Academy Curriculum

Starfleet Academy provides comprehensive training programs designed to prepare cadets for service in Starfleet. This page outlines the curriculum and training programs available at the Academy.

Department Training

Cadets receive specialized training based on their chosen department:

Command

Command training focuses on leadership, decision-making, and managing ship operations. Cadets learn about command protocols, crisis management, and leading teams effectively.

Operations

Operations training covers ship navigation, communications, and general operations. Cadets learn about ship systems, navigation protocols, and coordinating ship activities.

Engineering

Engineering training focuses on starship systems, maintenance, and repair. Cadets learn about warp drive, power systems, and keeping ships operational.

Science

Science training covers various scientific disciplines including physics, biology, astronomy, and xenobiology. Cadets learn about research methods, data analysis, and scientific exploration.

Medical

Medical training focuses on treating injuries and illnesses, both human and alien. Cadets learn about field medicine, medical equipment, and providing care in various situations.

Security/Tactical

Security and tactical training covers ship defense, away team security, and tactical operations. Cadets learn about weapons systems, security protocols, and protecting ship and crew.

Rank Progression

Players start at the rank of Ensign (junior grade) and can progress through the ranks based on their participation and contributions:

  • Ensign (Junior Grade): Entry-level rank for new players
  • Ensign: Standard entry rank
  • Lieutenant (Junior Grade): First promotion level
  • Lieutenant: Mid-level officer
  • Lieutenant Commander: Senior officer
  • Commander: Department head or First Officer
  • Captain: Ship Commanding Officer
  • Admiral: Fleet command and administrative positions

Graduation Requirements

To graduate from the Academy and be assigned to a fleet asset, cadets must:

  • Complete character creation and bio training
  • Understand game mechanics and posting requirements
  • Demonstrate understanding of the game's setting and history
  • Show commitment to collaborative storytelling
  • Complete department-specific training

Character Development

A key aspect of Academy training is character development. Cadets learn how to:

  • Create compelling characters with backgrounds and motivations
  • Write effective posts that advance storylines
  • Interact with other characters in character
  • Develop character arcs and growth over time
  • Balance character personality with Starfleet protocols

Game Mechanics Training

Cadets receive training in the mechanics of Play by Email gaming:

  • How to write and format posts
  • Posting requirements and frequency
  • How missions and storylines work
  • Interacting with Commanding Officers and First Officers
  • Understanding game continuity and canon

Practical Training

In addition to academic training, cadets participate in practical exercises:

  • Simulated missions and scenarios
  • Practice posts and character interactions
  • Department-specific exercises
  • Team collaboration exercises
