Ricilian government would be able to pinpoint their exact location. This message, this symbol, needed to look like something, like something that was just random static, but it had to contain something that the humans on the station would understand. It had taken them years to research this idea, and years to come up with the perfect code. It had been inputted into an emitter that had been modified to pulse the message at precise intervals, and yet, it was of such a nature that it would merely look like surrounding interference. And the type that the scientists would just screen out as natural to this environment as they did with many signals every time there was a jump. Galicene and Trevnor reached towards the button together. They would enter into this together. The time was coming, the caverns all around them went silent as if anticipating what was about to occur. Both their fingers touched the button at the exact same instant. A humming was heard as the machine activated and then it began to send its message. Dot Dot Dot Dot Dash Dash Dash Dash Dot Dot Dot Dot and it repeated...... (Posted by Katherine Mazurok) (Starbase Geneva-Conference Room-ACMO Lt. Cmdr. Kaitlyn Mackenzie-0917) Kaitlyn had now been sitting in the conference room for fifteen minutes. She wondered when the captain would be there....she usually wasn't late for meetings when she called for them. Obviously this was a time that something strange was going on, as she saw the captain's distressed look when she entered the room. But before the captain had entered, other crew members arrived. Rogers and Gr'iann were sitting close to her and she wondered if she could make it through this meeting with the weird feeling she had in her stomach. ~Of coarse I can...after all, I'm a professional.~ Since the captain had been there, she slowly disregarded everything else around her and was ready to pay attention when the captain began to speak. (Posted by: Stacey) (Starbase Geneva - Observation Lounge - Counselor Ensign Kassia Marta - 0920) Kass walked through the door to the Observation lounge and noticed that the captain had already arrived. She did not seemed to be in a very good mood as Kass figured that not all had arrived on time including her. She had been visiting one of the crew that had a personal matter that needed to be discussed and she could not just leave. "I am sorry Captain, a unscheduled counseling session prevented me from arriving on time." Kass said as she sat down in the counselor's chair near the command personnel. Kass always hated to be late at any meetings that she was to attend, but, her job was to counsel the crew and that had been what she was doing. Kass looked around to see Rogers sitting very close to Mackenzie and wondered what hold she had on him. Then she noticed that the admiral was also close to her and thought that was weird. She noticed that Mackenzie was a bit unnerved by their nearness to her, but, she had the look that she would get through the meeting anyways. Kass made a mental note that she would have to have a talk with Rogers about this seemingly obsession of his on Mackenzie. (posted by Frank (Starbase Geneva, Observation Lounge, Ensign (JG) Brian Rogers, 0923) Brian ran in and realized he was extremely late. He noticed most of the others were here. He felt out of place being so late and walked over to Kaitlyn. "Hey Kaitlyn. Sorry I didn't come back yesterday. I had an....accident." Brian said, has he skimmed the room and saw everybody who was there. (Posted by Kevin Schram) (Starbase Geneva, Headquarters, Humans for Humanity Station Leader, Dean Benford, 0924) Dean watched as the information that he had on the planet that had appeared scrolled past. Nothing seemed more remarkable than the fact that the planet was there in the first place, hanging in space where nothing had been before. He glanced out his window at it again. It seemed so strange to see that part of space suddenly occupied. He looked back to his screen. Status reports from his insertion group had just started coming in. They had begun training in one of the holosuites for hire from the local merchants. As far as station logs were concerned, a holonovel was running about the moon colony of Earth. Meanwhile, inside the group were practicing battle maneuvers and readying themselves in silent running insertion techniques. They were one of his best teams, it wouldn't be a problem. The PROBLEM would be disengaging a shuttle when the station was in general quarters. He might have to lean on his personnel who had infiltrated Starfleet... even risk one of them... for that task. Dean's calm was broken a moment later. =^=Sir, we've intercepted a transmission from the planet, we thought you should hear. We're working on deciphering it.=^= "Send it through," said Dean anxiously. It was about time they were starting to do the things they were good at. =^=Dot Dot Dot Dot Dash Dash Dash Dash Dot Dot Dot Dot=^= At the end, the signal repeated itself. ~Strange, but somehow familiar.~ thought Dean to himself. "I want you to double your efforts on this. I want to know what they're trying to tell us. NOW," Dean stated emphatically. =^=Yes Sir.