Historical Periods

The history of Star Trek: Freedom can be divided into several distinct periods, each marked by significant events and changes in the Federation and Starfleet. This page provides an overview of these historical periods.

Pre-Civil War Era (2405-2406)

The 52nd Fleet was officially launched in 2405 under the command of Admiral Robert LoDona. During this period:

• The fleet was assigned to Starbase Geneva
• Initial fleet composition included Station Geneva, USS Nimitz, USS Wraith, USS Freedom, USS Boudicca, and the Cochrane Research Facility
• The fleet began operations in Sector 221-G
• An unstable wormhole brought the USS Paladin from an alternate universe
• Admiral LoDona discovered a secret plot within the Starfleet Admiralty
• Tensions began to rise as Admiral Doenitz took control of the Federation Presidency

This period set the stage for the Federation Civil War, as Admiral LoDona prepared to resist Admiral Doenitz's attempts to remake the Federation.

Federation Civil War (2406-2408)

The Federation Civil War was a conflict between forces loyal to Admiral LoDona and forces loyal to Admiral Doenitz. Key characteristics of this period:

• Admiral LoDona declared open hostilities against certain Admirals in Starfleet
• The 52nd Fleet relocated to the Beta Quadrant via the Subspace River
• The Klingon Empire joined Admiral LoDona's cause
• Battles were fought throughout the Federation on core worlds
• Andoria was razed in defiance of Admiral Doenitz
• The Battle for the Mars Defence Perimeter resulted in victory for the 52nd Fleet
• Admiral Doenitz was defeated, arrested, and imprisoned
• President Rondar Nell was reinstated

This period marked one of the darkest times in Federation history, with Federation fighting Federation and significant loss of life.

Post-Civil War Contraction (2408-2431)

After the civil war ended, the Federation entered a period of contraction and defensive posture:

• Starfleet adopted a defensive posture rather than returning to exploration
• New policies directed the Federation to cease expansion and exploration
• Many worlds on the border of Federation space became exposed to attacks
• An increasing number of member worlds began to leave the Federation
• Andoria departed the Federation in 2418, taking their technology with them
• Cardassia joined the Federation in 2419, one of the few new members
• The 52nd Fleet was disbanded in 2431
• Starfleet focused on diplomatic missions rather than fleet operations

This period saw the Federation lose approximately a quarter of its member worlds and abandon its core mission of exploration.

The Incident (2443)

On April 23rd, 2443, Earth was attacked in what became known as "The Incident":

• An antimatter bomb was detonated in tunnels beneath Federation Headquarters in San Francisco
• The explosion created a blue antimatter wave that expanded outward
• Millions were vaporized while physical structures remained relatively intact
• By this time, the Federation had lost a quarter of its member worlds
• The attack became a symbol of what Starfleet had become and what was at stake

The Incident served as a wake-up call, leading to the election of President Stiave Atremi and the decision to rebuild Starfleet.

Rebuilding Era (2444-Present)

Following "The Incident," the Federation began a period of rebuilding:

• President Stiave Atremi was elected in 2444
• Admiral Remae Ktell was assigned to run the Mars Defence Perimeter
• The 52nd Fleet was reformed, beginning operations from Mars
• Admiral Ktell took command of the USS Republic
• Personnel began arriving on Mars to begin the rebuilding effort
• The fleet began working to restore Federation influence
• Exploration missions resumed
• Alliances were rebuilt with former member worlds

This period represents a return to the Federation's core values of exploration, cooperation, and protection of member worlds.