=^= With that, the transmission cut. Dean knew at this point that the race was on... but did the Starfleet officers who he was so obviously racing against. (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva-Conference Room-ACMO Lt. Cmdr. Kaitlyn Mackenzie-0925) Rogers was late for the meeting, as Kaitlyn watched him feeling squeamish as he walked through the room. "Hey Kaitlyn. Sorry I didn't come back yesterday. I had an....accident." Looking up at Brian from her chair, she said, "I know...we can talk afterwards." She didn't want to keep people waiting after the captain had been unwittingly a little late herself. ~My chance to see what that message was about.~ The message still had her preoccupied with what was going on. Deciding to ignore it for the time being, she turned her attention to the captain and awaited the meeting to start. (Posted by: Stacey) (Starbase Geneva, Observation Lounge, Ensign Iss'rad Ghakin, 0926) Iss'rad left Little Cardassia and stopped briefly in her quarters before heading for the Observation Lounge. She had a feeling the day just got a LOT more interesting as she stepped into the lounge and found a seat. (Posted by KJ) (Starbase Geneva, Observation Lounge, CO Arianna, 0927) Lise sat waiting and the rest of the crew started to file in. She saw Doctor Mackenzie in the corner, and then Counsellor Marta came in, she paused a moment to say: "I am sorry Captain, an unscheduled counselling session prevented me from arriving on time." Lise nodded as the Counsellor took her place. Clearly punctuality in a crisis was not the crew's strong point! Counsellor Rogers drifted in and sat by Doctor Mackenzie. The whole seating arrangement was quite odd. Well not so much so, Lise reasoned, the officers from medical were grouped together. But there was a strange feeling happening there... something strange indeed. But now was not the time for such wonderings, now was the time for action. ~I don't care who else isn't here, I'm going to start this meeting now!~ She thought to herself. Just as she was standing up, Ensign Ghakin rushed in and took her seat. "Ladies and Gentlemen." Lise began the meeting and waited until the murmurs between people died down amongst one another. "Good morning. I thank you from prying yourselves away from your busy schedules to attend this meeting." She said carefully controlling her voice. "I would like to mention, however, in the future, when the meeting is called for 8:55, I would like to be able to begin at 9 am." She paused another moment. "However, I'm sure that you were all so busily involved in your departments finding things to report at this meeting, so let's listen to what you've all dug up." Lise hit a few buttons on the data PADD by her seat and the view screen at the head of the room illuminated. "This morning at precisely 08.35 hours, while we were in the midst of our morning routines, a planet, appeared at this location." Lise pointed her finger to the map, showing the exact location between the planet and Geneva. The planet, was just outside of transporter range, and entirely too close for comfort. "There is no records showing that there was any sort of planet in this area, and so, we are at a loss. When we tried to contact this planet, this was the response." Lise hit another button and replayed the message that had about an hour earlier boomed throughout the comm system on the main operations deck. =^=People as Taylor. No Safety with airbags. 911 we did. 911! That doth we risketh! To von trapp them we did. Von trapp them! And now!? Their dividends doth not re-runs! DOTH NOT RE-RUNS! Surgeon General - their Houdini - their Indie's temple! SURGEON GENERAL - Their HOUDINI - THEIR INDIE's TEMPLE! =^= "Ok... And so, about the linguistics, it has been established that this is actually how they spoke, the universal translator has not altered it in any shape and/or form for those of us who are accustomed to receiving things in Federation Standard. This poses the question, how is it possible that this planet, that has appeared seemingly out of nowhere would have such a proficient command of what seems to be the English language, and then secondly, how has it evolved that we are no longer able to understand it. We need a way to communicate with these people and fast. At this point, I'm going to open the floor up for what you have found out about our newest neighbour as well as any comments and/or questions." (Posted by Katherine Mazurok) (Starbase Geneva, Observation Lounge, 2O/TAC/SC Lieutenant {JG} Paul Casely, 0928) Paul listened to the Captain set up the events of the morning. He was suddenly VERY happy that he had arrived early for the meeting, as he left the Operations Center as soon as the command was given. He considered the information for a second. "Captain, I believe we need more information on the planet and on the people. I'd like permission to take the Nautilus out and at least closer to the planet. The Nautilus is a better choice than the Mithrandir as it isn't heavily armed and has a lot of scientific equipment, in a scan it will at least confirm that we're on a scientific information gathering mission. I'll, of course, need scientists and medical staff... at least one counsellor would be good too. As we seem to have a plethora of these individuals on the station, we shouldn't have a problem," said Paul slowly. Paul had been looking forward to trying out one of the station's regular bevy of ships. He was mildly disappointed that it may be the Nautilus rather than the Mithrandir, but in the end, the Nautilus did make more sense in this situation. The last thing he wanted this first contact to be is botched because he needed to bring out the shiny toy with all the big boom machines. (Reply Arianna, any) Paul nodded, "I also want to caution against automatically assuming that they're hostile. I know that as Tactical Chief its my job to keep the station ready for possibly attack and I'm not advocating shirking those duties in the least, I want us to be ready just in case, however I don't think it will help our case for first contact with them if we suddenly power up all our weapons. I would like our engineers to run diagnostics on weapons systems to make sure that they're functioning properly though. With the station's recent growing pains we may need them at some point in a pinch." This was true. He wanted to keep the weapons offline for now, a universal gesture of friendship, but at the same time forewarned is forearmed. "I believe it is just as possible by their tone that the pair of individuals were warning us about a danger to us or asking help from us as it is that they were threatening us," Paul finished. (Reply Arianna, any) "Finally, Sir... we need someone to work on cracking that 'language' such as it is. If we've ascertained its an Earth language, my ATAC recognized some words from ancient history he's studied. Perhaps research is the key into this one?" said Paul. It was important that he mention Klars' ideas. Give credit where credit is due after all. Hopefully, Klars would be able to expand on the idea he had mused about the language. (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva, Observation Lounge, ATAC Ensign Dorrin Klars, (0929) "Finally, Sir... we need someone to work on cracking that 'language' such as it is. If we've ascertained its an Earth language, my ATAC recognized some words from ancient history he's studied. Perhaps research is the key into this one?" Dorrin continued from where Casley left off. He made a mental note to remember that he worked for a man who believed in giving credit where credit was due, unless he didn't mean to, but Dorrin would act as if he did. "Well , from what I have researched prior to coming here the terms Surgeon General, Houdinim and Indie's temple are all pre-warp. Extremely so, which reveals two things. First they had to have had contact with earth pre-warp, second because the language is so erratic, they haven't come back for a long time. Which raises questions, why isn't there visit documented? Why come back now? I am afraid that these questions can only be answered by them with contact. Which means we are going to have to send down someone. Considering I studied ancient history, and that I have an idea of how to break the ice by doing something I don't think anyone else would volunteer for, I volunteer." (posted by Dan Black) (Starbase Geneva, Observation Lounge, COUNS Ensign (JG) Brian Rogers, 0931) Brian waited for the ATAC to finish speaking. "Considering I studied ancient history, and that I have an idea of how to break the ice by doing something I don't think anyone else would volunteer for, I volunteer." Klars said. Then Brian spoke up. "I volunteer too, sir. There planet just reappeared. They might be dazed and confused, and if we show up and start asking questions, they may become hostile. If myself or Ensign Marta were to go along, we could monitor the beings and if they become unstable, maybe we could warn the mission leader." Brian said, but then realized it might be taken has an insult. "Not that Ensign Klars or anyone else couldn't pick up the hints, but a counsellor might pick it up sooner." Brian explained. (Posted by Kevin Schram) (Starbase Geneva, Observation Lounge, 2O/TAC/SC Lieutenant (JG) Paul Casely, 0935) Paul nodded for a second and looked at both Rogers and Klars. "Gentlemen, your ideas are excellent and I appreciate them, as I'm sure the Captain does, but please don't let your excitement get the best of you yet. Taking the science vessel to gather more data and visiting is just one possibility. In the end, the Captain reserves judgement. Perhaps we need other ideas and plans besides my initial one as well. Lets try to give the Captain a variety of options so she can choose or combine from many ideas," said Paul with a smile. (Reply Arianna, Klars, Rogers, any) "Perhaps the possibility exists, if we crack their language, to invite them here rather than us going immediately there. In that way, there would be no concern on their part that we are hostile towards them. We do have a language barrier to deal with after all," said Paul. It was important in his role as acting First Officer to try and extract as many ideas as possible and all the Captain the luxury of choice. He also had to keep things somewhat on track. It was wonderful to see such enthusiastic officers and Paul was sure more ideas would spring from them. (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva, Observation Lounge, COUNS Ensign (JG) Rogers, 0938) Brian started talking. "But, Lt. Casely, if they come here, wouldn't it be a bigger security risk. I mean sending an away team to their planet would be a big risk, too, but from a viewpoint, an away team of lets say, um, 8 people is a smaller loss than the entire station. Not to sound morbid...." Rogers explained. "And if they threaten us while we have one of the ships in orbit we can do an emergency beam out, but if they are here and start attacking, we can't beam out to anywhere." Brian hoped the others would see his point of view. (Posted by Kevin Schram) (Starbase Geneva, Observation Lounge, 2O/TAC/SC Lieutenant (JG) Paul Casely, 0943) Paul listened to the counsellor's point of view. It suddenly became very clear why he had his job, and Paul had his. No harm, no foul, but it was a rather one-dimensional way of looking at the problem. "Quite frankly, from a tactical point of view, its much easier to shepherd a small delegation from off station while they visited us on a small, enclosed station then it is to look out for the safety of a small group on an entire planet. We're safer with them on the station and it is a gesture of goodwill. In addition, its safer for the people visiting us as we are enclosed, and we have an automatic tracking system on the station," stated Paul straightforwardly, "However, I have to explore all options. That is my job as acting First Officer, which is why both ideas have been brought up." (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva, Observation Lounge, CSO Ensign (SG) Doctor Engtamn-Jensi, 0946) The doctor listened to the discussion between the counsellor and the station's second officer. Quite frankly, he didn't care one way or another. He had many other things to deal with. He finally raised his head and blinked his bloodshot eyes. "I would say," said Engtamn softly, "that their warp technology is somewhat lower than ours. They appear to be approximately two decades behind us according to scans, however I would need to actually see one of their reactors to know for sure. While they could be a serious threat, I do not think they could easily penetrate our shield defenses unless they have a beam weapon technology we are not aware of." (Reply any) Engtamn looked away and stated softly, "I would have to confer with my colleague before making such claims. We need more information including advanced sensor scans, may I suggest a probe?" Engtamn looked towards Ensign Ghakin, "What is your area of expertise good woman?" (Reply Ghakin) "Is there any insights or information you can offer miss?" asked Engtamn politely of Iss'rad. (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva-Conference Room-ACMO Lt. Cmdr. Kaitlyn Mackenzie-0947) Since the meeting had started, Kaitlyn has listened intently on what was going on around the station. As the captain explained their current situation, Kaitlyn was just as puzzled as the rest of the crew on what to expect, especially when Arianna played out the message. When all was over with, the captain threw it out to the crew on ideas they might have as well as what they were to expect being in a situation like so. She started thinking about the message and what it could possible have meant. But just as she was doing so, the commander and Counselor Rogers kicked off the meeting with a debate. She listened as Rogers was volunteering for the mission, and as he tried to persuade the command team to agree with his decision to go along with an away team. That is my job as acting First Officer, which is why both ideas have been brought up." Looking back and forth between the two who seemed to be carrying on the discussion, Kaitlyn waited for the right moment to speak up. However, in waiting, there really didn't seem to be a right time, so she just chose the moment she was currently in. "Captain, if we do go along with the commander's idea and take the Nautilus, I'd like to volunteer for the away mission. Seeing as how a science crew will be needed, I think I might benefit the most in this area." <> She hadn't been on an away mission in awhile, and frankly she was getting antsy. But this seemed to be the perfect timing for her because they needed the science officers and it gave her the opportunity to get back into the field since her transfer aboard Geneva. Sitting back, she awaited the captain's response before adding more to her idea. (Posted by: Stacey) (Starbase Geneva-Conference Room-2O/TAC/SC Lieutenant {JG} Paul Casely - 0948) Paul listened to Mackenzie and nodded, he looked over to the Captain, who seemed to be quietly taking in everything before making a decision. ~Wise woman, wants to hear it all before she makes a decision,~ thought Paul. "Doctor Mackenzie, if we do end up using that idea, I agree that we will need medical and science staff for it. This will hopefully be a true scientific mission and really nothing else. I still am concerned about how they would view us suddenly orbiting their planet though right after contact," said Paul. (Reply Arianna, Mackenzie, any) "What I do believe would be useful is for the medical staff to try and do something with the display tape. I know you can only get so much from bone structure and the like, that you really need samples and direct scans, but still... any information about either species that can be gleaned from your expert knowledge of biology will at least give us an idea of what we're dealing with," stated Paul nodding at the medical staff assembled. (Reply any medical staff) "De'Charin, McLaren, Ghakin, do you have any further insight on the technological state of the civilization on that planet? Have you had time to analyse any of the scans? We have Doctor Engtamn-Jensi's preliminary report, but can you add anything?" asked Paul looking at the two engineers and new science officer. (Reply De'Charin, McLaren, Ghakin) "Marta, Rogers, how are you two with languages? You're our experts on behaviour as it were. Can you get an idea as to whether it was a warning, a plea for help, a concern for our safety or something else? Is there any way that you can coordinate with Ensign Klars, who first noticed the induction of old Earth words and phrases, to try and crack that language?" queried Paul. (Reply Marta, Rogers, Klars) "I guess Captain, what I'm saying is that before we have more assembled concrete information it might be unwise for us to pursue any direct course of action. However, the longer we wait to make a decision the more at risk we could be placing ourselves as well. Finally, quite frankly, I'm really curious about that planet. I'm sure everyone else here feels the same drive I do to explore and find out what is going on," stated Paul. (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva - Main Ops - OPS- Ensign {JG} Zadora Yalrath- 0949) Zadora had been trying to figure out what it was since it started. It had been scanned, run through the station computer, worked over again and again and she came to the same conclusion again and again. It had to be another communication from the planet surface, but... code? Perhaps. Why would anyone use code though? They were surely advanced enough to use other methods. Zadora knew that the senior staff meeting was taking place at this moment, she also knew this information might be important to them. She transferred her scans to the PADD and headed straight for the meeting. Zadora thought for a moment and then decided that she should probably tell the captain about the 'other' news. ~When it rains it pours,~ she thought. (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva-Conference Room-ACMO Lt. Cmdr. Kaitlyn Mackenzie-0950) After having volunteered for the away mission, if there was to be one, Kaitlyn sat back and listened to what Lt. Casely had to say. "Doctor Mackenzie, if we do end up using that idea, I agree that we will need medical and science staff for it. This will hopefully be a true scientific mission and really nothing else. I still am concerned about how they would view us suddenly orbiting their planet though right after contact," said Paul. Nodding in understanding, he went on. "What I do believe would be useful is for the medical staff to try and do something with the display tape. I know you can only get so much from bone structure and the like, that you really need samples and direct scans, but still... any information about either species that can be gleaned from your expert knowledge of biology will at least give us an idea of what we're dealing with," stated Paul nodding at the medical staff assembled. "I'll get right on it sir," she said as she tapped a few buttons on her PADD. She was trying to collect as much information as anyone knew that would help her in identifying these people. Just looking with the naked eye at a bone structure was going to be tough, but she thought she might be able to do it. As the meeting moved onto other departments, Kaitlyn listened on their ideas as well. (Posted by: Stacey) (Starbase Geneva-Conference Room-ATAC: Ensign Dorrin Klars - 0951) "Marta, Rogers, how are you two with languages? You're our experts on behaviour as it were. Can you get an idea as to whether it was a warning, a plea for help, a concern for our safety or something else? Is there any way that you can coordinate with Ensign Klars, who first noticed the induction of old Earth words and phrases, to try and crack that language?" Dorrin began to nod. What the Lt. said did make sense and cracking the language would help them. Then something very troubling occurred to him. "Lt. what about the possibility it isn't their language? What if somehow they got in touch with something or someone who spoke English ages past, recognized us to be users of that language and rambled out a few remembered phrases. Could it be that instead of them having a disoriented English language, they are just saying the little they know in an effort to communicate? What if it isn't their language at all, just a translation of what those phrases would sound like in their language? (Posted by Dan Black) (Starbase Geneva-Conference Room-2O/SC/TAC, Lieutenant {JG} Paul Casely - 0952) Paul listened to Ensign Klars' concern and nodded. The Ensign did have a point, however it was one that would be nearly impossible to follow up on. It was more important to deal with tangible possibilities and leave the dead ends until they'd exhausted attempts to expand on the possible. "That, Ensign, is a distinct possibility. I suppose you've just added to your workload that," Paul said with a grin and a wink, "However, I still believe they were attaching some meaning to them. More than just a few random things would have received." (Reply Klars) Paul nodded again, "I agree, the possibility does exist, but we must explore several different possibilities. That means almost making the attempt on the language, if it is one." (Posted by Jeff Bergeron (Starbase Geneva, Observation Lounge, CSO Ensign (SG) Doctor Engtamn-Jensi and 2O/TAC/SC Lieutenant {JG} Paul Casely, 0954) Engtamn listened to the work being assigned to the various members of the crew and he suddenly had an idea... scanners... probes... why hadn't he thought of it before? "Ummm... Sir?" said Engtamn softly. Paul looked over to the still hung over Chief Science Officer. "Yes Doctor Engtamn-Jensi? Do you have something to add?" he asked. Engtamn nodded for a minute. "You probably can get a lot of preliminary information with your currently planning, and it does sound like a good start, but I believe we can get more information without endangering anyone... at least not yet," stated Engtamn meekly. Paul mulled this over for a moment. This sounded interesting and promising, but then again Engtamn had a habit of losing inventions. "Continue Doctor, we're listening," said Paul with obvious interest. "Well Sir," started Engtamn slowly, "Perhaps microprobes are the answer. It is possible to create probes that are roughly the size of a fingernail. They have to be very specific in what they do, as obviously their data retrieval system is not able to record a great deal of data. With the help of the medical staff we could reprogramme a microprobe to pick up biological data and send it back here. From that we might be able to get some scans. It won't replace the work a doctor could do on a real patient or subject, but it might give us a better idea of who or what we're dealing with. Is this possible?" "A good question Doctor," said Paul turning to the medical staff, "Is it possible to help Doctor Engtamn-Jensi to modify those microprobes?" (Reply Gri'ann, MacKenzie, any other medical staff present) "Perhaps sir, it is possible to send another set of microprobes down to collect language or sound data. I would also suggest we monitor the planet for open transmissions of any sort as it will provide more sample data for the counsellors and your ATAC?" said Engtamn, obviously growing more bold and more confident. Paul looked at Marta, Klars and Rogers and waited for their answer. (Reply Marta, Klars and Rogers) "So," began Paul, "if I'm understanding this correctly, the first order of business in information gathering will be to modify and send out those microprobes, glean information and then set about your various tasks with the medical staff trying to determine and analyse species and the counsellors and Klars working on language." Engtamn looked down slightly and then spoke again, "And for me to work on their technology level using the microprobes that I fashion to analyse technology and energy flow, but I'll need the help of some engineers." (Reply De'Charin, McLaren) Paul considered things for a second and glanced at the captain, who seemed to even have a slight grin on her face as she took this all in. He knew that she was assessing the entire senior staff at the moment in addition to their plans. This was their first test in working together. "Does anyone have any questions or concerns about the doctor's idea? If there is anything that could be a problem its very important that you speak up as everyone's input matters," said Paul finally and he waited. (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva - Conference Room - OPS- Ensign {JG} Zadora Yalrath- 1002) Zadora pressed the chime and waited. Presently the door slid opened and she saw the expectant faces of the senior staff around the table. She strode in and handed the PADD to the captain. "Sir, we're getting signals from the planet. They're weak, but there is a distinct pattern. We've been working on it for sometime now, but cannot seem to figure it out. Here are the scans and full reports from the people who worked on it," she stated formally. (Reply Arianna) Zadora nodded, and then swallowed. "I hate to be the bearer of potentially bad news, but we received a communication from somewhere else as well. It seems there are two members from the Cardassian Detapa Council on their way here. I tried to tell them that it wasn't a good time, but they were most insistent. Apparently they are trying to decide on which "Starfleet" to support. They'll be here within a week," she said, looking more than a bit nervous about the response the captain would give. (Reply Arianna) With that, Zadora excused herself and went back to operations.
